00:00Only one person can tell us who killed Cassandra Brand.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at the most memorable characters from the first three Knives Out movies.
00:11It's impossible to talk about any of these characters without getting into spoilers, so watch out.
00:16But the truth is, it started with a lie.
00:23Number 10. Harlan Thrombey, Knives Out.
00:26You gave me a hundred milligrams of the good stuff.
00:30Excuse me, but what is the good stuff's dosage supposed to be?
00:35Let's not call it that right now, okay? Three milligrams.
00:39No, that's much less.
00:40One might assume that this best-selling author wasn't the most likable person, as is often the case with murder mystery victims.
00:47Harlan Thrombey is as witty as he is charming, though, which is why you hire an actor like Christopher Plummer.
00:52Where most of his family members are just waiting for the wealthy old man to croak, nurse Marta Cabrera treats Harlan with genuine care.
01:00This is an interesting and efficient method of murder. I need to write this down.
01:05So, if someone switched the meds on purpose, I'd be dead in 10 minutes. Like stone-cold dead?
01:13Yes, your full symptoms in five, sweats, disorientation, and then, yes, that big dose injected within 10, your brain.
01:22To Harlan, she's his best friend in the house. When it appears Marta has made a fatal mistake, Harlan makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect her.
01:30While we don't know him long, his final act not only demonstrates how old age has humbled Harlan, but also his knack for storytelling, going out like a character in one of his books.
01:40This is crazy. I don't think I can do that.
01:42We need to make this so airtight that the average cop will entirely dismiss you as a suspect. It sounds crazy, but it'll work.
01:51Number 9. Birdie J. Glass Onion
01:54The suspects in the Knives Out pictures are often ultra-rich and privileged, earning eye rolls from the audience.
02:10This model-turned-fashion designer is on a whole other level.
02:13Not only does she ignorantly tweet whatever unfiltered thought she has into existence, but Birdie J. throws a crowded party during COVID, without masks.
02:22That's not to say she doesn't own a mask, although it's not very practical.
02:26Despite her ill-conceived Beyonce costume and oblivious use of sweatshops, we'd be lying if we said that Birdie wasn't a hoot.
02:34Andy! Hi!
02:37Wow. How long has it been?
02:41Since the trial, so a few months.
02:43The trial. That was not fun.
02:46With Kate Hudson bringing her signature bubbly persona to the role, she's always the most fun person in the room.
02:52She's also naturally the most fashionable.
02:55She's not a killer, but she is dressed to kill.
02:58She famously wore what became known as the Wren Diamond, and that's a family heirloom, I believe.
03:05To be clear, I mean, I didn't know what a blood diamond was.
03:10Number 8. Monsignor Jefferson Wicks
03:12Wake Up Dead Man
03:13You bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It's been six weeks since my last confession.
03:21The head of a small congregation, Jefferson Wicks might not have the farthest reach,
03:26but he'll abuse what little power he does hold with a devilish grin.
03:30Where some men of God seek unity, Wicks goes out of his way to divide people.
03:35Wicks, nonetheless, gains a faithful flock, who would follow him to the gates of hell, excusing whatever sins he commits along the way.
03:42Yes, he will rise. Yes, tremble in fear.
03:46For he will rise again in glory and vengeance and power.
03:52Their loyalty isn't rewarded, making Wicks a target.
03:56Of all the victims in the Knives Out movies, Wicks is the one we empathize with the least.
04:00Josh Brolin understands the assignment, creating an antagonist we love to hate, while also bringing some twisted humor to the role.
04:08He's a false prophet, but charismatic leaders like Wicks do exist.
04:13On Easter Sunday, when the pews fill with townspeople, I will lay bare the sins of this flock, cut you loose, and shake the dust of this place off of my sandals.
04:23Number 7. Miles Braun, Glass Onion
04:26Serenading me with my song.
04:29On the guitar Paul wrote it on.
04:32I know, legit, right?
04:34But look at your face, it was worth it.
04:36Oh, my friends, my friends.
04:38A glass onion doesn't sound appetizing, but Miles Braun feeds into our desire to eat the rich.
04:45If you put Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk in a blender, you'd get Edward Norton's egotistical tech bro, who views himself as untouchable.
04:54Miles is also under the misconception that he's the smartest person on his estate, which Benoit Blanc quickly disproves.
05:00Yeah, why not? As Watson said to Holmes...
