00:00It's a dark and stormy night, the perfect weather for a hot cup of tea and a good story.
00:17And lucky for you, I have one of the best ever told.
00:20It's about four misfit kids from Oregon who find a pirate map that leads to the adventure of a lifetime
00:27and a treasure worth millions.
00:30Okay, you got me. I'm talking about The Goonies.
00:33But the truth is that I've been talking about this movie since I was about eight years old.
00:38Sorry, Dr. Jones, but it was Mikey, Mouth, Data, and Chunk who first inspired me to explore the legends and mysteries of the world.
00:46This year, The Goonies turns 40, and we have reason to celebrate.
00:51Because it turns out that my favorite movie was based on a real-life legend.
00:56That's right. There is an actual treasure on the Oregon coast that has never been found.
01:02Huh. Must have blown a fuse.
01:05It's a map of the Oregon coastline.
01:29It has something written in Spanish.
01:33Three, two, one.
01:35Whoops.
01:45Ye intruders, beware.
01:49Crushing death and grief.
01:53Wait, my dad told me all about this once.
01:56According to local legend, shipwrecked pirates buried treasure near where The Goonies was later filmed.
02:05And recently, timbers from a Spanish galleon were found there that had been identified as a treasure ship from 1694.
02:14And now, one researcher believes that there may be other precious cargo just waiting to be discovered, like rubies and emeralds and diamonds.
02:25And that's not all.
02:27The discovery of a mysterious skeleton is leading historians to a secluded beach rumored to be dripping with pirate plunder.
02:35What if, what if, what if, what if, what if you guys, these stories could lead to real-life rich stuff and solve a mystery that's more than 300 years old?
02:48Then we wouldn't have to leave the goondocks.
02:50So, the only question is, what are we waiting for?
02:571694.
02:58The past is all around us.
03:05Oh, my God!
03:06It goes on forever!
03:08A world of mystery.
03:11Come on!
03:12Look at that!
03:13Danger.
03:14Hang on!
03:17And adventure.
03:19It's just straight down!
03:22I gotta get a new job.
03:24I travel to the far corners of the earth.
03:28To uncover where legends end.
03:30I got it!
03:32Yes!
03:33And history begins.
03:35Woo-hoo!
03:36Here we go!
03:36I'm Josh Gates, and this is Expedition Unknown.
03:46My quest for buried riches begins where else but at the goondocks, a place I have dreamed of seeing since I was a kid.
03:58While the Goonies is an extraordinary adventure, it begins in a rather ordinary setting.
04:09That's right.
04:09This is the Goonies' house.
04:11The treasure map was found in that attic.
04:14Josh Brolin was tied up with a chest exerciser in that living room.
04:18Guys, chunk truffle shuffled right here.
04:20Do it.
04:21Come on.
04:22Do it.
04:22It's not happening.
04:24In the movie, this and all of the houses in Astoria's goondocks are in danger of foreclosure to make way for the evil country club.
04:31And with that admittedly thin plot device, so begins a film that inspired an entire generation of rejects like me to seek out adventure.
04:40How much do I love this movie?
04:41Well, I'm wearing full denim in front of somebody's private property.
04:45That much.
04:46So let's go on one last Goonies' adventure to find the real treasure.
04:51Come on, guys.
04:52This is our time.
04:53Now all I need is a ride.
04:54I'm on my way to meet a researcher who has the details on the real life Goonies' treasure.
05:15Hi, Josh.
05:16Hi.
05:17My crew has a bet on whether I can manage to get through Astoria without stopping at any more of the locations from the movie.
05:23So long as I keep moving, guess who's winning, turkeys?
05:27But don't you blame me
05:29If you're a full night now
05:31You won't forget me
05:33Even if you tried
05:35You can try to run
05:37But baby, you can hide
05:39You'll get that feeling
05:43You've been here before
05:47What comes around
05:49Always comes around
05:51Okay, I stopped.
05:53But come on, guys.
05:54This is the jail that Jake Fratelli escaped from.
05:57It even has the Fratelli getaway car complete with bullet holes.
06:02Today, this is the Oregon Film Museum, and it's loaded with Goonies' memories.
06:07Like the note Jake used to escape
06:10And Data's gadget-filled costume.
06:13There's a message board where die-hards can reminisce
06:16And a display where a lucky few can play Six Degrees of Corey Feldman.
