00:03:01Arena in Killarney.
00:03:03But before that, we are delighted to have her back home tonight.

00:03:19Thanks so much, Patrick.
00:03:20Just having you here with your, with your other six guests.
00:03:21Yeah.

00:03:25Yeah.
00:03:26There you go.
00:03:27That's.
00:03:28Gold.
00:03:29Always believe in yourself.
00:03:30Thank you so much.
00:03:31Thank you so much.
00:03:32Thank you so much.
00:03:33Thank you so much.
00:03:34Thank you so much.
00:03:35Thank you so much.
00:03:36Thank you so much.
00:03:37I'm getting, I didn't tell you this out the back, but I am, I'm such a huge fan.
00:03:40Oh, yeah.
00:03:41Thanks so much, Patrick.
00:03:42Just having you here with your, with your other six guests.
00:03:46Yeah.
00:03:47My silverware.
00:03:48This is amazing.
00:03:49Yeah.
00:03:50We've also got this.
00:03:51Yeah.
00:03:52There you go.
00:03:53That's.
00:03:54Gold.
00:03:55Always believe in yourself.
00:03:59It's great to have you back for a few days.
00:04:06Literally just a couple of days.
00:04:07Yeah, absolutely.
00:04:08It's great to be back.
00:04:09I think I only go home like maybe two or three times per year now at this stage.
00:04:13And so it's always great to be back.
00:04:15There's no place like home.
00:04:16And just trying to cram in as much as you can.
00:04:18Exactly.
00:04:19Just trying to catch up with family and just see everyone.
00:04:23But it's, it's amazing.
00:04:24Amazing to be here.
00:04:25It's great to have you home.
00:04:26And I mean, after such an amazing year.
00:04:28Yeah.
00:04:29I mean, the trilogy fight in the garden with Serrano, you swapped the boxing ring for another
00:04:36ring.
00:04:37Yes.
00:04:38Congratulations on getting married.
00:04:39Thank you so much.
00:04:40Aw.
00:04:41Yes.
00:04:42There you go.
00:04:43There's a good looking couple there.
00:04:44That's your star.
00:04:45Yeah.
00:04:46Yeah.
00:04:47That's on the day, is it?
00:04:48Yeah, that is on the day.
00:04:49It's definitely been a lovely and unexpected season for me.
00:04:50I think since I was a teenager, I've been so focused on boxing.
00:04:52I left very little room for relationships.
00:04:53And honestly, even the thought of a relationship, it was out of the way for me.
00:05:08So, it's so lovely that love snuck up in later stages of my career.
00:05:13Myself and my husband, Sean, live a lovely, quiet life in Connecticut.
00:05:17And yeah, we're very happy, thank God.
00:05:19And you brought him back.
00:05:20You brought him back to Wicklow, showed him all the sights in Bray.
00:05:23What did you make of that?
00:05:24Yeah, he loved it.
00:05:25His name is Sean McCaffney, so he is very, very Irish himself.
00:05:29So.
00:05:30That's proven.
00:05:31Well, well.
00:05:32They're delighted, they're delighted with that kid.
00:05:35They're going, that's great.
00:05:36She married an Irish man and that's lovely stuff.
00:05:38He thinks he's Irish.
00:05:40You know, one of those Irish Americans who think they're Irish, but.
00:05:43Yeah.
00:05:44So, you're in a break at the moment.
00:05:47I don't mean you and Sean in a Ross and Rachel way.
00:05:50Not yet.
00:05:52You are, what is it, a champion in recess.
00:05:55Yes.
00:05:56What does that mean?
00:05:57Yeah, life in recess has been great.
00:05:59I think this is the first time I've taken a break in my whole career,
00:06:02both amateur and professional.
00:06:04So, you know, when you have 20 years of routine,
00:06:07the routine is so automatic, it's in your bones.
00:06:10So, I have to actually put an effort not to train.
00:06:12I mean, like I'm preparing for a fight.
00:06:15But the time to relax and reflect, my family has been amazing.
00:06:18And so, it's been a really lovely time for me.
00:06:21I mean, when you just read the stuff that you've done for the first time,
00:06:24you know, you set records, you make history all the time.
00:06:27You've been making history from the get-go.
00:06:29You know, the first sanctioned bout for a female fighter here in Ireland.
00:06:32That was back in 2001.
00:06:34I mean, you were just a kid.
00:06:37Yeah, only 15.
00:06:38You were only 15.
00:06:39I think we got a little, have we got a little pic?
00:06:41There it is.
00:06:42I look a bit chubby back then, don't I?
00:06:44Yeah.
00:06:45So, that was the first sanctioned female fight in Ireland?
00:06:50That's right, yeah.
00:06:51What are your memories of that?
00:06:52Yeah, I mean, I think I've lived three different lives since then,
00:06:55to be honest.
00:06:56I felt like the London Olympics was an era,
00:06:58the Rio Olympics was a separate era,
00:07:00and then my pro career was a whole other era,
00:07:02so a lot has happened since 2001.
00:07:04I can't really remember too much from it,
00:07:06but I knew even as a 15-year-old that it was a very significant night
00:07:10to be involved in the first ever female sanctioned fight.
00:07:13And even as a 15-year-old,
00:07:16me and my family were fighting hard against the system
00:07:19to get female boxing sanctioned,
00:07:21and we were going on TV and radio to make her case.
00:07:24And eventually, I had that fight as a 15-year-old
00:07:28in a national stadium against Alana Murphy,
00:07:30who I still remain great friends with to this day.
00:07:33She also went on to have a very successful amateur career,
00:07:37so a big shout-out to Alana.
00:07:39She also made history that night.
00:07:42But that was the start of women's boxing in this country, I suppose.
00:07:47You know, I was thinking about this during the week,
00:07:49and there are athletes who change their sport,
00:07:52and there are athletes who just change sport,
00:07:55and you are in that second category.
00:07:57You pretty much single-handedly put women's boxing
00:08:01into the Olympics.
00:08:03You know, tell us how that happened.
00:08:05Well, thank you.
00:08:06Yeah, that was such a long journey, to be honest.
