00:00crisis we've ever had we need to build homes faster and more efficiently for
00:06all budgets and all Australians and that's exactly what future house is all
00:12about
00:15our mission is to build three houses for three families in just three months for
00:23three different budgets using three different modern methods of construction
00:29now we may not solve Australia's housing crisis but we're going to give this a red
00:34hot guy previously we met our three brave families who are joining us on this
00:42mission the Fox family in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales are building
00:47two modular homes me and Helen in the process of separating so we want separate
00:53houses but we still wanted to be close to where our daughter is the Cochini family
00:59from Canberra are building a precast concrete home we have two beautiful
01:04children and a third one on the way unbelievable at the same time we're
01:09building a house and us the juries in the northern rivers of New South Wales are
01:14building a 3d concrete printed home I'm having heart palpitations just thinking
01:20about it I didn't know it was coming today no that's not my sign but as you can imagine three houses in three months the system is ridiculous well it's never going to be easy
01:35well there's no turning back now tonight the Fox family get off to a flying star
01:48these are your two hoses wow but it's not all smooth sailing
01:53it's kind of emotional still after months of red tape and frustration it's Geronimo at
02:00Sean's house and builder love goes to a whole new level I love you I love you too buddy
02:06and my first look at my dream 3d printed home this looks incredible mate look at the tree look at the tree
02:14blows my mind before it's back to the drawing board
02:26off he goes
02:31our farm in the northern rivers is our little piece of paradise
02:36but right now it's a demolition site
02:50my mate Dazza is finishing off taking down the old caretaker's cottage
02:54so we can build a new 3d printed concrete house in its place I can't wait to get started
03:02but first we need to salvage everything that's worth saving
03:07yes save it that's good
03:09I need long pieces long all the hardwood
03:15and there's always some gold nuggets to be found amongst the rough
03:20after the cottage came down I thought well I'm going to salvage all of that beautiful hardwood
03:26because it was at least 70 years old and it's in perfect condition and hopefully we're going to
03:34find ways to reuse that in the new build
03:36okay that's a beauty
03:40well these are going to become the the jams the door jams for all the new windows and doors
03:51nice so that gets fixed up against the 3d printed wall and then inside here
03:56yeah is where the new windows get fixed in and then your architraves go on the outside
04:00amazing yeah we save all this beautiful wood
04:04a great job
04:05but these beautiful old beams aren't the only thing we're saving
04:10all the concrete timber and steel in this old shed will live to build another day
04:17so now that we're here yeah we can orientate the house like that
04:30yeah we'll get beautiful northern light straight into the front of the house
04:33I think dreaming up your vision at the start is always the favorite process
04:38talking about your hopes and dreams and how you see yourself living on the land
04:44and then coming up here every time to site and we all seem to decompress a little bit and relax
04:50but now all of a sudden it's a build site and the stress seems to have followed us to our tranquility
04:57in Canberra the Quachinis have chosen to build their family home with precast concrete from ResiCast
05:10mate I tell you what what a cracker of a day
05:14yeah how lucky are we all
05:15we should be at the beach mate
05:17only we're in Canberra
05:18after months of wading through red tape
05:22today is a big step forward
05:24it's knockdown day
05:26builder Mick and owner Sean can barely wait to begin
05:30especially as Mick's made some pretty big promises
05:33gonna lock the four beddy up for Sean and Sarah and the kids in 10 days
05:38pretty exciting isn't it
05:41it's been coming for so long
05:42I was at the point where I was ready to get the sledgehammer and just start doing it myself
05:46do you need a hug or are you okay
05:48give us a hug
05:49there you go buddy
05:52aww
05:52I feel better now
05:53are you doing okay
05:54mate I'm happy as Larry
05:56if we get to start
05:57yeah
05:58yeah
05:58here it goes
06:01well I hope you don't change your mind
06:07there goes the dining room
06:10there comes the brickwork
06:14so the kids have been watching from home
06:21we've had them on the video phone so they can see a lot of it
06:23for all Sean's excitement
06:31their family home still holds precious memories
06:35I'm actually getting a little bit emotional at this point
