00:00He's conquered the baking world, and for Christmas, he's going one step further by putting his lifelike cakes up against the real thing, taking on teams who are masters at bringing Christmas to life, going head-to-head against Broadway set designers, glass blowers, animatronics experts, and toy brick builders.
00:30But they'll use whatever materials they choose, while Buddy must use cake.
00:36It's bakers versus makers, as both teams have just 24 hours.
00:41When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver them.
00:43To see who can make the most incredible holiday displays, win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing, and claim the ultimate bragging rights as...
00:52They're going down.
00:54The team who conquered Christmas.
00:56Christmas!
00:57This is Buddy versus Christmas.
01:00Merry Christmas!
01:07All right, guys.
01:08This week, we're going against David Gallo and Vivica Gardner.
01:13They do the sets for all the big productions in New York.
01:17David Gallo is a Tony and Emmy Award-winning set designer.
01:21These guys dream up things for a living, and they know how to go big.
01:25This lollipop is just an example of the many things they do.
01:30I hate that lollipop.
01:31My team for this week is my brother-in-law, Mo.
01:34Mo could build anything.
01:36Ralph, who's my head sculptor.
01:37My brother-in-law, Mauro.
01:38He's a utility man.
01:40Wherever you've got to put Mauro, he does what he's got to do.
01:42And my son, Buddy, who is a cake boss in training.
01:46For this competition, it's important to have judges that speak to all types of creative styles.
01:51Jason Chatfield and Courtney Quinn are incredible artists, and they're going to be the perfect judges for this competition.
01:57This week, the theme is Christmas extravaganza.
02:01And the special skill this week, interactivity.
02:04The interaction with cake is you eat it.
02:06Yeah.
02:07That's enough interaction.
02:08These guys are used to making interactive sets.
02:11So we're going to have to dig deep.
02:13This is not going to be a gimme by any means.
02:15What if we do, like, a Santa sleigh that you can get, you can sit in, like, you're going on a trip.
02:20We'll do some reindeer out the front.
02:22You're going to have to have people climbing in and out.
02:24I think that they're going to destroy.
02:26How about if you do, like, a giant Christmas tree?
02:28We just do, like, an eight-foot Christmas tree.
02:30Then what's, like, interactive, though?
02:31Yeah.
02:32Where's the interactive part?
02:33You know what I've been wanting to do for years?
02:36A giant gingerbread house.
02:38Oh, I love you.
02:39Like, life-size that you can walk through.
02:42I'm talking, like, we're going to dress Mauro up as Santa, and you can go on his lap and tell him what you want for Christmas.
02:50We're going to build a life-size gingerbread house, complete with sprinkle lawn, five-pound gummy bears, lollipop trees, gumdrops.
02:59This thing is going to be big enough where Mauro could fit inside and be Santa, and Mauro ain't exactly tiny.
03:07We're going to use lights.
03:08We're going to use candy.
03:09As you're walking, oh, my God, here's a five-pound gummy bear.
03:12Let me eat it.
03:12That's how we beat these guys.
03:15They got 24 hours like us.
03:17Let's go.
03:17Let's do it.
03:18Oh, God.
03:19Gingerbread.
03:20All right, so our assignment is to create a Christmas extravaganza, and you guys are the most extravaganza people that I know.
03:31One of the really exciting things about being challenged by Buddy is that he saw us as somebody that he thought could compete in his world.
03:40We've done glitzy stuff on Broadway in Las Vegas.
03:43We know glitz.
03:44Absolutely.
03:45Buddy is an artist of cake and confection, and I'm an artist of, like, sort of live performance and that sort of sense of spectacle and storytelling.
03:53You know, one day we're doing a Broadway musical, and then the next day we're dealing with puppets, and then the next day we're dealing with a rock band.
03:59So on our team is Harlan, whose specialty is fabrication, building.
04:04We have Joe, whose specialty is lighting and special effects.
04:08Steve, who is a scenic artist, does all of our painting, and Vivek's in charge of keeping the whole thing together.
04:14My idea is to build an interactive snow globe.
04:19Should I start to get scared now?
04:20No, no.
04:20We're going to get to that later.
04:22We're going to build a 16-foot-high snow globe with a turntable inside that rotates, putting a Santa sleigh on top of that.
04:29And then surrounding it with a little model of the world.
04:33So in the interactive part, it's the first thing you actually sit in the sleigh and be Santa Claus.
04:38All right.
04:38How much time do we have?
04:3924 hours.
04:41What?
04:42All right.
04:42Great.
04:43Let's start.
04:43All right, let's go.
04:44All right, let's go.
04:47Okay, that looks good.
04:48That's good.
04:49This thing is going to be big.
04:51I mean, we're going to need, like, 4,000 to 6,000 gingerbread bricks and, like, 2,000 to 4,000 circles for the roof.
04:58You take the dough.
05:00Mm-hmm.
05:00You make, like, a little ball.
05:02All right, like this.
05:03Okay.
05:05Flour.
05:06Squish it out.
05:10Take it over here.
05:12Watch out.
05:12Okay.
05:15Start with a...
05:16Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:17You hit the wrong way.
05:19I didn't hit nothing.
05:19Yeah, you did.
