00:00Dealers like to play around, but the fun and games end when the bidding starts.
00:07In the heart of Edinburgh, sellers of the curious and collectible...
00:12Do you think the dealers will snap it up for a good price?
00:15...will face five dealers with money to burn.
00:17Look into my eyes. You need this.
00:20Like eclectic collector Ian.
00:24Decorative dealer Joe.
00:25Love it!
00:27Mid-century buyer Jackie.
00:28Look at that smile!
00:30Vintage collector JB.
00:32And Belgian art dealer George.
00:35First, auctioneer Simon will value the items to help nail the best sale.
00:40It could be a life-changing amount of money.
00:42So, how will today's lot do?
00:44So they're all working?
00:46Yes.
00:46You'll probably never see another one of those again.
00:48Oh!
00:50Always wanted to do this.
00:53When they enter the bidding room.
00:56Now you know how rare it is, do you want to raise your bid?
00:58Seventy-five.
00:59At two-twenty and bid?
01:01We're getting there.
01:02Any advance?
01:03One-fifty and I'll let you take it.
01:05I'm out.
01:05Well done.
01:06Anyone for tennis?
01:10Simon?
01:12Anyone?
01:13First up are Scott and Claire, with a vintage contraption that could smooth the wheels in the bidding room.
01:33I've brought along an item that had a previous purpose.
01:37It's made of cast iron, wood, and it's deceptively heavy.
01:41It looks really lovely now.
01:43It didn't previously, but now it does.
01:46What would you call it?
01:47We'd call it an industrial trolley.
01:49And what would they push around on it?
01:53Sort of sacks of this and boxes of that.
01:56Covent Garden and pallets of tomatoes and things, but whatever.
02:00Yeah.
02:00Yeah.
02:04Hi there.
02:05Hello, Scott.
02:05Hello, Claire.
02:06Very nice to meet you.
02:08Me too.
02:08Look what you brought in.
02:09Some industrial...
02:10It is, indeed.
02:10..sort of masculine thing.
02:13And I bought a trolley.
02:14What is it?
02:18We think it's a factory trolley, but we're not 100% certain.
02:21Scott found it in a reclamation yard on the side of the road.
02:25In the pouring rain, I just pulled up, said, I'm going to have a look,
02:28and I disappeared like some sort of junkyard ferret into this pile of cast iron.
02:32And you came back with that and you said, what have you...
02:35100% I said, what am I...
02:36That's nearly what she said.
02:37Because it was.
02:39Nearly what she said.
02:39It was soaking wet.
02:40It was covered in mould and algae and rust.
02:43It took about three months to dry it out.
02:45Really?
02:45The wood was literally dripping.
02:47Yeah.
02:48It was going to be a coffee table in our house,
02:50but the beagles thought it was a beagle seat.
02:54So, um...
02:55It's been living there ever since.
02:56I've had to part company with it, really.
02:58Right, OK.
02:59And what did you pay for it, do you mind my asking?
03:01I paid the obscene amount of £30.
03:03£30.
03:05Yeah, good find.
03:06Really, really good find.
03:08I love all the metalwork, the ironwork on it.
03:10It's absolutely gorgeous.
03:11We've got these remnants of what I think, guys,
03:16are kind of like plastic.
03:17Mm.
03:18So, to me, that's going to date this to sort of 1930s, 40s,
03:23that kind of vintage.
03:25Our wheels are each fully marked with the Slingsby stamp,
03:30London and Bradford.
03:31You cleaned them really well.
03:32You did.
03:34But this middle wheel is adjustable, presumably, Nigel,
03:37for turning.
03:38Turning, yeah.
03:38Like a turntable trolley, in effect.
03:40Mm.
03:44Are these good sellers, Simon?
03:47I'd be surprised if you don't do quite well with it.
03:50The way you've brought it back to life, I think,
03:53is really fantastic.
03:54And in its present state,
03:56I think a fair auction estimate would be easily 80 to 120.
04:05But if two people fall in love with it,
04:08it's going to creep on, isn't it?
04:10How do you feel about that?
04:12Yeah, I feel OK about that.
04:14I'm quite happy to try and give them a squeeze.
04:15Yeah, give them a squeeze.
04:16Absolutely.
