00:00I saw that in the Nickelodeon once and I always wanted to do it.
00:07Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best movies about young
00:13couples falling in love and making us fall in love right along with them. Some of these stories
00:19are the core of the film, so a spoiler alert is in effect.
00:22Art thou not Romeo and Montague?
00:25Neither fair maid, if either thee dislike.
00:28How came so, Heather? Tell me and wherefore?
00:32Number 30. All the Bright Places
00:35There are a lot of movies about high school romances, but few that tell their stories with so much hurt, grief, and loss.
00:42All the Bright Places rips our hearts out and puts them back together again.
00:47And there's something about this tragic love story that is intoxicating.
00:51Where would you go if you could go anywhere?
00:54I'd go to a place no one's ever been before.
00:58Undiscovered. Untouched. You could go. If you want.
01:04Violet is mentally recovering from her sister's death when she meets Finch, who has struggles of his own.
01:10Throughout the film, we are endeared to them as they try to help each other heal their traumas and see the bright side of life.
01:17It's not a happy ending for all involved, but it's possibly a more realistic one this way, tragic as it seems.
01:24You can be that bright place with infinite capacities.
01:30Number 29. Lucas
01:33We can't resist a teen film from the 80s.
01:36This is one that often gets overlooked, despite the fact that it's full of memorable performances from up and coming actors.
01:43She was 13 and I guess he was about the same.
01:47Why?
01:49Two different worlds, huh?
01:53Romeo and Juliet?
01:55Yeah.
01:56That can be a problem.
01:58Corey Haim stars in the titular role, and his pursuit of Maggie is both adorable and heartbreaking.
02:05We see them share funny and heartfelt moments over a summer, all for it to crash down when Maggie starts dating Cappy, played by a young Charlie Sheen.
02:14If you're feeling nostalgic for that high school, young love, and a good slow clapping scene that makes it clear that the outcast finally belongs, this one is for you.
02:37Number 28. Little Manhattan
02:39Way before he was helping Katniss defeat the Capitol in the Hunger Games franchise, Josh Hutcherson was a little heartbreaker playing opposite Charlie Ray.
02:48They play Gabe and Rosemary, pre-teens in the Big Apple navigating their mutual crushes and dealing with issues that only kids could understand.
02:56Why is she looking at me? Am I that hideous? Do I smell?
03:01You, um, come here often? Central Park? Um, yeah.
03:07What kind of question is that? I hate myself.
03:11Little Manhattan is an adorable example of how much fun first love is, even if it doesn't end up being your last love.
03:18This movie reminds us that no matter how old you are, the first cut is the deepest, and that it really is better to have loved and lost.
03:26I don't think I'm ready to be in love. I'm not ready and I'm doing it.
03:33Number 27. Summer of Meza
03:36You don't need a big budget or a stereotypical romance to pack a punch with an audience. Summer of Meza is living proof of that.
03:43I need some time to think about everything.
03:52With the backdrop of a 1980 summer in Cape Cod, we see Lily, John and Meza navigate their feelings and confront their true desires.
04:01Lily discovers her feelings for Meza and has to let go of the love she thought she felt for John.
04:07Did we mention that this movie's budget was a whopping $400? It was also shot in just six days, and there was only one crew member.
04:15It's a painfully authentic production, which really feels like you're going along with this journey of self-discovery alongside them.
04:22Seems like we should go with a practical and sensible one. But you have to follow your heart. You have to give that a try.
04:39Number 26. Goodbye First Love
04:42This film is in the language of love and takes place in Paris, so it's already got the setting for a great love story.
04:49But it's the performances, plot, and chemistry of the characters that carries this film.
04:53I love you, Camille.
04:56But you would want to be everything.
04:59It's not possible.
05:02But you're all good.
05:04Camille loses her first love, Sullivan, when he moves to South America, but she finds love again years later in Lorenz.
05:11What follows is a love triangle that tears her in two different directions. It's heartbreaking and gripping to watch her navigate it all.
05:19If you've been heartbroken, particularly at a tender age like Camille, this film hits particularly close to home.
05:26But it still leaves you with fleeting feelings of hope and happiness.
05:30But I know that the link that connects us is stronger than the time that passes. And I leave you with hope to find you one day where we'll be more free, more large, more dignified of our love.