06:39you know just watching it all go
06:41so Mick
06:47this
06:48right here
06:49used to be a gazebo
06:50so back in the day
06:52they used to hold weddings
06:53right here
06:53weddings
06:54yeah
06:55in the backyard
06:56it's a wedding arch
06:56so yeah
06:57Sean
06:58in the backyard
06:58I love you
06:59oh I love you too buddy
07:01it's really nice
07:03how well
07:04Sean and Mick
07:05seem to get along
07:06it's just such a lovely
07:08working
07:08relationship
07:09and I think
07:10we'll end up with a better house
07:12because of that
07:13look at the mess
07:15you could have cleaned up
07:16for our wedding
07:16look at the mess
07:17hey
07:17it's not a very good start
07:18to our relationship
07:19you know maybe
07:22if we get a divorce
07:23you can have the house now
07:24I'll get the house
07:26and the divorce
07:27in the Blue Mountains
07:39west of Sydney
07:40after 40 years together
07:42Michael and Helen Fox
07:44are building two houses
07:45on the same block of land
07:47me and Helen
07:48we're in the process
07:50of separating
07:51so we want separate houses
07:53they've chosen to live
07:55side by side
07:56so they can both
07:57continue to give care
07:58to daughter Caitlin
07:59there you go
08:02come on
08:02come on
08:02come on
08:03good girl
08:03come on
08:04there's a lot of work
08:06behind the scenes
08:07you know
08:08that goes into caring
08:09for someone with special needs
08:10especially high support needs
08:12we just went to bed
08:13and I said
08:13look I really don't want you
08:14having to move far away
08:15it's not fair
08:16so now we're building
08:18one each
08:19on the same block
08:20we'll have all of our own
08:22kitchen
08:22lounge room
08:23dining
08:23bathroom
08:24and laundry
08:25and we'll actually
08:26have a room
08:27each for Caitlin
08:27they're small rooms
08:30but we have
08:32all that we need
08:32that's all that we need
08:34yeah
08:35so
08:35so here is where
08:38mummy's house is
08:39this is a bit strange
08:40isn't it
08:41because mummy's got a house
08:43and daddy's got a house
08:44but this is mummy's house
08:45and Caitlin's house
08:46and Caitlin's room
08:48is going to be over there
08:49over there yeah
08:50nothing's really changed
08:52the only difference
08:52is that we're going to live
08:54or I'm going to live
08:54my life more independently
08:56I've been with him
08:58for like
08:59since I was 21
09:00you know
09:01it's lots and lots of years
09:03and I haven't experienced
09:04any other life
09:05doing anything else really
09:07so
09:08yeah
09:09it might sound strange
09:11to a lot of people
09:12yeah
09:15still emotional
09:17but at the same time
09:20yeah
09:21it'd be good
09:21yeah
09:25good luck to you
09:25come and have a look
09:27yeah
09:29I think I'm
09:31coping pretty well
09:32with it now
09:32it's
09:33initially
09:35it was difficult
09:36you think
09:37your life's
09:38all set
09:40and then everything
09:41changes
09:42yeah
09:44it makes you feel
09:46quite down
09:47for quite a while
09:48it takes a while
09:48to get over the shock
09:49of that
09:50and adapt to it
09:52it sounds quite selfish
09:54you know
09:55in one way
09:55that you want to do
09:56your own thing
09:56but at the same time
09:58it's healthy
10:00because
10:01you are
10:02yeah
10:03yeah
10:05sorry
10:07it's kind of emotional
10:10still
10:10yeah
10:14coming up
10:21can Nick
10:22realise my vision
10:23it's a staircase
10:24it's like Morse code
10:25it's like
10:26it's like an atom bomb
10:27look
10:28I love him
10:28I understand him
10:29and I think
10:30we'll get somewhere
10:31and still to come
10:33it's really a matter
10:35of choosing
10:36what sort of colourings
10:37we're thinking
10:38for both the homes
10:39that's just splitting it up
10:40it's one of the advantages
10:41we can choose
10:42whatever we want
10:43and blow what the other wants
10:44the more things change
10:45okay
10:45it seems the more
10:47they stay the same
10:48are you going to say
10:48the same thing
10:49we're going to put
10:50the same flooring in
10:51and of course
10:52you copied me
10:53well yeah
10:54there you go
10:54on our farm
11:02in the northern rivers
11:03of New South Wales
11:04it's a big day
11:06after months
11:07of back and forth
11:08Nick from Contour 3D
11:10is here to show me
11:11what I hope
11:12will be the final designs
11:13for our new
11:143D printed concrete house
11:16good to see you
11:17good to be
11:17welcome to the homestead
11:18thank you
11:19should have brought my jacket
11:19I swear to be chilly
11:20yeah it is
11:21when we first met Nick
11:24he inspired us
11:26with the capabilities
11:27of 3D concrete printing
11:29and I want to use
11:30those capabilities
11:31to bring nature
11:32into our build
11:34I love the idea
11:35of having
11:36these beautiful
11:37concrete trees
11:38mixed in with
11:40a real tree
11:41that might sit
11:42in the centre
11:43of the house
11:43would that work?
