Those "What If...?" changes that would make Star Wars that little bit better.
Transcript
00:00As evidenced in a rather brilliant Star Wars Reddit thread discussing what a bunch of Jedi and Sith lovers would do
00:07if they had unlimited power for a day, and could change anything within the current canon,
00:13it's clear that there's a whole lot of alterations that would instantly enhance an already beloved saga.
00:19So with all that in mind, let's fire up the old hyperdrive and blast into an alternate galaxy far, far away.
00:26Where little green legends didn't choose to do one hilariously odd thing, and awful tunes were never introduced.
00:34Because I'm Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 9 canon changes that would make Star Wars instantly better.
00:41Number 9, Leave the Midichlorians Out of It
00:44Despite only appearing in one episode, and briefly showing up in the likes of The Clone Wars and Obi-Wan Kenobi,
00:50Liam Neeson's Qui-Gon Jinn has gone down in history as one of the most beloved Jedi of the lot.
00:56One thing some fans will never forgive him for though, is his part in introducing them to the mind-numbing concepts of midichlorians.
01:04By taking this mysterious power the Jedi and Sith could wield after committing themselves to learning the ways of the Force,
01:11and turning it into a measurable ability that can be analysed before proceeding to train an individual,
01:17it's safe to say a bit of the magic and fun was lost.
01:20And it's not like midichlorians were frequently mentioned in the time after Jinn explained to young Anakin Skywalker,
01:27that they were microscopic lifeforms living in their cells that tell them the will of the Force anyway.
01:32Having the franchise maintain the mystery of exactly what the Force was,
01:36and simply giving Jedi and Sith the ability to sense great potential within an individual through it,
01:41would definitely have made for a more interesting choice than the dull explanation that tumbled out of poor Jinn's mouth.
01:48Number 8. Yoda doesn't use his lightsaber.
01:51Love or love not.
01:53There is no in-between when it comes to the visual of Master Yoda flipping around with his little green blade of doom.
01:59And even if you are a big ol' fan of the powerful Jedi roaring and grunting his way through duels with Count Dooku and Darth Sidious,
02:06it's still hard to deny that a galaxy where Yoda didn't ever choose to wield a tiny lightsaber would have been fascinating.
02:14A Force user so bloody powerful, he didn't even need to resort to pulling out a pitiful laser sword.
02:20Instead, whenever Yoda found himself in a spot of bother,
02:23he could simply disarm and or pulverise his adversaries through the Force,
02:28always staying multiple steps ahead of whatever foe that stood in front of him,
02:32rather than relying on a tool to get himself out of trouble.
02:35Seeing Yoda and Sidious both leaving the lightsaber dueling to their less powerful allies would have also been a delight,
02:42with the two iconic Masters unleashing hell on one another via nothing but the power of the Force.
02:48Sidious launching half the Galactic Senate Chamber at his little green adversary was fantastic in Episode 3,
02:54so more of that and less of the surreal blade battles would have turned an already good fight into a classic.
03:00Now I've got a question for you, what's your favourite lightsaber design?
03:04Is it Yoda's, Sidious's or somebody else's?
03:07Well let me know in the comments section right down below my friends.
03:10Number 7, Padme lives long enough for Leia to remember her.
03:14One of the weirder moments that pop up during the original trilogy during a rewatch,
03:18comes during Leia Organa's conversation with Luke Skywalker,
03:22as the latter explains that the two are actually siblings.
03:25According to the princess, she actually remembered her mother,
03:29and would even tell her brother that she was very beautiful, kind but sad.
03:33The line worked fine back in 1983,
03:36but with it eventually being revealed that Padme Amidala died in childbirth during Revenge of the Sith,
03:41the dialogue now feels a little bizarre and sticks out as a rather odd plot hole.
03:46But had Padme actually been able to survive the birth of her twins,
03:50and simply decided it was too risky to keep both kids on the same planet,
03:54then perhaps there could have been a version of the story where Amidala was able to secretly raise Leia on Alderaan for a few years,
04:00and even continue to aid the Rebellion in hiding while Luke was raised on Tatooine.
