00:00With seafood, fish, and other products from the sea, we can make enough food for everybody,
00:06but it has to be done in a way that can be maintained over a long period.
00:13The most important way is to try to find a product that's produced locally,
00:18and also to find one that's of the right season,
00:21so that the fish population can develop naturally without extra pressure.
00:26This includes buying fish that's big enough and in the right season,
00:30so that they can reproduce and multiply in the right way.
00:35In general, it's not very possible to maintain the consumption in Europe just with local or European sources.
00:42So a lot of the seafood that you see in the markets and the restaurants is imported.
00:46In certain regions, it's better than others, so it depends on how the fisheries are managed in those areas.
00:52So this is when it's important to make intelligent decisions about what to buy,
00:56and also include aquaculture options as well.
01:00The wild fisheries stocks are not going to increase any time soon,
01:04and so if we want to increase food production to support a growing population,
01:08we need to turn to aquaculture.
01:10But it has to be done in a way that is manageable without causing impact near the coast.
01:15And this means going further and further offshore, which increases the cost.
01:19So there's a lot of balancing that has to be done to increase and scale up aquaculture.
01:23It really is one of the only ways to massively increase the scale of fish consumption.
01:28Each of us can make a difference, even if it's small,
01:31but by doing that and creating a community around making responsible decisions,
01:36collectively you make an impact.
01:37If you have the right information and the consumers can access it,
01:41then we can make a difference collectively.