04:17OK, you two.
04:18Thanks very much for bringing us in and wish you the best of luck.
04:21Thank you very much.
04:22Thank you both for having us.
04:22Bye.
04:23Bye.
04:25But you feel how easy it is to turn?
04:27Oh, it's great, isn't it?
04:28It's great, isn't it?
04:29Yeah.
04:31Yeah.
04:36Simon valued the trolley at 80 to 120 pounds.
04:40I think I'm looking forward to locking horns with them
04:42because that's the fun bit now.
04:44The selling is the fun bit.
04:48Hello.
04:49Hi there.
04:49Hello.
04:50Hello, hello.
04:51Oh, dear.
04:52Welcome to the bidding room.
04:53Thank you very much.
04:54Pleasure to be here.
04:55Pleasure to see you.
04:56What are your names?
04:56I'm Claire.
04:57Claire.
04:57I'm Scott.
04:58Scott.
04:59Hi, Claire.
04:59Hi, Scott.
05:00Nice to meet you both.
05:01Would one of you or both of you like to reveal all, please?
05:04I think that's Scott.
05:05I'll do the honours.
05:06Go on, then.
05:06Excellent.
05:08I've always wanted to do this.
05:09Yay!
05:11Make it a big one.
05:12Yay!
05:13That's nice.
05:14Oh, look at that.
05:15Oh, that's nice.
05:17That's a nice old trolley, isn't it?
05:18Isn't it?
05:19Look at that.
05:20It didn't always look like that.
05:22No.
05:24Where did you guys get it from?
05:26In an industrial reclamation yard.
05:28Oh.
05:29And I'm not even going to tell you what she said
05:30as I put it into the back of the car.
05:32So I'm assuming plenty of elbow grease and dark wax
05:35has gone into that.
05:36And an awful lot of skin knuckles
05:37and a healthy garnish of expletives, yes.
05:41Sounds like our everyday was furnished, doesn't it?
05:44Oh, it is heavy, isn't it?
05:45It's really heavy.
05:46It was obviously designed to carry something spectacularly heavy.
05:51Yeah, hemp.
05:52Belly down.
05:52Let's see how well it works.
05:55Belly down.
05:56You could use it as a vintage flatbed trolley for a car.
05:59Legs up like that.
06:00Oh.
06:01This is actually quite...
06:02It might not go on the car, but it does.
06:04There it goes.
06:04And it works.
06:16Oh, it's good.
06:16Beautiful.
06:17And Daniel.
06:19Oh, my God.
06:21That was amazing.
06:23Wow.
06:24Getting back to the serious business.
06:26Did Simon give any indications of the age of this?
06:30He feels that it's into war.
06:32Into war.
06:33Yeah.
06:34OK, then, guys and girls,
06:35is it time to get some roly-poly bids going?
06:38Yes.
06:40After that little bit of fun,
06:42can Scott and Claire push the dealers past Simon's
06:45£80 to £120 valuation?
06:47Right, I'll kick it off at a mighty £30.
06:55Ooh.
06:56I'll go £40.
06:58£50.
07:01£55.
07:03£60.
07:05£65.
07:06£70.
07:08I'll go £80.
07:10£90.
07:11£100.
07:13£120.
07:14£130, then.
07:16£140.
07:17I'm going to say I'm out of that,
07:20but thank you.
07:22I will join JB,
07:23and I'm out too.
07:25I'm sorry.
07:26I am going to say I am out.
07:30I'm going to be out.
07:31At £140.
07:33How does that sound?
07:35£150, and I'll let you take it.
07:40It's a do.
07:40Yeah.
07:46What did you pay for it?
07:50No, I'm going to...
07:51Right.
07:53I paid £30.
07:55Well done.
07:56But of course, you put all the work in.
07:57Yes.
07:58Yes.
07:58We sold the trolley to Joe,
08:00and the winning bid was £150.
08:02We got an instant positive feedback
08:05the second they saw it,
08:06so that just felt good.
08:08They all really liked it straight away.
08:09As soon as the cloth came off,
08:10they were all like, wow.
08:12So that was really good.
08:19Well, I have to say,
08:20I absolutely adore it.
08:22So thank you both for bringing it in.
08:24It's been a pleasure to meet you.
08:25Thank you very much.
08:26Thank you, everybody.
08:27Bye, everybody.
08:32Oh, you're ready, Ian.
08:34Yes!
08:34Next in are Craig and Nicky
08:58with a distinctive item
09:00that could send prices sky high.
09:02The item we've brought in today
09:04is, well, it's unusual.
09:07It's something you can wear.
09:09We've only managed to find one other one,
09:12and we've got one of the rarest times.
09:15I don't know anything about this at all.
