00:00Chef Michael van Dielsen and restauranteur Ganesh Raj are here to challenge our biggest spenders.
00:06$951.
00:08Transforming kitchens.
00:12Oh, they've got pork belly.
00:13And boosting nutrition.
00:15You guys should come over more often.
00:17All to save our hard-earned cash.
00:20I always got goosebumps.
00:22We get revealing expert help.
00:24Treat it like a bunch of flowers.
00:25Only about half of our babies are eating from the four food groups every day.
00:29And even let you guys in on the act.
00:32Oh my god, I like this.
00:33It's time we all learned to eat well for less.
00:36Oh, that is a win.
00:39This week we meet a flat of young professionals with some kitchen skills.
00:43We can use all of the utensils. Air fry, oven, you know, microwave.
00:47But cooking is sporadic and mostly separate.
00:50Pasta salad.
00:52Salmon on rice.
00:53And they're hitting the takeaways hard.
00:55That's a lot of food.
00:56Can Mike and Ganesh get this gang making tasty home-cooked meals to save a stack of cash and bring them closer together?
01:03I'm really feeling a real connection with Joey right now.
01:06Today we're in Moongafo, or Mount Eden, with a flat of 20-somethings.
01:22Michael is a lawyer.
01:24Joey is in marketing.
01:26Jordan is studying art therapy.
01:28Sandra is an engineer.
01:29And Nushka is an editor.
01:30I'd like to think we channel the spirit of a student flat while having the maturity of a slightly older-than-student flat.
01:39Bunch of Yo-Pros, you know.
01:41Yo-Pros.
01:42Ah, young professionals.
01:44LOL.
01:45There's a mix of vegetarian and meat-eaters in the flat, but everyone is health-conscious.
01:50And Sandra and Nushka are big on getting the right amount of macronutrients.
01:5541% carbs, 29% fat and 30% protein.
02:00Because both of us go to the gym, we're very conscious that we need to get enough protein.
02:04We both have a protein shake each day.
02:06Cheers!
02:07Which we both hate, but we have it because we need it.
02:11How's yours taste?
02:12Disgusting.
02:13Flavour may not be at the forefront, but maybe there's hope for these Yo-Pros yet.
02:18We can use all of the utensils.
02:20Air fryer.
02:21Oven.
02:22You know, microwave.
02:23Magic Ninja Bullet.
02:24That's for dinner, Michael.
02:25Barbecue, also pasta salad.
02:27Michael and Sandra both like to prep their weekday lunches on a Sunday.
02:31It's typically the same thing every week, and at the moment that's a roast veggie salad
02:36with tofu and halloumi.
02:37Wait, does it even have carrots?
02:39But it can.
02:40Michael is notorious for spending hours poring over a recipe.
02:44My ability to vary from recipes is very limited.
02:48Hey guys.
02:49Joey, not so much.
02:50A good meal, roast veggies and chicken.
02:54And a bad day is literally just like sausage and bread.
02:58Mmm, delicious.
03:00As vegetarians, Sandra and Nushka eat very much the same thing.
03:04But if you thought the protein shake was bad, wait till you see Nushka's dinner.
03:09It's usually just like a cup of egg whites and some veg.
03:13I'll put some hot sauce on it.
03:15Jordan, aka Flat Mum, has higher standards but a tight budget.
03:19I get quite sad if I have to have the same meal ever again.
03:22What are you having, Jordan?
03:23Salmon on rice with cucumber and seaweed.
03:26I do love food.
03:27It's not just for fuel.
03:29With meals of varying degrees of success...
03:31I don't know what happened today but it seems more like sloppy than usual.
03:35It won't surprise anyone to hear takeaways are a big feature on the weekly menu.
03:40Regular Hawaiian BK chook.
03:42We get takeaways every Friday and pretty bad over the weekends as well.
03:46Bare battered onion room.
03:48King's collection streaky bacon steakhouse.
03:51Our go-to is Burger King.
03:54Thanks team.
03:55And bubble tea.
03:58I don't know what the macros are on a bubble tea but I think it's time for these Yopros to step up and go pro in the kitchen.
04:05I think it would be great to learn some basic meals that you could just whip up.
04:09Something a bit more exciting than egg whites but still get my macros in.
04:13Maximum taste and least amount of time.
04:15That would be cool.
04:16Least amount of dishes.
04:17Yeah, yeah.
04:18Yes.
04:19I think we can help you with that team.
04:22The flatties usually get their groceries separately so we sat them down for an afternoon of online shopping.
04:27Michael's up first.
04:28Four avocados.
04:30Each one of varying ripeness.
04:33Two broccolis.
04:34I've run out of hot sauce.
04:35It's nice to have a few beverages to have during the week.
04:38I usually get maybe two bags of chips just in case I'm entertaining people.
04:42Kumara, beetroot, courgette.
04:45It would be nice to have some easy, instant-ish meals.
04:49I'm a grown-up now.
