00:00hey guys welcome back to the princess once again this is your host and the
00:05gamer and these will be a little bit of a discussion okay now recently the
00:13suicide squad came out and did really poorly right so I figured that with my
00:20Mortal Kombat video I did a month ago I also do one on the suicide squad as well
00:25since that's in a similar position and how this affects the DCEU moved forward
00:34and because it's a huge thing to actually look at here they give under the reception
00:41to the movie you know the abuse audience scores and then the box office returns
00:47given the situation okay now if you guys aren't aware yet the suicide squad that
00:55came out a while ago and to put it madly it underperformed to put realistically
01:02speaking it was a disaster to be honest although some people I get it was just a
01:09mild inconvenience because of the dual release on HBO Max and the pandemic
01:15Delta variant or whatever and there's a bit of a leeway there for those arguments and
01:19there's also a lot of pushback you can use these arguments and I had to go to
01:24pushback side because for better or worse it failed to even gross back its budget now
01:32guaranteed it's had a pretty ginormous budget
01:36you know 185 million which isn't a typical amount for an arid movie you know usually
01:45arid movies go between 50 to 120 million ish you know so yeah I can understand that
01:55part I don't know the film was just too expensive I definitely agree with because
02:00hey even the first Suicide Squad it costed less than 185 million and that film had reshoot and
02:08edits and all the other stuff spent on it and that was still cheaper than this movie so I will
02:16admit that it was too expensive for its own good the HBO Max thing dual release option did affected
02:24the film's performance it wasn't a major thing as I don't know the trades are making it out to be
02:31implying that you know the film would have done a lot better if it wasn't released on HBO Max
02:36I had been trying to say that it probably would have done somewhat better but not significantly better
02:43to where it would have needed to be to be a success relative to its budget the film HBO Max
02:53and the reason why I said it is because the HBO Max
02:56it's mainly in the US at the moment even though it does have a large subscriber base and it's growing
03:04you know which is a good thing it's mainly like 70-71% in the US as opposed to Disney Plus and the
03:13streaming service which are more available internationally this would have mainly affected
03:18its domestic turnout which was already drastically low but in terms of the global take it would have
03:25probably still been less than 300 million but I think at the most you know no pandemic no dual release
03:36right if you factor in these scenarios that affected the outcome this film would have still had a hard time
03:46catching up to Shazam even you know that film had a similar situation to Jesus but actually it had
03:57very strong reviews it had a sizable opening weekend but it had no leg up at the box office in fact the
04:05film actually performed worse than the none if the movie that had terrible reviews and about the same level
04:15opening weekend I guess you can say like the same markets you know except the none wasn't released in China and yet when you look at the total finish
04:27Shazam grows around the same amount as the none and to print perspective Shazam was also available in China
04:37right just saying it's not a flop by any means but it that wasn't where it needed to be and the same can be said here for the suicide squad film
04:48outside the pandemic it will have had a hard time between that because of several key things that go beyond the release strategy and the current situation
04:59situation right the first being is well this is probably the main thing to look at is the fact that this sequel is not related to the first suicide squad
05:11contrary to what you know the studio was trying to show you and you know the fans were saying about the movie coming onto the release
05:21right you know the film oh it's a sequel it's a spiritual success or whatever but truly it is nothing like that like they try to mark it as its own movie
05:33right like it's a reboot in a sense like if you remember watching transformers up until the third one they had like the same cast generally speaking and by the time we got to the fourth one they sort of switched up the main cast a little bit you know for that
05:49you know for the human characters and by then you know people were saying oh it's like a soft reboot not a full reboot because a lot of the same characters uh with Pat shows back up in the movie
06:03here in suicide squad um like Harley Quinn um Rick Flagg Amanda Walker you know like those usual suspects shows up but the other main ones like say
06:17Diablo and Deadshot those guys they are not here and then there's a fact that the film
06:27it tries to do the same thing as the first movie right you know the whole take the bad guys are trying to save the world now
06:35but in this situation it's probably done much better because you know it's R-rated that means
06:41it's a step up in the sense that it has more flow to it right there's a lot more leeway for the characters
06:49and their personalities and riding you know to experiment and such and it turns out to be a better
06:55experience overall from that but i'll touch on the first point is that this is not
07:03what you know continues for the first suicide squad movie and because of that you already lost the
07:09major audience that you were um looking forward you know all the people that turned out to watch the
07:15first suicide squad turned out to watch the first suicide squad because that was the first suicide squad
07:22it had a great marketing campaign very trendy had a lot of appeal with you know the characters and the
07:31team and how they were presented all of that is gone all right you don't have any of that here you have
07:39a different setting different team a whole different outlook some of the characters we turn but a lot of
07:46different characters you know not that's a bad thing just that it's a whole new experience and it's
07:55nothing like the first movie even though it tries to come up as a continuation of the first movie
08:02it also tries to act as a standalone film as well right so that was the biggest downfall to say by far
08:11for this movie because the audience that showed up for the first one looking at this it just
08:20lacked the urgency as a result of not not being associated with the first one i think that's
08:28the best way to put it right you know because when it comes to making a sequel
08:35one thing you have to understand is sequels tend to be bigger and better or something like that you know
08:41that's the usual things to just go for make it bigger make it more appealing to the audience
08:45all right so when you make a sequel that's a standalone that's away from this film
08:53it's pretty much asking for a drop-off in the audience and if you don't believe me take a look
