00:02They're people who accompany women to an abortion when they have no one else.

00:07We notice that a lot of people just need somebody that listens without openly judging them.
00:13The Buddy Program is volunteer-based and originated in the US.
00:17The service wants to make a difference, especially in those areas where stigma and protests make
00:22it harder to go through an abortion.
00:24Miriam lives in the Netherlands, a country that is known for its liberal abortion laws.
00:29Since the 1970s, it has turned into a destination for women from places with stricter legislation,
00:35such as Poland or Germany.
00:37Even in the Netherlands, outside some clinics, anti-abortion activists try to dissuade people
00:42from going through the procedure.
00:44I remember walking with somebody past them and I had put myself in between.
00:50They came very close to me and they touched me.
00:53It was very useful to just have a buffer.
00:57But it's not the Buddy's job to intervene.
00:59In special training sessions, they learn not to influence decisions or give medical advice.
01:03If they need somebody to help them make a decision, I have to refer them to organizations
01:09that are specialized.
01:11Research shows that as well as experiencing stigma, many women feel they lack autonomy when
01:15seeking abortion care.
01:17If they want to be alone, of course, no problem.
01:19But if you don't want to be alone, you don't have to be.
01:21And that's very important to me that, as a society, we provide the opportunity for people
01:26to not be alone.
