00:00Hello there. Welcome to paradise. I don't think we could begin Getaway's Holidays in the Sun special in a more magnificent location.
00:15And over the next hour, we are going to take you from one sunny, lovely location to the next.
00:21From the crystal clear waters of Bora Bora...
00:24It's here! It's here!
00:26This one looks nice, eh?
00:28To Australia's own Green Island.
00:32Out of the 300 sand caves in the Great Barrier Reef, this is the only one with a rainforest.
00:39Mexico's famous Cabo San Lucas to the more secluded Goron Island in the Philippines.
00:46You can see right to the bottom. It's just amazing.
00:49As well as beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and Thailand.
00:54So grab your sun cream, pop on a hat, sit back and relax.
00:58And enjoy Getaway's Holidays in the Sun.
01:01I'm pretty sure if Heaven was a place on Earth, it would look like Bora Bora.
01:14Even the locals call it the Pearl of the Pacific.
01:18Now this Lagoon Cruise is a return getaway trip for me. It involves sharks and stingrays swimming with them.
01:25I was a little overwhelmed the first time around. So I'm hoping, second time, I'm a little more chill.
01:29Wish me luck.
01:30The tiny island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia is actually considered to be one of the most beautiful holiday spots in the world.
01:36What do you think makes Bora Bora Bora stand out? Why is it different here?
01:46The difference here? Is it just the colours? Is it incredible? Yes.
02:07The two colours, wide colours, don't we see the water here almost like one, two metres. Why come to my office?
02:19I like your office. Can I stay? Why not?
02:23First order of business, a meeting with the locals.
02:27Now we see the race already there.
02:33It's okay, it's okay, just stay relaxed.
02:36Okay, just stay relaxed.
02:37Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
02:42Relax.
02:43Hold me through it, hold me through it.
02:46Hold me through it, hold me through it.
02:47Hold me through it, hold me through it.
02:48Here, see?
02:49Very, very soft.
02:51So, we've just met.
02:56This is an instant friendship.
02:59Okay, I've got a shark, I've got a stick right here.
03:02Oh, you see the sharks?
03:03I'm cool.
03:04Yeah, all right.
03:06Nico assures me that the black tip reef sharks and the stingrays are not dangerous at all.
03:13Once I calmed down, I kind of loved it.
03:16Well, you have to admit this was a completely amazing experience.
03:38It definitely should earn a place on your bucket list.
03:43So, the full day tour also visits the top snorkeling spots in the lagoon,
03:53which is protected by a surrounding barrier reef,
03:56which, of course, makes it super calm and super easy to get to.
04:01Now we are at the coral garden place here.
04:03It's like four, five, six metres deep water, shallow water and clear water.
04:08Coral garden, what do you see exactly?
04:10We saw a lot of fish.
04:12I'm not sure about this page.
04:13Oh, why?
04:14Are we going to see more sharks?
04:17I don't think so.
04:18Good, okay.
04:19I'm all right with that.
04:20Here we don't see sharks.
04:21The coral gardens here are just kind of like cities beneath the surface, full of fish and coral, all playing their little part in the reef's ecosystem.
04:42Honestly, a day on the water in Bora Bora is an embarrassment of riches.
04:49They have it all.
04:51It's not enough that you get to swim with the stingrays and sharks.
04:57But then you go on to these coral gardens and they are loaded, loaded with fish.
05:02It is such a compliment.
05:04It must be said to how they care for their waters.
05:08I am that impressed.
05:10And if that's not enough, the tour ends with a final surprise.
05:15Now let me show you your local place.
05:17Love it.
05:18Sounds good.
05:19Croissant crew.
05:20Croissant crew is a fish.
05:21This is a yellow tuna.
05:23Okay.
05:24Sea cucumber, lime, coconut milk.
05:27A traditional lunch served on a private island.
05:46And while this ends our lagoon tour, no, the day is not over yet.
05:51I mentioned that this place is called the Pearl of the Pacific.
05:54So, how about we visit a pearl farm?
05:57Turn it off!
06:00This has got to be one of the best experiences in all of Bora Bora.
06:05Diving for your very own Tahitian black pearl.
06:11Cultured in the black-lipped oyster, the pearl grows layer by layer over the years.
06:19Excellent!
