00:00He's conquered the baking world, and for Christmas, he's going one step further by putting his lifelike cakes up against the real things, taking on teams who are masters at bringing Christmas to life, going head-to-head against Broadway set designers, glassblowers, animatronics experts, and toy brick builders.
00:30But they'll use whatever materials they choose, while Buddy must use cake.
00:36It's bakers versus makers, as both teams have just 24 hours.
00:41When it's Christmas Eve, you've got to deliver.
00:43To see who can make the most incredible holiday displays, win $5,000 for a charity of their choosing, and claim the ultimate bragging rights as...
00:52They're going down.
00:54The team who conquered Christmas.
00:56Christmas!
00:57This is Buddy vs. Christmas.
01:00Merry Christmas!
01:08All right, guys.
01:09This week, the theme is toys.
01:11Okay.
01:11And the special skill set is originality.
01:15Originality.
01:16Original.
01:16Original.
01:17Like me.
01:18Aren't you the second, Buddy?
01:19That's your dad.
01:20Yeah, my dad was the old Jake.
01:21I'm the third.
01:22You're the second.
01:23All right.
01:24So we're looking outside of you guys for originality as well.
01:27So our judges this week are Courtney Quinn and Jason Chatfield.
01:32Jason Chatfield is a cartoonist.
01:35And Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
01:37They're both incredible artists, and they're going to be the perfect judges for this competition.
01:41Our competitors are Corey and Travis.
01:43And they're Lego artists.
01:44These guys make sculptures and buildings and all kinds of stuff out of Lego bricks.
01:50They've turned their childhood hobby into their life's work.
01:54They turned toys into magic.
01:56The cool thing about what they're doing is their medium is a toy.
02:01We have to go as hard as we can, otherwise we're going to lose this.
02:05I think the one advantage we've obviously got is we can go faster.
02:09Their stuff is magnificent, but it's tedious and small.
02:13And we put more like, uh, like movement in it.
02:16Their stuff is more static than ours.
02:18Right, son.
02:19They have no movement.
02:20I'm very handsome.
02:22I don't know if that helps us, but...
02:23Yeah, very nice.
02:24I like it.
02:25So this week, my team is Ralph.
02:28Ralph is an amazing sculptor.
02:31Becky, she's an amazing cake artist, sculptor, everything.
02:35Moe is really good in mechanics and engineering and building.
02:40And my son, Buddy, did so well on the gingerbread challenge,
02:43I decided to bring him back for another one.
02:45Why don't we get the whiteboard in,
02:47and let's figure out what we're going to make here.
02:49What about one big...
02:50What kind of toys are there that we can scale up in?
02:53It'll be really awesome.
02:54What about like a giant jack-in-a-box?
02:58What about like a big, uh, like a big Christmas teddy bear?
03:01Big, big, though, like eight feet tall.
03:03Teddy bears, when I hear that big,
03:05almost seem a little creepy to me.
03:07Oh, but a jack-in-the-box won't.
03:09How about Santa's sleigh with toys hanging out the back?
03:12Okay, how about this?
03:13What if you do like a hybrid kind of thing?
03:14Like, it's kind of like a sleigh race car.
03:16Like a half-and-half.
03:18It's a sleigh in the back, but it's the car in the front,
03:21and then you have the big bag of toys,
03:23and you do all the toys coming out of it,
03:25and you can get your jack-in-the-box.
03:27I like this idea.
03:28What do you guys think?
03:29I like it.
03:29I think it's fun.
03:30It's not just, like, one toy.
03:32Yeah, that's exactly it.
03:33It's a toy with toys.
03:35Our design is going to be a rocket-powered sleigh
03:38that delivers toys to all the good boys and girls
03:41during Christmas.
03:42The back of my sleigh is going to have a bag
03:46made out of cake, overflowing with toys.
03:49And, of course, we're going to dress my son Buddy Jr.
03:51as Buddy the Elf driver.
03:54Well, you work on the little toys,
03:56and us three will start constructing the frame.
03:59For the cake, sure.
04:00We're going to beat these brick builders or what?
04:02Let's hit it.
04:02All right, let's go.
04:04Let's do this.
04:05Fellas, our challenge is to make the ultimate Christmas tour.
04:10My name is Corey Samuels.
04:12And I'm Travis Samuels.
04:13And we're the Bricko Bros.
04:14On our team, we have the best brick builders in all the land.
04:21Number one, we have Mel.
04:22Mel is our time check guy and our accountability guy.
04:26Manny is the one with the big ambition and the big ideas.
04:29Jermaine, that's our mathematician.
04:31He's counting the bricks.
04:32We're unstoppable.
04:33Nailed it.
04:35Christmas is for the kids, right?
04:37Yes.
04:37And kids love toys.
04:39Yes.
04:39So we got to build the ultimate toy
04:41that no one has ever seen before.
04:43Woo!
04:43When I was six years old,
04:45I was diagnosed with acute leukemia.
04:47And it was hard,
04:49but I was given a lot of these bricks
04:50from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
04:52Building literally became my playground.
04:54And we did a lot of that time together.
04:56I had to figure out a way
04:57that I could still be there for him.
04:59We would spend hours just playing on the floor with Lego bricks.
05:02It really helped during that rough time in our lives.
05:0525 years later, we're here still playing with bricks.
05:08What's the type of toy you see under the tree
05:10that you're going to run straight to?
05:11One of my favorite ones was, like,
05:13these robots that would, like, transform into stuff.
05:16You know what I mean?
05:16I dig it.
