00:00From the Pat and Teller Theater at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, here's our host, Brooke
00:24Welcome to Us Fool, where worlds from around the magician will go forth and back against the cheese and mac of magic, the lightning and thunder of our show, Teller and Penn
00:54Don't get it twisted, any magician who fools Penn and Teller gets a Fool Us trophy and a slot in Penn and Teller's show and international bragging rights for the rest of their lives. Here's our first possible bragger
01:21Hi, my name is Marco Glandia, and I'm from Amsterdam. I'm mainly a director of TV commercials and other things, but I'm also a magician.
01:34When I was young, I really knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a storyteller, create new worlds, basically direct things, but I didn't know that back then.
01:42I started with skateboard videos and 25 years later I'm shooting commercials with big talent.
01:49I like to play with images. I like to experiment with sound.
01:54What I do on film, I also do it in real life. I spend my summers doing interactive theatre installations with a big group of friends.
02:00And that's where I learned to use my magic in a more theatrical, cinematic way. I'm telling stories, I'm traveling the world, I'm doing what I wanted to do when I was 12.
02:11And I'm still sort of 12 in my mind. Penn and Teller have created this act especially for you. It contains everything that I love to do. I hope you guys love it as well.
02:18Put your hands together for the inventive mind of Marco Grandia.
02:28In a world not far away from ours, a unique man was born. Born with the head of a bison, he had to deal with the cruelty and misunderstanding from those around him.
02:39So he would often go where he felt at home, in nature. There is where he developed his magical powers.
02:45Today, he is here among us to tell his story. Dear audience, please welcome, Jones Jones Labrie.
02:56Born in an apple orchard during the full moon, Jones had a strong connection with nature.
03:04He has the ability to take simple elements and transform them into extraordinary creations.
03:08When Jones Jones is surrounded by nature, his powers are the strongest.
03:18Jones learned that if you put love into something as small as an apple seed,
03:25it will grow and grow until the love becomes visible.
03:46One day he received an invitation from a certain ten in Peller, a gentleman that owned a circus and were really eager to meet him.
03:59So he went to visit them to see their acts. And out of nowhere she fell from the sky.
04:04Brooke, the amazing trapeze artist. She saw the broken boy in him. He saw her natural inner beauty.
04:13Without hesitation, he signed the contract the man offered him.
04:16Finally, respected for his abilities and close to the woman he fell in love with.
04:34Well, this is how Jones imagined it would be.
04:37But in reality it was torture. They were barely fed and worked long hours.
04:46Performers were locked in their caravans at night.
04:53Jones was not hired to perform. His contract said that he had to make enough money for them to retire.
04:58All right, bison boy. He's a nickel. And I'll go and make a lot of money.
05:07Jones started to betray his powers to make them enough money.
05:22He wanted to get out of there as fast as possible. Take Brooke with him.
05:25Being disconnected with nature made him lose his powers.
05:43Hey, put that apple down. That's more than enough money. Just bring us a suitcase and take all the performers with you. We don't need them anymore.
06:01Being united with Brooke after all this time gave Jones his power back. With their love combined, it became even stronger than before.
06:22He made a game even stronger than before.
06:23He made a game even stronger than before.
06:52Marco, I loved your performance and your movie. Does the story from this act spring from your life?
07:09I knew you were gonna ask that. But no, not really. No, no. I never had a bison head.
