00:00Decades, actress June Brown was a familiar, well, an infamous face, wasn't she?
00:05All in our living rooms.
00:07When June passed away earlier this year, the cast and crew of EastEnders knew that saying goodbye to her character Dot was going to be just as hard.
00:13Sharon Marshall has been allowed behind the scenes as the soap prepares to say goodbye to an Albert Square icon.
00:21After 35 years in the show, the iconic Dot Cotton has been laid to rest in EastEnders.
00:28And we are honoured to be here behind the scenes for the filming of a special tribute episode.
00:34To bid a fond farewell, both to our Dot and to the legendary June Brown, who betrayed her.
00:43She was at the centre of some of the most memorable moments in British TV.
00:49From her relationship with her son, Nasty Nick.
00:52Oh, I'm sorry, I don't know, did you?
00:54To the BAFTA-nominated performance in her solo episode.
00:58I buried my husband.
01:01I made my end son.
01:03June was trusted with some of the soap's heaviest storylines.
01:06Your son, Nick?
01:08He was my Dot.
01:11And today, while older new cast members gather to film Dot's send-off,
01:16I've been lucky enough to share some of their favourite memories.
01:19What's your favourite Dot memory?
01:22I think, for me, it was the one-hander.
01:24I mean, not many people can talk for 30 minutes and completely capture the nation.
01:31But only June could do it, and in the way that she did.
01:35And it was a masterpiece.
01:36For any actor watching, an absolute masterpiece.
01:39I think, for me, it's got to be the Dot and Nethil.
01:43Yeah.
01:43When Nethil was dying and Dot was by her bedside.
01:46It was just so touching.
01:47An amazing episode.
01:49And just the two of them together doing the two-hander.
01:51Two wonderful actresses, icons.
01:54Yeah.
01:54You know, and it was amazing to watch.
01:57You know, you can look and learn.
01:59That's how to do it, yeah.
02:00That's it.
02:01We do use that term an awful lot,
02:03but Dot Cotton, June Brown, both absolute icons.
02:07A true icon.
02:08True icon.
02:08Are you going to be able to get through the film today?
02:12Is it going to feel emotional?
02:13It's going to be tough, actually.
02:15Yeah, isn't it tough?
02:16But it was her comic genius that left a lasting impression on her former cast members.
02:22She gets the umbrella, she puts the little scarf on her.
02:26She comes back, shakes the scarf off, goes,
02:28Hairful.
02:31And there's Gretchen, slumped in the chair,
02:33going, Hairful.
02:34Who is this?
02:35Oh, Hairful.
02:36And just goes.
02:37Can you get that big roll?
02:38Woo!
02:39And it was brilliant comedy,
02:42but the paper, suddenly she thought her friend had died.
02:47Um, that, that two-hander.
02:51Wonderful.
02:52Yeah.
02:52Wonderful.
02:52Wonderful.
02:52The horses are so beautifully groomed.
02:58Everything is perfect and immaculate.
03:01They just want everything to be right today.
03:03Well, it feels like an absolute honour to be here.
03:08And, yeah, it feels very emotionally raw.
03:11Um, but I, yeah, so I feel honoured.
03:14And she was such a great actress.
03:17She was also really, really generous as a woman and as an actor as well.
03:20I was a very young actress, not been long out of care and was really, well, I was cast in
03:27the role because I was vulnerable as a young woman myself.
03:30And so she really took care of me.
03:33She really nurtured me and just gave me my life.
03:37And we were, yeah, friends for 37 years.
03:41It is obvious that all the cast are determined to make Dot proud, but today it's also about
03:47paying their respects to their beloved friend, June Brown.
03:51I can't think of the character of Dot Cotton without thinking of June because they were so
03:57close together.
03:59If you fall in love with Dot, you fall in love with June.
04:01If you fall in love with June, you fall in love with Dot.
04:03But she was very particular about the people she had in her private life.
04:07And I feel very honoured that I was one of those chosen people.
04:11June was such a character, such a huge part of EastEnders and such amazing friends with
04:15a lot of the cast.
04:16And, you know, she was a huge character, cheeky, like she was always there for a story,
04:21always there at the end of, you know, like a day with just smiling constantly.
04:25So for us to say goodbye to her is a really emotional day.
04:30And yeah, she was amazing.

04:34When I read the episode first, there was a lot of tears.
04:37And obviously we have not lost June long ago.
04:41So you felt that pain of losing a friend.
04:44And now it is really lovely to have the Albert Square send-off.
04:49It has been pretty emotional for lots of people.
04:51And there's lots of old faces coming back.
04:53And everyone that was dear to June is here, which is, you know, lovely.
04:57I mean, it is very, very mixed between life and art, if I'm honest.
05:00It's quite emotional.
05:01So farewell then, Duck Cotton, a true TV icon.
05:09And we will probably never see her, like, again.
05:13So thank you for all the glorious memories.
05:17Thank you, Sharon.
05:20Absolute legend, June Brown.
