00:00So we have with us Shreya Krishnan, India head at Anita B. Org, is a dynamic leader, driving inclusion and representation for women and non-binary technologists across the country.
00:10Her work champions equity, community building and transformative opportunities in technology.
00:15Welcome to our channel, ma'am.
00:17Thank you so much. It's good to be here.
00:19So first I'd like to know what's the core vision behind Grace Hopper Celebration India 25 and what do you hope participants,
00:26especially women early in their tech careers, take away from this addition?
00:31I think for us Unbound is the theme this year and that's very close to my heart because we're always trying to live up to somebody else's expectations.
00:39We're always trying to live up to what society thinks success is.
00:42But have we really heard our inner voice and have we really asked ourselves what do we really want?
00:47What is our dream? What is something we want to chase?
00:50And I think in constantly seeking something from the outside, we're forgetting who we are in the inside.
00:56So I think my message to everybody young who's looking out to start off in a career, remember that your career will stay with you.
01:03Remember that it will fuel you and that it's your purpose and that when you have a career that you're loving and you're invested in,
01:11then you'll automatically grow so much as all of the other roles in your world and in your life.
01:17Right. Well said. So beautifully you have described this thing.
01:20So as AI rapidly transforms workplaces, what steps should organizations take to ensure that women
01:27and underrepresented groups are not left behind in AI readiness, skilling and leadership opportunities?
01:35I think AI is all about participation.
01:37The data that machines are learning from right now is already problematic because there's so many biases in the system.
01:42So AI is a reflection of what we already have in the world, right?
01:47And all of that data is primarily, you know, flawed because it tells you certain things that are problematic within the society
01:56and now moving whether it's race, whether it's culture, whether it's caste, whether it's bias.
02:01AI has started imbibing these and there are enough black box examples that will tell you
02:05how AI tends to not be entirely ethical in its behavior and that's because of data sets.
02:11So I think it's very important to one, participate in the language of AI because AI representation of women is very low.
02:17It's in the 30 percent. So we need to increase that participation.
02:21So the AI that's being built for this world starts speaking and behaving like the world and not like one segment of the world.
02:26So I think it's very important to participate in the building of it.
02:29It's important to create data sets that are neutral so that you can really create grassroot level change.
02:34Right, right. So how can we build AI systems from data to deployment that are not only innovation
02:41but also inclusive, ethical and free from gender bias and what role can platform like GHCI play in driving this shift?
02:51I think the first thing is data and awareness, right?
02:53There are so many times that AI models have hired more men than women despite having gender blind resumes
02:59where AI doesn't know who the gender of the person applying is. And that's because AI is very smart.
03:04It's learned to find that women write their resumes differently from men.
03:08So it starts discriminating at that level. So you're not just at the surface level, but it's about really going deeper
03:13and having the awareness to identify what those problems could be.
03:18And I keep repeating this. You can never have responsible or ethical AI.
03:21You can have responsible and ethical people working with AI, building AI, creating AI, crafting AI.
03:27And I think that's a reminder to all of us. It's a tool that you hold and you wield, right?
03:33You can't put the, you can't tell the knife that you have to be accountable for whether you're chopping vegetables
03:38or taking a life, right? The knife is in your hands. The accountability is yours.
03:43So who are the people wielding this power? And I think that's a very important question to ask.
03:47And if you're not one of those people, make sure you have a seat at the table.
03:50If you don't have one, drag a chair, sit down, join the table and say, I'm here to be heard.
03:56Right. That's so wonderful. Thank you so much for this insightful conversation.
