Negotiations on consolidating the US-backed truce in the war in Gaza are at a "critical moment,” said Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani at the Doha Forum on Saturday (Dec 6).
Leaders from Turkiye and Egypt also said a lot needed to be ironed out to move forward the peace plan forward into the next phase.
Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt and the United States signed the pact in October, backed by many more nations to ensure peace in Gaza and the Middle East.
00:00...that just came up. Basically a line said that Washington's...
00:05...we have soldiers in Slovakia, in Romania...
00:08...we are just resolving what happened in Gaza.
00:12We are at a critical moment, it's not yet there, so what we have just done is a pause.
00:40We cannot consider it yet a ceasefire. A ceasefire cannot be completed unless there is a full withdrawal of the Israeli forces...
00:48...there is stability back in Gaza, people can go in and out, which is not the case today.
00:55Right now, us as Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, together with the United States, we are getting together in order to force the way forward for the next phase.
01:09And this next phase is just also temporary from our perspective, because at the end of the day, if we are looking at...
01:16...if we are just resolving what happened in Gaza, the catastrophe that happened in the last two years, it's not enough.
01:24It's not enough, because there is a root for this conflict, and this conflict is not only about Gaza, it's about Gaza, it's about the West Bank, it's about the rights of the Palestinians for their state.
01:34Turkey is ready and willing to do whatever it takes for us to contribute to the ongoing peace efforts that everybody is collectively contributing.
01:45And in terms of ISF, you know, still there is a big discussion taking place, how to form and what are the specific mission statements and what will be the rules of engagement.
02:00I think when we define the mission of ISF, we should be realistic and nuanced in expecting certain things from ISF, because there are realities in the field.
02:14And I think our first objective in deploying ISF should be, is to separate Palestinians from the Israelis on borderline. This should be our main objective.
02:26Then we can address the other remaining issues.
02:29There is a big challenge for ISF either, because the formation of the ISF, which countries will be contributing, this is a big question now, and what will be the command structure, what will be the logistics.
02:41Thousands of detailed questions are in place, but this is up to our military commanders.
02:47Dr. Comfort Arrow, CEO and President of the International Crisis Group.
02:51We need international forces to be deployed alongside the yellow line in order to verify and to monitor the upholding of the ceasefire.
03:06The mandate should be from our point of view of peacekeeping rather than peace enforcing, you know, and this is very, very important issue.