11:45it would
11:45no no
11:45genuinely
11:46you know
11:48the printer doesn't care
11:49it'll do whatever
11:50you put in there
11:50within reasons
11:51Nick claims
11:52that with 3D printing
11:53almost anything
11:54is possible
11:55and in our initial
11:57design session
11:57I gave him a clear
11:59plan of exactly
12:00what I'm after
12:01that's a staircase
12:03I'll have to work
12:05that one out later
12:06so I've morse code
12:07and this looks like
12:11an atom bomb
12:13but between
12:14all these
12:15I love him
12:16I understand him
12:17and I think
12:18we'll get somewhere
12:19I realise
12:22I'm asking
12:22for a lot here
12:23but it's not
12:24unlike me
12:25to push the boundaries
12:26yeah there you go
12:27so here's the model
12:28which I'm hoping
12:30we can still bring
12:31some of these
12:31beautiful
12:32you know
12:33tree like columns
12:34back into the house
12:35the challenge is
12:37has Nick
12:38realised my vision
12:39well
12:41this
12:42is
12:43the tree
12:43that started
12:45the whole conversation
12:46look at these
12:47buttress roots
12:48coming out
12:49I love the way
12:50the roots come down
12:51and it feels like
12:53it's just
12:53completely bedded
12:54into the landscape
12:55it's planted
12:57yeah
12:57and this is what
12:59we try to mimic
13:00you know
13:00in the 3D
13:01absolutely
13:02yeah yeah yeah
13:03I mean I just love
13:04the shape
13:04the contours
13:06you'll look out
13:07from the window
13:08yep
13:09through these
13:10concrete columns
13:11yep
13:11with a tree
13:12that's shaped
13:13exactly
13:13as it should
13:15it's amazing
13:16and biomimicry
13:17biomimicry
13:18yeah
13:18it's where we
13:20mimic nature
13:21and
13:22the idea
13:23of having
13:24the roof
13:26rest
13:27on a forest
13:27of
13:28concrete trees
13:30I love
13:31shall we
13:32shall we see it
13:32come on
13:33is this the final draft
13:34it's the final
13:35okay great
13:36spin it around
13:36alrighty
13:37okay
13:38so this is the
13:39the actual layout
13:40that I think we've
13:41I think we've all
13:41settled on
13:42through the front door
13:43here
13:43yep
13:44and look it's just
13:45it'll be stunning
13:46oh it's beautiful
13:47and with a combination
13:49of the windows
13:49and the 3D printed columns
13:51you know
13:51there's no post finishing
13:52of the walls
13:53yep
13:53yep
13:54you know it's all
13:54organic
13:55it's magic
13:56columns look stunning
13:58yeah
13:58you know
13:59part of nature
13:59yeah they do
14:00but we'll get them in
14:01in less than a day
14:02really
14:03it moves rapidly
14:04we'll be printing it
14:04200 millimetres a second
14:06no
14:07it just rises out of the ground
14:08quicker than watering a tree
14:10if we get this right
14:14yep
14:14this could be
14:16an absolute game changer
14:17this might be the way
14:18that people build
14:19their new houses
14:20before this
14:21you know
14:22and all credit to you
14:23I'd never thought of
14:24columnising a house
14:25I suppose
14:25well I hadn't either
14:26but I was sitting out here
14:28and I looked at the tree
14:29and I'm like
14:29we should just print a tree
14:31and print many trees
14:35and then put the roof
14:36on top of it
14:37I'm excited
14:38mate
14:39me too
14:39I mean this is
14:41this is revolutionary
14:42there's never been a 3D
14:43concrete printed prefab house
14:44so you'll be
14:45you'll be first
14:46we will be first
14:47yes
14:48we will be first
14:49I don't know if I'm crazy
14:51brave
14:52or stupid
14:53but this 3D printed
14:55concrete house
14:56is either going to be
14:57something very special
14:58or a huge white elephant
15:00in a beautiful forest
15:02if we're going to build
15:07houses for the future
15:08we've got to make them
15:09more resilient
15:10for Australia's
15:11changing weather conditions
15:13hey Meeks
15:14yeah
15:14come and check this out
15:16this is amazing
15:17there's a new online tool
15:19that helps identify
15:20weather risks
15:21for wherever you live
15:22it even provides tips
15:24on how to make
15:25your home
15:26more resilient
15:27so Suncorp Insurance
15:29have developed
15:29this website
15:30we're just punching
15:32our address here
15:33yeah
15:33and there you go
15:35whoa
15:36how cool is that
15:38with Smee your home
15:40it's good to finally chat
15:42our house
15:43talks to us
15:44can you believe
15:45I'm over 100 years old
15:47oh
15:48yep
15:48which is why
15:49we need to have
15:50a serious chat
15:51about my resilience
15:52they say a home like me
15:54is a high risk
15:55for bushfires
15:56this website works
15:57for everyone's area
15:58so everyone just
16:00punches in their own
16:00address
16:01whether you're in Canberra
16:02or the Blue Mountains
16:03or here in Bangalow
16:04but that's incredible
16:05I mean that's a fantastic
16:06tool for people
16:07that are moving
16:08into a property
16:09climate change
16:10is something that's
16:10really relevant to everybody
16:11you can see your own house
16:13you can see what risks
16:14are relevant to you
16:15see what you can do
16:16about them
16:16anyway
16:18thanks for the chat
16:19I really appreciate
16:20you taking the time
16:21to listen
16:22and they've even used
16:24a fairly elderly voice
16:26no because she's 100 years old
16:27well this is an old house
16:29that's her house right
