00:00Dealers like to play around, but the fun and games end when the bidding starts.
00:07In the heart of Edinburgh, sellers of the curious and collectible...
00:12Do you think the dealers will snap it up for a good price?
00:15...will face five dealers with money to burn.
00:17Look into my eyes. You need this.
00:20Like eclectic collector Ian.
00:24Decorative dealer Joe.
00:25Love it!
00:27Mid-century buyer Jackie.
00:28Look at that smile!
00:30Vintage collector JB.
00:32And Belgian art dealer George.
00:35First, auctioneer Simon will value the items to help nail the best sale.
00:40Could be a life-changing amount of money.
00:43So, how will today's lot do?
00:45So they're all working?
00:46Yes.
00:46You'll probably never see another one of those again.
00:49Oh, wow!
00:51Always wanted to do this.
00:54When they enter the bidding room.
00:56Now you know how rare it is, do you want to raise your bid?
00:5875.
00:59At 220 and bid?
01:01We're getting there.
01:02Any advance?
01:04150 and I'll let you take it.
01:05I'm out.
01:06Well done.
01:07Anyone for tennis?
01:10Simon?
01:12Anyone?
01:13First up are Scott and Claire with a vintage contraption that could smooth the wheels in the bidding room.
01:34I've brought along an item that had a previous purpose.
01:38It's made of cast iron, wood, and it's deceptively heavy.
01:42It looks really lovely now.
01:43It didn't previously, but now it does.
01:45What would you call it?
01:47We'd call it industrial trolley.
01:50And what would they push around on it?
01:53Sort of sacks of this and boxes of that.
01:56Covent garden and pallets of tomatoes and things, but whatever.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Yeah.
02:01Hi there.
02:05Hello, Scott.
02:05Hello, Claire.
02:06Very nice to meet you.
02:08Look what you brought in.
02:09Some industrial...
02:10It is, indeed.
02:11...sort of masculine thing.
02:13And I bought a trolley.
02:16What is it?
02:18We think it's a factory trolley, but we're not 100% certain.
02:21Scott found it in a reclamation yard on the side of the road.
02:25In the pouring rain, I just pulled up, said, I'm going to have a look,
02:28and I disappeared like some sort of junkyard ferret into this pile of cast iron.
02:32And you came back to that and you said, what have you...
02:35100%.
02:36I said, what am I...
02:36That's nearly what she said.
02:37Because it was...
02:38Nearly what she said.
02:39It was soaking wet.
02:40It was covered in mould and algae and rust.
02:43It took about three months to dry out.
02:45The wood was literally dripping.
02:47Yeah.
02:48It was going to be a coffee table in our house,
02:50but the beagles thought it was a beagle seat.
02:54So, um...
02:55It's been living there ever since, hasn't it?
02:56I've had to part company with it, really.
02:58Right, OK.
02:59And what did you pay for it, if you don't mind my asking?
03:01I paid the obscene amount of £30.
03:04£30.
03:05Yeah, good find.
03:06Really, really good find.
03:08I love all the metalwork, the ironwork on it.
03:10It's absolutely gorgeous.
03:12We've got these remnants of...
03:14Well, I think, guys, are kind of like plastic.
03:18Mm-hmm.
03:18So, to me, that's going to date this to...
03:21..sort of 1930s, 40s, that kind of vintage.
03:25Our wheels are each fully marked with the Slingsby stamp,
03:30London and Bradford.
03:31You cleaned them really well.
03:32You did.
03:34But this middle wheel is adjustable, presumably, Nigel,
03:37for turning.
03:38Turning, yeah.
03:38It's like a turntable trolley, in effect.
03:41Mm.
03:44Are these good sellers, Simon?
03:47I'd be surprised if you don't do quite well with it.
03:50The way you've brought it back to life, I think,
03:53is really fantastic.
03:55And in its present state,
03:56I think a fair auction estimate would be...
04:00..easily...
04:02..80 to 120.
04:04But if two people fall in the middle, it's going to creep on, isn't it?
04:11How do you feel about that?
04:12Yeah, I feel OK about that.
04:14I'm quite happy to try and give them a squeeze.
04:15Yeah, give them a squeeze.
04:16Absolutely.
04:17OK, you two, thanks very much for bringing us in
04:19and wish you the best of luck.
04:21Thank you very much.
04:22Thank you both for having us.
04:23Bye.
04:25But you feel how easy it is to turn.
04:27Oh, it's great, isn't it?
04:28It's great, isn't it?
04:29Yeah.
04:31Yeah.
04:34Simon valued the trolley at £80 to £120.
04:40I think I'm looking forward to locking horns with them
04:42because that's the fun bit now.
04:44The selling is the fun bit.
04:48Hello.
04:49Hi there.
04:49Hello.
04:50Hello, hello.
04:51Oh, dear.
04:52Welcome to the bidding room.
04:53Thank you very much.
04:54Pleasure to be here.
04:55Pleasure to see you.
04:56What's your names?
04:56I'm Claire.
04:57Claire?
04:58I'm Scott.
04:58Scott.