05:41Number 25. The way he looks.
05:44This artier coming of age takes us on a journey with Leonardo as he unsuspectingly falls for Gabriel.
05:51It's the quiet moments in this film that really leave a lasting impact.
05:55Leo eloquently deals with his friendships and romantic relationships as the tides change in his world.
06:02His sight impairment acting as a symbol. He learns about who he is and what he wants, which is endearing to witness.
06:09This film isn't just about young romantic love, as we also see platonic love between Leonardo and his best friend, Giovanni.
06:39The way he looks proves that stories of young love don't need to be tragic, harrowing or full of rejection and hard lessons learned.
06:47It can instead be fun, light and meaningful.
06:51Leo.
06:53If you stole a kiss from someone, how would you do it?
07:09You told me you couldn't believe in somebody who didn't believe in you. I believed in you. Always believed in you. Just didn't believe in me.
07:32After hitting home runs with 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club, it's clear that John Hughes and Molly Ringwald were a pair to be reckoned with.
07:40In Ringwald's personal favorite of her own films, she plays Andy, who's best friends with a young John Cryer as Ducky.
07:48They both come from the wrong side of the tracks, but when Blaine falls for Andy, their class divides loom until they bubble to the surface, and the film takes a turn from fun love to mature revelations.
08:01Still, the ending is polarizing but beloved, as Andy and Blaine are eventually able to come together, with Ducky's blessing of course.
08:09At least there's potential with a girl he meets at prom.
08:31Number 23. Juno.
08:33We love Juno and Polly Bleecker, and we really love them together. But marriage coming before the baby carriage isn't exactly how their relationship goes down.
08:43I'm pregnant.
08:44What should we do?
08:56What should we do?
08:57Their unique path is nonetheless fitting for their personalities and dynamic.
09:01Even though they complement each other's traits perfectly, high school drama, pregnancy, and Juno's complicated relationship with her baby's adoptive parents stirs things up.
09:11What, are you ashamed that we did it?
09:13No.
09:14Because at least you don't have to have the evidence under your sweater. I'm a planet.
09:20Juno and Polly start off as quirky teens who are just close friends, but seeing them having to navigate becoming potential expectant parents is gut-wrenching, endearing, and even relatable.
09:32We're so happy that they get to end up together in the end as a true adolescent couple.
09:37I think I'm in love with you.
09:41You're making me this friends?
09:43No.
09:44I mean, for real.
09:46Because you're like, the coolest person I've ever met.
09:51And you don't even have to try, you know?
09:54I try really hard, actually.
09:57Number 22.
09:5910 Things I Hate About You.
10:01Remove head from sphincter, then drive!
10:11You okay?
10:12Yeah.
10:13Just a minor encounter with the shrew.
10:15That's your girlfriend's sister.
10:17Wait, that's Bianca's sister?
10:18We love a good modern take on a Shakespearean classic.
10:21And this one has us in all of the feels.
10:24As Cameron tries to win over Bianca, he has to find someone to date her sister Kat in order to respect their father's rule that Bianca can date when Kat does.
10:33This leads to hijinks between Kat and Patrick, who was initially paid to be with her, but eventually they fall hard for one another.
10:40No offense or anything.
10:41I mean, I know everyone digs your sister, but, um, she's without.
10:46You know, you're not as vile as I thought you were.
10:59Their relationship is adorable and playful, but it becomes more heartfelt and deep as their true selves and their real intentions reveal themselves.
11:07Who could forget Patrick's serenading Kat to a Frankie Valli tune?
11:11We swoon every time.
11:25Number 21. Before sunrise.
11:27You should get off the train with me here in Vienna and come check out the town.
11:30What?
11:31Come on, it'll be fun.
11:32Come on.
11:33What would we do?
11:34Um, I don't know.
11:35All I know is I have to catch an Austrian Airlines flight tomorrow morning at 9.30 and I don't really have enough money for a hotel.
11:41So I was just going to walk around and it'd be a lot more fun if you came with me.
11:45It's a night that most young folks dream of, exploring the city of Vienna with a new love interest, unpacking each other's layers and then leaving the rest in fate's hands.