00:08:08I think I had been campaigning for years
00:08:10to get women's boxing included in the Olympic Games.
00:08:13And you were flying around doing different fights
00:08:15for different people to try to prove to them the authorities.
00:08:18Exactly, yeah.
00:08:19There was real promise that women's boxing
00:08:21was going to be included in the Beijing Olympics,
00:08:23and that was a real dream for a while.
00:08:25And I still remember the day when my parents told me
00:08:28that I wasn't going to be included in the Beijing Olympics,
00:08:30and I was absolutely devastated.
00:08:32That was probably the closest I've ever been to quitting the sport.
00:08:35But anyway, I pushed on, and we tried to knock the floor down
00:08:39for the London Olympics, and I was invited by the Olympic Committee
00:08:43to the Boxing Chicago in a special showcase fight
00:08:48just to assess the sport.
00:08:49And a few days before that fight,
00:08:51a member from the Olympic Committee came up to me and said,
00:08:54your performance will determine whether women's boxing
00:08:57will be included in the Olympic Games or not.
00:08:59So talk about pressure.
00:09:00No pressure. Wow.
00:09:02I felt like the whole fate of the sport was lying on my shoulders.
00:09:05I was basically fighting for the future of women's boxing.
00:09:08Thankfully, it all went well.
00:09:11I won the fight, but more importantly,
00:09:13they were so impressed with the standard
00:09:15that they included it in the Olympic Games.
00:09:17And the dream was alive at last.
00:09:19Can I be a fanboy?
00:09:21Can we watch just the result of this?
00:09:23Here we go. This is...
00:09:25The winner by a score of ten points to eight,
00:09:28and the Olympic champion in the ring,
00:09:31Kenny Taylor, is the champion of the Olympic Games.
00:09:40I mean, where does that sit?
00:09:42You know, at that time, you were still amateur.
00:09:45That was the pinnacle.
00:09:46You had no idea you were going to go on and change the world
00:09:48in professional boxing.
00:09:49Yeah.
00:09:50So where does that sit now in everything you've done?
00:09:52I still would probably mark it maybe as a top.
00:09:58Maybe. I'm not too sure.
00:09:59I mean, that was such a special moment.
00:10:01That was my childhood dream coming to pass.
00:10:03I sacrificed so much of my childhood to achieve that dream.
00:10:07And it was just so special as well.
00:10:10I felt like every seat in the arena
00:10:13that I was filled by an Irish person.
00:10:15I really felt at the back end of the whole country.
00:10:17And, yeah, just to see the tricolor race,
00:10:21and to hear Ron Levine playing throughout the stadium,
00:10:25I get goosebumps so much.
00:10:27And I was like, wow, I can't believe that.
00:10:28This is my life.
00:10:29It's absolutely incredible.
00:10:31Thank God.
00:10:32It was absolutely amazing.
00:10:34You know, sometimes you look at athletes at you
00:10:37and you kind of think that it's just going to go
00:10:39in one direction to travel.
00:10:40And with every career, there's highs and lows.
00:10:42Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:43And then, you know, Rio followed London.
00:10:46You know, that was a different experience.
00:10:48You didn't have your dad in your corner.
00:10:50And, like, what was it like going into that Olympics?
00:10:53You know, your dad, obviously your trainer,
00:10:55and him not being there.
00:10:56Yeah, I mean, I think there was a lot going on in family life.
00:11:01And that's family, isn't it?
00:11:02And it can be both, just both complicated and beautiful
00:11:08all at the same time.
00:11:10And I don't really have a vivid recollection
00:11:12of how it felt going into that fight.
00:11:15But that's probably because you can't allow your mind to go there.
00:11:18You just have to focus on what's in front of you.
00:11:20But there's definitely moments along the way
00:11:22where I miss my dad.
00:11:23I miss having him in the corner.
00:11:25But I thank God that I was able to bounce back from that.
00:11:31And I look at the Rio Olympics.
00:11:33It's funny how God can work all things for God
00:11:35because that disappointment which almost crushed me
00:11:39was probably the door to the greatest season of my life.
00:11:42I wouldn't have turned pro if it wasn't for that loss.
00:11:48You know, you started out with your dad in your corner.
00:11:53Your dad's not, you know, in the corner anymore.
00:11:55You sent him a lovely message.
00:11:57He posted a lovely message to wish him happy birthday.
00:12:01Yeah.
00:12:02You guys seem to be closer than ever again.
00:12:04Yeah.
00:12:05And you had him at the Serrano fight.
00:12:06How special was that to have him there for making history?
00:12:09Yeah, listen, I stepped away from my dad as a coach.
00:12:13But he never stopped being my dad.
00:12:17And we have been good for many years, to be honest.
00:12:20And yeah, I think he's obviously, my trust in him as a coach is second to him.
00:12:27He's the one who taught me how to box after all.
00:12:30And to have him over in Connecticut for a few weeks,
00:12:32helping me prepare for the Serrano fight,
00:12:34was nearly like a full circle moment.
00:12:36And it was so special to have him there.
00:12:39You know, we're talking about your dad.
00:12:42I met your mum out there, Bridget.
00:12:44And I know that she's been a huge support to you throughout your career as well.
00:12:48Yeah, honestly, it's hard to put it into words.
00:12:51She's been the one constant, you know, through all the ups and downs of my life and my career.
00:12:55She's devoted all of her life for me to help me achieve my dreams.
00:13:00The one thing I love about my mum is that she's probably the most selfless person that you'll ever meet.
00:13:04She just lays her life down for her whole family, for her kids.
00:13:08And I think we'd all be lost without her.
00:13:10She's the absolute best.
00:13:11I know that faith is absolutely in there as, you know, a cornerstone of who you are
00:13:17and what makes you a fighter as well.
00:13:19How important is it to you?
00:13:20Yeah, it's the most important thing to me.
00:13:23It doesn't just help me in my fights.
00:13:25I think it helps me with everything.
00:13:27It helps me make sense of the world.
00:13:28It is a worldview after all.
00:13:30And I view the world through the lens that God is real,
00:13:33that Jesus is a real historical figure who lived, who breathed, who died and rose again.