06:23Okay, Corey Feldman was in The Goonies with Anne Ramsey, who played Mama Fratelli, and she was also in Throw Mama from the Train with Danny DeVito, and Danny DeVito starred in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Christopher Lloyd, and I was with Christopher Lloyd in Expedition Back to the Future.
06:36Is this someone who's paid to be on television?
06:38Huh?
06:39Pretty good.
06:41Yeah, this is one gift shop I am not missing.
06:43Okay, don't go crazy.
06:44Just the essentials.
06:45Sloth socks.
06:46Too small.
06:47Okay.
06:48Can I start a tab?
06:49Is that possible?
06:50Okay.
06:51Can I start a tab?
06:52Is that possible?
06:54Yeah.
06:55This is one gift shop I am not missing.
06:58Okay.
06:59Don't go crazy.
07:00Just the essentials.
07:01Sloth socks.
07:02Too small?
07:03Okay.
07:04Can I start a tab?
07:06Is that possible?
07:08Can I start a tab?
07:09Is that possible?
07:12guys I'm hungry I know my stomach growls there's trouble the expert that I am headed to meet is
07:27south of Astoria at a place called Niacani Mountain it's a place filled with legends
07:33about curses pirate ships and most importantly Spanish treasure so let's ride
07:42I pedal my borrowed bike through the forests until I arrive at a foggy windswept cove on the
07:53Pacific coast it's where I meet diver Matt McCauley Matt hey hey nice to meet you nice to meet you too
08:02wow what a view Matt is the president of the National Shipwreck Alliance a non-profit dedicated
08:08to the discovery recovery and preservation of lost ships and artifacts I know you are serious
08:16about shipwrecks when did you first get the bug well probably back around 1978 when I made my
08:21first scuba dive I was 14 years old diving in Lake Washington I started finding old bottles relics
08:27and even steamboat remains so from that point on I was hooked and then the Goonies came out I
08:32absolutely loved it I thought it was fantastic the kids running around searching for this
08:36treasure and mysterious one-eyed willy in the inferno it was really captivating like I credit
08:41at least half of my career to seeing that movie right it just got me so hooked on the idea of
08:48adventure absolutely love the fact that it was set in the northwest but also it aligned with a tale as
08:56old as I can remember so the Goonies being set in Astoria was not a coincidence no I love a good
09:02legend so what's the story well the story is that sometime back in the 1600s a Spanish galleon wrecked
09:08on the shore right here and the sailors or pirates came ashore with a wooden chest filled with gold and
09:14silver took it up here a mountaineoconnie so this this is mountaineoconnie here yes
09:19according to this legend pirates swam from the wreck into the cove and then buried the gold nearby
09:29killing one of their crewmates and throwing his body on top of the buried treasure and the idea
09:37was to keep away the natives to make them think it was cursed this is like right out of the Goonies it
09:43is this is like one-eyed willy's treasure right down to the skeleton right on top of the gold absolutely
09:49it's an awesome legend any chance that it's true Josh I can prove to you that a Spanish treasure
09:56galleon wrecked right here on this coast for real for real all right challenge accepted why would a
10:03Spanish galleon be all the way up here off the coast of Oregon in the 1600s in the 1600s the Spanish
10:10controlled much of the North American West Coast by 1690 Spain had also established colonies as far
10:18away as the Philippines while still having the resources to conquer and control Mexico as well
10:23as much of South America Spanish treasure galleons loaded with valuable goods from Asia would sail from
10:30Manila crossing the Pacific Ocean to Northern California before catching the southerly current to
10:36Mexico unless that is something went horribly violently wrong which is what Matt believes happened here
10:44for one of those ships to blow off course in a storm and come this far north certainly not impossible
10:53okay so it could happen how do we know that it did well when she wrecked she spilled her cargo
10:59all over this coast and one of the things that was in that cargo was beeswax I'm sorry beeswax
11:05while it might not sound as sexy as one-eyed Willie's treasure in the 17th century beeswax was worth its
11:13weight in gold it was used for candles and to waterproof timbers on ships it was so prized that it was even
11:20traded as currency but honeybees were not native to North America so the wax had to be imported from
11:27Europe and Asia over the sea in galleons and that beeswax turned up here yeah like 90 tons of it
11:3590 tons of it absolutely wow the natives found it right away and started putting it to good use
11:41they would waterproof their canoes they'd use it to start fires and then later as we started to have
11:46some white settlement in the area they would use it as a trade medium there are even reports of
11:50homesteaders having mined it in the 1800s one individual found 125 pound chunk wow today several