05:17I dig it.
05:17Robots.
05:17All right.
05:18Okay.
05:18Yeah.
05:19We can make something, like, big, right?
05:21Yeah.
05:21Something like ultra.
05:23Follow me.
05:23Okay.
05:25Action.
05:25Okay.
05:25Hero.
05:28Ultra.
05:29Bot.
05:30Yeah.
05:30I like that.
05:31I like that.
05:32How tall is this thing going to be?
05:33We got to go ultra big.
05:35Four?
05:36Now you're getting warmer.
05:37You know what?
05:38Let's go for six.
05:39We got a tall order ahead of us.
05:40And we're used to building stuff that takes a week, even a month.
05:43We got 24 hours to make this a reality.
05:47So I'm thinking about creating a different type of bot that no one has ever seen, giving
05:52it a superhero ultra stance, building something in the center that any kid will be attracted
05:57to nowadays.
05:58Everybody loves tablets, so why not build a tablet inside of our ultra bot?
06:02We also have lights coming out of the hands and the head just to give it that ultra appearance.
06:07Our ultra bot is going to be presented at the Make-A-Wish Foundation, so a lot of kids
06:14are going to see it.
06:15To be able to give something back to them is just a dream come true.
06:19Let's bring it in.
06:20Bring it in.
06:20Bring it in.
06:20Big Angie.
06:21Big Angie.
06:21Woo!
06:22Team Boss Bashers on three.
06:25One, two, three.
06:27Team Boss Bashers!
06:29Hi, guys.
06:31Yeah, you see us?
06:32Yeah.
06:32I see all of y'all.
06:35I see you guys.
06:36You look good.
06:36I am so excited that you guys decided to partake in Buddy vs. Christmas.
06:43Oh, my gosh.
06:44You guys could just throw in the towel right now.
06:45Ooh!
06:46Think of us as the Avengers of Lego building, all right?
06:49Ooh!
06:51Okay.
06:52May the best team win.
06:54We're a virtual handshake.
06:55That's it.
06:56All right.
06:57We'll see you guys soon.
07:00Mobility.
07:01All right?
07:02That's going to be our secret weapon.
07:04And not only is ours a cake, but it also drives.
07:13Their piece ain't driving.
07:15That, I can guarantee you.
07:16No, it ain't.
07:18Start building the toys.
07:20We'll be back.
07:21And we'll go from there.
07:22We haven't crashed a cake yet.
07:24So I got Ralph and Becky sculpting the toys while me, Mo, and my son are building the wooden
07:29frame that's going to turn this into the Buddy the Elf mobile.
07:33We can't have a real rocket booster on the back, so we're going to have some fun with it, make
07:39it a little cartoony.
07:40It's going to look really cool.
07:41Like, it's actually, you know, trying to fly away.
07:43You need to make the platform where the cake will go, and then the rocket booster for the
07:47back.
07:49Yippee!
07:50Pretty good.
07:51If it works, it'll be pretty cool.
07:52I'm going to cut that hole out for the garbage can.
07:54What are you trying to do?
07:57We're going to cut this can in half, and this is going to be a rocket booster.
08:01It's going to kind of be like a big remote control car.
08:05It's a toy that delivers toys.
08:07Good.
08:08It's actually pretty good.
08:10Right now, I'm making a jack-in-the-box.
08:12I've built up the box out of cereal treats.
08:14I'm covering it with modeling chocolate, and then we're going to make an internal support
08:18for the, I don't know, the body of the jack.
08:21Can you imagine how bleak the past must have been that, like, a jack-in-the-box was an
08:27actually fun toy?
08:28I don't think it was ever fun.
08:30Right?
08:30Clowns you know are coming are bad enough.
08:33Guess what, kids?
08:35I'm here!
08:36They're like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
08:37Go back in the box.
08:42That's terrifying.
08:44All right, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
08:46We got to get these feet done, man.
08:47We got to get these feet done.
08:49We're going to start from the ground up.
08:51What we got here is the frame of our foot.
08:54So the bot has to have a big foot because it's going to be a big character.
08:58So what we're doing right now, we're stabilizing the inside by making a foundation.
09:02We got to make sure that everything that we're building here is equal and is even because
09:07all the weight of this bot is going to be pressed down on this foundation.
09:11If this foundation is off by just one stud or a little bit, then it's going to mess everything
09:16up.
09:16You feel me?
09:16Yes.
09:17A stud is the circular pattern that's on a brick.
09:20And if the stud count is off, then game over for us.
09:24Literally one stud can spell defeat for your actual build.
09:27Once we build it up, we can work on the aesthetics on the outside.
09:30We got some snappy stuff.
09:30Red goes all the way up to the knees and then we blend in the gray.
09:33All of this should be red.
09:35This whole top level right here.
09:36So this top part should be all red.
09:38This is what we're cutting off.
09:40That's what I was going for.
09:41I mean, unless you think it's going up one.
09:43Nah.
09:43All right, hold on, hold on.
09:45Wait, wait, wait.
09:45Pause, pause, pause, pause, pause.
09:46Excuse me, excuse me.
09:47What are you looking for?
09:49Two by four reds.
09:50Two by four reds?
09:51Start looking.
09:52You got to have more.
09:53Everything we got is out here.
09:55If you don't have any more red bricks, this whole thing comes to a screeching halt.
09:59Now we'll discover that we don't have the amount of red bricks that we need to even build
10:03the feet.
10:04So now we have to go back to the drawing board.
10:06We're going to need red for the calves.
