00:00we're tracking some breaking news out of hong kong this morning a massive fire has ripped through

00:13a densely populated residential complex for more on this i'm now joined by laura westbrook in hong

00:20kong laura i see the scene behind you there very much an active scene of course because

00:25this is a massive fire what is the latest this morning yeah that's right firefighters are still

00:36trying to get this massive fire under control as you can see at least four of these housing blocks

00:43remain on fire with firefighters using water cannon to try to get the fire under control there are

00:54reports that more blocks are uh are still ablaze there are eight blocks all together in this

01:01housing estate in taipo this is in the northern part of hong kong in uh the new territories and

01:07this fire has been burning for hours uh it's a court uh caught fire earlier this afternoon

01:17um with these uh with these uh these housing blocks uh having uh being renovated and and having bamboo

01:25scaffolding as well as this green mesh with the fire uh spreading across the the bamboo scaffolding

01:33and mesh to spread to numerous uh uh blocks um uh the fire has been raised to a number five alarm this

01:43is the highest alarm in the city as uh firefighters try to get this fire under control now this estate

01:52comprises of about 1900 flats uh home to uh reportedly about 4 000 uh residents and there were reports earlier

02:01of people uh being trapped inside and uh with more uh blocks on fire there are fears of people

02:08being trapped but police have told local media that they haven't been able to do a sweeping

02:14operation and so it does remain unclear if there are people uh still trapped as this fire and rescue

02:22operation continues there are there have also been reports of uh family members who haven't been able

02:30to contact uh uh their loved ones uh the city's uh leader john lee he's put out a statement on social

02:38media saying that he's activated the emergency monitoring and support center to receive reports

02:44and to direct uh rescue work where i'm standing now uh there are dozens of of ambulances as well as fire

02:53engines and people have been standing here uh watching this fire some residents uh also uh watching

03:01the fire uh for for hours and the government has also uh opened some emergency shelters because as this

03:09fire continues into the night uh uh residents are needing a place to go uh as this uh is very much

03:17uh a continuing uh rescue operation here in hong kong thanks so much for this that's laura westbrook

03:24in hong kong and taking another look at the images there outside of those buildings where the fire

03:30continues to burn these images from earlier today but you can see in laura westbrook's live shot there

03:36fire crews remain there on the scene trying to get that fire out of control thousands of units impacted

03:42here it is a deadly fire we're keeping an eye on the death toll how many people might be injured and

03:47possibly still trapped in that building we'll keep an eye on any developments coming out of hong kong