08:59at any other big franchise that has came out that has made spin-offs okay you know spin-off that are in
09:06the same universe as the other movies but they you can argue they are sequels in a sense but they are mainly
09:14a standalone films with their own settings like for example hubs and short that can be added as a
09:22sequel to the fast seven fast eight films but it's a standalone because it's stories disconnected from
09:31those films right it's its own thing and you see the film didn't perform anywhere close to fast eight
09:41fast seven that's the point i'm making here and it's clearly evident that that's what happened here
09:49and i find really funny how wb didn't even think about that going forward this movie like just because
09:56you got james gunn from you know marvel who had that controversy a while back and he said to have him do the
10:05next suicide squad and let him do his own thing run free rampant and everything and everything but never
10:13thought of the the potential repercussions from basically thrown away everything from the previous
10:20movie and you know just starting up with his own thing like it just doesn't work and it goes to show
10:28you that when it came to the suicide squad harley quinn this she was never a main draw when it comes to
10:37the audience i mean sure she's a very popular character and her popularity has increased over the years
10:45but her appeal wasn't from her character itself you know like i would say batman's a character that can
10:52stand out by himself or superman or wonder woman essence harley quinn doesn't like that she's mainly
10:58like a ying and a yang you know like the joker right she needs the joker to like show her story that's
11:10why you saw when birds of prey came out it did nowhere close to the damn suicide squad and that's why you
11:17seen this suicide squad come out being a standalone the harley quinn doesn't carry the movies because
11:24she's not that type of character right she's just not there yet and mind you the birth of prey was more
11:32physical to the suicide squad than this suicide squad movie right and you see how that movie performed even
11:38with very good review scores and even good audience scores all right so it goes to show that when you do this
11:47whole stuff and you try to let course correct you have to understand the big implication is that
11:55you're not only getting rid of the baggage but you're also getting rid of the the people that came along
12:02with it and yet they end up coming and doing this with this musical this movie and normally the only
12:11me previously i would have probably blamed this on the director and whatnot but to be honest and i'm
12:18really going to do that here because as much as i dislike james gunn if we're being honest here he did
12:26exactly what you expected of him when it came to this film right like when you look at james gunn's work
12:33this suicide squad movie is exactly what you would expect from a director like him who is you know let loose
12:40with big budget doing what he does and he's seen it in the response from the the critics in the audience
12:48right so i can't really blame him because he did a good job he made a good movie it's just the problem
12:54here lies within wp and how they have been handling the dc moving forward post batman vs superman you know
13:03this whole course correction direction they've been taken and get rid of all of this stuff from the past
13:14you know it it goes to show that it's too late to to actually do that at this point you know to
13:23basically raise the past because now look you have this future that people are unsure of they have
13:30lots of doubts about and it's not really consistent you know you have to like basically play um roll the
13:39dice and hope you land snake eyes just to actually get a hit that's basically what they're doing here and
13:47you know it worked you know you got a joker so i guess you can say it worked like that for them and
13:53the aquaman movie but then you also end up with stuff like this and the one domain before and then
14:02there's a play you know where it's a lot of stinkers a lot of misses right and the reason for that is
14:10because of the lack of consistency right when you throw out the plans from the start and then you try the
14:17course correct moving forward that early on like what you've seen post bbs that this is the outcome
14:25you're gonna get you know where you can have a good film from the director you know who does exactly
14:32what he intended to do and the audience and critics likes it even more than the previous film but it
14:41still fails because the the appeal isn't there anymore you know the urgency isn't there anymore
14:49you know the connection that you built up from the start isn't there with that being said moving forward
14:56the future of the dce i would say i don't think there's any possible future with this franchise
15:05i mean even though they are making movies like crazy still you know still have the the batman with matt
15:11reese and the flash along with black adam and the aquaman sequel most of those probably aren't even
15:21connected to dce at this point they're just going to be standalone films with the film making and the
15:26actor doing their own things and with that it is going to have to focus more on building up the
15:34individual movies by themselves building up their law you know and hoping that to stay on that path
15:43for each of these characters stories okay commit to it but the plan isn't working and you scrap it
15:50completely and start over and if you start over don't expect the same level you know of interest when
16:00you start over that's the the main takeaway here from this right lower your expect and try to focus and
16:10on the main key things consistency and staying on the path that you're going with your characters and they
16:19do that first and then you probably have a much better outlook for dc moving forward if they can do that
16:29then there's basically no hope for the bce or whatever it's called at this point all right guys so
16:36that's just pretty much my whole um take on the dce and you know the suicide squad why it failed
16:45regardless of the whole situation you know what to make of the dce moving forward um there's a lot more
16:51i can say about this but i don't really want to make this into an hour long video discussing this because
16:57then that would be like forever two men do an edit you know so yeah um as well let's make this quick
17:03points and such right so anyways um let me know what you think in the comment section down below
17:10when it comes to the dc when it comes to this suicide squad movie also what are your thoughts on it
17:18you know if you like it if you hate it what why you think it failed when it came to the box office
17:25performance and what do you think about the dcu moving forward you know in retrospect to its past
17:33films and what you're seeing now let me know in the comment section down below and be sure to look at
17:38my other videos i guess i'll see you guys later
