02:39Two weeks in, Jared's expanded operation is splashing wood on both fronts.
02:50So far, the Forever Claim crew has harvested about 2,000 tons of big timber,
02:58putting them just on pace to deliver his first royalty.
03:02But the lease on the float cam claim ends in just three weeks' time,
03:06so the crew needs to log every last bit of big timber
03:09to stand a chance of meeting his $2 million goal by winter.

03:25there's one more machine to haul up the mountain.
03:28Super Snorkel, it's a machine that casts down,
03:32grabs logs, and pulls them up to the road.
03:34It uses gravity to its advantage and its long boom

03:39So it's almost like fishing for logs.
03:41They're very, very productive,
03:43but they are a very big pain in the ass to move.
03:47The tow job will be a nine-mile trek uphill
03:50over some of the roughest road known to logging.
03:54And with the heavy load,
03:55they'll need to maintain momentum the whole way.
03:58It's going to be a pins and needles day.

04:03and it sticks up 135 feet in the air.

08:48To avoid the rock bluff, Jim will aim the tree straight down the hill.
08:59But a fall that far could risk damaging it too.
09:05As a precaution, he'll also make adjustments to his face cut.
09:09I'm going to open up my undercut a bit more so that the tree's going to commit.
09:17It's going to be more 45 and committed to falling by the time it closes and disconnects from that stump.
09:23So it's going to be ultra committed to where it's going to land.
09:26On top of that, I'm just going to shave the little chin off of the front of the undercut
09:30so that this tree is going to hit the ground, the butt of it, before the top of it,
09:35which will minimize the impact to the ground and to the tree.

09:41We get this big tree down with this little saw.
09:51If it goes too far up the hill, it's going to be breaking and devalued
09:55and half the tree's going to be lost and we can't recover it in the first place.

13:31These fat trucks have an extremely robust braking system that needs water.
13:37We have to really make sure that we keep our brakes cool, or you will find yourself up creek without a paddle.

16:03Back at the float camp claim, former hook tender turned woods foreman Brand Laviolette,
16:08along with yarder operator Dave Cox, mop up fallen timber to prepare it for hauling.
16:17Because we had so much rain, the soil itself isn't as strong as it should be.
16:21There's not a whole lot to work with here, but we'll turn this shit into sugar.
16:25We've been logging for 21, 22 years.
16:31I'm a fifth generation logger on the west coast.
16:34I grew up in a logging camp town, so it was an easy transition for me.
16:39And now I'm living the dream.

16:44A hook tender is defined as the man in charge of a grappler to your side.
16:49You're the hill boss, you're the guy orchestrating all the moving parts,
16:52you're running a chess game over here.
16:55We're going to go to a stump that's going to be strong enough, really stable stump.
17:07It's got a lot of wood in front of it.
17:08I think this is going to be the guy.
17:09To do its job, a grapple yarder must be anchored to multiple points so it can pick up logs and pull them down to the roadside.
17:19But when a yarder has gathered everything in its reach, it's on Brad to rig the new anchor points,
17:25also known as tail holds, that keep the team harvesting across the hillside.

18:50A gun barrel happens when a log juts into the direct path of the yarder's pulling cable.
18:57If the two collide, it could send the log straight down at the grapple yarder.
19:04My quick fix for that is to take my saw, buck it off,
19:09and that piece will just get out of her way.

20:53At the forever claim, Jared and the super snorkel hall hit the trickiest stretch yet,
21:04under fire from heavy branches that could topple the snorkel or destroy the push truck.

24:47This tree looks like it's got everything we need for value, size, scale.
24:55But it's definitely got a good lean.
24:57And that undercut has to be perfect.
25:00Because if I throw it too far this way, it's going to freaking go right into these nice cedars over here and smash it out of them.
25:08So I've got to get it right in between these cedars.
25:11I'll have to watch out with that cedar eater here.
25:14If it doesn't go with the cedar, it could fall over up there.

25:22Once I get my undercut out, I think I can cut up both sides and tee it up and leave a strap.
25:29That's why I'm going to cut the sides up first and leave my trigger right in there.
25:34To keep this tree from smashing, Rob will have to shoot a tight gap between two nearby cedars
25:45and hope the hemlock growing off the back doesn't break loose and crush him.
25:49To better his odds, he'll make his usual face cut, then trim away at the tree's sides,
25:56leaving just enough holding wood for a fast final cut.

30:57When we packaged him up, we flew him out in a helicopter.

31:02So I think he has a lot of fear of the tracks acting up again.

32:21Having finally hit their stride, Brad and Dave must now reach the rest of the timber,
32:28which means re-anchoring the yarder's pulling cable further across the hill
32:32and setting it up to withstand more than 90,000 pounds of force.
32:37Right now I've identified the next tail hold to be used,
32:40so I'm going to tie that stump back to one of these green, healthy trees in lead
32:45to make sure that that stump is not going to pull during the yarding process.
32:49But in a region that receives more than 10 feet of precipitation per year,
33:10loose soil is always a concern.

33:16That should hold her back.
33:22Because we had so much rain, still kind of worried about the soil saturation
33:25and loss of integrity of the root systems here,
33:29so we're just going to have to be real delicate.
33:31If all things go according to plan, we're really going to pick up some speed here,

33:35We're just going to produce like bastards and hopefully make the boss a good dollar here.
33:39But it's all going to depend on this stump and if we can make her stay in the ground.

34:47I have this old Tupperware here I stole from my mom years ago.
34:51And it's just full of all kinds of spare parts.

34:57Just small essentials that if I were to break down while I'm up there cutting trees down,
35:01I can repair my saw without wasting too much time.
35:05That's pretty well what I carry in my pack.
35:09It varies from guy to guy, but that seems to work for me.

35:28In the hills above the float camp claim, Brad's mission to bring logs down to the roadside
35:33is falling apart.
35:34So, obviously, we just had a major blow to production here.
35:38This stump, it's pulled, so we're going to have to regroup, reset, come up with a new plan.
35:44As I look around, there's an option we have right here, real close.
35:47I could actually climb this tree and put some blocks and straps as high as necessary to get the lines and the grapple picked up off the forest floor.
35:55The bigger the spread you can get between your guyline and your top choker makes that tree that much more strong.
36:02So, my plan is climb up probably 40, 50 feet, maybe just below the canopy.
36:07And that's where I'll put my guyline out.
36:14And I love how this gear hasn't changed in 100 years.
36:16This is the same stuff my granddad was using, doing the same thing.

36:27You know, as a kid growing up in a logging camp, it was just a form of fun.
36:31And then when I became a logger, it was just part of the job detail.
36:35I've been doing it for over 20 years now, so it's second nature.
36:39But a lot of it is just knowing your gear, trusting your gear, inspecting it.
36:44You know, knowing your limit and logging within it.
36:51Look at that.
36:53It ain't pretty, but it's effective.