00:13:39I believe he's the greatest of all time.
00:13:42And, yeah, I'm getting emotional here talking about my fate, but it's...
00:13:52It's just, it's a foundation of my life.
00:13:54It's the most essential part of my life.
00:14:02Whenever you become the success that you have, you have to travel, don't you?
00:14:06Yeah.
00:14:07And, you know, you just have to go to the places where you can fight and where the deal is and where the money is.
00:14:12How much did it mean to you to actually come back to Ireland and fight here?
00:14:17Oh, so important.
00:14:18I had to bring big time boxing back and it had been so long since we had a big fight here.
00:14:24We had the likes of, you know, Steve Collins versus Eubank, Bernard Dunne versus Cordova in Dublin.
00:14:31These were huge nights and it really felt like Ireland needed another night like that.
00:14:36And the Irish people have travelled all over the world to watch me fight.
00:14:40And they went to the UK, Boston, New York, Dallas.
00:14:43But not everybody can travel. It's so expensive.
00:14:47And I'm so grateful for people spending their hard-earned money to come and support me throughout my whole career.
00:14:52But it was absolutely amazing to bring a big show back here to Ireland.
00:14:56And obviously the first night didn't go to plan, but we got there in the second attempt.
00:15:02No, look, you definitely did get there, you know, but I was thinking that that first night, you know, and that defeat, which then you came back and put right.
00:15:12For that to happen here in Ireland, it was probably the right place for it to be because you were at home and the love was still there.
00:15:19Yeah, absolutely. It was so important to get that win back. And that loss was so hard.
00:15:25I think that the fight was on Saturday. I think I had the Sunday Monday off and I was back in the gym on Tuesday preparing for that rematch.
00:15:32Wow.
00:15:33I was like a dog with a bone for those six months. It was the longest six months, I think, of my career.
00:15:38But I was so determined that night. I think I would have walked through a wall to get that victory.
00:15:44And I was just thanking God really that I had a chance of rematch and I had a chance of redemption.
00:15:50And redemption was mine that night, thank God.
00:15:53Thank you. You're a hero too.
00:16:01You are a hero to so many people.
00:16:04Ella Thompson, whenever you were on the toy show five years ago, this is young Ella and you.
00:16:11Look what that means to Ella back then.
00:16:14Ella's a wee bit bigger now.
00:16:16Yeah.
00:16:17She's actually here.
00:16:18Yeah.
00:16:19So Ella, what does it mean to this woman, what she's done and how she inspires you?
00:16:27Katie is just such an inspiration to me and so many young girls across the world for what she's done with women's boxing.
00:16:33She's broke so many boundaries and set so many stepping stones in place for me and so many other girls to follow.
00:16:39And I just find her so inspirational.
00:16:41And your worth ethic is incredible.
00:16:45I'm trying to follow it outside of the ring as well as inside the ring.
00:16:50I'm doing the evensert now and I'm trying to follow your studies, like everything while I'm studying.
00:16:54I'm like, okay, will Katie get up?
00:16:56I'm like, no, I'm going to do study now.
00:16:59And I'm trying to like balance it all.
00:17:01And I just find you so inspirational.
00:17:03Thanks, Ella.
00:17:04Ella herself is a multiple time Irish champion now.
00:17:11So she deserves a bit of credit also.
00:17:13You're doing fantastic.
00:17:14Just so proud of you, Ella.
00:17:23You're doing incredibly well.
00:17:25And you're also such a fantastic person as well, which is even more important than the success in the ring.
00:17:30You're unbelievable.
00:17:32But yeah, just to see girls like this carry on the legacy, it means so much.
00:17:36This is the most satisfying part about this career is just seeing girls like this take off the torch
00:17:43and actually carry it on.
00:17:45I think I've worked so hard.
00:17:47It's such a privilege to be able to carry that torch on to someone like Ella.
00:17:52Now you see some of these fights where there's a boxer against somebody who's not a boxer
00:17:57or a celebrity who's trying to be a boxer.
00:17:59What do you make of these things like when you see something like a Jake Paul versus an Anthony Joshua?
00:18:04I can't believe that fight's happening.
00:18:06No.
00:18:07It's crazy.
00:18:08I don't think Jake Paul's going to either when the bell goes.
00:18:12Yeah.
00:18:13Jake definitely gets a lot of stick because he hasn't got a boxing background.
00:18:17But he has got an entertainment background and professional boxing is the entertainment business.
00:18:22And this is why he's able to get these big fights over the line.
00:18:26He's done remarkably well over the last few years.
00:18:28And look at the fights he's involved in.
00:18:30Look what he's done for the sport.
00:18:31You have to give him credit for that.
00:18:33So you think it's okay, those type of fights?
00:18:36I think he's probably going to get knocked out.
00:18:38But I give him, I think, fair play to him for actually taking the fight.