06:20You got it.
06:22Excellent!
06:23It's back to the shore to see what treasures are hiding inside.
06:28There you go.
06:29Got the baby.
06:30Got the baby.
06:31Got the baby.
06:32Tahitian is bigger, better.
06:34Is it more expensive?
06:36Yes.
06:37The size matters.
06:39Can you see already if there's one in there?
06:42Can you tell me?
06:43Can I see one on the edge?
06:48I think I see one, eh?
06:50Okay, let's have a look inside.
06:53If I push this, Nameli, you sit.
06:56I was looking in the totally wrong spot.
06:58Totally wrong side.
06:59It's huge!
07:00It's huge!
07:01Yeah, this one looks nice, eh?
07:02It's huge!
07:03It's huge!
07:04Yeah, this one looks nice, eh?
07:05It's huge!
07:06It's huge!
07:07All right?
07:08This is where nature and tradition work hand in hand to produce one of French Polynesia's
07:14most prized positions.
07:16And there you go.
07:17All right.
07:18And there's your pearl, eh?
07:20A little piece of the Pacific that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
07:26It's the only jewel that we produce here in French Polynesia and I'm very proud that
07:31it's part of my culture, eh?
07:32That's why I'm very happy to share it with you today.
07:35Have a very nice one as well.
07:37I got lucky in Bora Bora.
07:38In Bora Bora.
07:39The pearl of the Pacific.
07:41There's your pearl.
07:42This is just the lagoon that keeps on giving.
07:56Air Tahiti Nui is the flagship carrier of the islands of Tahiti and flies several times
08:03a week to Papeete via Auckland.
08:06For prices and for more info, just visit airtahitinui.com.
08:14Coming up next, holidays in the Australian sun.
08:18Leave your worries on the mainland.
08:20The Great Barrier Reef certainly lives up to its name.
08:25Some places are beautiful above the surface, while other places are stunning below.
08:45Well, this island has the best of both worlds.
08:49You've got one of the seven natural wonders of the world right under your feet.
08:54And out of the 300 sand caves in the Great Barrier Reef, this is the only one with a rainforest.
09:01Welcome to Green Island.
09:04Just 45 minutes by boat from Cairns, Green Island is one of the easiest day trips to the Great Barrier Reef.
09:13With great adventures, running ferry transfers and tours.
09:17Or you can check into the family-friendly Green Island Resort, which offers plenty of experiences that dive a little deeper into this unique ecosystem.
09:30We'll explore the rainforest soon, but first, it's time to get wet.
09:36The water looks beautiful.
09:37I'm excited.
09:38Are you ready?
09:39I'm totally ready.
09:40You ready?
09:41Yes, let's do it.
09:42Let's go.
09:43Go and see you.
09:45Feel it.
09:46If you can go, feel it.
10:03You're ready.
10:04Guided snorkeling tours explore the magnificent coral gardens that surround the island.
10:09island. And with marine biologists like Phil leading the way, you get a greater appreciation
10:16of this underwater world. Phil, that was so amazing. I'm a little speechless right now.
10:27Are you still in awe from what we just saw after all these years of coming here? After
10:3040 years of me coming out here, I still love it every time, just like we just saw then.
10:34That's magic. This is one of 2,800 different individual reefs that make up the Great Barrier
10:40Reef. We've got hundreds of different species of fish and coral right off the beach here off
10:45the island. So that's why we think this is one of the more special places. For families
10:51and first timers, this is one of the gentlest ways to meet the Great Barrier Reef. Mother
11:02nature's work continues above the water. Step ashore and you'll discover why Green Island
11:10is one of the rarest places on earth. So many things make it one of the most unique
11:16sand caves on the Great Barrier Reef, if not the world. But of course, the very obvious
11:20fact that we have rainforest that is dense as it is on a sand cave built on top of a reef.
11:27I think that is astonishing. It is. How did that happen? That's a really good question.
11:32I mean, we know how the sand cave was built. It was built by the accumulation of sand and
11:36coral grit, things over time building up on the top of the reef, creating an island. For
11:41rainforest to grow, you need accessibility to a rainforest to begin with. So we have Cape Tribulation.
11:46We've got that World Heritage Listed location not too far away. Yes. So we have a source.
