00:00The Olympics are happening in Beijing.
00:02And it's a total dystopian nightmare.
00:24Welcome to China Uncensored, I'm Chris Chappell.
00:27Well, the 2022 Beijing Olympics are a total disaster.
00:32And it goes way beyond the record low ratings.
00:35Here are 10 ways the Beijing Winter Olympics have become a dystopian nightmare.
00:40Number 10
00:42Let's start things off with a good visual of the Games.
00:45You know, set the stage.
00:47Here's the slope for the freestyle skiing big air competition.
00:51Notice the cooling towers in the background?
00:54That's because the slope is in the middle of an industrial wasteland.
00:58To be fair, it's a reclaimed industrial wasteland.
01:02Shogang was a massive industrial park that was closed back in 2011.
01:06And now it's being repurposed as a tourist attraction.
01:10Which is leading to a debate over whether this is inspired or dystopian.
01:14But this brings up the bigger issue of how Beijing was an odd choice for the Winter Olympics.
01:20Because it has no snow.
01:23This is the first Winter Olympics that's relied entirely on fake snow.
01:27And fake snow needs water.
01:30How much water?
01:31Roughly 1 million cubic meters.
01:34Enough to fill 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
01:37And that's just to start the Games.
01:40And just a reminder, you can celebrate this dystopian Olympics in style
01:45with our exclusive t-shirt, Beijing 2022 fake snow real genocide.
01:51You can buy yours at ChinaUncensored.tv slash merchandise.
01:54I'll put a link below.
01:56The best part is, the shirt is not made in China.
01:59Number 9
02:01China has put a Covid bubble around the Olympics.
02:04Anyone involved in the Games, whether they're athletes, coaches, reporters,
02:08they've all been completely cut off from the rest of society.
02:11So you get weird things like this.
02:14A bartender mixing cocktails in a full hazmat suit.
02:18I think they call that a quarantini.
02:21Robots were making burgers.
02:23That is, when they didn't break down.
02:26And of course, Olympic athletes were greeted by this friendly guy administering Covid tests.
02:31And Covid is still spreading.
02:33Remember the 2008 Beijing Olympics, when the Chinese regime was pulling out all the stops
02:38to impress the world with how amazing and wonderful it was?
02:42It feels like they're not really trying this time around.
02:45Number 8
02:46Olympic athletes need to be in top physical condition to be able to compete.
02:51And the Chinese Communist Party is making sure foreign athletes in quarantine can't do that.
02:56This is what a Russian biathlon competitor said they were feeding her.
03:01Pasta, orange sauce, meat, and potatoes.
03:04For breakfast, lunch, and dinner for five days straight.
03:08She wrote,
03:09My stomach hurts.
03:10I'm very pale and I have huge black circles around my eyes.
03:14I want all this to end.
03:16I cry every day.
03:17I'm very tired.
03:19On top of that, there's little to no internet,
03:21the rooms aren't hygienic,
03:23and there's no training equipment.
03:25But the problems for Olympic athletes were just beginning.
03:28I'll have more after the break.
03:31Welcome back.
03:33As if bad food wasn't enough,
03:35foreign Olympic athletes had much worse to deal with.
03:38Number 7
03:40As I said, China has created a Covid bubble around the Olympic Games.
03:44And Belgian skeleton racer Kim Mailemans found out the hard way what that means.
03:50She tested positive for Covid when she landed in Beijing.
03:53She was put into quarantine.
03:55After a few days, she tested negative twice,
03:58so she thought she was going to be released.
04:00An ambulance came to pick her up.
04:02Here's what happened.
04:04On the way to the village, we did not turn to the village.
04:09But the ambulance went to another facility,
04:15where I am now.
04:17So she was told she had to stay in this government facility for seven more days,
04:22with no contact with anyone.
04:24A few hours after she posted that video,
04:27Chinese authorities released her due to international pressure.
04:30But the whole thing is definitely not a great way to prepare your mind and body for the Olympics.
04:36Of course, you might now be wondering if the Chinese Communist Party
04:39might be trying to fix the Games.
04:42Well...
04:44Number 6
04:45Chinese judges are being accused of bias.
04:48A Hungarian skater crossed the finish line first in a men's speed skating event.
04:52But guess what?
04:54He was disqualified.
04:56So the Chinese runner-up took the gold.
04:59Athletes from the US and Russia also got disqualified.
05:03However, Chinese athletes were not punished.
05:06And then there was this story.
05:08Female athletes from Germany, Austria, Norway, and Japan,
05:12the four biggest ski jumping nations, were disqualified for baggy clothes.
05:18Germany called it a parody.
05:20Only no one's laughing.
05:22And after the break, things get even creepier.
05:26Welcome back.
05:28As if the starvation, harassment, and accusations of judging bias weren't enough,
05:33there are some even scarier things going on behind the scenes at the Beijing Olympics.
05:38Number 5
05:39This is Kimberly Newell.
05:40Her Chinese name is Zhou Jiayin.
05:43She's Canadian born, but has chosen to play as the goalie for China's hockey team.
05:48Now again, born and raised in Canada.
05:51She went to school at Princeton.
05:54Here's what happened when reporters tried asking her some questions.
05:58Goaltender Zhou Jiayin answered questions in halting Chinese,
06:03and was then asked by a reporter if she could take a few questions in English.
06:07Her aide then said,
06:09she's not allowed to speak English.
06:11Totally normal.
06:13Newell isn't the only foreign born athlete competing for China.
06:17There's been a lot of attention on American born skier Eileen Gu,
06:20who won gold for China.
