00:00From Hollywood, the Jack Benny Program, with Jack's special guest, Frankie Avaloff.
00:30Thank you very, very much. Thank you, thank you. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the show.
00:44Now, before I get on with the program, you know, there's something I've been curious about, and I want to get it settled right now.
00:53You see, I get fan mail, of course, and I get letters every now and then.
00:57Once in a while, I get a letter from someone who says that I look much better wearing glasses, with my glasses on.
01:05You see, then I get letters from other people telling me that I look better with my glasses off, not wearing them.
01:12So, I thought that I'd like to get the opinion of you folks here in the studio audience, you see.
01:19So, when I put on, I'll put on my glasses, and those who like me better that way, please applaud.
01:27Now, now I'll remove my glasses, and, uh, if you like me better that way, those who do, please applaud again.
01:42Well, that's about 50-50, and I'm the kind of a guy, you know, that likes to please everybody, you see.
01:53So, anyway, to get on with the show, it's about the silliest thing I've ever done.
02:16Well, this won't work, I don't think.
02:18Proves one thing, though.
02:19I can certainly break a pair of glasses.
02:23Well, now that I've had my, uh, physical examination, I, um, I would like to introduce my guest star.
02:33Ladies and gentlemen, a young fellow who's not only popular with the younger set, but also with the adults,
02:42and probably one of the most sought-after entertainers and personalities in all of show business,
02:50Mr. Frankie Avalon.
02:51I'll never say never again, again, cause here I go again, and always in love again with you.
03:20And I'll never say never kiss you again, cause here I slide again, that's the thing I said I'd never do.
03:36Well, I thought that love was a frame-up, a game I'd never try, and once more I've taken that game up,
03:51And the ace of hearts is high, I'll never say never again, again, cause here I flip again,
04:05and always in love again with the same sweet and lovable you.
04:11Well, I walk around with a horseshoe, in clover I lie, and brother Abbott, of course you better kiss your to-to-to-tootsie goodbye.
04:27I'll never say never again and again, cause here I roll again, head over heels in love again with you, baby.
04:45Here I go, oh, one more time, yeah, one more time, play the game of love, love, hurry for love.
05:04Isn't he great?
05:23He really is.
05:24And you know, you're gonna be thrilled with his next number, because he asked me to accompany him.
05:33And I know what you're saying, you're saying to each other, now why?
05:37He speaks the first number so well, why would he want Jack to accompany him?
05:41Well, that's a good question, and I'd like to answer it.
05:43I'll tell you exactly how it happened.
05:45You know, a few weeks ago, before I even knew that Frankie Avalon was gonna be a guest on my show,
05:52I was here at the studio rehearsing, you see?
05:54And when I finished rehearsal, I went out the hall to get a soft drink.
06:01Oh, still busy, huh?
06:03Well, keep trying, operator.
06:06Yes, please, thank you very much.
06:10Hello, Mr. Benny.
06:11Hello.
06:12Hello.
06:12Oh, Frankie.
06:15Frankie Avalon.
06:16You didn't recognize me right away, did you?
06:18No.
06:18What are you doing here at the studio?
06:20I'm down the hall doing a recording session.
06:22Oh, making another record, huh?
06:24Yeah, I hope it's a hit, too.
06:26Oh, I'm sure it will be.
06:28You know, I went into a music store the other night, and I, um, yeah, the afternoon, rather,
06:33and I heard some records.
06:34They're yours, and Paul Anka's, and, uh, Fabian, and, uh, Bobby Rydell's.
06:41Well, it has been wonderful the way the public has accepted young talent.
06:46Hmm.
06:49Yes, I...
06:51We've, uh, we've really got it made, haven't we?
06:54We?
07:01Yeah, we.
07:03Well, you see, I use the word we always.
07:07I have a habit of saying we sort of, uh, well, the way Lindbergh just said it.
07:14Who?
07:20Lindbergh.
07:21Did he make any records?
07:25Well, yes, yes.
07:27In 1927, he made Paris in the spring.
07:40That was a good one.
07:42Yeah, but, you know, Frankie, now, I don't want to take anything away from you young
07:51fellas, you see, but the kind of songs that they're singing today, I never heard anything
07:57like it.
07:57I mean, they're ridiculous, like, oh, oh, ooh, ooh, ah, ah, ee, ee.
08:03I mean, what is that, anyway?
08:05E, ee, ah, ah.
08:07What is that?
08:07Well, that particular one is a ballad.
08:13A ballad?
08:15Oh, well, anyway, I'm serious.
08:17I mean, why do they, what do they want with those crazy sounds?
08:21Well, that's what makes them sell.
08:23You know, I mean, on the record that I'm doing today, we're looking for the same thing.
08:26We're trying to find a distinctive sound.
08:29We call it a gimmick.
08:31You mean you need that with songs now, huh?
08:33Sure, yes.
08:33Funny sounds and gimmicks.
08:34Right, gimmick sounds.
