He says the batters threw away many good starts, which sees the men in maroon trailing the three-game series 1-0.

00:00With the West Indies trailing New Zealand 1-0 in the three-game series,
00:04it's do or die for the visitors going into the third and final test in Mount Banganui.
00:08The first test in Christchurch was drawn before the men in Maroon were blown away inside three days in Wellington.
00:15Windies batting coach Floyd Ruefer believes the Caribbean side did play some good cricket, but threw away the advantage.
00:22We put ourselves in very good positions, you know, being in control of the game,
00:26but you can see that we didn't control the game for long enough periods of time,
00:33especially in the batting department where we, you know, we put ourselves in good positions and they never really continue.
00:39So going into this game, this is something that we, you know, we spoke about
00:43and it's something that we want to improve on in terms of, you know,
00:47when we're in control of the situation to stay in control for longer periods of time.
00:51Ruefer says it's important to bat for long periods if the team has to come out on top.
00:56As such, he's urging the batters to occupy the crease and the individual milestones will follow.
01:02We had a lot of starts, but unfortunately, you know, none of those starts converted into hundreds.
01:08It's just for us now to, like I said before, understand when we're in control in the situation,
01:13you know, when we do get those starts to respect the starts and, you know, try to, you know, capitalize on them.
01:19You know, scoring 100 in test cricket is always a challenge.
01:23You've got to bat for long periods.
01:25We believe that, you know, once you bat four hours plus in a test match, you know, you guarantee 100.
01:30Regarding the wicket in New Zealand, Ruefer knows it can test the batsmen.
01:35Having said that, he feels having the right approach will help in reaping the rewards.
01:39All the pitches here are green, but I still think that the first two days, you know, it's good for bowling.
01:46The ball would nip around a lot here in New Zealand.
01:48So it's just a matter of, you know, like I said, respecting the starts.
01:52There's certain shots you can and cannot play, you know, early in New Zealand with the new ball.
01:56So it's just, you know, staying disciplined.
01:58The game begins on Wednesday from 6 p.m. TT time with Tej Narayan Chandipal missing since he hasn't recovered from a side strain.