11:55That's what we see with Céline and Jessie, whose impending romance and future leaves us on the edge of our seats.
12:01It's amazing to watch them go from complete strangers to people who understand the other so deeply that it's like they've known each other all of their lives.
12:10It sets the scene for the two sequels that tug at our heartstrings just as much as this one.
12:15We can't help but fall for this mesmerizing couple throughout Richard Linklater's Before trilogy.
12:20Number 20. The Half of It.
12:45Netflix has clearly found that their audience has an interest in movies about young love, because lately they've been producing tons of great original films on the topic.
12:55One of the most recent is The Half of It, which employs a unique concept with a fresh and modern-feeling twist.
13:01I'm not good with words.
13:03But you know you love her.
13:05I know. I think about her when I wake up. And when I'm doing my sprints. And when I'm eating my mom's bratwurst. And when I'm saying my prayers.
13:13That just means that you're stubborn. Not that you're in love.
13:15No, it's love.
13:16High school jock Paul has a crush on a girl named Aster, but isn't exactly a wordsmith. So he hires smart girl Ellie to pen a love letter to her.
13:25There's an added level of complication though, because it turns out that Ellie is in love with Aster too.
13:31The movie explores the meanings of true love, which are relevant no matter how old you are.
13:36I'll see you in a couple years.
13:48Number 19. Brooklyn.
13:50Brooklyn, released in 2015, stars Saoirse Ronan as Eilish, a young Irish girl who moved to New York in order to carve out a better life for herself.
13:59She secretly gets married there to an Italian American man named Tony, but then life unexpectedly brings her back to her home country.
14:06She has to make the difficult decision between staying in the small town where she grew up with an Irishman she meets or going back to Brooklyn to be with the one she loves.
14:14I'd imagined a different life for myself.
14:17I understand. But your life here could be just as good.
14:23These are difficult decisions to make at her age, but in the end, she decides to follow her heart.
14:28And then you'll catch yourself thinking about something or someone who has no connection with the past.
14:38Someone who's only yours.
14:41And you'll realize that this is where your life is.
14:49Number 18. Five Feet Apart.
14:52Fans of The Fault in Our Stars, more on that one later, will inevitably enjoy this 2019 film.
14:59You're not wrong.
15:00You think that's cute?
15:01Do you think it's cute?
15:03It's a tearjerker, though, so get your tissues ready.
15:06Five Feet Apart centers on Stella and Will, two young people who are both suffering from cystic fibrosis.
15:12Due to their disease, they're not allowed to go within six feet of one another because of the risk of cross-infection.
15:18The couple has to decide what risks are worth it and face big questions about what actually makes life worth living.
15:25Meanwhile, this movie feels all the more relevant now because of the global pandemic.
15:30We need that touch from the one we love almost as much as we need air to breathe.
15:36But I never understood the importance of touch.
15:40His touch.
15:44Until I couldn't have it.
15:46Number 17. The Spectacular Now.
15:49For some reason, this 2013 movie flew under the radar, despite starring YA darling Shailene Woodley.
15:56It may be underrated, but you don't want to miss this quiet and tender romance flick.
16:01So I think that we can help each other out.
16:05What do you say?
16:07Focusing on a pair of high school seniors who initially seem supremely mismatched, it has a darker edge and addresses some serious issues that aren't your typical rom-com fodder.
16:17Do you not see that I am bad for you? You need to get away from me!
16:20Sutter is popular but faces struggles with alcoholism, while Amy is more of the typical girl next door.
16:26But both face issues that they realize they're better primed to deal with together than apart.
16:31Number 16. Blue is the Warmest Color
16:34Blue is the Warmest Color tells the story of two young women, Emma and Adele, as they grow fond of each other, make lots of love, and begin a life together.
16:43However, outside factors and conflicting ambitions soon get in the way of their romance and domestic bliss.
16:49While stories like this have been told for centuries, this movie comes with a sprawling three-hour runtime,
17:08and attempts to immerse the viewer in long, complex scenes concerning various aspects of first relationships.
17:14It's a very relatable story of young love, growing up, and complacent domesticity that may or may not come between two passionate lovers.
17:22Number 15. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
17:48Steven Chbosky's novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower created a legion of fans when it was released,
17:54and a whole new generation got to experience the story when he adapted it for the big screen.
