Dans le Dorset des années 1840, Mary Anning, une chasseuse de fossiles autodidacte et quelque peu revêche, accepte d'héberger la femme d'un riche touriste en échange du versement d'un loyer dont elle a désespérément besoin pour vivre. Charlotte Murchison, la jeune épouse, souffre de neurasthénie, et ce séjour en bord de mer fait partie de son traitement. D'abord méfiante, Mary finit par se laisser attendrir par sa cadette. La relation qu'elles nouent leur redonne peu à peu le goût de vivre...
