00:01The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
00:05Ahoy there, ladies!
00:08Stars from Britain's best-loved shows are jetting off for a holiday showdown.
00:13Is anyone else nervous? Yeah.
00:15Legends of Corrie, I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here,
00:18Loose Women and The Chase are competing against their fellow castmates.
00:24Hey, no road rage, please.
00:26To prove they can deliver the best holiday adventure.
00:30You like that break a bit too much.
00:31I'm not even pressing the break.
00:33Each famous face...
00:34Can we get back to coronation quickly?
00:36O-M-G.
00:37DJ Destroyer!
00:38Will plan their dream day in the sun.
00:40We are Loose Women. Together we can do anything.
00:43And at the end of the week...
00:45They'll vote to decide who will be crowned the greatest escaper.
00:50Are we all thinking, I want to win?
00:52Yeah.
00:53Only one of us can be the greatest escaper.
00:56Who is it gonna be?
01:00The Greek island of Rhodes.
01:05The beating heart of the spectacular Dodecanese Archipelago.
01:10Teeming with stunning scenery, rich culture and ancient history,
01:14this Aegean bolt hole is the perfect escape for the UK's brightest minds.
01:20Time to face the chaser, but who are we taking on today?
01:23Yep.
01:24This week's great escapers all star in the nation's favourite quiz show.
01:28The chase.
01:29The chase is on.
01:31The first brain box to check in is the chaser OG, Mark the Beast Labette.
01:39Am I the best chaser? Yes.
01:41As you see I'm quite tall.
01:42Have you got any extended leg room seats?
01:45Yeah, so you're in what?
01:46The joys of being six or seven on a good day.
01:49I obviously love and respect my colleagues, but there's a competition.
01:53Yeah, we're gonna do something you want to win.
01:54I think my dream holiday is somewhere quite cool, some a bit of historical interest.
02:00You're extremely unlikely to find me lying on a sunbed basket in the sun.
02:04Battling Mark to be crowned Greatest Escaper is Jenny the Vixen Ryan.
02:10I come from a competitive family.
02:12This does feel like possibly Christmas with the Ryan family,
02:16because everybody wants to win.
02:19Lovely, and if you just press the green buttons next to me.
02:22I'm quite used to pressing a buzzer.
02:24Bye bye bag.
02:25There it goes.
02:26I think mine's gonna be the best day.
02:29I'm sure they've got some lovely stuff planned,
02:32but who do I need to bribe to win?
02:34And the last chaser battling it out to be top dog
02:37is criminal barrister Sean the Dark Destroyer Wallace.
02:41My dream holiday would be lots of cultural places of interest,
02:45so Greece in particular being the cradle of civilisation
02:48is a wonderful place to actually come and learn.
02:50Where are you flying Tuesday?
02:52Dodecanese, the centre, which is Rose. Did you know that?
02:54No, I didn't know that.
02:55Oh dear, oh dear. I'm only showing off.
02:56Mark, Jenny and myself are here to compete.
02:58At the end of the day, they may have a great idea
03:01in terms of their holiday plans, but I'm telling you now,
03:04I'm gonna win this.
03:05How are you, bruv? Not too bad. You good?
03:07Yeah, and I'm already one up on you
03:09because I made sure I got extra leg room on my flight.
03:17I'll see you on the other side.
03:18All right, Jen.
03:19Gina's gonna talk to us.
03:21The chasers are jetting off to Rhodes,
03:24nicknamed the Island of Sun
03:26in honour of the sun god Helios.
03:28Well, here we are.
03:30That's all right, isn't it?
03:31Not bad at all.
03:32Yeah.
03:35Sean is very sporty.
03:37I'm expecting he's brought a lot of lycra clothing with him.
03:40Jenny, I had no idea.
03:42I could see some vixen-esque tricks,
03:45which might be interesting.
03:46Mark can be sometimes a little bit distracted
03:49in terms of disorganised chaos.
03:51I hope he has organised something.
03:53Mark, Jenny and Sean will take turns
03:55to plan their dream day on holiday.
03:57At the end, they'll vote to decide who is the winner.
04:00So, to quote Bradley, the chase is on.
04:03Yamas.
04:04Yamas.
04:05Yamas.
04:06Ultimately, we're chasers.
04:07We want to win.
04:08We want to be competitive and also show each other
04:10who we really are.
04:12Have you been to Greece?
04:13No.
04:14Why not?
04:15First time in Greece?
04:16Yep.
04:17I find that surprising, actually.
04:18a bit of a disadvantage not knowing about roads and Greece.
04:21Oh, yeah.
04:22I would say, except for...
04:23You know I'm a genius.
04:24I'm going to win.
04:25See, look, it's coming out already.
04:26The competitive instinct.
04:27The pressure's really on.
04:28First out of the traps
04:29and you are entertaining us for the day.
04:31Keeping us busy and occupied.
04:32I wouldn't worry about being busy and occupying.
04:34Some of the activities I've got for you,
04:35you'll be lucky to survive it.
04:36Oh, dear.
04:37Well, I'm ready.
04:38Oh, dear.
04:39May you the best.
04:40Chase will win.
04:41And I hope that's me.
04:42Cheers.
04:43I hope it's me.
04:44I know it's me.
04:45It's the morning of day one of the competition.
04:50Mark's first to host and he's masterminding the plan
04:53for his perfect day out with customer helper, Gio.
04:56Mark.
04:57Hello, Gio.
04:58How are you?
04:59Do I want to win at the end of the week?
05:00Oh, yes.
05:01We want to win all the time.
05:03We're actually legally bound to try as hard as we can all the time.
05:07It's in our contract.
05:08People go, do you go easy on people?
05:09Never.
05:10Ever.
05:11I would love to visit Rhodes Old Town.
05:14I'd love to do something historical or history of Rhodes.
05:18I'm fairly confident my colleagues were also like,
05:20well, we're professional quiz bellers.
05:21We're always trying to learn things.
05:22Of course.
05:23We don't mind walking, but Sean is 65 and, unfortunately,
05:27he's got bad knees.
05:28I've got a touch of arthritis, so we've got to accept
05:31that we have certain limitations.
05:33Yeah.
05:34I've got a little idea in mind that doesn't require walking
05:36for you to get to see the Mandarahi Harbour.
05:39Oh.
05:40We're all competitive in our own little way.
