00:00:00The Prince unlocked the door, and they all went down the stairs.
00:00:11Three of them withdrawn swords, and Jill withdrawn knife.
00:00:17The attendants had vanished, and the great room at the foot of the Prince's stairs was empty.
00:00:24The grey, doleful lamps were still burning,
00:00:26and by their light they had no difficulty in passing gallery after gallery and descending stairway after stairway.
00:00:34The noises from outside the castle were not so easily heard here as they had been in the room above.
00:00:41Inside the house all was still as death, and deserted.
00:00:45It was as they turned a corner into the great hall on the ground floor that they met their first earthman.
00:00:50A fat, whitish creature, with a very pig-like face who was gobbling up all the remains of food on the tables.
00:00:59It squealed, the squeal also was very like a pig's, and darted under a bench,
00:01:04whisking its long tail out of Puddleglum's reach in the nick of time.
00:01:08Then it rushed away through the far door too quickly to be followed.
00:01:11From the hall they came out into the courtyard.
00:01:16Jill, who went to a riding school in the holidays, had just noticed the smell of a stable.
00:01:20A very nice, honest, homely smell it is to meet in a place like Underland,
00:01:25when Eustace said,
00:01:26Great Scott, look at that!
00:01:29A magnificent rocket had risen from somewhere beyond the castle walls and broken into green stars.
00:01:38Fireworks, said Jill in a puzzled voice.
00:01:40Yes, said Eustace, but you can't imagine those earth people letting them off for fun.
00:01:46It must be a signal.
00:01:48It means no good to us, I'll be bound, said Puddleglum.
00:01:53Friends, said the prince,
00:01:55when once a man is launched on such an adventure as this,
00:01:58he must bid farewell to hopes and fears,
00:02:01otherwise death or deliverance will both come too late to save his honour and his reason.
00:02:06Oh, my beauties!
00:02:09He was now opening the stable door.
00:02:11Hey, cousin, steady, coal black.
00:02:14Softly now, snowflake.
00:02:15You are not forgotten.
00:02:18The horses were both frightened by the strange lights and the noises.
00:02:23Jill, who had been so cowardly about going through a black hole between one cave and another,
00:02:28went in without fear between the stamping and snorting beasts,
00:02:31and she and the prince had them saddled and bridled in a few minutes.
00:02:36Very fine, they looked as they came out into the courtyard, tossing their heads.
00:02:41Jill mounted snowflake, and Puddleglum got up behind her.
00:02:45Eustace got up behind the prince on coal black.
00:02:48Then, with a great echo of hooves, they rode out of the main gateway into the street.
00:02:53Not much danger of being burnt, that's the bright side of it,
00:02:58observed Puddleglum, pointing to their right.
00:03:01There, hardly a hundred yards away, lapping against the walls of the houses, was water.
00:03:07Courage, said the prince, the road there goes down steeply.
00:03:11That water has climbed only half up the greatest hill in the city.
00:03:15It might come so near in the first half-hour and come no nearer in the next two.
00:03:19My fear is more of that.
00:03:21And he pointed with his sword to a great tall earthman, with boar's tusks,
00:03:26followed by six others of assorted shapes and sizes,
00:03:29who had just dashed out of a side street and stepped into the shadow of the houses,
00:03:33where no one could see them.
00:03:35The prince led them, aiming always in the direction of the glowing red light,
00:03:39but a little to the left of it.
00:03:42His plan was to get round the fire, if it was a fire, onto high ground,
00:03:47in hope that they might find their way to the new diggings.
00:03:51Unlike the other three, he seemed to be almost enjoying himself.
00:03:56He whistled as he rode, and sang snatches of an old song about Corrin Thunderfist of Arkenland.
00:04:04The truth is, he was so glad at being free from his long enchantment,
00:04:08that all dangers seemed a game in comparison.
00:04:11But the rest found it an eerie journey.
00:04:16Behind them was the sound of clashing and entangled ships,
00:04:19and the rumble of collapsing buildings.
00:04:23Overhead was the great patch of lurid light on the roof of the underworld.
00:04:27Ahead was the mysterious glow, which did not seem to grow any bigger.
00:04:31From the same direction came a continual hubbub of shouts, screams, catcalls, laughter,
00:04:40squeals and bellowings, and fireworks of all sorts rose in the dark air.
00:04:47No one could guess what they meant.
00:04:51Nearer to them, the city was partly lit up by the red glow,
00:04:54and partly by the very different light of the dreary gnome lamps.
00:04:57But there were many places where neither of these lights fell,
00:05:02and those places were jet black.
00:05:04And, in and out of those places,
00:05:07the shapes of earthmen were darting and slipping all the time,
00:05:10always with their eyes fixed on the travellers,
00:05:13always trying to keep out of sight themselves.
00:05:17There were big faces and little faces,
00:05:20huge eyes like fish's eyes and little eyes like bear's.
00:05:24There were feathers and bristles, horns and tusks,
00:05:28noses like whipcord,
00:05:30and chins so long they looked like beards.
00:05:34Every now and then a group of them would get too big or come too near,
00:05:38then the prince would brandish his sword and make a show of charging them.
00:05:43And the creatures, with all manner of hootings, squeakings and cluckings,
00:05:47would dive away into the darkness.
00:05:48But when they had climbed many steep streets and were far away from the flood,
00:05:54and almost out of the town on the inland side,
00:05:57it began to be more serious.
00:05:59They were now close to the red glow,
00:06:01and nearly on a level with it,
00:06:03though they still could not see what it really was.
00:06:06But by its light,
00:06:08they could see their enemies more clearly.
00:06:10Hundreds,
00:06:11perhaps a few thousands of gnomes were all moving towards it.
00:06:14But they were doing so in short rushes,
00:06:17and whenever they stopped,
00:06:19they turned and faced the travellers.
00:06:22"'If your highness asked me,' said Puddleglum,
00:06:25"'I'd say those fellows were meaning to cut us off in front.'
00:06:29"'That was my thought too, Puddleglum,' said the prince,
00:06:32"'and we can never fight our way through so many.
00:06:35"'Hark you!
00:06:37Let us ride forth close by the edge of yonder house,
00:06:40and even as we reach it,
00:06:41do you slip off into its shadow.
00:06:43The lady and I will go forward a few paces.
00:06:46Some of these devils will follow us, I doubt not.
00:06:49They are thick behind us.
00:06:51Do you, who have long arms,
00:06:53take one alive, if you may,
00:06:54as it passes your ambush?
00:06:56We may get a true tale of it,
00:06:58or learn what is their quarrel against us.'
00:07:01"'But won't the others all come rushing at us
00:07:04to rescue the one we catch?'
