00:00¡Hola!
00:07These days I spend more and more time in my Wiltshire home
00:12and the pub I own
00:14thinking about all the big problems in the world
00:17and some smaller ones that annoy me
00:21Luckily there's a place I can go to solve them all
00:25or at least try
00:27My shed
00:29Right
00:31It's here that I have the tools
00:33Let's just saw some wood up
00:35the tea
00:37and a couple of other highly competent blokes
00:41Very good, brace yourself
00:43who've agreed to help me rid the world of problems
00:46Is she getting the ticket out?
00:47Great
00:48Dirty flight at us
00:49and small
00:51The cereal has gone soggy
00:53I'll also have to take on other people's problems
00:56What is wrong with Peter?
00:57He used to make a sound and now he doesn't
01:00By which I mean the locals at my pub
01:02who are always bringing me stuff to bend
01:05Is it a train set?
01:07So join us and our excitable crew
01:13Who will capture our endeavours
01:15That was epic
01:16As we create
01:17Make
01:19That feels like a terrible thing we've just done
01:21Repair
01:22So it's never worked
01:23Not in my lifetime
01:25And repurpose
01:26And repurpose
01:27In my shed load of ideas
01:32What do you think?
01:33This is just brilliant
01:35It's brilliant
01:46Here I am
01:47Apparently driving for pure pleasure
01:49Through the glorious Wiltshire countryside
01:51In my Mini
01:52In my Mini
01:56Actually
01:57And despite the vacant expression
02:00I'm thinking about one of those little problems
02:02That really bother me
02:04The weekly shop
02:10And what a senseless waste of life that is
02:13Because you drive to the supermarket
02:15You park your car
02:16You go and find a trolley
02:17You take your trolley round the supermarket
02:19You put all your shopping in it
02:20Then you go to the till
02:21And you unload the shopping again
02:22So you can pay for it
02:24And then it gets put into bags
02:25And then you put the bags back in the trolley
02:27Then you wheel the trolley back to the car park
02:29And you take the bags out of the trolley
02:30And you put them in your car
02:31And then
02:32Unless you're a blight on society
02:33You go and put the trolley away
02:34In the trolley parking place
02:35Then you drive home
02:37Then you unload the bags
02:38And then you put it all in your house
02:40I mean for a start
02:42It's unenvironmental
02:43Because we're told
02:44We're not supposed to use our cars
02:45For short local shopping journeys
02:47And you use all these bags
02:49And these are plastic
02:51And that is B.A.D.
02:54Despite bag charges
02:55And reusable bags for life
02:58We still use over 400 million
03:01Single-use plastic bags per year
03:03And make lots of shopping trips
03:05In our cars
03:07Something needs to be done
03:09And we have an idea
03:14What if we got rid of the need
03:16For bags and cars
03:17When we go shopping?
03:19The answer could be
03:20Very surprisingly simple
03:22Combine one of my favourite things
03:24The bicycle
03:25With one of my least favourite things
03:27The shopping trolley
03:29And to make the world's first supermarket trolley bike
03:32I'm going to need these two
03:34By engineer Simi
03:37So I've got this plan
03:39Who collects vintage socks
03:41We'll heat it up a little bit
03:43To anneal it
03:44And then we'll hammer it out
03:45And the incomprehensible
03:47Tony the tool
03:48That's cunning fun, huh?
03:50Who's good with wood
03:53And always ready with a power tool
03:56And of course
03:57Our up-for-anything crew
03:59Who are also along for the ride
04:01Sorry Lottie
04:05So here is the supermarket trolley
04:06We've also got a couple of bicycles
04:08That I've recovered from the recycling centre
04:11And we've got to combine the two
04:13Such that you ride your supermarket trolley
04:17To the supermarket
04:18Around it
04:19And back out again
04:21Without getting off
04:22It's quite a challenge
04:23Because A
04:24This is surprisingly heavy
04:25And as we know
04:27Supermarket trolleys do not
04:29Steer
04:30So I've heard
04:31So I've heard
04:32I've never actually driven one
04:33Let me have a go
04:34This
04:35This is completely
04:37It's random
04:38You can tell he never ever shopped in his life
04:41Obviously normally my butler does the shopping
04:43So I've got no idea how a supermarket trolley
04:45How it works
04:46Could you make it a sidecar?