11:52Ah. It's the birds. Ah. So the birds created the rainforest. So the birds basically have been
11:57transferring rainforest seeds across from the mainland to this island for thousands of years.
12:05And then you get this wonderful habitat which is grown on top of a sand cave which has been built
12:10on a reef thanks to the fish. And I think that's the most fascinating, having a connection of two World
12:16Heritage Listed environments in one place. And they co-exist beautifully.
12:36Green Island Eco Resort embraces the unique environment. Nestled among the rainforest,
12:42it offers affordable family accommodation for a laid-back island holiday.
12:56Resort guests enjoy a range of free activities, tours and daily sunset drinks.
13:02By this time, the day visitors have left and you've got the island almost to yourself.
13:17Leave your worries on the mainland, toes in the sand, coral reef as your backdrop. The Great Barrier Reef
13:24certainly lives up to its name.
13:33I wonder if we'll all remember what it feels like
13:41Just one more conversation with the starlight
13:47Welcome to the real-life postcard that is Bunker Bay. This place is up there with some of the most
13:52incredible stretches of coastline in all of WA. And in a state that is world famous for its beautiful beaches,
13:59that is really saying something.
14:05Bunker Bay is in the spectacular southwest corner of Western Australia, around a three-hour drive from Perth.
14:11Bunker Bay is the only resort in the area, and it's a pretty flash one at that.
14:30As you'd expect from a pulmonary resort, you've got all the five-star luxuries and facilities,
14:34but here you're also completely immersed in nature. Not a bad place to recharge the batteries.
14:41Well, it took some time to get it right
14:47To recognise the infinity in the sky
14:53With around 150 modern villas, some with lake views and others with direct beach access,
14:59Pullman Bunker Bay does a good job of making sure this pristine beach doesn't entirely steal the show.
15:05It feels alive
15:10Away from the beach, it's just a 10-minute drive to one of the region's best breweries.
15:18Eagle Bay Brewing Co. is a family-owned and run restaurant and microbrewery, located on a working farm.
15:24So, Kegs, this is the inner sanctum. This is where the magic happens.
15:28Absolutely.
15:29What's the process to create the beer?
15:32It will start with me on the computer, the boring-looking part where I do all the maths to make sure all the science works.
15:38Um, and then behind me here's the brew house, so we'll have brew day or work production.
15:43Um, and so we'll brew through here, which will take us a couple of hours.
15:46Um, and then we'll transfer into tank, where we'll pitch east and ferment.
15:49Um, and then we'll add any hops if it's a particularly hoppy beer.
15:52Um, we'll filter it, we'll send it up top, and then we'll carbonate it and package it all Kegg.
15:57But, of course, the best part of any brewing process is the tasting.
16:01We'll work our way through the core range, um, starting off with Kolsch, our flagship beer,
16:06certainly our biggest seller.
16:08You gonna have one with me, champion?
16:09Absolutely.
16:10Aw, cheers.
16:10Cheers, mate.
16:17Oh, that is nice.
16:18Not bad.
16:19That is beautiful.
16:21I love that.
16:22That's a real summer drink.
16:23Yeah.
16:26As well as making a top drop, the brewery has become known for its epic location.
16:33The south-west in particular, it's such a beautiful region, and any chance you get to be in nature,
16:38you're absolutely sure.
16:39Absolutely.
16:39I want you to stay.
16:42Back at Bunker Bay, and while the Pullman has a superb restaurant on site,
16:47just a short walk away is another delicious option.
16:53Ilma Beach House is an elevated dining experience tucked away behind the dunes.
16:58Go on, go on, do it.
17:01Ilma, by meaning, is Maltese for the word water, and that represents our family heritage,
17:07and the restaurant is inspired by what we have here on our doorstep,
17:12but also the fact that it's aligned with the Mediterranean way of life.
17:19And as you'd expect, the pristine waters around here are loaded with fresh seafood,
17:24which forms the basis of Ilma's menu.
17:27Our chef has a wonderful relationship with local fishermen who will share with him daily their
17:32current catches and give him the option of what fish will be serving that week in the restaurant.
17:37I don't know what I'm crying.
17:40Fresh seafood, views like this in Bunker Bay.
17:46I think I've found paradise.
17:47Cheers.