16:29while I'm still mucking around
16:35with concrete tree designs
16:36for our 3D printed house
16:38in the Blue Mountains
16:39the Fox's two modular homes
16:41are well on their way
16:43these are your two houses
16:49wow
16:49this all started last Friday
16:54both houses
16:55frames and crosses are up
16:56and you know
16:57we are well ahead of time
16:58tomorrow
16:59we'll what we call
17:00rough in
17:01so the electrical
17:02plumbing
17:03and the air con
17:03I think you know
17:05we'll achieve lock up
17:05in the next two weeks
17:07well ahead of time
17:08wow
17:08they're going very well
17:09that's good
17:10we better start packing
17:11yeah
17:11they've chosen the
17:14Snowgum 60 design
17:16two bedrooms
17:17with built-in robes
17:18separate bathroom
17:19and laundry
17:20open plan lounge
17:21and kitchen
17:22with an island bench
17:23there's a lot packed
17:24into this 60 square metres
17:26oh it's fantastic
17:27it's uh
17:28yeah really good
17:29very happy with everything
17:31yeah
17:31it's brilliant
17:32you can come and see
17:33what stage they're at
17:34they're moving along
17:35really fast
17:36it's incredible
17:37the amount of work
17:38these guys have put
17:38together in less than a week
17:40the modular building process
17:42is not unlike building
17:44a lightweight house
17:45the only difference
17:47is it takes place
17:48indoors
17:48last week
17:50it was just raining
17:51cats and dogs
17:52okay
17:53but then our factory
17:54was just busy as
17:56you know
17:56we were still continuing
17:57to build
17:58and you know
17:58we didn't have any issues
17:59we didn't have to stop
18:00because of the inclement weather
18:02okay
18:02that's one of the biggest
18:04advantages that we take
18:05with the modular
18:06with michael and helen's
18:10house construction
18:10forging ahead
18:11they're keen to decide
18:13on their flooring
18:14and carpet court
18:15has made an on-site visit
18:17with their mobile showroom
18:18to help them choose
18:19so this particular range
18:22here is the parkie collection
18:23a feature that i think
18:25is really important
18:26with this product
18:27it's got the wood shield
18:28top coating on it
18:30so you're going to find
18:31it's going to be really
18:32hard and sturdy for you
18:34with their daughter
18:35Caitlin in mind
18:36the parkie floor
18:37is the perfect option
18:38as it's resilient
18:40and easy to maintain
18:41the other thing
18:42that i love
18:43about this product
18:44is it's sustainable
18:46so it actually uses
18:4825% less wood
18:50than other standard
18:52timber floors
18:52wow
18:53so it's really
18:55a matter of choosing
18:56what sort of colourings
18:58we're thinking
18:58for both the homes
18:59yeah i like
19:02probably a lighter colour
19:04because i'm going to have
19:05dark walls
19:05okay
19:06but also a natural
19:08looking timber
19:09it was an opportunity
19:11to choose
19:12different
19:12different ones
19:14so we could be
19:15you know
19:15as we're splitting it up
19:16it's one of the advantages
19:17we can choose
19:18whatever we want
19:18blow what the other wants
19:19and we'll do our own thing
19:22you know
19:22so yeah
19:24i was thinking originally
19:26going for something
19:27a bit darker
19:27but i've actually come back
19:29to the natural oak
19:30are you going to say
19:32the same thing
19:33we're going to put
19:33the same flooring in
19:34i love it
19:35look let's get this clear
19:38i picked first
19:40all along
19:41i wanted this particular
19:42one
19:43the natural oak
19:43i liked its warmth
19:45and lighter tone
19:46and of course
19:48you copied me
19:48well yeah
19:49there you go
19:50what more can i say
19:52in canberra the cochinis
20:06have knocked down
20:06their house
20:07but now
20:08builder mick
20:09and owner sean
20:11have hit a major
20:12red tape hurdle
20:13do you know much
20:15about the solar
20:16encroachment
20:16as much as
20:17any layman's
20:19person can
20:19my understanding
20:21is it's about
20:22preventing
20:23my house
20:24blocking the solar
20:25effect on
20:26the neighbor's house
20:27that's right
20:27so you don't want
20:28to block the
20:28yeah which kind of
20:29makes sense
20:29because i'm designing
20:30this house to
20:31maximize the solar
20:32effect
20:32we want to let
20:33everybody else
20:33do the same thing
20:34in sean's case
20:36the solar encroachment
20:37rules require his
20:38house to be built
20:40two meters from
20:40the neighbor's fence
20:41to a wall height
20:42of just 1.8 meters
20:44so this has to go
20:46down another 900
20:47to reach the
20:48finished floor
20:49level
20:49i mean look
20:51if i'm about
20:52two meters tall
20:53oh yeah
20:55two meters out
20:55there's a shadow
20:58there it doesn't
20:58even hit the
20:59neighbor's yard
20:59and we're in the
21:00middle
21:00it doesn't even
21:01make it up my
21:01fence
21:02my fence is
21:02doing more
21:03damage to their
21:04solar envelope
21:05than the house
21:06will
21:06well true isn't
21:07it
21:07this really is
21:08red tape gone
21:10mad
21:10so really half a
21:11meter down will
21:12be your finished
21:13floor
21:13you're going to
21:14be down in a
21:14hole
21:15yeah
21:15and what you're
21:17saying is
21:17i could probably
21:18bring the house
21:18up and change
21:20that but i'd