04:59Hi, Claire.
04:59Hi, Scott.
05:01Nice to meet you both.
05:02Would one of you, or both of you,
05:03would like to reveal all, please?
05:04I think that's good.
05:04I'll do the honours.
05:06Go on, then.
05:06Excellent.
05:08Always wanted to do this.
05:09Yay!
05:11Make it a big one.
05:12Woo-hoo!
05:13That's nice.
05:14Oh, look at that.
05:15Oh, that's nice.
05:17That's a nice old trolley, isn't it?
05:18Isn't it?
05:19Look at that.
05:21It didn't always look like that.
05:22No.
05:24Where did you guys get it from?
05:26In an industrial reclamation yard.
05:28Oh.
05:29And I'm not even going to tell you what she said
05:30as I put it into the back of the car.
05:31So I'm assuming plenty of elbow grease
05:34and dark wax has gone into that.
05:36And an awful lot of skin knuckles
05:37and a healthy garnish of expletives, yes.
05:41Sounds like our everyday was furnished, doesn't it?
05:44Oh, it is heavy, isn't it?
05:45It's really heavy.
05:47It was obviously designed
05:48to carry something spectacularly heavy.
05:51Yeah, him.
05:52Belly down.
05:54Let's see how well it works.
05:56Belly down.
05:56You could use it as a vintage flatbed trolley
05:58for a car.
05:59Legs up like that.
06:00Oh.
06:01She's actually quite...
06:02It might not go on the carpet.
06:04There it goes.
06:04Oh, my God.
06:21That was amazing.
06:23Wow.
06:24Getting back to the serious business.
06:26Did Simon give any indications
06:29of the age of this?
06:30He feels that it's into war.
06:32Into war.
06:33Yeah.
06:34OK, then, guys and girls,
06:35is it time to get some roly-poly bids going?
06:38Yes.
06:40After that little bit of fun,
06:42can Scott and Claire push the dealers
06:44past Simon's £80 to £120 valuation?
06:48Right, I'll kick it off
06:51at a mighty £30.
06:55Ooh.
06:56I'll go £40.
06:58£50.
07:01£55.
07:03£60.
07:05£65.
07:06£70.
07:08I'll go £80.
07:10£90.
07:11£100.
07:13£120.
07:14£130, then.
07:16£140.
07:18I'm going to say I'm out of that,
07:20but thank you.
07:22I will join JB,
07:24and I'm out too.
07:25I'm sorry.
07:26I am going to say I am out.
07:30I'm going to be out.
07:31At £140.
07:33How does that sound?
07:35£150, and I'll let you take it.
07:40It's a do.
07:41Yeah.
07:46What did you pay for it?
07:50No, I'm going to...
07:51Right.
07:53I paid £30.
07:55Well done.
07:56But of course, you put all the work in.
07:58Yes.
07:58Yes.
07:58We sold the trolley to Joe,
08:00and the winning bid was £150.
08:03We got an instant positive feedback
08:05the second they saw it,
08:06so that just felt good.
08:08They all really liked it straight away.
08:09As soon as the cloth came off,
08:10they were all like,
08:11wow.
08:12So that was really good.
08:13Well, I have to say,
08:20I absolutely adore it.
08:22So thank you both for bringing it in.
08:24It's been a pleasure to meet you.
08:25Thank you very much.
08:26Thank you, everybody.
08:27Bye, everybody.
08:32Oh, you ready, Ian?
08:33This is crazy.
08:56Next in are Craig and Nicky
08:58with a distinctive item
09:00that could send prices sky high.
09:02The item we've brought in today
09:04is, well, it's unusual.
09:07It's something you can wear.
09:09We've only managed to find one other one,
09:12and we've got one of the rarest times.
09:15I don't know anything about this at all.
09:18It's a serious bit of kit in this day.
09:21Right, OK.
09:22Something to do with flying, no doubt.
09:23Yeah.
09:26There you come.
09:28Craig and Nicky,
09:29welcome to the bedroom.
09:30Thank you for having us.
09:31Absolute pleasure.
09:33I know nothing about this.
09:35I've never seen one before.
09:37You could be going underwater
09:38or up in the air.
09:39I had no idea.
09:40But you probably...
09:41Are you a pilot?
09:42I wish.
09:44No.
09:45I mean, you'll probably never see
09:46another one of those again.
09:49Made 1950s to maybe late 60s.
09:53It's called a Taylor half-pressure helmet.
09:58It was made by a company called Barker Woodhouse & Taylor.
10:02Designed for the Vulcan bombers and the Lightnings.
10:06So there would be very few of those actually made.
10:10So what are you doing with it?
10:11I picked it up in an auction about 40 years ago.
10:15So I paid £35 for this box of stuff.
10:18And that was in it.
10:19Ever since?
10:20And it's been in a box in my workshop ever since.
10:22Ever since?
10:23And never got into the house?
10:24He brought it home and I was like,
10:27what's that?
10:28I don't know.
10:29So off I went and did all the research on it
10:33to find out what it was.
10:34There were £25,000 to make each.
