Star Wars The Last Jedi is peeling back the curtain on the upcoming movie.
00:07
In a new Vanity Fair cover story, director Rian Johnson, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy
00:12
and the film's stars opened up about the sequel. Four different beautiful cover photos
00:16
were also shot for the story. Here are a few things we learned from the piece,
00:20
which comes one day before the 40th anniversary of Star Wars hitting theaters in 1977.
00:25
First, one might guess from the trailer that Luke, played by Mark Hamill and Rey,
00:29
a.k.a. Daisy Ridley, spend a sizable amount of time training, akin to Yoda and Luke
00:34
in Empire Strikes Back. But Johnson said the Luke-Rey relationship is not totally analogous
00:39
to the Luke-Yoda relationship. We also now know who the new characters are, sort of.
00:44
At Star Wars Celebration in April, The Last Jedi team revealed that Kelly Marie Tran's character
00:48
was a maintenance worker named Rose, who has a key role in the film. The Vanity Fair story
00:53
reveals Rose's sister Paige, played by Veronica Noe, will appear in the film and that Laura Dern's
00:58
character is Vice Admiral Holdo. Benicio del Toro's mystery character will not be named in
01:03
Last Jedi, but the filmmakers called him DJ. Plus, we will see the galaxy's wealthy side
01:08
in Last Jedi. Rose and Finn, played by John Boyega, will travel to a casino city called
01:13
Canto Bight, which Johnson described as a Star Wars Monte Carlo-type environment.
01:17
A little James Bond-ish, a little to catch a thief. Finally, we learned that Episode 9 would have been
01:22
Carrie Fisher's movie. Following her death, the Lucasfilm team not only mourned, but eventually
01:27
had to plan a future for Star Wars without General Leia. The plan had been for Leia to
01:31
take a larger role in 9, and after wrapping Last Jedi, Fisher said that was her hope, too.
01:36
Kennedy revealed,
01:37
The minute she finished, she grabbed me and said, I'd better be at the forefront of 9. Because
01:41
Harrison Ford was front and center on 7, and Mark is front and center on 8, she thought 9 would
01:46
be her movie. And it would have been.