11:58of these remarkable waxy relics still marked with the shippers emblems are displayed at local museums
12:04so much of it was found over the years this became known as the beeswax wreck the ship itself is assumed
12:11to have smashed up long ago when she wrecked on the coast but her cargo went way beyond wax this had
12:19goonies level treasure gold silver a lot of very valuable chinese porcelain that broke up into sherds
12:26that the natives would find and then carve into arrowheads and spear tips wow that's incredible
12:32porcelain from all the way across the pacific in china being repurposed as an arrowhead absolutely so we
12:38have reports of all of this stuff turning up literally in the sand right but the ship's identity
12:44was a major mystery to solve it archaeologists started by radiocarbon dating the beeswax and
12:50identifying the porcelain as ching dynasty together they narrowed the production of both relics to a
12:5720-year window from 1680 to 1700 okay so we've got a window of time that this ship must have wrecked
13:05exactly and over the centuries the spanish lost hundreds of galleons but on the west coast only a
13:10handful vanished without a trace and of those only one was lost within that 20-year period of time
13:17which is the santa cristo de burgos bingo 432 feet long complement of crew 45 the santa cristo de
13:27burgos was capable of carrying 1500 tons of cargo before she vanished but the real proof josh came just
13:35a couple of years ago when a local historian found ship's timbers in a sea cave and that was found
13:41where right out behind us out there yes the lost treasure of the de burgos is somewhere nearby and
13:50matt tells me there's one man who's the key to finding it a treasure hunter and real life goonie who
13:56was the first person to discover the wreck josh i'd like to introduce you to the man who found those
14:09timbers craig andes craig nice to meet you this is like a real goonies moment like you actually found
14:15the remains of a spanish galleon on the coast of oregon yeah you're a real goonie yeah yeah i was a goonie
14:22before i was before i was but yeah i'm still a goonie i'm on the oregon coast the setting for
14:29the greatest movie ever its treasure hunt was inspired by a local legend one that's looking
14:36more and more real that's because of the historic wooden timbers discovered here by craig andes when
14:42you found those timbers did you know what they were right away i did because there was really little
14:47doubt from the spike holes in the larger beam and it was a type of wood i've never saw the material is
14:54like iron when craig first discovered the beams protruding from the sand people thought he was
15:01crazy but testing revealed that this is 300 year old asian hardwood that only grows in the philippines
15:09making this a manila galleon one of only three ever found in north america not to mention the
15:16fulfillment of craig's childhood dreams i saw the goonies in colorado when i was a kid and i came
15:22out here and my friends were you know talking about it and all excited about it i don't remember which
15:27one of my friends mentioned it but they were saying hey my dad says there's a treasure that was very
15:30related to the goonies and i remember sitting there telling myself treasure spanish treasure i'm
15:36gonna find that someday and when it comes to this spanish galleon which we now know is real
15:40it didn't just have beeswax on board it had very valuable chinese porcelain but it also had gold and
15:47silver right there's definitely a ton of treasure on the ship the total haul can only be guessed at
15:53but considering that these are the doubloons that inspired the goonies it's safe to say the ship's
15:58cargo would be worth millions now the legend is that pirates or spaniards came ashore and buried this
16:06treasure somewhere on the mountain these stories became more popular in the early 20th century
16:12prompting a frenzy of treasure hunting these were the goonies before the goonies and so many of them
16:19grabbed their shovels and flocked to niacani that it became known as the mountain of a thousand holes
16:24but nobody ever found the gold and silver so somewhere here maybe like right under our feet
16:31there could be spanish treasure yes i know there is we just have to find it okay well should we do
16:37that we should look let's look okay come on here we go the cave where craig first found the timbers
16:44is flooded by the onshore swells so we start to scan the most promising area the spot where de burgos
16:50relics have been found on the beach but to paraphrase sloth it's a rocky road so this is a hugely
17:00challenging place to search first of all you get these massive tidal swings here we're almost at
17:04low tide but in just a couple of hours where i'm standing is going to literally be underwater also
17:09this is state parkland which means we have to use all non-invasive techniques no metal detectors allowed