04:50I can get grown-up cheeses.
04:52Grown-up cheese brings Michael's weekly spend to $115.
04:56Let's see how much Sandra's protein-powered shop will cost.
05:00What's a low-tato?
05:02It's a low-carb potato and it's less calories and tastes the same.
05:06I want broccoli.
05:07Four banana palumi.
05:09And then I also get Edam.
05:11Edam, the cheese that's made backwards.
05:14I need my almond milk.
05:16Get my chia seeds for my breakfast.
05:18And oats.
05:19Oh, this is getting quite expensive.
05:21This one?
05:22Yeah.
05:23Protein bars.
05:24This is literally like my shop.
05:26I think that's me.
05:27A whopping $151.99 for Sandra.
05:31Although she'll share the cost of the protein powder with Nushka.
05:34Lean muscle mass.
05:36There we go.
05:38Just how many up-and-go variations are there?
05:41There's a lot and it's great.
05:43Oh, palm bags.
05:44Oh, yeah, it's that one.
05:45I'm going to get hot sauce as well.
05:47I'm also going to get chia seeds.
05:49The black ones have more protein.
05:51Protein bars.
05:52Protein bars.
05:53Yeah, now it's the time to reflect.
05:54Yeah, I got a lot.
05:56Jordan's on a much tighter budget as she balances full-time study with work.
06:01I like your low-tatoes, Sandra.
06:02I've never seen those before.
06:03Oh, my God.
06:04Yeah.
06:05I usually get a specific brand, like wraps and bagels, but definitely going for cheapest.
06:10Oh, so you go for the grated versus the block.
06:13Convenience, yeah.
06:14Oh, this is going to be my treat.
06:16I love bagels.
06:17Oh, yeah.
06:18So good.
06:19Oh, it's getting up there.
06:20It's a lean $70.86 for Jordan.
06:23Finally, Joey, who's got online shopping down to a fine art.
06:27Where I start, guys, is the favorites.
06:29Boom, good to go.
06:30Broccolis, carrots, onions.
06:32These crackers here, great price.
06:34Loves an energy drink.
06:36Let's get two of these.
06:37These things here are amazing.
06:39We're almost out of...
06:41Bolivani?
06:42I think I'm the only one that uses this.
06:43I've snuck a few swipes.
06:44So that's why it's been going so fast.
06:46Ramen.
06:47Get a red one, hell yeah.
06:48So I've got bacon chicken.
06:49No sausages this week?
06:51No, we're getting there.
06:52Okay.
06:53There's like a chorizo, which can be good.
06:55Yeah, that's kind of me.
06:56Nice.
06:57Right, what number are you?
06:59I think I'm one and two.
07:00Mike and Ganesh do the honors
07:02and head to the supermarket to click and collect.
07:04How many people in this house?
07:05I don't know.
07:06Dude, there's a lot of stuff here.
07:08I know it's a flat,
07:09but there must be a lot of people in this flat.
07:11They haven't had their usual sneak peek at the shop,
07:14so they're keen to know more
07:16about who they're cooking with this week.
07:18We've sent the flatties out for coffee
07:20while Mike and Ganesh have a rummage around.
07:22So you've got 12 eggs there.
07:24Yes.
07:25But here in another bag, I've got a bag of egg whites.
07:28We've got very busy people
07:30who never learned how to cook rice when they were growing up.
07:32I've got lots of vegetables in here,
07:34but then I come to this last one,
07:35and the whole bag's kind of full of these sort of things.
07:38It looks dangerous.
07:39Doesn't it?
07:40Here we go.
07:41Something's happening here.
07:42And that's it.
07:43There are very different shops going on
07:45for each individual person.
07:47And this is just their shopping.
07:48What about what's in their fridge and their pantry?
07:51Oh.
07:52Now everything's becoming a bit clearer.
07:54Joey, Jordan, Sandra, Michael, Nushka.
07:57We see a lot of doubler.
07:58Yes.
07:59And I'm starting with the protein powders.
08:01One, two, three giant packs.
08:05Four.
08:06Joey's got our favourite,
08:07the old pasta-baked sauces in a jar.
08:10Jordan's got a sweet tooth.
08:12Sandra.
08:13But she's got the rolled oats.
08:14Sandra's the hardcore health nut.
08:16Except she loves it.
08:18Michael's doing well, though, eh?
08:19Lots of seeds, lots of nuts.
08:20And what's Nushka doing?
08:21I mean, she's pretty healthy,
08:22but that's not enough food for a person.
08:25Woo!
08:26There's a lot of food in there.
08:27Carrots.
08:28Lots of carrots.
08:29Veggie delights.
08:30This is a vegetarian house.
08:32Oh, hang on.
08:33There's a little bit of meat.
08:34Hiding up in the corner.
08:35Some bangers.
08:36Look familiar.
08:37That's unopened.
08:38There's a whole pack there.
08:39But do you know what?
08:40This is not the only fridge.
08:42There's another one there.
