00:00I kept asking him the whole time what was going to happen and, of course, because he's very good and very professional, he wouldn't tell me because he probably knew I was going to spoil it at some point.
00:06I'm lucky, you know, it's one of those things where you just never know how something is going to go, right?
00:11We never do anything like kind of normal for Fallout.
00:14Two massive shows, huge audiences, people absolutely loving it, getting to see different sides of you, a lot of screaming on screen.
00:20A lot of screaming on screen.
00:22A lot of fake blood.
00:23A lot of fake blood.
00:24I need a break from the fake blood.
00:26There's a little break.
00:27Really?
00:27Well, good luck.
00:28I think they've already ordered another series of this, haven't they?
00:30Yeah, yeah, they have.
00:32Talk me through kind of reactions from your perspective for the first series.
00:38You're trying to create a new audience, also keep a lot of gaming fans happy.
00:42They can be pretty picky, as they've proved over the years.
00:45But you seem to have hit the right note on this.
00:47People love it on both sides of the divide.
00:50I mean, I can't.
00:51That's so lovely to say all those things.
00:53I can't take any credit for it.
00:55I can only...
00:57I mean, you're in it.
00:57I am in it, yeah.
00:59If the main character in the show was rubbish, I don't think they'd be like, oh, well, it looks lovely, though.
01:05Well, that's very kind of you.
01:06I love this show, and I love playing this character, and I find her very courageous and really admirable, and, you know, she's an imperfect person.
01:15She has her flaws, but she's fun to play, you know.
01:17She's got some of the best lines I've ever said.
01:20But it's also getting to work with Walton and Aaron and how incredible our writers are and how much they all love the show and how much they're all, you know, trying to do justice to this incredible show that's been around for so many years.
01:31You know, I'm just, I'm glad some people like it, and I just feel really lucky to be a part of it, to be honest.
01:36And a different era for her this side, because the first series, you see her kind of emerging from this world.
01:42It's all she ever known, and she's kind of having to change every day just to survive.
01:46Now, I guess, are we going to see a kind of maybe a bolder, self-assured version of Lucy?
01:52Yeah, I think she's finding her feet.
01:54I think that she's, listen, we pick up with Lucy season two, not far off where we left off season one, and she's on this sort of road trip with the ghoul.
02:05And they're getting on each other's nerves, because they're so different, and they're also very similar in ways that they don't want to admit to themselves, they don't want to admit to each other.
02:13They're very stubborn, you know, and Lucy just wants them to be a better person, and he just doesn't care, and wants to just find the father.
02:22Finally, on that relationship, what's it been like spending all this time with Walton Goggins this last 12 months?
02:26Because he's gone through this kind of, this period of his career where all the lights are shining on him suddenly.
02:33At one time, it feels like all these kind of chickens have come home to roots.
02:36Everyone's been applauding this guy.
02:38I've never heard that expression before.
02:40I like that.
02:40It's been around.
02:41I'll bring it back.
02:41No, I like that.
02:42I'll mention in every other interview.
02:44Yeah.
02:44I'm sure people will start talking about it.
02:44No, no, no, we'll bring it back.
02:45It's going to go viral.
02:46So what's it been like being around that kind of energy, seeing him kind of have to deal with the spotlight, the world's spotlight in that way?
02:52Well, it's funny.
02:53So he was shooting, I think he was shooting White Lotus when we were doing press for season one, and I love White Lotus season one and two.
03:01So I kept asking him the whole time what was going to happen, and of course, because he's very good and very professional, he wouldn't tell me, because he probably knew I was going to spoil it at some point.
03:08So I'm just happy for him.
03:09Yeah, I'm really happy for him.
03:11I also really enjoyed White Lotus season three.
03:13So it's like, yeah, I feel very, I don't know, I feel really excited that we're on this journey together.
03:18Mr. Goggins, great to see you.
03:21Great to see you.
03:22And might I say, congratulations from one of the most, one of the all-time years.
03:27I mean, you've been everywhere, every role.
03:30People have been lording you with praise.
03:33How does it feel?
03:33How does it feel to be in your shoes this year, man?
03:36I'm just playing it as it lays and just so grateful for every opportunity that's come my way.
03:42You've been doing this game for a long time.
03:45You've low-key stolen scenes across so many great movies and great shows over the years.
03:50But is there a feeling almost of like chickens coming home to roost?
03:54Like every now and again, in an actor's life, it feels like the light shines on them and everyone goes, look how good this person is.
