00:00Getting the bad ending in a game can be a pretty disappointing experience.
00:04After putting in all that hard work, you realize the game has set you down the path of failure,
00:08and that's pretty darn daunting.
00:10However, don't worry too much because some games include secret solutions
00:14for slipping out of these awful situations.
00:17They're not all easy to get, but when you're already in a tough spot
00:21and heading straight toward a bad ending, you might as well turn lemons into lemonade.
00:25I'm Jess from WhatCulture, and here are 10 secret ways you can turn bad video game endings into good ones.
00:32Number 10. A Mostly Bloodless Stalemate. Fallout 4.
00:36Fallout 4's story relies heavily on the conflict between the four major factions in the game,
00:41and the ending forces you to pick a side to fight for and destroy all their competition in the process.
00:47Pretty much every final mission in the game culminates with you eliminating the other factions,
00:51including any friends and companions that you had there.
00:54However, there is a secret path of least resistance route that has you eliminate only one faction,
01:01and funnily enough, it happens when you mess up doing the proper endings.
01:05If you side with the Minutemen and then get thrown out of the Institute before you finish spying on them,
01:10the game will bump you straight into the final confrontation with the Commonwealth's Boogeymen,
01:15skipping the all-out conflict between the factions in Bunker Hill,
01:18and letting you end the game in a peaceful stalemate,
01:20where the Brotherhood, the Railroad, and the Minutemen can coexist without fighting.
01:26This ending is the only way to keep most of your companions alive, even if they work for opposing factions,
01:31so if you don't want to make any tough choices, remember to be an awful spy that messes up the job.
01:38Number 9. Saving Nier. Baldur's Gate 3.
01:41Baldur's Gate 3 has so many different dialogue options and gameplay choices that,
01:45to this day, people are still discovering new things about it, including new resolutions to different questlines.
01:51One such resolution is the secret good outcome to the evil ending of the main Underdark mission in Act 1.
01:58In the mission, you'll have to choose between siding with the Cult of the Absolute
02:02or helping a group of enslaved gnomes escape from under its grasp.
02:07If you choose the former option and help kill Nier, the Absolute's cultist in charge of the gnomes,
02:12the drow will kill them all. At that point, if you, like me, saw the gnomes die and felt kind of really bad about that,
02:19or maybe you just don't want the Absolute to succeed,
02:22you can still follow a specific chain of dialogue options to break the Absolute's control over Nier's mind
02:28and then convince him to abandon the cult.
02:31This secret choice doesn't save the slaves, but if you already let them die,
02:36it's the second best outcome to this part of the story.
02:38And sure, Nier sucks, but it's still pretty neat that there's a secret way to save him from being a brainwashed lackey.
02:45And then, you know, it's Bald's Gate and kill him if you want to.
02:47Number 8. Saving Rachel by Letting Her Die, House of Ashes
02:51Rachel and Eric are the soon-to-be ex-lovers from the Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment,
02:57House of Ashes, that are probably the most tragic characters in the game.
03:01On top of their lover's quarrel, they're the two survivors within their group
03:04that are the most likely to die, get infected, or be cocooned by the vampire colony inside the ancient tomb.
03:11Keeping both of them alive can be pretty tricky, which is why it's easy to assume you just can't do it.
03:17However, the game does let you save both Rachel and Eric,
03:21although this outcome is hidden behind an option that'd make you believe that you doomed one of them to a certain death.
03:27When Rachel is suspended over a chasm hanging from a rope attached to Eric,
03:31the game makes you choose between cutting her loose or holding onto her.
03:36The former option would have you believe that Rachel will die, but the girl actually survives the fall,
03:42whereas trying to save her will result in Eric falling with her and not enjoying that same kind of luck.
03:48The choice to let her go strains her relationship with Eric,
03:51but it's secretly the only way to keep them both alive in the ending.
03:55Number 7, A Noble Selfish Sacrifice, Until Dawn
03:59Similar to House of Ashes, Supermassive's first horror title, Until Dawn,
04:04also has you ruin a relationship and endanger one of your survivors in order to reach a more satisfying ending.