04:49I hadn't thought of that
04:50I'll be honest
04:51It's a good reason
04:52Yeah
04:53It's gonna be a bit too wide
04:54Why?
04:55Have you ever ridden something with a sidecar?
04:57It's very odd
05:01Where's the break?
05:04Nice idea Tony
05:05But we can eliminate it
05:07We gather around the whiteboard
05:09For one of Simi's excellent engineering drawings
05:12So in my head
05:14That is our trolley
05:16Axle
05:17Yeah
05:18Some kind of pivot from this point
05:21Anywhere between here and here
05:23Going back up to our frame
05:25Which will be seat
05:28Post
05:29However that's attached
05:31So you've got your pedals
05:32And then your back wheel
05:35The clever bit will be that pivot there
05:38Whether it's underneath the axle
05:40Or somewhere back here
05:43I'll just turn this upside down
05:45Because we can
05:46And it will stand up
05:47So in effect
05:49That's chopped off there
05:52So the trolley
05:54Is in effect sitting on here
05:56Yes
05:57So the trolley can do
05:58Ah
05:59So this is just an elaborate
06:01Steering mechanism
06:02Do we have to ride it upside down?
06:04Only in Australia
06:06It's fantastic
06:09You get on this
06:10Outside your house
06:12Or in your garage
06:13Or your shed
06:14Or whatever
06:15You set off
06:16And you don't get off again
06:17Until you're back at your house
06:18With your shopping
06:19If your house is the right shape
06:20You could ride it into your kitchen
06:23Right
06:24Cup of tea
06:28And when I say a cup of tea
06:30I of course mean a pint of beer
06:33In a very nice pub I know
06:35Morning
06:36And I know it's very nice
06:37Because it's my pub
06:39And my regular customers
06:40Know that I'm always up
06:41For taking a look
06:42At their broken odds and sods
06:44As I have a bit of a reputation
06:46For mending stuff
06:50And sure enough
06:51No sooner have I sat down with Sim
06:53Than local Amy turns up
06:55With a precious family heirloom
06:59Hello
07:00Hello
07:01Are you Amy?
07:02I am
07:03Ta-da
07:04Is it a train set?
07:05It is
07:06Oh
07:07Do sit down
07:08Thank you
07:09And be prepared to sit down for a long time
07:10This is far too old to be yours
07:11He says diplomatically
07:12Because this is from the fifties
07:15Yes
07:16It is my dad's
07:17What is wrong with it?
07:19The
07:20Transformer
07:22Seems to be the problem
07:24It smokes after it's done a couple of rounds
07:28Does it?
07:29Oh
07:30So you've set it up?
07:31Not for about ten years
07:33Or more
07:34And why now suddenly have you decided?
07:37Dad turned 75 this year
07:39So I thought it might be quite a nice thing
07:42To
07:43Reinstate his childhood train set
07:46Does he know you're doing this?
07:47No he doesn't
07:48So if we fail
07:49We can just
07:50I have to admit this is slightly my specialism
07:54Mending toys and especially toy trains
07:58So this is post 1959
08:00I know that by the coupling
08:01But the track I know is from the late fifties
08:04Because this is the first series of track the trying made
08:07Oh wow
08:08Quite possibly in the Richmond factory before they move to Margate
08:14I get all the girls
08:16That is the 060 Ginty
08:20Okay
08:21These are trying trains
08:22Ah
08:23Which later became trying Hornby and then Hornby
08:25Today's Hornby railways are actually directly descended from these
08:28Not the Hornby of Liverpool
08:29Oh yes that's the automatic hopper
08:31So that goes over a little line side thing
08:33Oh look at that
08:34And then drops the coal out
08:35This will probably be largely a strip and clean job
08:39What we ought to do first Simi is find out what's wrong with that
08:42Because nothing will happen without that
08:44The transformer smokes or did last time you plugged it in?
08:47Did last time I plugged it in
08:48Did you unplug it immediately or did you run around going oh my god it's smoking?
08:51I unplugged it immediately
08:52Excellent
08:53So you may have saved the windings
08:55By the way the other thing that's very encouraging about this is your motion work is intact
09:00That little bracket is intact they often break
09:02Okay
09:03And so I think your father took very good care of this
09:06Right
09:07We are going to plug in the transformer
09:12For those of you who don't know the transformer takes the mains voltage AC
09:16Transforms it into a safe 12 volt DC
09:20So that it doesn't kill you when you put your fingers on the rails
09:22And then that goes through this control box which is basically a rear stat
09:26And that controls the speed of the train
09:28Right so if you plug that in and it doesn't go bang or burst into flames
09:32We can then check the output of those which should be 12 volts DC shouldn't it?
