00:00Welcome to the show, Mark.
00:28Thank you for having me.
00:29Happy to be here.
00:31I'm sure that you've been busy and Physical Asia is one of my favorite shows.
00:34Thanks for watching.
00:35I've been watching that.
00:36So please do describe your experience with Physical Asia and what was the most challenging
00:41part for you?
00:42I mean, the whole experience was just such an adventure, you know.
00:46We shot in Korea, in Seoul, Korea and just an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.
00:54And for me, the most challenging part, well definitely there's so much strategy involved
00:58and you really have to work together.
01:00But for me, the hardest challenge was probably the ball wrestling challenge against Sunny
01:04from Thailand, just because that was so brutal and really, really exhausting.
01:08Right.
01:09But I'm just curious, how was the team selected?
01:11They reached out to us.
01:14So when they, actually it's funny, when they first contacted me, I thought it was a joke.
01:18I thought it was a scam, actually.
01:20And then when I started chatting with them via Zoom, I was like, oh my gosh, this is real.
01:26Like, okay, alright, game on, let's go.
01:28So Korea was the one who selected?
01:31Yes, yes.
01:32So they reached out to all the contestants and formed the teams.
01:36And how does it feel to be one of the players?
01:39Oh, it was a huge honor.
01:40And of course, a ton of pressure.
01:42It was funny, when I saw that Manny Pacquiao was on our team, I couldn't believe it.
01:47And then of course, you know, the pressure came with that, but definitely a huge honor.
01:51Yeah, I saw their faces when Manny Pacquiao was like walking.
01:54It was the highlight of the day, actually.
01:56Yes, yes.
01:57Like everybody, no matter what country you came from, they were all amazed with Manny Pacquiao.
02:02All the seasoned athletes and world-class athletes from all the different countries, when he came in, you know, all their eyes lit up.
02:08He's a legend, of course.
02:10But what was going through your mind when you were suspended in the air for two hours?
02:14Honestly, I was just trying to slow down.
02:18Well, no, not slow down time, because that would make it even longer.
02:22Just trying to relax and be one with the ropes and just like calm my mind and my heart rate and keep everything slow and steady.
02:29Because I knew it would be, you know, that kind of challenge is really just like a mental game and about muscle endurance and pain tolerance.
02:37So I was just trying to slow it all down and, you know, just try my best to win.
02:42Well, I think I was chatting to you there. I see like both of the athletes there was crossing their legs initially.
02:48Yes, yeah, yeah. So I noticed that one of the contestants crossed her legs, so I copied that right away.
02:55And the funny thing is we're all looking at each other, trying to like size each other up.
02:58Like because we could hear basically the way it was framed was everyone was behind us.
03:03All of our teammates were behind us.
03:04But we're staring off into this like black abyss.
03:07You know, so there's nothing in front of us, but like black abyss and like cameras, but all the cameras are hidden.
03:12So, you know, I mean, you're just looking into the black abyss and, you know, you look to them to see how they're doing and then back into the abyss.
03:20And you could hear all the teammates behind like cheering for you or talking trash, you know, just from the other teams.
03:26So it was, yeah, it was a grueling challenge.
03:29Just imagine two hours. I can't imagine staying for like stationary for two hours.
03:35Now you train in multiple disciplines, sambo, wrestling, aikido, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts.
03:41Yes.
03:42How have these sports helped you in physical Asia? And do you think you have an advantage?
03:47Yeah, I mean, I mean, it really depends on the challenge, right? Because especially with this team format, you know, the rules for every single person.
03:56And that's where there's so much strategy that's involved in, you know, where to put your players for every single challenge.
04:02But yeah, I've been doing sports my whole life. I started wrestling when I was seven or eight years old.
04:08And I've been doing martial arts and different sports my whole life.
04:11So definitely, you know, I have a high level of fitness and I think just being committed to sports and making it part of my lifestyle, you know, helped me, helped me for the show.
04:21And being a, being a martial artist definitely helped me for the show.
04:24Because I have, I pride myself on having a mental toughness that comes from years of wrestling and grinding with sambo and wrestling.
04:32So I was able to bring that to the show.
04:35Speaking of which, how did you prepare physically and mentally?
04:39Yeah, I prepared like it was for a fight, actually. I prepared for like it was for an MMA fight.
04:45So I just did really hard strength and conditioning. I didn't spar, of course, because I knew it wasn't a fight show.
04:50But I did really hard strength and conditioning leading up to the traveling to Korea.
04:55And yeah, I guess that's where the nerves kick in, too, because you don't know what the challenges are until you get there, until you walk out onto set.
05:05With a fight, you know, you know who you're fighting and you can prepare and study their techniques and, you know, like make game plans.