17:57Coming up next, holidays in the Mexican sun.
18:00Water's like a bath.
18:02I love it.
18:07Mexico is a holiday maker's mecca.
18:13There's vibrant cities, ruins for those after a bit of history, and of course,
18:18there's beaches for the drop and flop.
18:21But which one to choose?
18:22This is Medano Beach at sunny Cabo San Lucas Bay, Mexico.
18:31Just a quick 30-minute dash from the international airport, and the ideal drop and flop.
18:36Here, where the Mexican desert meets the sea, the beach buzzers with tourists soaking up 40-degree
18:45sunshine in bath-warm, crystal-clear waters, while resorts line endless stretches of postcard-perfect coastline.
18:54With so many options begging for your attention, picking the perfect Cabo resort is like ordering tacos on an empty stomach.
19:03It's just overwhelming.
19:05So where do you start?
19:06Well, I got you covered.
19:10Smack dab in the heart of all the action is the Corazon Resort and Spa.
19:15Fresh from a cool $100 million makeover, this place is hands down my pick for your epic stay in Cabo.
19:22The name Corazon means heart, and so it's because of our prime location on the main beach, and it's because also of our team.
19:31We've got people that have worked here since the beginning 30 years ago, and the familia Corazon is what drives this place,
19:38and it's the hospitality and the open-heartedness that our people have that I think sets us apart from everything else in Cabo.
19:45All right, let's take a cheeky peek inside the hotel's glam new tower and find out why everyone's losing their maracas over these rooms.
19:57You've got floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, decor packed with playful Mexican vibes, and jaw-dropping views of Land's End,
20:07better known as El Arco, one of Cabo's most Insta-worthy landmarks.
20:11I mean, come on, that view looks like a painting.
20:15Go big or go home, right? Welcome to the Corazon Suite. Full kitchen, two-bed, three-bath, and your own private terrace with a hot tub, and look at these views.
20:31The pool, the oceans, the cliffs. I mean, you feel like the king of the world up here.
20:39Ready to eat, sip, and lounge like royalty without ever reaching for your wallet?
20:47Corazon Carbo's all-inclusive package is a great way to manage your holiday budget.
20:52It's not only the hamburger and the B&T and the club sandwich. We have it all, also in all-inclusive, but things are more nicer.
21:04There are products from Baca, California, like the octopus, tacos, the cabrilla fish is from here, the aguacate is from here.
21:13The produce are really fresh, and we put it in the all-inclusive menu.
21:19So why not go ahead, try every dish on the menu, and live your best Mexican holiday life?
21:26What brings you to Cabo?
21:27Yeah, we're here on a mate's birthday. We're all from Australia, and it's our first time in Mexico, and we wanted to find a place in Cabo that was, like, super central, you know, on the beach.
21:37Are you hitting it hard?
21:38Oh, dude, I'm fully, fully wet, you know, drinks, food.
21:43This hotel steals the spotlight right on the bay, with plush sunbeds and food and drinks just a wave away.
21:50You've got all the classics, jet skis, snorkelling, even schmoozing on a multi-million dollar yacht.
21:56And when you need a break, wander the sand for local goodies and tasty beach snacks, before grabbing aboard and paddling off into the crystal clear blue.
22:06Here we go.
22:08Out here on the paddleboard, we've got a party going on on the beach here.
22:15It's just the best way to soak in the Baja coastline.
22:19How good is this?
22:21The coast is cruising along.
22:23The water is like a bar.
22:25Oh, I love it.
22:27If you're more of a why-leave-the-hotel kind of traveller, you're in luck.
22:37This place has two slick pools, complete with swim-up bars, for all-day sipping.
22:43And up top, you'll find a local legend Baja Brewing, pouring over 10 custom craft brews on tap.
22:50Head all the way to the tippy-top, and you'll hit rooftop 360.
22:57Yep, you guessed it, 360-degree views.
23:02Gracias.
23:02Ah, and don't forget, the all-inclusive pass.
23:08Another margarita is just a liftaway, and the perfect way to end an epic day here in Kapa.
23:13Still to come, more of Getaway's Holidays in the Sun, including Hanging Ten in Hikadua.
23:26The coastline is amazing.
23:28The beaches are epic.
23:30So I knew we had to do a story along here.