05:03It was Bertie, who planted a remote device on a crossbow in revenge for you stealing her signature red diamond.
05:11Miles still crafts a scheme that even takes Blanc a minute to unravel.
05:15Despite this, it appears Miles won't pay for his crimes.
05:18Ironically, Miles is destroyed by the very thing that made him a billionaire, capitalism.
05:23It's what permitted him to rent the Mona Lisa.
05:25Once that priceless painting goes up in flames on his watch, so does Miles' wealth, freedom, and onion.
05:33Number 6. Reverend Judd Duplentesy, Wake Up Dead Man.
05:41You start fighting wolves, and before you know it, everyone you don't understand is a wolf.
05:47I still got that fighting instinct, and I gave into it today, but Christ came to heal the world, not fight it.
05:52In each Knives Out movie, there's someone who works closely with Benoit Blanc, essentially serving as a second protagonist.
05:59In Wake Up Dead Man, it's Josh O'Connor's Reverend Judd Duplentesy.
06:03This doesn't rule Duplentesy out as a suspect, however.
06:06In many respects, Duplentesy is the opposite of Monsignor Wicks, one seeking redemption for his sins, while the other couldn't care less.
06:14Both men have a fire inside them, though, which just might have caused Duplentesy to commit the deadliest of sins.
06:20Last night, that same sin rose in me, and in a moment of fear and rage, I...
06:29I'm sorry, that was dramatic, but I needed you to stop talking.
06:36While Duplentesy doubts even himself sometimes, he understands how religion should function in society, not to manipulate or benefit the elite, but to provide comfort during difficult times.
06:47Duplentesy emerges as a vessel for good, even if that occasionally requires him to throw a punch.
06:53Number 5. Hugh Ransom Drysdale. Knives Out.
07:08Call me Ransom, it's my middle name. Only the help called me Hugh.
07:12Okay. Uh, this is Trooper Wagner. I'm Lieutenant Elliot. Just want to ask a few questions.
07:18Although Knives Out seemingly gives away its biggest twist early on, the film still keeps us guessing.
07:26This is largely thanks to the wild card that is Ransom Drysdale.
07:29Despite being a jerky rich boy and the black sheep of his family, the audience begins to wonder if there's more to Ransom as he reaches out to Marta.
07:38Chris Evans is the ideal choice for this two-faced part.
07:41While we've seen him play honest Boy Scouts before, he also knows how to eat up a villain role.
07:46Ransom turns out to be the latter.
07:48Yeah, I killed Fran, but I guess I didn't. So what do you have on me? Nothing. What, attempted murder?
07:54I get arson for the building and a few other charges with a good lawyer, which I have. I'll be out in no time.
08:00Not only was Ransom deceiving Marta, but he orchestrated his grandfather's death in addition to murdering someone else.
08:07His kill count would have been three if he had grabbed a sharper knife.
08:18In most Knives Out movies, we feel satisfied when the killer gets their comeuppance.
08:45As Martha makes her confession, though, we can't help but experience sorrow.
08:50This isn't to say that Martha was an angel, despite dedicating her life to the church.
08:54She made an ungodly decision during her youth, which has come back to haunt her and others years later.
09:00Martha's attempt to conceal the truth only leads to more blood, forcing her to reconcile with the sins she's committed.
09:06I could accept that he had strayed. But as he spoke, something became clear. This was something much bigger. He was embracing that terrible boy.
09:22During her final moments, Martha not only seeks forgiveness for what she's done, but also offers closure to those who've been harmed.
09:29Glenn Close is an absolute powerhouse as a devout woman who sees the light after spending years hiding in the darkness.
09:37Martha, you're really good at this.
09:45Number 3. Helen Brand, Glass Onion.
09:48My name is Helen Brand, and I came all the way here from Alabama.
09:52Well, what do you do in Alabama?
09:57I teach. Third grade. So a lot of zooming.
10:00Janelle Monae pulls double duties as Helen Brand and her identical twin sister, Andy.
10:05Of course, for the first half of Glass Onion, we're not even aware that Andy has a twin.
10:10In fact, the woman we've been led to believe is Andy was actually Helen,
10:14who has been impersonating her deceased sister to find her killer.
10:17No, he got his from me. All of it. My life was taken away from me by someone, by everyone in this room.
10:28My life. Do you even know what that means? Huh?
10:32Monae's performance is especially impressive considering how different the sisters were.