08:35Well, I guess you know what you're talking about.
08:37Well, anyway, it was nice running into you, Frank.
08:40Very nice seeing you.
08:40Oh, by the way, how would you like to be a guest on my, uh, television?
08:43Oh, excuse me, Mr. Benny, I'm expecting this call.
08:46Okay.
08:47Hello.
08:49Yes, I'll hold on.
09:03Yes, yes, speaking.
09:05You're still busy?
09:08Well, would you keep trying for me, operator, please?
09:13I have a call into my folks in Philadelphia.
09:16Oh.
09:16Now, what were you saying, Mr. Benny?
09:18Well, I, I wanted to ask you if you'd like to be a guest on one of my television shows.
09:23Gee, that'd be wonderful.
09:25Maybe you can get together with my agent.
09:27Your agent?
09:27Oh, Frankie, look at, I don't want to go through that all the time with agents.
09:31I mean, you and I can make a deal.
09:34Well, what do you have in mind?
09:37Well, I mean, you could come on my show and you could sing to your folks in Philadelphia and save a phone call.
09:45Well, it sounds like a tempting offer, but, well, my agent insists that whenever I appear on a television show, I have to get paid.
09:57Well, he has a point there, naturally.
10:00What is your regular fee?
10:02$10,000.
10:03$10,000.
10:19What?
10:21$10,000.
10:23$10,000?
10:24Yes.
10:25Well, my agent says that I should be compensated for all those rough years I put in on the way up.
10:30Well, tell your agent that I put in some pretty rough years, too, you know.
10:39The last time I gave anybody $10,000 was Rochester to put in my vault.
10:45Well, look, Frankie, we don't need your agent.
10:48Look, now, why don't you and I, if we can discuss the whole thing, you know, and come on my show, and I'll treat you real good.
10:56Hmm?
10:57All right.
10:58Okay.
10:58Well, right now, listen, I better get back to the studio, because they're probably waiting for me to start recording.
11:03Okay.
11:07Hello?
11:08Oh, I can't talk to you now, Pop, but watch the Jack Benny Show.
11:13I have a feeling I'll be singing to you.
11:16Okay.
11:17Bye.
11:18Well, it's very nice seeing you again, Mr. Benny.
11:20Okay, Frankie.
11:21So long.
11:21So long.
11:21Oh, wait a minute, Frankie.
11:23Listen, you know, I have never been in a... I've never watched anybody make a record, you know, do a recording.
11:30Do you mind if I go in with you? I've got all kinds of time.
11:32No, not at all.
11:33I'd like to see you.
11:34Just once.
11:34Come on, be glad to have you, sir.
11:37Frankie, we're all set.
11:38Anytime you're ready.
11:39Did you find the gimmick?
11:40Well, we try a lot of crazy sounds, Frankie, but none of them seem right.
11:43I know, but we need the gimmick.
11:45Well, look, if we haven't got one, then we'll just, you know, just do without it.
11:48Now, okay, fellas, everybody ready? We're gonna make this.
11:51I hate to do this to you, but before we record, do we have the last 16 bars to check the balance?
11:55Yeah, sure, okay. Take it from letter E.
11:57Right.
11:58Mr. Benny, it'll be all right if you sit over here, I guess.
12:00Oh, fine.
12:02Right here, be fine.
12:03Right here?
12:03Right here.
12:04All right, now, give me plenty of volume on the bass, huh?
12:07Right.
12:07I hope we can make this in one take, Frank.
12:09He's been rehearsing all morning.
12:11He's pretty tired.
12:15I love all the many charms about you.
12:25Above all, I want my arms above you.
12:43Don't be a naughty baby.
12:49Frankie, come to Papa, come to Papa, come to Papa, do my sweet embrace of you.
13:09That's good.
13:18Frankie, that was perfect.
13:19Now, let's put this one on tape, huh?
13:21Mr. Benny, I hope you realize this next one will be recording, so please, no applause.
13:27Oh, don't worry about it.
13:29All right, I don't know what to do.
13:31All right, everybody, let's make it and let's have it absolutely quiet.
13:35All right, please, red light, right on the downbeat.
13:42Embrace me, my sweet embrace of you.
13:52Embrace me, you air a place.
14:04Really, I'm terribly sorry.
14:16I didn't mean to do that, really, but there was no harm done, you see?
14:23I mean, it didn't even chip.
14:24Yeah, it's a shame, because you were going so good there.
14:33Say, Malin, while we're stopped, would you have the clarinet move in just a little bit?
14:37Yeah, wait, come in, just a little bit.
14:38All right, right.
14:40Oh.
14:41Okay, let's make it and let's have it absolutely quiet, please.
14:46Red light.
14:47Right from the top now, on the downbeat.
14:49Embrace me, my sweet embrace.
15:11Wait a minute, hold it.
15:14Hold it, wait a minute.
15:15Tom, hold it.
15:18Just a second.
15:19What's the matter?