09:37It should be
09:38Should we go for it?
09:39Go for it
09:40Bang bang
09:41Is it humming?
09:43Yes it is
09:44Right 12 volts DC
09:46DC
09:4714.5
09:4914.6
09:50It's about 14 volts
09:51That's about right
09:52Because there will be a little bit of loss in here
09:54If there's any kind of short in that
09:56Which would short that
09:57Which would make that probably smoke
09:59Now we're going to see if this which is the train speed controller works
10:04Happy?
10:05Yes I'll hold the probes
10:06I will get, I'll be the quick reacting switch
10:10Hang on, hang on, hang on
10:12Okay so your IC switch and viewing display
10:15If it starts to smoke I will turn it off
10:20Yes we've got an output
10:21So you've got 14 volts
10:22Turn the knob
10:23Just seeing if that's getting more warm
10:25There you go
10:26It works
10:27Yeah so if I now take those two wires
10:30And apply them to the two sides of the locomotives' electric motor
10:34We might see some life
10:37Ready?
10:41Excellent
10:42That's remarkable
10:43God you're good
10:44Given the amount of dirt in there
10:48What was that?
10:49That!
10:50A pigeon
10:51That is more than a pigeon
10:53A crow's s**t on the train set
10:56I love my arm
10:58What?
10:59What?
11:00What?
11:01Oh God
11:02Absolute f*****d
11:03The update is that the transformer and the rear stack works
11:08But the train set is now covered in guano
11:10And so is Amy's arm
11:12But it's a small price to pay
11:14But it's a small price to pay
11:15And it is considered good luck in some circles
11:17For a bird to crap on your head isn't it?
11:19So they say
11:20You find us deep in Wiltshire
11:33In the middle of a groundbreaking engineering project
11:36To solve both the environmental issues and inconvenience of the weekly shop
11:41By joining together a bike and a trolley
11:46Which we are in the middle of dismantling
11:48Look what I've found
11:50Conveniently discarded at the back of my shed
11:52I happened upon some wheels
11:54Which are just the right size
11:56Chuck it under and see
11:57Don't we I reckon?
12:00Oh that's almost bespoke
12:02That is absolutely brilliant
12:04Just cut these, these
12:06I'd weld it on first
12:08Should we do that?
12:09Let's do that
12:10Before we weld anything together
12:12We're going to have to strip both our trolley and our bike
12:15Of anything not strictly necessary
12:17I think we'll have a montage here
12:19With some slightly twee doing music
12:22From a free music library somewhere
12:24Tony and I use brute force
12:27Wall
12:28Dispose
12:30This bit can go as well
12:32And a hammer
12:34To get rid of that child seat
12:36Job done
12:37While Simi preps the bike's headstock
12:39Ready to see if it will fit nicely onto the trolley
12:42So that's about the right height
12:43And with our three wheeled prototype beginning to resemble Simi's drawing
12:48I think we've just about had enough of this twee music
12:51So if we cut this off
12:53Mount that vertical
12:54Does it need to be vertical?
12:55This needs to be vertical
12:56Because when you ride a two wheeled bicycle
12:58When you go around a bend you lean and you have a thing called rake and trail
13:13Which is basically the distance between the centre of that and the centre of the pivot
13:17And that is at an angle
13:18But it doesn't want to be at an angle on something with two wheels at the front
13:21Otherwise when you turn one wheel we'll be trying to lift off the ground
13:24So that needs to be vertical
13:26If we put a plate on here
13:28Because all this is very strong
13:30And we attach the fork straight to that plate
13:33Because these trolleys they're designed to hold a lot of weight
13:36They are a full weekly shop and up to two children
13:39Yes
13:40Are you confident of where the plate should go?
13:43Well the box section
13:44I'm going to go and cut some box section now
13:46Okay
13:47We'll measure that
13:48And get those in
13:49And we'll cut
13:51The headstock off
13:56Happy?
13:57Yes
13:58Do you want me to stand on the other end to keep it stable?