08:43Let's have a look in here.
08:44Ha!
08:45We have more carrots.
08:46More carrots.
08:47Oh, we do have some more meat.
08:50I'm totally confused.
08:51Are you confused?
08:52Tremendously.
08:53Because we've got two fridges,
08:54we've got a truckload of food.
08:56Shall we just meat these people, please?
09:00Look at that.
09:01Right on cue.
09:02It's almost like they were waiting for us.
09:04Look at them all.
09:05Look at them all.
09:06That's why we have so much food.
09:08Who has the extremely expensive Italian?
09:11That would be me.
09:12Broccoli and carrots and courgettes.
09:14That's also me, yeah.
09:16Are you vegetarian?
09:17Yes.
09:18And then we have this beautiful nugget.
09:21That's me.
09:22Do you cook?
09:23I do cook, yes.
09:24Three for 20.
09:25That's good.
09:26You can't beat that.
09:27I've got lamb sausage.
09:28That's me.
09:29Bacon.
09:30Ramen.
09:31But wait.
09:32We've got that guy.
09:33And even better, that guy.
09:36Yeah, those are mine.
09:39Whose is this?
09:40That would be me.
09:41I put that on top of my overnight oats.
09:43Stop it.
09:44Organized.
09:45Why do you need low carb potatoes?
09:48Because low carb means also lower cow.
09:51Why do you need lower cows?
09:53So I can get more protein.
09:55What is that?
09:5732.99.
09:58Oh.
09:59What does it do?
10:01Protein powder.
10:02You add it to like milk.
10:03You've got edamani beans in there.
10:05Yes.
10:06High in protein.
10:07Have you got any yoghurt in there?
10:08Protein yoghurt.
10:09Do you need this?
10:10Gotta get it from different places.
10:11Okay.
10:12Okay.
10:13Nushka's got protein bars.
10:1416, almost $17 worth of musy bars.
10:16Brown rice quinoa.
10:17I think that's got protein in it.
10:19Didn't we have a full bag of that in the fridge?
10:21I have a lot of egg whites.
10:23The bags are just convenient and there's just more protein in the white.
10:26I mean we've said protein about 27 times.
10:31What a mixed bag.
10:32And many, many bags this flat of five are buying each week.
10:36And Mike and Ganesh still haven't heard about all those takeaways.
10:40So if we look at all this food, what do we feel?
10:43It's a lot of food.
10:44It's a lot.
10:45A lot of packaging.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Sandra, this is your food here.
10:49I feel like it's not a lot of food for $150.
10:52Nushka?
10:53Just a lot of snacks.
10:55Not many like proper meals.
10:57I'm looking for the joy.
10:59Well, I don't really care about what it tastes like.
11:02It's just you.
11:03I care about what it tastes like, but I kind of don't have the time to, so I just eat what's there.
11:09So what about Joey then?
11:10It's looking very instant.
11:11I think my mum would be happy with the oranges and carrots, but a little disappointed with the lack of greenery.
11:15Jordan, you spent the least amount.
11:17Is there seven meals there?
11:19Yeah.
11:20Funny enough, looking at everyone else's, it seems quite small.
11:23Looking at Michael's spend there, I know, looking at the receipt, those chives were $5.50.
11:28Why did you purchase $5.50 chives?
11:31Because the recipe needed them.
11:32Oh, so you follow recipes to the T?
11:36Yes, I've had a number of altercations with deviating from the recipe.
11:41They tend to not go so well.
11:42So the minimum amount of a group your size, age, location to meet your minimum dietary requirements for a male is $75 a week.
11:52And for a female is $64 a week.
11:55Now right now in this household, Jordan has the grand prize of coming as close to that number as possible.
12:02I wouldn't be so happy because I have the combined totals, including takeaways.
12:08So Sandra, today we spent $151.99.
12:12We took off half of that protein powder.
12:15However, your takeaway bill comes in at $75.
12:18Combined total for the week is $226.99.
12:22That's more than I spend on rent.
12:25Nushka, you spent $157.
12:28That's adding on half of that protein at $58.10 on takeaways.
12:32Combined total of $215.71.
12:35First male in the family, Joey you spent $122.32 on some average looking sausages.
12:43Plus takeaway of $125.60.
12:47Combined total $247.92.
12:50No way.
12:51Down to Jordan, $70.86 on his spend.
12:54Takeaways, $110.
12:56What?
12:58Combined total $180.86.
13:01Michael, you spent $121.53.
13:03What do you think you spent on takeaways?
13:05It could be between $50 and $100.
13:07$122.13.
13:08$122.13.
13:09Shoot.
13:10Combined total, you and Joey are really good flatties, okay?
13:13Because you belong together at $243.66.
13:16Lovely bill.
13:17How do you combine all that?
13:19It's almost $1,200 a week on food.
13:21On average, you're all doing three times the national average.
13:26That's a little bit heartbreaking.
13:28Yeah.
