00:00Hi, this is Cooper Reif, the writer-director of Helen Harper, and today we're going to talk about some scenes.
00:08So this is a scene from episode four that we had to steal, which means we did not have permission to shoot at McDonald's.
00:16We just went through the drive-thru, the four of us, me and Lily in the back seat.
00:22We got to the window. The lady said,
00:25are you guys filming the Hulk? And Mark stayed in character and said, thank you, darling, for the food.
00:33And then she asked again, what are y'all filming? And Mark was like, we're filming a small independent TV show.
00:40Can you keep it together? I love this scene because it is the scene that takes place right after the big Adventure Landing montage
00:49where dad takes his kids to go play laser tag and race go-karts and play arcade games.
00:55And it's this really nice montage of kids being able to be kids, and Harper is very resistant.
01:03And in this scene, dad leans back to Harper, Hal's asleep in the back, and he says to Harper,
01:10Hal seemed had a lot of fun, didn't he?
01:12Yeah, I think he did.
01:13And I think what he's asking is, did you have fun? And Harper's response is very heartbreaking.
01:21But to me, it also pushes dad forward into this territory of realizing maybe Harper doesn't need laser tag and go-karts and ice cream from McDonald's as much as she needs a parent.
01:34And I think that that's what this scene to me is ultimately about.
01:40Wait, sir, I'm sorry. Could you just, could you let us out right here?
01:43God, do you remember this place?
01:44Oh, I'm hammered right now.
01:46This is a scene from episode five, which is the Jesse Harper episode that starts with this big montage of their freshman year when they fell in love.
01:55Jesse and Harper are in an Uber coming from a Halloween party, and Jesse looks out the window and sees this pool that freshman year they swam in.
02:04And they had to get over this big fence to go into the pool.
02:07And what happens next is very funny, but also very heartbreaking.
02:13Yikes.
02:15Jesse gets over the fence as easily as she did freshman year, and Harper cannot, for the life of her, get over the fence.
02:23No, no, I'm too drunk.
02:25You were drunk last time?
02:26I'm older than I was.
02:28No, you're 24.
02:29I think my favorite, like, visual of the scene is this visual moment Lily asked if she could do, and I thought it might be two on the nose, but it turned out really sweet.
02:39Thank you so much for watching. You can stream Helen Harper on MUBI right now. Go do it.