05:20You hit this button.
05:21I pulled it.
05:21Yeah.
05:22You got to hit this side.
05:23This, that's that way.
05:24All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right.
05:26Listen, I'm used to the old school one.
05:28Why not...
05:28I'll have another one ready by the time you're ready.
05:32I do believe the assignment was a Christmas extravaganza.
05:44Okay, but extravagant that we can do in 24 hours.
05:48We got to get the file converted, and then we've got to get it put in for CNC.
05:52So we've got a sphere made out of a series of plywood ribs.
05:56Inside of that, we're going to be attaching a clear vinyl, and it will contain the wind and
06:01the snow, and all the effects in the fog, and all of that inside of it.
06:06One of the fanciest tools that we're using in order to get this done on time is a CNC
06:11router machine.
06:13A computer runs a cutting head around it, and it will cut out even the most complex shapes.
06:18You sure you got it?
06:19I don't have it yet, but now I do.
06:21This piece will say extravaganza the moment you see it.
06:24One does not ordinarily see a snow globe that is 16 feet tall.
06:27These are half-inch plywood birch.
06:30So this stuff is going to be breaking off, like, for the next couple of days?
06:33No, no, nothing is going to break.
06:35Nothing is going to break.
06:41I'm used to making cakes, you know, with flour, yeast, eggs.
06:44This is mostly gingerbread and carpentry.
06:49Buddy went so big on this that this is only half of it.
06:52We still got to build something six foot high on top.
06:56Boom!
06:56I meant to do that.
06:57Did everybody check out our reindeer friend?
07:08Or as we say in North America, caribou?
07:11What?
07:12The only thing we keep seeing is a reindeer.
07:16Is that Buddy?
07:17It was.
07:18He's going to jump out of there.
07:20I've been trying to spy on him.
07:22I sneak a peek at that monitor every time I can, and it's that reindeer staring back at us.
07:27Do we have our monitor of what he sees?
07:29Yes, they can see us.
07:30Maybe they put that reindeer there to keep an eye on us.
07:33Good morning!
07:34Good morning!
07:35How are you guys doing?
07:36You're doing great.
07:37We're super excited to be here.
07:39Yeah, we work in a lot of different mediums, but we've never done anything out of food.
07:43I mean, it is incredible what you all do.
07:45We set up a video feed between our two teams so we can see what they're doing, and they
07:49can check on us, too.
07:50I just got to ask, why are you wearing a kilt?
07:52Why the kilt?
07:54It annoys the crap out of my children.
07:57I thought that you were trying to psych us out with the whole Braveheart thing.
08:02Did it work?
08:03Freedom will be ours.
08:04You're going to have freedom.
08:07We're going to take Christmas.
08:09Ooh!
08:11Bring it.
08:12Bring it on.
08:13Come on!
08:16We're going to texture it with a rag, we think?
08:18I think so.
08:19See, look, I make a big, puffy pad, and then I just touch.
08:23You've got to do that fast, though.
08:24That's setting up quick.
08:25Let's pop it up here.
08:27What is that?
08:28This is the motor control system that is going to make our turntable rotate, and this
08:36should hold the weight.
08:38I mean, we're going to end up putting probably 600 pounds by the time we're done with the
08:42turntable speed, lights, fans, assuming it all works, we're going to plug it in.
08:49It looked like it was steeper.
08:51Now that we just finished the bottom half of the structure.
08:54I don't understand.
08:55We're shy like three feet.
08:57Here we go.
08:58First problem of the day.
09:01We're trying to figure out the pitch of the roof, and doing it in this room is not good
09:06because we don't have enough room.
09:08It's about 13 feet.
09:09The decorator room is like 14 feet.
09:11Yeah?
09:12It's taller than here.
09:13There's no book to build a giant gingerbread house.
09:17We make it up as we go along.
09:19Okay, we're going to bring the house in.
09:20Ooh!
09:22Well, good thing we made it exactly the same size as the hallway.
09:25We cannot put the house together in the bakery because the ceilings are not tall enough.
09:33So we have to do it in two separate pieces and hope that it's going to marry together well.
09:39This is bananas, you guys.
09:44This is absolutely bonkers.
09:47Pretty big.
09:48I have a little ground plan here set up of our actual snow globe showing the eight lights that we're going to use.
09:55Cool.
09:55And obviously these will be on the turntable, so they'll be moving around, which gives a little more complication to how we program it, but it'll make it fun.
10:02Oh, the lights on your board are turning the color of the lights on the ceiling.
10:05So we have red and green here, and that's what they're doing in real life.
10:10It's not going to be that many bricks.
10:12No, we're almost done already.
10:14Look.
10:14These are gingerbread bricks, and we're going to place them on the gingerbread house with royal icing, and it's going to be how you, like, basically brick a house.
10:26I'm making the royal icing, which is basically the glue that's going to hold this house together.
10:32It's like baker's concrete.
10:34I mean, we're definitely at a little disadvantage.
10:36We have to do everything edible, where these guys, if they want concrete, they can use concrete.
10:42Touching or a little gap?
10:43A little gap.
10:44A little closer.
10:45I just don't want these things to sink.
10:48Yeah, these aren't going anywhere.