00:22:54we were ptsb proud sponsor of the late late show
00:23:02ptsb proud sponsor of the late late show
00:23:12welcome back folks to the little it show
00:23:24my next guest is a legend of national hunt racing who made history as the first female
00:23:31jockey to win the grand national and the gold cup she retired this year after over 500 winners
00:23:37but still inspires people far beyond racing and tonight she is here to honor someone whose
00:23:43legacy continues to inspire her every day would you please welcome rachel blackmore
00:23:54oh welcome to the show the last time you were here you were still in the saddle you've hung up the
00:24:07spurs how's retirement treating you good yeah it's uh very different um life is very different now but
00:24:13i'm really enjoying it and i obviously very much miss riding like it was such a big part of my life
00:24:18i miss the competitive side of it i simply just miss riding a horse in a race you know that's that's
00:24:23a great buzz so i miss that side of it but uh yeah i'm finding my way now and i'm uh enjoying my new
00:24:29life look i know that you hate this type of stuff i know that you don't like the attention but
00:24:33cheltenham hall of fame i mean that just must have been amazing yeah such an incredible honor when you
00:24:38when you see the list of names that you're that you're on it with it was just an unbelievable yeah
00:24:43and well deserved thank you um when you retire you kind of you know do you start looking back i
00:24:49mean are there some highlights that you're able to look back on at this stage yeah it's it's lovely
00:24:54you know you you do get the opportunity to kind of take it all in and like i was just so lucky in my
00:24:59career um you know at blue tires and that was a massive horse for me you know he's my first winner
00:25:04in cheltenham and won the gold cup but the two kind of standout days that i always kind of spring to
00:25:10mind are manila times winning the grand national that was unbelievable we all remember that day
00:25:15yeah and um you know henry trained a one two that day so an incredible day for him and uh then i had
00:25:20um yeah another day that just always is on the forefront of my mind is honeysuckle's last win
00:25:25in 2023 and that was just so special for so many different reasons for so many reasons uh trained
00:25:32by henry de bromhead uh there you go there's there's that moment it was uh it was a very
00:25:40very emotional and a very very special day henry of course lost his son jack in a riding accident the
00:25:46year before um so much emotion uh in that win yeah it was um it's just a day you know what i felt that
00:25:55day was just something i've never felt before or never experienced before um you know so honeysuckle
00:26:01was this mare of a lifetime really for me and for henry you know uh you always hope you'll come
00:26:06across something like her she won two champion hurdles she was unbelievable um she was unbeaten
00:26:11uh then jack had his accident and that season she got beaten twice uh she was going to cheltenham
00:26:18for having her last ever run and uh yeah i just i don't think i've ever wanted to win a race more
00:26:23than i did that day and uh she did she won and it was just incredible the people there that day the
00:26:30crowd you know walking back into the parade ring like just it felt powerful um you know everyone
00:26:37was cheering for you know for for for henry for jack um you know for heather um for mia and georgia
00:26:46his two sisters you know it was so much more than just a horse race it was just a very very special
00:26:50day i mean i can tell even now just you know reliving this you know it's so so hard you know henry
00:26:57you know losing jack what type of wee boy was jack oh jack was brilliant yeah he was uh he was an
00:27:03amazing kid um he was he's so so missed obviously uh but he was he was so kind and loyal and you know
00:27:12he was great crack as well and uh he'd lots of a lot of fun inside him uh he loved being outside he
00:27:18loved animals uh you know he loved his dogs and he loved farming um and obviously horses and ponies
00:27:24were a massive part of his life and um yeah he had a passion for it tell us a wee bit about the jack
00:27:30to prom ahead equine center i know this is something that henry and the family have tried to help other
00:27:37kids and to keep jack's memories alive yeah so um the jack to prom ahead equine center is in uh drum
00:27:43condor at the child vision campus um so child vision are a fantastic charity that work with uh children
00:27:49with uh visual impairments and other additional needs and they provide so many services for them
00:27:54you know they i was only reading up more on on on what they do like i didn't even realize they
00:27:59they produce books in braille um any school books that kids can't read they'll produce them for them
00:28:04in braille or in larger font you know they've a residential care um they're training other people
00:28:10to to provide the services they do in loads of different parts of the country and then they
00:28:15obviously have the equine assisted um uh equine assisted activities side of it as well and that's
00:28:21where the jack to brom head center comes in so uh they used to be at the mercy of the weather which
00:28:26as you know in ireland isn't great uh so you know they'd have to cancel a lot of classes or a lot of
00:28:31sessions in the in the winter with the weather so now they have a beautiful new indoor equine therapy
00:28:37center which they can use all year round they can provide so many more sessions for kids um to enjoy
00:28:43the benefits of equine assisted activities and what i love about it is i think it's going to be
00:28:49this little hub that is going to be filled with so many amazing memories for so many kids and
00:28:55working with horses and like jack loved horses and love ponies and love that side of life so
00:29:01i think he'd get a massive buzz at annoying you know there's a big legacy there with his name
00:29:06and so many kids are enjoying that now and so many other kids are are benefiting absolutely yeah so
00:29:13someone who has benefited from the services at child vision uh is here tonight uh we're delighted to
00:29:20bring her out she is an absolute pocket rocket please welcome uh cara and crea
00:29:26oh

00:30:24about crea uh we can see the bag of energy and the bag of fun she is how lively she how lively she is
00:30:31how has child vision and uh their services helped this lady oh so child vision has been life-changing
00:30:38for us um so obviously parents of any um rare genetic disorder children they know how scary it is
00:30:49give me a high five oh let's sit over here will we sit over here let's do that yeah here we go
00:30:57brilliant yeah that doesn't need to stay there that's fine oh you want to stay here okay what
00:31:02we're gonna do here crea we're gonna have a little look at you out of child vision on a horsey do you
00:31:07want to have a look at this yeah see that screen over there have a little look this is you this is
00:31:14you on the pony oh look how cool is that you to put the rings on the pole so that's teaching her
00:31:24cord hand-eye coordination there and look at her core stability which she didn't have before equine
00:31:30and it's just and then the same routine every day yeah uh korea's gonna have a little break there
00:31:38she's gonna uh have a little drink and while she's doing that we're gonna tell you that child vision
00:31:41is one of the many charities that receive funding from the toy show appeal uh rachel i mean how important
00:31:48is the funding uh for for child vision i mean these charities just cannot do it without the funding