05:41We always want to play hard and play to win,
05:43but, I mean, Mark takes that competitive level
05:45to another stratosphere, I think.
05:47He always has done.
05:48He plays to win.
05:49Yeah.
05:50Whatever he's doing.
05:51For my sins, many, many years ago,
05:53I was the Oxford University shot foot champion.
05:55Oh, wow.
05:56And given the Olympic tradition of Greece,
05:57I don't mind demonstrating the shot or discus.
06:00You'd in luck.
06:01Of course, yeah.
06:02Rhodes is home to one of the most ancient Olympic stadiums.
06:05Oh, that'd be great.
06:06Yeah.
06:07I'm used to seeing him in full work modes.
06:08Yeah.
06:09You know, he's the boss man.
06:10He looks like he could be throwing you out of a nightclub.
06:12Exactly.
06:13So, seeing him off duty, it could be a whole different mark.
06:16And then, in the evening, what are your thoughts?
06:19Well, shock, horror, we all like a quiz.
06:21I've been hosting quizzes for a long, long time now in pubs and clubs.
06:25So, you actually want to do the quiz then?
06:26You want to host it?
06:27Oh, yeah.
06:28Oh, perfect.
06:29It's the best job in town.
06:30Absolutely.
06:31You know, leave that kind of with me and I will get the ball rolling.
06:34Desperate to quench his thirst for knowledge,
06:37Mark's kicking things off in the stone labyrinth
06:40that is the medieval city of Rhodes.
06:44We're all history buffs.
06:46We have to be doing this show.
06:47When we go round the old town,
06:49I'll be clocking anything that, ooh,
06:51that would be a nice, handy little thing to know.
06:53Pretty special, isn't it?
06:55Yeah. Everywhere you turn, different bits of architecture.
06:58You've got Hellenic, Byzantine, Ottoman, Christian, you name it.
07:03I love it, you're doing my job for me.
07:05I have been here before, mate.
07:06Yeah.
07:07Unlike Mark, who's still trying to find his bearings.
07:10The fact we're walking back with him for
07:12doesn't mean in any way, shape or form I'm lost.
07:15This is your day, you're supposed to be organised, Mark.
07:17I know.
07:18I've got much shorter legs than those two, for one thing.
07:20It might get a bit grumpy around here, if we're not careful.
07:24It's a little stroll up to see the vista that is the old town of Rhodes.
07:29Are you joking?
07:30Have you seen the grading on this?
07:31I'm going to do a diva strop now.
07:33Absolutely not.
07:34Diva strop?
07:35No.
07:36It's hot.
07:37I don't mind walking, but I don't want to be walking forever,
07:38especially with my dodgy knees.
07:40Fortunately for Mark, Gio suggested an alternative.
07:43Ta-da!
07:44You've got two choices, walk or this.
07:48Wow.
07:49Do I have a choice?
07:50No, get on!
07:51To save all their weary legs, Mark's hired these eco-friendly segues to take the strain instead.
07:57Mark is full of surprises, isn't he?
08:03Why is he making that noise?
08:05I don't know.
08:06I think it's sort of everyone's going.
08:07Sean Wallace, actual age 65, emotional age 6.
08:15Hey, don't be aggressive.
08:19No road rage, please.
08:22While the mean streets of Rhodes Harbour might be an unusual spot for an F1 race,
08:28it does give Mark the chance to show off his mega brain.
08:31What's this statue?
08:33Well, we need our tour guide.
08:35This is one of the possible sites for the Colossus of Rhodes.
08:38Whoa.
08:39Who, according to legend, his two legs stood either side of the harbour mouth entrance.
08:44So, as you might imagine, if he's in proportion, that's one pretty big statue back in those days.
08:49And it was damaged in an earthquake, and I bet he knows the date.
08:53324 BC.
08:55Of course.
08:56You knew, innit?
08:57And then the bronze that was used to make the skeleton was actually taken away and used to make cannons.
09:02You know what?
09:03For a man who's never been to Rhodes before, you've got a remarkable knowledge, mate.
09:06Well done.
09:07I'm impressed with that.
09:08They probably would have modelled the Colossus of Rhodes on Mark, really.
09:11I mean, given his height, he's about 6'7", isn't he?
09:13I mean, he's forever up there.
09:14Oh, no.
09:15There's a cat.
09:16Jenny will stop.
09:17Hello, my darlings.
09:18How do they know that you're a crazy cat person?
09:22What's the Greek word?
09:23Allurophile, isn't it?
09:24Yeah.
09:25Allurophile.
09:26Allurophile.
09:27Means a lover of cats.
09:28I am an allurophile.
09:29Yeah.
09:30And it's not just cats catching the eye.
09:32Right.
09:33We've got some flags here, guys.
09:34Oh, look.
09:35There's a Spanish flag there.
09:36OK.
09:37I'm expecting them all.
09:38Explanations of each.
09:39OK.
09:40That's Danish.
09:41The world's oldest flag.
09:42World's oldest.
09:43Yeah.
09:44OK.
09:45That's Norway.
09:46Yep.
09:47Sweden.
09:48Sweden.
09:49I think that's Belgium.
09:50That looks like Belgium to me.
09:51France.
09:52Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
09:53Sean was pretty good pretty fast, but it was a fatal quizzes mistake, actually.
09:57Easily done.
09:58They're both white and blue.
09:59So, being the generous soul I am, I will never, ever let him forget it.
10:04OK.
10:05I slipped up with Finland.
10:06Well, I'm a vexicologist, you know.
10:08That's another Greek word for flag studies.
10:11You're dark.
10:13I think the days go pretty well, so far.
10:15I think they love the little buggies, because it must save them walking around.
10:18But I know they're very clever and cunning people, so they may have even better.
10:21Uh, days planned.
10:22Well done, bruv.
10:23Thanks, bud.
10:24Well done.
10:25This has been a real laugh, yeah.
10:26Great stuff.
10:27Oh, well again.
10:28And we've learned some things.
10:29What a great experience.
10:30A massive holiday takeoff.
10:32It's going to be, uh, quite difficult to top.
10:34But guess what?
10:35I'm going to top it.
10:36Shame about the, uh, Finnish flag being mistake for the Greek one, but we can't be perfect.
10:40Thank you, Mark.
10:41It's OK.
10:51Unpack, then swim, or jump right in.