04:10Matt, one of the eight playable protagonists you would probably know if you'd played this one
04:15as one of the hardest, if not the hardest, character to keep alive,
04:20as saving him requires you to pick a pretty awful and counterintuitive option in the second half of this story.
04:26When he and his girlfriend Emily head to the radio tower that collapses beneath them,
04:30you have to pick between Matt saving Emily or jumping to safety.
04:34Because leaving her can result in a strained relationship at best and her death at worst,
04:40most players choose to help her, even though she kind of sucks.
04:43However, those who go with the worst option are secretly the winners here,
04:47as even though it does ruin Emily and Matt's relationship,
04:51it's also the only way to avoid an instant death cutscene that kills Matt after he tries to help Emily up.
04:57And yes, you also endanger Emily in the process,
05:00but unlike Matt, she does get a chance to survive the fall into the mines,
05:05and also turns into a great character if you don't get it killed.
05:07Number 6, Protecting Heather, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.
05:11The endings of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines fit with the dark theme of the World of Darkness universe,
05:18as they put your character in a pretty dire situation,
05:21turning them into the prime target of pretty much every single vampire group in Los Angeles.
05:26To make the misery of your situation worse,
05:29the game even takes several things from you,
05:31including your haven, the ability to safely walk the street,
05:35and Heather, the young girl who decides to become your character's ghoul
05:39after you save her life in the first act of the game.
05:42If you make Heather into your ghoul, the vampiric equivalent of a servant,
05:46her death is inevitable in each of the game's finales,
05:49as she's kidnapped by the Sabbat and subsequently killed.
05:53However, you can secretly save her life by simply forcing her to go away.
05:57To do so, you have to tell Heather to leave and never come back
06:01before the prince calls a hit on you.
06:03The girl won't be seen in the game's finale,
06:05but because of that, her life will be saved.
06:07She's definitely going to get upset with you,
06:10but considering the alternative, letting go of her is probably the better choice.
06:14Number 5. Steal Epsilon's Money, Grand Theft Auto V
06:18The Epsilon missions are a sequence of secret side quests in Grand Theft Auto V
06:22that Michael can trigger by joining the Epsilon cult via a website.
06:27The quests don't really come with a reward,
06:29as they force you to donate huge wads of cash to advance through the cult's rank,
06:33and by the end of it, the only thing you get for following the Epsilon program
06:37is a rusted and barely functional tractor that drives about as fast as you can walk.
06:43Luckily, if you already started the missions and don't feel like a lousy farm vehicle
06:48is an appropriate reward for spending a small fortune,
06:51there is a way to make your money back, and more in GTA V's final mission.
06:55When the Epsilon program's founder, Chris Fromage, asks you to deliver the cult's money
07:00to a specified drop-off point, simply run away with the cash instead.
07:04This will trigger an intense car chase, but if you manage to flee,
07:08you'll be rewarded with the stolen money, which racks up well over $2 million.
07:13Number 4. Connor Becomes Jericho's New Leader, Detroit Become Human
07:17The Jericho revolution in Detroit Become Human is a pretty easy cause to root for.
07:22You obviously want the deviant androids to succeed and gain their independence.
07:26This is why if you accidentally let their leader Marcus die or be exiled,
07:31the consequences can be heartbreaking,
07:33because his death typically results in the revolution ending
07:36and the androids getting destroyed.
07:38This said, if you do lose Marcus, not all hope is lost,
07:42as you can secretly replace him with an even more beloved character, Connor.
07:47Yes, the very same Cyberlife deviant hunter
07:49can become the new face of the android revolution
07:52if you manage to bring out the deviant in him
07:54before his confrontation with Jericho,
07:56and then create a vacant spot among the group's leaders.
08:00The choice does, unfortunately, require Marcus to die
08:02or be exiled by his android friends,
08:05but on the other hand, it does let Connor take the spotlight
08:08and even succeed in liberating his people,
08:10which, you have to admit, is a pretty awesome outcome.