04:00And it kind of feels like that light has been on you.
04:03I don't know what that, if you have a different sense of it.
04:05Gratitude, really.
04:07I mean, I've had a lot of moments over the course of my life, as a lot of friends of mine that are wonderful actors.
04:16And then they have a moment.
04:19But they've been having moments their entire career.
04:22Sometimes it's a little bit brighter than others.
04:25And I'm just grateful for whatever it is that I'm going through, knowing that everything will ebb, that's flowing.
04:32And I've been happy all along the way.
04:36So I'm just making the most of the opportunities that are in front of me and showing up with everything I have to offer.
04:43Well, congrats, man.
04:44It's been great to see you.
04:44Thanks, man.
04:45I really appreciate you saying that.
04:46No worries, man.
04:46Lovely to meet you.
04:47A quick word on the thing in front of you right now.
04:49It's season two of Fallout.
04:51You must have been, you never really know if the secret sauce is in a show.
04:55If it went, say it again?
04:56You never really know when you're making a show if it has that secret sauce where it's going to capture imagination of the core audience and everyone else.
05:02People love this.
05:03I hadn't seen it when I was on the carpet with you guys last year.
05:06I watched that entire series.
05:08I thought it was brilliant.
05:09And I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your character because it feels like there's this duality.
05:14How much fun has it been to play these two guys in different parts of the line?
05:17Here's what I will say.
05:18Having been in this situation, luckily, a number of times over the course of my career, if you're able to build a critical mass in season one of chapter one of a story, right, not season one of a television show, I don't look at it that way.
05:34But if you're able to build a critical mass and you have one of two opportunities, in my mind, you can play it safe and rest on the laurels of what kind of came before,
05:43or you can just go for broke and put it all out there.
05:48And everybody in front of and behind that camera went for broke.
05:52And we gave it everything that we had.
05:54And whether you like it or whether you don't like it, you can bet that we showed up every day and gave it the best we had.
06:00And I'm really proud of it.
06:02And I hope people like it as watching it as much as we did making it.
06:06This time last year, we met on the fallout carpet.
06:08I was far too excited to explain because I'm such a big fan of Twin Peaks.
06:11So I just want to say my condolences, sir, to a lot of your close friends.
06:15Oh, bless your heart.
06:15Thank you very much.
06:16Yeah, David Lynch is a dear, dear friend.
06:18His loss is a big deal.
06:20But it must have been good to see the kind of the outpouring of love and respect and adoration that's been shown towards him and his work and the work that you guys have done together over this last year.
06:31Yeah, it was really nice to see.
06:34I think I know it would have meant a lot to David as well.
06:38So thank you for that.
06:39No problem.
06:39And I'm talking about leaving an impact like such as he did.
06:43Fallout Season 1, people are loving this show.
06:46I'm loving this show.
06:47Oh, nice.
06:48When I was on the carpet last year, I hadn't seen an episode yet.
06:51I hadn't played the game, but I thought, oh, the cast is good.
06:53We'll see what happens.
06:54I destroyed that series.
06:55I watched every episode.
06:56I'm so happy to hear that.
06:58Do you, when you're making a show like that, like, do you sense that secret sauce anymore?
07:03I mean, you've been part of some huge successes over the years.
07:06I'm lucky.
07:06You know, it's one of those things where you just never know how something is going to go, right?
07:10We had brilliant people, you know, behind the scenes producing, writing, creating, working on this.
07:17And I'm just lucky to be part of this.
07:19It's a wonderful cast of people.
07:21We really get along.
07:22We love each other.
07:22And they just, they created something really amazing, you know.
07:27And so, you know, that doesn't happen all the time.
07:28So, yeah, I'm very lucky.
07:30Filled with gratitude.
07:32I'm filled with gratitude as well because we get to watch it.
07:35Let's talk Hank for a second.
07:36And how could you, sir, betraying your own daughter, betraying your own, your own kin?
07:43I'm very, very suspicious.
07:44I'm sus, as the kids say.
07:46Yeah, sus.
07:46Yeah, well done.
07:47Yes, yes.
07:48You know, Hank is one of those complex characters that's just full of all sorts of opposites, you know,
07:55which I love playing in particular.
07:57I sort of cut my teeth on that.
07:58So, he's still the loving father to his daughter.
08:01He's still the charismatic leader of Vault 33.
08:05But in Season 2, we get to see sort of Hank the Scientist, Hank the Inventor, Hank the Visionary.
08:10He's got an idea and he's a dreamer, you know.