10:54Darling, hold my head.
10:57The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
11:01Sunbed snoozing, or speedboat cruising.
11:04Darling, hold my head.
11:07The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
11:12Three of the UK's favourite chasers are on a Greek odyssey, battling it out to be crowned the Greatest Escaper.
11:23Today, Mark the Beast Libet is running the show, and he's hoping another historic landmark will give him the winning edge.
11:31I'm taking you somewhere with a bit of sporting history.
11:34OK.
11:35I'm seeing some ruins.
11:36Yes.
11:37It's to do with the history of sport.
11:39OK.
11:40Ooh, two things you love?
11:41Two things I love.
11:42Is it like an old amphitheatre or something like that?
11:44Yeah, it's a stadium.
11:45Oh, wow.
11:46Yeah, all the seating's still there.
11:48Yeah, yeah.
11:502,000 years ago, this stadium regularly hosted the Helion Games, a major sporting festival similar to the ancient Olympics.
11:57Oh, wow.
11:58It's amazing, isn't it?
11:59And you see, you could still just about have a trot round there.
12:02But Mark's not here for a quick trot.
12:04I've always loved sport.
12:05I was the Oxford University shot put champion back in 1985.
12:09So, going to demonstrate a little bit of shot put.
12:12Well done, bruv.
12:13Oh.
12:14Well done.
12:15While I was up at Oxford, I wasn't the brightest.
12:17I was ninth out of ninth when it came to the maths, and I won't dispute that.
12:20But I did a lot of sport up there, which was great fun.
12:23Right, the secret with any form of a throwing event is generally to start low and slow.
12:28Slow and slow.
12:29And end up high and fast.
12:30Acceleration.
12:31So, acceleration.
12:32OK.
12:33The last thing I think when I'm planning a holiday is that I'm going to be whizzing about chunks of iron in a stadium from 2,000 years ago.
12:40But, hey, it's a first time for everything.
12:43So, something like, and tuck it in and drive!
12:47Oh!
12:48Oh, that's horrible.
12:49That's literally a third of what I used to be able to do.
12:51You say that.
12:52It's going to be better than anything we do.
12:53Yeah, but don't forget, it was my sport before I got old and fat.
12:56Shotput's a very unforgiving sport if you haven't got the basic strength.
13:01I used to have decent arms.
13:02Not anymore.
13:03You've still got the technique, though, eh?
13:05Yeah, I know.
13:06That's about the only thing I've got.
13:07I've lost a lot of strength.
13:09For me, it was a bit embarrassing.
13:11Ah!
13:12Probably the least surprising thing of the day is knowing that Mark got all the way to Oxford
13:17Junior and then let sport distract him from his studies.
13:21So, up here?
13:22Yeah, that's it.
13:23Start as low as comfortable and try and drive up.
13:26See, that was it.
13:27Good.
13:28Well done.
13:31The lower you can get, the better, and then you can really jump and push up.
13:34Yeah, so you're not bad at all.
13:36That's pretty good.
13:37Oh, yeah.
13:38Look.
13:39Hey, it might be a new sport for you.
13:41I don't know, man.
13:42It's 65.
13:43I don't think so.
13:44Yeah, dear.
13:45It was really fantastic to basically take part in a sport which he was a champion at,
13:49and I learned what he told me, and I thought I did quite well.
13:52We've had very Mark things, and we've had some surprises, so it's really hard to figure
13:57out what's going to be next.
13:59I'm going to ask you this.
14:00Before you became a chaser, how did you see your life going?
14:04Because you were a teacher, but you didn't want to be a headmaster, presumably.
14:07No, I was massively underachieving as a teacher.
14:09I knew I was very good at it, which gave me a sense of pride, but I wasn't worried about
14:13my career at all.
14:14I was just drifting through life, didn't know what I wanted to do.
14:17But then the job I was born to do first appeared in June 2009, which absolutely suited my skill
14:23set, both in terms of memory and the personality.
14:27I envy people who did know what they want to be. I never did.
14:30I always wanted to be a lawyer, ever since I was 11 years old.
14:33But educational standards 40 to 50 years ago had a low expectation if you had my colour skin.
14:37When I was 12 years old, I wrote to the bar council, and I remember when I brought that
14:40letter to my career teacher, and she looked at me and she said,
14:43You're a lawyer, Wallace. At best, you're going to end up working in the factory, but
14:46something like you is going to end up in prison.
14:48She was right about me ending up in prison, and after I haven't seen my client, I'm going
14:52to go home again.
14:53You've had to work several times as hard to get where you are.
14:56Yeah, but the one thing I was always determined to ensure that the only person who can control
15:00my destiny is me.
15:01Absolutely.
15:02Sean and I are similar-ish in age, but I was really lucky to be at school where they
15:07positively encourage you. You know, whereas Sean got so much discouragement, and it was
15:11only a sheer will and determination got him to where he is.
15:15One of the great aspects of this whole journey with Jenny and Mark, I'm getting to know them
15:19even more, and that's going to be a wonderful thing.
15:22As dusk falls, Mark's rushed ahead to prepare for the show-stopping finale to his day.
15:29I'm doing an activity I know I'm good at, and I know they like. I am in the zone, famous
15:36last words.
15:37Right, what's it got us doing now?
15:39Hold on, hold on.
15:40Oh.
15:41Oh.
15:42Oh, I get it now.
15:43It's...
15:44Don't tell me it's a busman's holiday, eh?
15:47Okay, Jen.
15:48It's Mark's day.
15:49Yeah.
15:50Let's go and enjoy it.
15:51When we walked in, we saw that Botox image of Mark at the Battle of the Beast, then we
15:54knew it was a quiz.
15:55They're probably thinking, I wish I'd got there first, because we all do it, but to be
15:59fair, I think I write more than the other two do.
16:02And even if I say so myself, I think I'm not too shabby at it.
16:05Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Battle of the Beast.
16:13I'm going to join this lovely team here.
16:16Oh, it's glamorous.
16:17The old smoothie with three lovely ladies.
16:19He'll be very happy.
16:20Me and Jenny are quizzers.
16:21We're professionals.
16:22So, I'm here to beat her.
16:23My money's more on Jenny than Sean.
16:26Cheers, by the way, ladies.
16:27Cheers.
16:28To the winning team.
16:29To the winning team.