23:33Cruising around Corrin Island.
23:35I honestly, I lack the words to say how clear this water is.
23:39All I'm going to say is I'm getting back in there.
23:41But next, relaxing like royalty in Thailand.
23:45This is where the Thais themselves holiday, and have been the summer residence for the royal family since the 1920s.
23:52Before we welcome Hoda Al-Zubaydi to the getaway family.
23:57From beautiful brunch spots to hideaway accommodation, it's a place you can visit and just exhale.
24:11Welcome to Kwa Hinh, a quaint seaside town with all the charm and character Thailand is known for, minus the crowds of tourists.
24:26This is where the Thais themselves holiday, and has been the summer residence for the royal family since the 1920s.
24:32So, if it's good enough for the royals, I figure it's worth a look around.
24:37Kwa Hinh lies just three hours south of the Thai capital of Bangkok.
24:41Its proximity to the city makes it a popular choice for locals, as well as tourists keen to escape the crowds.
24:47Yeah, I guess that's why Thai people love Kwa Hinh, rather than any other beaches nearby Bangkok, because kids can enjoy it.
24:58You see, they can run around safely, the wave is not that high, and nice breeze coming through.
25:04Why are there so many horses on this beach?
25:12Oh, they're here since the royal family bring in a horse cart a long time ago, and ever since, they're always here, and it's become a symbol of Kwa Hinh Beach now.
25:21And you're from bustling Bangkok, so do you like to get away down here?
25:25Oh, I love it. I love to be here. Whenever I'm here, I can just sit back and relax.
25:30One of its most iconic attractions is the local train station, originally built in the 1920s to serve the royal family.
25:44It's one of Thailand's prettiest railway stations, with a unique blend of Victorian and Thai architecture.
25:50Is this a common look all around Thailand, or is this a special one in particular?
25:54No, this is a special one, the only one in the country.
25:57So did the royal family use this train line?
25:59Yeah, they do.
26:01And do they still use it?
26:02They still use it, yeah, come to town. We still have a pavilion for the royal family then.
26:13Another must-see attraction in Hua Hin is the Cicada Market, a night market with a magical backdrop
26:19that originally started as a hub for the local creative community.
26:23This is how the market gets started off. We have a local artist gathered together, and they want a place to perform their products, you know.
26:36And then it expanded from here, so it started with the artists showcasing their works.
26:40That's right. And now it's food and craft and a lot of other things.
26:43That's it.
26:45It's definitely the place to stock up on souvenirs and indulge in local flavours.
26:51But it's not usual Thai shopping experience.
26:54It's unlike any other Thai market I've seen before.
26:58I'm used to, you know, quite tight spaces and noisy and lots of things going on, but this is such a different feel.
27:05I guess this market really reflects the city as a whole, mimics that very relaxed vibe.
27:18There's so much pineapple. I see pineapple jam, dried pineapple, pineapple cake.
27:25Yeah, and this one cracker.
27:27Why so much pineapple?
27:29Because this area is well known for pineapple, but I would say the weather has actually played a big role for it.
27:34It needs heat.
27:36That's why it will bring out all the sweet flavour.
27:40It's not too sweet. It's just nice.
27:49Very refreshing on a hot night like this.
27:53I see these at all the markets, and to be honest, I haven't got the husband, the present yet.
27:59So what more could he want than a picture of me for the office?
28:04Are you finished?
28:11Oh, I'm nervous.
28:15Oh my gosh, he's going to love it.
28:19This market, like the rest of the town, has the kind of easy, relaxed vibe that forces you into holiday mode.
28:26I think the royals were onto something.
28:28Stretching out along its very own peninsula, it's stunning Palm Beach.
28:45From beautiful brunch spots to hideaway accommodation, it's a place you can visit and just exhale.
28:55Palm Beach, or Palmy as the locals call it, is a one-hour drive from the Sydney CBD.
29:04At Sydney's northernmost seaside point, it's known for its surf beach, glamorous homes, outdoor lifestyle and coastal culture.
29:12Brunch is considered a main meal here, and for that, it's hard to go past local icon, Baron Joey House.
29:27Sitting opposite Palm Beach Wharf, this historic venue has coastal charm in spades.
29:34Baron Joey House has been here since 1923, so over 100 years old now.