13:29At the end of the week, do you feel like you've run out of cash?
13:31Hell yeah.
13:32Definitely.
13:34Here's what I see.
13:35You're all buying food, but you're wasting quite a bit of it
13:38because you're also eating takeaways.
13:40Do you all find yourselves quietly when no one's looking, throwing stuff out at the end of a week?
13:46Be honest.
13:47Yeah, definitely.
13:48So I guess we should try to eat more at home.
13:50Together, in fact.
13:51Together.
13:52Exactly that, Joey.
13:53Would you consider eating together once or twice a week?
13:56Yeah, definitely, yeah.
13:59Five flatmates, five lots of groceries.
14:02They're trying.
14:03They buy all the right vegetables.
14:05They care about portion size.
14:07But their food, it's lacking flavour.
14:09There's no joy in the food they eat, so no wonder they want to pop out and pick up a takeaway.
14:15So we have to give them quick and simple recipes.
14:18Roger.
14:19That are tasty.
14:20That are nutritious.
14:21So that they get some love back.
14:23And hopefully cook together as a group.
14:25And that might save them some money as well.
14:26Absolutely.
14:27Coming up, can Mike deliver a meal from scratch faster than these flatties can pick up a takeaway?
14:33We are going to win.
14:34We're going to win this.
14:36Yeah.
14:37Yeah.
14:43In Maungafau, or Mount Eden, the flatmates are out.
14:46So we've been in to overhaul their kitchen.
14:48The fridge was pretty healthy, so it has been left in peace.
14:51But the pantry has been completely purged.
14:54Protein powders are out and whole foods are in.
14:57Quick fixes are gone and home-cooked meals are now on the menu.
15:00But what will the Flatties make of their new look supplies?
15:03supplies oh my gosh a lot of the pre-made sauces have been put to the side though I reckon that
15:18monster energy is right on the edge oh all my sweet treats are gone and my rice got to spend
15:25time cooking there's a lot of opportunity to collab between shelves break down some of those
15:30berries collaboration could the eat well for less magic be working already let's see if we can kick
15:38off their week of savings with a double swap what do we have here this is a flat which loves cheese
15:43and hot sauce so we've switched out both to try and save them some cash hmm this hot sauce not only
15:51comes with a big saving but also has less ingredients so it's healthier overall yeah the hot sauce is is
15:57pretty solid and I think everyone in the flat would like it this does taste a little bit like
16:01Tabasco to me so right yeah I'm like I don't know we may not have totally convinced Nushka on the hot
16:07sauce but what's the verdict on the cheese it tastes salty like more like mozzarella I think I like the
16:13cheese toast with the hot sauce better just a bit more of a kick yeah probably wouldn't eat it by
16:17itself but with the hot sauce it was nice this combo could save our crew almost 250 dollars a year
16:23let's get straight into another swap so what do we have here it looks like mayonnaise I don't think
16:31they go on muffins Joey's a big fan of Olivani spread and Jordan's been known to take a few slice
16:37swipes too let's get to these bad boys in on the lips so we've switched out the Olivani for a more
16:42budget-friendly spread which is also lower in sodium looks like margarine I think this is just stock
16:49standard just stock standard but yeah it'll be interesting there's a contrast or a difference
16:52and something here cheaper would be nice maybe then I could pay for it we can definitely help
16:57you there Jordan let's see how the taste test goes cheers thank you it honestly tastes the same
17:05it tastes really good yeah I think if this was like cheaper maybe then I'd swap for it hundred percent
17:11dollars make sense right exactly I think we can safely say that's another cost-cutting tick
17:16when it comes to time this gang reckon they're always running short so Mike is here to prove
17:23you can cook tasty cheap food at home and fast so what I'm doing today is I'm going to set a challenge
17:29I'm going to send you ladies down the road to buy some takeaways whilst you're out getting your normal
17:35takeaways the boys shall make an extremely tasty meal so go and get your normal takeaways for five
17:42people okay don't rush too much okay don't cheat okay off you guys right Mike's plan is to make a
17:50roast veggie yellow curry from scratch but can you get it on the table before the girls get back the
17:56countdown is on Michael's first job is onion dicing for the curry paste while Joey's on pumpkin duty so
18:03with ginger take your ginger instead of peeling it with the peeler just use a spoon see so how are we
18:10feeling about our challenge a little bit apprehensive speed is not really my strong suit in the kitchen
18:15as well as onion and ginger the fragrant paste will need four cloves of garlic Joey gets the pumpkin into
18:22the oven we are going to win we're gonna win this so far so good the girls haven't even made it to the
18:27drive-through yet feel like a Friday night next pop the onion and ginger into a big bowl and chop some
18:36capsicum here I've got some makroot leaves these have so much flavor chop two sticks of lemongrass and
18:44crush the makroot or katha lime leaves to help release the flavor Joey how you going down there I'm going
18:50good I'm onto the courgettes now good good one large barbecue rodeo one Hawaiian rebel BK with the
18:59girls making swift progress the pressures on place all the paste ingredients into a blender and give
19:05it a good blitz add some oil into the fry pan and in goes the delicious paste Joey can you give me two
19:12tablespoons of curry powder in there perfect that's one that's two top job cooking with well I think it's
