00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon, good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio, a place of intense competition, but perhaps not as great a competition as something that's happening down in Barnes, in a pub in Barnes, South London.
00:44The great sausage roll-off is taking place tonight, Rachel. You're not going to believe this.
00:52Live cooking event where 20 professional chefs are cooking up, conjuring up out of ingredients that none of us could even guess at sausage rolls.
01:02And it's judged by a panel of Michelin-star chefs. Now, I want to talk to you because I know that you don't eat meat. You're not a meat eater.
01:11But have you ever had a go at a vegan sausage roll?
01:15No. They do make them. You'd be surprised. I can't think of anything, really, that you can't get in a vegan version now.
01:22And some of the meat substitutes you wouldn't even know weren't meat. But I'm terrible at baking. I'll leave it to the professionals. Leave it to Jay.
01:29Brilliant stuff. Now, who have we got with us? Rachel, we've got Adam Davidson back with us, executive search consultant from Merge.
01:36Gillian, great win yesterday, Adam.
01:38Thanks very much.
01:38Fantastic. Well done. 98 points on your first show. So, well done. Good luck today.
01:44Thank you. Thanks.
01:44Good luck today. You're joined by Alwyn Evans, a retired local government official from London.
01:50But the thing I love about Alwyn is that she's a singer. She's Welsh by heritage, by family.
01:58And you've been singing in a choir at Buckingham Palace. And you've travelled off down to Patagonia, to the Welsh community.
02:04Tell us a little bit about this extraordinary community.
02:07In 2015, the Welsh community in Patagonia celebrated 150 years of the settlement of the first ship going over to settle the colony.
02:18And they had great celebrations and invited many people over from Wales to help celebrate.
02:25And we had a great time.
02:27And the Welsh chapels are there?
02:28Yes, many of them. And it was very touching to be in there singing hymns with them and taking part in the services.
02:35That must have been a very extraordinary experience for you.
02:37It had been a lifetime's ambition for me and realised, so I was very glad.
02:41I bet they looked after you too.
02:43Yes, yes, very much. Plenty of Welsh cakes.
02:46I bet. All right, thank you for that. Big round of applause now for Alwyn and Adam.
02:55And Susie's over the corner with one of our great regular guests, none other than Jay Rayner, of course, food critic, journalist, author and jazz pianist.
03:05I hear you were playing the piano in the hotel here last night.
03:08Well, you've got to do something to keep people's spirits up.
03:11They let me. That was what was kind. They let me sit down and play at the piano.
03:14Excellent. I hear you were brilliant.
03:16Oh, I have a stomach.
03:18Anyway.
03:18Delighted to be back.
03:20Moving on. Adam, take us away, will you?
03:22Good afternoon, Rachel.

04:47Well, the kind of thing that Adam would probably have,
04:50which is client.
04:52A client.
04:52Yeah.
04:54And we also have a four, six, albeit.
04:57Good word.
04:58It is a good word.
04:59Albeit, yeah.
04:59It always sounds to me like three words.
05:01I know.
05:02It was three words and then they all came together.
05:04That's nice.
05:05Thanks very much, Susie.
05:06Six points to Olwen.
05:07And it's Olwen's letters game.

06:20And profane.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Profane from Adam.
06:24Both in, both very good.
06:25Anything to add, Jay?
06:28That's pretty much what we've got as well.
06:30We've got banter, which this show would be nothing without.
06:34Indeed.
06:35Banter, banter.
06:36Susie?
06:37No, we had it otherwise.
06:39Pronate and profane.
06:40Profane from the Latin, for outside the temple, because it's something that's not sacred.
06:45Thank you for that.
06:4713 points to seven, Adam, on seven.
06:50It's Adam's numbers game.
06:52Off we go.
06:53Can I have two large and four small, please?
06:55You can indeed.

08:10Oh, excuse me.
08:11Hello.
08:12Can I cry?
08:13I think so.
08:14So you get to the 800.
08:1725 minus 9 is 16.
08:20Minus 3.
08:21Yep, that gives you the 13 for 8-1-3.
08:23Well done, Jay.

08:47Welcome back.
09:03I left with the clue.

12:32And the other is couples.
12:35That's it, Susie?