06:22As well as American born figure skater Zhu Yi,
06:25who got a different kind of attention after she fell several times in the competition.
06:30Speaking of Chinese athletes...
06:33Number 4
06:34Peng Shuai, you remember her.
06:36She's the tennis star who accused a top Chinese Communist Party member of sexual assault.
06:42Then disappeared.
06:43And then reappeared after an international outcry,
06:46saying everything is fine.
06:48And she never claimed she was sexually assaulted.
06:51Well, she was at the Olympics.
06:54In fact, she was interviewed for the first time by an independent international media.
06:59And once again, she denied she was sexually assaulted.
07:03She also announced her retirement from tennis.
07:06And said,
07:06My life has been what it's supposed to be.
07:09Nothing special.
07:11That's a weird thing to say.
07:13And then people noticed what looked like a Chinese official watching her.
07:18Activists are warning it was basically a forced confession.
07:21No, no, it was all totally normal.
07:24Just like when Peng Shuai watched Eileen Gu win a gold medal
07:28while sitting next to the President of the IOC.
07:31While wearing extremely patriotic clothing.
07:34Everything's fine.
07:36Number 3
07:37Here's what happened to a Dutch reporter during his live shot at the Olympic opening ceremony.
07:42The International Olympic Committee said don't worry, it was just an isolated incident.
07:59The plainclothes man who pulled him off camera was wearing a red badge that read
08:03Public Safety Volunteer.
08:06The reporter had also been assigned a minder.
08:08But the Communist Party is keeping tabs on reporters in other ways, too.
08:13The Olympics app that everyone is required to download is pure spyware.
08:18But the Party knows it can get away with it.
08:20Because no one is really standing up to it.
08:23Certainly not the International Olympic Committee,
08:25which is bent over backwards to appease the regime.
08:29But there's an even more shocking way the Party is asserting itself.
08:33Number 2
08:35Everyone's been talking about the genocide of Uyghur Muslims that is happening right now
08:39while the Olympic Games are going on.
08:41Does the Chinese Communist Party care?
08:44No.
08:45In fact, during the opening ceremony, they had a Uyghur cross-country skier
08:50light the Olympic cauldron.
08:52The NBC News anchor and Olympics co-host called it a stunning decision.
08:56It's so striking and so provocative by Xi Jinping, and a real message.
09:01According to the Wall Street Journal, after lighting the Olympic cauldron,
09:04that Uyghur skier disappeared from the spotlight.
09:07She slipped away after her Olympic event, even though athletes are required
09:12to walk through an area with reporters.
09:14Perhaps China's officials didn't want foreign journalists to ask any uncomfortable questions.
09:20And finally,
09:21Number 1
09:22China expects a lot out of its Olympic athletes.
09:25And when they fail, there can be quite the backlash.
09:29As there was with Zhu Yi.
09:31Do you think the Olympics are about sportsmanship and bringing the world together?
09:35No.
09:36They're about winning gold medals for the motherland.
09:39And Chinese officials will do whatever they can for a competitive advantage.
09:43According to the South China Morning Post, China is now selecting athletes based on their DNA.
09:49And when nature can't give them an advantage, there's always nurture.
09:53Meaning rigorous training bordering on abuse.
09:57A former Chinese figure skater described the dehumanizing training abuse she suffered.
10:02She was regularly hit with a plastic skate guard after she made mistakes.
10:07And another punishment involved being kicked so hard with the toe pick of a skate
10:12that it bloodied her shin and left a lasting scar.
10:16Years ago, I did a full episode about the hard life of Chinese athletes.
10:19It's pretty unsettling, but check it out. The link is below.
10:22Now that episode was from 2013.
10:24Chinese officials claim they have made a lot of improvements in how they treat athletes now.
10:29Which may not be across the board, since the interview with that figure skater was from 2020.
10:35But you know who was instrumental in getting better treatment for Chinese athletes?
10:39It was actually Peng Shuai.
10:41Back in the mid-2000s, Peng was one of several tennis players who broke away
10:46from China's state-run training program by threatening to stop playing.
10:50At the time, players had to give more than half of their earnings to the state.
10:55And they didn't have any say in their training.
10:57Peng and the other players were given special status, allowing them to keep roughly 90% of their income,
11:03set their own schedules, and choose their coaches.
11:06That was the deal, as long as they kept winning for China.
11:10We could not do the show without your support.
11:12And to thank the fans who contribute on Patreon or Locals,
11:15I answer their questions at the end of each episode.
11:18Today's question comes from...
11:21Bitter Comments on Patreon.
11:24So realistically, how easily could the CCP utilize these athletes' DNA
11:29for purposes of genetic engineering?
11:31From what I understand, the technology isn't yet good enough to create a super soldier.
11:36Now that is a good question.
11:37I mentioned in today's episode about how China uses DNA to select athletes.
11:42But there's also been concern China will harvest the DNA data of foreign Olympic athletes.
11:47After all, they have harvested DNA data from ethnic minorities.
11:52So could China take Olympic DNA to create a super soldier?
11:56China is trying to create super soldiers.
11:59And we know the Chinese Communist Party is totally willing to do some very unethical medical things.
12:04Beyond just killing prisoners of conscience for their organs, I mean.
12:08Remember a few years ago when a Chinese researcher made those CRISPR twins?
12:12Genetically modified humans?
12:14I think if the Chinese regime sees an opportunity,
12:17they won't let medical ethics hold them back.
12:20Thank you for your question and your support, Bitter Comments.
