00:00Now what happens?
00:13Hi, Michelle. I'm Charlie from Showbiz Express. How are you doing?
00:16Hi, I'm fine. How are you?
00:17Congratulations. Very well. Thanks.
00:20Just two questions. What was the most fun going into Bob Fosse's world?
00:25And what was the most daunting in taking on the role of Gwen Verdon?
00:30The most fun was the singing and the dancing because when you're singing and dancing,
00:34you sort of feel like you're a child.
00:36You forget about logic and you follow a melody and a rhythm.
00:43And the hardest thing was probably...
00:47I found the aging was difficult, too.
00:51I'd never really wanted to age on film because I was worried about the prosthetics
00:56and not being able to access a real kind of like translucent human quality underneath plastic and things.
01:03But I worked with two women who I love, Nicole Bridgeford and Jackie Rosado.
01:10They did my hair and makeup and we just kept refining it to a place where it felt really natural.
01:15And so in the end, my favorite part of playing her was playing her when she was 64.
01:22Thanks.
01:24Hi, Michelle.
01:25Hi.
01:26Chris Beecham with Gold Derby.
01:27Hi, hi.
01:27What do you think Gwen Verdon would have to say about tonight?
01:32Old Gwen or young Gwen?
01:34Either one.
01:38She, gosh, it's so hard.
01:40It's hard to put words into somebody's mouth.
01:43I don't know.
01:44I'm sure that she would have.
01:45Everybody who, whenever I meet somebody who knew her,
01:49the thing that they say over and over again was,
01:51she was just the kindest person I ever knew.
01:54And so I'm sure that she would have nothing but warmth and loveliness
01:58and hugs and champagne bubbles about tonight.
02:03Michelle, to the left.
02:05Yes.
02:05Angela Bishop from Network 10 Australia.
02:07Congratulations.
02:09You spoke brilliantly, might I say, about pay parity and you made a plea.
02:15Was it hard for you to achieve that?
02:18And was what had happened on All the Money in the World part of what influenced you
02:22to really fight your own fights?
02:25It was very much.
02:26It sort of woke me up.
02:28I think that I'd always known how difficult it was.
02:32I'd known from the inside how difficult it was to feel like you were ever really getting ahead.
02:39And it felt like no matter how many accolades I amassed,
02:42I still couldn't make that translate into like retirement money
02:49or something that really felt like long-term security.
02:53And so the discrepancy in All the Money in the World was so huge
02:59that it really illustrated a larger point, not just for myself, obviously,
03:04but as I've said before, if it was this difficult for me,
03:07a white woman in a privileged industry,
03:08how difficult is it for women of color across all industries?
03:13And so while tonight is a kind of like fairytale ending for me
03:16and for my own personal story,
03:18there really won't be any satisfaction for me until the larger message is heard.
03:24And that's what I really wanted to point out tonight.
03:28When you look at the numbers, 52% on the dollar is what a Hispanic woman will make
03:36compared to a white male, 62%.
03:40The numbers rise incrementally as you go on.
03:43The numbers aren't out yet for Native women,
03:45but they expect them to be worse than for Hispanic women.
03:50And we have time for just one more question.
03:52Michelle.
03:52Michelle, hi.
03:54Libby from IndieWire.
03:55Hi, Libby.
03:56I know that you spoke about Nicole and Jackie
04:00and working closely with them throughout the process.
04:02What does it feel like knowing that their work, too,
04:04was recognized at the Creative Arts Emmys Awards last weekend?
04:08Thank you so much for asking that.
04:10It felt like something had come full circle.
04:14When we embarked on this journey together,
04:18we really didn't know each other that well.
04:19And because the journey to aging Gwen was so delicate and so difficult,
04:25because as Gwen aged, she didn't become in and down.
04:30She actually aged up and out, kind of like a flower going towards the sun.
04:35So how do you make somebody at once older,
04:37but still luminous and efforting to be younger?
04:42It's a huge challenge.
04:44And both Jackie and Nicole, they're young women,
04:46and they are, in a sense, early in their careers.
04:48But they stayed inside of the process with me,
04:51and they were never afraid to look at problems and say,
04:54this thing still isn't working.
04:55It's still not working.
04:57And we kept refining and refining and being as meticulous as possible
05:02while treating each other with a lot of love and respect.
05:05And so as a result, we've become sort of bonded for life
05:10because we went on this journey together,
05:11and we were honest with each other,
05:14but we were kind with each other.
05:16And because of that, I really share this with them
05:20because I definitely couldn't have done it without them
05:22because it required so much help,
05:24and they were there for me every second of every take of every scene.
05:28So thank you.
05:30Thank you, everyone.