00:31:53yeah it's massive um and i think the toy show appeal in general it helps so many different charities
00:31:58all across the country and you know uh speaking to the child vision team i know the impact that that
00:32:04the funding they got last year is after having on their services um and you know they're just one of a
00:32:10number that that have benefited so uh it's just phenomenal you can see firsthand the the benefits
00:32:16that that that this funding brings so it's it's brilliant she wouldn't be the little girl you see

00:37:33you say that aren't there you say that i'm telling you it's 10 well maybe like eight and a half maybe
00:37:38an eight and a half i was about to ask you i mean you guys are you all set for toy show absolutely yeah
00:37:43this is going to actually blues second toy show and blake's third we're so excited i hope they're
00:37:47going to stay away a state no stay awake for that and look at this is you ryan and the cuties we are
00:37:53so excited we're preparing for it and blake now i understand everything so she will be so into it
00:37:58she loves dancing she loves singing so i can't wait to see what you're going to bring patrick oh my god
00:38:03yeah it's amazing it's amazing like next week next week regrets so look we got to talk about this this
00:38:10is the new book little arty and the happy dance uh it this is fun it's really really cute but there's
00:38:18like there's an important message in there too isn't there right at the heart of this absolutely do you
00:38:22know what it's so funny when you told me i'm going to write a kid's books before i became parents i would
00:38:26have laughed i was like me what what's happening here but when you're becoming parents your perspective and
00:38:31purpose on life change and since we had blake obviously people send books every day you buy books
00:38:36and kids love books so they get entertained and blake says they want she loves book book uh books
00:38:42and then i remember when i start talking to uh vinicia from gail publisher she trusted in me she
00:38:49believed in me and we start talking and i said you know what there's some books out there that i can't
00:38:53find for blake i would love something different but i have to research for it it took me two years
00:38:58party to do that i know my friends don't keep laughing two years to write this book i was like
00:39:02yes creative people takes time guys you have to actually put things together so but i didn't want
00:39:07to be another book out there just randomly so i didn't want another monkey doing the dance or the
00:39:12giraffe doing the dance so little arty i was like you know what's no brainer let's have the big arty going
00:39:17to little arty and spread joy and happiness through dance because dancing is good for the soul
00:39:21i'm not a fitness person i love dancing you know since i can remember so i wanted something that
00:39:27everybody can relate you know what's amazing this is number one and i'm thinking this is about
00:39:32little arty when you were a little arty yeah i mean did you ever remotely dream that you would have
00:39:38a number one book as a never never in my entire life do you know what it's so weird because when i
00:39:43was little arty my father was burning our books because obviously we had to burn things to stay warm
00:39:49and i would have never believed like when i was like 11 from 8 till 12 years old that i one day i'm
00:39:54going to have a number one book for kids to spray joy and happiness because because that's you know
00:40:00you have to have a paper to start i remember one day it really struck with me stuck with me my father
00:40:05came to my room took my bag took all my books from school because you don't need the school bags
00:40:10anywhere or the the books he took and then went and i was like what are you doing and he started burning
00:40:16one by one i was like that's my book for school said you don't need it you're not going to school
00:40:20anymore so it's it's i mean Patrick so much has happened i've been so blessed in Ireland since
00:40:26i came here so much is happening and i'm taking everything as it comes i'm not taking anything
00:40:30for granted and now after all these years to have a number one book that everybody literally embraces
00:40:35so incredibly i'm so grateful it's sorry i'm shaking it's it's just insane you know you're talking
00:40:42about your dad and and you know that childhood in Armenia and what you guys had to go through
00:40:50um you know we both lost our dads whenever we were 16. yes and so you know for you i kind of feel all
00:40:59the stuff that you have done because you have always worked hard and dreamed big and fought for
00:41:05what you wanted you know was the death of your dad was that like a starting pistol for you
00:41:09to not to take things for granted and try to seize the day i think the death he was 45 he was my age
00:41:15when he passed away 1996. it's like the way i explain it's like a chip was changed in my back
00:41:21the chip that Arthur was for 16 years somebody changed and i said i'm gonna live my life to the
00:41:26fullest my dad was 45 he was doing everything obviously we were refugees asylum seekers in Belgium
00:41:31we didn't know what the future holds for us and when he died it's like something changed and i said
00:41:37i'm gonna live my life to the fullest i remember he saved couple of frank Belgium at the time in a
00:41:42cupboard and that was maybe 100 euro at the time now and me my mom and my sister find it and that was
00:41:48his dream to go to see as an Armenian that's your dream to go to see Eiffel Tower and he never saw it
00:41:55so because i know it's silly thing right silly but as a refugee you just 100 euro in your hands what
00:42:00we're gonna do and my mom said we're gonna spend everything and my dad never go to travel my dad never
00:42:05got to see anything and the Eiffel Tower he had a picture that one day he's gonna make it and he
00:42:10never did and that was the changing point in my life i'm gonna do everything and i was selfish i
00:42:16moved on my own 16 years old went to brussels left my mom my sister because i just want to survive
00:42:22i said i am not gonna stay here i'm gonna survive i don't know what my future holds if we're gonna stay
00:42:27in Belgium we're gonna send back to Armenia but i was like nothing will stop me nobody who comes for me
00:42:33nobody who's gonna say you're not good enough i don't care my dad wants to do something he never
00:42:38did it and my dad gave me that push to survive in life
00:42:52you know you mentioned your mom there as well you know i know that
00:42:55what are you doing this to me it's just i just love i just love the journey that you've been on
00:43:02and i love how grateful you are for it and i know that you know your mom is so proud of what you've
00:43:07done my mom until these days can't comprehend everything i do she's like who are you what's
00:43:13happening to you when i said i'm writing a book she started crying i was like you okay i'm still here
00:43:19it's all good it's like no i'm crying what's next for you i said i don't know the first time she came to
00:43:24dancing with us what did she make of it dancing oh my god she she couldn't talk she came to the
00:43:28dressing room start crying was like oh my god mother don't cry everybody's here let's say hello
00:43:32everybody how you doing i'm not gonna stop her to cry it's just she's so proud she's so proud that
00:43:38she's going back to france and she doesn't have many friends like i said we are the three musketeers me
00:43:43my sister my mom we are the three musketeers we survived and i'm still gonna go further more more
00:43:49and more because nothing will stop me and our incredible family