10:09We're going to need red for the arms.
10:13That all we have done is the feet.
10:14Yeah.
10:15So what's the game plan?
10:25If you don't have any more red bricks, this whole thing comes to a screeching halt.
10:30Now we'll discover that we don't have the amount of red bricks that we need to even build the
10:34feet.
10:34So now we have to go back to the drawing board.
10:37We're going to need red for the calves.
10:40We're going to need red for the arms.
10:43All we have done is the feet.
10:45We got to change directions.
10:47We have over 100,000 bricks that are in our room.
10:50However, you can underestimate the amount of bricks that you use in order to build certain
10:55pieces.
10:56Like we ate up a majority of the red on just feet.
10:58On paper, it looks like a lot.
11:00But once you start building, yeah.
11:02It's not a lot.
11:02All right.
11:03So we're going to have to cut this thing in half.
11:05From a six foot robot to a two, three foot robot.
11:09You know, he's going to sit there and put our robot on top of his cake.
11:11It's an order, man.
11:12That's what I don't want.
11:13So what's the game plan?
11:14It's tough because we're pretty much done with the size and shape.
11:17And now we have to start over from scratch.
11:20My hands are already hurting.
11:22Yes.
11:22We're going to literally take that, cut it in half, supports and everything, and then
11:27round it out so that way it's like, you know, red on all sides and stuff.
11:30And then we can immediately just get started on the legs.
11:33I think it's just making sure that we don't run out of bricks again.
11:36We're using the blue for the legs.
11:38And then at the waist area, you go into a gray.
11:41I see blue, but I mean, I just don't know if we have a lot.
11:43Once we know how much we have, that determines how tall we could actually make this thing.
11:48Yo, yo, yo.
11:48You got blue, bro.
11:50You need some blue, my man.
11:51Here you go, man.
11:51Look, blue.
11:53All I'm saying is if we could build while we talk, that'd be great.
11:56All right, come on, come on, come on, come on.
11:58Nah, man, we need to know the height, bro.
12:00Come on, chill.
12:00Yeah, we need to know the height.
12:02The cross begins here?
12:03I think so.
12:04This change affects the design by the height.
12:07At first, we wanted six feet.
12:09Now we're looking at maybe four or five feet.
12:12We'll be finishing our next foot.
12:14So I think we're in a good spot right now.
12:17You're such a Captain America, man.
12:18Am I really?
12:19Yeah, you're so positive.
12:20And everything.
12:22I appreciate that.
12:23Where my shield, though?
12:25That's the case where my shield at.
12:26I think there are different advantages to sculpting and modeling chocolate.
12:30Building with those little bricks like that, though, is such a different discipline than this.
12:34Like when you're working in chocolate, you have to have a rigid structure inside of what you're doing.
12:38But I feel like I can work really quickly with modeling chocolate.
12:42Should I cover his little snout?
12:44Snoop?
12:45This color?
12:45If you want to, go ahead.
12:46I don't really want to.
12:47I think it looks super cool like this.
12:48It's fine.
12:49Then just leave it like that.
12:50It looks fine.
12:50Why do you make, like, the scariest dolls?
12:54What?
12:55This one's supposed to be you.
12:56This is for children.
12:56It's not supposed to terrorize them.
12:58It looks just like you.
12:59If you think it's scary, then you're afraid of yourself.
13:04That's not Becky's hair color.
13:06Oh, so now it is Becky.
13:08Can you keep it like that, please?
13:10Why does she look like a nun?
13:14I'm trying to work quickly.
13:17I feel like I do have, like, a nun vibe.
13:19Yeah, a little nun doll, French bear, creepy caterpillar man in the box.
13:26Yo, we're six and a half hours in, 6.5.
13:31And look how much we got done so far, man.
13:33So, the feet are done.
13:35Now it's time to do the leg.
13:37So, Jermaine came up with a mold of one part of our leg.
13:41So, now we have to start cranking out molds in order to stack them in a way that we create
13:46the shape of the legs.
13:47There's no instructions for this toy.
13:49This part of the leg is straight all the way down.
13:52So, that's a straight angle.
13:53In this part of the leg, the right leg, is one stud tilted back.
14:00We now have to think about what technique we're going to use in order to make our legs
14:04bend.
14:05They're going to have to come in.
14:06Can we bring it in one stud in?
14:08Yeah, like, at the kneecap, it'll come in one stud, so that way it'll separate the thigh
14:13from the...
14:13That's all I wanted to know.
14:16Building with bricks is like chess.
14:17You're thinking about three moves ahead of your opponent, or what you're going to do.
14:22In order to make something round, you have to use certain pieces, certain size pieces.
14:27So, you're starting something that looks like a block, but when you look at your third step,
14:31it's going to look like a ball.
14:33So, the filler that we have here is what is going to be inside of this hollow leg of this
14:39ultra bot.
14:39So, we're going to be running through bricks very quickly.
14:42We still got a long way to go, fellas.
14:45We made a bunch of red chocolate for the car, but look at it.
14:48The chocolate's got all the little white bits in it.
14:51So, modeling chocolate basically is chocolate and glucose, and some of the chocolate did not
14:58totally emulsify, and they were like little white lumps.
15:04It was almost speckled.
15:05It's a shame because it'll look good, and then as it sets, some of the ingredients
15:09separate, and you get little flecks in it.
15:12You have to keep sheeting it out.
15:13Eventually, it breaks down, but it takes a while.
15:16That's something we don't have time for.
15:18It's every batch?