00:07:06said Jill,
00:07:07in a voice not so steady as she tried to make it.
00:07:10"'Then, madam,' said the prince,
00:07:11"'you shall see us die fighting around you,
00:07:14and you must commend yourself to the lion.
00:07:17Now, good Puddleglum!'
00:07:19The marsh wiggles slipped off into the shadow
00:07:22as quickly as a cat.
00:07:24The others, for a sickening minute or so,
00:07:27went forward at a walk.
00:07:29Then suddenly from behind them there broke out
00:07:31a series of blood-curdling screams,
00:07:34mixed with the familiar voice of Puddleglum,
00:07:36saying,
00:07:36"'No, then, don't cry out before you're hurt,
00:07:40or you will be hurt, see?
00:07:42Anyone would think it was a pig being killed.'
00:07:45"'That was good hunting,' exclaimed the prince,
00:07:48immediately turning Coalblack
00:07:49and coming back to the corner of the house.
00:07:53"'Eustace,' he said,
00:07:54"'of your courtesy take Coalblack's head.'
00:07:56Then he dismounted,
00:07:58and all three gazed in silence
00:08:00while Puddleglum pulled his catch out into the light.
00:08:04It was a most miserable little gnome,
00:08:07only about three feet long.
00:08:09It had a sort of ridge,
00:08:11like a cock's comb only hard,
00:08:13on the top of its head,
00:08:14little pink eyes,
00:08:15and a mouth and chin so large and round
00:08:18that its face looked like that of a pygmy hippopotamus.
00:08:21If they'd not been in such a tight place,
00:08:24they would have burst into laughter at the sight of it.
00:08:27"'Now, Earthman,' said the prince,
00:08:30standing over it and holding his sword-point
00:08:32very near the prisoner's neck,
00:08:34"'speak up, like an honest gnome,
00:08:36and you shall go free.
00:08:38Play the knave with us,
00:08:39and you are but a dead Earthman.
00:08:42Good Puddleglum,
00:08:43how can it speak while you hold its mouth tight shut?'
00:08:46"'No, and it can't bite either,' said Puddleglum.
00:08:50"'If I had the silly soft hands that you humans have,
00:08:54saving your highness's reverence,
00:08:56I'd have been all over blood by now,
00:08:58yet even a marsh-wiggle gets tired of being chewed.
00:09:02"'Sirror,' said the prince to the gnome,
00:09:04"'one bite and you die.'
00:09:07"'Let its mouth open, Puddleglum.'
00:09:09"'Wee!' squealed the Earthman.
00:09:13"'Let me go! Let me go!
00:09:16"'It isn't me I didn't do it!'
00:09:18"'Didn't do what?' asked Puddleglum.
00:09:21"'Whatever your honours say I did do,'
00:09:23answered the creature.
00:09:25"'Tell me your name,' said the prince,
00:09:27"'and what you Earthmen are all about today.'
00:09:29"'Oh, please, your honours,
00:09:31please, kind gentlemen,' whimpered the gnome.
00:09:33"'Promise you will not tell the Queen's Grace
00:09:36anything I say.'
00:09:37"'The Queen's Grace, as you call her,'
00:09:40said the prince sternly,
00:09:42"'is dead. I killed her myself.'
00:09:44"'What?' cried the gnome,
00:09:47opening its ridiculous mouth
00:09:48wider and wider in astonishment.
00:09:50"'Dead? The witch?
00:09:53Dead? And by your honour's hand?'
00:09:56It gave a huge sigh of relief and added,
00:09:59"'Why, then, your honour is a friend!'
00:10:01The prince withdrew his sword an inch or so.
00:10:05Puddleglum let the creature sit up.
00:10:08It looked round on the four travellers
00:10:09with its twinkling red eyes,
00:10:12chuckled once or twice,
00:10:14and began.
00:10:18Chapter Fourteen
00:10:19The Bottom of the World
00:10:21My name is Gold,
00:10:25said the gnome.
00:10:28That's all I know.
00:10:30About an hour ago
00:10:31we were all going about our work,
00:10:34her work, I should say,
00:10:35sad and silent,
00:10:37same as we've done
00:10:38any other day for years and years.
00:10:42And there came a great crash and bang.
00:10:45As soon as they heard it,
00:10:47everyone says to himself,
00:10:48"'I haven't had a song or a dance
00:10:51or let off a squib for a long time.
00:10:53Why's that?'
00:10:54And everyone thinks to himself,
00:10:55"'Why, I must have been enchanted.'
00:10:58And then everyone says to himself,
00:11:00"'I'm blessed if I know
00:11:01why I'm carrying this load,
00:11:03and I'm not going to carry it any further.
00:11:05That's that.
00:11:06And down we all throw
00:11:08our sacks and bundles and tools.'
00:11:10Then everyone turns
00:11:12and sees the great red glow
00:11:14over yonder.
00:11:16And everyone says to himself,
00:11:17"'What's that?'
00:11:18And everyone answers himself
00:11:20and says,
00:11:21"'There's a crack,
00:11:23or chasm split open,
00:11:25and a nice warm glow
00:11:26coming up through it
00:11:27from the really deep land
00:11:29a thousand fathoms under us.'
00:11:31"'Great Scott!' exclaimed Eustace,
00:11:34"'are there other lands
00:11:35still lower down?'
00:11:36"'Oh, yes, your honour,' said Golg.
00:11:40"'Lovely places,
00:11:41what we call the land of Bism.
00:11:44This country where we are now,
00:11:46the witch's country,
00:11:47is what we call the shallow lands.
00:11:50It's a good deal too near the surface
00:11:53to suit us.
00:11:54You might almost as well be living outside
00:11:57on the surface itself.
00:11:59You see,
00:12:01we're all poor gnomes from Bism,
00:12:03whom the witch has called up here
00:12:05by magic to work for her.
00:12:07But we'd forgotten all about it
00:12:09till that crash came
00:12:10and the spell broke.
00:12:12We didn't know who we were
00:12:13or where we belonged.
00:12:16We couldn't do anything
00:12:17or think anything
00:12:18except what she put into our heads,
00:12:20and it was glam and gloomy things
00:12:23she put there all those years.
00:12:24I've nearly forgotten
00:12:25how to make a joke
00:12:26or dance a jig.
00:12:29But the moment the bang came
00:12:30and the chasm opened
00:12:31and the sea began rising,
00:12:33it all came back.
00:12:35And, of course,
00:12:35we all set off as quick as we could
00:12:37to get down the crack
00:12:38and home to our own place.
00:12:41And you can see them over there
00:12:42all letting off rockets
00:12:43and standing on their heads for joy.
00:12:46And I'll be very obliged,
00:12:47your honours,
00:12:48if you'll soon let me go
00:12:49and join in.