19:18great that you're cooking together I'm really feeling a real connection with Joey right now and
19:23then I've got half a teaspoon of tumeric fry that smell that Michael coconut cream goes in now oh man
19:33the aroma is so strong it smells delicious add the chopped veggies to the fragrant broth peas one cup
19:40and in goes the pumpkin so that could be kumara that could be beetroot it could be anything so now we
19:45let that cook up and we're going to add the spinach in towards the end because it wilts it wilts it wilts
19:51you boys can cook what are you going on about thank you Mike's determined to give the boys some
20:01kitchen confidence so it's time for Michael to season with feeling rather than measurements smash
20:07that with what you feel would be the right amount feet don't fail me now yeah keep going stop when
20:15you're ready okay don't taste it yet I would tend to go almost equal amounts boom equal amount how long
20:25does that make it look good okay that's not bad give it a taste this is about using your senses this
20:34is about cooking without a recipe I think that's great yeah and it took like what 15 minutes felt
20:41like it okay let's finish it cool with the girls still making their way home all that's left to do
20:46is garnish the curry with coriander and mint and the boys are ready with minutes to spare this tasty
21:06meal only cost a fraction of what the girls have just spent on takeaways and at just five dollars per
21:11serve and only half an hour to cook it's a win-win situation we hope oh come on team it's not BK
21:21but it's delicious it's tasty yeah I really like the flavors of the curry she said flavor do you think
21:29you could do this again definitely definitely you could do it again and with a bit of practice as
21:34well it'll get even faster this is very wholesome that family vibe yeah cooking together and eating as a
21:40family I'd say we're off to a good start team coming up the flatties knowledge gets tested do you know
21:46what a meso-emotional is I do not but we're gonna find yeah in Mount Eden this crew of health conscious
22:00yo pros are determined to cut down on takeaways and cook more meals from scratch they know they need to
22:06make big changes so we've got another swap to see if we can rack up some more savings oats are in
22:12high demand in this flat but they're buying big brands so we're attempting a switcheroo with a
22:17supermarket version oh yeah the nutritional value is the same but these come in much cheaper no sugar no
22:30sugar I can't really taste too much of it right yeah yeah I think this is just a different brand but
22:37quite similar right I usually get I mean if this is cheaper yeah yeah yeah swapping these oats out
22:46means almost $100 in savings a year nice work this gang know they need to cook more at home so Mike has
22:55the perfect recipe that also packs in the protein Mike's chip free salad roast pumpkin and meso emulsion
23:02do you know what a meso emulsion is I do not but we're gonna find out start by prepping the pumpkin
23:09and strip the kale leaves off the central stalk do you like kale I've actually never really had kale
23:15other than like in the chip format what about you I try but I really hate it so you really hate it
23:21are you apprehensive yeah a little bit because it says to like lightly saute it have you sauteed
23:27anything before I think so is that just frying it saute the kale leaves and yes Nushka that's
23:34gently fried and cut the pumpkin into pieces ready for the oven I think this is done now pop the kale
23:41into a big salad bowl and drizzle the pumpkin with olive oil looking good that looks good roast for
23:46just over 10 minutes next chop some dates and drain a can of chickpeas is that looking like enough yep
23:52that looks good maybe I can make this for a hot day one slice the dates into bite-sized chunks then
23:59place two eggs into boiling water for five minutes add the dates and chickpeas to the kale and place the
24:07eggs into ice water to stop them cooking carefully roll the eggs should just come off these eggs form
24:17the basis of the emulsion dressing get the pumpkin out of the oven oh yeah it's looking good nice then
24:23prepare the rest of the dressing ingredients it needs a tablespoon of miso the juice of one large lemon and
24:30one large orange brown sugar garlic ginger powder mint leaves and grapeseed oil so one of us needs to
24:39blend and one of us needs to pour shotgun the big boy toy blend while slowly drizzling the oil in
24:48this emulsifies the dressing what's happening pouring the oil time for a swap to share the load
25:00yeah it's coming together pretty good yeah I think that looks really good it's really tasty but it
25:09needs some salt season the dressing add some mint leaves to the salad then pour over the emulsion
25:14dressing give it a good mix that's looking good yeah yeah looking really good and pop it into a
25:21serving bowl look at that top with the roast pumpkin there's a lot of character in all of the cutting the
25:28shapes look really cool and I feel like the color looks really nice yeah so vibrant fresh almost drizzle
25:35with the dressing whoa and it's time to serve guys what do we have here so this is a kale chickpea and
25:44pumpkin salad with a miso emulsion what's an emulsion so I guess it's kind of like like the same process is
25:52like a mayonnaise this salad is packed full of protein in the chickpeas so should make our protein
25:57queens happy plus at under four dollars per serve it's a good cheap meal so it should tick all the
26:05boxes this tastes really fresh are the chickpeas raw yeah they're just straight out of the can yeah