15:19Yep.
15:21To get the red modeling chocolate usable, it's going to take hours.
15:25Hours we don't have.
15:27I'm going to have to pull the whole team onto this.
15:29I'm a little agitated.
15:31I'm a little agitated.
15:32Three pounds done, 117 to go.
15:36This is what it is right now, and this is what it should be.
15:39It's like getting lighter as we make it.
15:40Well, yeah, because now the white is mixing in.
15:43If we start trying to color correct it, too, this could eat a lot of time.
15:47We're not in a good spot right now.
15:55This is what it is right now, and this is what it should be.
15:58It's like getting lighter as we make it.
16:00Well, yeah, because now the white is mixing in.
16:03If we start trying to color correct it, too, this could eat a lot of time.
16:07I'm a little agitated.
16:09I'm a little agitated.
16:09And there's so much that we have to do, because all of it's looking like this, so we're not
16:16in a good spot right now.
16:18I don't think it's worth it at this point.
16:21Beck, that's enough on the red.
16:23I think we, I don't want to say abort the plan.
16:26Oh, my God.
16:27But I say we ice the whole car in green.
16:31I definitely like the green better than the red.
16:33You know what?
16:34The green's going to look better with that velvet anyway.
16:36Listen, you're still going to need red, so it's okay?
16:39Yeah, that's our detail color now.
16:41That's it.
16:44Look at that.
16:45Yeah, this is, this is what we want.
16:47I mean, even like there's no, there's no bumps.
16:50It's the consistency, it's the color.
16:53I do feel like we have a lot to do, and not a lot of time.
16:56No pressure, Becky.
17:00Guys, we've only got 12 hours left.
17:02Oh, what'd you do?
17:06I hate the staple gun.
17:07This is the worst staple gun.
17:08It's the only one in the wood shop.
17:10It's really our only one?
17:11I think so.
17:14You wonder why you're missing all the staples.
17:17Buddy's my nephew and my godson.
17:20I do love working with him.
17:21He's a great help.
17:22He's like a little mini me sometimes.
17:24Huh?
17:26Give me my hat.
17:27No, now you're an angry elf.
17:29No, now I'm a bald elf.
17:30How's it going, Becky?
17:34I've got, like, probably too many toys for an adult.
17:38Hey, I like toys.
17:39This is a fun theme.
17:43He's wearing a diaper.
17:44Those are some strong pectoral muscles out there.
17:47I think that's fine.
17:48We got a lot of, a lot of toys over here.
17:51None of these is like a real focal point, you know?
17:53They're all to make the bigger impression that the bag is full of toys.
17:57This doesn't look like a basketball to me.
17:59I like that you're not too worried about it looking good.
18:03Like, you're okay with just doing whatever.
18:05That's, you know, that's, that's cool.
18:07That you don't stress out about things like that.
18:09Becky did the best work of her career on that basketball, man.
18:12Let me tell you.
18:15Manny, mark it with the, with the brick, how tall this is going to be.
18:19We're putting the screen, we're putting the screen here, and then we're building the chest up here.
18:22And break it off right there.
18:24Oh.
18:24So now we know, this is the length of the gray.
18:27Oh, gotcha, gotcha.
18:28Right there.
18:28We got the legs done.
18:30Now we got to work on the lower torso.
18:32We have to build our upper torso.
18:33We have to build our arms for our stance, and we have to build our hands for the lights.
18:38We also got to work on the backdrop of our bot, and also the stand that he's going to be on.
18:43We have a lot of things that got to go into this build.
18:45So right now, we're going to start the hand and forearm of UltraBot.
18:50So as the fellas over here are building the torso, that way we can at least get a jump on it.
18:56Keep the pattern four.
18:58All right, so those two, those two by sixes that you had, put two of them going across like that.
19:03One and two.
19:04The challenges and concerns that I have breaking us up into different teams is the fact that we might be building something,
19:10and we're not aligning it with everybody else.
19:12We're thinking about making it like this.
19:14Okay.
19:15So this will be the front of it, and then the rest, and then we'll build the rest of the arms out.
19:19How are we adhering that to the arms?
19:22What if we build just a hand, leave the center, leave the center part, leave the center of it open,
19:28as we're building the rest of the body?
19:32So you're just going to sit the thing on top of like a nub?
19:35Yeah.
19:35As you're building this, you have to visualize the entire arm.
19:38All of this has to be perfect to the T, so that way there's no snags along the way.
19:44This will squeeze within the space that you've got.
19:46Yeah.
19:47Yeah, so I've just got to take it apart, put it back in.
19:50Yeah, that's fine.
19:51All right.
19:52So that 10-15, I'll have the forearm completed.
19:55Get to it.
19:56All right.
19:56Cool.
19:57Hey, what's up, guys?
19:59Hey, buddy.
20:01What's up, man?
20:01How are you guys making out?
20:03We're making out all right.
20:04Yeah.
20:04Starting to look good.
20:06How do you like my interior, huh?
20:07Where's the door?
20:08How are you supposed to get in?
20:10Almost done.
20:11Now you're going to be in trouble because the cake's coming.
20:14You say so.
20:15All right.
20:16Now, I got a stupid question.
20:18How fragile are they to deliver?
20:20To be quite honest with you, buddy, we're not, as of right now, we're not even worried
20:24about that.
20:25And I'll tell you why.
20:26The bottom portion of this is so sturdy and it's built so perfectly.
20:30It's a struggle just for us to even lift it.
20:32Those legs are not going anywhere.