09:18It's a serious bit of kit in its day.
09:21Right, OK.
09:22Something to do with flying, no doubt.
09:23Yeah.
09:26There you come.
09:28Craig and Nicky,
09:29welcome to the bidding room.
09:30Thank you for having us.
09:31Absolute pleasure.
09:33I know nothing about this.
09:35I've never seen one before.
09:37You could be going underwater
09:38or up in the air.
09:39I have no idea.
09:40But you probably,
09:41are you a pilot?
09:42I wish.
09:44No.
09:45I mean, you'll probably never see
09:46another one of those again.
09:49Made 1950s to maybe late 60s.
09:53It's called the Taylor half-pressure helmet.
09:58It was made by a company called Barker, Woodhouse & Taylor.
10:02Designed for the Vulcan bombers and the Lightnings.
10:06So there would be very few of those actually made.
10:10So what are you doing with it?
10:11I picked it up in an auction about 40 years ago.
10:15So I paid £35 for this box of stuff.
10:18And that was in it.
10:19Ever since?
10:19And it's been in a box in my workshop ever since.
10:22Ever since.
10:23And never got into the house.
10:24He brought it home
10:25and I was like,
10:27what's that?
10:28I don't know.
10:29So off I went
10:30and did all the research on it
10:33to find out what it was.
10:34Right.
10:34There were £25,000 to make each.
10:39So you've got something quite special here.
10:41Yeah.
10:41Well, Simon, as you know, is our expert.
10:43Yes.
10:44And I'm just wondering,
10:46I wonder,
10:46are you an expert on pressure helmets?
10:50We're going to find that out.
10:51I'm feeling under pressure.
10:53Exactly.
10:54No pressure.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Yes.
10:57Well, you've kind of told us
10:58all we need to know about it, really.
11:01Yeah.
11:02The Vulcan bomber.
11:03I mean, that was...
11:04Yes.
11:04That was my favourite.
11:05I've seen them close up.
11:07Yeah.
11:07They're huge.
11:08Huge.
11:08This was life or death
11:10because, especially with the lightnings,
11:12when you're flying at high altitude
11:14as they were,
11:16pressure and g-force
11:17was just incredible.
11:19And the whole process of this,
11:21you had an inflatable
11:22kind of bladder thing inside.
11:24Right.
11:25All silk-lined.
11:27For comfort.
11:27For comfort, yes.
11:29And that would sort of equalise the pressure
11:31around your skull, etc.,
11:33to stop you what they call
11:34having red-out,
11:35which is kind of like black-out,
11:37but red-out.
11:38But we've got
11:38our nice little label
11:41on the top there
11:42for tailor,
11:44pressure helmets.
11:45So type A would lead you
11:47to think logically
11:49that this would be
11:50the first model, really,
11:53wouldn't it?
11:53Some of the research
11:54we've been doing on that,
11:56all the ones that we've ever seen
11:57and all the ones
11:58any of the specialists have seen
11:59are always a type E.
12:01Yeah.
12:02That one's actually a type A
12:03and only one of them's
12:05ever come up for sale
12:06in the past.
12:07Wow.
12:08Obviously,
12:09it's going to appeal
12:10to collectors
12:10of military items,
12:13that kind of thing,
12:14aviation buffs.
12:19I'm going to put you
12:20on the spot now.
12:22Can you give us
12:22an evaluation on that?
12:23You're actually going to ask me
12:25for an evaluation, right?
12:26Yes.
12:26Yeah, it's one of those,
12:29where do we start?
12:31I've never seen one
12:32go through auction,
12:33so I've no comparable
12:35to go with at all.
12:38So I'm going to just have
12:39to go on instinct.
12:42I mean, it should be four figures,
12:43but I honestly don't know.
12:46It's that specialist auction
12:47scenario, isn't it?
12:50I would imagine,
12:50because what would you like
12:52to get for it?
12:53Probably in excess
12:56of two and a half thousand,
12:57if I could.
12:58You're going to have to think,
13:00whatever you get offered
13:01next door,
13:02I would seriously stop,
13:04give yourself a few moments
13:05to think about it.
13:07Yeah.
13:07Great.
13:08Well, you two,
13:09best of luck.
13:10Thanks.
13:11Bye-bye.