08:13It's that perfect dose of sweet, sweet irony,
08:16seeing a Cyberlife lackey like Connor becoming the new saviour of all android kind.
08:21Connor is probably better than Marcus anyway.
08:24Although, Jesse Williams. Let's keep going.
08:26Number three, Don't Fear the Reaper, Cyberpunk 2077.
08:30Cyberpunk 2077's finale is a pretty grim spectacle
08:33that either forces you to risk the lives of your friends
08:36in an assault on Arasaka Tower,
08:39or, well, commit suicide.
08:41Fun.
08:42Well, it is Night City.
08:43There are a couple of endings that let you escape this cheery conundrum,
08:47but if you fail to meet the requirements for those,
08:49you're stuck picking between the bad and the worse.
08:53Or are you?
08:54Actually, there is indeed a secret ending that lets you pick neither,
08:58and best of all, it can be triggered even by those who fail to gather allies
09:02or find a way to flee Night City.
09:04Don't Fear the Reaper is a special mission that triggers
09:07if V doesn't pick an answer while discussing their final plan with Johnny.
09:10In this ending, V chooses to storm Arasaka alone
09:14in a last-ditch attempt to destroy the corporation or die in blazing glory.
09:20The ending is special in that it doesn't let you reload after you die,
09:23but if you manage to finish the mission without losing,
09:26and you bet I spent two hours doing this,
09:28it is arguably the best possible choice
09:30as it lets you take down Arasaka and save everyone in the process.
09:34Also, you feel like a damn hero being able to beat that whole thing
09:37without being able to heal.
09:38Taking down a whole private army solo,
09:41it does not get more Night City vigilante than that.
09:44Number 2.
09:45Shifty Ribbon Escape The Witcher 3
09:48The best thing about the ending of The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC
09:51is that the only way to get the best ending in the game
09:54is to set yourself on the path to the worst ending in the game.
09:57In the DLC's final mission, Geralt has to make a choice
10:00between giving up the Duchess's sister Sianna to the vampire Detlaff
10:04or killing him before he destroys Toussaint.
10:07Picking the former option will result in Sianna's death,
10:10which enrages the Duchess Henrietta and causes her to imprison Geralt.
10:15Luckily, if this doesn't sound like the plan for you,
10:18but you already made the choice to bring Sianna to Detlaff,
10:21there's a secret way to save the girl and still walk out the hero.
10:25You see, if you manage to get a magical ribbon for Sianna
10:28while exploring the fairy tale world she's trapped in,
10:31Sianna will use the ribbon to escape Detlaff right before he can kill her,
10:36triggering a fight with the vampire but saving her life.
10:39Although Detlaff has to die in this ending,
10:42it is objectively the best outcome,
10:44as it also allows you to reunite Sianna and Henrietta
10:47without the former killing her sister.
10:49Number 1.
10:50Refuse Molag Bal The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim
10:54Most Skyrim players would agree that the Molag Bal quest,
10:57House of Horrors, is one of the darkest missions in the game.
11:01It basically forces you to become a villain,
11:03taking the lives of good and innocent people,
11:05and once you start it, you're stuck committing atrocities
11:08as you have no way of refusing the will of the Daedric Prince of Domination.
11:13Starting the quest can be a really frustrating thing
11:16for people who are trying to do a good playthrough,
11:19but if you accidentally triggered it, don't worry,
11:21as there is a secret way to finish the quest on a more positive note.
11:25You just have to mess it up.
11:26Despite what Molag Bal tells you,
11:29you don't actually have to obey him.
11:31In the final part of the quest,
11:33when you have to torture a priest called Logrolf the Willful for him,
11:37you can just kill him right away,
11:39which will ultimately fail the quest,
11:41but allow you to refuse Molag Bal
11:44and not participate in his sick and twisted games.
11:47Sure, you don't get the fancy Daedric mace as a reward,
11:50but on the other hand,
11:52you do get to preserve your conscience
11:53and not become a puppet of an evil Daedra.
11:56Besides, let's be real,
11:58Molag Bal's mace is pretty lame.