29:38This heritage-listed restaurant is a hot destination for locals and day-trippers exploring the area.
29:48So, we're pretty versatile.
29:49They can come in for a snack and a beer, or they can come in for a dinner as well.
29:54Now, the food looks sensational.
29:56Yeah, we've got a lot of classic dishes with a modern twist.
29:59So, prawn cocktail, we have crab toast, which goes down very nicely with a beer or a glass of wine.
30:05Or a cocktail.
30:06Or a cocktail, mezcal, or a mojito, definitely.
30:10We've got Sydney rock oysters as well.
30:12I don't know where to begin.
30:13Should I start with a con cocktail?
30:14What do you say?
30:15You can't go wrong wherever you start, to be honest.
30:17No better place to start than some oysters.
30:24That's so fresh.
30:25If you want to burn off brunch, you can tackle the hike up to the lighthouse, or hit the beach to surf some waves.
30:34But if relaxation is more your vibe, why not dive straight into your accommodation?
30:41If you're looking to stay somewhere a little bespoke and a little remote, then look no further than the lily pad, your very own floating oasis.
30:50This floating apartment is made for Instagram.
30:56It boasts five-star luxury interiors and it's 100% off-grid.
31:03Upstairs features a king-size bed with premium linens.
31:08Downstairs, you have a full-size kitchen with a beautiful designer lounge and a smart TV.
31:14But my personal favourite, it's this beautiful view that you get from every single angle.
31:20There's no need to swim to board this vessel.
31:26A host and private tender transfer you out and get you settled.
31:31The fridge is stocked and a cheese board at the ready.
31:36The initial reaction is, wow, it's a lot bigger than it looks in social media.
31:42And also just how secluded it is, how quiet it is.
31:46You're actually living on the water.
31:49And people think it'd probably be a lot more rough.
31:52It's quite stable, even though we're a floating vessel.
31:55Now there's more to what meets the eye.
31:58Tell me, what else can you do here?
31:59So there's lots of things that you can actually relax and take it easy.
32:03It's Netflix and you can take it as easy as you want.
32:06But if you want more, there's stand-up paddleboard.
32:09We also have a little boat that comes with the lily pad.
32:12And there's lots of beaches that you can explore.
32:15Swim, sauna, hot tub.
32:17I hear there's a bit of massage here.
32:19And massages as well, if you'd like to add a massage on.
32:25It sleeps too, but you can have up to 24 people.
32:29So we've had weddings, we've had birthday celebrations, engagements.
32:36Well, I think we need to cheers to one of the most spectacular views in Sydney.
32:42Cheers.
32:43If the water is a little bit cool like it is today, the hot tub is your friend.
32:47What a way to end the day.
32:50In the water, on the water, with one of the most spectacular views of pit water.
32:56Palm Beach, you've really won me over.
33:05Coming up next, holidays in the Sri Lankan sun.
33:09My ideal seaside holiday is where I can wake up and walk straight out onto the beach.
33:17When I told people that I was coming to Sri Lanka for the first time,
33:29almost everyone who had been here before said to me,
33:33the coastline is amazing.
33:36The beaches are epic.
33:37So I knew we had to do a story along here,
33:40but I didn't really know what to expect.
33:42Surfing is a thing to do here.
33:43I am terrible, but I'm willing to give it a go.
33:47Let's get in there.
33:50The low-key coastal town of Hikaduwa
33:53is around two hours' drive south of the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.
33:58Hikaduwa is considered one of the original surf destinations in the country,
34:03and it is still the number one pastime.
34:06If I look for you, would you avoid me, or would you look for me?
34:11Welcome to Hikaduwa Beach.
34:12I'm Sopun.
34:14Yeah.
34:14The conditions are pretty good today.
34:17You know, nice and glassy, small waves, perfect condition to learn to surf.
34:22How come the surf here is so good?
34:24Well, maybe it's our location.
34:26You know, Hikaduwa is one of the most consistent surf break in Sri Lanka,
34:30and ideal for, like, beginners, intermediate, advanced surfers,
34:33you know, or, like, longboarders, or, like, you know, twin-fin, or you name it, you know?
34:36Yeah.
34:37I just want to warn you.
34:38Yeah.