16:30Yes.
16:31Question number one.
16:32Which Russian fighter pilot became the first man in space on April the 12th, 1961?
16:39Very good.
16:40I've always liked quiz shows watching as a kid.
16:42I probably realised I had the perfect memory for a quizzer.
16:46Probably by the early 30s, I realised, yeah, I was pretty good.
16:50Which law, named after a fictional Irishman, states that anything that can go wrong will
16:56go wrong?
16:57I think when Mark is up there hosting an event, the Beast has to come through.
17:02I think the Beast is his uber-confident, strong side.
17:06The Metropolitan Police was founded in 1829, but which Scottish city had its own police force
17:14in 1800, nearly 30 years before?
17:17When we're doing the chase, we always say we might go for the percentage answer,
17:20because Edinburgh's got such a long history.
17:22Yeah.
17:23Can we swap papers, please?
17:24Why are you doing them all?
17:25I'm going to mark it, please.
17:26I can't wait to do this part.
17:28It's going to be beautiful.
17:29High culture, boom, boom, boom, boom, and we're going to Ibiza.
17:32Could only be the Wenger Boys, would it be?
17:34Wenger Boys.
17:35It's spelled Wenger Boys.
17:36Officially, it's pronounced Wenger Boys.
17:37Yeah, Wenger.
17:38Now I have some real sympathy for Bradley.
17:41The Scottish city that had a police force 30 years before they met, Glasgow.
17:48Oh, we were flicked the kind.
17:51What a fool.
17:52Neither of us got that right, so that's a great question.
17:55That's one wrong answer each.
17:57The Sean-Jenny face-off all comes down to the final question.
18:01Who is the only nation to have not actually won the Rugby World Cup despite making the final?
18:07Jenny's vixens put South Africa, but I'm afraid my learned friend knew the three times France had lost.
18:14So France the answer to well done.
18:18It was good to win the quiz.
18:19It was no surprise to be fair.
18:21You know why?
18:22Because I was at the last World Cup final.
18:23Well done.
18:25As hard as I've tried to learn for work purposes, I just don't care enough.
18:30Sorry, Rugby Union fans.
18:32I'm a league girl.
18:33Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for your hosts.
18:36The Beast!
18:37The Beast!
18:39It's just a really lovely night and a really lovely way to round off this day in truth.
18:43Mark's style.
18:44That was a really good quiz.
18:46I'm glad you liked it.
18:47Well done.
18:48Great day.
18:49Mark's day was fantastic, actually.
18:50And finishing off with a quiz is really good.
18:52And not tomorrow.
18:53It's your day.
18:54So we're going to have a fantastic day.
18:55I've done my bit.
18:56I think it's gone quite well.
18:58I hope to get some decent scores.
19:00If they want to score me two out of ten, they'll entirely win the prerogative.
19:03But hopefully a pretty good job.
19:05Come on.
19:10Calamira.
19:12Today, Jenny's in the hot seat and she's been busy planning how to get one over her fellow chasers.
19:18I think I'm going to be crowned the greatest escaper because I've put a lot of thought into activities that we will all get something from.
19:27I think we'll all get a kick out of what I've got lined up.
19:31Roads, it's not just coast.
19:33Yes.
19:34There's other stuff going on.
19:35And I really like getting out into the countryside and seeing what the rural life is.
19:39You know, you've come to the right place if that's the sort of thing you want.
19:42Because roads, it's packed with, you know, local traditions.
19:44I've seen the little sesame honey snacks everywhere.
19:47Yes.
19:48Greece as a whole is really famous for its honey.
19:50It's some of the best in the world.
19:52Although Jenny's a wonderful colleague, I don't really know her.
19:54I don't really know her interests.
19:55It's going to be fascinating to see what she's going to plan.
19:58I haven't got a clue.
19:59The only thing I know about Jenny is that she supports Born Wanderers and that's it.
20:03I've been to Greece a couple of times before and I've always enjoyed the food.
20:07Good.
20:08I am not convinced that the lads are much for cooking, but sometimes you have to challenge yourself.
20:15How about something like a cooking class where you can prepare the dish with the guys and then you can actually all enjoy it together?
20:22I would love that.
20:23You set the bar high, son, so you've got to try and clear it now.
20:27Yeah, but I know how competitive we all are.
20:31You kind of had to.
20:32Mark and Sean are both examples of people you'd think were the alphas.
20:35Go on.
20:36All aboard.
20:37But I think they quite like that I don't mind being a bit bossy, getting them organised, getting them where they need to be and I don't mind being the boss for once.
20:47Buckle up, boys, because the first stop on Jenny's rural adventure is taking you deep into the countryside, just outside the village of Pashtida.
21:00Welcome to the Rhodes Bee Museum.
21:03Bees?
21:04Bees.
21:05We're going to get some honey ourselves.
21:07We're going to be beekeepers.
21:09I'm embracing my inner Winnie the Pooh.
21:11BEEE!
21:13I really love the outdoors and nature.
21:15Bees are so, so important to the ecology of the entire world.
21:19I know you love cats, but where does your love of bees come to play?
21:23I've grown up, you know, in the town centre, so for my family, for me and my mum in particular, getting out into the countryside was always so important, seeing green things and flowers and the birds.
21:35Rhodes is one of the cradle of ancient civilization and according to the Greek gods, the drink of the gods was nectar.
21:44And if nectar was good enough for the Greek gods, it's good enough for the chasers.
21:49Hello.
21:50Hello.
21:51Who are off to meet head beekeeper, Yanis.
21:54I want you to be careful not to speak loudly, not to make sudden moves.
22:00They don't like it at all.
22:02I will walk very slowly.
22:04Yes.
22:05Very softly.
22:06The boisterous boys at heart, being given a specific instruction, you must slow down, quiet down.
22:12I was a bit anxious about how patient they would be.
22:15Just remember boys, be calm, talk quietly.
22:20I thought I could keep gold for Sheffield United with these guys.
22:23Now's not the time, Mark.
22:29Wow.
22:30Very, very calm.
22:32They're so clever.
22:33Wow.
22:34There they are.
22:35So how many bees on average would be in a hive like this?
22:3940,000.
22:40About 40,000.
22:41I guess.
22:42That's amazing.
22:43So do we know where the queen is here?
22:45It's not easy to find the queen.
