"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" (but don't say it a third time) returns an iconic cast of characters to the big screen with exciting new additions, including Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci. CinemaBlend's Mike Reyes joins them to ask all our burning questions, including on-set bonding, lip-syncing, working with Tim Burton, and the other classic projects they'd like to revisit.

00:00It's called acting, right?
00:03Oh, f**k.
00:04I was like, oh, yeah, but he's like, oh, I was so, so moved.
00:07Get out of here.
00:08Yeah.
00:09No, I mean, get out of here.
00:10I can't believe I'm doing this.
00:12Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
00:20It's showtime.
00:21I had to say it because I am so excited for you to be back in Beetlejuice.
00:25Thanks, me too.
00:25And I was very curious, what liner moment truly made you feel like you were back?
00:31Because Tim was saying like you were possessed on set.
00:34People keep asking me this, and I'll remember like later today, but there were so many fun moments.
00:40Just, you know, I also don't want to give too much away because people go, see it.
00:44But the scene where we're in the room with all the shrunken head guys, and Tim had this idea.
00:54It just made me laugh.
00:55I think I, I think I lip sync twice in the movie, don't I?
00:59Yes.
00:59Yeah.
01:00Yeah.
01:00So the first time is really fun.
01:02Yeah.
01:03I love that scene.
01:04Me too.
01:04Because just out of nowhere, it's like the mic and then the different audio, and it's like, oh, I see where we're going with this.
01:09Okay.
01:10The juice is loose.
01:11When you did the first one, they sort of had like that chant on set where it's like, juice.
01:15Yeah.
01:15Juice.
01:15Did they do it again for Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice?
01:17No.
01:17No, I don't even know what spurred the first one because I hadn't done anything yet.
01:22What the f***?
01:24It was wild.
01:25I still don't understand how that happened.
01:27That was wild.
01:28Probably the costume.
01:29Just like, that does everything.
01:31Maybe.
01:31Like when you're in the full, Justin was talking about how when he first saw you in makeup and costume, he's like, oh my God, I'm here.
01:36I had been looking for him on set and kind of going like, I should probably meet Michael, you know, like at some point.
01:42And we were just missing each other during like hair and makeup tests and stuff like that.
01:46And then I came into, they were like, oh, he just went to his trailer.
01:49So I was like, okay, knock, knock, knock.
01:51Open the door.
01:51He's in full Beetlejuice.
01:53We have full makeup.
01:54And he's like, hey, man.
01:55But he wasn't, not in the voice, obviously.
01:57And it was like the perfect way to just immediately slip right in because there he was like, you know, standing above me, you know, in his trailer.
02:06And I thought, oh my God, this is like, you know.
02:09And then there were multiple pinch me moments throughout the whole process.
02:13Oh, yeah.
02:13Because like once you break the ice with that, it's just, it's icing for the rest of it.
02:17And then just walking on the sets, you're just like, are you kidding me?
02:20It's incredible.
02:21Yeah.
02:21I think it's a lot of the sets for the first time for me personally.
02:24Like I've never seen a set like the afterlife before.
02:27I think I just walked by it and then I just got, I went in there when you guys were shooting somewhere else and just took it all in.
02:33It's insane.
02:34The floor is uneven and there's texture on all the walls and every poster has some sort of inside joke or saying.
02:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:41It's just so detailed and so incredible.
02:43So good.
02:43It killed it.
02:44I'm just thinking of Tim's look in his eyes, talking about what he wanted to do.
02:49And I'll say, what ideas do you have?
02:50And what do you want to do?
02:51And just that.
02:52Oh, I'm so happy to be here.
02:54So energetic.
02:55Yeah, everything you expect from Tim Burton.
02:56Yeah.
02:57I'm happy for him.
02:58I was really, really moved.
03:01I remember after we did the first one, I read an interview with Tim where he said that he identified so much with Lydia.
03:11And I didn't know that when up on the first one.
03:14And I was, I just remember being like, oh, I was so, so moved.
03:18And yeah, because in all of his movies, he is one of, you know, he is Edward Scissorhands.
03:25He is kind of Lydia-esque, you know, but also emotionally.
03:30Like, I feel like he's so uncompromising and he's so singular, but he is also very sincere.