07:15does being a magician make you a better director or does being a director make you a better
07:20magician i think both actually i think it's about telling stories it's about provoking emotions or
07:27creating emotions in people which is things that i find interesting and it's both in directing and
07:32both in magic either way there's something to say for it yeah all right marco let's find out if the
07:37boys have been fooled by your vices let's see pen and teller good luck marco we pride ourselves
07:44at doing things on this show that are all over the place but you have created a piece of
07:50magical theater that is just unbelievable we are just flabbergasted and furthermore you've done it
08:00just for this show just for us i mean we're in this brooke is in this the amount of work that
08:07you've done for us is just amazing and just beautiful and so obsessive and it it leaves me
08:16with one question what the hell is wrong with you it's so amazing thank you if we had a trophy for
08:28the most unusual thing we've ever had the strangest thing the most mind-blowing thing we would have 12
08:36seasons worth coming down you you didn't fool us but you flattered us blew our minds flabbergasted us
08:45and just honored us in the most unusual way possible just amazing marco thank you very much
08:52well marco you didn't fool them but boy was that a beautiful story we loved it thank you for letting
09:00me star in your film yeah yeah you're welcome that was incredible
09:03marco gandhi everyone thank you so much marco
09:08when we say pen and teller take on the best we mean it see them take on more of magic's greatest
09:17when fool us returns
09:19welcome back to the magic capital of the world here to supply some more of that magic is our next
09:38performer luxembourg is a country smaller than rhode island i'm one of the only full-time magicians here
09:46a big fish in a small pound i do card magic mainly and it's a serious thing to me for me a single
09:53deck is as versatile as a musical instrument you express yourself in a deep and personal way by how
10:00you move your hands my first time on fullest i did lego magic trying to be unique we love the routine
10:09and we think we have a pretty good idea how you did it bad move i didn't fool them at all
10:15but tonight we play at cards something i've done my whole life pen and teller know a lot
10:23but they don't know it all no one does and i truly believe there's a chance
10:28it's time to witness the luxembourg legend remain of sylvan juzon hello thank you so much
10:39thanks a lot you're welcome tonight i'd like to try something very special for you thank you yeah because
10:47you see most of the time when magicians say i'm going to teach you how a trick is done they don't
10:53do that they do not do that around here so tonight i will really teach you okay how a trick is not done
11:00oh all right yeah maybe in the process i can fool you we'll see so first things first some magicians
11:08would pull out a deck of cards that have been secretly prepared in a very specific order to
11:12help them find selections okay i am not doing that okay good not at all cards can be cut so cutting only
11:21once is not enough to make sure the deck is not stuck in my favor if you want to cut you can do what
11:27we call multiple cuts like that okay the best way is what we call the refill shuffle where you just
11:36reflote the cards as it all right but if i have for instance uh 52 aces of spade i could cut and
11:43shuffle all day this wouldn't change a thing all right so that's why i have to show you that no two
11:49cards are the same yes i am not using duplicates that's for the faces because obviously for the backs
11:56that's the exact opposite i mean this back is exactly the same as this one and this one and this one
12:03because i am not a marked man all right okay thank you so much and even though we're in vegas this trick
12:10is not done with uh strippers or basically anything that would creep my style okay okay good so far so
12:18good you with me okay now some magicians would also try to have you select a very specific card
12:25i am not doing that instead i'll ask you brooke to make two pies if you can okay anywhere you want
12:32excellent so far so good yes okay i will turn my head away because i don't want to see your cards but
12:37please don't forget it okay got it got it got it all right and now in theory i could try to do something
12:46very sneaky with my hands while i distract you with i don't know something uh like that
12:55it works and while you all look away i very quickly place your card where i wanted to
13:00but i'm not doing that don't watch the monkey all right okay good so instead i will do this multiple
13:08cut sequence that i like and some magicians will not let you be part of the shuffling sequence
13:15but i'm not doing that okay so i will make some pies like this i think we have enough room for
13:23maybe eight piles all right and brooke i'll just follow your instructions on how to reassemble the
13:29deck so for my right hand please point to any pile you want this one over there excellent and then for
13:35my left hand yes and right and left you got the idea yep and right right very basic and left okay and
13:45right so far so good and left yeah okay i'm pretty sure now you still have one decision to make book is
13:51it left on right or right on left right on left are you sure no yes yes yes right on left yes right on