34:39I have tried surfing a couple of times.
34:41I'm not very good.
34:42No worries.
34:43All the pro surfers have gone through that, you know,
34:45so we learn from the cold.
34:46Like, you do your best and believe in yourself,
34:49what you think, what you get.
34:50Let's do this, right?
34:51Okay?
34:51Supon is a born and bred Hikaduwa local
34:57and will help you brave the waves,
35:00whatever your level or lack thereof, in my case.
35:07You're not going to believe it,
35:09but mere minutes in the water,
35:11and Supon has made me one very happy surf chick.
35:18As well as running surf lessons,
35:20Supon, with his gorgeous Aussie expat wife, Mel,
35:25own the resort that opens straight out onto the surf break.
35:30How did you know which spot along this gorgeous beach to buy?
35:35Well, Supon and I, on our sunset walks before kids,
35:39used to always walk past this spot,
35:41and we thought if we could ever buy a place on the beach one day,
35:44this would be the one.
35:45And it so happened that it came up for sale,
35:47and, yeah, the rest is history.
35:54Amaru is just gorgeous.
35:56It's a casual beachside abode with eight rooms.
36:00It's simple style and small size.
36:03Give it a completely chill-out, low-key holiday vibe.
36:07My ideal seaside holiday is where I can wake up
36:13and walk straight out onto the beach.
36:15Yeah.
36:15And that's what you've got here, isn't it?
36:16You can definitely do that here, yeah.
36:18So I think it's about 20 metres to the shore, so, yeah.
36:22Straight out.
36:23Straight out.
36:24Right in.
36:24The water is beautiful.
36:26Yeah, Indian Ocean is so warm.
36:28You don't need a wetsuit, and you can swim.
36:30If you don't surf, you can just jump in the sea.
36:38Hikaduwa, or Hikar to the locals,
36:41has been known over the years as a sleepy little surf town.
36:44But not anymore.
36:46It is waking up with slick cafes with great coffee,
36:50like the salty Schwams, owned by two Sri Lankan brothers.
36:54Yeah, I guess you could say a lot of our knowledge
36:57when it comes to the hospitality industry
36:59is from our time spent in Melbourne.
37:01We both studied there after high school.
37:04We came back on holiday,
37:05and we saw that there was a scope
37:07for this kind of, like, Melbourne-style hospitality.
37:11So there was no coffee machine,
37:12there was no-one doing juices or smoothies,
37:14no-one doing eggs for breakfast.
37:16Yannick and Yevon split their time between surf seasons.
37:20We've got Aragam Bay on the East Coast
37:23from May until October,
37:26and here in Hikar,
37:27on the South West Coast, for the remainder.
37:30Well, we knew we wanted to come to Hikaduwa
37:33because there's a lot of history here
37:34when it comes to surf culture,
37:36and Salty Swamis is a lot about
37:38the celebration of the surf culture here
37:40through art and through music.
37:44You know, no matter which side of the coast you are on,
37:47Sri Lanka is famous for its magical sunsets.
37:53It's one's favourite time of the day is sunset.
37:55He never misses one.
37:56You know, it's incredible.
37:58This is where you get to live and work and be in love.
38:01Yeah, I thought, like, you know,
38:01there's a big opportunity with tourism in Sri Lanka.
38:05You know, we have a great location
38:06and you get a lot of tourists travelling here,
38:09and then why not start your own things, right?
38:11I just cannot believe how well our day has finished up.
38:16Thank you for all of this.
38:17It is just incredible.
38:18So many people told me about the beaches in Sri Lanka,
38:21the coastline of Sri Lanka.
38:24I understand what they're talking about now.
38:26Incredible.
38:27Coming up next, holidays in the Filipino sun.
38:36Honestly, the water is so clear,
38:39it's like swimming in nature's pool.
38:49Welcome to paradise.
38:50This is the Philippines.
38:54Now, if you've already been to the usual destinations,
38:56Bali, Fiji, Thailand,
38:58then maybe this is the next island frontier for you to try.
39:06The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands.
39:11For natural beauty, crystal-clear lakes
39:13and world-class underwater life,
39:16I can highly recommend Koron Island,
39:19southwest of the capital, Manila.
39:21Day-tripping by boat from the town of the same name
39:27will give you a taste of the very best of it.