20:34And now, the top part, come to us in a couple hours and we'll be able to answer that question
20:39more thoroughly.
20:41Travis was a make-a-wish kid.
20:43Travis spent many weeks in a hospital building with bricks with his brother to get through
20:48this.
20:49Their passion for playing with bricks has never gone away, but their creations have
20:52only gotten larger and crazier.
20:54Well, listen, guys.
20:56Good luck.
20:57Same to you.
20:57Keep up the good work.
20:59All right, man.
20:59Good luck, man.
21:00Buddy, don't work too hard.
21:01Now it's time to start adding cake to the sleigh.
21:04I got all the cake you could eat.
21:06We usually use pound cake when we're carving cakes because it holds up anything you want
21:12to sculpt or carve and it tastes delicious.
21:15Smell it.
21:16Smell it.
21:19Buddy Jr. is adding each layer of cake and then adding buttercream frosting.
21:23Let me show you.
21:24What am I doing wrong with it?
21:25You got to use it.
21:27First off, whenever you get this, you don't dirty the knife.
21:31My son, he's still got a lot to learn.
21:33I want to show him that he can do it and push him to do great things.
21:40Just the tip of the knife?
21:42Tip.
21:43Just the tip.
21:44Okay?
21:45And then you can spread it wherever you need it so that it's even.
21:48You want me to do the sides too?
21:50No.
21:50After.
21:50We're going to get the shape and then we're going to see exactly where the sides are and
21:55then we're going to go from there.
21:57So now we stacked the cake up and it's time to kind of carve it and, you know, we're shaping
22:01it into kind of like a bag shape and I'm getting excited.
22:05Want to get some dowels in this bag?
22:07I mean, from a weight perspective?
22:08I'm not worried about a weight perspective.
22:10It's just it's going to be on a car that's driving around.
22:12About 12 inches so that I can get this hammer on the floor.
22:16Okay.
22:18That's why they call it pound cake.
22:19We're looking at nine hours, fellas.
22:22Nine hours.
22:23Oh, so this is straight level.
22:24So this is good then.
22:25Let's see how that has to go in.
22:27Mm-hmm.
22:28So, some more studs.
22:31What I have to start figuring out now is how to attach this.
22:33The lower torso is going to be built directly onto the legs.
22:37Oh, no.
22:41Now, let it go, let it go.
22:44It's the bone room.
22:45Oh, my God.
22:46It's literally like putting together a puzzle.
22:51So, if a piece does not fit, you cannot jam that piece into it until it fits.
22:56Damn.
22:57What's this helping?
22:57They mounted on the wrong way.
22:59This is supposed to go over there.
23:00We can't move on to any other feature on our bot until our torso is right.
23:05Oh, no.
23:14Oh, no.
23:18Smell.
23:19Let it go, let it go.
23:21It's the bone room.
23:22Oh, my God.
23:23Oh.
23:25It's literally like putting together a puzzle.
23:28So if a piece does not fit, you cannot jam that piece into it until it fits.
23:33Damn! What just happened?
23:34We mounted on the wrong way.
23:35This is supposed to go over there.
23:37We can't move on to any other feature on our bot until our torso is right.
23:42What are we doing, fellas? What's going on?
23:43So the problem is that we just did everything reverse.
23:46We have to get this wall to this back end, and we're back in business.
23:50So it's a matter of working fast to make an adjustment so that the torso fits in.
23:56So, Jermaine, you said we're going to leave this wall, leave the sides?
24:00Yeah, so...
24:01All right.
24:03Let's finish cutting this out so that we know exactly what we're working with.
24:08Lock this guy in, and then the shape is good.
24:13Good.
24:14This week, the special skills originality, so we're making a rocket-powered sleigh.
24:21It's going to kind of be like an original toy.
24:23I'm just going to make jaggedy flamers as it goes.
24:28To get these streamers to be like that fake, you know, flame, we're using plastic.
24:32Because if it's paper, it could just rip and fall off.
24:35It had to be rigid enough, but light enough to blow.
24:39Okay, turn it on.
24:40Fire in a hole.
24:41This fan is quite anticlimactic.
24:52So the rocket booster we had didn't have enough power.
24:57All right, I think I got a plan of attack.
24:59Did we even see if it works?
25:01It's plugged in.
25:02Is it on?
25:04Whoa!
25:04The salve is to put a stronger blower inside so that we get more motion.
25:10Right now, at least we know the concept works, and this looks awesome.
25:14I think we got a winner.
25:16So then we want to do the bag we're culling in.
25:18Let's make it gold.
25:20What's that?
25:21Let's make the bag gold.
25:23A metallic gold Santa bag.
25:26It'll definitely have a lot more pop with the gold.
25:29So let's get that iced, and then we'll start covering this first.
25:34Because then we won't have any more mess, and then we'll hit the sides.
25:38We're going to just wrap.
25:40Over, over, over.
25:41Yeah, I think just straight across.
25:44Nice.
25:44I'm going to, like, fold this over and make this the lip of the bag.
25:47Also, we should make, like, a, um...
25:50Yeah, a drawstring.
25:51Mm-hmm.
25:53Making some folds.
25:56Oh, he's going to look so good.
25:59He's going to look great.
26:04That's a little pop.
26:05It looks great.
26:06It looks really good.
26:07Torso test time.
26:11Oh, my God.
26:16Love it.
26:16It's, like, snug, snug, snug.
26:19This is looking awesome.
26:20We got the torso.
26:22We got the belt.
26:22Mm-hmm.