13:59Just mind your eyes everybody
14:04This box section cut from Simi's old barbecue
14:08Will form a frame that the bike's fork will be welded onto
14:14Right now more of that
14:15Simi's angle grinding with his shorts on is slightly not HSE
14:22No it isn't
14:23So please remember to wear the appropriate protective equipment
14:26If you're making a trolley bike at home
14:28Right the next thing I think is we cut this
14:31Yeah
14:33But you haven't got any goggles on so don't get anywhere near
14:36What do you want me to put some goggles?
14:37Yeah put some goggles on
14:38Thank you
14:41Right don't mind my eyes then
14:45We're cutting the bike frame so that we can establish the essential geometry
14:49Between the headstock and the trolley
14:51And also so that there will be room for me to pedal
14:55Send it over
14:56Right nice and solid
14:58Yeah
14:59That feels like a terrible thing you've just done
15:08What chop a bicycle at?
15:09Yeah
15:10It's only now
15:11We're going to make it better though
15:14Okay
15:15Will our cut down bicycle pivot correctly with our stripped back trolley?
15:20That is again almost too good to be true
15:24You lose a little bit of trolley space but let's be honest
15:28We're men we're going to go and buy three bottles of beer
15:31A tin of beans and sausages and some bread
15:33That is very true
15:35What that you could fit in a shopping basket
15:37Yeah
15:38Or just in your backpack I mean or your pockets even
15:41Why are we doing this?
15:42Because it's fun
15:43Okay
15:58Yes innovation is fun but it's also very hard work
16:11The summer sun beats down or this grafting makes for a very hot and sweaty team
16:18So I'm wondering if there's a way to cool down that doesn't involve expensive air conditioning or electric fans but perhaps something a little more home made
16:27It's very hot today it's about 28 degrees outside it's about well up to 10 degrees hotter in the workshop and we've been getting very sweaty
16:36So what if you could make cooling clothing?
16:39We have these packs these are existing commercially available chili bin packs and we also have some sodium polyacrylate which is basically what goes in here mixed with water and it improves its ability to hold cold
16:56So what we're going to do and by we I mean Simi because he can operate the sewing machine expertly is make a t-shirt for me
17:04We're also going to make Tony a pair of cooling pants
17:08We're going to use two pairs of these waterproof pants
17:11One inside the other skillfully sewn together by Simi so that the whole thing can be filled with the chili medium which is what you're going to make Tony
17:24Is this making any sense?
17:26Unfortunately yes
17:28Okay
17:29This is not just about humiliating Tony
17:32We're trying to do our bit to fight global warming by finding low-fi low-energy ways to stay cool
17:40As there are quite fortuitously six of these little ones
17:45Could I have a six-pack?
17:47Other way around
17:49Is it?
17:50I know you've never seen one before
17:51Yeah well I've not
17:54Not in the mirror I haven't, no
17:56So, three there
17:58No, no, no
18:01Two two two
18:02Yes
18:03What?
18:04Two two two, that's it
18:06Oh yes, that looks like action man's torso
18:09Yeah
18:11So Simi gets to work sewing individual pockets for the ready-made ice packs to sit in
18:16Go on, shove it in
18:18Yeah, that's good
18:19There you go
18:21Shall I hold that up?
18:22And we can see what the effect of the six-pack is
18:25Excellent
18:27That's pretty good
18:28Excellent
18:30I'll look like one of those, you know, cartoon superheroes
18:33Right, so next Simi is going to incorporate these larger packs into the shoulders
18:38And then we'll put it in the fridge
18:40But first we need to fill Tony's pants with our homemade cooling gel
18:45Right, so Tony and I will make up the gel
18:47It's ten grams per litre, which doesn't sound like enough, but apparently that's right according to the instructions
18:53Sodium polyacrylate, also known as water lock
18:57Shall we do one litre first and get a bit of chalk?
18:59Is often used in nappies and fire retardants because it can absorb up to 300 times its weight in water
19:05Wow
19:08Is it turning into really fat?
19:09Okay, look at that
19:11It's used in cool packs because the water gets trapped inside the gel, reducing the rate at which it heats up
19:18It looks a bit like crushed ice, doesn't it?