39:32Just the look of these islands
39:34has such an unusual structure about it.
39:36Yes, sir.
39:37Actually, it looks like a sleeping lion.
39:40I can see that now.
39:41It looks like the head right there.
39:42Look it up.
39:43You can see the nose, the mouth.
39:44So is this the body here going down to the legs?
39:46Yes.
39:47Okay.
39:48I see it now.
39:49I see it.
39:57Just 20 minutes by boat
39:59and we arrive at Kayangan Lake,
40:01an absolutely breathtaking spot.
40:05This is amazing.
40:07It is.
40:07Look how clear this is.
40:08Actually, this is known as
40:09the clearest and cleanest inland bodies of water lake
40:12in the Philippines.
40:13In the Philippines?
40:13Yes.
40:14You can see.
40:15You can see right to the bottom.
40:16It's just amazing.
40:18Crystal clear water.
40:19I feel like I want to dive in right now.
40:21It's only, like, not about for the view.
40:24So you have to try the water also.
40:26This is good.
40:31And I can confirm swimming in here
40:33feels every bit as good as it looks.
40:36I honestly, I lack the words to say
40:43how clear this water is.
40:44All I'm going to say
40:45is I'm getting back in there.
40:51Korong Island is also known for its wreck dives
40:54with an entire Japanese supply fleet
40:56sunk here by US planes in World War II.
41:01Skeleton wreck is one of its most popular
41:03and despite its name,
41:04there were no casualties from its demise.
41:08See, I was worried they called it skeleton wreck
41:10because there might have been skeletons in there,
41:11but it's not that at all.
41:12No.
41:12That's because the long time
41:14it was on the bottom of the sea,
41:16so it's metal.
41:18It gets rusted.
41:19Right.
41:20And then the only parts remains
41:22are the skeletal.
41:23Right.
41:23So that's why they called it skeleton wreck.
41:27Accessible from shore
41:28and with a depth at one end
41:29of just five metres,
41:30skeleton wreck is one of the few sites
41:33that are easily explored
41:34with just a snorkel and a mask.
41:48That is some of the best snorkelling
41:50I have had anywhere.
41:52It's like you don't even want to get out of the water.
41:53But the best part is
41:54if you want to go find a new site,
41:56just a quick five, ten minute boat right away.
41:58Where are we going next, guys?
41:59We've barely had time to get dry
42:06before we jump back in at Coral Garden,
42:09a sanctuary for marine life
42:11and beautiful corals.
42:13It's hard to pick what's more spectacular,
42:15the scenery below the surface or above.
42:18So whereabouts are we right now?
42:21Exactly, we're here at Twin Lagoon.
42:23Twin Lagoon.
42:24Yes.
42:25This water is so incredibly blue and clear.
42:27The one who makes the water so clear,
42:31so that's because we have the good weather also.
42:33And then we don't have rain.
42:36That's why it doesn't look murky.
42:38No, it's so...
42:39I can see all the way to the bottom.
42:41How deep are we paddling in right about now?
42:43So around three to four metres.
42:47Twin Lagoon gets its name
42:48from its side-by-side pair of lagoons
42:50divided by sheer limestone walls.
42:54This is so cool.
42:55Like, we're just going past
42:56all these beautiful limestone cliffs.
42:58Let's go into this little cove here.
43:00I'm feeling adventurous.
43:00Yeah, we have a lot of small cove
43:05like this in this island.
43:06Wow!
43:06In just one day trip,
43:14you can see so many of Karan's highlights,
43:17from snorkelling a shipwreck
43:18to swimming in the clearest waters of the country
43:20to kayaking along these ancient limestone cliffs.
43:24This is the Philippines I've seen only in photos
43:26and online,
43:27and it really does live up to the hype.
43:29Thank you so much
43:36for taking your holidays with Getaway.
43:39Next week, we are jumping on board
43:40two of the world's greatest ocean yachts
43:43as we cruise from Greenland...
43:46And if, like me, you've never been here,
43:48you're really in for a big treat.
43:50...through the Merden Caribbean...
43:52This is the holiday that dreams are made of.
43:55...and down to the Southern Ocean.
43:59We cannot wait to travel with you then.
44:02See you later.
44:02...
44:02...