00:12:51I think this is simply splendid,
00:12:53said Jill.
00:12:54I'm so glad we freed the gnomes
00:12:56as well as ourselves
00:12:57when we cut off the witch's head.
00:12:59And I'm so glad
00:13:00they aren't really horrid
00:13:01and gloomy
00:13:02any more than the prince
00:13:03really was,
00:13:04well,
00:13:06what he seemed like.
00:13:08That's all very well,
00:13:09Paul,
00:13:10said Puddleglum cautiously.
00:13:12But those gnomes
00:13:13didn't look to me
00:13:14like chaps
00:13:15who were just running away.
00:13:16They looked more like
00:13:17military formations,
00:13:18if you ask me.
00:13:21Do you look me in the face,
00:13:22Mr. Golg,
00:13:23and tell me you weren't
00:13:24preparing for battle?
00:13:27Of course we were,
00:13:28Your Honour,
00:13:29said Golg.
00:13:30You see,
00:13:31we didn't know
00:13:31the witch was dead.
00:13:33We thought she'd be
00:13:35watching from the castle.
00:13:37We were trying to slip away
00:13:38without being seen.
00:13:40And then,
00:13:41when you four came out
00:13:43with swords and horses,
00:13:45of course everyone says to himself,
00:13:47here it comes,
00:13:49not knowing that his honour
00:13:50wasn't on the witch's side.
00:13:52And we were determined
00:13:53to fight like anything
00:13:54rather than give out
00:13:55the hope of going back
00:13:56to bism.
00:13:58I'll be sworn
00:13:59tis an honest gnome,
00:14:01said the prince.
00:14:02Let go of it,
00:14:03friend Puddleglum.
00:14:05As for me,
00:14:06good Golg,
00:14:06I have been enchanted
00:14:08like you and your fellows,
00:14:10and have but newly
00:14:10remembered myself.
00:14:12And now one question more.
00:14:14Do you know the way
00:14:15to those new diggings
00:14:16by which the sorceress
00:14:17meant to lead out
00:14:18an army against Overland?
00:14:21Eeeeee!
00:14:22squeaked Golg.
00:14:24Yes,
00:14:24I know that terrible road.
00:14:27I will show you
00:14:28where it begins,
00:14:29but it is no matter of use,
00:14:31your honour,
00:14:32asking me to go
00:14:33with you on it.
00:14:34I'll die,
00:14:36rather.
00:14:37Why?
00:14:38asked Eustace anxiously.
00:14:40What's so dreadful about it?
00:14:42Too near the top.
00:14:43The outside,
00:14:45said Golg,
00:14:46shuddering.
00:14:47That was the worst thing
00:14:49the witch did to us.
00:14:50We were going to be led out
00:14:52into the open,
00:14:54onto the outside
00:14:55of the world.
00:14:57They say there's no roof
00:14:58at all there,
00:14:59only a horrible great emptiness
00:15:00called the sky.
00:15:03And the diggings
00:15:04have gone so far
00:15:05that a few strokes
00:15:06of the pick
00:15:06would bring you out to it.
00:15:09I wouldn't dare
00:15:10go near them.
00:15:11Hooray!
00:15:13Now you're talking,
00:15:14cried Eustace.
00:15:15And Jill said,
00:15:16but it's not horrid
00:15:17at all up there.
00:15:18We like it.
00:15:19We live there.
00:15:21I know you overlanders
00:15:23live there,
00:15:23said Golg,
00:15:24but I thought it was
00:15:25because you couldn't
00:15:26find your way down inside.
00:15:28You can't really like it,
00:15:30crawling about like flies
00:15:32on the top of the world.
00:15:34What about showing us
00:15:35the road at once,
00:15:37said Puddleglum.
00:15:38In a good hour,
00:15:40cried the prince.
00:15:41The whole party set out.
00:15:44The prince remounted
00:15:45his charger,
00:15:46Puddleglum climbed up
00:15:47behind Jill,
00:15:49and Golg led the way.
00:15:51As he went,
00:15:52he kept shouting out
00:15:53the good news
00:15:54that the witch was dead,
00:15:55and that the four overlanders
00:15:56were not dangerous.
00:15:58And those who heard him
00:15:59shouted it on to others,
00:16:01so that in a few minutes
00:16:02the whole of Underland
00:16:03was ringing with shouts
00:16:05and cheers,
00:16:06and gnomes by hundreds
00:16:08and thousands,
00:16:09leaping,
00:16:10turning cartwheels,
00:16:11standing on their heads,
00:16:12playing leapfrog,
00:16:14and letting off huge crackers,
00:16:15came pressing round
00:16:17Coalblack and Snowflake,
00:16:19and the prince had to tell
00:16:20the story of his own
00:16:21enchantment and deliverance
00:16:22at least ten times.
00:16:25In this way,
00:16:26they came to the edge
00:16:27of the chasm.
00:16:29It was about a thousand feet long,
00:16:31and perhaps two hundred wide.
00:16:33They dismounted
00:16:35from their horses
00:16:35and came to the edge
00:16:36and looked down into it.
00:16:39A strong heat
00:16:41smote up into their faces,
00:16:43mixed with a smell
00:16:44which was quite unlike
00:16:45any they had ever smelled.
00:16:47It was rich,
00:16:48sharp,
00:16:49exciting,
00:16:51and made you sneeze.
00:16:53The depth of the chasm
00:16:54was so bright
00:16:55that at first
00:16:56it dazzled their eyes
00:16:57and they could see nothing.
00:16:58When they got used to it,
00:17:00they thought they could
00:17:01make out a river of fire,
00:17:02and on the banks
00:17:03of that river
00:17:04what seemed to be
00:17:05fields and groves
00:17:07of an unbearable
00:17:08hot brilliance,
00:17:09though they were dim
00:17:10compared with the river.
00:17:12There were blues,
00:17:14reds,
00:17:14greens,
00:17:15and whites
00:17:16all jumbled together.
00:17:18A very good
00:17:18stained glass window
00:17:20with the tropical sun
00:17:21staring straight through it
00:17:22at midday
00:17:23might have something
00:17:23of the same effect.
00:17:25Down the rugged sides
00:17:27of the chasm,
00:17:28looking black
00:17:29like flies
00:17:30against all that fiery light,
00:17:31hundreds of earthmen
00:17:33were climbing.
00:17:35Your honours,
00:17:36said Golg,
00:17:37and when they turned
00:17:38to look at him
00:17:38they could see nothing
00:17:39but blackness
00:17:40for a few minutes,
00:17:41their eyes were so dazzled.
00:17:42Your honours,
00:17:44why don't you
00:17:45come down to Bisham?