17:15here so if we're going to find whatever's on this beach we're going to have to actually see it so you
17:20look around
17:21that is a muscle shell that'll trick you
17:36hey the goonies didn't have metal detectors so we scour the soggy beach for hours the old-fashioned way
17:48at least the water's not freezing cold
17:51hey here you go here's a piece what did you find
17:58uh there's a little seal of cobalt wait where you see the cobalt the blue yeah that's not a shell
18:06no that's a piece of qing dynasty porcelain from the wrecked galleon
18:09what it absolutely is porcelain look at that blue patterning that is beautiful
18:17wait a minute this is a qing dynasty porcelain on the coast of oregon you're the first person to
18:26touch that in over 300 years intact pieces of porcelain from this dynasty founded in the 17th
18:33century have sold for millions of dollars putting the ching in cha-ching that was part of a big
18:40vessel there's thousands more pieces of that laying around here somewhere insane that's a piece of
18:46treasure right there did you really think you were going to find a piece when you came here was it
18:49going to be that easy no i still can't get over the fact that there's the wreckage of a spanish
18:54galleon off the coast of astoria guys we are in the goonies right now this is the real goonies
18:59treasure it really is if we find more of this we might be able to save the goondocks let's go come
19:05on i'm in now we're not leaving the search drifts closer to the cliff face we're hoping to find more
19:13pottery a needle in a needle stack or the next best thing gold doubloons oh that is a muscle shell
19:24tide's turning and it's turning in more ways than one
19:36hey you guys guys come here oh my word is that what i think it is you found your first piece
19:49there is that it yeah that's it that's chinese porcelain that is that's from the wreck dude
19:56amazing nice unbelievable courtesy the santo cristo de burgos
20:05okay now i'm officially hooked yeah this is my life now i live in this cove one piece at a time right
20:13sooner or later i get the whole vessel put back together unbelievable got a lot of gravel to look
20:17through though a lot we got our work cut out for us and the tide's coming in let's move
20:22the tide starts rushing back in making the beach more difficult to search
20:30we reposition to some higher ground nearby that looks like it leapt right off the silver screen
20:40look at this
20:45it doesn't get any more goodies than that just like the big water slide totally must be the old moss garden
20:55wishing well look for spare change guys okay troy bucket just if you see a bucket come down let me know okay
21:07look at this view
21:12look at this view
21:16okay let's look around okay
21:18this just feels like such a prime place for stuff to get trapped well this is like yeah a big bowl that stuff gets shot up in here
21:26not only that but this natural depression beneath the waterfall isn't far from where craig first found those timbers that turned out to be from the wreck
21:37matt you got anything nothing yet there's something like looks like this might be some sort of metal you guys
21:44metal where right here that orange rusty looking thing that's not rock no it looks like an iron
21:50that is metal look at that yeah right hold on i can move it
21:56oh here is this oh my word
22:03oh
22:09here is this
22:11oh my word
22:13that is
22:15that's a spike
22:17for the 40th anniversary of my favorite movie the goonies i'm exploring the real oregon legend that inspired what my parents still insist is a fictional story
22:27now we've just found something extraordinary
22:30that's a ship's fight
22:32yeah that's all concluded
22:33look at that
22:35look at the level of incrustation here
22:37yeah it's been there a long time and you usually don't see that level of incrustation up here in these waters
22:42when marine minerals stick to metal objects in the salty ocean they slowly build into a rocky compound known as a concretion
22:50that means this spike is old and the fact that the sea has deposited it in the tide pools near the previously found timbers
22:58suggests it's downright historic
23:01so no question that's a spike right
23:03oh yeah there's no question that's a spike it's been it's been bent in the rack
23:06just the fact that it's been bent like that tells you something about the violence
23:10and that's a lot of force
23:12yeah
23:13that could easily be one of the oldest colonial artifacts found in oregon
23:18definitely
23:19this is a piece of a spanish galley
23:21yeah
23:22dude
23:23that's amazing
23:25okay
23:26right there
23:27we're gonna walk right past it
23:28just wedged here in these rocks for centuries
23:30yeah
23:31wow
23:32you know people always say to me i want to go have an adventure
23:35you know and they think they have to go half a world away to have it
23:38i mean we're in oregon
23:40yeah
23:41we're in the u.s holding a piece of a spanish galleon
23:44amazing
23:46amazing