00:44:00you have another musketeer on the judging panel uh of dancing with the stars odi mabusi
00:44:06is this i'm thinking this is bad news for brian i i kind of think yourself and karen and odi could be
00:44:12that could be bad news do you know what's happened when we're doing the shoot to announce oti i said
00:44:18brian redmond god help you he said why i said not one not two but three loud crazy
00:44:26like massive characters going to be at the panel nobody's going to hear you anymore oh my god
00:44:33but it's true he's such a teddy bear i know he's the body i call him the body b but he's such teddy
00:44:38bear he's so tall i absolutely adore the man but i think the dynamic is going to be elevated it's
00:44:43going to be incredible every time i say oti i want to say oti oti oti like every time talking to her
00:44:48but should we keep sending tiktoks together and i said oti are we going to be working or doing tiktoks
00:44:54he said who cares about work let's just dance together let's just have fun let's just have fun
00:44:58that's what it's all about dancing it's all about having fun and the energy is going to be incredible
00:45:02of course we said goodbye to lorraine you know i've been so privileged you know what we're talking about
00:45:06dreams never in million years i dreamt i'm going to be sitting on a panel judging dancing as a dancer
00:45:12it's like a dream that you can dream but it's not achievable especially for a foreigner english is my
00:45:18fifth language when i got the phone call after all the auditions and i got it and i sat there 9th of
00:45:23january 2022 and my life in ireland changed like it's in her like it's not possible it's not possible
00:45:30so now i'm embracing every single minute of it and when i had tina with lorraine and brian in 2021
00:45:35this summer i'm very good with date they were telling me what to do what's happening and
00:45:39everything and you know what i said i'm not feeling any issues i'm going to be arthur gorillian
00:45:43other people go love me or hate me i'm just going to embrace it and go for it and the rest is history
00:45:48and the rest is history you're going to stay with us of course yeah okay uh arthur's first children's book
00:45:56little arty and the happy dance is out now give it up one more time for arthur gorillian
00:46:08my next guest is an actor a writer an advocate and a podcaster who has lit up our screens on the
00:46:14emmy award-winning series the good place and is now lighting up our festive season with our new
00:46:19netflix movie and merry little xmas her new podcast is called wrong turns we are delighted
00:46:24she's taking a right one to come to see us tonight please welcome jameela jameel
00:46:33welcome to the show message what a summer thank you sorry oh sorry that's all good
00:46:54it's all good you're in ireland we can roll with that i'm nervous i've never done telly here
00:47:00before i love ireland look i mean the whole thing is chill nobody cares i'm sitting next to me you're
00:47:05sitting next to me that's also are you hot i'm so hot i'm sweating like prince andrew
00:47:17i am delighted to see you again in the flesh i have watched you from afar for a number of years
00:47:24slowly but surely taking over the world uh i don't know about that i would say you you kind
00:47:30of have been how how are you i'm good i'm good i'm amazed by uh anything i've ever achieved so
00:47:38i never expect anything to go well so i've just been delighted that i'm still in this industry i
00:47:43expected to be booted out about 16 years ago but somehow i'm still clinging on i would say more than
00:47:49clinging on uh you know you're taking over the world you're taking over christmas with this new
00:47:53movie arthur has seen the movie adored i loved it i didn't even know you were coming here i know i
00:47:58was doing it me and my husband watched it we were encrusted in it you're adorable i think he's so nice
00:48:04she doesn't remember but we'll go way way back when you were hosting a long time ago yeah
00:48:08very long time i was a baby yes oh my god i was retiring she was only starting she was the new whole thing
00:48:14yes i was retiring you were the new house very long retirement no i was actually retiring as a
00:48:21dancer oh right right right i'm a different person now yeah so so our movie critic uh amazing you have
00:48:27to watch a merry thank you a merry little xmas okay can you tell us a little bit about it yeah it's a
00:48:33it's your classic christmas much needed rom-com where you have the guy and the girl and they've broken
00:48:39up and it's bigger they're about to spend their first christmas together as a divorced couple
00:48:43and i am the nightmare new girlfriend really has come in to shake things up okay you are uh you're
00:48:52in this movie with alicia silverstone yeah and melissa joan hart yeah did you watch clarissa explains
00:48:57at all or sabrina the teenage witch here there we go and clueless of course so i took the movie
00:49:03without even reading the script i was like this could be a porno i don't care um because i was so
00:49:09excited to just meet these two women it's netflix go with it yeah i do netflix's first porno um yeah
00:49:17i think we have a clip i i think it's up the correct movie yeah it's not a porno um sadly hey let's see
00:49:25let's see uh so so this is a scene where uh i'm meeting alicia silverstone for the first time she
00:49:31thinks i'm a very different woman that she's accidentally seen on instagram who makes butter
00:49:35for a living but i'm in fact your city slick new york girlie okay here we go oh my god oh my god
00:49:47who is that kate kate kate i'm ready for this hi kate i'm tess oh everest told me so much about you
00:49:57hello do you happen to sculpt butter uh skull um no well not this uh outfit anyway i'm aware i'm a
00:50:08little overdressed in a hardware store in my defense i was on office zoom and then this guy just had to
00:50:13drag me out christmas decoration shopping
00:50:22now i wanted to i didn't want her to be the bully and the villain in that film i feel like we've seen
00:50:29that film a hundred times so she's achingly nice which is so much more annoying you want you want
00:50:34the new the new person to be a rotter yes yeah so you're not playing type no no um we have to talk
00:50:41about the good place with kristen bell and with ted danson this huge huge show loads of awards it
00:50:51almost didn't happen i actually didn't know this story oh yeah um i was not planning on ever being
00:50:57an actor ever because that's just not a talent that i felt like i had um some people might still agree
00:51:04uh but i was retiring i was 30 to calm down but i was retiring at 30 and i uh i was telling all my
00:51:13agents i didn't want to do it anymore and everyone was arguing with me and we were in this this room
00:51:17that's kind of like a goldfish bowl where everything's made of glass so you can see out uh
00:51:22into the main foyer so someone walks in while i'm talking and my speech starts to slow down because i
00:51:28i recognize her and i'm like wait where do i recognize her from and then i start to realize
00:51:33oh god she looks exactly like my school bully from when i was a teenager but it couldn't be her because
00:51:39why would she be in los angeles on the same day at the same place in the same agency she's not in this
00:51:43industry i hope so i just kind of move the thought away and then she sees me and stops and slowly raises
00:51:51her hand and i realize it is my school bully so i jump underneath the table i'm 30 but really i'm
00:51:58still 12 and we're all still 12. uh and i uh have a panic attack so my manager pulls me back out she's
00:52:04like what's going on i explained to all of them this is my school bully who terrorized me who destroyed