08:12So, it was really fun to be able to step into those shoes for a while.
08:15Me and my partner had a baby in the last year.
08:18Congratulations.
08:18And while she was, thank you very much, I've not slept in a long time.
08:20You named him Hank or her.
08:21We named him, yeah, we named him Kyle McLaughlin.
08:23Kyle McLaughlin.
08:24And while she was pregnant, we watched all of Desperate Housewives again.
08:28And your character in that is so delicious because he's very likable and then also, like, has this bite to him and this kind of passion.
08:34He doesn't know how to deal with his own emotions.
08:36Hank seems a lot more calculating.
08:37Is that more fun to play in a way?
08:40Because he's kind of like almost a new character.
08:42Yeah, yeah.
08:43It's all about what you hide, what you don't see, what you don't show, you know.
08:48But it's also the side of Hank that people, I think, came to initially in love.
08:54He's still true.
08:54It's still who he is.
08:55And I think that adds to the sort of the audience isn't quite sure how to respond.
09:00Just as Lucy, who plays Ella, who plays my daughter, she's not quite sure how to respond to Hank for what he's done.
09:06I mean, she recognizes it as something horrible and heinous.
09:09But at the same time, I'm her dad, you know.
09:13So she makes an effort to try to understand why I've done the things that I've done.
09:17And therein lies the interesting kind of back and forth between the two of us.
09:22Of course.
09:22There's something about you that you says.
09:24There's something underneath there.
09:25We don't know what it is.
09:26But the sheen is very lightable on the outside.
09:28I'm just a regular, innocent fella.
09:29What the hell?
09:30What else can you tell us about season two then?
09:32Season three is already on its way.
09:34Yeah, they bought two, three.
09:35Yeah, I think they've just started to think about that.
09:39So bigger, louder, more explosive, more gory.
09:42We'll see.
09:42I don't know what's up.
09:44I do know one thing, that they'll take their time and they'll create something really wonderful.
09:47They're very serious about it.
09:49They go in with great intentions.
09:50And I'm sure they're going to write characters that continue their journey in an interesting way.
09:57Well, hopefully you'll be along for the ride.
09:58Hopefully I will be.
09:59I'll be crossing my fingers for your survival.
10:02I bless your heart.
10:03Thank you so much.
10:03A pleasure.
10:04Great to see you, mate.
10:04Really nice to see you again.
10:05Congratulations on the young one.
10:06Thank you very much.
10:07I hope he sleeps through the night one of these days.
10:09Or I'm going to kill myself.
10:10You'll get there.
10:11Yeah, eventually.
10:12Eventually.
10:12Been there and know what you mean.
10:14You good?
10:14It's good, yeah.
10:15Johnny, Johnny.
10:15We met last year.
10:16We were all free.
10:17Stop.
10:17That's what I was thinking.
10:18We were freezing cold in that little, like, it was pretty cool, like that bunker they built.
10:22Oh my God.
10:23We never do anything like kind of normal for Fallout, do we?
10:27Yeah, exactly.
10:27Do we?
10:28Exactly.
10:28I got here today and they're like, yeah, just walk through the fridge.
10:30I'm like, I'm just not walking through the fridge.
10:32Yeah.
10:32You're going to go into the fridge.
10:34It's nice to get out of the house.
10:35I love it, yeah.
10:36Aaron, good to see you, pal.
10:37You too.
10:38Talk me through the last 12 months of yours.
10:40I mean, when you get a gig to do this huge show, you know it's going to be massive, huge audience out there for the games, huge big sets, lots of money spent on it.
10:47You make it.
10:49You just wait.
10:49And then it comes out.
10:52Yeah, it's like finally the time to share it, right?
10:55Yeah.
10:55So, like, what's the last 12 months been?
10:56Because people are loving this show.
10:58I know.
10:58It actually has been really wonderful.
11:00I mean, I've spent a lot of time with some of the, you know, fans of the video game going to different events and installations around the world over the last 12 months.
11:09And usually what it is is people ask me to ruin the story for them.
11:12You know what I mean?
11:13It's usually like, what's going to happen?
11:14I'm like, there's like three major corporations that will come after me if I tell you.
11:18But, no, it's really wonderful to see how, I don't know, we feel like it's just so lucky to be just a part of this big community of Fallout.
11:26And also bringing in a new audience.
11:28You know, I'm new to the game.
11:31You know what I mean?
11:31It's new to me and it's something that I would have loved.
11:35I was just off playing Diablo when this thing was coming out on PC.