23:47we continue to scour the shore until sunset having discovered actual treasures
23:53ching dynasty porcelain and a piece of the lost santa cristo de burgos herself
23:59the ship that inspired the goonies
24:01this is our time
24:06goonies never say die
24:08oh downhill
24:09thank the lord
24:10by the light of a new day i'm back on my bike to continue the adventure
24:16matt and craig aren't the only two explorers searching for buried treasure
24:21there's another team nearby with their own theory of what happened to the loot
24:25and since the fratellis are probably catching up to me
24:28we should get moving
24:29here we go
24:34the team i'm meeting left me directions on how to find them
24:37but it appears they're leading me off road
24:40guys i think i have a match
24:53i'm sure of it
24:54the rocks all fit the doubloon
24:57that must mean the rich stuff is this way
24:59can't we just use the gps
25:01you're really not getting into the spirit of this guys
25:03come on i have a doubloon
25:05god
25:10eventually the clues bring me to cascade head oregon by the salmon river
25:19dies
25:20vs dies
25:21that means ten times ten
25:23a hundred
25:24stretching feet
25:26to nearest northern point
25:28north is that way
25:30one
25:31two
25:32three
25:33in the tv business this is what's known as committing to the bit
25:40and i am nothing if not committed
25:44six
25:45seven
25:46eight
25:47nine
25:48a hundred oh hi guys oh hey glad you found us i'm jb nice to meet you
25:50i'm doug
25:51doug how are you nice to meet you as well
25:52doug kenk crispin and jb fisher have written extensively about the treasure hunts here on the oregon coast
26:00and even made a documentary about them what first got you interested in this story of a wrecked ship here
26:07it was just all of these legends that remain consistent these treasure tales of you know these large chests filled with a dead man on top of them buried there for hundreds of years and native people have been talking about them for generations right people haven't been looking for this treasure just since the goonies they've been looking for it since the first kind of non-native settlers arrived here exactly exactly day one oregon trails when these people were looking for this right when they got here in terms of the beeswax wreck
26:24we know that that's real i've held you know remains of it in my hands at this point but you guys think there's a different ship that fits this goonies legend that wrecked here not the deburgos
26:31there's some very compelling evidence about a possible treasure shipwreck here right on the banks of the salmon river just a couple yards from where we are now
26:38all right i'm all ears what version of the story have you heard according to the native story
26:44you have a winged canoe that was coming up the salmon river right out here a winged canoe would be their term for a large sailing ship exactly exactly and what kind of ship is this might be a pirate ship it might be
27:07for a large sailing ship.
27:08Exactly.
27:09Exactly.
27:10And what kind of ship is this?
27:11It might be a pirate ship.
27:12It might be a Spanish ship.
27:14We just don't know for sure.
27:15And the story is what?
27:16So the ship comes on up the river here.
27:18It has some sort of catastrophic incident, maybe a shipwreck.
27:22So they offload treasure from the ship.
27:25And what they're talking about when we talk about treasure
27:27is gold doubloons, silver pieces of eight, other jewels, and so on.
27:31The good stuff.
27:32The good stuff.
27:33In a big chest, and they buried it in the sand,
27:36and then they leave two men to guard that chest.
27:39According to the story,
27:40one of the two pirates left to look after the treasure
27:43was described as an extremely tall, nearly eight-foot African man.
27:48The Native Americans who lived in this area
27:50were not familiar with Africans
27:52and were in awe of what they thought was a giant.
27:55But at some point, the relationship soured
27:58and the Native Americans killed both pirates,
28:02throwing their bodies on a pile of discarded clam and mussel shells.
28:09This sounds like a classic pirate yarn, right?
28:11You've got your pirate ship, you've got your buried treasure,
28:14your slain buccaneers.
28:16Doesn't really sound true though, does it?
28:18Josh, we didn't believe it either until we saw the photographs.
28:22What photographs?
28:23Do you want to see a real deal pirate skull?
28:26Yes.
28:27Well...
28:28Wait, what are these photographs of?
28:36Do you want to see a real deal pirate skull?
28:38Yes.
28:39Well...
28:40Wait, what are these photographs of?
28:42What is this?
28:43A real pirate treasure in Oregon may have been the inspiration
28:48for the greatest movie that eight-year-old me ever saw,
28:51The Goonies.
28:52One version of the story goes that the chest of gold
28:55is buried by the Salmon River,
28:57and that the two pirates guarding its location,
29:00including one described as a giant,
29:02were killed before it could be recovered.