19:20Yeah, it looks like a slushie
19:21So it stays cooler for longer than plain ice
19:26It's fantastic
19:28Now we've mixed up the cooling gel, it's time for Simi to sew individual pocketed channels into Tony's massive pants
19:36To accommodate all the sodium polyacrylate mixture
19:39This is wilder stuff
19:42There's something slightly unsavoury about it
19:45Your pants are also becoming very heavy, Tony
19:48But
19:51That's just...
19:55It's just...
19:57What are you doing to me?
20:00What are you doing to me?
20:03So, we're ready to put our cool clothing in the fridge
20:08We'll leave them in there for an hour
20:10Put them on and see how good we look
20:12And how good we feel
20:14And just a few hours later
20:16Enough time for a walk, a pint and two shakes of a lamb's tail
20:20Right men
20:22It's time to see if our hand-sewn cooling clothing actually works
20:26I'm gonna go first, Tony, if that's okay
20:28Ooh, yes, it feels cold
20:36Just put your hand on there
20:38Ooh
20:40That's gonna be nice to wear
20:42Ooh
20:43Right, I'm going to disappear into the lav
20:45And then emerge
20:47To gasps of amazement
20:49Very cold
20:50I've got to say...
20:57It's so realistic
21:02That's great!
21:05I've got to say
21:07Okay, apart from that we've got the six-pack a bit low
21:09All right
21:11But the sensation is fantastic
21:14You look very broad
21:16But it's really good, these bits especially
21:19Because they cool down the sort of base of your neck
21:21It's really nice
21:23It does square your shoulders off as well
21:25Doesn't it just?
21:28How cold is it? Is it comfortable?
21:29It's... yeah, it is actually
21:32There's no... there are no sharp edges or anything
21:35I'm definitely cooler
21:37I'm cooling down
21:39Even as I stand here talking to you
21:41And when you touch it, do you actually think you've got abs?
21:43Are you convincing yourself? It's like...
21:45Yeah
21:46Just oozing sex appeal
21:56And then we decided it was time for Tony to put his pants on
22:00Oh my God
22:04I'm never going to keep these on
22:09Come on Tony
22:13Do I have to?
22:14Do I have to?
22:16Have a look?
22:17They're going to fall down
22:22Falling down
22:24I'm like that
22:26I feel like I've got some sort of disease
22:31Are you cooler?
22:33Yeah, cooler but mainly my thighs
22:35It's all dropped down
22:37It looks like you've had a prolapse of every single organ
22:40They're coming down
22:42Feel it, it's not right
22:44No!
22:46It's horrible!
22:48Okay
22:50I think you should sit down, Tony
22:52So we don't have to look at that
22:54Arrgh!
22:55I wish to be able to see less well
23:00What can we conclude from that?
23:03As an idea
23:05I'm not so sure about the pants
23:07But the shirt, I think as an idea it works
23:09If these were a bit thinner
23:11And they were more evenly distributed
23:13Chuck your t-shirt in the fridge the night before
23:16Get up, slip it on
23:18Walk out
23:20Ice cool
23:22Oh, it's leaking
23:24Oh, fuck!
23:26Sorry, James
23:28It's squeezing at me back
23:30Sorry, James
23:32It's squeezing at me back
23:36Oh, my God
23:38Oh, my God
23:40Right, I think that's the end of that scene
23:44I do hope so
23:45If so
23:55Welcome back to Wiltshire
23:57Where we've been tackling climate change
23:59By inventing cool clothing
24:01And welding together a supermarket trolley and a bike
24:04Obviously
24:05And now we're about to attempt to repair a broken train set
24:09As a surprise for Amy's dad's 75th birthday
24:13No pressure then
24:15Is everybody ready?
24:17Shall I speak?