10:49You know what I'm trying to say?
10:50Gravity is going to push those things down.
10:54Oh, this one's falling.
10:56Why am I two inches short?
10:59It's got to be flush with the wood.
11:00Okay.
11:01Can you flush up a little bit?
11:02You want a hammer?
11:03Oh, oh, oh.
11:04Yes, you won't fall.
11:05Oh, oh, oh, oh.
11:06Why am I two inches short?
11:15It's got to be flush with the wood.
11:17Can you flush up a little bit?
11:19You want a hammer?
11:19Oh, oh.
11:20Yes, you won't fall.
11:21Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
11:22Yes.
11:24Oh.
11:26I'm going to move for a minute.
11:28I almost took my head off.
11:32All hands on deck.
11:33We got a rib coming in.
11:35All right.
11:35And that's this one.
11:36Time for ribbage.
11:37So we're building the world's largest snow globe.
11:40And an incredibly important element of that is these large, heavy ribs that we have to
11:45install like a house of cards.
11:48Yeah.
11:48Some of the major issues we want to be aware of, death, destruction.
11:53More importantly than that, don't break any of the decor.
11:56If you find yourself falling, just don't grab it.
11:59You can be replaced.
12:00This cannot.
12:01Perfect.
12:02So here's the hard part.
12:03Be mucho careful.
12:05I've got it.
12:06I've got this.
12:06All right.
12:07All right.
12:08I'm where I am.
12:09Okay, I'm losing the bottom.
12:10David, come to me.
12:11Come to me.
12:12You're taking the other side across from me so that we're staying straight up, which we
12:15are not right now.
12:16Okay?
12:17Swing around to there.
12:18Okay, wait, wait.
12:19I think I'm going to knock Joe off the wire.
12:20Hold on.
12:20Joe's got to get a position.
12:22There we go.
12:22Watch the back.
12:23Yeah, please don't knock me off.
12:24No, we need Joe.
12:25Okay.
12:26Jesus.
12:26Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop.
12:28Wow.
12:28Okay.
12:29Are you okay?
12:29No.
12:30Okay.
12:30Damn.
12:31You wanted them bigger.
12:33I always want everything bigger.
12:34Yeah, this is all your fault, really.
12:35All right.
12:36Okay, there.
12:36There we go.
12:37Yeah.
12:40Oh, wow.
12:41That's pretty cool.
12:42Look at all this stuff thing are going on there.
12:44That's some nice detail on that wood there.
12:46That's pretty cool.
12:47I wonder if they're cutting that with a CNC machine or doing that by hand.
12:50Yeah, they got a CNC machine.
12:52Hello.
12:53Hey.
12:53How are you guys making out?
12:54So far, so good.
12:55We've made an awful lot of sawdust this morning.
12:57Are you cutting them with jigsaws or with a CNC machine?
13:00Everything we did was with a CNC.
13:02That's why we were able to do everything so quickly.
13:04You want to see my CNC machine?
13:06Here it is.
13:07Here's my machine.
13:08Hey.
13:09How big is your gingerbread house going to be?
13:11It should be about 12, 15 foot tall.
13:14Uh-oh.
13:14We're going to have a race for the tallest.
13:17How tall is the globe going to be?
13:19Whatever number you give me, I'm going to go higher.
13:21Uh-oh.
13:21I like that.
13:22I like that.
13:25Nobody's going to see that.
13:26This is rough framing.
13:28Do you have something to do?
13:30We're at that point in the day where we're completely running out of time and everybody is stressed.
13:35Just give me the measurement.
13:36An inch by whatever.
13:37This is an eighth off.
13:38We're doing rough framing.
13:39We ain't doing trim press and press.
13:41You're ruining my Christmas spirit.
13:43I got splinters.
13:46You're going to do the inside, Ralph?
13:47Inside.
13:48Let's go.
13:49It dices.
13:50It slices.
13:51It's a paper cutter.
13:53This gingerbread is baked, honestly, to perfection.
13:56Because it's got a little elasticity to it, but it's together.
14:00Oh.
14:01This gingerbread house is gigantic.
14:04The challenge is going to be that there's a lot of repetitious work on this.
14:08Now that there's no going back, I feel safe telling you this.
14:12We went too big.
14:13Like, we could have done less.
14:17That's who we are, Ralph.
14:19It's in our DNA to go big.
14:21I know that this is tough.
14:23I know that it seems unrealistic.
14:25But when we're done, it's going to be ho, ho, ho.
14:30I'm going to be so happy when I don't have to put gingerbread bricks on things anymore.
14:34There's a lot of work here.
14:36I mean, we have thousands of bricks to collect.
14:38Thousands of shingles to put on the roof.
14:41Well, it's kind of like Santa Claus.
14:43When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
14:46You've got to look at the positives always, Ralph.
14:48I prefer not to.
14:49I like complaining.
14:50It makes me happy.
14:51All right, now Harlan and I are going to go inside.
14:56Like, as I say, as a designer, turntables have caused more trouble than any other thing.
15:01I'm just afraid I'm going to lose my hand.
15:03Drop your fingers in.
15:04Put it in.
15:06Harlan?
15:07Look at that.