03:40It's not like just all aesthetic, you know.
03:43Like, he really cares.
03:45And when, you know, I was, when this finally happened, because we'd been talking about it for years and years, and I kept getting my hopes up.
03:58And, you know, and I, but everyone knew it, like, had to be perfect and no compromising.
04:04And it was a very emotional experience, being on that set, seeing everyone for the first time.
04:10And it was emotional for Tim as well.
04:12Oh, yeah.
04:13I thought I heard stories about you both, like, walking around the reconstructed set.
04:16Yeah.
04:16And it's like, oh, I remember that.
04:18Oh, you remember that.
04:19Oh, my God.
04:20But, but also, I think just in terms of how he, his direction, the first stuff we shot, I was trying, like,
04:32I was really nervous about it.
04:34And I remember the, you know, that first day and trying it a few different ways and trying to find it.
04:40And then Tim just said, like, let's try one where just, you're really sincere, like, you know.
04:46And, and then we did that and it, it worked.
04:50And that was sort of the way I applied that to the whole journey.
04:54And, and, and if you think about Lydia in the first one, and she is, she seems cynical and dramatic and all these things,
05:04but she actually is a very sensitive person.
05:07And there is something very pure about her and, and her heart and, and her connection to these ghosts.
05:16And I, you know, I just, I really liked that we sort of captured that.
05:23I felt a little tingle.
05:24Winona was so sweet and easy.
05:26They're both so easy.
05:26Like, so welcoming, so kind.
05:29So, they really took the pressure off of, you know, joining something like this.
05:34It's hard not to care for Winona and what, and what her character, what Lydia was going through.
05:38So I think we really connected on that.
05:40Whether we say it out loud or not, it just, you instantly feel it.
05:43You know, when you care about the characters, you don't, that's all you need.
05:47That's, she gave us what we needed to feel about her.
05:51Yeah.
05:51And almost every scene we do, I feel like there's always at least one.
05:54Look at each other.
05:55Eye contact.
05:56Yeah.
05:56I don't know if it's a movie I'm worried about.
05:57You're not getting married.
05:58And I turn around to you like.
06:01I was already very excited when Tim told me there is a key role in this film for which I thought about you.
06:10So I was very happy to accept it and to play it.
06:13And then he showed me what he wanted to do with the dancing scene.
06:19And when I saw that, I said, oh my God, there is this horror dancing scene that I felt like a mime.
06:28I felt like a broken doll, but it was so much fun.
06:32And I have to say that I was really helped because I had three hours of makeup every day.
06:38And also to get in these amazing sets, to wear those beautiful costumes of Colleen Atwood.
06:46And also Tim loves to draw.
06:49So there are always drawings of characters and situations.
06:54And also he likes practical effects instead of CGI.
06:59So you have real monsters to react to instead of a green screen.
07:05So you can go farther with your fantasy and your imagination.
07:09And when I saw the movie, I was so surprised, even though I knew everything.
07:14But I had such a pleasure to play Dolores.
07:19It was one of those scripts that you get and you think, God, I hope this is good.
07:23You know, because I talked to Tim.
07:24He's like, I'm going to send you the script.
07:25And I said, great.
07:27And then you, not that I ever doubted Tim, but I thought like, oh, I hope that this is good.
07:33And then page after page, I was like, this is so good.
07:35This is so good.
07:37And then the part, I think, you know, my part, Rory, was like a little, it was sort of like,
07:42we wanted to just layer it and make it as funny as it possibly could be.
07:47So we just had, me and Tim had multiple conversations about what could just make him funny.
07:52And we found that like, you know, making him like overly emotional could be funny.
07:56You know, that he was now starting to sort of dress like Lydia could be really funny, you know.
08:01And there were just all these things.
08:02So we sort of started developing it and there was a bunch of stuff that we sort of improv,
08:07you know, that was just, made him so stupid that made us laugh.
08:11And it was so great because it's like, you think back to the original and it's like,
08:14it is just a grab bag of characters.
08:15And like, Rory's kind of like a new Otho, so to speak, where it's like the really wild one
08:20on the spectrum versus like Astrid being the most serious.
08:23Totally, yeah.
08:24Well, it's one of those things that together, everybody sort of makes sense.
