00:00Let's go back to Rex Quayle, who's on the scene down there at Bondi Beach.

00:04Rex, what do you have for us?

00:06Hello again. I've just been speaking with a few more people.

00:09I spoke to one gentleman who said he saw at least three people die in front of him.

00:16There's reports of four behind me.

00:19I'm not going to show it, but behind me in this scene,

00:22we can see what very much looks like someone that has passed away.

00:26Numbers are unconfirmed at this stage, but yes, we can confirm that there have been some deaths.

00:33And Rex, in the midst of this tragedy, we must presume at this stage

00:37that some young children have been caught up in this massacre.

00:41I can't confirm if any young children have been hit,

00:46but there were definitely children at this festival.

00:48That's a given. I saw families hugging each other in tears.

00:52There were kids crying about saying that they were trying to run away and flee the scene.

00:57I cannot confirm if any kids have been caught or hit or injured,

01:01but I can confirm that yes, there are some kids here.

01:03What it looks like is there were some kids on the festival,

01:06there were some kids' animation being played.

01:08So we heard one person say that it was a children's Jewish festival.

01:12Again, I don't have the absolute latest for you on that one,

01:16but that's what people have been telling me on the ground.

01:17And we're seeing pictures, Rex, of people fleeing the scene,

01:20running as far from Bondi Beach as they possibly can, as quickly as they can.

01:24But on the other side, I'm sure the police presence

01:27and the emergency services heading into that area must be overwhelming by now.

01:32Oh, everywhere. Everywhere.

01:34They've absolutely swarmed in this last 45 minutes to an hour.

01:37There are... There's too many to count.

01:40Too many to count.

01:41There are police, there are ambulance, there are trucks everywhere,

01:44there are paramedics, the lifesavers.

01:48They've been seeing people throwing on their life-saving stuff.

01:50It looks like some volunteer lifeguards who are, you know, just dining nearby.

01:54Volunteer ambos as well, coming out, throwing on their stuff.

01:58Yeah, it is absolutely everywhere.

02:00There is a serious, serious emergency response here.

02:03And if the gunman's intention was to create absolute fear

02:07and absolute loathing on what is a very famous stretch of Australian sand,

02:11it has been achieved this evening.

02:13It certainly seems that way, Mark.

02:17Again, cannot confirm a motive, cannot confirm anything else

02:21except for the fact that these two shooters shot on a sacred day,

02:25an important day, the Jewish community

02:26in one of the most populated Jewish areas of the city.

02:33Tom, this is not only sending shockwaves right through Sydney,

02:37right through Australia,

02:38but there'd be another reason why this massacre has taken place on Bondi Beach.

02:42It is perhaps the most famous stretch of sand anywhere in the world.

02:45Yeah, it's iconic.

02:47And if they are talking about that Hanukkah festival

02:52being the main target for these gunmen,

02:55it's also an incredibly important place for Jewish people to congregate

02:59who, you know, so many of them, thousands of Jewish people,

03:02live across Bondi and around that area.

03:04And it is iconic.

03:06You can see, I mean, I've seen videos

03:09and I've heard the gunshots ring out as well

03:11from, you know, several hundred metres away.

03:14And you can see people, there's one of those gunmen right now.

03:17You can see...

03:18If we can just go back to one of those videos

03:22where they're going over the bridge

03:23and just listen to those shots being fired out

03:27and the eerie sort of silence that follows.

03:44It's hard to believe that this is Bondi Beach.

03:46It's hard to believe this is Sydney.

03:48It's hard to believe this is Australia.

03:50I myself used to live down there for several years

03:52and I'm getting messages for people checking that I'm OK.

03:56I know several people who are living down there at the moment

03:59and I'm checking if they're OK.

04:02Unfortunately, we do know that not everyone is OK

04:06and it doesn't look like that everyone will get out of this safely.

04:11It is an incredibly horrific scene, as Rex has showed us as well,

04:15with several people being worked on, having their lives,

04:17trying to be saved by several paramedics on site.

04:21But some of those people might not be so lucky.

04:25And to just stroll into Bondi, at least two gunmen with a huge gun,

04:30lots of ammunition.

04:31You saw around their belts as well just how much ammunition they had.

04:34They clearly had a motivation in mind going to that,

04:40what we think is a Hanukkah festival.

04:42All of that ammunition you could see littered around them

04:45with backpacks and those ammunition belts as well.

04:47They came into this with a clearly pre-organised and pre-determined goal.

04:54And that looks like one of the RSLs or restaurants down at North Bondi,

04:59people taking cover.

05:00Obviously, just an incredibly shocking situation.

05:05Yeah, look at that sheer panic.

05:06And very sadly, the reports are just getting worse by the minutes.

05:10We are now hearing unconfirmed, but there have been multiple deaths,

05:14multiple people with critical injuries,

05:17and paramedics and emergency services are trying to save lives as we speak.

05:22But a number of lives have been lost, unconfirmed that number.

05:27But the reports coming in from Bondi Beach are getting worse.