17:59Perks deals with a lot of serious issues, including mental illness and sexual abuse,
18:04but it also portrays a young boy falling in love for the first time.
18:08In many ways, this isn't your typical romance, with many levels of complication coming between Charlie and Sam.
18:14Sam, Sam, I really didn't mean anything by it, I'm sorry.
18:20What the hell is wrong with you?
18:22But it definitely does a good job of showing what happens when you love someone who doesn't seem to feel quite the same way about you.
18:28Although, in this case, she comes around in the end.
18:31And you're not small. You're beautiful.
18:41Number 14. To All The Boys I've Loved Before
18:44But if this wasn't what he wanted, then why did he come to the field of desire?
18:52It was fated that we should meet like this.
18:56Hey!
18:57Lara Jean Covey mostly keeps to herself, penning love letters to the boys she has crushes on,
19:03without ever intending on actually mailing them.
19:05When her box of letters mysteriously gets sent out, however, her life is turned upside down.
19:10She ends up getting into a mutually beneficial fake relationship with one of the recipients,
19:15but their charade gets very real very quickly.
19:18This is a high school romance that feels reminiscent of the John Hughes classics,
19:22with the brightly colored aesthetic to match.
19:24If you're looking for a lighthearted tale of young love, this one is just perfect.
19:28Number 13. The Princess Bride
19:37Hey, it doesn't all have to be cool indie flicks.
19:48We like corny, silly rom-com adventure fantasy movies too.
19:51The Princess Bride is a classic fairytale-esque movie about a farmhand, Wesley,
19:55and his lover, the Princess Buttercup.
20:06However, as is often the case in fairytales, things get in the way of a happily ever after,
20:11including Buttercup's betrothed, Prince Humperdinck, giant screaming eels,
20:15and a six-fingered man.
20:21You know, the usual stuff.
20:22The movie is a touching story about love in one's youth,
20:25and the childish magic of fairytales.
20:27It's a love story mixed with Rob Reiner's signature hilarious satire,
20:31and it's an undeniable classic.
20:33Five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure.
20:37This one left them all behind.
20:42Number 12. Like Crazy
20:44We all know long-distance relationships are awful,
20:47and that's perfectly exemplified in this film.
20:49Felicity Jones stars as Anna,
20:51a British exchange student who falls in love with Anton Yelchin's American Jacob.
20:56What are we gonna do after we graduate?
20:58We...
21:00whistle something out.
21:03Don't think about it now.
21:06Like Crazy perfectly captures the electric first moments of a relationship,
21:10when consequences seemingly don't matter.
21:12Like a student visa, because she's too caught up in their romance.
21:15Anna makes a misstep with her expired student visa,
21:18and is subsequently deported.
21:20Which understandably puts a strain on their relationship.
21:23Whatever. What do you wanna do?
21:24I don't know. I'm really tired.
21:26Yeah, so am I. So, do you wanna go or what?
21:28Um, do you wanna get something to eat?
21:30It's a relatable story about the sheer joy, desperation,
21:33and ultimate carelessness that comes with falling deeply in love as a young adult.
21:37Number 11. Moonrise Kingdom.
21:40What kind of bird are you?
21:42I'm a raven.
21:47Moonrise Kingdom is a very touching story about childhood love and innocence,
21:51told through the lens of Wes Anderson's specific aesthetic.
21:54The movie tells the story of two introverted 12-year-olds, Sam and Susie,
21:58as they run away and explore the wilderness together.
22:04Hot on their trail are Sam's scoutmaster, Susie's parents, and the local police.
22:08Given that this is a Wes Anderson project,
22:10the story is wonderfully told through the escapist fantasies,
22:13and of course, gorgeous uses of color.
22:16It's a movie that nails the feelings of childhood summers and epic adventures,
22:20and allows it to recapture our more imaginative, stress-free, and innocent youths.
22:25If only for 90-something hopelessly nostalgic minutes.
22:28I'm glad I got your news, Susie.
22:30I think you've still got lightning in you.
22:45Number 10. Call Me By Your Name.
22:48This movie tells the story of the blossoming friendship
22:50and eventual relationship of the introverted Elio,
22:53and the older, more confident Oliver.