04:06Vader would have no doubt gotten wind of her survival in the end of course,
04:09and perhaps his need for her to join him could have even led to her eventual demise at the hands of an incensed fallen Anakin if Amidala refused.
04:18Padme not ridiculously dying of a broken heart would have not only filled in a jarring plot hole,
04:24it would have likely led to an even more impactful end for this underutilized freedom fighter.
04:296. If he did somehow survive, the Emperor being alive is hinted at long before Episode 9.
04:35There will be those out there who would be quick to rip Episode 9's strange mega return right out of canon altogether if they had the chance.
04:43And you can't exactly blame them.
04:45The way Emperor Palpatine's eventual comeback was handled was just plain lazy,
04:49with J.J. Abrams and co. simply telling fans out of the gate that the dead speak,
04:54before trying to justify Sidious' return by noting how he'd actually been pulling the strings from the shadows for years all along.
05:02You know, after transferring his spirit into a cloned version of himself, as you do.
05:07Those developments actually wouldn't have been anywhere near as jarring
05:10had there been a few hints and teases at Palpatine still being a force in the galaxy
05:15throughout the prior two sequel episodes though.
05:18Something as simple as hinting at Supreme Leader Snoke being manipulated by or answering to a dark force from afar,
05:26or maybe even having Palpatine's voice pop up inside Kylo Ren's head.
05:30In the wake of cutting down, the Strangcast in Episode 8 would have worked a treat.
05:35Even the smallest of suggestions that the prior six films Big Bad had found a way to cheat death
05:41in the almost five hours of screen time that preceded Episode 9,
05:44would have made his re-emergence feel like it wasn't just randomly thrown in
05:48as an attempt to make even more dollar off of excessive nostalgia.
05:51Number 5, Find a way to add Ahsoka Tano into Episode 3
05:56Now sure, it would have been absolutely impossible to chuck Anakin Skywalker's iconic Padawan
06:01into the mayhem scene going down in Episode 3 back in 2005.
06:06Mostly due to the fact Ahsoka Tano didn't debut until 2008 during the Clone Wars animated movie.
06:13However, over the years, George Lucas hasn't exactly been afraid of adding a few figures
06:17into the background of his various Star Wars flicks.
06:20So would it really be that difficult to find a way to inject some much-needed Tano
06:24into the climax of the prequel trilogy, even for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo
06:28as Order 66 begins to unfold?
06:30The Clone Wars animated series does a superb job of filling in exactly what she was getting up to
06:36at the time of the final days of the war,
06:38with Tano helping to take down Maul on Mandalore after leaving the Order behind.
06:43But the fact she's then not even mentioned on screen during the fall of her master
06:47in that all-important Episode 3, after being such a huge influence on Anakin's life
06:52in their days of fighting the Separatists, will always feel odd when re-watching that final prequel.
06:58Number 4, Get Rid of Jedi Rocks
07:00There's nothing wrong with a little silliness in the galaxy far, far away.
07:04However, you can have too much of a good-slash-dumb thing.
07:07And that very much became clear when George Lucas decided to swap out a certain Jabba the Hutt's palace tune
07:13for whatever the hell Jedi Rocks was.
07:16On top of the In Your Face song itself being all kinds of bad,
07:20the dodgy CGI used to bring to life Joe Yoza's silly howls,
07:24and Cy Snootles' attempts to entertain the mighty space slug,
07:28quickly cemented this alteration as one of the worst in Star Wars history.
07:32But the way to salvage this excruciating moment of jizz, the style of Star Wars music on show,
07:37you dirty souls, is simple, my friends.
07:40Just bring back the lapsy-neck banger that was present in the scene
07:43before that unwanted 1997 Jedi Rocks debut.
07:48Seeing a slightly clunky animatronic version of Snootles wobble her way through this funky tune
07:53is a surreal blast, and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb in the way her CGI counterpart eventually did,
07:59when placed in front of the rest of the non-digital Max Rebo band.