08:28But if you took any of these characters and put them in their own movie,
08:31none of them would make any sense.
08:33So it's like a really weird, you know, phenomenon.
08:36Rory would be on HDTV like doing Haunted Homes.
08:38Yeah, I don't know what he would be doing.
08:40Oh God, he's poor Rory.
08:42Oh dear.
08:44I'm good.
08:45So obviously Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is coming back,
08:48about coming back to this world, back to these characters and introducing new ones as well.
08:52But from your past careers, what role are you like most eager to go back to now that you've done this?
08:58Oh, jeez.
08:59Oh, no, I'm drawing a blank.
09:02Yeah, you are going to do it on Wednesday?
09:03Well, yeah, I'm in the middle of Wednesday right now.
09:06Oh, yeah.
09:06It's with black hair and things.
09:07That's always exciting.
09:09Oh, good answer.
09:10Yes.
09:11Very adroit pivot.
09:12Yes, Wednesday is good.
09:13Wednesday is good.
09:14She's very cool.
09:15So it's nice to kind of slip right back into that physicality again.
09:20That's great.
09:22Forget your child again?
09:23Morgan Fairchild from SCTV.
09:26What are you smiling at?
09:30You're not taking me seriously, are you?
09:32No, I don't know.
09:33I'm trying to think of somebody I played years ago.
09:37I want to revisit all of your characters personally.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Look, I would just gladly take that SCTV documentary from Netflix.
09:44I would gladly take that coming out.
09:46One day it will.
09:46Yeah.
09:47It will.
09:47You might want to try to do another version of, because I liked it so much, Multiplicity.
09:56Yeah, Multiplicity was fun.
09:57Hard, but fun.
09:58I love that movie.
09:59Yeah, me too.
10:00Oh, my God.
10:01There's so many of them that I want to go back to.
10:04As an actor, you know, it's hard to say because you can never visualize the thing unless, you
10:09know, for example, I don't think there should be a Mulholland Drive 2 or something like that.
10:13I don't know.
10:15I mean, I still find, like, as a writer, you know, things that are in the vein of Tropic
10:19Thunder are really funny that I'd like to sort of, I wouldn't want to revisit that movie
10:25or make a sequel of it, but there's versions of it that I think could exist elsewhere that
10:29I think would be very funny.
10:30It's that working with Mercury.
10:32It's high science, man.
10:33It's art form.
10:34Yeah.
10:34You an artist.
10:35Mm.
10:36It's what we do, right?
10:37Yeah.
10:37There's been that Les Grossman spinoff that people have talked about for forever.
10:41Yeah.
10:41Like, do you think we should still get that or do you think, like, the rules are off the
10:45road?
10:45I would love to do it.
10:46You know, I mean, Tom's the busiest man in Hollywood, obviously, in show business.
10:51But, yeah, if you ever called me, I would absolutely be like, let's go.
10:55Look, I'm incredibly busy, so why don't you get the hell out of here before I snap your
10:59off and jam it into your ass?
11:01No, not you, Helen.
11:02I don't know, because I would have, I for years was trying to get everybody to get on
11:10board with it for Heathers, but I think, you know, that ship has sailed.
11:19That was another that I thought could be a fun, like, return.
11:23But I, hey, this is an absolute first for me to revisit something.
11:30It's, and now I know, like, it's like you're spoiled.
11:33Like, you don't ever want to do this unless it's absolutely perfect.
11:37Yeah, like, that's the key.
11:38Like, the sincerity is there.
11:39The heart is there.
11:40Yes.
11:40That's why it took so long.
11:41Yeah, and we were also needed Jenna to be born and grow up, because she is, like, such
11:47a great, she's, like, the missing puzzle piece, you know?
11:52Like, I mean, she's so brilliant.
11:54She's so, so brilliant.
11:56And as is Monica and Willem and Justin.
11:59I mean, it was sort of dream, dream cast.
12:03You both get to be family with Winona Ryder in this film, and I wanted to know, was there
12:08any sort of, like, bonding exercises, like, something that you all sort of shared that
12:12was, like, linked you together?
12:14Yeah, I know, it's very new age of me.
12:16It's like, how did you all, how did you all sync up together with your performances?
12:19I want to quote answers.
12:19Who's in, uh, it's called acting.