13:12Bye.
13:14You can't really display it,
13:16can you, at home?
13:16No.
13:17No, that's what I mean.
13:19I can see it in an aviation museum,
13:22in a big glass cabinet.
13:24Yeah.
13:24With other similar things
13:25from lightning jets
13:26and Vulcans, etc.
13:28Yeah.
13:33Simon found it quite difficult
13:35to value the helmet
13:37because it's so rare.
13:39It just depends
13:40on what sort of dealers
13:42we've got,
13:43whether they know enough
13:45about specialised items
13:47to make an offer.
13:52Hi there.
13:53Hello.
13:53Hello.
13:53Hi.
13:54Hello.
13:54Hi.
13:55I'm very happy
13:56to welcome you
13:57in the bidding room.
13:58Two for the price of one.
14:00Yeah.
14:01So may I ask your names?
14:03I'm Nicky.
14:03I'm Craig.
14:04Nicky and Craig.
14:05Which amazing object
14:07did you bring
14:08to us here
14:09in the bidding room?
14:11Oh!
14:12Oh, amazing.
14:14And where on earth
14:16did you get this from?
14:17I bought that
14:19in an auction.
14:20There was a box there
14:21and it was full
14:22of all sorts of things
14:23with it,
14:23including that.
14:24Is it a pilot helmet?
14:26It's what they call
14:27a half-pressure helmet.
14:30It was basically used
14:31for the Vulcan bombers.
14:33Really?
14:34Wow.
14:35So this is a Type A
14:37and the ones
14:39that you'll probably see
14:40if you research them
14:41is a Type E.
14:43Now, there's only ever been
14:44one of the Type A
14:46go-to auction
14:46and that was in 2017.
14:49So it's very rare.
14:50So it is.
14:51Wow.
14:51Really super rare.
14:53But what's the difference?
14:54It's just that
14:54the Type A
14:55was originally
14:57the first one
14:58when they started
14:59testing them.
15:00OK.
15:00And then the Type E
15:01became a better version
15:03later on.
15:04But when you think
15:05though,
15:05the Vulcans,
15:06I think there was only
15:07about 130 Vulcans made.
15:09The Lightning's
15:09was only 330 made.
15:11So, you know,
15:12in real terms,
15:13there can't have been
15:13that many of those
15:14helmets made.
15:15No, no, absolutely.
15:16Is it complete
15:16like it is?
15:18Yeah, that's exactly
15:19as it should be.
15:20That red bit on the front,
15:21that red piece,
15:23they used to call
15:23that the food hatch.
15:24They would just put
15:25a chocolate bar
15:25or something through there
15:26and eat it.
15:27Things you don't think about
15:28but indeed
15:29it's very practical.
15:30George, I think
15:32this would fit you
15:34and your hair.
15:35Oh my goodness.
15:38You look like
15:38a stormtrooper.
15:41It's actually quite scary.
15:43It's like feeling
15:44on the moon.
15:47Thunderbirds are gone!
15:49Hello, world.
15:52Unbelievable.
15:55When you put it on,
15:56you don't hear
15:57anything anymore.
15:58It's just crazy.
15:59It's like you're
15:59on the moon.
15:59It'd be quite handy
16:00when you sat next to Joe
16:01then.
16:03Let me please
16:04be the first
16:04to start
16:05the actual bidding
16:06on this amazing object.
16:10Unusually,
16:11Simon may not
16:12have been able
16:12to value
16:13the half-pressure helmet
16:14but Craig and Nicky
16:16are hoping
16:16to get around
16:17£2,500.
16:19So just
16:19how high
16:20will the dealers fly?
16:21So I'm going to start
16:24the bidding
16:24with £50.
16:24£50.
16:26£60.
16:29I'll go £70.
16:30£100.
16:32£150.
16:35£180.
16:37That's when I'm injecting.
16:40Injecting.
16:41Injecting.
16:42Oh dear.
16:43That's when I'm out
16:44but thank you.
16:45OK.
16:47I'm out
16:47and thank you very much
16:49for the history
16:50as well.
16:53Well I have to say
16:54I have no clue
16:56of what you expected
16:57or not
16:58but I think
16:59well
16:59to see
17:00biggest face
17:01that we're quite
17:02away from
17:03what you wear.
17:04Yeah I think we are.
17:05I'm going to eject it
17:06at that stage
17:07but I think we are
17:09quite a way away
17:10aren't we?
17:11We've had a valuation
17:12on it
17:12of £2,500.
17:14Oh wow.
17:15Doesn't surprise me.
17:16Yeah.
17:17So now you know
17:18how rare it is
17:19do you want to