22:47First person to find a queen is the winner.
22:49Sean was like a curious kid.
22:51He was finding out all sorts of things, interrogating poor old Yanis.
22:56How are we going to get the bees back into the hive?
22:58The bees can smell the pheromones of the queen.
23:01How long will that normally take?
23:03About 15 minutes, 20 minutes.
23:05The lawyer in me is going to ask questions.
23:07I want to learn.
23:08That's how you learn.
23:09You never stop asking.
23:10You never stop inquiring.
23:11And never stop giving the bees a headache.
23:13But looks like they've been saved across examination from Mark.
23:16Are you all right, Mark?
23:17I just needed a bit of shade.
23:19OK, thank you.
23:20The temperature today is considerably hotter than it was.
23:25There isn't a breath of wind.
23:27It's a good activity to do, but...
23:31Oh, wow.
23:32That's amazing.
23:33Oh, that's good.
23:34That's good.
23:35I know how Winnie the Pooh feels now.
23:37Yes.
23:38He loves honey.
23:39I'm a big fan of honey, but I've never had it draped from...
23:42a honeycomb.
23:43It's incredible.
23:44I don't think these two are natural beekeepers.
23:47I think they're a bit loud, but maybe I'll take it up.
23:50Was I loud?
23:51Yes.
23:52You've got a very resonant voice, Sean.
23:54OK.
23:55Yes.
23:56Thank you so much.
23:57No, I don't know about a beekeeper.
23:58I don't think that's something which I would do, personally,
24:00because I don't simply have the time.
24:02Well, Jenny, thank you for that.
24:03It's really good...
24:04You know, it's pushing the comfort zone of holiday a bit,
24:06but I really wanted to come out into nature, into the countryside.
24:11You know, I'm a city girl.
24:12I don't think I'll ever be out in the countryside forever,
24:14but there's something really soothing to me mentally.
24:18Because we've got really busy brains.
24:20We've got a very busy life.
24:22And the pace of life out in nature is so different.
24:27I always thought Jenny was a sort of bit of a ladette.
24:30You know, loved a good time, loved the cocktail,
24:32but a wonderful side for her to actually reveal about herself.
24:36I'm glad we did it, but I think the next activity
24:40is even more of a challenge.
24:42Am I starting to regret choosing it?
24:44A little bit.
24:45Boo!
24:46Fancy jetting off to roads like our great escapers?
24:51Well, courtesy of Jet 2 Holidays,
24:53we're giving you the chance to win a seven-night holiday for free.

25:35The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
25:41Market stalls are cannonballs.
25:44The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
25:58In her quest to be crowned the Greatest Escaper,
26:00Jenny the Vixen Ryan is pinning her hopes of victory
26:03on a mystery activity deep in the heart of rural roads.
26:08I'm guessing by the shadow we're heading to Slade and South East.
26:12Then I'm going to, of course, get my phone out and see what the comfort says.
26:15Hey, no cheating.
26:17Mark isn't far off, as 20 miles due south into the back of beyond,
26:21they've arrived.
26:23Somewhere.
26:26Jenny, we're in the middle of nowhere.
26:28I am no worse than wiser. Are you, Mark?
26:31Not a clue.
26:33We're on a farm.
26:35We worked that one out.
26:37Which makes some lovely produce.
26:40OK, we sort of worked that out. Now, is it cheese?
26:43There may be cheese involved.
26:45We're going to cook some traditional Greek meze.
26:48I think we can do this.
26:49I think you're going to surprise yourself with your cooking skills.
26:52OK.
26:53And if not, we can get a kebab on the way home.
26:56That's the beauty of food.
27:02Well, I'm not normally cook...
27:04I'm not really adventurous when it comes to food.
27:07Yes, yes.
27:08Jenny's brought them to this rural kitchen farmstead to cook their own dinner.
27:11Oh, thank you.
27:12This is going to be a dinner after.
27:15Under the watchful eye of local chef Michael.
27:18We're going to make the famous dolmades, which is a stuffed wine leaf.
27:21Stuffed wine leaf, yeah.
27:22Which you're going to be rolling from scratch.
27:24OK.
27:25I always wanted to do that.
27:26It's kind of exciting.
27:27We are a big food-loving family, but my mum is like the chef of the family.
27:31She's always been adventurous and she's always kept her horizons really broad
27:36and I've picked up that love of food.
27:39So, wherever I am, I do like to try what the locals would eat.
27:42Do you cook at home?
27:43I really do like to cook.
27:45I mean, my partner Tom is much more of a cook than me,
27:47so it's rare that I get a chance.
27:49I don't cook.
27:50Not at all?
27:51No.
27:52No.
27:53I'm a reheat and ready meal man.
27:55Oh, my goodness.
27:57I definitely eat for effect.
27:58I don't cook for pleasure.
28:01I am a terrible cook.
28:03I've virtually stopped cooking now.
28:05I like my food pretty plain.
28:07OK.
28:09Unfortunately for Mark, plain is off the menu today.
28:12Instead, it's time for him to face the Dolmades challenge.
28:16Wrapping up a pork, rice and herb mix in a vine leaf.
28:19Best roller wins.
28:23Ooh.
28:24That's OK.
28:25Not bad for my first attempt.
28:26Well, if I have to be honest, we've got a winner.
28:29Oh, of course.
28:31But you all get there.
28:32Yeah, we all get there.
28:33We all get there.
28:34It's not a competition.
28:35It's not a competition.
28:36We all get there.
28:37Says the most competitive man on the planet.
28:40He's just got an instinct for it.
28:41Boo.
28:42Another perfect one.
28:45Sean.
28:46Star pupil.
28:48We're all star pupil.
28:49And he won the quiz last night.
28:50He's made out he was rubbish, but he was brilliant.
28:53Good skills.
28:54It was a very action-packed day yesterday.
28:56And in contrast, the day's been about taking a step back, taking everything down a gear,
29:01being mindful.
29:02You're being rather zen, aren't you?
29:04Yeah.
29:05I like to stay very calm on set.
29:08So I have my chamomile tea and I don't take any phone calls just before a show.
29:14I like to have that relaxation and get into the zone.
29:18Well, what I do before every show, I always do my exercises in the room.
29:21Because I like to get myself really worked up, psyched up.
29:24But that's your way of getting into the right mindset.
29:27You're very aware of, you know, how your mind works best.