24:19Yeah
24:20Right, the toy trains have been cleansed of bird poo
24:24By a very low-paid junior researcher
24:27We're now ready to start mending them
24:29Which in this instance isn't very difficult
24:31Because I can reveal that I had almost exactly this train set
24:37In fact, I still have it
24:39It had these two locomotives
24:41The 060 Jinty and the 462 Princess Elizabeth
24:46I also have the guards van
24:49This green coal truck
24:52I have that flat one
24:54I have one of these green ones
24:56And I did have one of these blood and custard coaches
24:58But my big sister trod on it in about 1969
25:03And I haven't seen her since
25:05Nevertheless, there is a joy in mending things
25:08And there's a particular joy in mending these trains
25:11Because actually over the years I've mended hundreds of them
25:14They're very, very simple mechanisms
25:17All of these trying locomotives were designed to come apart
25:20By the removal of one screw down the chimney on these early ones
25:23And now that will pop out
25:27There it is
25:29So problems with the motor
25:31Tend to be that the magnet becomes weak
25:34A good test is if you put the motor down and put your screwdriver on it
25:38I can sort of pick the motor up with the screwdriver
25:41Which is a rough-and-ready test
25:42But it would be remiss of us not to use the remagnetiser
25:49Sting! Da-da-da! The remagnetiser
25:53It's in here
25:55It's a remarkable thing
25:57I do like the use of the Meccano
25:59Yes, it's Meccano themed
26:01This was made by a man called Ronald Dodds
26:03Who's a toy train mender
26:05It's not something you like you to have lying around in the home to be honest
26:09In fact I've never met anybody else in the world
26:11Apart from Ronald Dodds
26:13Who has a toy train magnet remagnetiser
26:15Using this compass
26:17You establish the north pole of the magnet
26:20This isn't absolutely crucial
26:22But it means that the locomotive will run in the correct direction
26:25I meant to say actually
26:27You shouldn't put anything like your watch or your mobile phone
26:29Anywhere near this
26:30Or really expensive cameras
26:33Or your expensive cameras
26:35Are you ready?
26:36For remagnetising
26:38Makes quite a loud noise to brace yourself
26:43That's it
26:45These are basically coils
26:47With soft iron bars in them
26:49And they become a magnet when you apply the current
26:51And that remagnetises because it's touching it
26:54The magnet in the motor
26:56The magnet in the motor is essential to its operation
26:58You can see that they're stuck to it now
27:00And doing my screwdriver test
27:04I don't know how that's happened
27:09Well I've somehow demagnetised it
27:11Which means it...
27:13Hang on
27:15Did I put it in the wrong way around?
27:16I think you did
27:17Yeah but that should just magnetise it in the other direction
27:20Well...
27:23How can I have killed a magnet?
27:26Let's try that again
27:28That's the one
27:30That's the one
27:32Yes!
27:34So the screwdriver test works
27:36It's back
27:38It's back
27:40Now let's test the remagnetised motor for real
27:42Could you give me some juice on the controller?
27:45Yes
27:47Look at that
27:48Finally an electromotive force
27:56That's nice
27:58I like the little sparks
28:00And with the sparks flying
28:02It's time for a track test
28:04Okay Simi if you could...
28:06Plug in
28:08Initiate the transformer please
28:09The transformer is on
28:10I can hear it
28:12The transformer is buzzing
28:14So here we go
28:15Are we ready?
28:16I'm going...
28:17I don't want to do this
28:18Go on!
28:23It wants to go
28:25And yet it doesn't
28:27I've got a bad feeling about this repair for some reason
28:30I don't know why it's just...
28:32I should be...
28:34I've done this dozens of times
28:36It doesn't work
28:38Time to run some diagnostics
28:40First we check the power
28:42We've got 14 volts there
28:44So we eliminate that
28:46Then we check the wiring
28:48That connection is good
28:50So there's no short
28:52Then clean the track
28:55And clean the wheels
28:58Sometimes you get sort of invisible dirt
29:01And finally
29:03We've had a bit of a fiddle around
29:04And we isolated the problem to the controller
29:06The rear stat
29:08We wiggled it and wiggled it
29:09And hopefully cleaned it up
29:11So it's just dirt
29:12And it needs cleaning like most things in life
29:14And it's not really surprising after all those years in the loft
29:18What is it that Benjamin Franklin said
29:21He who lives by hope alone will die farting
29:25Did he say that?
29:29Apparently so
29:31Right, that is running, it's buzzing
29:33Here we go
29:35Look at that!
29:37Yes!
29:38That's great!
29:39That is fantastic
29:41That's very pleasing
29:42Amy's father
29:43How old is he?
29:4475 and a half
29:45You know
29:46Present it to them
29:47And they'll go
29:48Wow, that's amazing
29:49Take it home and put it back in the loft again
29:51For another half century
29:54Excellent!