10:39So you've got something quite special here.
10:41Yeah.
10:41Well, Simon, as you know, is our expert.
10:44Yes.
10:44And I'm just wondering,
10:46are you an expert on pressure helmets?
10:50We're going to find that out.
10:51I'm feeling under pressure.
10:53Exactly.
10:54No pressure.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Yes.
10:57Well, you've kind of told us
10:58all we need to know about it, really.
11:01Yeah.
11:02The Vulcan bomber.
11:03I mean, that was my favourite.
11:06I've seen them close up.
11:07Yeah.
11:07They're huge.
11:08Huge.
11:08This was life or death
11:10because especially with the lightnings,
11:13when you're flying at high altitude as they were,
11:16pressure and g-force was just incredible.
11:20And the whole process of this,
11:21you had an inflatable kind of bladder thing inside.
11:24Right.
11:25All silk-lined.
11:27For comfort.
11:27For comfort, yes.
11:29And that would sort of equalise the pressure
11:31around your skull, et cetera.
11:33to stop you what they call having red out,
11:35which is kind of like black out,
11:37but red out.
11:38But we've got a nice little label
11:41on the top there for tailor,
11:44pressure helmets.
11:45So type A would lead you to think logically
11:49that this would be the first model, really,
11:53wouldn't it?
11:53Some of the research we've been doing on that,
11:56all the ones that we've ever seen
11:57and all the ones any of the specialists have seen
12:00are always a type E.
12:01Yeah.
12:02That one's actually a type A,
12:03and only one of them's ever come up for sale in the past.
12:07Wow.
12:07Obviously, it's going to appeal to collectors
12:10of military items, that kind of thing,
12:14aviation buffs.
12:19I'm going to put you on the spot now.
12:22Can you give us an evaluation on that?
12:23You're actually going to ask me for an evaluation, right?
12:26Yes.
12:26Yeah, it's one of those, where do we start?
12:31I've never seen one go through auction,
12:33so I've no comparable to go with at all.
12:38So I'm going to just have to go on instinct.
12:42I mean, it should be four figures,
12:43but I honestly don't know.
12:46It's that specialist auction scenario, isn't it?
12:50I would imagine, because what would you like to get for it?
12:53Probably in excess of two and a half thousand, if I could.
12:58You're going to have to think,
13:00whatever you get offered next door,
13:02I would seriously stop,
13:04give yourself a few moments to think about it.
13:07Yeah.
13:07Great.
13:08Well, you two, best of luck.
13:10Thanks.
13:11Bye-bye.
13:12Bye.
13:14You can't really display it, can you, at home?
13:16No.
13:18No, that's what I mean.
13:19I can see it in an aviation museum,
13:22in a big glass cabinet.
13:24Yeah.
13:24With other similar things from lightning jets and Vulcans, etc.
13:28Yeah.
13:33Simon found it quite difficult to value the helmet,
13:38because it's so rare.
13:39It just depends on what sort of dealers we've got,
13:43whether they know enough about specialised items to make an offer.
13:48I'm very happy to welcome you in the bidding room.
13:58Two for the price of one.
14:00Yeah.
14:01So may I ask your names?
14:03I'm Nicky.
14:03I'm Craig.
14:04Nicky and Craig.
14:05Which amazing object did you bring to us here in the bidding room?
14:11Oh!
14:12Oh, amazing.
14:14And where on earth did you get this from?
14:17I bought that in an auction.
14:20There was a box there,
14:21and it was full of all sorts of things with it, including that.
14:24Is it a pilot helmet?
14:26It's what they call a half-pressure helmet.
14:30It was basically used for the Vulcan bombers.
14:33Really?
14:34Really?
14:34Wow!
14:35So this is a Type A,
14:38and the ones that you'll probably see if you research them is a Type E.
14:43Now, there's only ever been one of the Type A go-to auction,
14:47and that was in 2017.
14:49So it's very rare.
14:50So it is.
14:51Wow.
14:51Really super rare.
14:53But what's the difference?
14:54It's just that the Type A was originally the first one
14:58when they started testing them.
15:00OK.
15:00And then the Type E became a better version later on.
15:04But when you think, though, the Vulcans,
15:06I think there was only about 130 Vulcans made.
15:09The Lightning's, there was only 330 made.
15:11So, you know, in real terms,
15:13there can't have been that many of those helmets made.
15:15No, no, absolutely.
15:16Is it complete like it is looking?
15:18Yeah, that's exactly as it should be.
15:20That red bit on the front, that red piece,
15:23they used to call that the food hatch.
15:24Of course.
15:25They would just put a chocolate bar or something through there and eat it.
15:27Things you don't think about,
15:28but indeed it's very practical.
15:30Yes, yes.
15:31George, I think this would fit you and your hair.
15:35Oh, my goodness.
15:38You look like a storm trip.
15:41It's actually quite scary.
15:43It's like feeling on the moon.
15:47Thunderbirds are gone.
15:49Hello, world.
15:52Unbelievable.
15:52When you put it on, you don't hear anything anymore.
15:58It's just crazy.