15:08So you added a motor so that we can have it turn automatically with someone on it?
15:12Correct.
15:13We figured out actually how to make the deck turn.
15:15Because I was like, eh, we're going to have to get, like, a person inside.
15:19And they're going to, like, do one of these things.
15:21How are we going to run the cord out without the cord circling the motor in the center?
15:25All the electronics can't keep winding up without unwinding.
15:31If the turntable continues to turn in one direction, those cables are going to wind around it.
15:36And they can spark and cause a fire.
15:38I don't know the answer to that question.
15:41Well, we were wondering what we were going to do with all our extra time.
15:45Yeah.
15:51It's getting, getting, it's like wrenching under a car.
16:00This turntable of hell.
16:04The wire management thing.
16:05It's a huge problem.
16:08Am I going to be able to take this?
16:09I'm touching the paint.
16:11The turntable is an essential piece of what it is that we're creating.
16:15And it's not just to turn Santa's sleigh around.
16:17We have a huge amount of equipment on top of this thing.
16:21Pull it up.
16:21Keep going.
16:22No, we're not making pizzas.
16:25Everything has so many details that you have to think about.
16:29One little thing like that, like a cable, gets in the way.
16:32Because now the wheels that have to travel around, now there's a cable.
16:36I bet you there's a way to program this where it just does a full rotation, stops, and goes back.
16:42Harlan figured out a way that we could add a sensor that will tell the turntable when it's made a full rotation.
16:47So it will stop.
16:48It won't allow the cables to keep wrapping up.
16:51And then it'll unwind in the other direction.
16:53It should stop.
16:54And then it should go back around.
17:00Hey.
17:00Hey.
17:04Hey.
17:04Hey.
17:07Bud, stop eating the candy.
17:10Come on.
17:13I am making gumdrop pom-pom bushes.
17:16We have to put all the toporaries around.
17:19I think it's going to look adorable.
17:20Go get the circle cutters.
17:22Look.
17:23If you, uh, you could do it, or you could just do it with an exacto.
17:26If you cut a circle, it's going to be, would you listen to me?
17:30And don't question everything I tell you.
17:32Say, okay, dad.
17:32I'm kidding with you.
17:34Trying to teach my son how to work with me and what we do.
17:38He doesn't always listen to everything that I say, but I actually respect the fact that he questions it because his mind is thinking.
17:45What pattern are you doing?
17:48Like certain colors?
17:49I'm trying to mix it up.
17:50La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
17:52La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
17:56All right.
17:56I've got to go find Santa's sleigh.
17:58Deep in this warehouse, we have Santa's sleigh.
18:01And we're certain with that, that we're going to be able to beat Buddy.
18:05Um, let me see.
18:09This is a giant jack that I made for a kids show.
18:14Wow.
18:17It's a big throne.
18:19I don't think I'm allowed to say what show it's from, but the guy wears a mask.
18:23There's very few things in my job that are more fun than wandering through these warehouses and seeing all of these just wonderful objects from different productions.
18:34A wall of skulls.
18:36That's from a vampire musical that did not turn out well.
18:40Hey!
18:41How about, oh, look, this one's already got flames.
18:44These incredible warehouses just filled to the brim with all kinds of curiosities and interesting things.
18:51Ooh!
18:52That is Christmas.
18:57When we were doing the walls, we just placed the gingerbread bricks on the wall and cut them so they fit evenly.
19:04But now we have to overlay a shingle on top of a shingle so it makes a nice formation.
19:08And it takes a lot more time and you got to do a lot more work for it.
19:12Well, some of these are oval, some of them are round.
19:14I know.
19:15Yeah, it's not exact science we're doing here.
19:18But it's looking good.
19:20Working with a shingle that's exactly 16 by 24 is one thing.
19:24I'm working with round cookies.
19:27I'm a little bit different.
19:29Little bit.
19:38Oh, my God.
19:40Oh, my God.
19:43What?
19:44What is that?
19:49Santa's come early.
19:51My inspiration is to capture a moment that I've dreamed about ever since I was a little child.
19:55What is it like to fly over the world with a bag full of presents and only the reindeer to keep you company?
20:00What is it like to have the snow in your face?
20:02We are creating the interactive element by putting the judges right in the middle of the action.
20:07Who wouldn't want to take a ride in Santa's sleigh?
20:10We got to fix some of the damage.
20:12Yeah, I need a little love.
20:13Santa had too much eggnog.
20:15A little too much eggnog.
20:17Hey, buddy.
20:17Check it.
20:18We have a sleigh.
20:19You got a sleigh?
20:20Hey, guys.
20:24There's gingerbread.
20:25Wow.
20:26That is great.
20:27Brick by brick by brick.
20:29How do you like my bricklaying skills?
20:30Looks really fantastic.
20:32How are you guys making out?
20:33We're doing very, very well, actually.
20:35We have managed to put our structure together.
20:36How are the theater kids doing with their arts and crafts project?
20:39Hey, what is this guy with the kilt?
20:42Oh, this old thing?
20:44Oh, you know, just something I've had lying around.
20:46They're going to think I'm you and you're me.
20:49Oh, are you wearing one too?
20:51Merry Christmas.