26:11oh I don't know why I don't do that more often honestly it was so quick to prepare yeah I think
26:17this would be cool to do again and as a flat definitely okay now that's what I'd call a success
26:25the flatties may now be dab hands at emulsion dressings but if you're in a pinch pre-made
26:30dressings can also go down a treat so today we're putting balsamic vinaigrettes to the test and who
26:36better to taste than the crew from the Ngāti Whātua Pāurewa community gardens for this team salad is
26:42their specialty I'd say salad dressing is pretty important for flavor probably wouldn't eat it
26:46otherwise in my eyes it's not a salad if it doesn't have salad dressing today they'll be
26:51tasting five balsamic vinaigrettes Cottrell and Rouse balsamic gourmet dressing the most expensive of
26:57the group Prey's balsamic dressing a supermarket owned brand Italian balsamic dressing Eater's balsamic
27:05vinaigrette and finally a light version of Eater's balsamic vinaigrette time to toss the spades aside
27:12and get tasting first up it's praise it's actually quite a good consistency that one a lot of vinegar
27:20tangy like that yeah a real tang very sweet texture my place empty a reasonable start for Prey's how will
27:28Cottrell and Rouse go down it's a little bit darker oh I take too much it reminds me of a sausage sizzle that
27:34one that definitely tastes a bit more flavored eh a lot of soap I like this one I think I like the
27:41tangy it's a bit more spicier yeah I think I like the first one more this one's not as balsamic for me
27:47let's see if the supermarket owned brand does any better it's just like tomato sauce I can't even
27:54taste anything that tastes way more tomato-y it's a bit better it's like a smoked hickory coming from
27:59you know if I'm honest I probably wouldn't put that on myself yeah I'm not a biggest fan of this one
28:05no winning prizes there how will Eater's light and free fare oh yeah there's definitely a lot more
28:11balsamic-y straight off the bat that is it hey that's a lot more balsamic we may have found our
28:18champion this one's mean like it doesn't linger like the first one yep that one mixed well through
28:25the kai too tangy but not overpowering tangy and the good balsamic flavor so far it looks like Eater's
28:31light and free is in the lead but can Eater's traditional balsamic vinaigrette piff it to the
28:36post from the get-go if I didn't know that was balsamic I'd say that's barbecue sure look at that
28:40not as tangy but nice hey it's like the fourth one but yeah that is your number one now I found
28:49it bro yep still got a bit of chili in there not as much not as much yeah bit of a competition on
28:55those last two hey yes for sure so which dressing went beyond the kale of duty it was indeed Eater's
29:01traditional balsamic vinaigrette proving you don't need to spend large for big flavor not surprised to
29:08see that it was the Eater one texture was just right flavor was there and I think the balsamic
29:12came for it the perfect amount as well coming up can our protein queens give up their daily fix it
29:20looks more like a mousse texture it's a new day in Mangafo with our gang of health and budget-conscious
29:33flatties Nushka and Sandra are obsessed with getting enough protein and their expensive
29:37powdered shakes are a vital part of their day but could they ever be convinced to give them up we've
29:44blended a version made entirely of whole natural foods interesting it looks more like a mousse texture
29:49that meets the same protein requirements and is cheaper it's like homemade yeah definitely has a lot of
29:55texture to it it tastes a lot nicer than the pre-made stuff I think because I like sweet things it
30:00doesn't taste sweet enough for me tastes like it's got yogurt in it a little bit sour and some sort of
30:05seed mmm I don't know that I would drink it on a daily basis I really like this so if this gives me
30:11as much protein as my shake then I probably would swap it I think for me I think about making the swap
30:17if it was a bit sweeter and if the consistency was more liquidy looks like there's hope for whole foods
30:24yet the flatties reckon they've got their protein requirements sussed but what do the experts say
30:30nutritionist Amanda Bryan gives Mike the lowdown on our daily needs so protein seems like a bit of a
30:36buzzword at the moment particularly in the fitness industry so how important is protein and are we
30:42getting enough of it so proteins essential for building muscle and repairing tissue but actually
30:47about 98% of people are getting enough protein from dietary sources already and not only are we
30:54getting protein from these food sources we're getting a range of other nutrients that are really
30:58important athletes people at that elite end of the working out spectrum they could benefit from some
31:04additional protein also during pregnancy breastfeeding childhood teenage years there's added protein
31:11requirements even older in our life we need an added protein these types of products here they're
31:16really marketed at that gym market but some of these are really processed foods as well they might
31:23have added sugar sodium saturated fat but then they're missing all of the other nutrients that these
31:29whole foods provide us myself personally I would rather eat this food then go for a shake yeah and some of
31:35these foods can be really easy and quick to prepare after you have had a workout I've been known to
31:40run marathons before what I would prefer to have after one of those long training runs would be
31:46probably a smoothie that has some fruit in it yogurt some milk getting protein that way and also after