15:59It's like you're on the moon.
16:00You're quite handy when you're sat next to Joe, then.
16:01Let me please be the first to start the actual bidding on this amazing object.
16:08Unusually, Simon may not have been able to value the half-pressure helmet,
16:15but Craig and Nicky are hoping to get around £2,500.
16:19So just how high will the dealers fly?
16:21So I'm going to start the bidding with £50.
16:26£60.
16:29I'll go £70.
16:30£100.
16:32£150.
16:34£180.
16:35That's when I'm injecting.
16:40Injecting.
16:41Injecting.
16:42Oh, dear.
16:43That's when I'm out, but thank you.
16:45OK.
16:47I'm out.
16:48And thank you very much for the history as well.
16:53Well, I have to say, I have no clue of whether you expected or not,
16:58but I think, well, to see Nicky's face,
17:01that we're quite away from what you were.
17:04Yeah, I think we are.
17:05I'm going to eject it at that stage.
17:08But I think we are quite a way away, aren't we?
17:11We've had a valuation on it of £2,500.
17:14Oh, wow.
17:15It doesn't surprise me.
17:16Yeah.
17:17So, now you know how rare it is, do you want to raise your bid?
17:21I'm going to say that I'm out as well,
17:22but only because I don't know enough about it.
17:25It's not really my usual thing, but thank you.
17:27OK.
17:28What would be the minimum price you want to sell it?
17:30£2,500.
17:31LAUGHTER
17:32Well, that's going to be too much for me.
17:36And I completely understand that it's so specialised
17:39and you had so much research about it.
17:41Yes.
17:41Can I...
17:42I've been dying to ask, though, what you paid for the box of stuff.
17:45£35.
17:46How much?
17:47£35.
17:47So, even at our offer, you'd have made good money.
17:53LAUGHTER
17:53I think, with it being a specialised aviation-type thing,
17:59it was beyond the dealers that are there.
18:03But, you know, you don't know what's in the pipeline,
18:06you don't know who knows who,
18:08so there's always the potential there for a future sale.
18:10But I'm sorry I couldn't get a deal today,
18:12but thank you for coming along.
18:13It's all right.
18:14Thanks for having me.
18:15APPLAUSE
18:16You make a better antique expert than a pilot.
18:25Yeah, I know, I know.
18:26Thank you, thank you.
18:27That's the best compliment I've had today.
18:29I wouldn't want to be in your plane, mate.
18:30LAUGHTER
18:31LAUGHTER
18:31Third in is Wally,
18:38with a decorative piece
18:39that could bring a bit of va-va-voom
18:41into the bidding room.
18:44The item I brought in today
18:45is from the late 50s, early 60s,
18:47and it's very colourful.
18:49I think it's pretty unique.
18:50It'll be very interesting to see what Simon thinks of it.
18:54You could say that's a mini poster.
18:56It's quite big.
18:57LAUGHTER
18:57It is.
18:58LAUGHTER
18:58Hello, Wally.
19:00Hello there.
19:01Welcome to the bidding room.
19:02Thank you very much.
19:03What a lovely poster.
19:04It's very nice, isn't it?
19:05Yeah, it's great.
19:05Very colourful.
19:06Very... When did you find it?
19:08It was given to me by a chap 30, 35 years ago.
19:14It hung in my business's waiting room
19:17for 20-odd years,
19:19and when I retired, I took it back home with me.
19:22It went in the garage,
19:23and that's where it stayed until now.
19:26Did you ever have one of these?
19:27Yeah, but it had holes in the floor,
19:31and you could see the road as you were driving along.
19:33Well, what a fun story,
19:34and it is a great thing, isn't it?
19:37Yeah, I think it's original artwork.
19:40So that would have been early 60s, 61, 62,
19:43something like that.
19:43And it's an iconic, iconic motor car,
19:47and we've got a signature there on the print,
19:50which I think reads Johnston.
19:52And kind of the angle he's coming at from this is
19:54you've got these high-powered sports cars in the background
19:58and the drivers,
19:59and they're all sort of looking enviously.
20:02But condition is fantastic.
20:04Advertising posters in general,
20:06really good market for them.
20:07Simon, what do you think it's worth?
20:12I think you should do really well,
20:14because you've got a lot of plus-point elements going on with it.
20:17You've got advertising, you've got vintage cars.
20:20I think if I had it in the auction room,
20:23I'd happily put an estimate on it of...
20:25I'm going to say 150 to 200, that kind of bracket.
20:31OK.
20:32Are you happy with that?
20:33I'm happy with that, yeah.
20:34Very kind of you to bring it in.
20:35It's fantastic, and best of luck.
20:37Thank you very much.
20:39Bye-bye.
20:39Bye.
20:40I always remember watching on telly the rallies,
20:44and you'd have the white mini with the black number
20:47on the side door there, wouldn't you?
20:48Yeah.
20:48The value by Simon was between 150 and 200 pounds,
20:58which was very nice.
21:00So, yeah, very pleased.
21:04Hi.
21:04Hello there.
21:05Hello.
21:05Hello.