00:17:46You'll be happier there
00:17:48than in that cold,
00:17:49unprotected,
00:17:50naked country
00:17:51out on top,
00:17:52or at least come down
00:17:53for a short visit.
00:17:56Jill took it for granted
00:17:57that none of the others
00:17:58would listen to such an idea
00:18:00for a moment.
00:18:01To her horror
00:18:02she heard the prince saying,
00:18:04Truly,
00:18:05friend Golg,
00:18:06I have half a mind
00:18:07to come down with you,
00:18:08for this is
00:18:09a marvellous adventure,
00:18:11and it may be
00:18:11no mortal man
00:18:12has ever looked
00:18:13into Bisham before,
00:18:14or will ever
00:18:14have the chance again.
00:18:16And I know not how,
00:18:17as the years pass,
00:18:18I shall bear to remember
00:18:19that it was once
00:18:20in my power
00:18:20to have probed
00:18:21the uttermost pit of earth,
00:18:23and that I forbore.
00:18:26But could a man
00:18:27live there?
00:18:28You do not swim
00:18:29in the fire river itself.
00:18:32Oh, no,
00:18:32Your Honour,
00:18:33not we.
00:18:34It's only salamanders
00:18:36live in the fire itself.
00:18:38What kind of beast
00:18:39is your salamander?
00:18:40asked the prince.
00:18:42It's hard to tell
00:18:44their kind,
00:18:45Your Honour,
00:18:45said Golg,
00:18:46for they are too
00:18:47white-hot to look at,
00:18:49but they are most like
00:18:50small dragons.
00:18:52They speak to us
00:18:53out of the fire.
00:18:54They are wonderfully
00:18:55clever with their tongues,
00:18:56very witty and eloquent,
00:18:59Jill glanced hastily
00:19:00at Eustace.
00:19:01She had felt sure
00:19:02that he would like
00:19:02the idea of climbing
00:19:03down that chasm
00:19:04even less than she did.
00:19:06Her heart sank
00:19:07as she saw
00:19:08that his face
00:19:09was quite changed.
00:19:10He looked much more
00:19:11like the prince
00:19:12than like the old scrub
00:19:14at Experiment House.
00:19:16For all his adventures
00:19:17and the days
00:19:18when he had sailed
00:19:19with King Caspian
00:19:20were coming back to him.
00:19:22Your Highness,
00:19:24he said,
00:19:24if my old friend
00:19:25Reapicheep the Mouse
00:19:26were here,
00:19:27he would say
00:19:28we could not now
00:19:29refuse the adventures
00:19:30of Bism without
00:19:31a great impeachment
00:19:32to our honour.
00:19:34Down there,
00:19:36said Golg,
00:19:37I could show you
00:19:38real gold,
00:19:39real silver,
00:19:40real diamonds.
00:19:42Bosh,
00:19:43said Jill rudely,
00:19:44as if we didn't know
00:19:45that we're below
00:19:46the deepest mines
00:19:47even here.
00:19:48Yes,
00:19:50said Golg,
00:19:51I have heard
00:19:53of those little scratches
00:19:54in the crust
00:19:55that you top dwellers
00:19:56called mines,
00:19:57but that's where
00:19:58you get dead gold,
00:20:00dead silver,
00:20:01dead gems.
00:20:02Down in Bism
00:20:03we have them alive
00:20:05and growing.
00:20:07There I'll pick you
00:20:08bunches of rubies
00:20:09that you can eat
00:20:10and squeeze you
00:20:11a cup full of diamond juice.
00:20:14You won't care much
00:20:15about fingering
00:20:15the cold dead treasures
00:20:16of your shallow mines
00:20:18after you've tasted
00:20:19the live ones of Bism.
00:20:21My father went
00:20:23to the world's end,
00:20:24said Rillian thoughtfully.
00:20:26It would be a marvellous
00:20:27thing if his son
00:20:28went to the bottom
00:20:28of the world.
00:20:30If your highness
00:20:31wants to see your father
00:20:32while he's still alive,
00:20:34which I think he'd prefer,
00:20:36said Puddleglum,
00:20:37it's about time
00:20:38we were getting
00:20:38onto that road
00:20:39to the diggings.
00:20:41And I won't go down
00:20:42that hole,
00:20:43whatever anyone says,
00:20:44added Jill.
00:20:46Why,
00:20:46if your honours
00:20:47are really set
00:20:48to go back
00:20:49to the overworld,
00:20:50said Golg,
00:20:51there is one bit
00:20:52of the road
00:20:53that's rather lower
00:20:54than this,
00:20:55and perhaps
00:20:55if that flood's
00:20:56still rising.
00:20:58Oh, do, do, do,
00:20:59come on,
00:21:00begged Jill.
00:21:01I fear it must be so,
00:21:03said the prince
00:21:04with a deep sigh,
00:21:05but I have left
00:21:06half of my heart
00:21:07in the land of Bism.
00:21:09Please,
00:21:10begged Jill.
00:21:11Where is the road?
00:21:13asked Puddleglum.
00:21:15There are lamps
00:21:16all the way,
00:21:17said Golg.
00:21:18Your honour
00:21:19can see the beginning
00:21:19of the road
00:21:20on the far side
00:21:21of the chasm.
00:21:23How long
00:21:24will the lamps
00:21:24burn for?
00:21:25asked Puddleglum.
00:21:27At that moment,
00:21:28a hissing,
00:21:29scorching voice
00:21:30like the voice
00:21:31of fire itself,
00:21:33they wondered afterwards
00:21:34if it could have been
00:21:34a salamander's,
00:21:36came whistling up
00:21:37out of the very depths
00:21:38of Bism.
00:21:39Quick, quick, quick,
00:21:41to the cliffs,
00:21:42to the cliffs,
00:21:43to the cliffs,
00:21:44it said.
00:21:46The rift closes,
00:21:48it closes,
00:21:48it closes,
00:21:49quick, quick.
00:21:52And at the same time,
00:21:53with ear-shattering
00:21:54cracks and creaks,
00:21:56the rocks moved.
00:21:58Already,
00:21:58while they looked,
00:21:59the chasm was narrower.
00:22:01From every side,
00:22:02belated gnomes
00:22:03were rushing into it.
00:22:05They would not wait
00:22:06to climb down the rocks,
00:22:07they flung themselves
00:22:08headlong,
00:22:09and either because
00:22:10so strong a blast
00:22:10of hot air
00:22:11was beating up
00:22:12from the bottom,
00:22:12or for some other reason,
00:22:14they could be seen
00:22:15floating downwards
00:22:16like leaves.
00:22:18Thicker and thicker
00:22:19they floated,
00:22:20till their blackness
00:22:21almost blotted out
00:22:22the fiery river
00:22:23and the groves
00:22:24of live gems.