21:21have to go
21:21through a da
21:22you'd have to
21:22go through a da
21:23sean now faces
21:25some difficult
21:26choices
21:27endure the long
21:29delay of applying
21:30for a da
21:30or lower the
21:32level of his
21:32house and cop
21:33the extra cost
21:34of excavating
21:35hundreds of
21:36tons of
21:37additional soil
21:38i'm just going
21:43to spend the
21:43money and not
21:43wait
21:44well it's
21:45cheaper for you
21:46to spend the
21:46money than
21:47wait
21:47cheaper it's
21:47three times as
21:48much in rent
21:48correct
21:49yep
21:49yep
21:50it's not even
21:53day one
21:54and we're already
21:55and we're already
21:5620 grand in the
21:57hole which is not
21:59even a hole yet
22:00rex and high tech
22:09rex and high tech aren't
22:09the only modular home
22:10builder going from
22:11strength to strength
22:13i'm heading to
22:14queensland to see how
22:16another modular
22:16construction business
22:17ollie homes is growing
22:19to meet demand
22:20ceo dale funston
22:23ceo dale funston explains
22:24how far they've come
22:25since he joined 15
22:27years ago
22:28so back then how long
22:30did it take to build
22:31one of these
22:31a small one of these
22:33about eight months
22:34eight months
22:35eight months
22:35and what are you building
22:36them at now
22:37probably the four piece
22:39one eight weeks
22:40unbelievable
22:41yeah
22:42combank has led the
22:46way when it comes to
22:47modular housing loans
22:48and business lending
22:49we know that housing
22:51supply is a real
22:52challenge
22:52yeah
22:53and prefabricated
22:54housing is one way
22:55which we really think
22:56can help mobilize
22:57supply
22:58let's go and have a
22:59look at the finish
23:00that's great
23:00beautiful
23:01why did combank
23:07get behind prefab
23:09yeah i mean first
23:10thing is we wanted to
23:10do something about
23:11australia's housing
23:12crisis
23:12and then what we also
23:14discovered is that
23:15manufacturing is alive
23:16and well
23:16in australia in this
23:18segment
23:18combank's funding
23:22is enabling ollie homes
23:23to expand their
23:25operations
23:26you're now helping
23:29him build a second
23:30facility
23:31is that right
23:31we are
23:32that's going to be
23:33550 home
23:34a year capacity
23:36so that's going to
23:36wow
23:37more than double
23:38the capacity
23:39that they have here
23:40today
23:41so we feel very
23:42privileged to be
23:43a part of that
23:44having seen the
23:51designs for my
23:513d concrete
23:52printed house
23:53i'm visiting the
23:54factory
23:55where all the
23:56magic happens
23:56and i'm told
23:58they've got a
23:59little surprise
23:59for me
24:00oh so we're
24:01going to do a
24:01vr
24:02yeah exactly
24:02you can see
24:03your home
24:03oh great
24:05okay
24:05this is amazing
24:06help you
24:07okay
24:08oh that's
24:12beautiful
24:12so you can
24:14walk around
24:15the house
24:15oh wow
24:16okay
24:17look at the
24:18front entrance
24:19oh
24:21my
24:22this looks
24:23beautiful
24:24wow
24:26this looks
24:28incredible
24:29mate
24:29look at the
24:31tree
24:31look at the
24:32tree
24:32this is the
24:36exact tree
24:37on the farm
24:38exactly
24:39the designs
24:40the designs
24:40nick showed
24:40me on the farm
24:41truly have
24:43come to
24:43life
24:43when you
24:44actually put
24:45those 3d
24:46goggles on
24:46and you start
24:47walking through
24:48the rooms
24:48it feels
24:49absolutely
24:50surreal
24:51i mean i
24:52started feeling
24:52seasick
24:53whoa
24:54it's so incredible
24:59i've actually
25:00never put one
25:00of those
25:01on
25:01i mean like i've
25:05got the sweats
25:05with excitement
25:06that was amazing
25:08mate
25:09really amazing
25:10fantastic
25:12the virtual version
25:15of our 3d
25:15concrete printed
25:16future home
25:17blows my
25:18mind
25:19and it's
25:20just a
25:20taster
25:21downstairs
25:24they're going
25:25to test run
25:26the first
25:273d
25:28concrete printed
25:29tree column
25:30for our new
25:313d printed
25:31house
25:32this is good
25:34yeah
25:34nowhere on it
25:35where we're going
25:36we're printing
25:36this is great
25:38this is not the
25:38final material
25:39we're going to be
25:39using
25:40so this is a
25:40slow setting
25:41material
25:42okay
25:42but we get
25:43the general
25:43shape
25:44well yeah
25:44look the shape
25:45looks beautiful
25:46so i can already
25:47see the tree
25:47starting to form
25:49yep
25:49imagine this all
25:50the way through
25:51yeah yeah yeah
25:52and it'll come
25:52through it's like
25:53an hourglass
25:54and it'll come
25:54nice and straight
25:55and then belly
25:56out at the top
25:57i've always wanted
25:59to build a house
25:59that mimics nature
26:01right
26:01sure
26:02and this is the
26:03first pillar
26:04of our new
26:06home
26:07it is
26:07it's going to
26:08look stunning
26:08so this really
26:11is the very
26:11first 3d printed
26:13prefabricated
26:15house
26:15in australia
26:16if not the
26:17world
26:17as far as i
26:18know
26:18because it's
26:19prefab
26:20everything's built
26:22in the factory
26:23and then brought
26:23out to site
26:24nothing like
26:25being the first
26:26you could call
26:28us guinea pigs
26:28we're always
26:31guinea pigs
26:31nick and his
26:33team at 3d
26:34contour
26:34spend months
26:36pouring over