21:06Welcome to the bidding room.
21:07Thank you very much.
21:08May I ask your name, please?
21:10My name's Wally.
21:11Wally?
21:11Hello, Wally.
21:12Well, we've been having a guessing game.
21:15What's behind there?
21:16Would you like to reveal, please?
21:17Certainly shall for you.
21:19I guess it's a bidding.
21:21No, not at all.
21:23No.
21:23Oh, no.
21:24Oh, it's the Austin Mini.
21:26Oh!
21:28But so, this was a publicity poster, right?
21:30Yeah, it was the original artwork that they put in showrooms.
21:35What I love about this, I mean, it's an iconic British car,
21:39isn't it?
21:39It's just the Italian job and driving down the road.
21:43Oh, yeah.
21:43It's just, oh, it's amazing.
21:45But the graphics on this is so, sort of, typical of the actual age as well.
21:51I love it.
21:52It's absolutely gorgeous.
21:53Do we know what date it is?
21:55It's 60-odd years old.
21:56Yeah.
21:56I mean, the face on the people driving it are quite, like, deco,
21:59almost like, you know, when you've got the pointy chins and stuff?
22:01Yes.
22:02I'd say it's very, very late 50s, almost when it came into production.
22:05So, I would put it at late 50s, very early 60s.
22:09But, oh, what a thing.
22:11What a thing.
22:13I've got the chequered flag ready.
22:15Are you ready?
22:16Yes.
22:17Let the bidding commence.
22:19After Simon's valuation for the poster of 150 to 200 pounds,
22:26can Waddy steer the dealers into a bidding battle?
22:3050 quid.
22:3155.
22:3360 quid.
22:34Brum, brum, brum.
22:3570 quid.
22:3780.
22:3885 it is.
22:40It's all very fast.
22:41Yeah.
22:41Show your boots.
22:4485.
22:44That's better.
22:5090.
22:52100.
22:53110.
22:55As you see my hair, I prefer to travel with rockets, so...
22:59Not more of a car guy, so I'm out for that reason.
23:04On this occasion, I'm going to be out.
23:06Yeah.
23:06Thank you very much.
23:08OK.
23:08I'm going to be out, I think, at 110.
23:13120.
23:13130.
23:15140.
23:16Oh!
23:17We're getting there.
23:18150.
23:19160.
23:21180.
23:22190.
23:24Has to be 200.
23:27210.
23:28220.
23:30225.
23:31240.
23:34I'm out.
23:36The bid is with me with 240.
23:40How are we standing?
23:42That'll be fine.
23:43Yeah.
23:43Fantastic.
23:47Love it.
23:48Well done, Joe.
23:49Can I ask what Simon the Oracle valued it at?
23:53He valued it between 150 and 200.
23:56Bang on.
23:57Good.
23:57He's so good, isn't he?
23:58He is.
23:59He is.
23:59Jesus Christ.
24:00Unbelievable.
24:00The poster was bought for 240 pounds in the end, and it was bought by Joe.
24:06I got more than what I expected.
24:08She was happy, and I'm happy.
24:10I'll be honest, I'm absolutely gutted, but the best person has won, and I'm glad it's gone
24:15to Joe.
24:16Not.
24:17Lovely to meet you.
24:20Lovely to meet you, and thank you so much for coming in.
24:22Thank you, guys.
24:23Thanks, Mara.
24:24Thanks, Mara.
24:28Well done, Joe.
24:29Not.
24:30I've been really thinking about that Vulcan helmet.
24:42Well, you know, it's funny you say that, because I still have it in my mind.
24:45It seems so special, and it was something that I've never seen before.
24:49So maybe, maybe I should call these people.
24:51What do you think?
24:52I think you're going to regret it if you don't.
24:57Hello.
24:57Oh, hello, Nicky.
24:59How are you doing?
25:01Oh, hi, George.
25:02Oh, you recognize my voice.
25:04It's wonderful.
25:04I did.
25:05I was just thinking about the helmet that you presented.
25:09I would like to make you an offer, if that's possible.
25:12Are you free?
25:13We were talking about 2,500 pounds.
25:16If I offer you that amount, would that be okay?
25:18Just let us discuss it.
25:20I want me a second.
25:22Yeah, okay, George.
25:23We'll take that.
25:24Oh, that's very, very kind, Craig.
25:26Thank you very much.
25:27You're really lovely, both of you.
25:28Thank you, George.
25:29I don't know if he's going to a good home.
25:31Thank you, George.
25:32Okay, bye-bye.
25:33Yes!
25:33Oh, brilliant.
25:34You got it.
25:35I'm so happy.
25:35You got it.
25:36You got it.
25:36You convinced me.
25:38Oh, wonderful.
25:39You got it.
25:40Got it.
25:41So glad.
25:41I was a bit jealous, that's all.
25:42I will lend it to you, you know, no problem.
25:50Next up is Anne with a stellar collection that's out of this world.
25:55I've got three items.
25:58They're brightly coloured, metallic, retro, and can be a lot of fun.
26:05Sam, is this your sort of era?
