It's rare these days for an artist to ask for fewer microphones, but after warming up in our space, Billy Strings did just that. Surrounded by his band, the bluegrass virtuoso brings back the spirit of Tiny Desk's early days. We capture, in his own words, "the way these instruments are meant to sound."

"We've been lucky to play a lot of cool venues," Strings says, pausing to reflect. "But this one's different. It has that same soul to it because — I've seen so many amazing performances that happened right here and I kind of believe that love and spirit kind of soaks into this environment, so just standing here feels like a special thing."

Strings found his roots in bluegrass from his dad. Since then, he's managed to expand the genre to new audiences, amassing a following of super fans — self-proclaimed "billy goats" — that sometimes schedule their lives around his tour. Once you meet Strings, it's not hard to understand why: He's a humble musician and a sorcerer of his craft, wielding a guitar as if it's a part of him.

00:30Ville
00:30Sunshine falling on her pedal so fine
00:36At first when I found you all covered in the dew
00:41The stars how faded the day was brand new
00:46Daisy, red daisy, growing on a hill
00:53Sunshine falling on her pedal so fine
00:59When skies are gloomy and you're covered in the frowns
01:24Oh, Daisy, Red Daisy, I fear my soul is long
01:28Oh, Daisy, Red Daisy, growing on a hill
01:36Sunshine falling on a hill so fine
01:41Rainer than springtime, my body's getting old
01:51Rainer than springtime, my body's getting old
02:04Oh, when you wait night by me, but I'll keep you from the cold
02:10Red Daisy, Red Daisy, growing on a hill
02:18Sunshine falling on a hill so fine
02:24One day a passing traveler plucked you from the ground
02:47Oh, I miss you and your crimson crown
02:53Thank you so much.
03:13Well, we're really glad to be here.
03:15I think we've all watched so many of these
03:19And we've always, always wanted to do this
03:21So thank you for having us here, man, this is awesome
03:25We'll do this one here
03:32As soon as I get this thing back in gear
03:37Called My Alice
03:42Sounds about right, doesn't it?
03:56Like it's in tune a little bit
03:57Alright
04:00Early in the fall, back deep in the woods
04:23The first hint of frost is upon you
04:27About a mile beyond the fieldstone wall
04:31It's not hard to get lost if you want to
04:36Too far from the city to see the white lights
04:44I move in the shadows under cover of light
04:48Too far from the highway to blow a flat tire
04:53I stare in the ashes and fire
04:56Now John St. Paul is a well-known man
05:20Of wealth in his skyscraper palace
05:23He likes his old Cadillac prepped for long drives
05:28I don't like how he looks at my Alice
05:31I work his garage with a wrench in my glove
05:36Bring the stench of his gasoline home to my love
05:40She swears once again she has all she desires
05:45As I stare in the ashes and fire
05:49One day late last week when I got the word
06:12The boss needs his caddy all steady
06:16I remembered his eyes all over my wife
06:21As I carefully got my tools ready
06:24What a terrible shame should he ever break down
06:29With me on his trail
06:31Been so far from town
06:33If his brakes were to fail
06:36With he blew out a tire
06:38And I stared in the ashes and fire
06:42I'll in the curb
06:45I'll see you next to the呀
06:46I won't raise my chains
06:48I'm proud to be
06:50But all I want is my daddy
06:52Come on
06:53Make me
06:53-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty-wanty
06:56Hey-wanty-wanty sponsor
07:00we have made absolutely happy
07:01I want the Vielen baff lion
07:04him
07:06Well, John St. Paul is a well-known man
07:22Of wealth in a skyscraper palace
07:25He likes his old Cadillac grip for long drives
07:30I don't like how he looks at my house
07:34I don't like how he looks at my house

08:17That's Jared Walker on the mandolin right there
08:19And right here on the big old bass fiddle
08:25That's Royal Massat
08:27This is Billy Failing on the banjo
08:33And Alex Hargraves on the fiddle
08:39This one's called Malfunction Junction
08:46That's the one's called Malfunction Junction
08:52For this, it is a little transition
08:56We'll be right back to the next video
08:58And we'll be right back to the next video
09:00We'll be right back to the next video
15:02And I kind of believe that that love and spirit and stuff kind of soaks into this environment.
15:08So even just standing here feels like a special thing, you know.
15:14I don't know.
15:15I don't know.
15:16I don't know.
15:17I don't know.
15:18I'm having fun.
15:20What are some of your favorites?
15:25I don't know.
15:26I don't know.
15:27I don't know.
15:28I don't know.
15:29I don't know.
15:30I don't know.
15:31I don't know.
15:32I don't know.
15:33I don't know.
15:34I don't know.
15:35It's cool.
15:36It's cool.
15:37It's cool.
15:38It's cool.
15:39It's cool to see fish here.
15:40It's cool to see fish here.
15:42It's cool to see fish here.
15:43The goat rodeo stuff back in the day was super sick.
15:44Yeah, we kind of like grew up on this.
15:46I remember back in the day, too, submitting my, you know, audition to be on here.
16:00It only took like, I don't know, 12 more years or something.
16:09We want to say thank you so much and we love each and every one of you.
16:12And here we go for another song.
16:14This one's called Gilda Lily.
16:44I'm sitting under the cypress tree, saw a miracle flying high.
16:57I tuned into the song that she was singing.
17:01The melody was an honest friend and it felt like I was learning to fly.
17:09But I fear I'll never know the feeling.
17:14It must be mine to just be heard.
17:22And it might sound a bit absurd.
17:25I'd sing along with the birds.
17:34I'd sing along if I only knew the words.
17:40I'd sing along with the birds if I only knew the words.
17:50I'd sing along with the birds.
17:51I'd sing along with the birds, but the birds.
18:00Staring into the wishing wells
18:05Got you feeling a particular way
18:08Can't stand to see your own reflection
18:12So toss a penny and close your eyes
18:18And try to think of something to say
18:20Go on, wish to wishes on perfection
18:24It must be nice
18:30To just be heard
18:33And it might sound a bit absurd
18:37I'd sing along with the birds
18:44I'd sing along if I only knew the birds
18:50I'd sing along with the birds
18:55If I only knew the birds
18:58I'd master every birds
19:01Until my spirit learned to burst
19:05Into the morning sun
19:09While my heart is on the run
19:14I'd sing along with the birds
19:18I'd sing along with the birds
19:19So who could go astsky near them
19:19But a mountain totally
19:20プーー
19:28To the birds
21:33I'd sing along with the bird if I only knew the world.