26:36concrete chemistry
26:37to get their
26:38mix exactly
26:39right
26:40it's a high
26:41performance
26:41mortar
26:41almost 50%
26:42recycled
26:43we've got a
26:43lot of herbs
26:44and spices
26:44in there
26:45it dries to 60
26:46mpa almost
26:47so it's really
26:48it's really tough
26:49that's strong
26:49yeah
26:50mate i'm very
26:52excited are you
26:53yeah
26:53yeah i'm a little
26:54bit
26:54wait till we
26:56wait till we
26:57finish the test
26:57we're making
26:58history here
26:59huh
26:59i wouldn't expect
27:00anything left
27:00from you jamie
27:01mate it's
27:03teamwork
27:03i gotta say
27:04you guys are
27:05so good to
27:06work with
27:06it's really
27:07been fun
27:07so we're
27:10getting a few
27:11expansion cracks
27:12cracks
27:14oh no
27:16no
27:19no no no no
27:21no no
27:22so we're getting a few
27:39expansion cracks
27:40oh no
27:41no
27:43no no no
27:45no no no
27:45this is the first
27:53test print for my
27:543d concrete printed
27:55home
27:56let's just say
27:57it hasn't all gone
27:59according to plan
28:00so the moment i saw
28:02all of that 3d
28:03material fall into
28:05a pile of cow manure
28:08i just felt like
28:10this is never going
28:11to work
28:12because you know
28:14we couldn't even get
28:15up 500 millimetres
28:17and we need to get
28:183.1 metres high
28:20why did that happen
28:24so the layers below
28:25weren't cured enough
28:26yet
28:26so this was always
28:30going to fail
28:31i thought i'd get to
28:32a metre but i was
28:34right
28:34500 mil short
28:35well i guess that's
28:37why we do tests
28:37right
28:38for sure
28:38it gives us a lot
28:39of data
28:40it's like uh it's
28:41like elon musk
28:41blowing up rockets
28:42he'll blow five up
28:43and the next one's
28:44next one's good
28:45so yeah
28:46so and we're happy
28:47to fail you know
28:48as long as we learn
28:49oh mate that was
28:50it happens so quickly
28:53right
28:53it does
28:54so i think we learn
28:57we live and learn
28:58and we'll uh we'll
28:58know what to do for
28:59next time so let's
29:00get back into it
29:01tomorrow
29:01more accelerant
29:02yeah we're gonna
29:04use a different
29:05mix
29:05i'll be honest
29:07seeing the column
29:08collapse was like
29:09watching my dream
29:10crumble right before
29:12my eyes
29:13nick's still confident
29:15but i'm starting to
29:17feel just a tad
29:17worried
29:18up in the blue
29:29mountains helen is
29:30looking on the bright
29:30side as she explores
29:32her new neighbourhood
29:33yeah this is our
29:35street
29:36yeah you can hear the
29:39highway yeah you can
29:40hear the railway but
29:41it's quite pretty
29:42oh here we go this
29:45is actually a high
29:46tech home here and
29:49uh he's he's actually
29:50a bit bigger than
29:51ours he's even got a
29:53slow combustion that's
29:54fantastic the foxes
29:57have chosen the high
29:58tech snow gum design
29:59which is just 60
30:01square meters and
30:02costs only 76k each to
30:05lock up when you add
30:07internals and fit out
30:08plus delivery and
30:09assembly the costs
30:11can vary a lot
30:11in the case of the
30:13foxes the total cost
30:14for each house is
30:16just over 200k
30:17incredibly high tech
30:20promises both houses
30:21will be delivered on
30:23site and installed in
30:2512 weeks
30:26they've got first stage
30:29got the walls up it's
30:30starting to look good
30:31isn't it yeah and
30:32um yeah i'm really
30:33hopeful for what's
30:34going to happen next
30:35yeah so far so good
30:36it looks good
30:37with both houses only
30:40being 60 square meters
30:41each michael and helen
30:43know there will be
30:44some challenges i think
30:45it'll be pretty small
30:46but it'll be manageable
30:48don't you think i hope
30:50so yes well worst
30:53comes to worst we can
30:54join them together and
30:55you know i'm sure it'll
30:57be okay yeah but you'd have
31:00to move out without walls
31:01sorry
31:03in any house renovation or
31:10build choosing styling is
31:12definitely the fun bit
31:14well we're here at oddy
31:15australia they are all
31:16things bathroom laundry
31:18we're looking for bath tubs
31:20tapware
31:22sinks
31:23someone's already made a
31:25mind up let's go
31:26come around this way i'll
31:35show you an amazing farmhouse
31:36look bath tub
31:37this is the bondi that's nice
31:40this is the whole mini
31:41it's cute i like it a lot
31:44it looks like the old
31:45the old tubs i love it
31:46really exciting collection
31:48the bondi collection so this
31:49is all about curves
31:51and what's perfect about
31:54these ranges as you can see
31:55it's the plywood detailing
31:57yeah so this is water
31:58resistant
31:58but traditionally a lot of
32:00this joinery has been mdf
32:01always been mdf so why do you
32:04do it out of plywood because
32:05it's more sustainable so it's
32:07longer lasting you'll love
32:08it forever until you're sick
32:09of it you know and no
32:11formaldehyde no formaldehydes
32:12less volatile compounds yeah
32:14tick tick tick tick what does
32:17that button do magic oh so
32:25this is face lighting perfect
32:26for makeup it's like a tiktok
32:28light like we could start our
32:31own tiktok there you go
32:32maybe you i can teach you how
32:34to dance or maybe you can
32:35teach me how to dance we could
32:38revive the manpower days oh
