00:00There's nothing all that unusual about making a short film these days, especially as film gear gets cheaper.
00:14What is unusual are students on limited funds who embark on making a feature-length flick based on a slightly odd genre.
00:22David Farrier reports on the upcoming B-sharp, C-flat.
00:26There's no doubt Bollywood is a strange beast.
00:29It originated in India almost 100 years ago, but slowly white Western culture has crept in.
00:35So much so that even Michael Jackson has an influence.
00:44Even New Zealand is getting into it, and last year a bunch of uni students embarked on making a feature-length Bollywood film.
00:51Well, we sent out a lot of notices for auditions, but a few people turned up.
00:57I ended up having to drag a lot of my friends along.
01:00That plan had mixed results.
01:03Every now and then I fall apart, and I need you now tonight.
01:10But eventually they found the perfect people.
01:13It was the bubblings of Jack wanting to do a musical, and then suddenly we discover that he's written us into the league characters.
01:18And I was sort of saying, no, Jack, no, I'm not going to be in it.
01:22Sorry, you find someone else, I'll dance, but I won't be acting.
01:25Sorry.
01:26But she and lead man AJ were finally convinced.
01:29And in amongst all the practice and rehearsal, they transformed themselves into lean, sexy Bollywood leads.
01:35Now, while the core team is Asian, they certainly aren't Indian.
01:47This hasn't stopped them from composing their own Bollywood-influenced music and soundtrack to hold the movie together.
01:52I only watched about two Bollywood films, and that's my sole source of inspiration.
02:03And again, I didn't try to do full-on Bollywood.
02:08I just wanted to imitate that spirit.
02:10As for the story, well, like any Bollywood film, it takes a backseat to the singing and flirting.
02:15But in this film, it has something to do with a guy who falls in love with a girl who loves music and then goes deaf.
02:21And somewhere in there, they all get attacked by ninjas.
02:24But don't take my word for it.
02:26I'd say it was a film made with love, inspired by Bollywood themes and music,
02:32with people coming together to make a story that's incredibly cheesy and fun.
02:38So, there's no Michael Jackson then?
02:40That would be a no.
02:45And that's definitely not a bad thing.
02:53David Ferrier, 3 News.