00:52:08my confidence for my whole life and she's like what do you want us to do do you want us to get her
00:52:12fired and i'm like no that's bad karma kind of yes but no ultimately uh and she said well what do you
00:52:17need and i was like it would really help if you could give me a round of applause and so they gave
00:52:27me a standing ovation in this glass bowl room that she could hear and see and everyone was looking at
00:52:33me and they're like congratulations on your nomination i was unemployed didn't have a visa didn't
00:52:40have any money as i was walking out and i just sort of flicked my hair past her and didn't even
00:52:45acknowledge her as i walked out with my fake nomination and my my standing ovation and afterwards
00:52:49i went to the car park and i was like that was so cool of you i will do anything you want me to
00:52:54do as a thank you for that and they were like will you just go to this one audition it's for a show
00:52:59called the good place just one time and if you don't get it we will never ask you to act again
00:53:03and then i got it and now i'm an actor oh my god that's so good yeah that does not justify school
00:53:14bullying no it does not no so obviously with that show you moved to la um however i know that you are
00:53:21probably the most on la person that there is you she had dinner with larry david and you didn't know
00:53:28that makes me sound very early but yeah well no you didn't whenever you didn't know who larry david was
00:53:32no well because i'd seen him on saturday night live and i thought he was a bernie sanders impersonator
00:53:39so i just i hadn't seen any of his shows they weren't on channel four that's all i had so i didn't
00:53:46know who he was so he thought i was joking and so for the first hour of us talking he thinks we're
00:53:51doing a very long bit of me genuinely wanting to know how he's made it at this age um so he thought
00:53:57you were pretending he thought i was just yeah really taking the joke far he found me very amusing
00:54:02because of this and then by the end when we understood i was serious we were now friends
00:54:06and uh and then sometimes they love that when you don't know them just actually being natural
00:54:10instead of like be i want to be an actress i want to do this i want to do that and i ended up marrying him
00:54:15as in not like that like what i officiated i thought you were already married no i officiated his
00:54:20his wedding to his wonderful wife yeah last year you ended up on the vogue legends cover sure and
00:54:27uh well i think they thought i was priyanka shopper i think they still don't know okay like loria so
00:54:33so so this is with uh this is with oprah with miley cyrus uh jane fonda no i just this is you
00:54:41just my my normal group of friends yeah no i mean i just assumed that on these things that you can't
00:54:47get everybody in the same room in the same day so that was photoshop no everyone was there we shot it in
00:54:52five to ten minutes i think and everyone was in position everyone behaved and just got in got out
00:54:59no egos just did what we were told and uh and it was the craziest moment of my life i mean it's
00:55:06hilarious yeah but i mean being on the cover of vogue you're someone who you know will happily take on
00:55:11the beauty industry you have been very vocal about the stuff that's wrong with it um that's something
00:55:17that you're you're really passionate about so i just think women are under enough enough risk and
00:55:22under enough pressure and there's enough pain in the existence born from inside of our bodies for
00:55:27us to then feel this need to then pay for more pain and to have to mutilate ourselves for a societal
00:55:34patriarchal standard that just changes every two years anyway so by the time you meet the standard if
00:55:39you even do it changes again it's just this perpetual loop to keep our eye off the ball to stop us from
00:55:44growing our lives and our happiness and our orgasm count you know i'm just sick of it i'm sick of it
00:55:50i want our freedom back they asked me to behave myself on the show and i don't think i've done a very
00:56:02good job i mean i think you've done just fine i i really do the you've had to go to some ridiculous
00:56:08measures uh on your social media to get the message out you've taken on the algorithm tell us how
00:56:14you've done that do i have to i mean you don't if you don't sometimes when i need to because i'm
00:56:21you know i'm vocally i've been talking a lot about what's happening in palestine i'm very political
00:56:27about everything i talk about global politics i talk about america and i've been suppressed by the
00:56:33meta algorithm heavily for doing so and so sometimes when i need to break through the algorithm to get an
00:56:38important message out i shake my breasts at the camera and it works like a charm every time i have
00:56:47a bikini on but it is not my finest hour i am not the doctor my parents wanted me to be but it's for
00:56:55a good cause and you're getting the message out yeah yeah i bury i literally bury the news article
00:57:04in the bottom of the screen so that someone can see what's been going on in the world okay uh talk to
00:57:10me about the podcast wrong turns uh you've taken one or two i've taken many wrong turns yeah i started
00:57:17a comedy disaster podcast that was anti-inspiration pro commiseration i'm sick of being inspired i'm sick
00:57:22of everyone trying to inspire me all the time i'm i'm i'm done with having a silver lining shoved up
00:57:27my ass aren't you yes thank you inspiring you then huh nobody what's getting inspired i don't want
00:57:33inspiration i'm i'm overdosed on it so i decided to make a comedy disaster podcast where me and my
00:57:38favorite funny people i would love for you to come on i would love for you to come on um where they tell
00:57:44me their most humiliating moments where there's no happy ending no filthy pun intended no innuendo
00:57:50stop it yes and so i uh i wanted to create that as a space so it's a comedy disaster podcast
00:57:56called wrong turns with jameena jamil and it's celebrating all of my especially many many four
00:58:02cups many many uh four cups you say uh however i feel that there are a lot more right turns than wrong
00:58:08turns and i think i i i think things are heading in the right direction yeah i can't do your podcast mine
00:58:14was all the right turns why don't you start your own bloody podcast
00:58:29podcast wrong turns is available where you can get your podcast uh arthur's podcast uh that's gonna be
00:58:34coming soon coming soon we're going against each other uh a merry little x-mas is out now on netflix
00:58:42ladies and gentlemen uh jamila jamil

01:04:18Making his Late Late debut
01:04:20Would you please welcome Shane Todd
01:04:22Welcome to the show, it's great to have you here, fine and well you're looking
01:04:42And it's nice to have a genuine Hollywood star here
01:04:46This is it
01:04:46This is it, yes
01:04:48Yeah
01:04:49Hollywood, County Down
01:04:50The real one, yeah
01:04:52Yeah
01:04:53The real one
01:04:54Uh, you and I, um, we, we go back a little way
01:04:58We do, uh, when I was first starting stand-up you, uh, gave me a bit of a break
01:05:02I opened for you on tour
01:05:03I was in my early 20s and just started stand-up and I remember like it was great because it's such a moment for me because I grew up watching you and
01:05:10You just had two things you said to join the tour
01:05:12You were like just give me a 15-minute set and call me daddy that's all you said
01:05:16And I
01:05:16And I've been asking you to do the same ever since
01:05:23So so me having you on here does this feel like a nepo baby moment?