00:22:26Goodbye to your honours,
00:22:28I'm off,
00:22:29shouted Golg,
00:22:30and dived.
00:22:32Only a few were left
00:22:33to follow him.
00:22:35The chasm
00:22:35was now no broader
00:22:36than a stream.
00:22:38Now it was narrow
00:22:39as the slit
00:22:39in a pillar box.
00:22:41Now it was only
00:22:41an intensely bright thread.
00:22:44Then,
00:22:45with a shock
00:22:45like a thousand
00:22:46goods trains
00:22:47crashing into
00:22:48a thousand pairs
00:22:49of buffers,
00:22:50the lips of rock
00:22:51closed.
00:22:53The hot,
00:22:54maddening smell
00:22:54vanished.
00:22:56The travellers
00:22:56were alone
00:22:57in an underworld
00:22:58which now looked
00:22:59far blacker
00:22:59than before.
00:23:01Pale,
00:23:02dim,
00:23:02and dreary,
00:23:03the lamps
00:23:04marked the direction
00:23:05of the road.
00:23:07Now,
00:23:07said Puddleglum,
00:23:09as ten of one
00:23:10we've already
00:23:10stayed too long,
00:23:12but we may as well
00:23:13make a troy.
00:23:14Those lamps
00:23:15will give out
00:23:16in five minutes,
00:23:17I should wander.
00:23:19They urged the horses
00:23:20to a canter
00:23:21and thundered
00:23:22along the dusky road
00:23:23in fine style.
00:23:25But almost at once
00:23:26it began going downhill.
00:23:28They would have thought
00:23:29Golg had sent them
00:23:30the wrong way
00:23:31if they had not seen
00:23:32on the other side
00:23:33of the valley,
00:23:34the lamps going on
00:23:35and upwards
00:23:35as far as the eye
00:23:36could reach.
00:23:38But at the bottom
00:23:39of the valley
00:23:39the lamps shone
00:23:40on moving water.
00:23:43Haste,
00:23:44cried the prince.
00:23:45They galloped
00:23:45down the slope.
00:23:47It would have been
00:23:47nasty enough
00:23:48at the bottom
00:23:48even five minutes
00:23:49later,
00:23:50for the tide
00:23:50was running up
00:23:51the valley
00:23:51like a mill race,
00:23:53and if it had
00:23:54come to swimming
00:23:54the horses
00:23:55could hardly
00:23:56have won over.
00:23:58But it was still
00:23:58only a foot or two
00:23:59deep,
00:24:00and though it
00:24:00swished terribly
00:24:01round the horse's
00:24:02legs,
00:24:03they reached the
00:24:03far side in safety.
00:24:06Then began the
00:24:07slow, weary march
00:24:08uphill with nothing
00:24:09ahead to look at
00:24:10but the pale lamps
00:24:11which went up and up
00:24:12as far as the eye
00:24:13could reach.
00:24:15When they looked
00:24:16back,
00:24:16they could see
00:24:17the water spreading.
00:24:19All the hills
00:24:20of Underland
00:24:21were now islands
00:24:22and it was only
00:24:23on those islands
00:24:24that the lamps
00:24:24remained.
00:24:26Every moment
00:24:27some distant light
00:24:28vanished.
00:24:30Soon there would
00:24:30be total darkness
00:24:31everywhere except
00:24:32on the road
00:24:33they were following.
00:24:34And even on the
00:24:35lower part of it
00:24:36behind them,
00:24:37though no lamps
00:24:37had yet gone out,
00:24:39the lamplight shone
00:24:40on water.
00:24:42Although they had
00:24:43good reason for
00:24:44hurrying,
00:24:44the horses could
00:24:45not go on forever
00:24:46without a rest.
00:24:48They halted,
00:24:49and in silence
00:24:50they could hear
00:24:50the lapping of
00:24:51water.
00:24:51I wonder,
00:24:55is, uh,
00:24:55what's-his-name
00:24:56Father Time
00:24:57flooded out now,
00:24:58said Jill,
00:24:59and all those
00:24:59strange sleeping
00:25:01animals?
00:25:02I don't think
00:25:03we're as high as
00:25:04that,
00:25:04said Eustace.
00:25:06Don't you remember
00:25:06how we had to go
00:25:07downhill to reach
00:25:08the sunless sea?
00:25:09I shouldn't think
00:25:10the water has reached
00:25:11Father Time's cave yet.
00:25:14That's his baby,
00:25:15said Puddleglum.
00:25:17I'm more interested
00:25:18in the lamps
00:25:18on this road.
00:25:19Look a bit sickly,
00:25:20don't they?
00:25:22They always did,
00:25:23said Jill.
00:25:24Ah,
00:25:25said Puddleglum,
00:25:26but they're greener
00:25:27now.
00:25:29You don't mean to say
00:25:30you think they're
00:25:30going out,
00:25:31cried Eustace.
00:25:32Well,
00:25:33however they work,
00:25:34you can't expect
00:25:34them to last forever,
00:25:35you know,
00:25:36replied the Marsh Wiggle.
00:25:38But don't let your
00:25:39spirits down,
00:25:39Scrub.
00:25:40I've got my eye
00:25:41on the water,
00:25:42too,
00:25:42and I don't think
00:25:43it's rising so fast
00:25:44as it did.
00:25:46Small comfort,
00:25:47friend,
00:25:47said the Prince,
00:25:48if we cannot find
00:25:49our way out.
00:25:50I cry you mercy
00:25:52all.
00:25:53I am to blame
00:25:54for my pride
00:25:55and fantasy
00:25:56which delayed us
00:25:57by the mouth
00:25:57of the land
00:25:58of Bysom.
00:25:59Now,
00:26:00let us ride on.
00:26:03During the hour
00:26:04or so that followed,
00:26:06Jill sometimes thought
00:26:07that Puddleglum
00:26:07was right about
00:26:08the lamps,
00:26:09and sometimes thought
00:26:10that it was only
00:26:10her imagination.
00:26:13Meanwhile,
00:26:13the land
00:26:14was changing.
00:26:15The roof
00:26:16of Underland
00:26:16was so near
00:26:17that even by
00:26:18that dull light
00:26:18they could now
00:26:20see it quite
00:26:20distinctly,
00:26:21and the great
00:26:22rugged walls
00:26:23of Underland
00:26:24could be seen
00:26:24drawing closer
00:26:25on each side.
00:26:27The road,
00:26:28in fact,
00:26:29was leading them
00:26:29up into a steep
00:26:30tunnel.
00:26:31They began to pass
00:26:32picks and shovels
00:26:34and barrows,
00:26:34and other signs
00:26:35that the diggers
00:26:36had recently been
00:26:37at work.