12:23Laurence Olivier.
12:24What's it?
12:24Yeah, Laurence Olivier.
12:25It doesn't happen, right?
12:26Yeah.
12:27Try acting, my dear boy.
12:30So, but no, not to be rude, but that's it.
12:33Our dance sessions were pretty intense.
12:35And I was kind of late in the game.
12:36We finally got it together, yeah.
12:37We finally connected.
12:38Yeah, all throughout the shoot, we were, like, and then we started dancing together.
12:41Why is she here?
12:42I kept asking.
12:43Yeah, we developed a respect for each other through dance.
12:45Yeah.
12:46Definitely.
12:47Spill your guts.
12:49Who wants to go first?
12:50All right, I will.
12:53See, I'm willing to do the work.
12:56Obviously, with a movie like this, secrecy is key.
12:58And it was funny, because when I was doing the prep, a reel came up of you on Letterman accidentally
13:03spoiling Batman.
13:04Oh, really?
13:05Back in the day.
13:05Oh, jeez.
13:06So, I was curious, how did that experience?
13:07That's totally like me.
13:08That's so stupid.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Yeah.
13:10God.
13:11What did I say?
13:12I witnessed Batman, Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents when he's a kid.
13:17And the Joker had done that?
13:18Yeah, but he doesn't know it till later.
13:19I see.
13:19I'm kind of blowing the plot.
13:21Yeah, like, nobody's going to go see it now.
13:23Oh, jeez.
13:24I was like, oh, yeah, but he learns that later.
13:25But didn't everybody know that?
13:30No.
13:30Really?
13:31Because it was like Joe Chill was the guy that did it in comic canon.
13:34Get out of here.
13:35Yeah.
13:36No, I mean, get out of here.
13:37No, get out of here.
13:37Okay, fine.
13:38Cinema blends out.
13:40Really?
13:40See, I'm a dunce.
13:41All right, anyway.
13:42Well, what...
13:43Well, I'm not going to blow this, because the ending's unbelievable.
13:45It's good.
13:46I'm not going to say anything.
13:47They got to get...
13:48Fuck, fuck, fuck.
13:48I want some of that long green.
13:50This guy is such...
13:51Lay down your long green at the box office, then we'll talk.
13:54Go see it in Dolby.
13:54We saw it in Dolby for the press screen.
13:56Where do you see the IMAX?
13:57Oh, that's next.
13:59Yeah.
13:59Do you know if they're doing 40X?
14:01I have no idea.
14:02I want 40X, because that's like a theme park.
14:04Hey, who doesn't want 40X?
14:08I'm going to make you so happy.
14:18Nice socks.
14:19Yeah, thank you.
14:20Solid.
14:21Out of all places, Dollar Tree.
14:23Really?
14:24Yeah, just like...
14:25I love Dollarama, actually.
14:26Yes.
14:27Fair enough.
14:28Yeah, because I saw the John Oliver thing on Dollar Tree.
14:30Oh.
14:31It would make you not want to shop there.
14:32Oh, no.
14:33What about the 99 cents worth?
14:34Same.
14:35No, it was Family Dollar that was the problem.
14:36Which one?
14:37Family Dollar, I think.
14:38Really?
14:38Worse?
14:39Yeah.
14:39Around the same level.
14:40I think your Dollar Store's confused.
14:41No, Dollarama's good.
14:42Dollarama's pure.
14:44Cinema blends.
14:45Heverspeed.
14:46Like a coffee.
14:47You know what?
14:48I keep telling them we should do one, and it should be cinnamon,
14:50because I sometimes trip over the name, and it sounds like cinnamon blend.
14:54Right.
14:55And, like, cinema.
14:56It has to be cinematic.
14:57Cinemates.
14:58You know, like, the foam latte of, like, camera.
15:01Oh, you could, like, the art.
15:03Yes.
15:03The latte art.
15:04Latte art.
15:06Cinema blends.
15:07You could, like,ă,
15:08Most of them are amazing.
15:14Yeah.
15:14Deuximate.
15:16Me.
15:16I.
15:17I.
15:18The acne of of the islet'!
15:20We.
15:21Of the.
15:21We can.
15:22We.
15:23It but we can.
15:25We.
15:26We.