26:07Er, yes, probably two of the three.
26:12Hmm.
26:12Maybe not the third.
26:14Because it just went straight over me.
26:17Did it really?
26:17Yeah, yeah.
26:18I wasn't really into space and stuff like that.
26:20But it did have its moment, didn't it, in the history of toys.
26:25Ah.
26:26Hello.
26:27Hello, Anne.
26:28Welcome to the bidding room.
26:30First question to ask you is, were these yours?
26:33Well, they're my husband's.
26:35Oh, your husband's?
26:35Yes.
26:36He's the collector.
26:37Oh, is he?
26:38He bought them about five or ten years ago.
26:40Okay.
26:40And then we moved house.
26:42Right.
26:42They wouldn't fit in the display cases.
26:45Are you glad to see the back of them?
26:47Yes.
26:49Okay.
26:50I love these as much for the boxes as much as the toys, if you know.
26:55Because we get so much information from the boxes as to what goes on when you turn these things into action.
27:03This chappy in the middle, the Space Frontier rocket.
27:08We have a revolving top and a revolving tail.
27:14And then when you turn it on, our little astronaut comes out and starts firing things at everybody.
27:19I love that one as well, the Moon Express.
27:23The idea of travelling around in a train on the moon.
27:27It says moon.
27:27They're quite noisy as well, aren't they?
27:29Non-stop action.
27:31Instant space noise.
27:32Wow.
27:33Wow.
27:34With a slight variation in dates, these two, I think, are probably very late 60s, maybe 1970, that kind of area.
27:45Whereas I think this one is possibly a little later than that, even.
27:49Right.
27:49I know it's Italian made, obviously plastic based, but we do have tin plate metal on there as well.
27:57With the Japanese ones, they're easier because they did a lot post-war of tin plate toys.
28:04And when we get to the late 60s and 70s, good old plastic starts coming in, doesn't it, and replacing the tin plate.
28:12But lovely.
28:13Nice colourful items and the most important thing of all is their phone, you know?
28:18Yeah.
28:19We know that they are very collectible.
28:21Mm.
28:21The space theme, actually, is very commercial.
28:25So that's good going next door.
28:26That is very good.
28:27Very good news.
28:32Simon, is the price going to be out of this world?
28:35Erm, yes, you should be fine.
28:38The one, dealers will know instantly there's a market for these, so I think quite confidently you should be in that, I'm going to say 100 to 150 bracket, you know.
28:50How does that sound?
28:52Erm, it'd be nice if we got a bit more, because they did cost more than that sort of thing.
28:57Yeah.
28:57I mean, we can't remember how much, but...
29:00You might, you know, you might be able to push them along, but...
29:03OK, well, brilliant. Thank you so much.
29:05Lovely to meet you, and very good luck.
29:07Thank you very much.
29:08Nice to meet you.
29:09All right, then.
29:09Bye-bye.
29:10Bye.
29:17Here we come.
29:20Brilliant.
29:24I'm hooked.
29:30Simon said probably around 100 to 150.
29:34I'd like to get a bit more if I can, because I know my husband paid more for them.
29:42Hello.
29:43Hello.
29:44Hello.
29:45Hi.
29:45Welcome to the bidding room.
29:47Thank you very much.
29:48And your name is?
29:49I'm Anne.
29:50Hi, Anne.
29:51Hello.
29:51Hi, Anne.
29:52Well, we've all been revelling at your items that you've got here today, all these wonderful
29:57toys.
29:58How long have you had them?
30:01Probably about five or ten years.
30:04They were part of my husband's tin toy collection.
30:07Um, but we don't, haven't got room for them anymore.
30:10They won't fit in the cabinets.
30:13Oh!
30:13Oh, my God!
30:15Can you dive that to it?
30:16Oh, my God, yeah.
30:18Unbelievable.
30:18Yay!
30:19Hey!
30:20Oh, my God!
30:21Right, can everyone just move away and just leave me here for a couple of hours?
30:24How old is that?
30:27And is that, is that a Japanese one, or?
30:29Simon reckoned it was probably 1970s, the later end of the 70s.
30:34The other two are Japanese, but that's Italian.
30:36Oh, right, okay.
30:37But so they're all working?
30:39Yes.
30:39Oh, my God.
30:40And if that goes on the floor, when it hits the carpet, it will turn directions.
30:45If it bumps into something.
30:47Which one are you talking about?
30:48The Moon Express, the red one.
30:49Oh, my God, I want to try it out.
30:52Wow.
30:52Oh, my God.
30:55Oh, wow!
30:57It's coming for you, Ian.
30:59Oh, that's so cool.
31:02Unbelievable.
31:05Let's make it go to TV.
31:06Hey!
31:07Look at that!
31:08Well, I have to say, I'm very impressed by those toys.
31:12I never received toys like this when I was younger.
31:15It's because you're 33, though.
31:16You weren't born in the 70s.
31:18There is a reason why you're not.
31:20Oh, my God.
31:23I think we'd better crack on and start some bidding before your batteries run out.
31:29Oh!
31:29Oh!