01:05:27I think so, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean people genuinely did think that though because yeah, this was going back maybe
01:05:3413 years or so
01:05:35Yes
01:05:35You were doing a theatre tour, um, I was pretty new to stand-up and I looked very very young
01:05:40At the time I was in my early 20s and we were doing the millennium forum in Derry and I did 15 I died on my arse every night of that tour
01:05:47That's not true
01:05:49Well there was Lisburn was good there was one I remember it and um
01:05:52After the Derry one the guy who runs the venue came up to me and he said uh, I was great
01:05:58It's great that your dad let you do that and I said
01:06:01Do what and he's like your dad let you do a bit of stand-up?
01:06:03I was like I'm a professional comedian and he's like oh, I thought you were Paddy's son. I thought he'd just let you do a turn
01:06:11I mean it's been all downhill since you worked with me you've supported kevin hart bill burr. Yeah, uh, you know, it's
01:06:20How was that compared to being my son?
01:06:25They didn't ask me I was able to call them you know first name first names
01:06:30Instead of daddy, which was sort of at least that was better, but uh, but it was not like any time american comics that I like come over to ireland
01:06:37I was on as well you were yeah, I just drop into their dms and say like you know
01:06:40It's a bit like wanting to have a kickabout in the street with some older boys, you know
01:06:43I just I'm like can I play and uh, and sometimes they say yeah, so
01:06:47Theo vaughn huge american comic was here and uh
01:06:50And it was great. We did the three arena in dublin
01:06:53And then they said he goes do you want to be on the tour the next night?
01:06:57And I didn't know what the date was
01:06:58I said I would love to and he goes we're taking a private jet
01:07:02And I was I mean, I said to him I was like thank god we're taking yours because mine's mine's getting serviced
01:07:08But I uh, I couldn't believe it because my mate tony was with me and uh
01:07:13I said look i'm going around the world somewhere with Theo. We're going the private jet
01:07:17That's just what I do now um probably can't be friends with you anymore tony, but um
01:07:21But I dropped and uh
01:07:24And I went to dublin airport and uh had to get my wife had to drive my passport up at 4am
01:07:30From our house and leave it to the hotel in dublin we're staying at and we got in private jet
01:07:33I said where are we off to and uh, it was cork
01:07:37I swear to god
01:07:39Go to cork
01:07:41In the cork on private jet
01:07:45Now when did you realize that you didn't need a passport to get from dublin to cork?
01:07:50My don't say that because my wife still doesn't know that you do um
01:07:54Yeah, you don't you don't need you can you can just walk on um
01:07:57It turns out you can just walk on seven minute flight um
01:08:00It was insane that we took it because my mate tony took my car
01:08:03And they were in cork two hours before us
01:08:07You know by the time we got through the customs and all that sort of thing
01:08:09But but it was it was wild i mean like most planes go to 30 000 feet
01:08:13When you go dublin to cork it's so quick you go to like 200 feet
01:08:16Nuts
01:08:17Yeah, um and obviously you know you didn't have to stop in any service stations
01:08:21That was something that no, I know you missed out on that's why I was I was hoping if if I was like anytime big american comics are over
01:08:28They want to see ireland, uh, so I I always say like, you know, I'll take you to an apple green, you know, because
01:08:36It doesn't get better than that are you familiar with the the irish apple green tamila of course
01:08:41Yes, the the chicken fillet roll have you tried a chicken fillet roll?
01:08:44Yes, love it some some people call it a service station. I call it our disneyland apple green
01:08:50I'm talking about the big apple greens like we don't have a lot up the road
01:08:53You know where i'm from obviously there's emerald park down here
01:08:56I mean apple green is our our disneyland like last summer my kids who are three and five were like daddy. Can we go to disney?
01:09:02I said even better boys
01:09:04castle bellingham apple green all-inclusive
01:09:06It's brilliant. You can have a shower in apple green. I don't know if you know that
01:09:11I'm not making this up seeing your way home go and check
01:09:13There's no signage up saying you have to be a paying customer out of
01:09:17Sometimes I will just hit the motorway and but I I was doing a gig in dublin at the end of last year
01:09:23You can't you can have a shower and by the way don't worry if you just if the moment just catches you
01:09:27You weren't prepared the truckers will share their shower gel don't worry about that
01:09:32You have to close your eyes and kneel down to get it but they will
01:09:36They will give you by the way I don't want to go on too much about apple green
01:09:40I know we've got some circle k heads in probably so I don't want to
01:09:44Don't want to kick anything off
01:09:47I didn't realize this but
01:09:49but
01:09:51You know we always think we're first choice for a role
01:09:53I didn't realize whenever I got my big movie break that there was a chance that could have been you
01:09:59I'm glad you brought this up
01:10:01You did a movie called ballywalter. Yeah, I'm filling back up at home and and I heard that was being me
01:10:06And I reached out to my agent and I said you tell them i'd love to audition for that because it was a movie about stand-up
01:10:12And they were they had comedians
01:10:14Were part of the roles and I said that this will be perfect. I can I can kind of just play myself
01:10:20And they they said send in a tape
01:10:22We've sent you a script send in a tape of you reading this out like you're a comedian and I said even better
01:10:28I am a comedian. I'll send you in footage of me on stage doing this
01:10:32And and they said no would would prefer you you read it out. So I said i'll do it
01:10:37You know going to be a move
01:10:38I told my wife, you know block two weeks off for me filming this remortgage the house
01:10:42I said i'm in and then I read out their script and I was like this is what I do
01:10:48Didn't get the role. I wasn't believable enough
01:10:51As a stand-up comedian and

01:11:37I honestly folks i don't mind telling you
01:11:39I i say to the person asking me that whatever you're comfortable with