29:05Now, these two documentarians have unearthed
29:08a nearly century-old newspaper article
29:10that contains evidence of two very real skulls.
29:14This is a photograph taken in this area in 1931.
29:18Okay.
29:19And this gentleman here is Elmer Calkins.
29:22He was out here plowing his land, it was very uneven,
29:25and he came through one section there
29:26and ended up being a shell mound.
29:28A shell pile.
29:29Yep.
29:30And he found a bone,
29:31and then it turned out he found a whole pile of bones
29:33in this shell pile.
29:34Exactly.
29:35Correct.
29:36Oh!
29:37There are two skulls here.
29:38Look at this, Josh.
29:39One of the skeletons is about eight feet tall.
29:40No.
29:41Yeah.
29:42Wait a minute.
29:43Two skeletons on top of a shell pile,
29:45just like the legend says.
29:46Just right on the banks of the Salmon River.
29:49The story appeared in The Oregonian,
29:51the oldest continuously published newspaper
29:54on the west coast of the United States.
29:56Large skeleton found.
29:58A human skeleton of extraordinary size
30:01was found today by E.D. Calkins on a shell bed.
30:04So this is not just a legend.
30:06No.
30:07This is documentation.
30:08Were these skeletons scientifically examined?
30:10They were, and they found some really interesting things.
30:13The smaller skeleton actually had an arrow lodged in the vertebrae.
30:17Wait a minute.
30:18There was literally an arrow point in the vertebrae.
30:21Correct.
30:22Yeah.
30:23I mean, this is the story to a T.
30:25Absolutely.
30:26Yeah.
30:27That's insane.
30:29And I'm sorry, what is this photo?
30:31That's X marks the spot for the ship.
30:33That's it?
30:34That's where the ship wrecked.
30:35But wait, this is where?
30:36The mouth of the Salmon River?
30:37Right out there.
30:38Exactly.
30:39And you can see the three rocks
30:40and the other formation cascade head there.
30:42And who put this X on here?
30:44That was what Calkins had determined
30:46was the location of the ship wreck.
30:48That's where he thought the ship ran underground.
30:50Yeah.
30:51And one of the reasons why he was confident about that
30:52was he was a fisherman and he would go out with his net
30:55and he kept hooking on something out there.
30:57And eventually he pulled up some pieces of old wood,
31:00some copper bolts.
31:02Wow.
31:03Okay.
31:04Here's another article, Buried Treasure Soth.
31:06This is from when?
31:07The late 70s.
31:08And this is Edward Calkins.
31:09Is that his kid?
31:10That's his son.
31:11Exactly.
31:12And he says that he's going to try to unearth
31:14the legendary winged canoe from its resting place.
31:17Calkin feels he knows the location of the canoe
31:20and believes there may be booty in the bilge.
31:23Quote, I have the key to one-eyed Willy.
31:25No, sorry.
31:26That's a different article.
31:27But this is like copper pot.
31:29It is.
31:30This is a guy who feels convinced
31:31that there's pirate treasure here.
31:33He didn't disappear down a labyrinth of tunnels, did he?
31:35No.
31:36Not that we know of.
31:37But he also never found the treasure.
31:38He never found the treasure.
31:39Josh, it could be right beneath our feet.
31:41I love that.
31:42We're actually the first to be able to look on this land.
31:44How is that possible?
31:45This land is owned by a private organization
31:47and they've allowed us the permission
31:49to search for this treasure today.
31:51The treasure that Calkins and his son believed was here.
31:54That they never got to look for.
31:55So we not only have this exclusive permission,
31:58but we have this.
31:59Should we start looking?
32:00X marks the spot.
32:01X marks the spot.
32:02Yeah.
32:05To determine where the pirate ship wrecked,
32:07Doug and JB lead me out onto a spit of land
32:10that matches the one in the newspaper photo.
32:14All right.
32:16This is the spot.
32:18All right, so we've got the Salmon River here.
32:20Yeah.
32:21And it is literally flowing out into the ocean.
32:23Right there.
32:24So let's look at this photo from 31.
32:27Yeah.
32:28Here we go.
32:29So right over there, that formation
32:30in the top right-hand part of the photo
32:32is Cascade Head, which is this landmass right here.
32:35Then we have the three rocks.
32:36I mean, definitely, definitely,
32:39those are those three rocks.
32:41No question.