08:03This enjoyable moment of musical fun wasn't broken, folks,
08:07so in this alternate canon, Lucas' CGI meddling wouldn't have affected this particular piece of jizz.
08:13Number 3, Anakin Skywalker Speaks to Kylo Ren in the Sequels
08:17Similarly to Ahsoka Tano's absence in the prequels feeling quite strange
08:21in the wake of eventually learning just how significant a part she played in the Clone Wars,
08:26the lack of major appearance from her fallen master in the sequels was also a bit odd.
08:31Throughout the trilogy, Kylo Ren had obsessed over his grandfather,
08:35and dedicated himself to finishing what he started.
08:38But rather than playing a big role in eventually nudging the troubled Ben Solo back towards the light,
08:44it's the Force user's own father who decides to appear in front of him on Kef Beer.
08:48It was sweet to see Han Solo pop back up as a vision-slash-memory in front of his boy,
08:53and be the person who helped bring Ben back from the darkness.
08:57But having Anakin in that position instead,
08:59or even showing up moments before Solo's memory appears as a Force ghost,
09:03would have been unquestionably powerful.
09:06After spending so much of his life idolising the Sith Lord Anakin would eventually become,
09:10hearing from a redeemed one-time Vader that there was still good in him,
09:14and time for Solo to make up for his mistakes,
09:17could have turned a heartwarming sequence into an even more moving Skywalker saga moment.
09:22And seeing Hayden Christensen back on the big screen as Skywalker is always a bonus too.
09:27Number 2, Keep Rey as a Nobody
09:29Along with the Emperor somehow returning,
09:32another revelation very much split the franchise in Episode 9.
09:36After it was sensationally noted in The Last Jedi that Rey wasn't actually related to any of the galaxy's most famous Force users,
09:43and was little more than a nobody who was incredibly strong with the Force,
09:47JJ Abrams and the gang came along and decided,
09:50nah, let's just make her Palpatine's granddaughter instead.
09:53It was a baffling call back in 2019,
09:55and it has aged like a pint of blue milk in the years since.
09:59Making Rey just your average Jane,
10:01who remarkably ended up being one of the most important and powerful people in this universe,
10:05was a bold and admirable move.
10:08It told viewers that anyone could make a difference,
10:10and find it in them to become the hero of the story.
10:13And sticking with that idea instead of having her strangely be revealed as a Palpatine all along,
10:19wouldn't have just been a more inspiring message to throw out into the world.
10:23It would have also kept the galaxy from feeling so much smaller by the time the Rise of Skywalker reached its underwhelming end.
10:30Number 1, A Stormtrooper Rebellion
10:32Now here's a change that none other than Finn himself would make if he was given the opportunity to slightly alter Star Wars canon.
10:39As John Boyega would explain when talking to Vanity Fair about what he'd change about the story told in the films he was involved in,
10:46a Stormtrooper Rebellion is something he certainly feels should have been a part of the sequel trilogy.
10:52Oh, and he also thought Luke Skywalker deserved more moments of redemption after Episode 8.
10:57But when it comes to that other Stormtrooper idea,
11:00Boyega would eventually note to Yahoo how he felt original Episode 9 director Colin Trevorrow
11:05was going to tell the story of Finn leading a bunch of reformed troopers into battle against the First Order on Coruscant,
11:12referring to early concept art that eventually dropped online,
11:16showing his one-time Stormtrooper waving the blue flag of rebellion alongside the likes of Poe and Rose.
11:21Getting to watch Finn bring his time in the Skywalker saga to an end,
11:25as a person who helped inspire and lead a group of one-time Stormtroopers in a fight for the galaxy,
11:30against the dark forces that had kidnapped them as children would have been undoubtedly awesome.
11:36Though anything would have been better than the way the character was depressingly nudged to one side,
11:40during the rather disappointing end to this 9 movie tale.
11:44And that's our list, no many other canon changes that would make Star Wars instantly better.