29:31Whereas I get the heavy metal out and absolutely I'm banging with the time I get out on set.
29:37Again, that's how you work.
29:39We do have different ways of gearing up to record episodes of The Chase.
29:43Those to hype themselves up with heavy metal music and exercises.
29:47Yeah, I'm glad we don't have to share, because that sounds like a nightmare to me.
29:51But now is the time to share as Grub's Up.
29:55Oh, yes.
29:57Oh, wow, fantastic.
29:59That is magnificent.
30:00Thank you very much.
30:02I cannot wait to try this.
30:05It looks so delicious.
30:07Would you like to try the dolmades?
30:08I think I definitely would.
30:10Go for it.
30:11This is fantastic.
30:13Am I going to be going home and knocking up Greek cuisine?
30:15No, but next time I go to a Greek restaurant, I'm like, yeah, I'll have the dolmades, please.
30:19My relationship with food has always been, you know, homemade can be the best stuff.
30:24My mum was a single mum for the first ten years of my life and we didn't always have a huge amount of money, but we never went hungry and always had something delicious.
30:32I'm so proud of her for being a battler and being a fighter and creating a really good life for me and getting me off to the best start possible.
30:42Well, I could say the same thing for my mum.
30:45Although my mum and dad divorced, I wanted to give my 15th birthday, you know, my mum had to work three jobs, not only as a nurse, but also as a telephonist.
30:52But she kept the family together.
30:54And I think it was a proud moment for them when I qualified as a lawyer.
30:58Your blood is so important to you.
30:59Of course it is.
31:00I mean, I've grown up in the area where my family raised me and I don't think I'd ever leave.
31:05I've not moved out of the area.
31:06I bought a house across the road so I can keep an eye on my mum.
31:09You know, I love her dearly.
31:10I'm really proud of her.
31:11Yamas.
31:12Yamas.
31:13Well done.
31:14I've had a wonderful day.
31:15We're quite mismatched, but to behave like a family and share our stories, it was a really different experience.
31:23It's been a pretty wholesome day.
31:25What I've learnt about Jenny, she's a lot more empathic than I realised originally.
31:31And yes, she's got a different approach to life based on her background.
31:35Anyway, it's my turn tomorrow.
31:36I'm looking forward to it.
31:37It's been a really good day.
31:39Jenny surprised me.
31:40I've always known her as a tough, unrelenting quizzer, but it's surprising to see this warmth
31:44to that hard edge.
31:45Jenny's right to bar, but the best is yet to come.
31:51It's the final day of the competition.
31:53And while Mark and Jenny relax like only chasers can.
31:57Bishop, C3, check and fork.
32:00Aw, my poor horsey.
32:01Your poor horsey.
32:02Lycra lover, Sean, is pumping himself up to host the winning day.
32:06Hold on, Joe, let me just finish it.
32:07Oh, sorry, I caught you in action there.
32:0999,000.
32:11So this is the tenth time I've come to Rhodes.
32:14I love Rhodes.
32:15I think it's a slight secret weapon that I know this place.
32:18So I think that might give me the slight edge.
32:20I love the whole island of Rhodes.
32:22I've been to all aspects of the island, but I've never ever seen Rhodes by sea.
32:26Here in Rhodes, we have lots of different boat strips to offer.
32:28There's lots of places where I can get you a boat that you can actually charter for the day.
32:32You can be Captain Sean for the day.
32:33Cheers, kids. Thank you.
32:34No worries.
32:35We know how insanely competitive he is.
32:38He'll be going all out to win this.
32:40Yeah, I can't see him picking something really selfish and forcing us to do something that we're not necessarily going to completely enjoy.
32:48But at the same time, he never winds down.
32:50I sometimes wonder if he has a grasp of human frailty.
32:53I used to love coming to Faleraki with the sort of music scene and enjoying myself.
32:58And I want him to experience my love of music.
33:01So if you could, arrange a lovely little bar so you can see me on the Wheels of Steel's doing some music.
33:07Wheels of Steel's. Love it.
33:08Get you on the decks.
33:09Yeah.
33:10Perfect.
33:11So, yeah, I know a great place where we can definitely make that happen.
33:13I want to be the best person who puts holiday.
33:15Yeah, we're going to have a great time, but we are here to compete, to be fair.
33:18And to kick off what he thinks will be the winning day, Sean's going all out to butter up his fellow chases.
33:25You guys deserve a lot of luxury.
33:27So, you know what, guess what?
33:28We're going to see the island by sea.
33:31Oh, wonderful.
33:32Lovely sea breeze.
33:33That's great.
33:34But first, let's go and find a vessel.
33:36Okay, great. Let's do it.
33:37Some nice ones here.
33:38Yeah, I'm thinking something with a bar.
33:44You what?
33:45Are you joking? Luxury.
33:46Listen here, we're going to have mutiny on the road to Harbour.
33:49Don't do a Fletcher Christian on me, all right?
33:50I was only teasing.
33:51Okay, let's come on.
33:52Oh.
34:00Voila.
34:01Oh, wow.
34:02All right.
34:03Okay.
34:04Did you borrow this off Brad?
34:05Whether or not it's going to give me the edge in winning the final competition,
34:08we'll have to wait and see.
34:11This is absolutely fantastic.
34:16There's something quite primal about being out on the ocean at the mercy of the elements.
34:24I never went on holidays as a kid.
34:26I didn't even go on the sort of weekly school trips.
34:28No.
34:29You know, because obviously money was too tight to mention so far as our household is concerned.
34:32And the first holiday I ever had was when I was 21 and I went on the Camp America scheme.
34:37Oh, there we go.
34:38Oh, wow.
34:39Yeah, that was really good.
34:40When you go to America for the first time, you feel like you're in a different world.
34:43And I went to New York.
34:44I was just so fascinated and excited to actually be there.
34:47He's not had the most privileged upbringing and yet he's done remarkable things as an adult.
34:53There's something we never really get to talk about is our own family lives and personal lives and stuff.
34:58Do you think you'd be in the market for another lady at some point soon?
35:02Yes, but the drawback of being a single man for so long, you do get a bit selfish.
35:07So, do you like your life structured and ordered? You know what you're doing?
35:10What I do like is the adaptability to basically be a committed one.
35:14So, oh, I want to go and have some food. Look, I'm hungry. Let's go nap.