20:53Hey, guys, we got to work harder.
20:56This is gorgeous.
20:57His work is amazing.
20:58It's going to be the greatest gingerbread house.
21:00It's going to be an absolute work of art by a true master and his people.
21:05Then he's going to lose.
21:06Okay, so let me get down.
21:07I'm going to need someone to hold this steady.
21:10You see how it's wobbling?
21:11I'm right on my shoulder.
21:12I got it.
21:12I got it.
21:13Go on his shoulder.
21:13Go on my shoulder.
21:15Dude, it's not going to work.
21:17Let me just do it.
21:18No, stop.
21:19Stop.
21:19No.
21:21Let me go.
21:22Let me go.
21:24Just hug your father.
21:26I got you.
21:28I saved you, son.
21:30I saved you.
21:32All right, I'll put him in a sec.
21:35You goofballs.
21:36Let's finish this.
21:37Right now, my sleigh is beautiful, but it is lacking in charm.
21:45So I'm going to see what I can do about adding charm and adding pizzazz, adding razzle-dazzle.
21:55I know exactly what to do.
21:56We got to sand his bag.
22:06Okay.
22:07It might be made out of junk from upstairs in the, like, dirty prop room, but it's not too bad.
22:15All right, so now this has got to be filled with toys, and I cut these chunks of foam into squares and rectangles.
22:23And then I've started using them to create presents, right?
22:29So I got all these wonderful ribbons.
22:31I found a box that's Christmas ribbons.
22:33This is the razzle-dazzle of show business, making something out of nothing.
22:36How do you like my wreath?
22:42Oh, that actually does not look like a tire anymore.
22:44It looks pretty cool.
22:46Oh, I said it looks good.
22:48Why didn't they call me the cake man?
22:49So I'm going to outline the legs.
22:53I'm going to outline up.
22:54I'll do the whole trip.
22:55I think that's the thing to do.
22:57Come on, we got to hurry.
22:59Okay.
23:00You know what, though?
23:01As massive as theirs looks in the TV...
23:04Ours is going to be bigger.
23:05I think ours is going to be a bigger statement.
23:08We're going to win!
23:10Merry Christmas!
23:12Uh-oh.
23:12Big problem.
23:14This is messed up.
23:19Push the cookies back up and everything's going to be fine.
23:26Oh, wow.
23:27That slid down all the way to here.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Just push them up.
23:31No, they're going to fall right back down, probably.
23:34You don't think it's going to fall again?
23:35Well...
23:41These shingles, if they start sliding with the judges and judging the cake,
23:46we ain't going to win.
23:48You want more icing?
23:50No.
24:00Uh-oh.
24:01Big problem.
24:04You're going to push the cookies back up and everything's going to be fine.
24:07You don't think it's going to fall again?
24:10You really got to press them down.
24:11You can't just place them.
24:13Oh, yeah.
24:13These are very loose.
24:14Yeah, give them all a good push.
24:16This is a giant, life-size gingerbread house,
24:21and there's probably like 2,000 to 4,000 roof shingles.
24:27And they shifted.
24:29I don't really have a lot of time to recover.
24:32Just let's put a couple snow piles.
24:35Yep.
24:36And then the roof is done.
24:37Christmas, Christmas, la, la, la.
24:39Moldy old baloney.
24:41Hey, don't forget your old shipmates and a happy new year.
24:45Guys, come on.
24:46We got to move.
24:47We're not even going to finish this today.
24:48Listen to Mauro.
24:50It's so weird to, like, draw this stuff with a pencil and then have a robot cut it out.
24:56One of our important elements is the ground row around the bottom.
25:01A ground row is a two-dimensional cutout out of plywood or some other flexible material that represents the buildings and all of the different landmarks of the world.
25:10Every single structure has a chimney.
25:12Huh.
25:13The George Washington Bridge, the Taj Mahal has a chimney because Santa Claus is coming to town.
25:24It's a lot of piping, but that's really what's going to differentiate and to make it look awesome.
25:30No mold, no CNC machines.
25:32Old school, baby.
25:33Are we actually closing in on the end of this?
25:38Oh, the fence.
25:41The fence.
25:42I haven't even thought about the fence yet.
25:45Besides the fact that this is going to be three trucks full and we have to drive it an hour away, take it all out of the truck, assemble it, and I'm going nuts.
25:54The good news is every single piece for this cake is almost done.
26:00The bad news is every single piece for this cake is just almost done.
26:05You need something, like, right here in the middle to start it off.
26:08Hey, Mauro.
26:08Yo.
26:09We take some PVC pipe, we wrap it in this red electrical tape.
26:14Looks like a candy cane, no?
26:16Yeah.
26:19Hey, buddy, you there?
26:22Buddy.
26:22You guys see a cake, boss?
26:26They're so busy, they can't talk to me.
26:30Hey, hey, David.
26:31I'm bringing a forklift, because there's no way we're going to pick this roof up and put it on top of that house.
26:37So if you need one, we'll be there.
26:39Okay, you bring the forklift.
26:40How are you guys making out?
26:42Taking care of business.
26:43Us too.
26:44We'll see you there.
26:45We will see you there.
26:47All right, we're going to turn off the monitor.
