Four elephants from a local training center use their trunks to pick up large pieces of log and help clear stuck vehicles in Pidie Jaya, a district in Aceh hard hit by flooding.
As the country's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said 961 people have been killed across North and West Sumatra and more than one million displaced.
“We are more focused on clearing debris in front of people’s homes to improve access,” Hadi Sofyan, the head of a local conservation agency, told AFP. “If any vehicles get stuck, we can use the elephants to help,” he added.