35:18I know you say you like things regimented and in order, so I'm going to ask you the bold and direct question.
35:24Are you neurodivergent, Mark?
35:25Probably.
35:26What's two of my three biggest skills, really good number skills and memory, which are classic ticks in the spectrum?
35:34And like my own company, again, classic tick.
35:37I suspect I am a bit on the spectrum.
35:39I'm probably too old to do it, but at some point maybe I should get officially checked to see if I'm neurodiver.
35:45I don't even make any practical difference to my life because I'd argue if I got to, well, 60 without needing any help or assistance, I can manage.
35:54He was very frank and candid and open about neurodiversity.
35:57Whether or not he was going to get himself formally tested, not that he needs to, because it's not actually affected his work.
36:02It's not affected his work as a quizzer.
36:04You've spent a lifetime masking the things or normalising them to yourself.
36:08And I think, you know, when you were coming up, there was less talk of neurodivergence.
36:13You just shoot.
36:15That's just Mark?
36:16Yeah.
36:17That's just Mark.
36:18We've chatted about all sorts of things over the week and we're not just one-dimensional chasers.
36:23We've all had our struggles and we've all overcome adversity.
36:30Ten miles down the Aegean coastline, it's time to drop anchor.
36:34You going in?
36:36I'm going in.
36:37You going in, Jen?
36:38I think I might have a splash.
36:39It's so beautiful.
36:40Sean's brought the gang to Anthony Quinn Bay, named after the Hollywood actor who filmed the Oscar-winning film Guns of Navarone here.
36:48A bucket list destination, the cove is a must visit for all swimming lovers.
36:53Well, I'm going to top off my tan, so I'll see you guys later, yeah?
36:55Wait, what?
36:56What?
36:57I don't know.
36:58I think we should dock him a point for not taking part in the pool activities.
37:00For a man who essentially lives in, I think they call it, athlasia wear, Sean's the one who let us down.
37:05I'm just disappointed.
37:06I'm sorry, I'm marking him down a point for not actually doing his own activity of swimming.
37:11That's the spirit, in you get.
37:14Oh, this is lovely.
37:19I know your secret weakness, you don't like the sea, do you?
37:22I do.
37:23One of the reasons I didn't want to go in the water is that I decided to have a little nap in this wonderful, glorious heat.
37:30It's certainly an unusual winning strategy.
37:33As an infamous Englishman once said, this is mutiny, Mr Christian.
37:38I'm the captain.
37:40This is mutiny, Mr Christian.
37:44Don't think we've forgotten about you at home because you could be in with a chance to win a seven-night holiday to Rhodes, courtesy of Jet 2 Holidays.
37:52We're also throwing in £2,500 spending money too.
37:56To enter for free, go to the website before 3pm on Friday.
37:59You must be 18 or over.
38:01Good luck.
38:02The Great Escapers, brought to you by Jet 2 Holidays.
38:18The Chasers are in Rhodes, and today, Sean Wallace is in the spotlight to prove he is the greatest escaper.
38:32To win Jenny and Mark's vote, he's taking them 30 miles south to Lindos, a dazzling whitewashed village steeped in 5,000 years of history.
38:50It's a lovely view though, isn't it?
38:52It certainly is.
38:53Stunning.
38:54When I used to come in the 80s and the 90s, Phalaraki was a party town, but Lindos was a complete contrast.
39:00Nice and tranquil.
39:01I love Lindos.
39:02Acropolis at the top.
39:03Yeah.
39:04Then the village around.
39:05Same time, there's clearly been a Crusader influence with those medieval style walls and turrets.
39:11Now, would you guys fancy going to the top of the Acropolis in this heat?
39:15Let me think about it.
39:17No.
39:18No?
39:19All right then.
39:20That's plan A out the window then.
39:22Lovely.
39:23They planned the building so close together so there's always going to be some shade.
39:26But Sean's not famously a quick thinker for nothing.
39:29We're going to draw lots.
39:31Yep.
39:32Whoever draws the name of the other person it belongs to, you must buy something which you think reflects them and to remember the trip we're on.
39:39Remember Rhodes.
39:40Yeah.
39:41A memento.
39:42A memento.
39:43You offer that, Mark?
39:44Yeah, go on then.
39:45That's the infuse other, mate.
39:46That's the best you're getting in this heat.
39:48Ahhhh.
39:50Ice cream.
39:51Oh.
39:52What's that, Mark?
39:53Is that ice cream?
39:54What's that, Mark?
39:55Drag me away from it, quick.
39:56Come on.
39:57There's no time for ice cream, Mark.
39:59Okay, well, we're going to play a game of secret chases, right?
40:01As Sean's plan B is springing into action.
40:03Right.
40:04You go your way.
40:05I'll go away.
40:06You go that way.
40:07I'm going this way.
40:08Nah.
40:09It might be fridge magnet time.
40:12He's not a bum bag kind of guy.
40:16Nice, but definitely not.
40:18Oh, I like this because we've been to all of these places.
40:22Oven gloves, definitely not.
40:24Apollo?
40:25God of war, not really.
40:26Zeus?
40:27Anyone?
40:28Anyone?
40:29No help.
40:31So, Jenny, I've got your one first.
40:33Oh.
40:34Oh, oh, oh.
40:35Here we go.
40:36Oh, of course.
40:37It's a cat.
40:38Yeah.
40:39I've stroked every cat I've seen.
40:40Yes.
40:41Since we've been here.
40:42I've got a gift for Mark, and this is something you've needed.
40:45Oh, I think I can guess.
40:46In the heat.
40:47Oh, yes.
40:48I definitely needed this.
40:50And look, it's got a beast on it.
40:53Oh, yeah.
40:54An un-eating beast.
40:55There we go.
40:57For Sean, something I think you might like.
41:00I sure will, mate.
41:01It reflects what I think of you.
41:02Uh-oh.
41:04Oh, Mark, that's lovely.
41:06Thank you so much.
41:07Apollo, the god of lights, music.
41:09Yeah.
41:10The Olympic Games, was it?
41:11Yeah.
41:12Oh, thank you very much.
41:13You're our very own Greek god.
41:14Yeah, he is a Greek god.
41:15See you, big man.
41:16Thank you so much.
41:17I really appreciate it.
41:18Aw, thanks, Sean.