13:59left like this yes okay so basically you just decided that this card gets followed by this one then come
14:06this one then this one and and your but for instance this card could have been card number seven or nine
14:12or eleven or 25 and this is not a lie ben can i ask you a number please somewhere in the deck
14:22uh 35 35 so just to be sure you want brooke's card dead on at 35 you do not want 36 you do not want
14:3334. that's correct 35 and just to be sure you do not want to change your mind i do want to change my mind
14:4126 26 just to be sure you want brooke's card dead on at 26. you do not want 27. i do not want you do
14:51not want 25. no okay i could try 26. i don't know i don't know i do nothing but i do it anyway one two
15:02three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen fifteen sixteen
15:07seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty one two three four five and twenty six one more would have been the three
15:16of five is it your card no good so far so good okay thank you sorry no it's okay it's excellent uh yeah
15:25you have to tell me by the way what was your card two of diamonds two of diamonds okay and that brooke
15:32is how you do not do yep the card trick thank you wow sylvan juzel everyone wow wow amazing let's talk about
15:45this that was impressive i'm so glad it worked yes me too me too i got worried when he mixed it up and
15:53decided to change the card number no problem so i know nothing about luxembourg um luxembourg first of
15:59of all it's a country because sometimes people think it's a german city no it's a country capital
16:04city is luxembourg city which might be confusing as well it's very small it's the two-thirds of rhode
16:11island so you take your smallest state and you take the two-thirds of it and you have my country
16:16so sylvan you told us all the ways that you didn't do this trick let's see if the boys know the ways that
16:22you did do the trick are you ready yes i am hello sylvan that was that was a great great routine and i
16:29want to tell you right up front right up front we want to give you a trophy just for the monkey with
16:35his ass on fire i mean if this game were truly played fairly and honestly we would bring that trophy down
16:45right now and say monkey with the ass on fire you win good night we love you but we were supposed to
16:52be talking about magic and that magic trick was astonishing that was a great great great card trick
16:58but i don't think that you actually uh were teaching people how not to do a trick we think you were
17:05teaching people how to fool pen and tell her that's what we think we think you fooled us
17:20you love you so much thank you so much thank you thank you so van juzon
17:42oh my gosh so van juzon just got a fool us trophy and he may not be alone tonight pen and teller will
17:50take on more magicians when we come back
18:07welcome back pen and teller have been fooled once tonight so we know it's possible
18:11let's see if this next magician can fool them too
18:13i am definitely a showman as a kid i got that legendary first magic kit and i started acting
18:22like a magician the second i opened the box i am a magician a musician and a variety show master of
18:29ceremonies the audience's energy is a life force to me berlin is the perfect place to be a magician
18:37because it's a city of flux and change in the cold war there were two berlins the berlin wall split the
18:43city in half time stopped and when the wall came down time started again i think that's what drew me to
18:53magic this idea of change from this to that from skeptic to believer and if i win the fullest trophy
19:03then tonight will be the night that change me give it up for berlin baffler alexander murk

22:45And guys, if you're still wondering how this works, I can tell you, the magic lies within the bottle
22:53What are the essential skills for a magician?
23:07Performing magic, of course, but I think telling a story is more important.
23:13Is there an underlining story in this act?
23:15The schnapps?
23:16Yes
23:17Drinking?
23:19Obvious
23:20Obvious, yeah. The very easy thing.
23:23Do you think you have a shot at fooling Penn and Teller?
23:26I really don't know
23:28I have no idea. I have no idea.
23:30Are you ready?
23:31I'm ready.
23:32Boys, are you ready?
23:33Yes, we are.
23:34Alexander, that is the perfect cabaret act.
23:39Just perfect in every way.
23:41Just the right level of whimsical and funny and the right level of amazing.
23:46It's just a wonderful act that we like from beginning to end and your performance of it is just beautiful.
23:52Now, fortunately, you're using a variation on a prop that Max Malini used and also another duo used, Penn and Teller.
24:02We've done a version of this trick and we know that that trick is also often ended with a shot glass with liquid in it.
24:12So we're familiar with all of that, which is rather unfortunate for you because we know a lot of the technology on this.
24:21But we don't know how you refilled the damn glass.
24:24So you fooled us.
24:26What?
24:38Alexander Mark, everyone.
24:42Congratulations.
24:55Alexander Mark is a winner.
24:57Will we see any more?
24:58We'll come back and find out when Fool Us returns.
25:12Welcome back to Fool Us, where this next magician just stopped by to entertain us.
25:19Hello, I'm Kiona and I'm from London.
25:24Make it rain!
25:25Last year when I was on Fool Us, I had an incredible experience.
25:29But it was also really intimidating because I've never performed in front of an audience so big.