31:52we've worked out it's not just protein that we need to refuel and recover we need some carbohydrate for
31:58our muscle as well so if you are concerned about protein what are the sort of quick fixes for people
32:04that are on the go things like a little packet of nuts and seeds a tin of tuna and some crackers with eating
32:10food there's so many more benefits there's the aromas the textures and you're not going to get
32:14that from one of these expensive powders drive-through burgers are a big hit in this household but what
32:22if there was a homemade version that packed in the flavor plus got them working together as a team guess
32:27what we're doing today we're cooking yes we're cooking so much sass so early we're making mushroom
32:33veggie burgers who loves mushrooms I love mushroom the plan is to divide the jobs and conquer so Nushka
32:41is put on garlic and onion duty Ganesha's on mushroom washing while Sandra and Jordan get cracking do you
32:47guys cook together like this and not really we cook in the kitchen at the same time but not really
32:53together so it gets quite busy chop up the mushrooms and add Dijon mustard to the egg yolks for some hot
32:59sauce mayonnaise drizzle and canola oil while gently blitzing to emulsify look at that guys you're making
33:05mayonnaise teamwork makes the dream work finely dice the onions and garlic and place the mayonnaise into a
33:13small bowl you guys made this wow it tastes good pretty good but now we want to make it punchier to
33:20give the mayo a real kick add two teaspoons of hot sauce but will it be hot enough for these self
33:25confessed chili lovers hmm I reckon go more yeah yeah in go two more teaspoons and it's time for taste test
33:33number two mmm that's tasty are we there yeah we're there we're there hot sauce mayo tick now time to push
33:41ahead on the patties and other burger fillings can I cook some bacon for us meat eaters yes you can and we'll
33:48also cook some eggs okay with the running middle don't forget that slice the burger buns open and
33:54get the onions gently frying it feels like you're eating so simply now that you've almost forgotten
34:00what it's like to love the food yeah definitely and especially because we're always in a rush as well
34:05add the mushrooms to the pan and then some fresh thyme leaves drain a can of lentils and put the cooked
34:12mushroom mixture and lentils into a food processor I mean this is not just delicious but so good for you
34:18and it's got lots of protein yes and it tastes good yeah and it's food and it's not a powder
34:28chuck in some walnuts and give it a good blitz then add panko crumbs and flour to help hold the patties
34:34together and blitz again fry some eggs mold the mixture and get the patties into the pan
34:40they'll need about five minutes on each side
34:43on goes the hot sauce mayo patty cheese egg and bacon for the meat lovers
34:50oh don't they look amazing what flavor are the patties mushroom oh mushroom and egg good combo
34:58i'm very impressed with how the the patties are holding together with these kind of veggie ones it's
35:02not mushroom for error so stop it i think everything is perfect right now eat your burgers
35:11at just over four dollars a serve and packed full of nutrition these burgers knock takeaways out of
35:16the park but do our discerning diners agree they're very tasty i love how it just tastes like mushroom but
35:22it actually has lentils in it but i can't taste the lentils exactly and comparing it to the fake meat
35:28patties that you have from your not to be mentioned takeaway place these i think are 10 times better
35:34yeah it's packed full of flavor definitely winner winner winner winner vegetarian dinner
35:42looks like homemade burgers could soon become a regular flat family meal
35:48this crew are all health conscious but still like their sugar hits so ganesh has left a recipe that
35:53delivers a sweet kick but still ticks the health box ganesh's soy milk pumpkin pie oh interesting
36:00have you ever made it for pumpkin pie before no and i haven't used soy milk either i've never baked
36:05with soy milk first up add ready to go pumpkin chunks to a bowl and microwave for a couple of minutes
36:11one cup of coconut sugar to the coconut sugar add ground cloves cardamom ground ginger and salt and
36:18gently mix together make sure the pumpkin is cooled down then mash till smooth then add soy milk and
36:25eggs to the dry ingredients do you reckon our flatmates are going to enjoy this i think i will enjoy it
36:31because it's got a cup of sugar in it my prediction is that i think sandra will enjoy it as well i think
36:36she's a big dessert head whisk the eggs in add the mashed pumpkin and give it another good mix next up
36:42place a sheet of pastry into a pie tin see how good my art skills come into play yeah it is kind of
36:49like edible play-doh pour the pumpkin mixture into the pastry case okay now let's try and not spill it
36:55then place in the oven to cook
37:02jordan and i have created this hopefully incredible pumpkin pie what are we having with the pie a greek
37:09yogurt lots of protein with cardamom in it at just over one dollar per serve this is a crazy cheap
37:19treat that should hit the sweet spot while still serving up some nutrition
37:24it's good you can taste the cardamom yeah i feel like there are too many spices in this i'm a very bland
37:30eater yeah this is really tasty guys i really like it i think this would be quite a good option for sort
37:36of like a potluck dinner or something like that and i think it's not too sweet quite sophisticated
37:41yeah yeah not something people would expect from yo pros like us they'll be the toast of any potluck
37:48and it's another team win coming up mike and ganesh deliver the shock of the century