00:26:38If only one
00:26:39could be sure
00:26:40of getting out,
00:26:41all this was
00:26:41very cheering,
00:26:42but the thought
00:26:43of going on
00:26:44into a hole
00:26:44that would get
00:26:45narrower and narrower
00:26:46and harder
00:26:47to turn back in
00:26:48was very unpleasant.
00:26:51At last,
00:26:52the roof was so low
00:26:53that Puddleglum
00:26:53and the prince
00:26:54knocked their heads
00:26:55against it.
00:26:56The party dismounted
00:26:58and led the horses.
00:27:00The road was uneven
00:27:01here,
00:27:02and one had to pick
00:27:03one's steps
00:27:03with some care.
00:27:05That was how
00:27:06Jill noticed
00:27:07the growing darkness.
00:27:09There was no doubt
00:27:10about it now.
00:27:10The faces of the others
00:27:13looked strange
00:27:13and ghastly
00:27:14in the green glow.
00:27:16Then all at once,
00:27:17she couldn't help it,
00:27:19Jill gave a little scream.
00:27:21One light,
00:27:22the next one ahead,
00:27:24went out altogether.
00:27:25The one behind them
00:27:26did the same.
00:27:28Then they were
00:27:29in absolute darkness.
00:27:31Courage, friends,
00:27:32came Prince Rillian's voice.
00:27:34Whether we live or die,
00:27:36Aslan will be
00:27:37our good lord.
00:27:38That's right, sir,
00:27:39said Puddleglum's voice.
00:27:41And you must always
00:27:42remember there's one
00:27:43good thing about being
00:27:44trapped down here.
00:27:45It'll save funeral expenses.
00:27:49Jill held her tongue.
00:27:51If you don't want
00:27:51other people to know
00:27:52how frightened you are,
00:27:53this is always a wise
00:27:54thing to do.
00:27:55It's your voice
00:27:56that gives you away.
00:27:58We might as well
00:27:59go on as stand here,
00:28:02said Eustace.
00:28:03And when she heard
00:28:04the tremble in his voice,
00:28:06Jill knew how wise
00:28:07she'd be not to trust
00:28:08her own.
00:28:08Puddleglum and Eustace
00:28:11went first with their
00:28:12arms stretched out
00:28:13in front of them
00:28:14for fear of blundering
00:28:15into anything.
00:28:17Jill and the prince
00:28:18followed,
00:28:19leading the horses.
00:28:19I say, came Eustace's voice
00:28:23much later,
00:28:24are my eyes going wrong
00:28:25or is there a patch
00:28:27of light up there?
00:28:29Before anyone could
00:28:30answer him,
00:28:30Puddleglum called out,
00:28:31stop.
00:28:33I'm up against a dead end
00:28:35and it's earth,
00:28:37not rock.
00:28:39What were you saying,
00:28:39scrub?
00:28:41By the lion,
00:28:43said the prince.
00:28:44Eustace is right.
00:28:46There is a sort of...
00:28:47But it's not daylight,
00:28:49said Jill.
00:28:50It's only a cold blue
00:28:52sort of light.
00:28:54Better than nothing,
00:28:54though, said Eustace.
00:28:55Can we get up to it?
00:28:57It's not right overhead,
00:29:00said Puddleglum.
00:29:01It's above us,
00:29:02but it's in this wall
00:29:04that I've run into.
00:29:05How would it be, Pole,
00:29:07if you got on my shoulders
00:29:08and saw whether
00:29:09you could get up to it?
00:29:13Chapter 15
00:29:14The Disappearance of Jill
00:29:16The patch of light
00:29:18did not show up anything
00:29:20down in the darkness
00:29:20where they were standing.
00:29:22The others could only hear,
00:29:24not see,
00:29:25Jill's efforts
00:29:25to get onto
00:29:26the Marsh Wiggles' back.
00:29:28That is,
00:29:28they heard him saying,
00:29:30Well,
00:29:30you needn't put your finger
00:29:31in my eye,
00:29:32and nor your foot
00:29:33in my mouth either,
00:29:35and that's more like it,
00:29:37and now I'll hold
00:29:38onto your legs,
00:29:40that'll leave your arms
00:29:41free to steady yourself
00:29:42against the earth.
00:29:44Then they looked up,
00:29:45and soon they saw
00:29:46the black shape
00:29:47of Jill's head
00:29:48against the patch of light.
00:29:51Well,
00:29:51they all shouted up anxiously,
00:29:53It's a hole,
00:29:56called Jill's voice.
00:29:57I could get through it
00:29:58if I was a little bit higher.
00:30:01What do you see through it?
00:30:02asked Eustace.
00:30:04Nothing much yet,
00:30:06said Jill.
00:30:07I say,
00:30:07Puddle Club,
00:30:08let go my legs
00:30:09so that I can stand
00:30:10on your shoulders
00:30:11instead of sitting on them.
00:30:12I can steady myself
00:30:13all right against the edge.
00:30:15They could hear her moving,
00:30:17and then much more of her
00:30:18came into sight
00:30:19against the greyness
00:30:20of the opening.
00:30:20In fact,
00:30:22all of her down to the waist.
00:30:24I say,
00:30:26began Jill,
00:30:26but suddenly broke off
00:30:27with a cry.
00:30:29Not a sharp cry.
00:30:31It sounded more
00:30:32as if her mouth
00:30:32had been muffled up
00:30:33or had something
00:30:34pushed into it.
00:30:36After that,
00:30:37she found her voice
00:30:38and seemed to be shouting
00:30:39out as loud as she could,
00:30:41but they couldn't hear the words.
00:30:43Two things then happened
00:30:45at the same moment.
00:30:46The patch of light
00:30:47was completely blocked up
00:30:48for a second or so,
00:30:49and they heard
00:30:50both a scuffling,
00:30:51struggling sound
00:30:52and the voice
00:30:53of the Marsh Wiggle
00:30:54gasping,
00:30:55Quick!
00:30:56Oh,
00:30:56hold on to her legs!
00:30:57Someone's pulling her!
00:30:59There!
00:30:59No!
00:30:59Here!
00:31:00Oh,
00:31:00too late!
00:31:01The opening
00:31:02and the cold light
00:31:04which filled it
00:31:04were now perfectly clear again.
00:31:06Jill had vanished.
00:31:08Jill!
00:31:09Jill!
00:31:10They shouted frantically,
00:31:11but there was no answer.
00:31:13Why the dickens
00:31:14couldn't you have held her feet?
00:31:15said Eustace.
00:31:17I don't know,
00:31:18scrub!
00:31:18groaned Puddleglum.
00:31:20Born to be a misfit,
00:31:21I shouldn't wonder.