14:20other 10 minus the 2 is 8 to take away for 832 perfect well done thanks
14:26spot on as ever so 34 to 21 Adam on 21 as we turn to Jay and Jay I've got a little book here
14:38little book packs a big punch doesn't and I think it's all about the art of complaining
14:44and reviews talk to us about the art of complaining there's lots of reason for complaining it's a
14:49collection of 20 of my most negative restaurant reviews I had a horrible time and I thought
14:54I'd share it with people because you know mostly because people like reading negative restaurant
15:00reviews but the thing is the thing I've discovered being a restaurant critic as long as I have which
15:04is uh nearly 20 years um people go out and have a terrible time but they're very bad at complaining
15:10about it they're fine at complaining about it to their friends and relations they're terrible
15:14at complaining about it to the restaurant the key thing if you're going to complain if something's
15:19wrong you're paid you're paying money for a restaurant experience don't just sit there and stew about it
15:24complain early and complain often and do it as soon as the problem has happened because then they can
15:30do something about it one of the conversations I have with restaurateurs all the time is they say
15:34if we're not told there's a problem there's nothing we can do about it but people feel very
15:38uncomfortable complaining so often what they do is they go and have a terrible time and only send
15:43an email the next day and then copy me in as though I can do something about it very difficult
15:49well I must tell you I've had a good old look through this wasted calories and ruined nights
15:54yeah and there's some crackers in it going back a while so some of the fresh months will say oh no
16:00he's published another book I know I know I mean but it has to be said I don't sort of pick on the
16:05little guys generally if I really write a stinker of a review it's one of those grand restaurants
16:10that's charging enormous amounts of money and loves itself it finishes on one of the grand Michelin
16:16three-star gastro palaces in Paris yeah that I am I went there so that you wouldn't have to Nick
16:22I did that selflessly brilliant and it was awful well it's it this is a great read it's a great read
16:29it's a cautionary tale for any restaurant isn't actually trying their best exactly they don't want
16:33one of your brutish no they don't your bad ones all right thanks Jay lovely
16:3834 plays 21 all and on 34 Adam now then off we go can I have a consonant please thank you Adam
16:51m and a vowel a and a consonant s and a vowel e and a consonant v and another consonant ah a third consonant please n a vowel

20:05So for seven, what you'd get if your internet connection wasn't working very well, it's laggier.
20:10Oh, right.
20:11So it lags.
20:12But for eight, to stop you bleeding all over the place, you'd turn a ligature.
20:17Indeed.
20:18Oh, good word.
20:19It's a very good word.
20:19Ligature.
20:20All right.

21:38So still a point in it.
21:40Adam has clambered back into the lead.
21:4245 to Alwyn's 44.
21:44So we turn to our second Tea Time teaser, which has got chirpy.
21:48And the clue, you can't just go and publish another person's work if it's protected by this.
21:54You can't just go and publish another person's work if it's protected by this.
22:03Welcome back.
22:15I lift with the clue.

25:15Seven, not written down.
25:17And your seven, Alwyn?
25:18Wildest.
25:19Wildest, Adam?
25:20Dowliest.
25:22Dowliest.
25:23Dowliest.
25:24I'm not sure, Adam, that's going to be in.
25:27No, just lowliest or dowdiest, I'm afraid, sorry.
25:33And Jay?
25:34A couple of sixes for you.
25:36Wilted.
25:36Yep.
25:37And soiled.
25:39It's all very attractive, isn't it?
25:40They'll do.
25:41Anybody else, Susie?
25:43No, with wildest for seven.
25:44All right.
25:45Yeah.
25:46Alwyn back in the lead.
25:48Look at this, 58-52, well done.
25:50And it's Susie.
25:52Give them a rest, Susie.
25:54Whilst we listen to your wonderful origins of words, what have you for us today?
25:57I have a question from Hilary Franklin from Norwich.
26:01He says, the term gaslighting seemed recently to have entered common usage.
26:05Is it a new word and where has it come from?
26:08And it has, indeed, been kind of propelled back into our vocabulary in recent times.
26:13I say back because I'll explain where it comes from in a minute.
26:16But it does seem odd because you would think more about Victorian London, really, when you think about gaslighting.
26:21But it's actually a psychological term, and that's where it's relevant today.
26:25And it describes the manipulation of somebody's mind so that the victim actually thinks that they're going insane.
26:32That's really what it means.
26:34So they begin to question their own sanity.
26:36It's that kind of psychological manipulation, as I say, or exploitation.
26:41It's been debated particularly in the political sphere.
26:44So critics of Donald Trump suggest that the president wants the nation to reject their direct experience of reality because it's all fake news.
26:53And there's been a lot of comparisons between George Orwell's 1984 and Trump's words.
26:57For example, Trump has said, just remember what you're seeing and what you're reading is not happening.
27:02So, again, you kind of begin to doubt your own grasp on reality.
27:08But where it comes from, I know this very well because it was one of my grandmother's absolute favourite movies.
27:12And it's one by George Cooke, who directed it, called Gaslight.
27:16And it involves Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer.
27:19And essentially, it's a young woman who witnesses the murder of her aunt.
27:25So it's very shocking.
27:26She moves away and meets someone she completely falls in love with.
27:31And they eventually move back to her aunt's house.
27:34And then things start to happen.
27:36So she hears knocking on the walls at night.
27:38She hears footsteps.
27:40She hears all sorts of voices that she can't quite to the place.
27:44And her husband just says, you know, don't worry, it's the atmosphere of the house.
27:48But slowly but surely, he begins to say, you're becoming a bit unstable and it's all in your imagination.
27:53And it's called gaslighting because he dims the lights deliberately at kind of strange times.
27:58So she sort of sees the lights flickering.
27:59And again, he tells her that it's all in her imagination.
28:02I won't tell you the end of the film because it's a really, really good film.
28:05But that's where gaslighting comes from.
28:07The sort of manipulation, as I say, of somebody's imagination to the point that they actually have no idea what's real and what's not.
28:14Amazing.
28:15Amazing.
28:1958 plays 52.
28:20Alwyn on 58.
28:22Alwyn, your letters game now.