32:40yeah great let's move on
32:42now being a gardener my first
32:48instinct is to start any build
32:50with the garden regardless of
32:54the fact that our 3d test print

34:28yeah thanks so this is going well
34:30so part of my negotiation um tactic was
34:36that i would gift him some of our prize
34:39roosters this is where i get the big discount
34:44we love our roosters would we call them a gift
34:48they're the gift that keeps giving yeah at 3 a.m
34:50yeah every day yeah they're in the prime of
34:53their life this has got to get me at least a hundred bucks off
34:56holy moly i didn't think it was that
35:02he'll come back he'll come back
35:05have you ever tried to catch a rooster
35:09it's not easy
35:11we'll get him
35:14coming up the animals have gotten in and
35:22eaten all the trees
35:23it's the attack of the herbivores
35:26i want to get rid of all the cows
35:28and replace them with trees
35:31and later unless we get this resolved in the next 24 hours
35:39i'm gonna have to go talk through real estate and find out how much i can get
35:41for selling this block as it is
35:43bureaucratic bungles leave sean's dream home
35:46hanging by a thread
35:47we can't move forward
35:49on the farm it's been two weeks since i bought a forest worth of fruit trees from the nursery
36:01and i've just heard from my farm hand fab
36:04there's been a little hiccup
36:07so mate uh
36:10what happened
36:13so the animals have gotten in
36:15and eaten all the trees
36:17they look a quarter of the size
36:20oh yeah
36:21did someone leave the gate open
36:25well yeah the bottom gate got left open
36:28and there's also another gate down the other end
36:31that uh they've knocked over
36:33the cows i think
36:35right
36:35this is like three and a half grand's worth of fruit trees
36:41i thought this would be great
36:45in a couple of years time we'll start bearing fruit
36:47and off we go
36:48we've probably lost a year of growth
36:51if not more
36:52well that's
36:53because they're all
36:54this high
36:56i know mate
36:56i know
36:57all the leaves
36:57you know
36:58don't tell me
37:00farming 101
37:02close the gates
37:04farm life
37:06it's tough on the farm
37:07i'm gonna put barbed wire
37:10and an electric wire
37:11i mean it obviously works on every other farm in australia so
37:15yeah
37:16i've never put up an electric fence before i wouldn't know
37:18i want to get rid of all the cows
37:22and replace them
37:24with trees
37:25i start absorbing carbon
37:27producing renewable energy
37:29and producing food
37:31yeah
37:31yeah
37:32i'm glad you're on this train with me mate
37:34okay
37:35i feel like i might need to go out and purchase a few more
37:39trees
37:40yeah
37:41more trees aren't the only thing on the shopping list for our new future home
37:48we're also looking for the most energy efficient kitchen and laundry appliances
37:54so we try to make sure that we work with brands and suppliers that have a whole range of options
38:02asco in particular are probably one of our most sustainable brands
38:06so in terms of the electricity and water efficiency but also in terms of how recyclable their products are at the end of their lives
38:13so they're thinking about the circular economy
38:16100% how we use it and then also what happens once we're done with it
38:19amazing
38:20whoa these look cool
38:26what do these do
38:27these ones you've got your washing machine and your dryer
38:30it has a 10 star energy rating
38:32so it doesn't get much better than that
38:34that's amazing
38:35yeah you can't beat that
38:36because the dryers are one of the biggest energy users in the household right
38:40100%
38:40okay we've got kitchen cupboard
38:42yep
38:42we've got laundry cupboard
38:44jazz you've nailed this
38:46the foxes are also making decisions about their kitchens
38:54so Neolith is a sintered stone product
38:59it mimics a really similar process that natural stone
39:02so your marbles go through
39:04and then the heat is actually what gives it the pattern that you see on the product
39:09so it's not printed
39:10wow
39:11it's baked
39:11wow
39:12because of the way that we manufacture
39:16it's completely non-porous
39:18meaning that it's really resistant to staining
39:21and it's ultra hygienic
39:23so you only need to use a little bit of soap
39:25some warm water
39:26and it's completely clean
39:27fantastic
39:28yeah
39:29love it already
39:30yeah
39:30Neolith's sintered stone
39:34is 100% carbon neutral
39:36and greatly reduced silica
39:38and then we have my favourite of the collection
39:41which is called Taj Mahal
39:43so this has got a really creamy neutral
39:46it's quite a soft vein
39:48yeah
39:49I like that but I think I might regret it
39:51it does look like
39:53they probably like the kind of dramatic
39:55I don't know what it is
39:56yeah
39:56I'm checking out this one here
39:58I don't know why
40:00she could tell actually which one I was going to choose
40:03and it was called
40:06Taj Mahal
40:06Taj Mahal
40:07I think I'd probably have to go the same one
40:10you choose the same
40:11we have different types of points
40:13he's led the right way
40:14well
40:15chosen the same again
40:18it seems the more things change
40:20the more they really do stay the same
40:22no no you absolutely can't