17:19raise your bid?
17:21I'm going to say
17:21that I'm out as well
17:22but only because
17:23I don't know enough
17:24about it.
17:24It's not really my
17:25usual thing
17:26but thank you.
17:27OK.
17:28What would be
17:28the minimum price
17:29you want to sell it?
17:30£2,500.
17:34Well that's going
17:35to be too much
17:36for me
17:36and I completely
17:37understand that
17:38it's so specialised
17:39and you had so much
17:40research about it.
17:41Can I
17:41I've been dying
17:42to ask though
17:43what you paid
17:44for the box
17:45of stuff.
17:45£35.
17:46How much?
17:47£35.
17:50So even at our offer
17:52you'd have made
17:52good money.
17:54I think
17:55with it being
17:56a specialised
17:57aviation type
17:58thing
17:59it was beyond
18:01the dealers
18:01that are there
18:02but
18:04you know
18:04you don't know
18:05what's in the pipeline
18:06you don't know
18:06who knows who
18:07so there's always
18:08the potential there
18:09for a future sale.
18:11I'm sorry
18:11we couldn't get a deal
18:12today but
18:12thank you for coming
18:13alive.
18:13It's alright
18:14thanks for having us.
18:15You make a better
18:23antique expert
18:24than a pilot.
18:25Yeah I know
18:25I know
18:25thank you
18:26thank you
18:26I thought that's the best
18:27compliment I've had
18:28today.
18:29I wouldn't want to be
18:29in your play mate.
18:36Third in is Wally
18:37with a decorative piece
18:39that could bring a bit
18:40of va-va-voom
18:41into the bidding room.
18:44The item I brought in
18:44today is from the late
18:4650s early 60s
18:47and it's very colourful.
18:49I think it's pretty unique
18:50it'll be very interesting
18:51to see what Simon
18:52thinks of it.
18:54You could say
18:54that's a mini poster
18:55it's quite big
18:57it is.
19:00Hello Wally
19:00welcome to the bidding room
19:02thank you very much
19:03what a lovely poster
19:03it's very nice
19:04yeah it's great
19:05colourful
19:05very
19:06when did you find it?
19:08It was given to me
19:09by a chap
19:1030
19:1235 years ago
19:13it hung
19:14in my
19:15business's
19:17waiting room
19:17for 20 odd years
19:18and when I retired
19:20I took it
19:20back home with me
19:21it went in the garage
19:23and that's where
19:24it stayed until
19:25till now.
19:26Did you ever have
19:27one of these?
19:27Yeah but
19:28it had holes
19:29in the floor
19:30and you could see
19:31the road as you
19:32were driving along.
19:33Well what a fun story
19:34and it is a great
19:36thing isn't it?
19:36Yeah I think
19:38it's original
19:38artwork.
19:40So that would have
19:40been early 60s
19:4261, 62
19:43something like that
19:43and it's
19:44iconic
19:45iconic motor car
19:47and we've got a
19:48signature there
19:48on the print
19:49which I think
19:50reads Johnston
19:51and kind of the
19:52angle he's coming
19:53at from this is
19:54you've got these
19:55high powered
19:56sports cars
19:57in the background
19:58and the drivers
19:59and they're all
20:00sort of looking
20:00enviously
20:01but condition
20:03is fantastic
20:03advertising posters
20:05in general
20:05really good market
20:07for them.
20:09Simon what do you
20:10think it's worth?
20:12I think you should
20:13do really well
20:14because you've got
20:15a lot of plus point
20:16elements going on
20:17with it
20:17you've got advertising
20:18you've got vintage
20:19cars
20:19I think
20:20if I had it
20:22in the auction
20:22room
20:22I'd happily
20:23put an estimate
20:24on it of
20:25I'm going to say
20:27150 to 200
20:30that kind of bracket
20:31OK
20:31I'm happy with that
20:33I'm happy with that
20:34very kind of you
20:34to bring it in
20:35it's fantastic
20:36and best of luck
20:37thank you very much
20:38thank you
20:38bye bye
20:39bye
20:39I always remember
20:41watching on telly
20:42the rallies
20:43and you'd have
20:44the white mini
20:45with the black number
20:46on the side door
20:47there wouldn't you
20:48yeah
20:48the value
20:54by Simon
20:56was between
20:56150 and 200 pounds
20:58which was very nice
20:59so yeah
21:00very pleased
21:01hi
21:04hello