26:23This is really looking good.
26:24So we're actually doing great timing.
26:26How we doing?
26:27I just want you to take a look at what you're dealing with.
26:29That looks cool.
26:31See the detail?
26:32Oh, yeah.
26:33I like the fist.
26:34We had a big problem.
26:36So all our modeling chocolate wasn't mixed in enough.
26:40Oh.
26:40We definitely had a setback.
26:42We're not doing that good.
26:43We actually put on a torso backwards, so we're in the same boat.
26:47It's going to be tight, man.
26:48It's going to be tight.
26:49We can't wait to see what you guys made.
26:51We're excited for it.
26:52Likewise.
26:53Likewise.
26:53All right, man.
26:54We got to turn off the monitor.
26:55Good luck.
26:56You too.
26:57Let's go.
26:58Let's go.
26:58Let's go.
26:5990 minutes.
26:5990 minutes.
27:00We got to build our shoulders, and then we're going to connect it to our arms.
27:04And the final touch is to put the head on.
27:07So, like, determine how wide the neck is going to be so you can build the supports in
27:10the chest now.
27:12I'll make sure that these don't interfere with that.
27:14And then you can slide the neck right into it.
27:15So, he had four studs on the right side of the neck and four studs on the left side of
27:20the neck.
27:20So, now you're at 22 studs.
27:22So, that head has to be 22 studs long.
27:25It's coming over to actual that.
27:26Yeah.
27:26All right.
27:2722 studs long?
27:2722 studs long.
27:28We built the upper torso and then the shoulders.
27:31Travis, how are you looking on that shoulder?
27:34It's almost done.
27:35Nice.
27:36I'm going to have a whole other shoulder for you soon.
27:37We're finalizing the arms right now as we speak.
27:40We can then think about putting our technique connections in order to hold it in place.
27:45Here's what has to happen is that your part has to intertwine into that torso at this
27:50point.
27:50So, we need that done like ASAP.
27:52That's going to be all the difference.
27:53Okay.
27:54So, about how far out from the chest should this be?
27:56That's good.
27:57And then the two gauntlet hands, we build those separately.
28:00We're going to slide onto the arms as the figure is posed.
28:03Remember, those parts are not going to be connected to the robot itself.
28:07When we get there, it should really just be plug and play.
28:09We still got two hours to work once we get to the location.
28:12Watch your back, watch your back, watch your back.
28:16Here we come, here we come.
28:18Watch up.
28:18Are we centered?
28:20Um, I think so.
28:21Pretty centered.
28:22Pretty centered.
28:23Now, we can finish decorating the cake and add the green modeling chocolate.
28:27It wasn't supposed to be green, but we didn't have time to try to fix the red.
28:31So, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
28:33I just hope that the green modeling chocolate looks good.
28:36Buddy, get the next one going.
28:38Because now it's go time.
28:39This head is coming over in just a second.
28:41Just get this flushed all the way through like you're doing here.
28:44And then you're good.
28:45You ready for me, Mel?
28:46Yeah.
28:47Yeah, so put the head on.
28:48Make sure it looks right.
28:50Guys, 10 minutes, 10 minutes.
28:51Come on, let's go.
28:52Let's hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle.
28:53All right, let's do it.
28:55I'd like to do it in one piece.
28:59All the way down to the bottom.
29:03It's finished strong.
29:04It's finished strong.
29:09Any space that there is in toys, we'll put sprinkles.
29:11Great.
29:12Love it.
29:12Love it.
29:12Okay.
29:19All right, guys.
29:20Time's up.
29:21That's it.
29:22All done.
29:23We'll finish it up when we get there.
29:24But I think we did an awesome job.
29:26Proud of this team here.
29:27Bring it in.
29:28On three.
29:29Put it in.
29:29All right, what are we going to do?
29:30One.
29:30Christmas.
29:31Yeah, okay.
29:32One, two, three.
29:33Christmas!
29:34Yeah.
29:37All right.
29:38How can we help with this, with the tape?
29:40Let's get this wrapped up.
29:41Yeah, this is probably going to be the most fried town.
29:44Okay.
29:46Are we ready to load up or no?
29:48I'm ready.
29:49Good.
29:49Forward, forward, buddy.
29:50Drive forward.
29:51Forward.
29:52Get in.
29:52Go.
29:55Yeah.
29:56Good, good.
29:56Stop.
29:56Break.
29:58All right.
29:58Let's close it up.
30:00Step.
30:01First step.
30:01We got this thing done, but now we have to move it.
30:05Where are we going?
30:06Straight.
30:07Going straight.
30:07Take your time.
30:08Take your time.
30:08Take your time.
30:09Take your time.
30:09Take your time.
30:09Take your time.
30:10Take your time.
30:10Oh.
30:11Oh.
30:11Oh.
30:12Oh.
30:12Oh.
30:12Holy smoke.
30:16Just like that.
30:17Damn.
30:17Take your time.
30:26Take your time.
30:27Take your time.
30:27Take your time.
30:28Take your time.
30:28Oh.
30:28Oh.
30:29Oh.
30:29Just like that.
30:35It's a bad idea, bro.
30:36Yeah.
30:37I had no support under it, so.
30:38The only thing that I'm worried about is the feet.
30:42The feet was the only thing that shattered.
30:44So we'll put everything together at the spot.
30:46This is the first thing we're going to tackle when we get there.
30:47All right, guys.
30:48All right.
30:49Cool.
30:49See y'all there.
30:50All right.
30:50All right.