31:32The dealers may have had a blast playing with the toys, but after Simon's valuation of 100 to 150 pounds,
31:39Anne hopes the bidding will now rocket up the price.
31:42Okay, I'll start at 10 pounds.
31:4820.
31:49I'll go 25.
31:5330 pounds.
31:5535.
31:56I'll go 40.
31:5950 pounds.
32:0260 pounds.
32:0365 pounds is my bid.
32:07Sadly, I think that's where my batteries run out, but thank you very much.
32:10Thank you very much.
32:12Yeah, and I'm going to do the same as Joe.
32:1575.
32:16My battery's about to drop out as well, so I am out on that.
32:21Mmm, I have no idea.
32:24I'm sorry, but I will leave it to JB because I don't know that enough.
32:30So it's 75 pounds with myself.
32:33Would you accept 75?
32:36No.
32:37No.
32:38How about 80?
32:40Well, we were hoping for 150.
32:42Mmm.
32:43Mmm.
32:44Or as near as possible.
32:46120, Biden.
32:48Just a tiny bit more reach for the stars.
32:51To be honest, I'm 40 pound over what I was going to pay.
32:54Ian, do you want to lend us a tenner?
32:56Well, not lend me, give me.
32:58There's no lending, you're not getting it back.
33:00I'll do you a favour.
33:02Do you know the fiver you owe me?
33:03Yeah.
33:04You can keep that.
33:06And you know what's...
33:07He owes me five, and you get my five, too.
33:11I'll tell you what.
33:11I'll happily give you a fiver.
33:13So if you all chip in a fiver and you can play with them
33:16as much as your heart desires...
33:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
33:19That means we would get to the 140 mark.
33:26Yeah.
33:27Yeah.
33:31This is the first thing we've all bought together.
33:36Oh, that's true.
33:38Er, no.
33:39I said my exact words were, you can play with them...
33:43As long as your heart desires,
33:44so I'm coming at your home to play with them.
33:46Oh, yes.
33:47In the end, JB bought the toys,
33:49he fell in love with them,
33:50and he paid me 140.
33:52Do we get an invite to go around to your house
33:54to buy the rest of it as well?
33:57Any time, yeah.
33:58There's a lot to go.
34:00No, you've been amazing.
34:00Thank you so much.
34:02Thank you very much.
34:03Thank you, Er.
34:03Bye-bye.
34:04Bye-bye.
34:04Bye-bye.
34:04APPLAUSE
34:05Who gets to play with them first?
34:13You'll take me off like that?
34:14It's not you.
34:18LAUGHTER
34:18Last in is Helen,
34:26with two glamorous but practical items
34:29that are bound to turn heads.
34:31There's a pair of them,
34:33and they're made out of brass or bronze.
34:36They're art nouveau, and they're very ornate.
34:39I use them sometimes,
34:40but I've just got so much stuff.
34:42Do you have any idea?
34:46Er, yes.
34:47Really?
34:48Yeah, I do.
34:48Oh, well done.
34:49I haven't got a clue.
34:50LAUGHTER
34:51Hello.
34:54Hello, Helen.
34:55Welcome to the bidding room.
34:57I'm intrigued.
34:58I think Simon knows what they are for.
35:00I'm just trying to work it out.
35:02Are they from a shop, do you think?
35:04Yes.
35:04I bought them from a shop about 30 years ago.
35:08It was a very old-fashioned lady's outfitters.
35:12That was closing down.
35:13Right.
35:14And they were being used as hat stands.
35:17Right.
35:18Do you remember what you paid for them?
35:20About £40, but it was 30 years ago.
35:23That was quite a lot of money.
35:23Yeah, it was quite a lot of money,
35:24but I just loved them.
35:25Yes.
35:26Classic art nouveau.
35:27So they'll date from 1890 to 1910, that kind of age.
35:35And are they brass?
35:36It's a brass finish, but whilst I've been having a closer look,
35:39I can see the copper underneath, that copper colour.
35:43So I think they're brass on copper.
35:46Art nouveau is all about organic, free-flowing, naturalistic lines,
35:50and these two have got those in abundance.
35:54I'm so glad you've got a pair,
35:57because it makes such a difference, I think,
35:59when I'm going to tell you what they actually are.
36:01But they are, in fact, table bases.
36:04So you would have had a circular plate glass top,
36:08and they would have been in the shop for display purposes.
36:12I found one mark underneath,
36:15which is a capital F and then another F.
36:19And I have no idea, I've got to be honest.
36:21I have no idea who that is.
36:25But I have seen these before.
36:27They're sort of tailor-made for our dealers, though, aren't they?
36:30Yeah.
36:30In a funny way.
36:31Absolutely.
36:32I think they'll do really well.
36:34Good.
36:37Simon.
36:39What do you think they're worth?
36:43In the early 90s, I think it was £40 very well spent.
36:48I do, I do.
36:49I think it was...
36:51There's not going to be huge, huge money,
36:53but I think easily they will fall into that...
36:58I'm going to say 140 to 200 bracket.
37:03See if they recognise that they are table bases.