32:42And let's look at where Calkins put that X.
32:44Right about...
32:45Right here.
32:46I mean, like literally right here, right?
32:48Yeah, exactly.
32:49We are standing on this X.
32:50Yeah.
32:51So at high tide, I assume all this is underwater?
32:54That's right.
32:55So you could easily imagine a ship running aground here
32:57on this sand.
32:58Yeah, you bet.
32:59So if I'm trying to get my treasure off this ship,
33:01where am I taking it?
33:02High ground.
33:03Right?
33:04Right over here.
33:05Definitely.
33:06Above the high tide mark, maybe up in those dunes?
33:07Yeah.
33:08Back by those trees?
33:09Yeah.
33:10What do you think?
33:11Should we get rich?
33:12Let's do it.
33:13Let's do it.
33:15In hot pursuit of pirates' plunder, we break out our metal detectors
33:19and get to work, searching the high ground near the purported shipwreck site.
33:24You guys got anything?
33:26Nothing.
33:27Me neither.
33:28Very quiet in here.
33:34We don't have any specifics as to where they buried this treasure, right?
33:37No, all we know is they offloaded it and buried it.
33:40I wonder if they set any booty traps.
33:42Booby traps.
33:43That's what I said.
33:44Booby traps.
33:45They might have.
33:55Good hit here.
33:56Here.
34:01That's…
34:03is a piece of scrap metal.
34:06Well, hold on...
34:07No.
34:13That's a lot of work.
34:18What do you got?
34:20Quarter.
34:21It's currency.
34:22I'll take it.
34:23Oh, I got something.
34:35Got a hit?
34:36Yeah.
34:37Can I borrow your pinpointer?
34:38Yeah, sure.
34:40Whoa!
34:41Oh, sorry, sorry.
34:43Pitcher's apparel.
34:43Pitcher's apparel.
34:45I'm sorry about that.
34:46Here you go.
34:46Still working out the kinks.
34:48At least it wasn't the boxing glove.
34:52The hit turns out to be more scrap metal.
34:54But soon, we get to sink our teeth into something significant.
34:59I got a hit!
35:02A strong, clear hit right there.
35:05Let's see what that is.
35:06All right.
35:12Hold on.
35:15It's up here.
35:16Can you feel it?
35:18Just be careful of this log.
35:19I don't want this to roll.
35:20You feel it?
35:21Yeah.
35:21Yeah, what is it?
35:22Feels flat.
35:23If this log rolls, we're all going to be flat.
35:27Sorry.
35:28Got it?
35:29Ta-ta!
35:30Oh!
35:31That's a nail!
35:32Look at that.
35:32That is a very old nail.
35:34Look at that.
35:35That's an old square head nail.
35:36Lord, look at that.
35:37Fantastic.
35:38That's incredible.
35:39That's almost like a spike.
35:40Yeah.
35:40So where there's nails, there's chests.
35:43Where there's chests, there's doubloons.
35:44So let's keep looking around here, see if there's anything else.
35:47That's a great start.
35:49The nail is an encouraging discovery, so we return to the detectors.
35:54Even though the sun may be setting, I'm not ready to say goodnight to this adventure.
35:58There's gonna be something out here.
36:01Now that is a good hit.
36:05It's pretty deep.
36:09There it is.
36:11Oh!
36:12Guys!
36:13Come here!
36:14Hey!
36:15Come here!
36:16Come here!
36:17Oh my word!
36:18The Oregon wilderness holds more than just the real loot that inspired One-Eyed Willie's
36:32treasure.
36:33It's a regular lost and found.
36:34I got something here.
36:35Oh!
36:36Did somebody lose their wallet?
36:37I got mine.
36:38Mine's here.
36:39It's a driver's license.
36:40Chester Copper Pot.
36:41Tough break.
36:42Hey, what's a mint condition Lou Gehrig baseball card worth these days?
36:56A lot.
36:57Maybe I'll just hold onto this.
36:58Sorry.
36:59Oh my word!
37:00What is it?
37:01It's not aluminum!
37:02Look at this!
37:03Look at this.
37:04Look.
37:05Oh.
37:06Is that a coin?
37:07What is that?
37:08I don't know what it is.
37:09Oh, it's broken.
37:10Oh, it's broken.
37:11What are you?
37:12I'm on the Oregon coast investigating a legend of buried treasure that inspired the classic
37:311985 movie, The Goonies.