10:36Where Andy sought fame and fortune beyond Alabama, Helen is happy living a modest life.
10:42She may not be rich, but Helen has a strong head on her shoulders and a moral compass that never wavers.
10:48She serves as a reminder of how easily the Glass Onion can crack, if someone is righteous enough to smash it.
10:54No. The bar closed nine years ago, and hers has one thing that George just doesn't.
11:06Number 2. Marta Cabrera, Knives Out.
11:09Knives Out has such a stacked ensemble that most people overlooked Ana de Armas when the cast was announced.
11:19While de Armas wasn't an unknown, she wasn't a household name.
11:23By the end of the film, audiences not only knew de Armas' name, but Marta owned the house that once employed her.
11:29This is still our house!
11:37Hmm?
11:39Oh, sorry.
11:40Likewise, the house at 2 Dearborn Drive and all belongings therein, I leave to Marta Cabrera.
11:47In a way, Marta's character arc mirrored de Armas' ascension to fame.
11:51Marta is introduced as a meek figure whom nobody pays attention to.
11:55That is, until her name comes up during a will reading.
11:58Suddenly, all eyes are on Marta with a target on her back.
12:02Marta made de Armas a star, while de Armas made Marta an endearing heroine who we want to see come out on top.
12:07Which she does.
12:09Miss Cabrera has decided, definitively, not to renounce the inheritance.
12:14What?
12:15What?
12:15Furthermore, it will be my professional recommendation to the local authorities
12:19that the manor of death in the case of Harlan Thrombey is ruled as suicide.
12:24Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
12:34Linda Drysdale, Knives Out.
12:36Cool and collected until you cut her out of the will.
12:39No, no, no, no, what were you?
12:40What were you doing?
12:41Were you boinking my father?
12:43Boinking?
12:44Claire DiBella, Glass Onion.
12:46A hot mess, but still more sympathetic than most politicians.
12:50Subject to their approval.
12:51Uh, hold on.
12:53Hey.
12:53Oh, shit, sorry.
12:54Let me, uh...
12:55Sign here.
12:58Can you grab the thing?
12:59Yeah.
13:00Oh, my God.
13:00It's heavy.
13:00Have a good one.
13:02Vera Draven, Wake Up Dead Man.
13:04A lawyer who places her faith in a devil in disguise.
13:08So I think that when my dad is looking down on me from heaven,
13:13I think he is very pleased with me.
13:19Whiskey, Glass Onion.
13:21She deserved better than Duke, anyway.
13:23My dear, would you do me a favor?
13:26Would you come sit over here?
13:28Just so I can take care of Mr. Cody.
13:30Yes, that's right.
13:31Mr. Braun, would you call your boat and have him come a-me-do?
13:36Oh, my God.
13:37Peg, Glass Onion.
13:39Bertie's long-suffering comedic foil.
13:42Miss J, I am writing to inform you that the proposed Bangladesh factory
13:45is notoriously one of the world's biggest sweatshops, please advise.
13:51And then you replied,
13:53sounds perfect, thanks.
13:56With your memoji dabbing.

14:15Number 1. Benoit Blanc, Knives Out Franchise.
14:18I'm here at the behest of a client.
14:22Who?
14:25I cannot say.
14:27But let me assure you this.
14:29My presence will be ornamental.
14:32You will find me a respectful, quiet, passive observer of the truth.
14:40When somebody plays James Bond, it's usually the peak of their career.
14:44In Benoit Blanc, however, Daniel Craig and Rian Johnson have created a new screen icon
14:49who could rank alongside Bond or Sherlock Holmes as one of the most memorable characters in any medium.
14:55Where a revolving door of actors have portrayed James and Sherlock,
14:59we can't imagine anyone other than Craig playing the Southern sleuth.
15:03Very good. Very good.
15:07Craig took a huge swing with Blanc's thick accent,
15:10which mixes the theatrics of Tennessee Williams and Shelby Foote.
15:13Yet it 100% works in a performance we can't get enough of,
15:18despite still not knowing much about Blanc's past or personal life.
15:21It's only appropriate that a master detective would be something of a mystery himself.
15:26No longer a fallible man, but now a symbol of the Lord's power over death.
15:34It's justice for the holy.
15:36It's vengeance for the wicked.
15:38Who's your favorite Knives Out character?
15:40Leave us a clue in the comments.
15:43Amen.
15:44Amen.
15:46We try to believe in each other in his system.