29:55Very good
29:58Well, I enjoyed that
30:02But as much as I'd like to play with Dave's train set all day
30:05I have more pressing matters over in my pub
30:09We're trying to invent new pub games to entertain the customers
30:14So they'll buy more beer
30:15And eat more food
30:17And today we have invented a garden game
30:20Based on an old English idiom
30:24This is called
30:25Two birds, one stone
30:27Simi, if you'd like to activate the mechanism
30:30We fashioned two birds out of thin plywood
30:32Cut out a small round hole in each
30:35And mounted them onto a pivot system
30:38As you can see the two birds swing
30:39They've got holes in them
30:40The idea is that you have to throw a stone
30:43At the point where the holes line up
30:45And it goes through both birds
30:47And then you win a prize
30:50That's it
30:51That's the tweet
30:53Right, who's going first?
30:54Tony?
30:55Yep
30:56There's a jug there
30:57Full of carefully selected pebbles
31:00We need to establish the throwing distance
31:02Oh
31:04That's good
31:06That's canny fun, aren't
31:07No, that's
31:08Well, it can't be too easy
31:09I don't think it's going to be easy
31:10It's there in line with the
31:11Get three shots each
31:13Okay, Simi, activate the two birds mechanism
31:15Do you think it's overarm or underarm?
31:17I'm going to go underarm
31:19Okay
31:21Rubbish
31:23See, it's harder than you think
31:26Nope
31:28Pants
31:29Are you aiming for the hole?
31:33Oh, that wasn't
31:34That was very low
31:35Simi, do you want to go?
31:36I'll activate the birds
31:37Or is he selecting his stones very carefully?
31:39He's hidden the good stones at the bottom
31:45Rubbing
31:48Don't break it
31:49Oh, that one bird
31:51Oh, that one bird
31:53This is one of those games that
31:55I mean, it doesn't really mean anything
31:57But once it starts
31:58It sort of becomes very important, doesn't it?
32:01Like so many things in life, timing is everything
32:05I think it starts from when you lift your arms
32:08There it is
32:09It's about the rhythm of the throw versus the bird's movement
32:15About understanding space and time
32:19Oh
32:21Or it's about throwing a stone at some birds
32:24Did that go through?
32:25I think that went through
32:27It was a bit of an in-off, but it did go through
32:30So you are the first person ever to score at Two Birds One Stone
32:34Congratulations
32:35Thank you very much
32:36It's 1-0-0 to Sim
32:38With only one stone through the hole
32:40We invite members of the crew and a few locals to play along
32:46Oh, that was very close
32:48What's this game called?
32:49Two Birds One Stone
32:50Of course it is
32:52I can't do it, I obviously can't
32:55We even let cameraman Will have a go
32:57I'll film it
32:59Yeah
33:00What does this button do?
33:02Rubbish
33:03Where are you from, sir?
33:04Norway
33:05Norway
33:06Norway
33:08Norway
33:10Turns out to kill two birds in this game
33:12Takes 12 members of the crew
33:14Three locals
33:15Some bloke from Norway
33:16And about 500 stones
33:18Before
33:20We eventually hit the target
33:22But it's very satisfying when it's achieved
33:28That was...
33:29That was an almost perfect shot
33:32So it's a fantastic game actually
33:34I'm amazed no one's ever thought of it
33:37Every pub in England will have one of these soon
33:41And that's a promise
33:43In Wiltshire, we're back in my pub
33:53And after a lot of delays, cancellations and derailments
33:56Sim and I are now ready to hand back this repaired and perfectly running train set
34:01That Amy brought us
34:03When she heard that the Royal Oak is a pub of mending
34:05So Amy, who brought us this broken train set a few weeks ago, is now waiting in the bar of the pub with her dad, Dave, who was 75 a couple of months ago
34:19This is actually his train set
34:21He apparently hasn't seen it for many, many years
34:24He certainly hasn't seen it running for probably decades
34:27And this is meant to be a big, slightly belated, birthday surprise for him
34:34So it will either be very emotional because he loved his train set
34:38Or he's completely forgotten about it and wonders what the hell we're doing
34:43We're going to find out in about 15 seconds
34:48They're coming
34:50There's Amy and there's...
34:51There's Amy
34:52Dave, her dad
34:54Hello
34:55Hello
34:56How are you?
34:57Good thank you, how are you?
34:58Very well, thank you
34:59You must be Dave
35:00Hello Mr May
35:02Happy birthday, belatedly
35:04Thank you very much
35:05I gather it was a big one
35:06We have something over here for you
35:08Do you recognise it?