05:11But for this type of format, you know, you have no idea. You just walk onto set and you see the challenge and you're like, alright, here we go.
05:17So that was the part that made me a little bit nervous. But really, you know, I just brought my best shape and just tried to do my best.
05:25Did you, like, train as a team prior to the physical action?
05:29No, we all met in Korea, actually. We all just met in Korea, so that was the tricky part.
05:34But I knew Justin Hernandez before that. He's the only guy that I met before that. We worked out together years ago.
05:40But how was your relationship when you guys went together?
05:45Yeah, good vibes. All team Philippines, we all got along well. Everyone clicked and we knew that we're working together and we're trying to, you know, win it to win it.
05:57And even all the other athletes from the other countries, everyone's a good sport, you know.
06:01I think because there's such a high level of competitors and athletes that there's really a lot of respect and just good sportsmanship overall.
06:09Right. Like everybody who competed in physical Asia are elite athletes.
06:13Yes.
06:14Being exposed with them, did it change your training style or mindset after being exposed with them?
06:25Yeah, I mean, I think I've always trained pretty hard and always, you know, trained a certain way.
06:33Because I've been, you know, I turned professional in MMA in 2009, so I've been at this game for a long time.
06:39But, you know, definitely, you know, working, competing against these other elite athletes definitely motivated me more and inspired me to, you know, continue pushing.
06:49There was this particular challenge, the first challenge, the territorial conquest. I'm quite curious, was that really your strategy and were you satisfied with the team's game plan?
07:04Yeah, you know, I mean, that one was, that was tricky and that was Justin Coveney's strategy, the Jeepney Blitz.
07:10Yeah.
07:11And, you know, honestly, it's really the best strategy given our size because we couldn't compete against countries like Turkey.
07:18In that particular challenge, we couldn't compete against countries like Turkey or Australia just because they're so much bigger than us, right?
07:25So, for that particular challenge, the best strategy really was to, the Jeepney Blitz, which was to wind down the clock and then just like find our way in and stay there when the clock ran out.
07:37Yeah, so.
07:38Yeah.
07:39But speaking of challenge, what, for you, what's the easiest and the hardest challenge?
07:43Honestly, there's no easy challenges on Physical Asia.
07:47Exactly.
07:48Yeah, there's no easy challenges.
07:50The hardest one was definitely the ball wrestling match with Sonny just because he's so big and, yeah, I had to really push to the limit in that one.
08:00The hanging match was in a close second just because it was just a mind game and, yeah, just really painful and grueling for two hours, 45 minutes.
08:11Australia came off very strong.
08:13Yes.
08:14Did it intimidate the entire team initially?
08:17Yeah, I think initially just because of their size, you know, I think they were the biggest physically.
08:24They had the biggest combined weight physically out of all the different countries.
08:29And, yeah, I remember seeing them in the dining hall when we first imagined them.
08:32I'm like, oh, UFC, ex-UFC champion Robert Whittaker's the captain.
08:36I'm like, all right, that's cool.
08:37Like, all right, let's do this.
08:39How did Manny Pacquiao motivate the entire team?
08:41He was the team captain of the team.
08:43Yes.
08:44Yeah, you know, I mean, Manny's a legend.
08:46Eight-time world champion and just a great guy to hang around and to be on set with.
08:52And he was giving us tips about diet and nutrition and just how to have longevity in that sport.
09:01With your entire experience in physical Asia, what are your takeaways?
09:05Any learning experience in that?
09:07Yeah, I think, you know, just to keep pushing and that, you know, I'm 37 years old now.
09:16And, you know, I'm still feeling strong and just to keep myself healthy just like Manny and some of these other athletes on the show.
09:23I think that's one of my biggest takeaways that, you know, I can keep pushing and that definitely inspired by the other athletes on the show.
09:31Speaking of takeaways, do you have any new goals?
09:35New goals?
09:36Yeah, I want to win some Sambo titles.
09:41We have the Asian Oceana Sambo Championships, which we're hosting here in Manila next year.
09:46So I'm looking forward to that and competing in that.
09:49And I'll probably go back to another MMA fight, maybe towards the later half of next year.
09:56Do you see, I mean, you have a lot of sporting disciplines, as I said a while ago.
10:02Do you plan on branching out to another sport?
10:05I was thinking about doing high rocks, actually.
10:08I knew it.
10:09Yeah, that's an interesting sport.
10:11I think I could do okay with the muscle endurance required in that.
10:16So, yeah, I've been thinking about high rocks, especially, I've been seeing it all over my feet these days.
10:22I think that's very popular right now.
10:24Yeah, it's getting quite popular.
10:25And you think, you know, for a high rocks athlete, that would be very beneficial for physical Asia.
10:30Yes.