41:20It's been a lovely day.
41:21Thank you, Jenny.
41:22Nice to get a bit of shopping in as well.
41:23Yeah, exactly.
41:24I've got one more thing to do, so I'm going to go off and do it now.
41:25OK?
41:26OK, good.
41:27Should we just hang fire?
41:28You hang fire until I send for you, OK?
41:29No problem, thank you.
41:30Take care.
41:31See ya.
41:32How mysterious.
41:33Very mysterious.
41:34Apollo is the god of lights and poetry and music, so...
41:36Oh, it's going to lead on nicely to my final adventure for the guys.
41:41It's certainly going to be an adventure of sorts,
41:43as Mark doesn't realise just how bang on he is about Apollo.
41:48Because as night falls, Sean rises as the god of music.
41:52I love music.
41:54I wouldn't say I'm the best DJ in the world, but, you know, I love my music, especially late 80s soul music.
41:59Even at the ripe old age of 65, I'm still out there with my two left feet boogieing.
42:03So that's going to be quite interesting, you know, doing a little DJ set.
42:06Sean's got this crowd going, but after a long, hot day, Jenny and Mark might be tougher to please.
42:13No way!
42:14O-N-G!
42:15DJ Destroyer in the house!
42:16Let's go!
42:17Yeah!
42:18DJ Destroyer!
42:19We followed the music trail down the street and, surprisingly, we had DJ Destroyer on the wheels of steel.
42:35Surprised to see him there.
42:36Go on, Mark!
42:37In the middle!
42:38Have a dance!
42:39Oh, no, no, no, no, no!
42:40Come on, Mark!
42:41Come on!
42:42I'm trying my best not to get grumpy.
42:44I was terrified it was going to be a big party night.
42:47But any good DJ always has a banger up their sleeve to get the Wallflowers dancing.
42:52Woo!
42:53Here, Dad dancing!
42:56To quote from my son's school, don't say no, have a go.
43:01When the crowd are demanding you dance, you might as well step up.
43:05It was fantastic to see Mark really joining in.
43:16I know he was tired, but his dad dancing will, you know, stand the test of time so far as I'm concerned.
43:21Woo!
43:22Mark!
43:23Mark!
43:24Mark!
43:25Mark!
43:26Lish!
43:27Lish!
43:28Don't stop the music!
43:30Well, I have to say, that was a bit of a surprise.
43:34Not so much Dark Destroyer as Dark Horse.
43:36Yeah.
43:37My goodness!
43:38I go on holiday every Christmas in Jamaica and, you know, Jamaica is a sort of centre of really good reggae music.
43:43Do you think that's a reason for your deep appreciation for music?
43:46It goes all the way back to your family?
43:48My mum and dad came over as second Windmush generation.
43:51Oh, wow.
43:52Travelers in the mid-50s.
43:54They sort of ingrained their love of music and passed it down.
43:57I've always had an appreciation for people like Bob Marley, Dennis Brown.
44:01I've just loved music.
44:03I'll salute you, sir, because considering your parents' generation were brought over to do the not-so-glamorous jobs.
44:10Yeah.
44:11How proud must they be that their son's a top-grade barrister?
44:14You win the vast majority of your cases.
44:16Yeah, I do.
44:17So, salute, sir.
44:19Cheers.
44:20The thing I know about Sean is there's always something else to learn about him.
44:25I didn't know, for example, these are Windruss generation descendant.
44:30And then he'll suddenly come out, I'm a Faleraki wild child. What?
44:33Cheers.
44:34It's been a fantastic for a week, actually.
44:36You know, something which I'm never, ever going to forget.
44:38And I've really, really had a wonderful time.
44:41And so, you know, guess what?
44:43May the best person win.
44:44It's going to be close.
44:45Yeah.
44:46I agree.
44:47The chase is over for Mark, Jenny and Sean.
44:53And now it's time for them to each vote to decide who is the greatest escaper.
44:58It's an incredibly close decision for me.
45:01I think the others have both done marvellously.
45:03So, who knows?
45:04If I'm lucky enough to win, great.
45:06Ultimately, we are here to compete.
45:07And ultimately, there can only be one winner.
45:10This has given us a real, genuine opportunity to find out more about one another.
45:15Exactly.
45:16I've found that really nice to actually get to know Lithuania better than I did before.
45:20We understand each other better, I think.
45:22Yes, I'd agree with that.
45:23All right, guys.
45:24It's decision time.
45:25Oh.
45:26So, your choices?
45:27It was incredibly close for me.
45:29I had to come down to the very smallest decision, which was ending on a song and a dance and a cocktail.
45:37It's my dream day out.
45:40So, my choice of winning day was Sean's day.
45:45Oh, thank you.
45:46Cheers.
45:47Well done.
45:48Mark, what I really liked part of your day was when we was at the stadium, because that's when I got to really know you.
45:54Jenny, the cooking was brilliant.
45:56To do something completely different was not only refreshing for me and new for me, it's something which I might even incorporate in my own trip.
46:03So, my choice has got to go to the wonderful, inimitable Miss Jenny Ryan.
46:09Yay!
46:11So, it's one all.
46:12So, it's one all.
46:13And I've got a deciding vote.
46:14Oh, you hate that power, don't you?
46:15No, he loves that power.
46:17He loves that power.
46:18And neither of you voted for me.
46:21Right.
46:22It's all decisions, decisions, decisions.
46:23So, yesterday, going around Lindos and seeing the Faleraki kid make his return.
46:32Whereas Jenny's was a much more closer to nature, going out to that farm on the hillside, but I could see why it could be so attractive.
46:40So, I'm picking Miss Jenny Ryan.
46:43Yay!
46:44Yay!
46:45I'm astonished to have won.
46:48I know we are competitive by nature as chasers, but we've all got so much out of it.
46:55We're all winners because we've all learned something about each other.
46:58Thank you, thank you.
46:59That's the only deserved winner.
47:00Well done.
47:01It was very close though.
47:03We all wanted to win, but the best person won in the end, so you won't get any complaints from me.
47:08We're a great holiday team.
47:09Who knew?
47:10Yes, it's been great fun.
47:12I think the others have both done marvellously.
47:14What a wonderful escape!
47:15Yay!
47:16But I am mega competitive.
47:18I didn't win this time.
47:19That's it.
47:20I will have vengeance.
