05:03The Trump's plan is to give selected results in which Rixi Mancada does not win.

06:53Welcome back to From the South, this Monday, December 1st, general elections are underway in San Lucia,
07:05where more than 179,000 people are expected to vote.
07:23Our correspondent, Melinda Los Santos, brings us my details.
07:26Hello, Ale, exactly as you were saying, we're here in San Lucia.
07:38We're in Castries East, the eastern part of the capital.
07:42And the polling is underway at this moment.
07:45Polling stations have been open since 6.30 a.m. local time.
07:49It's 8.45 at this moment, so the polls have been open for over two hours.
07:55Let's recall that this is the general elections called a little bit early, actually, by Prime Minister Philippe Pierre.
08:03He's seeking to renew his mandate for the San Lucia Labour Party, and he called for this elections.
08:11And this early call can be explained a little bit by his confidence,
08:14confidence, the confidence that the party has in the possibility of renewing based on the achievements
08:20that they have conquered during these past years.
08:24Let's recall the mandate started in 2021 right after COVID, and the main topics, the main goals
08:31were the stabilization after that with a program so focused on social measures.
08:38One of the most prominent of them, for example, was the establishment of a national minimum wage.
08:45That national unification was one of the first for San Lucia.
08:50Along with that, several plans, for example, to boost youth jobs creations as well.
08:57So those were some of the measures.
08:59Now, the SLP is now leading with the opposition.
09:04That is the United Workers' Party, led by Alan Chastanet.
09:10He actually was Prime Minister right before Prime Minister Philippe Pierre here in St. Lucia.
09:15And some of the characteristic, main characteristics of that government was a right-wing government
09:22that focused totally and primarily on the private sector in order to try to boost the economy.
09:30That Prime Minister ended his mandate in 2021 with a landlite victory.
09:36And as we were saying, the SLP is trying at this moment to revalidate for five more years.
09:43Let's recall 17 constituencies that are fighting vote to vote in order to obtain that majority.
09:50Whoever gets the majority of the 17 will elect the Prime Minister.
09:54And actually, this, where we are right now, Castries East, is the constituency where the Prime Minister is candidate himself.
10:03So that is one of the local factors taken into account.
10:07We will have more on this election.
10:09But for now, I leave you with a little bit of what we were seeing yesterday on the day before the election.
10:15So, Ale, that is all for now.
10:17You can see the package and we'll come back with contact in future news briefs.
10:22So, that is why this election is critical.
10:52Are people satisfied enough to continue with the policies that this government has?
10:59Or are they going to go back based on very wild promises that the opposition party has made?
11:06Since its landslide victory in 2021, the Philippe-Pierre government has driven economic recovery after COVID
11:12through high-impact social measures, such as implementing a national minimum wage.
11:17Our country has improved.
11:20Our country has had four years of economic growth.
11:25Our employment is the lowest ever, reaching below 10% for the first time in our country's history.
11:31We are very satisfied with the work we've done for the last four and a half years.
11:35And we are confident that the people of St. Lucia will re-elect us tomorrow.
11:40The atmosphere on the streets is electric, with caravans parading through the city center and furling party collars.
11:51We are very excited.
11:52We are ready.
11:53We are ready and we are ready.
11:54The mood is red.
11:58Well, I believe that the people will make it, the victory.
12:01I'm very happy about that.
12:03It's not stopping us.
12:05The mood is red.
12:08Like this, with feelings running high, St. Lucia waits for an outcome that will shape the years to come.
12:17Marcos da Silva, Belén de los Santos, from St. Lucia, for Tell Us Your English.
12:22We move on to other topics.
12:26The United States Congress announced the start of an investigation into the deployment ordered by President Donald Trump since last September in the Caribbean under the products of combating drug trafficking.
12:37This was reported by the House Armed Services Committee in a statement in which it said that they take seriously reports of subsequent attacks on ships allegedly transporting narcotics in the southern command region.
12:52It added that steps are being taken to compile a full report on the operation.
12:57Meanwhile, the U.S. Senate says it is aware of recent news reports and will begin vigorous oversight to determine the facts related to these circumstances.