25:34You've got the two ladders there, which is really nice, and you get all the different color papers.
25:39I like bright colors and I have a lot of funky colorful clothes.
25:43Color is also great for misdirection in magic.
25:46I use it to help me fool people.
25:48When I'm not performing magic, I help teach at a special educational needs school.
25:53The idea for tonight's trick came to me one day when I was working with the children.
25:57It sort of just clicked.
25:59So I am really excited to be back on the Fool Us stage.
26:03Hopefully I won't be as nervous as last time.
26:06It's time to see whether I've learned enough to fool Penn and Teller.
26:17Making her way to our stage from across the pond is Kiona.
26:24Hello.
26:25So, as you know from my introduction, I help teach kids at school that are special educational needs.
26:31Now, no matter what their struggles or difficulties are, I feel inspired by them every single day.
26:37And that, that truly is magical.
26:40But, because some of the students struggle to recognize numbers and colors, I created a game.
26:45A game where the students will hide numbered blocks, just like these, underneath colored cups, just like these ones.
26:52And I attempt to match all of their choices, but without looking.
26:56So it's a little bit like mind reading.
26:59The kids absolutely love it.
27:01Hopefully you will too.
27:03But the thing is, I've never taken on a fully grown adult before.
27:07So, Brooke, would you be my incredible helper tonight, please?
27:10I would love to.
27:15It's nice to see you again.
27:16To see you too. Welcome.
27:17Please could you stand behind the table on the opposite side of the screen from me?
27:20Sure.
27:21Okay, thank you.
27:22Okay.
27:23Now that we're on opposite sides of the screen, Brooke can't see anything that I'm doing.
27:28And I can't see anything that Brooke's doing.
27:31Brooke.
27:32Can you hear me well?
27:33Yes.
27:34Can you see me well?
27:35No.
27:36Okay, good.
27:37It's working well.
27:38In front of you, as you can see, there are five positions, one to five.
27:41Yes.
27:42Please could you take five numbered blocks and place them in a completely random order on the positions in front of you.
27:47And then once you've done that, please could you take five colored cups and then place those on top.
27:52Please could you do that now?
27:53Yes.
27:55Now, whilst Brooke does that, I would like to point out we have the exact same setup.
28:00Five positions, one to five, six numbered blocks and six colored cups.
28:07Brooke, have you finished?
28:09Almost.
28:10I'm putting the cups on top of my numbers, right?
28:13I'm finished.
28:14Okay, perfect.
28:16Now, before we carry on, please could you take the leftover cup, the one that's not been used, and the leftover numbered cube that's not being used and just place them out of sight under the table away.
28:29Okay.
28:30I've done that.
28:31Now, I could claim I'm going to use my psychic powers, but in truth, I'm going to use logic, the power of the obvious.
28:41And obviously, I'm going to get this right.
28:44So, uh, okay, Brooke, we're probably going to do this, and then Brooke will do this, and then, like, um, so maybe you should do this, and then, and then this, and then this.
28:59Okay.
29:00Yeah.
29:01That seems about right.
29:02Now for the hardest part, matching the colored cup with the numbered cube.
29:07But I'm going to attempt to do this using associative engineering, known in its neurological circles by its scientific term, guessing.
29:19Okay.
29:20So, Brooke's probably done a pink, and then she's probably done a yellow, and then a yellow, and then a green, and then she's probably done a blue, and then, yeah.
29:34And then, yeah.
29:35Okay.
29:36Cool.
29:37Brooke.
29:38Yeah.
29:39On position number one, what color cup do you have?
29:43Pink.
29:44Okay.
29:45I also have the pink, and Brooke, could you please lift up the pink cup, place it behind the numbered
29:50block so that everyone can see the number, and let everyone know what number you have?
29:53Number two.
29:54And I also have the number two.
29:57Well, thank you.
30:00Going well.
30:01Brooke.
30:02Again, I think you get it.
30:04What color do you have on position number two?
30:06Yellow.
30:07Perfect.
30:08And underneath the yellow cup, what number do you have?
30:10Five.
30:11And I also have the number five.
30:14Okay, Brooke, on position number three, what color?