37:05That'll be quite interesting.
37:07So...
37:07Yes, hold back on what you know.
37:09Yes.
37:10See what they come up with.
37:11Yeah.
37:12Yeah.
37:12Happy with...
37:13You look very happy.
37:14Very happy with that.
37:14Isn't that good?
37:15Lovely to meet you.
37:16Thank you very much.
37:17And wish you the best of luck.
37:18I think you'll do fine.
37:19Great.
37:20Bye.
37:21Bye-bye.
37:23Yes, you've got rather attached.
37:24As always, you start talking about them and I start thinking,
37:27oh, I wouldn't mind those.
37:29Simon thought the value was between 140 and 200 pounds,
37:40which was a very nice surprise.
37:41Hi there.
37:50Hi, welcome.
37:51Ooh.
37:52Ooh.
37:52Ooh.
37:53Very nice.
37:54Well, welcome to the bidding room.
37:56And what's your name?
37:57Helen.
37:57Hi, Helen.
37:58Hi, Helen.
37:59Hello.
38:00Well, we can't work out what's underneath the cloth.
38:02Would you like to reveal it for us?
38:09Ooh.
38:10Ooh.
38:10Ooh.
38:11Very nice.
38:12What is that?
38:12Oh.
38:13Well, it's very nice.
38:14Hang on, Helen.
38:14Much as you look lovely in that hat,
38:18is the hat anything to do with those brass stunts?
38:21It could be.
38:22Hmm.
38:24Ooh.
38:25Oh.
38:25OK.
38:26Hmm.
38:27Soak.
38:28Right.
38:28Ah, here we go.
38:30There's the main man.
38:31The main man's come in, yes.
38:32Hello, hello.
38:33Hello.
38:34Hello.
38:34Hello.
38:35We are still stumped as to what they are,
38:37because they're not a hat stand, in my opinion.
38:40Are they true to Art Nouveau period?
38:42Oh, absolutely, yeah.
38:43They are.
38:43They're bang on, bang on 1900 in date.
38:46OK.
38:4618, 19, 19, 100.
38:48I think Helen's been using it as a hat stand.
38:51But then Simon told me that that's actually the wrong way up.
38:54Right.
38:55OK.
38:56This should be the other way up.
38:57It's interesting that we said brass, that they are, in fact, copper.
39:03Oh, yeah.
39:04But brass on copper.
39:05Oh, really?
39:06Oh, yeah.
39:06OK.
39:07That's the right way around.
39:09Oh, OK.
39:10Oh, it looks better there, doesn't it?
39:11Yes.
39:12So, what they actually were, plate glass top.
39:16Oh, yes, I see.
39:18So, they were shop display stands.
39:20So, Simon, did you purposely put them upside down so that you could trick us?
39:27It was a good little test, wasn't it?
39:28Yeah.
39:28Yeah, yeah.
39:29Yeah, which we all failed, but never mind.
39:31But they do work rather well, don't you think?
39:35Oh, yes.
39:36As hat stands.
39:38Oh, Helen, I am an avid wearer of hats, except in the bidding room.
39:44And so, the thought of having my own personal hat stands is just very, very exciting.
39:51And also, I just adore this period.
39:55I mean, the art niveau, the shape, the design, the swirl, the curves, the colour, the sophistication.
40:03That's what I love.
40:04But, did I, excuse me, did I just hear somebody laugh when I said sophistication?
40:10Helen, I've brought my trusty travel gavel, and I'm going to give you a hand.
40:17I think they deserve a good start.
40:20So, guys and ladies, where are we going to start?
40:26The valuation for the stands was £140 to £200, and with Simon now in charge, can he put a feather in his cap?
40:34And get Helen the price she wants.
40:37Go on, Simon.
40:38I'm going to start them myself, at £50.
40:42Very good idea.

41:35At £220 and bid.
41:37Any advance?
41:39I'm out.
41:39£220.
41:40No.
41:41I think everyone else is out, Ellen.
41:44I'm out.
41:45It's up to you.
41:47I would love to accept Joe's offer.
41:49Well done, Joe.
41:50Yay!
41:51Well done!
41:56I'm very, very happy.
41:58Me too.
41:59Good.
42:00I made a very, very good sale.
42:02I'm extremely happy with it.
42:05I've got £220 in my back pocket.
42:08And they were bought by Joe.
42:11I didn't have to do very much.
42:12Simon did it all.
42:13So I just stood there and smiled.
42:16And it was lovely.
42:17Thank you so much for bringing those in today.
42:20I'm absolutely over the moon.
42:24Thank you very much.
42:25I love you.
42:34How many hats do you have, Joe?
42:35A lot.
42:36Yeah, so you're not going to fit them all on there?
42:38No.
42:45Another day in the bidding room.
42:47And a few of our visitors have grown their bank balances significantly.
42:52Simon, you'll remember to water the plants when I'm away, won't you?
42:56Simon?
42:57Water them yourself.
42:58Yeah.
42:59Yeah.
43:21Yeah.
43:26Yeah.
43:27Yeah.