10:31Now, given a chance to select athletes for the next season, top athletes for you to consider?
10:38For me, Chino C. He's one of my Sambo teammates.
10:43He's the heavyweight on our team.
10:45I think he'd do a great job.
10:48He's, yeah, Sambo champion, judo champion, UAP judo champion at UST.
10:55Other athletes.
11:01I think EJ Obiena could be good.
11:04He's a, yeah, he's an explosive fast runner and he has the length and the height.
11:09You know, sometimes, you know, with the show, you really do need the size and the frame, right?
11:14And we have countries like Australia and Korea, they're all quite tall.
11:17So, I think he could also be good.
11:20And that's a nice choice, actually.
11:23But another question for me.
11:25How does it feel to be, like for example, watching yourself in a Netflix movie?
11:30How does it feel to be there?
11:32To be there?
11:33To be watching it or to be there?
11:36Yeah, to be watching yourself in a Netflix movie.
11:39It's surreal, honestly.
11:41Because I was such a big fan of the first two seasons of physical 100, seasons one and two.
11:46And that's why when they reached out to me, I really thought it was a joke.
11:49I thought it was a scam.
11:50I'm like, no, this can't be real.
11:51Physical Asia?
11:52What's this, you know?
11:53Like they're changing the format.
11:54And then when I had the interview with them, I was like, oh my gosh, this is real.
11:58So, yeah, just a surreal experience overall.
12:00And yeah, awesome.
12:02But as an athlete, what is your proudest moment for you?
12:06Overall, in all sport, everything.
12:11I mean, physical Asia is definitely up there because it was such an amazing experience and
12:16honor to represent the Philippines.
12:19MMA, yeah, there's quite a few fights there that I'm proud of.
12:25Probably winning the URCC title against Ogyom Lee.
12:28That was a big one.
12:31Beating Harris Sarmiento at Arnetta in PXC.
12:35And winning the SEA Games gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games for Combat Sambo.
12:41That's another one.
12:42I just...
12:44Remember James?
12:45Yes.
12:46James from the show.
12:47How is James?
12:48Yeah, he's very blunt about having a crush on you.
12:52I mean, did he reach out?
12:54Maybe collaborate?
12:55Yeah, we've kept in touch actually.
12:58He's a good guy.
12:59He's so funny and super charismatic and hilarious guy.
13:04Future collaboration maybe?
13:06Not yet, but we might have something in store.
13:09So stay tuned for that.
13:11I believe so many people admires you.
13:13So what advice would you give to our young athletes wanting to try obstacle plays?
13:19Yeah, just keep training hard.
13:22You know, my goal ever since I started sport is just to get a little bit better every single day.
13:27You know, there are days that are definitely not as motivated.
13:30But to just keep pushing and look to get a little bit better every single day.
13:36Now, Mark, do you have any plans to participate in other international competitions or sporting events in the future?
13:43Yeah, I think High Rocks. High Rocks would be interesting.
13:48Definitely more Sambo competitions with the Philippine team.
13:51I mean, we are hosting the Asian Oceana games next year.
13:55But I like to keep traveling with the Philippine team and going to other foreign countries.
13:59I think that's so much fun.
14:00We went to Uzbekistan a few months ago to compete.
14:03And I just like traveling and, you know, exploring new cultures and, of course, competing with my teammates.
14:09So much to look forward to.
14:12They asked, I already asked this question for you.
14:15Who's your next physical Asia-Philippine athletes?
14:18Yeah, I think Gino C would be a great addition.
14:22My teammate and also EJ Obiena.
14:24EJ Obiena, Paul Volter.
14:27Explosive guy.
14:28Athletics, yeah.
14:29The height, he has the height.
14:31Yes, yes.
14:32Alright.
14:33Eto, teammates, thank you so much, Mark.
14:37For being with us.
14:39It's such a pleasure.
14:41Samantala, teammates, 17 days na lang at Pasko na.
14:48What's your wish this coming Christmas?
14:50It's just 17 days.
14:52Yeah, just coming up.
14:54I wish this coming Christmas.
14:56A nice vacation with my family and some downtime and a few beers and some good food.
15:01Good food and beers.
15:02Yes.
15:03As an athlete, you also have these cheat days.
15:05Of course.
15:06You can't redline and stay clean all the time forever.
15:11So I like to unwind and have all you can eat, Korean barbecue and stuff.
15:16But I'm good the next day to balance it out.
15:18It's all about balance.
15:19So after the holidays, back to workout and training.
15:22Yes, definitely.
15:23Actually through the holidays.
15:24I'll continue working on through the holidays.
15:25But my calorie intake will definitely shoot up.
15:29Thank you so much, Mark.
15:30I'm going to try.
15:31I'm going to try.