30:19Green.
30:20I also have green.
30:21That's good.
30:22And what number do you have underneath the green cup?
30:24Number four.
30:25And I also have the number four.
30:28Okay, Brooke, on position number four, again, same thing.
30:33What color cup do you have?
30:35Orange.
30:36Oh.
30:37Um, okay, please don't move anything.
30:41Okay, you know what?
30:43Um, let's just move on for now.
30:45Brooke, um, position number five, what color cup do you have?
30:48Blue.
30:49Okay.
30:50Again, please don't touch anything yet.
30:53I've got it.
30:56Remember, I never said that I would match Brooke's order.
31:01I only said I would match all of Brooke's choices.
31:04Brooke, with that in mind, what number do you have underneath the orange cup?
31:11Number three.
31:13Number three.
31:14And I also have the number three.
31:17Under my orange cup.
31:21So finally, Brooke, don't forget there are one of two choices here because we did start with six numbered blocks.
31:28Brooke, what number do you have underneath the blue cup?
31:35Number six.
31:37And I also have the number six.
31:38And that, folks, is a 100% match.
31:47Well done.
31:49How long have you been a magician?
31:50So just a little over a year now.
32:05Wow.
32:06So are you going to stick with it?
32:08Yeah, so for a casting website I started talking to people and they said that they like quite a lot of actors
32:16Because they're usually quite quick thinking on their feet so they can go in and help and also when I do the work
32:22It's so rewarding seeing children that really struggle come through and there are some schools
32:28I've worked at and then a year later
32:30I've come back and some students that are like five six that couldn't talk now can talk and they're starting to say a few words
32:36And it's so they're like hello, and it's like really exciting. So you bring them so much joy. Yeah
32:41It's really nice. Well Kiona your trick was amazing, but let's see if you fooled the boys. Are we ready?
32:45Yeah
32:47Hey Kiona, I gotta tell you
32:49Just a great great performance your style on stage is just so wonderful and tying it in to what you obviously have
32:57Such a strong passion for is just really really beautiful. You speak so well on stage. It's just very very wonderful
33:04What's hard about a trick like this is that the way it's done is so new that we don't even have code words for it
33:14We don't even have cutesy little things to say, you know if you had something from 200 years ago
33:20We can say all sorts of stuff to tell you those kinds of things, you know
33:23We can get the word crimp and shell and everything else in there
33:27But this stuff we don't have code words for it's fairly new and you can seal that so well by having props that are just
33:36Simple and nothing could possibly be gimmicked about them and the truth is
33:41Nothing is gimmicked about them. Those are just blocks. Those are just cups, but you've got all sorts of other stuff going on
33:50The blocks and the cups are completely innocent, but everything else including you is not
33:59At least that's what we think we think that there's not as much innocence in you were the things around as there are in the cups in the blocks
34:07That's what we think do they know how you did your magic. Yes, definitely. They're very small
34:13Thank you. You should compliment us before we do this
34:21Well, Kiona, that was wonderful. Thank you for coming to fool us. We love it. Thank you very much
34:31Coming up, our next magicians are a duo with a hundred years of experience
34:36See Penn and Teller perform right after this
34:43We're gonna talk about love and how much we believe in love and we asked for a couple from the audience that were in love you guys are in love
35:12What's your name? Rob Rob and what's your name? Alex. We don't want you to have that part of your love there
35:17How long have you been married? 17 years 17 years? Goodness gracious
35:22We believe that your love transcends time and space so we're gonna prove that to you
35:28We're gonna take a picture of you right now
35:29Now you can make a hand gesture that shows your love for Rob as he takes a picture there
35:35I can't make a heart with one hand
35:37That's interesting. That's close enough. That's close enough. So this is a very special picture
35:45right here of
35:47Alex for you Rob as it develops now, we're gonna take a picture of Rob for Alex. Oh, that's the gesture sure
35:55See he could think of a gesture and
35:57Now we have a picture right here of Rob for Alex
36:01Hey fellas. You can see Alex pretty clearly. How are you? It's Matt King from the Excalibur
36:07Hi Matt. Hey. How you doing man? Good to see you. Nice to see you. This is Rob