40:23you don't know
40:24next up on the shopping list for our future home
40:27is fans
40:28and when it comes to fans
40:29there's no bigger brand than this
40:32I think the key things with fans is
40:37they're moving air throughout that whole house
40:3924 hours a day
40:41and it'll probably cost you anywhere between
40:42$8 and $12 a year
40:44oh wow that's it
40:46yeah well they hardly draw any electricity
40:48this beautifully designed bamboo model
40:51is called a Haiku Lux
40:53the blades themselves have been designed to mimic
40:56an aircraft wing
40:57a 2.1 metre diameter fan
41:00just bear in mind you need a really big room
41:02and some pretty high ceilings to get that one in
41:04yep
41:04so Jamie this one here
41:07it's basically eight layers of most so bamboo
41:10layered on top of one another
41:12to produce this finish
41:13and from a sustainability perspective
41:16it's certainly best in class
41:18yep
41:18I can see this in the main living area
41:21now we've also got a bearing of that particular model
41:24that we've just brought to Australia
41:26it's called the coastal Haiku
41:27we make these fans as durable as possible
41:31in outdoor environments
41:32and the coastal model
41:33for your outdoor areas
41:35would be the go
41:36sign me up for that one
41:38coming up
41:41I'm just
41:42I'm done
41:43I'm done
41:44Sean pulls the plug
41:47and
41:50listen if we didn't innovate
41:52we wouldn't have light globes
41:54would we
41:54Edison you're calling yourself
41:57no
41:58in Canberra
42:07Sean Quaccini
42:08has yet another red tape bungle to unravel
42:11why are we stuck
42:16once again on trees
42:17a number of a tree
42:18on the number of a tree
42:20on a report
42:21it's approved
42:24and the problem is
42:25but the certifier won't go
42:27I agree
42:28because of a number on a tree
42:30one number
42:31because that one number
42:32is not the same as that number
42:34an admin issue has resulted
42:37in the trees on Sean's plans
42:39being numbered differently
42:41in two different reports
42:43in the automated system
42:45that you have to fill it out on the thing
42:47you have to mark which trees they need to assess
42:49and that creates the number of the tree
42:51it doesn't take it off
42:53the plan that you submit
42:54it just creates in whatever order
42:56you put them on them
42:57you drew them on their map
42:59yeah
43:00that's all it is
43:01not hard
43:03there's no legal reason
43:05to do this
43:07to stop this from happening
43:09Sean's been trying unsuccessfully
43:15to navigate the ACT's
43:17fast track building approval process
43:19for 12 weeks
43:20longer than the 10 weeks
43:22it takes
43:22to build a resi-cast house
43:25he's now run out of time
43:28money
43:29and patience
43:30so right now
43:34unless we get this resolved
43:35in the next 24 hours
43:36I'm going to have to go talk
43:37to the real estate
43:37and find out how much
43:38I can get for selling this block
43:40as it is
43:40because we can't move forward
43:42this has been months
43:45of stupidity
43:46I'm just
43:58I'm done
43:59I'm done
44:00back on the farm
44:11those pesky cows
44:13may think they've got
44:14the better of me
44:15but they can't stop me
44:16enjoying a big juicy steak
44:18with my mates
44:19it's also a great time
44:22for my beautiful
44:23singer-songwriter
44:24Amika
44:24and her band partner
44:26Matt Boylan-Smith
44:27to set the mood
44:28of course
44:43Jamie would plant
44:45fruit trees
44:46and have a great vision
44:47and then the cows
44:48would escape the paddock
44:49and eat the fruit trees
44:51that's just what happens
44:52to us
44:52is it annoying?
44:54yes
44:54is it frustrating?
44:55sure
44:56I think you've just
44:57got to laugh
44:58and keep going
44:58otherwise I would be
44:59quite literally mad
45:01the 3D printing test
45:03fail on the other hand
45:04is no little thing
45:06it's a little things
45:08little things
45:09little things
45:10little things
45:11yeah
45:11I'm actually
45:12really really excited
45:13to live in the 3D printed home
45:16I'm just
45:17really
45:17at the moment
45:19apprehensive
45:20that it's going to work
45:21because it's experimental
45:23I'm nervous
45:26I'm really nervous
45:28there's no plan B
45:31there really is no plan B
45:33no we're kind of
45:34we're in too deep now
45:35we've committed
45:36but I guess
45:38we've got to put faith
45:39in the team around us
45:40and hope that it all works
45:43because
45:43listen
45:45if we didn't innovate
45:46we wouldn't have light globes
45:48would we?
45:48Edison you're calling yourself
45:51no
45:52you're preparing yourself
45:55to Edison
45:56no
45:56I'm just saying
45:57we've got to try
45:59new things
46:00it's the little things
46:04it's the little things
46:06with you
46:08next time on Future House
46:17Sean finally gets
46:19some good news
46:19it's all been in theory
46:21until this point
46:22and now it's here
46:23it's real
46:24it's great
46:24I think just like
46:25it's a dream come true
46:26it sounds so corny
46:28but
46:28it is
46:30it's just a dream
46:31yep
46:32I've got it
46:33there we go
46:34we built a house
46:35in the time you went
46:35and bought five chickens mate
46:37well nine chickens
46:39thank you very much
46:40but
46:40at our farm
46:41on the northern rivers
46:42oh