15:21Well, look, when you, you see, when you ask the clarinet player to move up,
15:25you see, it sort of drowns out the guitar then.
15:29Get back.
15:31What?
15:32Mr. Benny.
15:33What?
15:33You're right about the clarinet drowning out the guitar.
15:37I know I'm right.
15:38But, you see, we have little instruments in here that control all that.
15:44Oh, will you just move back where you were, clarinet, please?
15:48Smart, Elliot.
15:50I don't know how you ever get a record made in here.
15:54I heard that.
15:56Man, so many microphones are running.
16:01All right, fellas, we're running a little late.
16:03Let's see if we can make this one a take.
16:05Red light.
16:06Now, watch it, please.
16:09Embrace me, my sweet embracable you.
16:25Embrace me, you air a place.
16:33Embrace me, my sweet embracable you.
16:38Just when they get in my heart, my heart is tipsy and cream.
16:44Cut, cut, cut, cut.
16:45Mr. Benny, would you please quit winding your watch?
16:51Sorry, you know, I thought it stopped.
16:54You see, but I noticed that it's just at one of Mickey's hands.
16:57Did I take you away from anything?
17:08No, no, for heaven's sakes.
17:10I've got all day.
17:12Don't worry about me.
17:13Frankie, could I see you just a minute, please?
17:20Frankie.
17:21Yes, sir?
17:21Frankie, you know the rule about no visitors while we're recording?
17:25Yeah.
17:25Gee, he's been in the business all these years.
17:27I thought he'd know enough to be quiet.
17:29Well, apparently he doesn't, so he's gonna have to leave the studio.
17:31Now, you're gonna have to ask him to leave.
17:34Oh, I couldn't do that.
17:35I can't insult him.
17:36He's an institution.
17:38I mean, insulting Mr. Benny would be like,
17:41like insulting Abraham Lincoln.
17:47I'm not asking you to take a shot at him.
17:52Just ask him to leave.
17:54Now, go on.
17:55Ask him to leave.
17:55I can't do it.
17:57Well, at least ask him to be quiet.
17:59All right.
18:03Look, Abe, here's...
18:08Mr. Benny, uh, well, well, well, what I'm trying to say is that, well, we're...
18:22Mr. Benny, what Frankie is trying to say is that we're making a recording,
18:26and we only have about three minutes left to finish it,
18:29or we go into overtime.
18:31So, could we please have it quiet?
18:34Oh, certainly, of course.
18:36I'm sorry.
18:37Quiet, everybody.
18:38Everybody quiet.
18:40Quiet.
18:43Go ahead, you know.
18:44You're holding him up.
18:45All right, everybody.
18:49We're at my...
18:51Embrace me, my sweet embrace of love.
19:08Embrace me, you were a place of love.
19:18Just one look at you, my heart grew, tipsy in me.
19:28You and you alone bring out the tipsy in me.
19:33Hold it, hold it, Clif.
19:43I'll kill that guy.
19:44I'll murder him.
19:47Mr. Benny.
19:48Mr. Benny.
19:49Mr. Benny.
19:50Mr. Benny.
19:51Mr. Benny, I've had about all I can stand,
19:53and you're just gonna have to get out of the studio.
19:55That's all.
19:55Just get out.
19:56Clif, wait a minute.
19:57What?
19:57He's got it.
19:59He's got it.
19:59The sound.
20:00The sound we've been looking for.
20:02The gimmick for the song.
20:05He's got it.
20:06Abe's got it.
20:09I got it.
20:11The sound you wanted.
20:12The gimmick.
20:13I got it.
20:14He's got it.
20:14I got it.
20:15Let's go.
20:15Let's go.
20:15Let's go.
20:15Let's go.
20:45Well, everybody ready?
20:48Anytime you are, Jack.
20:49Fine, fine.
20:50Uh, would you bring in my instrument, please?
21:08Uh, my music.
21:09Could I have A, please?
21:28Mr. Benny, be sure and take your cue from me.
21:30I will.
21:31Embrace me, my sweet embrace of me.
21:51Embrace me, you ear of play.
21:57Jack will be back with his guest, Frankie Avalon.
22:25Thank you, thank you again, ladies and gentlemen.
22:38I hope you all enjoyed the show.
22:41Now, I know that you laughed, of course, at that instrument that I played, but I've got news for you.
22:47Next week, I'm giving a concert at the Philharmonic.
22:51It's going to be a long one.
22:53I'm going to play ten and a half gallons.
22:55And now, I'd like to present my guest star, once more, Frankie Avalon.
23:10Frankie, it was just wonderful having you on the show.
23:12Always a lot of fun.
23:13And, uh, that was some record we made.
23:16Do you think it'll be a hit?
23:18Well, I don't think it'll ever be another E, E, I...
23:22Well, so long.
23:27Thank you, Frankie.
23:28Good night.
23:33Well, good night, folks.
23:35And I'll be seeing you soon.