21:16reveal please
21:17certainly shall
21:18for you

21:29publicity poster
21:30right
21:30yeah it was
21:31the original artwork
21:32that they put in
21:33showrooms
21:35what I love about this
21:36I mean it's an
21:37iconic British car
21:39isn't it
21:39it's just
21:40the Italian job
21:41and driving down
21:42the roads
21:43oh yeah
21:43it's just
21:44oh it's amazing
21:45but the graphics
21:46on this
21:47are so sort of
21:48typical
21:48of the actual age
21:50as well
21:50I love it
21:51it's absolutely gorgeous
21:53do we know
21:53what date it is
21:5460 odd years old
21:56yeah
21:56I mean the face
21:57on the people
21:58driving it
21:58are quite like
21:59deco
21:59almost like
22:00you know
22:00when you've got
22:00the pointy chins
22:01and stuff
22:01I'd say it's
22:02very very late 50s
22:04almost when
22:04came into production
22:05so I would put it
22:06late 50s
22:08very early 60s
22:09but oh what a thing
22:11what a thing

25:44you know
25:45no problem
25:45next up is Anne
25:51with a stellar collection
25:53that's out of this world
25:55I've got three items
25:57they're brightly coloured
25:59metallic
26:00retro
26:01and can be a lot of fun
26:03so is this your sort of era
26:07er yes
26:10probably two of the three
26:11hmm
26:12maybe not the third
26:13because it was
26:15it just went
26:15straight over me
26:16did it really
26:17yeah yeah
26:18I wasn't really into space
26:19and stuff like that
26:20but
26:20but it did have its
26:22it did have its moment
26:23didn't it
26:23in the history of toys
26:24ah
26:26hello
26:26hello Anne
26:28welcome to the bidding room
26:29thank you
26:29first question to ask you
26:31is
26:31were these yours
26:32well they're my husband's
26:34oh your husband's
26:35yes
26:36he's the collector
26:37oh is he
26:37he bought them about
26:38five or ten years ago
26:40okay
26:40and then we moved house
26:41right
26:42they wouldn't fit in the display cases
26:44and
26:45are you glad to see the back of them
26:47yes
26:47okay
26:49I love these
26:51as much for the boxes
26:52as much as the toys
26:55if you notice
26:55because we get so much information
26:57from the boxes
26:57yes
26:58as to what goes on
26:59when you turn these things
27:01into action
27:02this chappy in the middle
27:04the
27:05space frontier rocket
27:07we have a
27:09revolving top
27:10and a revolving
27:11tail
27:13and then when you turn it on
27:15our little
27:15surprise
27:16astronaut comes out
27:17and starts
27:18firing things at everybody
27:20um
27:21I love that one as well
27:22the moon express
27:23the idea of
27:24travelling around
27:25in a
27:26train on the
27:27it says
27:27quite noisy as well
27:28non-stop action
27:30instant space noise
27:32wow
27:33with a slight
27:35variation in dates
27:37these two I think
27:39are probably
27:39very late 60s
27:41maybe
27:42it's 1970
27:44that kind of
27:44area
27:45whereas I think
27:46this one is possibly
27:47a little later
27:47than that even
27:48right
27:49I know it's
27:50Italian made
27:51obviously plastic based
27:52but we do have
27:54tin plate metal
27:55on there as well
27:56with the Japanese ones
27:58they're
27:58they're easier
27:59because
28:00they did a lot
28:01post war
28:02of
28:02tin plate toys
28:04and when we get
28:05to the late 60s
28:06and 70s
28:07good old plastic
28:08starts coming in
28:09doesn't it
28:09and replacing
28:10replacing the tin plate
28:11but lovely
28:13nice colourful
28:14items and
28:15and the most
28:15important thing of all
28:17is their fun
28:17you know
28:18yeah
28:18we know that they
28:20are very collectible
28:21mmm
28:21the space theme
28:23actually is very
28:23commercial
28:24so that's good
28:25going next door
28:26that is very good
28:27very good news
28:28Simon
28:32is the price
28:33going to be out
28:34of this world
28:34um
28:36yes
28:37you should be fine
28:38the one
28:38dealers will know
28:40instantly
28:40there's a market
28:41for these
28:41so I think
28:42quite confidently
28:43you should be
28:44in that
28:44I'm going to say
28:47100 to 150
28:48bracket
28:49you know
28:50but
28:50how does that sound
28:52um
28:52it'd be nice
28:53if we got a bit more
28:54because they did
28:55cost more
28:56did they
28:56yeah
28:56sort of thing
28:57yeah
28:57well you might
28:58we can't remember
28:58how much
28:59but
28:59you might
29:00you know
29:01you might be able
29:01to push them
29:02along
29:02okay
29:03well brilliant
29:04thank you so much
29:05thank you
29:05lovely to meet you