00:31:22Fated!
00:31:23Fated to be
00:31:24Pole's death,
00:31:25just as I was
00:31:26fated to eat
00:31:27talking stag
00:31:28at Harfang.
00:31:29Not that it isn't
00:31:30my own fault
00:31:30as well,
00:31:31of course.
00:31:32This is the greatest
00:31:34shame and sorrow
00:31:35that could have fallen
00:31:35on us,
00:31:36said the prince.
00:31:37We have sent
00:31:38a brave lady
00:31:39into the hands
00:31:39of enemies
00:31:40and stayed behind
00:31:41in safety.
00:31:43Don't paint it
00:31:44too black,
00:31:44sir,
00:31:45said Puddleglum.
00:31:46We're not very safe,
00:31:48except for death
00:31:49by starvation
00:31:50in this hole.
00:31:52I wonder,
00:31:53am I small enough
00:31:54to get through
00:31:54where Jill did?
00:31:55said Eustace.
00:31:57What had really
00:31:58happened to Jill
00:31:59was this.
00:32:01As soon as she had
00:32:02got her head
00:32:02out of the hole,
00:32:03she found that
00:32:03she was looking down
00:32:04as if from an
00:32:05upstairs window,
00:32:07not up,
00:32:08as if through
00:32:08a trap door.
00:32:10She'd been so long
00:32:11in the dark
00:32:12that her eyes
00:32:12couldn't at first
00:32:13take in what
00:32:14they were seeing,
00:32:15except that she
00:32:16was not looking
00:32:16at the daylit,
00:32:17sunny world
00:32:18which she so
00:32:19wanted to see.
00:32:21The air seemed
00:32:22to be deadly cold
00:32:23and the light
00:32:24was pale and blue.
00:32:27There was also
00:32:27a good deal
00:32:28of noise going on
00:32:29and a lot of
00:32:30white objects
00:32:31flying about
00:32:32in the air.
00:32:33It was at that
00:32:34moment that she'd
00:32:35shouted down
00:32:36to Puddleglum
00:32:36to let her stand
00:32:37up on his shoulders.
00:32:39When she'd done this,
00:32:40she could see
00:32:41and hear
00:32:42a good deal
00:32:42better.
00:32:44The noises
00:32:45she'd been hearing
00:32:45turned out
00:32:46to be of two
00:32:46kinds,
00:32:48the rhythmical
00:32:48thump of several
00:32:49feet and the
00:32:51music of four
00:32:51fiddles,
00:32:52three flutes
00:32:53and a drum.
00:32:55She also got
00:32:56her own position
00:32:57clear.
00:32:58She was looking
00:32:59out of a hole
00:33:00in a steep bank
00:33:01which sloped
00:33:02down and reached
00:33:03the level
00:33:04about fourteen
00:33:05feet below her.
00:33:06Everything
00:33:06was very white.
00:33:08A lot of people
00:33:09were moving about.
00:33:11Then she gasped.
00:33:13The people
00:33:14were trim
00:33:14little fawns
00:33:15and dryads
00:33:16with leaf-crowned
00:33:17hair floating
00:33:18behind them.
00:33:20For a second,
00:33:21they looked as
00:33:22if they were
00:33:22moving anyhow.
00:33:24Then she saw
00:33:25that they were
00:33:25really doing
00:33:26a dance,
00:33:27a dance with
00:33:27so many
00:33:28complicated steps
00:33:29and figures
00:33:29that it took
00:33:30you some time
00:33:31to understand it.
00:33:32Then it came
00:33:33over her
00:33:33like a thunderclap
00:33:34that the pale
00:33:35blue light
00:33:36was really
00:33:36moonlight
00:33:37and the white
00:33:39stuff on
00:33:39the ground
00:33:40was really
00:33:40snow
00:33:40and of course
00:33:42there were
00:33:43the stars
00:33:44staring in
00:33:45a black
00:33:45frosty sky
00:33:46overhead
00:33:47and the tall
00:33:48black things
00:33:49behind the
00:33:49dancers
00:33:50were trees.
00:33:51They had not
00:33:52only got out
00:33:53into the upper
00:33:53world at last
00:33:54but had come
00:33:55out in the
00:33:56heart of
00:33:56Narnia.
00:33:58Jill felt
00:33:59she could have
00:33:59fainted with
00:34:00delight
00:34:00and the music
00:34:02the wild music
00:34:03intensely sweet
00:34:04and yet just
00:34:05the least bit
00:34:06eerie too
00:34:07and full of
00:34:08good magic
00:34:08as the
00:34:08witcher's
00:34:09thrumming
00:34:09had been
00:34:10full of
00:34:10bad magic
00:34:11made her
00:34:12feel it
00:34:12all the
00:34:13more.
00:34:15All this
00:34:16takes a long
00:34:16time to tell
00:34:17but of course
00:34:17it took a
00:34:18very short
00:34:18time to see.
00:34:21Jill turned
00:34:21almost at once
00:34:22to shout down
00:34:23to the others.
00:34:24I say it's
00:34:25all right
00:34:25we're out
00:34:26and we're
00:34:26home
00:34:27but the
00:34:27reason she
00:34:28never got
00:34:28any further
00:34:28than I say
00:34:29was this.
00:34:31Circling
00:34:32round and
00:34:32round the
00:34:33dancers
00:34:33was a ring
00:34:33of dwarfs
00:34:34all dressed
00:34:35in their
00:34:36finest clothes
00:34:37mostly scarlet
00:34:38with fur-lined
00:34:39hoods and
00:34:39golden tassels
00:34:40and big
00:34:41furry top
00:34:42boots.
00:34:43As they
00:34:44circled round
00:34:45they were all
00:34:46diligently throwing
00:34:47snowballs
00:34:47those were the
00:34:48white things
00:34:49that Jill had
00:34:49seen flying
00:34:50through the
00:34:50air.
00:34:51They weren't
00:34:52throwing them
00:34:52at the
00:34:53dancers as
00:34:54silly boys
00:34:54might have
00:34:55been doing
00:34:55in England
00:34:55they were
00:34:56throwing them
00:34:57through the
00:34:57dance in
00:34:58such perfect
00:34:58time with
00:34:59the music
00:34:59and with
00:35:00such perfect
00:35:00aim
00:35:01that if all
00:35:02the dancers
00:35:02were in
00:35:02exactly the
00:35:03right places
00:35:04at exactly
00:35:04the right
00:35:05moments
00:35:05no one
00:35:06would be
00:35:06hit.
00:35:08This is
00:35:08called the
00:35:09great snow
00:35:09dance and
00:35:10it is done
00:35:11every year
00:35:12in Narnia
00:35:12on the first
00:35:13moonlit night
00:35:14when there is
00:35:15snow on the
00:35:15ground.