30:50All right, let's get going.
30:56Let's get it going.
30:57All right.
30:57All right.
30:57Let's get it going.
30:58Let's get it.
30:59Left side.
30:59Left side is all Lego.
31:00Break.
31:01Coming to Make-A-Wish, it's overwhelming.
31:03It's emotional, you know?
31:04But at the same time, we have a shattered leg in the back seat, so we got to rush and get
31:10this leg fixed so we can get our Ultra Bot together.
31:13Get Ultra Bot out the car.
31:16Want to start passing me those boxes?
31:18Yeah, let's take those boxes out.
31:19Boxes and buckets.
31:21Boxes and buckets.
31:24That makes sense.
31:25It's going to be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle figuring out where everything is.
31:29Don't make it work.
31:31All right.
31:31All right.
31:33This can buckle at any second, and then we're screwed.
31:36Wait, what's going on?
31:37Well, the problem is that Mo's saying if we back this out, the front bumper's not going
31:43to clear the back.
31:44The cake is longer than the lift gate, and if you pull the cake out, it could fall.
31:49Can you kind of come diagonally out to this thing?
31:52I think the diagonal will hurt you more because you're going to be in a corner.
31:55Getting this cake out of the truck is more of a problem than I thought.
31:58What we really need to do is have another truck here, and we'll marry the lift gates together
32:04like we did on Buddy vs. Duff.
32:05That's our favorite move.
32:06We can't put any red on top if it's not filled in yet.
32:09I got you.
32:10So we have to take this off.
32:11This looks really bad.
32:13It looks like a mess right now.
32:15We're just going to have to rebuild the foot, like just dig into it.
32:19And you know, if we're putting too many small pieces, we can't use these now.
32:22Yeah, we ain't got time for that right now, man.
32:24Straight, straight.
32:29Good.
32:30Oh, perfect.
32:31Good.
32:31That's as nice as you can get it.
32:34Slow.
32:35Straight.
32:36A little more, a little more, a little more.
32:38Good.
32:38Stop.
32:43Okay, Buddy, come forward.
32:45All right, Mo.
32:45That's good.
32:46Cut the wheel this way.
32:48Okay, bring it inside.
32:50You good with the feet?
32:51Just looking at it head on.
32:52Is the curvature right in the back now?
32:54Yeah.
32:55Like, I'm going to just follow this outline and build it up.
32:57That's the size.
32:57It's 14.
32:58It's 14 studs across.
32:59Yeah.
33:00It's time.
33:01It's game time.
33:01We got 10 minutes.
33:02Yep.
33:03Let's finish strong.
33:04All right.
33:04That makes no mistakes.
33:05That's right.
33:05Okay.
33:06Let's finish strong.
33:11I would try to go a little left with the bear if you can.
33:17All right, she's nice and big.
33:18Yeah.
33:18She's perfect.
33:22You want me to start touching up the gold?
33:23After.
33:24I like that.
33:25I like that.
33:25That looks really cool.
33:27Focus, focus here.
33:28Focus here.
33:29Focus here.
33:30All right, where are you at?
33:31Come on.
33:31The leg is breaking.
33:32The leg is breaking.
33:34I'm over here.
33:35Come on.
33:35Let's build this.
33:35Let's get it together.
33:36We didn't tell you to get the torso yet, man.
33:39We got one minute left.
33:40Come on.
33:40Finish your touches.
33:41So cool.
33:42Let's put all the lights on, bud.
33:44I'm here creaking.
33:46Come on, guys.
33:46Easy.
33:47Easy.
33:47Easy.
33:48Easy.
33:49There you go.
33:50Take a look.
33:52Good job.
33:53Good job, boys and girls.
33:55Nothing in place.
33:58Somebody take a picture quick.
34:00Back to judging in this week of Courtney Quinn and Jason Chatfield.
34:07Courtney Quinn is a color expert.
34:10She's worked for some of the biggest fashion brands on the planet.
34:13Jason Chatfield is a cartoonist and a comedian based in New York City.
34:17Jason's work has been published everywhere from The New Yorker to Mad Magazine.
34:21For this competition, it's important to have judges to speak to all types of creative forms
34:26and styles and artistic impressions.
34:28I think they're going to be the perfect judges for this.
34:30Buddy, Corey and Travis, your theme for this Christmas challenge was toys.
34:36You were to create something that any kid would be so excited to see under the tree on Christmas
34:42morning, and the focus of this challenge was originality, something that was really unique
34:49for your finished product.
34:51Corey, Travis, show us what you made.
34:53My brother and I, we love Christmas.
34:55Running under that Christmas tree, getting to that gift, ripping it open, pulling out
35:00the greatest toy, so we took that same energy and exactly what we loved, we created it 10
35:06times bigger.
35:07All right, let's go.
35:09Oh!
35:11Look at that!
35:13That is incredible.
35:16This is Action Hero Ultra Bot.
35:21A-Hub for short.
35:22A-Hub has been built with love and care by these five gentlemen, and we have over 70,000
35:29Lego pieces constructed to build our bot.
35:34And just for some added flair, we put a tablet in the center, because we know how kids love
35:39to play with their tablets, and they also want an action figure.
35:42And as a former Make-A-Wish child myself, we would be donating Ultra Bot to the Make-A-Wish
35:48Foundation.
35:49Nice.
35:49Bravo.
35:51Bravo.
35:53So beat that.
35:54All right.
35:55Buddy, you have your work cut out for you.
35:58What have you made?