35:10I do
35:11And does it work?
35:13Well, let's find out, sir, if you'd like to take the driver's seat
35:18Is this the sort of thing that you thought Amy would do for your birthday?
35:22I think
35:23Amy's always had an attachment to junk and really wouldn't throw anything away and she's just a hoarder and whereas, yeah, I put it away in the loft and forgot about it really
35:46Do you think when you get home you'll simply put it back in the loft?
35:50Probably
35:52I've now got a policy where nothing goes in the loft, so because if it's in the loft you don't need it
36:00Do you mean you'll put it in the bin?
36:03No
36:04No
36:05But it will be passed on to someone else
36:07Yes
36:08Yeah
36:09Passed on to the boys
36:10Well, that wasn't quite the emotional reaction we were hoping for, but wait till he sees it go
36:17If you'd like to give it maximum berries forward, sir, which is clockwise
36:22It should
36:24There you go
36:25When was the last time you saw that going round?
36:37Forty years
36:39Really?
36:40It is bringing back memories of my childhood and I did spend a lot of time setting it up and going round buying model kits where you used to have blue station buildings together and I mean I honestly felt that I wouldn't see it again
36:57That's more like it, Dave
37:00Oh, it's just brilliant, it's just really lovely to see it running after all these years and with the age behind it
37:07It was actually a pleasure to make it work again because as we've been saying there's something about bringing a train set back to life because you know that you're effectively resurrecting somebody's childhood and the joy of childhood and the excitement because back when we were young
37:22Oh God, here I go, the train set and a new bicycle, those were the top presents
37:27The eye tones of the day, weren't they?
37:28Yes, exactly, you couldn't have a more exciting thing and there it is and it still works, it was future proofed
37:35Gosh, am I going to get a bill now?
37:38Yes
37:40But it's okay, we're going to do it in 1959, Matty, so it's two and six
37:48Thank you, James
37:49Enjoy
37:50Thank you
37:52And now from one mode of transport to another, I set off on a bike ride across the countryside as I return to the problem of unenvironmental supermarket trips
38:10Except this isn't just a normal bike, this is a trolley bike
38:17The perfect merging of two engineering miracles
38:20This is the weirdest thing in the world
38:22Expertly combined by me, Simi and Tony to create something that outshines both
38:29It offers the ease and joy of riding a bike straight to your destination
38:34With the convenience of a trolley ready and primed to receive a shed load of shopping
38:39Ah
38:42And in the knowledge that you can do it in one go without ever leaving the saddle
38:47Sorry, I can't stop
38:48I can't stop
38:49And here it is, in all its glory, on its inaugural ride to a well-known supermarket
38:56Oh, sorry
38:57Morning
38:58Morning
38:59Morning
39:00Yep
39:01And I'm into the supermarket, I'm still not off my bike
39:05Will it get through the doors?
39:06Yes
39:08And we're in
39:13Right
39:15Er...
39:16Rice and pasta
39:17Seasonal condiments
39:19Since I hate that word
39:20So, it works as a bike
39:22Morning
39:23But now let's see how it fares as a trolley
39:27Crisps and snacks, here we go
39:34Peanuts
39:37Epic
39:39Oh, look
39:41Beans and sausages
39:42It's quite fast actually, it accelerates very well
39:57Bit of skid
39:59Coming left
40:01Thank you
40:03Pies
40:08Chocolate fingers
40:09Oh, they're high
40:13Peep
40:17This is just brilliant
40:20I mean, all I'm doing is going for a bike ride really
40:23It'll just make shopping pleasurable
40:26Um, straight line steering is quite good
40:29It's got a good turning circle
40:30It does misbehave slightly in corners
40:32You have to remember about the back pedal brake
40:35So, the geometry may need a little bit of work
40:37But the basic idea is good
40:40Morning
40:42And it's proving very popular with happy shoppers
40:46Morning
40:50Thank you very much
40:52Whee!
40:53Thank you so much
40:54Happy travels
40:56Enjoying shopping?
40:57Love it
40:58That's such an old fashioned idea
41:00Gwede
41:01Thank you
41:14Eh, look at those people pushing a trolley
41:16Some people are absolutely stuck in the 1970's

43:40Y lo haría.
43:45Gracias.
43:46¿Has disfrutado?
43:47Sí, lo haría.
44:01Gracias.