00:35:17Of course it
00:35:17is a kind
00:35:18of game as
00:35:18well as a
00:35:19dance because
00:35:20every now and
00:35:20then some
00:35:21dancer will be
00:35:22the least
00:35:22little bit
00:35:22wrong and
00:35:24get a snowball
00:35:24in the face
00:35:25and then
00:35:26everyone laughs.
00:35:27But a good
00:35:28team of
00:35:28dancers dwarfs
00:35:29and musicians
00:35:30will keep it
00:35:31up for hours
00:35:32without a
00:35:32single hit.
00:35:34On fine
00:35:34nights when
00:35:35the cold
00:35:36and the
00:35:37drum taps
00:35:37and the
00:35:37hooting of
00:35:38the owls
00:35:39and the
00:35:39moonlight have
00:35:40got into
00:35:40their wild
00:35:41woodland blood
00:35:42and made it
00:35:42even wilder
00:35:43they will
00:35:44dance till
00:35:45daybreak.
00:35:46I wish you
00:35:47could see it
00:35:47for yourselves.
00:35:49What had
00:35:50stopped Jill
00:35:50when she got
00:35:51as far as
00:35:51the say
00:35:52of I say
00:35:53was of course
00:35:54simply a fine
00:35:55big snowball
00:35:56that came
00:35:57sailing through
00:35:57the dance
00:35:58from a dwarf
00:35:58on the far
00:35:59side and got
00:36:00her fair and
00:36:01square in
00:36:02the mouth.
00:36:03She didn't
00:36:04in the least
00:36:04mind.
00:36:05Twenty snowballs
00:36:06would not have
00:36:07damped her
00:36:07spirits at that
00:36:08moment.
00:36:09But however
00:36:10happy you are
00:36:10feeling you
00:36:11can't talk
00:36:12with your
00:36:12mouth full of
00:36:13snow and
00:36:14when after
00:36:15considerable
00:36:16spluttering she
00:36:16could speak
00:36:17again she
00:36:18quite forgot
00:36:18in her
00:36:19excitement that
00:36:19the others
00:36:20down in the
00:36:20dark behind
00:36:21her still
00:36:22didn't know
00:36:22the good
00:36:23news.
00:36:24She simply
00:36:24leaned as
00:36:25far out of
00:36:25the hole as
00:36:26she could
00:36:26and yelled
00:36:27to the dancers
00:36:28help help
00:36:30we're buried
00:36:30in the hill
00:36:31come and dig
00:36:32us out.
00:36:33The Narnians
00:36:34who had not
00:36:35even noticed
00:36:35the little hole
00:36:36in the hillside
00:36:37were of course
00:36:37very surprised
00:36:38and looked about
00:36:39in several wrong
00:36:40directions before
00:36:41they found out
00:36:42where the voice
00:36:42was coming from
00:36:43but when they
00:36:44caught sight of
00:36:45Jill they all
00:36:45came running
00:36:46towards her
00:36:47and as many
00:36:47as could
00:36:48scrambled up
00:36:49the bank
00:36:49and a dozen
00:36:50or more hands
00:36:51were stretched
00:36:51up to help
00:36:52her.
00:36:53And Jill
00:36:53caught hold
00:36:54of them
00:36:54and thus got
00:36:55out of the
00:36:56hole and came
00:36:56slithering down
00:36:57the bank
00:36:58head first
00:36:58and then
00:36:59picked herself
00:37:00up and said
00:37:00oh do go
00:37:02and dig
00:37:02the others
00:37:03out.
00:37:03There are
00:37:04three others
00:37:04besides the
00:37:05horses and
00:37:06one of them
00:37:06is Prince
00:37:07Rillian.
00:37:08She was already
00:37:09in the middle
00:37:10of a crowd
00:37:10when she said
00:37:11this for
00:37:12besides the
00:37:12dancers all
00:37:13sorts of
00:37:14people who
00:37:14had been
00:37:14watching the
00:37:15dance and
00:37:16whom she
00:37:16had not
00:37:16seen at
00:37:17first came
00:37:17running up.
00:37:19Squirrels
00:37:19came out of
00:37:20the trees
00:37:20in showers
00:37:21and so did
00:37:22owls.
00:37:23Hedgehogs
00:37:23came waddling
00:37:24as fast as
00:37:25their short
00:37:25legs would
00:37:26carry them.
00:37:26Bears and
00:37:27badgers
00:37:28followed at
00:37:29a slower
00:37:29pace.
00:37:30A great
00:37:31panther
00:37:31twitching its
00:37:32tail in
00:37:33excitement
00:37:33was the
00:37:34last to
00:37:35join the
00:37:35party.
00:37:37But as
00:37:37soon as
00:37:38they understood
00:37:38what Jill
00:37:38was saying
00:37:39they all
00:37:40became
00:37:40active.
00:37:42Pick and
00:37:42shovel boys
00:37:42pick and
00:37:43shovel.
00:37:43Off for
00:37:44our tools
00:37:44said the
00:37:45dwarfs
00:37:45and dashed
00:37:46away into
00:37:46the woods
00:37:47at top
00:37:47speed.
00:37:48Wake up
00:37:48some

00:37:49they're

00:37:50they're
00:37:51quite as
00:37:51good as
00:37:51dwarfs
00:37:52said a
00:37:52voice.
00:37:53What was
00:37:54that she
00:37:54said about
00:37:55Prince
00:37:55Rillian
00:37:55said
00:37:56another.
00:37:57Hush
00:37:58said the
00:37:58panther.
00:37:59The poor
00:38:00child's
00:38:00crazed and
00:38:01no wonder
00:38:02after being
00:38:02lost inside
00:38:03the hill
00:38:03she doesn't
00:38:04know what
00:38:05she's saying.
00:38:06That's
00:38:06right said
00:38:07an old
00:38:08bear.
00:38:09Why she
00:38:09said Prince
00:38:10Rillian
00:38:10was a
00:38:10horse.
00:38:12No she
00:38:12didn't
00:38:12said a
00:38:13squirrel
00:38:13very
00:38:14pert.
00:38:15Yes she
00:38:15did
00:38:15said another
00:38:16squirrel
00:38:16even
00:38:17pert.
00:38:19It's
00:38:19quite
00:38:21true
00:38:22don't
00:38:22be so
00:38:22silly
00:38:23said
00:38:23Jill.
00:38:24She
00:38:25spoke
00:38:25like
00:38:25that
00:38:25because
00:38:25her
00:38:26teeth
00:38:26were
00:38:26now
00:38:26chattering
00:38:27with
00:38:27the
00:38:27cold.