29:18brilliant
29:24I'm hooked
29:25Simon said
29:31probably around
29:32100 to 150
29:34I'd like to get
29:35a bit more
29:36if I can
29:36because I know
29:37my husband paid
29:38more for them

29:53revelling at your
29:55items that you've got
29:55here today
29:56all these wonderful
29:57toys
29:58um
29:58how long have you
29:59had them

30:01five or ten years
30:02um
30:03they were part of
30:05my husband's
30:05tin toy collection
30:06um

30:18yay
30:19hey
30:20oh my god
30:21right can everyone
30:22just move away
30:23and just leave me here
30:24for a couple of hours
30:24how old is that
30:26and is that
30:27is that a Japanese
30:28one or
30:28Simon reckoned
30:29it was probably
30:301970s
30:32the later end
30:33of the 70s
30:34the other two
30:34are Japanese
30:35but that's
30:36Italian
30:36oh right

30:41on the floor
30:41can I play
30:42with the other one
30:43when it hits the
30:43carpet
30:43it will turn directions
30:45if it bumps into
30:46something
30:47which one you're
30:47talking about

31:09I'm very impressed
31:10by those
31:11those toys
31:12I never received toys
31:13like this
31:14when I was younger
31:14it's because you're 33
31:16though you weren't born
31:17in the 70s
31:17there is a reason
31:19I think we'd better
31:23crack on
31:24and start
31:26some bidding
31:27before your batteries
31:28run out
31:28the dealers may have
31:33had a blast
31:33playing with the toys
31:34but after Simon's
31:36valuation
31:36of 100
31:37to 150 pounds
31:39Anne hopes the bidding
31:40will now rocket up
31:41the price
31:42okay
31:45I'll start
31:46at 10 pounds
31:4720
31:48I'll go 25
31:5030 pounds
31:5435
31:55I'll go 40
31:5750 pounds
32:0160 pounds
32:0365 pounds
32:05is my bid
32:06sadly I think that's
32:08where my batteries run out
32:09but thank you very much
32:10thank you very much

32:17to drop out as well
32:19so I am out
32:20on that

32:32would you accept 75
32:34no

32:42or as near as possible
32:45120 Biden
32:47just a tiny bit
32:49more
32:49reach for the stars
32:51to be honest

32:52what I was gonna pay
32:53Ian do you wanna lend us a tenner
32:55well not lend me
32:56give me
32:57there's no lending
32:59you're not getting it back
33:00I'll do you a favour
33:01do you know the fiver you owe me

33:08he owes me five
33:09and you get my five too
33:10I'll tell you what
33:11I'll happily give you a fiver
33:12so if you all chip in a fiver
33:15and you can play with them
33:16as much as your heart desires
33:18yeah yeah yeah
33:19that means we would get
33:21to the 140 mark
33:24yeah
33:27this is the first thing
33:35we've all bought together
33:36oh that's true

33:42as long as your heart desires
33:44so I'm coming at your home
33:45to play with them
33:45oh yes
33:46in the end
33:47JB bought the toys
33:49he fell in love with them
33:50and he paid me 140
33:52do we get an invite
33:53to go around to your house
33:54to get
33:55to buy the rest of it
33:56as well

33:57yeah
33:58lots to go
33:59no you've been amazing
34:00thank you so much
34:01thank you very much