37:33We've been digging for hours looking for the rich stuff, and now we may have found some.
37:39Is there writing on it?
37:42Oh, look at that.
37:44There's like a tip on it.
37:46Oh, there's a figure on it.
37:48Whoa.
37:49These look like pins, like maybe it's set in something.
37:52Right.
37:53Yes.
37:54It's like a pendant, right?
37:55It definitely looks pretty old.
37:56Oh, there's writing on it.
37:57Look at that.
37:58S.
37:59M.
38:00M. D.
38:01D.
38:02And then P-I-L-A-R.
38:03Pilar.
38:04Look at that.
38:05Is that two figures?
38:06Somebody with a crown it looks like almost?
38:08Yeah, it looks like it.
38:09Yeah, two figures.
38:10And then someone down below.
38:11Oh, and yes, someone down there.
38:12Down there, yeah.
38:13This is an image, I think, of the Virgin Mary.
38:15I believe so, yeah.
38:16And Pilar is associated, I believe, with Spain.
38:19That's right, yeah.
38:21Our Lady of the Pilar is one name for the Virgin Mary, who is said to have miraculously appeared
38:26to the Apostle James on a pillar in what is now Spain.
38:31From then on, she became the patroness of Spain and protector of all Hispanic people.
38:36If a Spanish ship did come this way, this talisman could easily have been aboard.
38:41So this is not only a Christian Catholic pendant, but this Pilar means that it is associated with Spain in particular.
38:48Exactly.
38:49Yeah.
38:50I mean, did this come here on a Spanish ship?
38:53I would definitely call that treasure.
38:55For sure, right?
38:56Absolutely.
38:57And lots of people traveling by ship would carry things like that.
38:59Yeah, exactly.
39:00The ship would be full of things like that.
39:02I mean, think about this.
39:03We're in this area where these skeletons were found, where there is this story, this long-standing story that pirates or Spaniards were here, and this is a Spanish medal.
39:14Right.
39:15Right within the space that we set is where the X marks the spot.
39:18X marks the spot.
39:19X marks the spot.
39:20Yeah.
39:21That is beautiful.
39:22Yeah.
39:23Guys, I think we just saved the goondocks.
39:25Yeah.
39:26Right?
39:27Oh.
39:28I feel like it's the end of the movie.
39:30The sun is setting.
39:31We're here on the beach.
39:32You guys are going to come live with me now.
39:34I'm going to take care of you, because I love you.
39:36All right.
39:37What am I, sloth?
39:38Well, you know.
39:39Guys, I'm just saying.
39:41I'm just saying.
39:42I feel very emotional right now.
39:43Yeah.
39:44I wonder what else is down here.
39:46Well, we're not leaving.
39:47Yeah.
39:48We're not leaving.
39:49Don't worry.
39:50All right.
39:51Back to it.
39:52Let's search this whole area.
39:53Who knows?
39:54There could be a bag of treasure right beneath this.
39:55Exactly.
39:56Unbelievable.
39:57Guys.
39:58Yeah.
39:59Nice work.
40:00Excellent.
40:01Amazing.
40:02Fantastic.
40:03When I first saw the Goonies, I was just a kid.
40:06And if you can't tell yet, it stayed with me ever since.
40:10The fun, the friendships, the adventure.
40:13To me, these weren't just elements of childish escapist fantasy.
40:17They were all the things that I dreamed of having in my life.
40:21Well, a lot has happened since then.
40:23This is crazy.
40:24I've gotten to experience adventure more than I could have ever imagined.
40:33Look at that.
40:34Wow.
40:35I have a steadfast crew who has walked every step with me, no matter how perilous.
40:41Hell no!
40:42Hell no!
40:43Ha!
40:44And fun.
40:46I'm alive!
40:47God!
40:48Kind of just trying to focus on the straight ahead here.
40:53Oh, snake.
40:54Back up, back up, back up.
40:56Maybe this would have been my life without the Goonies.
41:00But I doubt it.
41:01And the legend here in Oregon that became the basis for the film is part of that.
41:06Whoa!
41:07Life inspired art, which in turn inspired life.
41:11Mine and countless others like me.
41:14That's why I'm certain that someone someday will find this treasure and other buried treasures like it.
41:21There are too many of us for them to stay hidden forever.
41:24After all, we're Goonies and Goonies never say die.