26:49At this point, we're turning off the monitors because we want the final project to be a surprise.
26:55I want to sparkle all over Buddy's cake.
26:58I want Buddy blinded by bling.
27:02I think that we have a really beautiful thing.
27:04Right here, right?
27:06That's pretty cool.
27:07I like that.
27:07Let's try this.
27:08We're scrambling a little bit to get it into a final shape, but I think that we're going to be able to beat Buddy.
27:13We can't use the sewing machine because it doesn't go up, it goes down.
27:15We need it to blow up.
27:17Buddy's such a master that we really wanted to pull out all the stops, show off everything we can do.
27:22But we have to be realistic.
27:25Plug it in.
27:26I got to move.
27:27This is a lot to pull off in this amount of time.
27:29And that's the real challenge here is the time pressure.
27:35Ready?
27:37Hey, guys, guys, guys.
27:39Time's up.
27:40All right?
27:40What?
27:41We're not done.
27:41Listen, whatever we have to do now, we got to do in the theater.
27:44All right.
27:44There's a lot to do still.
27:45Let's get this thing taken apart and put on the truck right away.
27:52This is what I'm going to do there.
27:55This is done.
27:56The top I'm going to do there.
27:57Where are the last two of the bread?
27:58That's about done.
28:01Listen, nothing looks as gingerbread house as gumdrops.
28:05Okay?
28:06Make sure they're nice and good and even.
28:10That is awesome.
28:12The candy mortar is cool.
28:14Holy cow.
28:15Look at what we did.
28:16This is definitely...
28:18Everybody, come on in here.
28:21Big group.
28:22This isn't a hug.
28:23I just need you to hold me up.
28:24This is one of the most incredible builds we ever did.
28:28And I know that we're tired, but I promise you, when we put this together and we step back
28:33there, this is going to be a cake we'll never forget.
28:35I just got to say, I couldn't be prouder of the team.
28:37Let's get it to the place.
28:39We still got a lot of work.
28:40Who are you people?
28:41Let's rock and roll.
28:42Let's rock and roll.
28:43Both teams agreed to do our finishing touches in under two hours.
28:47All right, let's go.
28:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.
28:49Let's go.
28:50There it is.
28:52So we get to the theater.
28:54Our first job is to figure out where the turntable goes, lay it down, and make sure that it's
29:00working properly.
29:01Then we build the rest of the entire snow globe, all the effects and lights on top of
29:05that.
29:06Our real priority is loading in and getting the turntable to turn.
29:11We're delivering to the centenary stage at the Lackland Performing Arts Center.
29:16Straight, straight back.
29:18Marito, don't stand back there.
29:20What's the goal for this to be very scary?
29:23Lights, curtains, and a big stage.
29:26It's perfect for a theme, Christmas extravaganza, and a special skill set, interactivity.
29:33You ready for the test?
29:34Here goes nothing.
29:35Ladies and gentlemen, Harlan and Joe.
29:40Hold on.
29:41I want to make sure it does what it's supposed to.
29:43If it stops, then starts and goes back the other way, then we can celebrate.
29:49Ooh.
29:51Now's the last that they heard.
29:53Here you go.
29:53Of Buddy.
29:54I'm ahead in the end, right?
30:01No, you're good.
30:01The good news is we only lost about 600 gumdrops.
30:04That's all right.
30:05Gumdrops, we have thousands of.
30:07You know, there's a brief second when you're pushing this house down the hallway and you're
30:11like, maybe I could have made it a little smaller.
30:14Oh, you hear the floor?
30:15I know we got a 10,000-pound forklift, but do we have a 10,000-pound floor?
30:19Team Gallo builds sets for a living.
30:22We're bakers, not set builders.
30:24That could be our downfall.
30:26Please don't fall on me.
30:27Please don't fall on me.
30:28Keep going.
30:30Whoa.
30:30Okay.
30:31Oh, God.
30:32So many pieces.
30:35The turntable is working.
30:37We're thrilled.
30:37Now, we're going to have to face the things that we didn't get a chance to do in the shop
30:45while we were working on the turntable.
30:47Filling it with snow and creating a ride for Santa.
30:50Woo!
30:51Santa just popped a wheelie.
30:53Buddy, just be careful when you're lifting with the door overhead.
30:57I see.
30:59Holy cow.
31:00Come forward about a foot if you wanted to.
31:04Okay.
31:04Stop.
31:04Okay.
31:05Wait.
31:05Woo!
31:06Holy cow.
31:10It's going to line up perfectly.
31:12It's got to go left or right?
31:13You're pretty centered.
31:14This looks crazy.
31:15I can't believe we did this, you guys.
31:18Now, let's finish.
31:19I think every cake decorator needs a forklift.
31:22Push it a little rough.
31:23I got you.
31:23Hold it from the bottom.
31:24Of course.
31:24We're building cakes.
31:25We need forklifts.
31:28Holy mackerel.
31:29Look at that.
31:30Oh, whoa.
31:30They got, like, giant candy.
31:32Oh!
31:33Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
31:35How's it going?
31:36You guys need help?
31:37All right.
31:38Yeah, we're getting there.
31:40I'm sorry.
31:40I'll leave you alone.