37:53our week of culinary awakening with the flatties is almost over they've cooked as a collective
38:09swapped out some favorites and put the takeaways on pause but have mike and ganesh done enough to
38:14convince this lot to make the changes for good buddy how they've gone this week well i hope they like the
38:20recipes i know and are they cooking together that's the big thing hello nice to see you again
38:28good to see you too so how has this week been let's start with you michael it has been interesting
38:36i've learned a lot of stuff about you know different recipes i can make so i'm very happy with how things
38:41have gone i've gone from a more of a sausage boy to a chickpea king i gotta admit i'm not a big fan of
38:47pumpkin but after having three dishes with pumpkin i'm on board all the recipes that we've cooked have
38:55shown us how easy it is just whip up a dish and that really when we say we have no time we're just being
39:01lazy can you please listen to your flatmate how do you follow that nuska it's really nice cooking with
39:11these guys so yeah this is amazing so all in all everyone's learned something and you kind of still
39:19like each other yeah definitely when we first met you guys protein powder was a huge part of your life
39:25and i mean huge how do we feel about where protein powders fit and where fresh food fits into your world
39:31we can definitely work in some more fresh food they will both still play a part in my life but i will
39:38definitely try and incorporate those more real food sources of protein and now comes the exciting
39:44time yes what did we think of our cheese toasting i think i like the cheese toast with the hot sauce
39:50better the hot sauce is pretty solid yes we did swap the cheese out little saving that's per packet
39:58so you're happy with that because you had the cheese i am very happy yes okay to the chili
40:02you probably go through a fair amount of teddy don't you definitely so that's a saving per bottle
40:09that's a lot is that a keeper yeah that's a keeper i really like my really spicy sauce but this is
40:18definitely a good like here and there so you're in there here and there okay well done top job who had
40:24the oats i can't really taste too much of it right yeah yeah well we did swap the oats and you do get a
40:35little bit of a saving yeah the question would be is it enough of a saving with the oats definitely
40:40i'm not brand loyal if nush is happy i'm happy oh thanks we gotta swap we gotta swap out of it okay
40:49okay now who loves a good spread on their bread honestly tastes the same one it tastes really good
40:57yeah yeah was it a swap yes it was but wait there's more well that's your saving wow do you like the
41:07saving enough to keep the swap yeah definitely great the one that you had before was olivani olive oil
41:12this one is made with canola oil which is high in protein winner hey talking about protein oh here
41:20we go i've got another bag i'm making some space for you here oh this is our shake right tell us about
41:27your protein shake it was nice it looks more like a mousse texture it tastes a lot nicer than the pre-made
41:33stuff i enjoyed it but it needs to have the same amount of protein or more than my shake does so how
41:40much protein is in your normal shake that you have every single day 30 grams so in the protein
41:45shake that we made for you there was all of these wonderful natural ingredients in there you got some
41:51soy your peanut butter yogurt chia seeds cacao and a banana and tell me again how much protein did you
41:58have in yours 30 the one that we made you actually had 31.6 no way that's crazy all these things in here
42:08are high in protein but there's more good news the saving is that oh my goodness that is per eight
42:18serves so the big question is is 31.6 grams and a 12.96 saving enough to convince you yeah yeah yeah
42:30i think you can't say no to that well well done well done if they said no to that i know i know we'll
42:38walk it out right now top top so we've got some good savings here you guys aren't shopping too badly
42:45either it's the amount of takeaways that you consume as a combined group you spend 490 dollars on
42:50takeaways a week what helping the local economy that's heartbreaking 490 bucks i think we're not
43:00evil people and you guys are growing you're young you're having fun we're thinking about halving your
43:06takeaways because annually as a group they will save you twelve thousand seven hundred and sixty one
43:12dollars but in context each of you will save two thousand five hundred fifty two dollars a year
43:21now is that something each of you could put onto something else that's like a plane
43:27and hopefully by cooking more you're not wasting that fresh food that you bought and if you shared
43:33food more that's it the savings would go through the roof so tell us how do you feel about the savings
43:38and of course coming together cooking together can you do this yes i think it's all around a good
43:45idea definitely sounds like a word doesn't sound like we're losing anything i think that a lot of
43:50the time when i'm getting takeaways i have the time to cook something myself so this is really
43:55something that we can we can cut down on i think all right so we're doing it we're doing it are we
44:00doing it now that we know that we can work together and make some delicious meals i think that will
44:11definitely happen at least once a week to come out with you can save on this you can cook this you have
44:17time to cook this it's been pretty amazing you make time for the things you love and if food is
44:23something i'm gonna love then i'm gonna have to make more time for it standing by
44:53so