22:56The story beautifully captures the hesitant initial steps of a relationship,
23:00including the painful, do they like me period of questioning
23:03of each other's motives and feelings.
23:05I could kiss you if I could.
23:07When the two finally get together,
23:09they peel away each other's layers to discover a more intimate and personal connection.
23:13And yet, there's that persistent lingering feeling that this relationship probably will not last.
23:18It's a perfect cinematic example of the initial hesitations, sexual and emotional connections,
23:23and undercurrents of tragedy that litter everyone's early forays into love.
23:27Is it a video?
23:30I have touched you for the last time.
23:36Number 9. Love, Simon.
23:38Sometimes I feel like I'm stuck on a ferris wheel.
23:41One minute I'm on top of the world, and the next I'm at rock bottom.
23:44Over and over all day long, because a lot of my life is great,
23:48but nobody knows I'm gay.
23:50Blue.
23:51While we've seen more and more diverse representation in film as the years have gone on,
23:55this movie, released in 2018, was actually the first film put out by a major studio
24:00that features a romance between gay teenagers.
24:03Love, Simon broke boundaries bringing this LGBTQ plus love story to the screen
24:08and showcased the experience of coming out for a modern adolescent.
24:12The relationship between Simon and Blue is one for the ages,
24:15bringing us a rom-com that feels at once fresh and modern,
24:19and simultaneously like an inevitable classic.
24:22Kinda crazy, huh?
24:23I didn't think you'd come.
24:25Me neither.
24:26Number 8. Titanic.
24:31I'm flying!
24:33Jack.
24:34Considering the harrowing journey they find themselves on,
24:37Jack and Rose are forced to act mature beyond their years,
24:40making us forget that Rose is just 17 years old when she boards the ship of dreams.
24:44Despite her young age, Rose knows exactly what she wants
24:48and doesn't want her life to look like.
24:50Her engagement to the wealthy but cruel cow makes her feel trapped,
24:53so she strikes up a romance with the itinerant Jack Dawson,
24:57who makes her feel alive.
24:59Titanic is about many things,
25:01but it's Rose's willingness to pursue her dreams
25:03and do anything for the man she loves that makes it so powerful.
25:06If only it had a happier ending.
25:09I'll never let go.
25:12I promise.
25:15Number 7. Say Anything.
25:21Hi.
25:22This one is a classic for a reason.
25:24Say Anything is about Lloyd Dobler,
25:26an average high school student with little ambition,
25:28and Diane Cort, the school's valedictorian
25:31whose father pressures her into continuing a prestigious academic career.
25:35It doesn't feel right to me.
25:36I don't even have the right luggage yet.
25:38However, these two seemingly incompatible individuals
25:41fall in love at high school graduation
25:43and commence a summer full of disapproving parents,
25:46good music, and stolen cash.
25:48It's a classic not only for its stellar performances
25:51and famous boombox scene,
25:52but also because it stunningly captures the idealism
25:55that often comes with first loves.
26:05Diane's father may be right when he tells her that Lloyd is unambitious,
26:08but we don't care.
26:09Young love conquers all.
26:11Nobody thought we'd do this.
26:13Nobody really thinks it will work, do they?
26:16No.
26:17We just described every great success story.
26:21Number 6. A Walk to Remember.
26:23Released in 2002, this movie, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks,
26:28struck a chord with a generation of teens.
26:30A Walk to Remember tells of a tragic and doomed romance
26:33between bad boy Landon and Minister's daughter Jamie.
26:37But in all fairness, you did warn me, right?
26:40That's right.
26:41While the two already have obstacles to overcome,
26:43none is bigger than the fact that Jamie is living with terminal cancer.
26:47Now would be the time to say something.
26:52I told you not to fall in love with me.
26:58This tale is a devastating one, as we watch Landon grasp onto the final months of Jamie's life
27:03before he has to spend the rest of his existence without her.
27:06Before she met him, Jamie had kept herself closed off to the world,
27:10but the love they share lets her truly live her life to the fullest while she can.
27:14Jamie and I had a perfect summer together, with more love than lots of people know in a lifetime.
27:22Number 5. The Fault in Our Stars.