31:41I'm sorry.
31:41I'm sorry.
31:42You guys look like you're behind.
31:44Just let them work.
31:46I'm going to need more snow.
32:00I've been inside the globe for a lot of time, gluing little details in, making embellishments.
32:05Yep.
32:05All right, hand me China.
32:06I have Jeremy.
32:08I'm always adding more and more, more detail, more glitz, more whatever it is.
32:11And while inside the turntable, it's really tight in there.
32:15Oh, no.
32:16Oh, no way.
32:18Oh, did I break the turntable?
32:20Oh, no.
32:21Yeah.
32:22While I was inside the piece adding a lot of these details, I accidentally dropped a tool
32:26down in between where the wheels go and jammed the entire thing up.
32:30You can't make this up.
32:33No more turntable.
32:34No more turntable.
32:36No.
32:37No.
32:38No.
32:39No.
32:39No.
32:40No.
32:40No.
32:40No.
32:40No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:41No.
32:46We've got to finish the gingerbread outs.
32:48Sprinkles.
32:49Sprinkles!
32:50Elevator up.
32:53We're down to the wire here.
32:55We have to put all the finishing details.
32:57There's still a lot of things that's got to happen to make this all come together.
33:02Up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
33:05That's good.
33:06They're going to have to hang me over the house.
33:09And I'm just going to put my arm on and pipe.
33:11Okay.
33:11I'm going to need another bag in a second.
33:13I'm going to need another bag in a second to be ready to throw me one.
33:17And as I'm putting it, you can see, it's really coming to life.
33:23Let us know!
33:24We planned a lot of this around the turntable.
33:25We planned a lot of this around the turntable.
33:27We planned everything around the turntable.
33:29We planned everything around the turntable.
33:31Hey, Joe!
33:32What?
33:33When do we see the donut light up?
33:35As soon as you guys get the hell out of there, we're out of there.
33:39We never placed blame.
33:40We just moved forward.
33:41We're not going to say who broke the turntable.
33:43We broke the turntable.
33:44But it rhymes with Mavid Shmallow.
33:47We destroyed it.
33:49So, listen.
33:50We've been peeking through the curtain and seeing what he's got going on, and it's a beautiful
33:54thing.
33:55We decided to show him what we got.
33:56Because this looks rad.
33:57Yeah.
33:58We all believe that the show must go on.
34:00All right.
34:01We're going to put the moose on the left side there.
34:03Turn him a little more.
34:04Turn him a little more.
34:05Other way.
34:06Other way.
34:07Other way.
34:08That's good.
34:09We've seen the fog machines work?
34:10Okay.
34:11Let's see the fog machines work.
34:12I would rather the fog machines work than the mirror wall.
34:14Seriously.
34:15For the fence, watch this tree.
34:18Here we go.
34:20Perfect.
34:21Time's up.
34:25Time's up.
34:26We're done.
34:29When you have to do something creative, it's almost like driving with one eye.
34:35You really have to trust what you did is going to work.
34:41Jason Chatfield and Courtney Quinn are incredible artists, and they're going to be the perfect
34:45judges for this competition.
34:47Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
34:49She's worked for some of the biggest fashion brands on the planet.
34:53Jason Chatfield is a cartoonist and a comedian based in New York City.
34:57Jason's work has been published everywhere from the New Yorker to Mad Magazine.
35:02Team Buddy.
35:05Team Gallo.
35:07The theme for this competition was Christmas extravaganza.
35:12The finished pieces had to not only have something that was spectacular, but something that was interactive.
35:18You guys created something so big it can barely even be contained by our curtains.
35:25All right, Team Buddy.
35:26Let's see your work.
35:27You guys ready?
35:29Merry Christmas!
35:31Woo!
35:32Yeah!
35:33Oh, my God!
35:34Ho, ho, ho!
35:35Merry Christmas, everybody!
35:36Oh, we got Santa!
35:38Wow!
35:39It looks amazing!
35:40Oh, and this is edible!
35:41You could dive into sprinkles if you want.
35:42I can smell it from here.
35:43Yeah, you can smell that ginger.
35:44Yeah!
35:45Fresh.
35:46It smells like Christmas.
35:47This is incredible.
35:48You guys have completely outdone yourself.
35:49This is one of the biggest things you've ever done, right?
35:50I would put it on my top five.
35:51This is amazing.
35:52Buddy, thank you.
35:53Team Gala, what have you made for us?
35:54All right, it's showtime, folks!
35:58Oh!
35:59Whoa!
36:00Whoa!
36:01Whoa!
36:02Whoa!
36:03Whoa!
36:04Whoa!
36:05Whoa!
36:06Whoa!
36:07Whoa!
36:08Whoa!
36:09Whoa!
36:10Whoa!
36:11Whoa!
36:12Whoa!
36:13Whoa!
36:14Whoa!
36:15Whoa!
36:16Whoa!
36:17Whoa!
36:18Whoa!
36:19Whoa!
36:20Whoa!
36:21Whoa!
36:22Whoa!
36:23Whoa!
36:24Whoa!
36:25Whoa!
36:26Whoa!
36:27Whoa!
36:28Whoa!
36:29Whoa!
36:29Whoa!