11:39I love Diablo.
11:40I had that on like, I think I had like a PlayStation, like original PlayStation version of that.
11:45That I used to play with my mate Steve.
11:46What a game that was.
11:48Hopefully that gets a movie or TV show that does that credit as well.
11:50That one was pretty time consuming as well.
11:52Yeah, yeah, it is.
11:53I'm a dad now, so I've got no time for any of these things.
11:55But I have seen this series and it's an absolute banger, mate.
11:57Okay.
11:58Which is British for...
11:59Thank you for saying that.
12:00Yeah.
12:02Already season two here, season three on the way.
12:06You must have a bit of a road map right in front of you now.
12:09Where are we going with this show?
12:10What can we expect?
12:12Is Maximus going to kind of strap on a pair over the time of the next series?
12:17Definitely.
12:18No, he...
12:19I don't know.
12:20We're really...
12:22We're asking the right questions, I think.
12:23I think we're trying to reinvent the hero a little bit, you know?
12:28Like, let's re-imagine these words, too.
12:31Brave, you know, strength.
12:33Let's talk about him, you know what I mean?
12:35I think that's what we're doing with Maximus.
12:37And I don't know, at least I can tell you that we're always going to have him try and exist in this hyper-realistic place.
12:43And I love that.
12:44It's what brings me to work.
12:45And especially with the sets we get to walk onto, it just makes the imaginative work so much more fun.
12:52Well, I'm rooting for him, man.
12:54I'm rooting for you.
12:54No, thank you, bro.
12:55Yeah.
12:55And I'm looking forward to where we go with the show.
12:57Congratulations, man.
12:59I'll see you in 12 months' time.
13:00After another banger.
13:01Another banger?
13:02We'll do it again.
13:03We'll do it again.
13:03Okay, let's cut straight to the chase.
13:06Did you do it?
13:07Did Maximus screw you over last season?
13:09Are we going to see some retribution of that?
13:11Or are we still meant to have our faith in this guy?
13:14How's Dane at the start of season two?
13:17Dane at the start of season two is wiser.
13:21Wiser.
13:22And maybe a little less scared.
13:25Okay.
13:26I'm going to take wiser as a slight hint at what may come.
13:30You can take whatever hints you want.
13:32Let's talk about the show then.
13:34It's had such great feedback over the last year.
13:36We see kind of commute games turn into movies and shows every other year seemingly.
13:41But you never know what you're going to get.
13:42This one, the fans of the game and fans of just good TV have all taken to it.
13:48What's that been like for you guys?
13:49Oh, it's magical.
13:50You know, you always hope that a labour of love gets rewarded by being loved by the fans as well.
13:55So it's always lovely to have our work rewarded like that.
14:01A lot of heart was put into the show.
14:03From the top all the way down to the bottom, every single person involved is giving their all.
14:09And so it's really nice to see that every element of the production has been appreciated by fans.
14:14Both of the games and new fans.
14:15Speaking of fans, how's the socials been?
14:18Are people like sliding into DMs going,
14:20OK, so actually this character in this game did this and are you going to do that or has it been?
14:25No, I haven't had that experience.
14:27I think people are just thrilled to be able to see the game they love being explored in different ways.
14:32And that world in greater depth and greater depth, greater breadth.
14:38I suppose part of the first season would have been a bit of a shock to the system to see the scale of the sets being built and the scope of a show like this.
14:47What's it been like coming back to season two?
14:50Do you feel like you've gotten your stride or is it still a bit awe-inspiring?
14:53I mean, I played the games, so for me it's awe-inspiring every time I step onto a set and see something that I recognise from my computer.
15:01But no, I think there's more of a familiarity with it.
15:04I certainly, I think we'd be hard-pressed to top some of the locations in set building that there is this season.
15:14And I'm sure there were jaws on the floor for a lot of them.
15:18And there will be from fans too.
15:19I think someone would have to take the hat off to the cast that's in this show.
15:24Some of the performances in last season, just the kind of people you guys have got on there.
15:28Dane was kind of held in an area in season one.
15:33Do we get to see you kind of spread your legs a little bit this time and get out and about?
15:39I think, I mean, Dane certainly does some walking this time around.
15:45But I think you get to see a little bit of a different side to Dane.
15:53An expansion of some of the things we saw in season one.
15:58And maybe some areas where they lack growth.
16:03Okay, interesting.
16:04Well, I'm looking forward to it.
16:06I absolutely demolished the first season.
16:09So I can't wait to get into this.
