Geoff Boycott interview during Pakistan vs Australia 1998 Day 4 Review First Test at Rawalpindi in Oct 1998
Transcript
00:00The third time of the war was 173.5 hours in the war,
00:0630 times in the war.
00:14The king was at the war.
02:19What went wrong?
02:21We have with us today a person who knows much more about cricket than anyone around the world these days.
02:30Geoffrey Bycott.
02:31One hundred and thirty-seven for nine.
02:34Fourth day, two hundred and forty-four runs the lead.
02:39What do you think?
02:40I think you've had it.
02:42The game's all over.
02:43And perhaps what about the rains?
02:46Well, you'll all have to get on your prayer match, and I still don't think it'll help you.
02:51I still think you're going to lose.
02:52I don't think it'll rain all day.
02:54And now, obviously the fourth day, and Australia definitely is out there, Pakistan, all the parts of the game.
03:02Specific player which you would think responsible for Australia getting into this commanding position?
03:08I also feel that there was room for improvement in the captaincy, the placing of the field.
03:17He's new to the job, so he'll have to grow into it a little bit, but there was a little bit left there that could have been improved upon.
03:26Too many of the Australian batsmen got singled too easily.
03:30The bowling could have been improved upon, because I think I said in an interview with you the other night, that they bowled too wide.
03:38You know, gave the Australians too much width.
03:40A light to the fact there wasn't enough pressure on the fielders closing down the singles.
03:45It was easy batting for the Australians.
03:48And lastly, I felt the batting has been pathetic.
03:52I mean, this is not such a bad pitch.
03:55You've just got to get a start.
03:57I mean, just over 260 runs in the first innings when you've won the toss.
04:02Nice hot sunshine.
04:04You've got the best part of the pitch to bat on.
04:07It was pathetic, 260.
04:09And what do you say about a team now that's 9 for just over 100?
04:14Well, there's nothing you can say.
04:16There's no redeeming feature at all.
04:18They have played badly themselves.
04:21Regardless of the fact that Australia have played well,
04:24Pakistan have played very, very poor, even badly at times.
04:31Well then, like you know, expressing your views very frankly.
04:36What do you think is the difference then between the approach by the Pakistan team and the Australian team?
04:43One difference that makes that difference.
04:48Mental toughness.
04:50They're attuned, they are so focused on not only the game but on situations.
04:58They are good at getting themselves out of difficult situations.
05:03And they are then good at putting the opposition in difficult situations.
05:09That's the nature of a very good professional team.
05:12Who are so mentally strong that when they get the upper hand, they don't let you up.
05:18Australia were 28 for three.
05:21Yeah.
05:22And they got out of jail, didn't they?
05:24Two superb hundreds, 98 by Lehman.
05:27And they do just the same to England, to New Zealand, to West Indies, to anybody.
05:32It isn't just Pakistan.
05:33They are good at once they're on top.
05:35They work hard to get on top.
05:37But once they're on top, they are mentally so strong, they go for the killer punch.
05:43And I take my hat off to them.
05:45I applaud them.
05:46I have great respect for them.
05:48I have great admiration for the cricket.
05:50They play hard.
05:51They play tough.
05:53They try to be fair.
05:54But their object is win.
05:56And your players could learn a lot from them.
05:59Nothing to do with ability.
06:01I've said before, you've got plenty of ability.
06:04But it's about thinking.
06:06Thinking your way around different situations.
06:09Learning to think about your cricket.
06:11Play on different pitches.
06:13Play out of difficult situations.
06:15It's not enough to be able to bat and bowl well.
06:18Let's talk about heel.
06:20World record today.
06:22A fine 82 also in the first inning.
06:25Out of blow.
06:26He's a very good cricketer.
06:28I think the best wicketkeeper batsman I've seen and played with was Alan Knott.
06:34This lad, Ian Healy, is on the same standards.
06:37I think the fact that he's got a lot of dismissal, to some degree,
06:42that's because he's kept wicket to a lot of quality bowlers.
06:47That the edges have come his way.
06:49But I judge him on the fact that he drops very few.
06:53You can't catch them unless they come your way.
06:56You can't stump anybody unless the bowler draws the batsman out of his crease.
07:00But the crux of the matter is, he misses very little.
07:04That is how I judge him.
07:05That's how I judge Alan Knott.
07:07You could count on one hand in a couple of years how many mistakes they made.
07:12Their mistakes are so few.
07:14Healy is a quality performer, a class performer.
07:18I'm very pleased for the lad.
07:20Well Jeffrey, thank you very much for being with us.
07:22And I hope to see you soon.
07:25Thank you very much.
07:26The views expressed by Jeffrey, the views of Jeffrey's alone.
07:31Two tests to go.
07:33Don't worry.
07:34We'll come back.
07:35We'll fight.
07:36Three, four, four.
07:43Welcome to the Royal Pindy Cricket Stadium.
07:46On the fourth day of the first test match being paid here between Australia and Pakistan.
07:51It's a great opportunity for them.
07:53First chance to win in 38 years in Pakistan.
07:56Nice day for bowling because it's cool.
07:59The pitch hasn't changed much.
08:01Maybe a few footholds to work on, but not a lot.
08:04If you look at the footholds, I've seen worse than that.
08:07So there's a little bit...
