00:00This episode of The Hollywood Reporter News is brought to you by American Airlines,
00:07Hollywood's favorite airline.
00:09The Late Show's Stephen Colbert is killing it in all arenas.
00:13First up, he will not receive a fine for the risque joke about President Donald Trump
00:16that the host made during his May 1st monologue.
00:19An FCC spokesman said Tuesday that the agency received thousands of complaints
00:23about the suggestive Trump-Putin line and reviewed the material as standard operating procedure.
00:28The agency ultimately found that the joke did not warrant punishment.
00:32Meanwhile, on Tuesday, fellow late-night host Conan O'Brien weighed in on Colbert
00:35and on the controversial joke on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
00:39O'Brien notes that he knows just how hard that gig is.
00:43I think we're getting into a world right now where it's hard to know what's too far.
00:47In other hugely positive news for Colbert, in the last full week of the 2016-17 broadcast season,
00:53his CBS program managed to top NBC's The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon
00:58as the most-watched late-night talk show on broadcast.
01:01An obvious first for Colbert, who struggled in his first year on The Late Show.
01:05It's also a first for CBS since 1995.
01:09Cue Colbert's reaction.
01:12The actual breakdown shows a narrow margin of victory.
01:15The Late Show leads The Tonight Show by 22,000 viewers,
01:183.195 million compared to 3.173 million,
01:22but the year-to-year changes offer the most telling information.
01:25The Late Show has improved 11%, while Tonight has fallen 15%.
01:30The Late Show win comes with a caveat, and a big one at that.
01:33The Tonight Show remains the uncontested leader
01:35in the advertiser-favored demographic of adults 18-49.
01:39So, Colbert's politically-charged Late Show with those oh-so-many-Trump jokes is winning.
01:44Are you watching the show, and how do you feel about his success?