13:14And in this context, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday he held a phone call with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro.
13:22I have supported that you had a phone call with Maduro, did you?
13:25I don't want to comment on it. The answer is yes.
13:28And can you tell us a little bit about it?
13:29No, I can't do that.
13:31Would you say it went well?
13:35I wouldn't say it went well or badly. It was a phone call, yeah.
13:39And now we go to Venezuela.
13:41The National Assembly announced that it will propose the creation of a commission to investigate the killings of Venezuelans in the Caribbean by the U.S. military.
13:48Parliament President Jorge Rodriguez called an extraordinary meeting for Monday to approve the proposal for the creation of the special commission and denounce the silence by the international community in relation to Washington's crimes.
14:04At the same time, Rodriguez called the U.S. actions murderers, arguing they cannot be considered war crimes in the absence of a declared armed conflict.
14:15Rodriguez also denounced that families of the victims have been threatened to keep them from denouncing publicly what had happened with her loved ones.
14:24The diplomatic dispute over the Ukrainian conflict entered a new phase after statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who asserted that Europe has removed itself from the negotiations.
14:49The head of the Russian diplomacy argued that European governments had undermined previous agreements, including Minsk in 2014 and 2015. As a result, they had lost influence in the current negotiations.
15:07Moscow sees any future instance as depending on the U.S. and Russia's understanding, while Ukraine is experiencing extreme internal instability.
15:16Lavrov says Merkel's recent statements show the European Union is an uninterested party in a long-standing conflict, not a guarantor.
15:27For Russia, this makes the European Union an unreliable peace mediator.

16:14Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Haqqan Fidan, stated on Sunday that his country's goal is to work towards lifting the sanctions imposed on Iran within the United States.
16:24Iran within the framework of international law.
16:27During a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Arakechi, Fidan reiterated that Ankara has consistently supported Iran in the nuclear negotiations
16:38and expressed his government's willingness to contribute in every way possible to advance this process.
16:44The Turkish Foreign Minister emphasized that the sanctions imposed on Iran for years are unfair, while Teheran is seeking their left in exchange for limiting certain nuclear activities without renouncing its right to the peaceful use of atomic energy.
17:00And now we go to the United Kingdom.
17:05Thousands of people took to the streets of London to protest against the genocide in the Gaza Strip.
17:12This demonstration coincides with the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine and is the 33rd national mobilization since October 2023.
17:24According to the organizers, the main objective of this march was to demand an end to the occupation of the Palestinian enclave and the cessation of arms sales to the Israeli army.
17:36In this regard, the marchers also criticized the British government's support for the Tel Aviv regime and demanded the breaking of diplomatic relations with Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
17:49Meanwhile, in Germany, hundreds of citizens' gatherings are now to celebrate the 58th anniversary of independence.
18:02The mobilization was a day marked by slogans of resistance and rejection of any form of foreign occupation.
18:08At the close of the event, a statement was issued underlining the determination of the Yemeni people to face any future challenge, whether military, security or social.
18:19In this context, the statement reiterates in support for the Palestinian and Lebanese causes while recalling that the commemoration of November 30 symbolizes that all forms of occupation are destined to disappear.
18:34The death toll from recent floods and landslides in three provinces of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia rose to 442 victims on Sunday.
19:00The information was provided by the National Disaster Management Agency detailing that North Sumatra has been the most affected with 217 confirmed deaths and 209 people still missing.
19:15On the other hand, the province of Ayesha reports 96 dead and 75 missing while West Sumatra has 129 dead and 118 missing.
19:28In response to this crisis, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered the mobilization of all national resources to speed up the emergency response.
19:38And given the magnitude of the emergency, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally traveled to the areas most devastated by the floods to supervise rescue efforts on site and offer direct support to families.
20:00This strategy has already affected more than 1 million people, leaving nearly 290,000 displaced.
20:08In this scenario, civil organizations and authorities are insisting on the urgency of declaring a state of national emergency to speed up the arrival of aid and guarantee essential resources for the population.
20:22And after this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