34:12will JB pick an off one
34:14yes
34:15it's
34:16not
34:17you
34:18last in is Helen
34:26with two glamorous
34:27but practical items
34:29that are bound to turn heads
34:30there's a pair of them
34:32and they're made out of brass
34:34or bronze
34:35they're art nouveau
34:37and they're very ornate
34:38I use them sometimes
34:40but I've just got so much stuff
34:42any idea
34:45yes
34:46yes
34:47yes I do
34:48oh well done
34:49I haven't got a clue
34:50hello
34:53hello Helen
34:55welcome to the bidding room
34:57thank you
34:57I'm intrigued
34:58I think Simon knows what they
34:59what they are for
35:00I'm just trying to work it out
35:02are they from a shop
35:03do you think
35:03yes
35:04I bought them from a shop
35:05about 30 years ago
35:07it was a very old fashioned
35:10ladies
35:11outfitters
35:12that was closing down
35:13right
35:13and they were being used
35:15as hat stands
35:17right
35:18do you remember what you
35:19paid for them
35:20about 40 pounds
35:21but it was 30 years ago
35:23so it was quite a lot of money
35:23yeah
35:23it was quite a lot of money
35:24but I just loved them
35:25classic Art Nouveau
35:27so they'll date from
35:291890 to 1910
35:32that kind of age
35:34and are they brass?
35:36it's a brass finish
35:37but whilst I've been having
35:38a closer look
35:39I can see the copper
35:41underneath that copper colour
35:42so I think they're brass
35:44on copper
35:45Art Nouveau is all about
35:46organic
35:47free-flowing
35:48naturalistic lines
35:50and these two have got those
35:52in abundance
35:53I'm so glad you've got
35:56a pair
35:56because it makes
35:57such a difference
35:58I think
35:58when I'm going to tell you
36:00what they actually are
36:01but they are in fact
36:02table bases
36:03so you would have had
36:05a circular
36:06plate glass top
36:08and they would have been
36:09in the shop
36:10for display purposes
36:11I found one mark
36:13underneath
36:14which is a capital F
36:16and then another F
36:18and I have no idea
36:20I've got to be honest
36:21I have no idea
36:22who
36:22who that is
36:24but I have seen
36:26these before
36:27they're sort of
36:28tailor made
36:28for our dealers
36:29though aren't they?
36:30yeah
36:30in a funny way
36:31absolutely
36:31I think they'll do
36:33really well
36:34good
36:34Simon
36:37what do you think
36:40they're worth?
36:43in the early 90s
36:45I think it was
36:46£40
36:46very well spent
36:48I do
36:49I do
36:49I do
36:49I think
36:50there's not going to be
36:52huge huge money
36:53but I think easily
36:55they will fall into that
36:56I'm going to say
36:59140 to 200
37:01bracket
37:02see if they recognise
37:04that they are table bases
37:05that would be quite interesting
37:06so
37:07just hold back
37:08on what you know
37:08yes
37:09see what they come up
37:10yeah
37:11happy with
37:13you look very happy
37:14very happy with that
37:14isn't that good
37:15lovely to meet you
37:16thank you very much
37:17and wish you best of luck
37:18I think you'll do fine
37:18thank you
37:19great bye
37:20thank you bye bye
37:21yes
37:23you've got rather attached
37:24as always
37:25you start
37:25you start talking about them
37:26and I start thinking
37:27oh I wouldn't mind those
37:28Simon thought the value
37:36was between 140
37:38and 200 pounds
37:39which was a very nice surprise
37:41hello
37:46hello
37:47hello
37:47hi there
37:50hi welcome
37:51oh
37:52very nice

37:56and what's your name
37:57Helen
37:57hi Helen
37:58well we can't work out
38:01what's underneath the cloth
38:01would you like to
38:02reveal it for us
38:04oh
38:10very nice
38:12oh
38:13well it's very nice
38:14hang on Helen
38:14much as you look lovely
38:16in that hat
38:17is the hat anything to do
38:19with those brass stuns
38:20it could be
38:22hmm
38:22oh
38:24oh
38:25okay
38:26hmm
38:27so
38:27right
38:28oh
38:29here we go
38:30there's the main man
38:31the main man's come in yes
38:32hello hello
38:33hello
38:33hello
38:34hello
38:34hello
38:35we are still stumped as to what they are
38:37because they're not a hat stand in my opinion
38:39are they true to Art Nouveau period
38:42oh absolutely yeah
38:43they are
38:43they're bang on
38:44bang on 1900 in date
38:46okay
38:461890-1900
38:48I think Helen's been using it as a hat stand
38:50but then Simon told me
38:52but then Simon told me that that's actually the wrong way up
38:54right
38:55okay
38:55this should be the other way up
38:57it's interesting that we said brass
39:01that they are in fact copper
39:03oh
39:04right
39:04but brass on copper
39:05oh really
39:06okay
39:06that's the right way around
39:08oh okay
39:09oh it looks better there doesn't it
39:11so what they actually were
39:14plate glass top
39:16oh yes
39:18I see
39:18so they were shop display stands
39:21oh
39:21oh
39:22oh
39:23so Simon
39:23did you purposely put them upside down
39:25so that you could trick us
39:26it was a good little test wasn't it
39:28yeah
39:28yeah
39:29which we all failed
39:30but never mind
39:31but they do work rather well
39:35don't you think
39:35oh
39:36yes
39:36as hat stands
39:38oh Helen
39:39I am an avid wearer of hats
39:42except in the bidding room
39:44and so the thought of having my own personal hat stands
39:49is just very very exciting
39:51and also I just adore this period
39:54I mean the Art Nouveau
39:56with the shape, the design, the swirl, the curves, the colour
40:00the
40:00the sophistication
40:03that's what I love
40:04but did I
40:05excuse me