35:59Christmas is by far my favorite holiday, and I'm Buddy, Buddy the Elf.
36:06We made a giant Buddy the Elfmobile stuffed with toys ready to deliver to all the good kids.
36:15Show them!
36:20Wow.
36:21Wow.
36:21Wow.
36:22Wow.
36:22Wow.
36:22Wow.
36:23Wow.
36:23Wow.
36:24Wow.
36:25Wow.
36:25Wow.
36:26Wow.
36:26Wow.
36:29Buddy, what have you made?
36:31Show them!
36:35It's imaginary.
36:36Somebody did?
36:37Wait, wait, wait.
36:37Let me go check on it.
36:38I'll bring it back.
36:39Definitely not impressed by that.
36:41Buddy?
36:44Oh, I forgot to tell you.
36:46Mine drives.
36:48Maybe I forgot to mention it.
36:49So what we made for you is a Buddy the Elfmobile, complete with toys for all the good kids.
36:57We're helping Santa, you know, because he's a busy guy.
37:01Our whole car is covered completely in modeling chocolate, 250 pounds of cake in the back,
37:08complete with solid gold steering wheel, velvet interior.
37:12I mean, even Santa's jealous of our whip.
37:16Just saying.
37:18Let's step over and take a closer look.
37:22To me, I think the most important thing is getting the details right.
37:26For sure.
37:27And I think they really went above and beyond on a lot of these details, like the stitching
37:30on the baseball.
37:31Yep.
37:32It's so gorgeous.
37:32Absolutely.
37:34I got to tell you, man, this thing is phenomenal.
37:37Thanks, man.
37:38Thank you, man.
37:39So cool.
37:40This whole area could have been much grander, you know, because it should feel like an explosion
37:44of toys, right?
37:45Yeah, exactly.
37:45It's an open sack of toys.
37:47Yeah.
37:47And they're spilling out.
37:48This is going to be tough.
37:51I don't know how we're going to pick between the two, but let's go over and check out the
37:55robots.
37:57Oh, it's so cool to see it float.
37:59Yeah.
38:00Where the other team's cake is really for the kids of today, for the kids of yesterday,
38:06this is for the kids of the future.
38:08I totally agree.
38:10Yeah, buddy, you really outdid yourself.
38:12Yo, get your hand off the cake.
38:16These guys really care about bricking.
38:18They care about the detail.
38:20But I would like to see more of that curved craftsmanship carried throughout, like, in
38:25the shoulders and things like that.
38:27I have, like, an emotional reaction to this, knowing that Corey and Travis were playing
38:32together in the hospital when he was sick.
38:35Yeah.
38:36This thing could fight cancer just the way Travis did.
38:39Just the way Travis did.
38:40You see so much of this brother duo in Ultra Bot.
38:44It's such a warm story that this is what kind of brought them together through this really
38:48trying time, and they were able to find their own power to overcome it, and I see that in
38:54Ultra Bot.
38:54Yeah.
38:56Thank you guys so much for sharing your creations with us.
38:59We loved seeing them.
39:01Buddy, when we saw your cake, there was so many things that we really enjoyed.
39:06I look at it, and it screams Christmas, and I get so much joy from it.
39:11As much as I loved all the toys on top of the car, when I draw things, I want them to
39:16all feel like they're part of the same universe.
39:19And stylistically, it was a little bit higgledy-piggledy.
39:22It looked like different people made different parts of it with distinctly different styles.
39:27So I would have liked to see it look a little bit more consistent with the toys.
39:31Corey and Travis, I have to tell you, I was blown away by this design.
39:39There's so much that I love about it, but most uniquely, it feels like running down the
39:45stairs as a kid and tearing open the presents.
39:48This is the thing, and it's even got the cardboard backing.
39:52I love seeing your Ultra Bot, but I wanted him to be a little bit bigger and a little bit
39:57more powerful.
39:58I feel like you built these really strong legs, and I just wish that chest stood a little
40:03bit higher and a little bit stronger for Ultra Bot, because you created such a cool character.
40:09There was some amazing work done by both teams.
40:13You gave some really difficult decisions to make.
40:16Well, the team who conquered Christmas is...
40:23Buddy!
40:24Hey!
40:26Look at him!
40:27Congratulations, buddy.
40:29Your prize of $5,000 will be donated in your name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
40:34Thank you, guys.
40:36Seriously.
40:37I want to tip my hat to you guys.
40:40Corey and Travis, you guys inspired me.
40:42So I'm donating this prize in your name.
40:46I couldn't think of two better people to give this check in their honor.
40:51I love those guys.
40:54All right.
40:54This is not a loss for us.
40:56This is actually a win.
40:57Buddy donated $5,000 in our name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
41:02It's going to spread more dreams and grant more wishes to more kids, though it would have been awesome to beat Buddy's butt.
41:09And you guys, you guys did a real deal.
41:13Give me a hug.
41:14Hey, love you guys.
41:19Thanks.
41:19I don't like it when mysterious robots show up where I work.
41:24Next time on Buddy vs. Christmas...
41:28Buddy battles against animatronics experts.
41:31Prepare to lose and Merry Christmas.
41:35This guy Lou is really trying to push my buttons, huh?
41:38Are you using buttery cream?
41:39Where are you using steel and gears?
41:41The challenge is Santa's workshop.
41:43The special skill set is storytelling.
41:46It's going to be really magical.
41:48One of our best cakes.
41:49Ow!
41:50Hi-yo!
41:50Christmas just came early, baby.
41:53It's a nasty show.