27:25The concept of The Fault in Our Stars may seem maudlin,
27:28but underneath the dreary premise is a beautiful love story.
27:31Hi, Hazel Grace.
27:33Hi.
27:34How would you like to go on a picnic with me?
27:36The movie tells the story of cancer-stricken teens Hazel and Augustus,
27:40as they fall in love, travel to Amsterdam, and find comfort in their situations through each other.
27:45Think of all the beauty in everything around you.
27:48While most of us hopefully can't relate to the cancer aspect,
27:52the movie nevertheless tells a deeply heartfelt and identifiable story
27:56about the powers of first love and the feelings of safety we get from companionship.
28:01It's not only about young love, but friendship, hope, and the power of optimism.
28:06You gave me forever, within the numbered days, and for that I am eternally grateful.
28:18Number 4. My Girl.
28:21In this movie, Macaulay Culkin plays Thomas J. Sennett,
28:24an 11-year-old boy who suffers from severe allergies.
28:27He befriends and later grows an attachment to Veda Sultanfuss, a neglected hypochondriac.
28:32The two help with each other's troubles, and their relationship soon blossoms after a cute first kiss.
28:37Two and a half. Three.
28:43However, tragedy strikes, and the budding romance is cut short.
28:47My Girl is a great movie about childhood innocence and learning about some painful facts of life.
28:52His face hurts. And where is his glasses? He can't see without his glasses.
28:57We all had that one childhood friend who helped us grow into the people we are today.
29:01And My Girl is the perfect embodiment of those feelings and that particular time in our lives.
29:05Thomas J. had this on him. I thought you might like to have it.
29:11Number 3. The Notebook.
29:14You just can't go wrong with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
29:17Talk about the most hashtag couple goals couple on the face of the earth.
29:21If you're a bird, I'm a bird.
29:23The Notebook, as we're sure you all know, tells the story of the poor Noah Calhoun falling in love with the rich Ally Hamilton.
29:29You're going to have a million things to do. You've got so much ahead of you.
29:34Don't talk like that.
29:35It's true. I'm not going to have nice things, fancy things.
29:39What follows is a great representation of the optimism of a new relationship,
29:43and the outer forces that can seemingly conspire against a happy young couple,
29:47like disapproving and invasive parents.
29:49And unlike most of the movies on this list,
29:51their romance succeeds and blossoms into maturity and old age,
29:55proving that sometimes, young love can become our true love.
30:03Number 2. Flipped.
30:05The first day I met Bryslovski, I flipped.
30:08It was those eyes.
30:10Something in those dazzling eyes.
30:13We don't know what went wrong with the marketing of this movie,
30:15but despite the fact that the book on which it was based had a serious fan base,
30:19Flipped only managed to bring in a little over $4 million at the box office.
30:24But despite its poor financial showing,
30:26Flipped is an extremely heartwarming and tender story of a couple consisting of Bryce and Julie,
30:31who meet as children and experience a rollercoaster of feelings for one another.
30:35Until recently, I would have said with absolute certainty that he was greater.
30:39Far greater than the sum of his parts.
30:42But now I wasn't so sure.
30:44It seems as though their timing will never be right,
30:46with one of them being in love while the other seems indifferent.
30:49It's a relatable portrayal of a phenomenon that we've all experienced at one time or another.

31:09Number 1. Romeo and Juliet
31:12If my heart's dear love... I swear... Oh Juliet!
31:18What better pick for number 1 than the most classic story ever told about young love?
31:23You've all read Shakespeare's play in school, so there's no need to go over the plot.
31:27Some of you may think the story old and stale, especially if you saw the 1968 classic.
31:32But give Baz Luhrmann's 1996 adaptation a try, and you'll see how Shakespeare can be brought into the modern world.
31:38It's funny, touching, and tragic.
31:40And it imbues Shakespeare's words with new life, to make them work for a mainstream modern audience.
31:45Romeo, doff thy name, and for thy name, which is no part of thee, take all myself.
31:52I take thee as thy word.
31:55Whether you watch an older version or a later one, there exists no better story about the electric, senseless emotions,
32:01and fallibility of first or young love than Juliet and her Romeo.
32:06Romeo...
32:11Well, okay, West Side Story, which is also a riff on the Bard's play, was pretty cool too.