36:30Whoa!
36:31Whoa!
36:32Whoa!
36:33Whoa!
36:34Whoa!
36:35Whoa!
36:36Whoa!
36:37What?
36:38Whoa!
36:39It's a full snow globe.
36:40There's snow in there.
36:41We asked you to go big and you went bigger!
36:45Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
36:47That's always been my motto.
36:48I wanted to show Santa flying around the world, bringing joy and toys and happiness to everybody in the world.
36:56Paris and London, New York City and the Chrysler Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, New Jersey.
37:01Hey, all right.
37:04Does it spin?
37:06It, it, okay, well, there's a very sad and tragic story about the spin.
37:10Santa had spent a tremendous amount of time making it go round and round, and then I broke it.
37:16You're on the naughty list for sure.
37:17I'm definitely on the naughty list, but you can take a ride on it and experience Santa's journey.
37:23I want to do that.
37:25All right, let's take a closer look.
37:27Let's do it.
37:29Wow.
37:30That is one hell of a chimney.
37:32I know, it's giant.
37:34I love the colors.
37:36They've really stuck to the traditional color scheme.
37:38For sure.
37:39Oh, my God.
37:40They're real gummy bears.
37:42They're giant.
37:42And it's delicious.
37:43There's nothing more interactive than having the art in my tummy.
37:48Hi, Santa.
37:49Welcome to Santa's house.
37:50Can I sit on your lap?
37:51Of course.
37:52You've been naughty or nice?
37:55I've been naughty, but I'm willing to learn.
37:57What would you like for Chris?
37:58Tell me.
37:58Can I have this?
37:59Yeah, we can rent this out as a small little one-bedroom condo.
38:02I'm just blown away.
38:07The bling factor, the lights, the razzle-dazzle.
38:11But you know what I love?
38:12I love this story.
38:13Christmas Eve and flying through the blizzard.
38:16We wanted to represent the whole planet all the way around the world.
38:20This was a hard year.
38:22It was the first time that everybody in the world was going through something together.
38:26What happened this year is, like, something we've never seen before, and it happened to
38:31all of us.
38:32It happened to all of us.
38:33We wanted to bring that in and bring back joy.
38:35After you said that, I just want you guys to win.
38:37So bad.
38:39I really do.
38:40So do we.
38:41All right.
38:42Can I go in?
38:43Yeah.
38:46Hey, it's me in the rearview mirror.
38:49Ah, that's not funny.
38:51Oh!
38:51Oh!
38:52This is amazing.
38:55You guys really nailed the proportions.
38:59That is fantastic.
39:00The arch is fantastic.
39:02The circular window, really, really stunning.
39:04It's adorable.
39:05You gotta go in and check it out.
39:08Oh, my God.
39:09I love gingerbread.
39:10Now here's your Christmas card.
39:13I got it.
39:16Team Buddy, you really impressed us with your size and your scale.
39:21But also the attention to details.
39:24One thing I would have loved to see is if you would sub the PVC pipe with something edible.
39:29Buddy, I literally got goosebumps when I saw this thing.
39:33But I have to say, I would have loved more of a wow moment after the curtain drop.
39:38Maybe something coming out of the chimney or Santa doing something.
39:42But fantastic work, Team Buddy.
39:44Fantastic.
39:44Thank you very much.
39:45Team Gallo.
39:46If Team Buddy says Christmas, yours screams it through a megaphone in four-part harmony.
39:52I'm usually fairly understated.
39:55I can tell from the jacket.
39:57But I have to tell you, when I was in this sled, I really thought, oh, boy, I'd love this thing to move.
40:04I have to tell you, growing up, I had this childhood dream of being inside a snow globe.
40:13So thank you for bringing this dream that you didn't know I had to life.
40:17We're in the bringing your dreams to life business.
40:19Both of us.
40:20Amen.
40:21Buddy's piece is spectacular.
40:24It's gorgeous.
40:25And I got to say, I feel a little bit nervous.
40:27When I see David's design, I'm for it.
40:29Maybe we didn't go big enough.
40:31We have to pick a winner.
40:33So the team who conquered Christmas is Team Buddy.
40:52Your prize of $5,000 will be donated to the Bindle Stiff Family Variety Arts to support the arts.
40:59If you want a rematch next year, we're down.
41:01I think you would take us out.
41:03Are you going to chicken out now?
41:04I might chicken it out.
41:05We were just thrilled to be a part of this competition.
41:08And if you want to do a rematch, just try us on Halloween.
41:12This was a lot, a lot of fun.
41:14And to have my son there with me on this, like, epic cake build, I'm so proud of this moment.
41:24Glass blowing can be dangerous.
41:26My hand is burning up.
41:27Keep going.
41:28Next time.
41:30We're going up against the world-renowned glass blower.
41:34Now it's getting out of control.
41:35What's wrong?
41:36It's flighting.
41:37Amazing.
41:38Our biggest enemy is going to be gravity here.
41:40He's upside down.
41:41Whoops.
41:41I broke a star.
41:43I didn't break it, you did.
41:45It's not real.
41:46What's the thing?
41:47What's the thing?
41:48Ah!
41:49Ha ha!
41:50Ah!
41:51Ah!
