00:00Now the global gaming industry is now estimated to be worth about 29 and a half billion dollars.
00:07That's more than double what it was worth just eight years ago when it was valued at less than 14 billion dollars.
00:16Now Director for Southeast and East Asia Research at Niko Partners is Durang Chandra and he joins us from Jakarta.
00:24Durang, thanks so much for your time.
00:26And first of all, we know that even President Macron is a fan of Expedition 33.
00:32What do you think gave it the edge, especially from such a small company?
00:36I mean, it's a small company, but like a lot of very like highly expert expert people working on it and like project.
00:44Right. So even like having like a French media product garnering like this kind of success will definitely make like President Macron super happy.
00:50And Sally, like the development team did a really great job in building an excellent narrative and combining that with memorable characters, strong gameplay and great artistic direction.
01:00So I think those are like the main like building blocks of like this game success, even like getting like nine awards right today.
01:07Wow. The TGA event also saw the release of the latest trailer and the date for the Chinese game Absolute Phantom Zero.
01:17That's coming out in September next year.
01:19That is generating a lot of interest in this this Wuxia theme, which is sort of Chinese heroics.
01:26We've seen Black Miss Wukong, Where Wins Meet, lots of interest.
01:31Talk to us about what's going on in the Chinese gaming industry.
01:35So you mentioned like Phantom is like one of the most highly anticipated games from China for next year.
01:40Well, even like globally, alongside GTA 6, of course, like everyone wants to play GTA 6, but Chinese games in general, they are already dominant in the mobile and F2P space.
01:50Like they're like the biggest, they have like one of the highest revenue in the world for like, especially for mobile and like even PC for F2P.
01:58Black Miss Wukong itself, it opened the gates on how Chinese games developers are looking to succeed also in the premium and triple A game space.
02:07Apart from Wukong, we have seen like several other games, such as like Naraka Blade Point, for example, that have been successfully introduced to gamers in the West.
02:15And it introduced like gamers in the West to like Chinese history, mythology, martial arts, traditional culture, music, all of like the soft power stuff.
02:23So even Wukong was nominated for the Game of the Year Award this year.
02:27I'm sorry, last year.
02:28And it was like a very huge achievement for a premium game from China.
02:31It was like the first time a premium game from China was nominated for that, right?
02:36We have seen the gaming industry more than double in value in less than eight years.
02:42It's now worth some $30 billion.
02:44What do you attribute this huge growth to?
02:48I mean, it can be attributed to like a lot of stuff, especially with the high community growth.
02:55Games is like something that everyone can do like from everywhere compared to like for like movies or music.
03:02You need to like, you need to like to be there and then have like specific activities that you can't do anything else.
03:09But then for games, it's like very mobile.
03:11You can play on mobile, you can play on PC, you can play on console.
03:14It doesn't have to be just like you standing in a room, like staying in a room and playing it.
03:18It's like very flexible and it's also like a very like general, like people from all different ages can play games.
03:27It's not just for kids.
03:28It's for like everyone from different ages.
03:30And there's also like so many medium that can be added into games.
03:35So music, like even like cut scene, like movie style games, everything can be added into games.
03:41And it's also very like easy to adapt compared to other kinds of entertainment.
03:46Well, thank you so much for your insight today.
03:50That is Durang Chandra, Director for Southeast and East Asia Research at Nico Partners.
