00:00Hi, this is Marietta Melrose from Bulgaria.
00:02Amazing job.
00:04Just congratulations.
00:05You've touched people around the world.
00:07And because, as a testimony of your work,
00:10I want to shine light upon your documentary.
00:13You started your documentary with a Bulgarian song.
00:17How did you guys decide to do that?
00:19And thank you for doing it.
00:21Well, I have to actually give all that credit
00:23to Chris Mokabel, who is the director of that film.
00:27That was his idea, and I think he did a beautiful job.
00:32Everyone should watch your documentary.
00:35Mark's in it.
00:35We're going back to 255.
00:39G'day, guys.
00:40Just up the back here.
00:41Andrew Bucklow from news.com.au in Australia.
00:44Gaga, to you specifically.
00:45I'm sorry, where are you?
00:47Up the back.
00:47And give me one second.
00:48So we're going to him, and then we'll go to 24.
00:51The handsome man up the back.
00:53Gaga, you have so many fans that are members of the LG
00:57LGBTQI community.
00:59At the moment, so many of them are on their way to Sydney
01:01to celebrate for the gay and lesbian Mardi Gras.
01:04Your songs, as well as Shallow, will be on repeat
01:07throughout the whole festival.
01:08I'm wondering if there's a message that you can send
01:11to everyone who's on their way to Mardi Gras.
01:13What I would love to say is one of the hardest things in life
01:19is to be brave enough to be yourself.
01:22I wish to everyone that is going to that celebration
01:26to feel a joy inside of them.
01:29That's actually what Bradley said to me yesterday,
01:33right before we did our last rehearsal
01:36for this performance of Shallow.
01:38He said, let's just drop a little bit of joy.
01:42And I said, OK.
01:44And it turns out, joy did a whole lot for me.
01:48So I'll tell you something.
01:50I hope that everyone there in Sydney feels so much joy
01:54and celebrates all sexual identities.
01:57And I also have a true dream in our future
02:01as we evolve as humanity,
02:03that these award shows will not be male and female,
02:06but that we include everyone.
02:10We're going to 24 and then I'll go to 140.
02:14Hi, I'm over here to your right.
02:15Charlie from Crystal Vision Media.
02:17Congratulations to all of you.
02:19Gaga, can you talk a little bit about
02:21what you talked about on stage?
02:23I think that a lot of people might look at you
02:25and all the wins and success you've had in your life
02:28and they don't really see what you've been through
02:31to get to where you are today.
02:33Can you talk a little bit about
02:34some of the struggles that you've had to overcome
02:37and what's brought you to where you are today?
02:39Well, I'll have to bring the gentleman up with me
02:41a little closer while I answer this question.
02:45Because firstly, what I would like to say is
02:48for this film, there were many songs written,
02:51but there was one song that was written
02:54with true, true friends of mine that I've known
02:58who know everything about me, the ups and the downs.
03:03And the truth is, people see what they see on the outside.
03:08And in some way, shape or form at times,
03:11we become archetypes.
03:13But the truth is, I was so determined to live my dreams.
03:23And yet, there was so much in the way.
03:27There were so many things I did not anticipate
03:30that broke me, that tortured me, that traumatized me.
03:35And I think, sometimes, what you are trying to clarify
03:40is that people think that it comes easy to us.
03:44Because when we show up and we have our suits on,
03:48that it's all OK.
03:50But the truth is, every single person on this stage
03:54has been through so much.
03:57We are friends.
03:59We have worked on ourselves in life.
04:03We have tried to heal through the torment
04:08of this industry and being artists.
04:12And the truth is that this is very, very hard work.
04:18And it is not for the faint of heart.
04:20But I would never want to imply that anyone in the world
04:25is faint of heart.
04:26I wanted everyone tonight to feel
04:29like they could be each one of us on that stage.
04:33And I'm so very grateful that I got to be up there
04:37with these incredible men that I call my friends.
04:40I remember the moment we wrote this song together.
04:43It was great.
04:44It was beautiful.
04:45And I'm so honored to be here.
04:50Hey.
04:50Hey.
04:51We're going to go to 140 and then 189.
04:56Hello.
04:57Taylor Kaye from Toronto.
04:58We have your song in heavy rotation.
04:59So thank you for that.
05:01And music plays such an integral part in movies.
05:04I'm asking the question, what movie soundtrack did you, Lady Gaga and Mark, first purchase?
05:10What was your first movie soundtrack?
05:11Mine was either Top Gun or Beverly Hills Cup.
05:17That puts about, like, my age on display and Axl F and Top Gun theme.
05:23So yeah, there you go.
05:25For me, it was The Bodyguard.
05:27Yeah.
05:28Come on.
05:29Uh, Singles, I think it was.
05:33Oh, yeah, you did make a cool one.
05:34Yeah.
05:35That's good.
05:36No, but I didn't end up really liking it that much, except for the one song I'm
05:39thinking of as well.
05:40Uh, Risky Business.
05:41Ooh.
05:42All right.
05:43We're going to go here to 189 and then back to 44.
05:47This is Lady Gaga right here in front.
05:49Hi.
05:50This is kind of from New York Magazine.
05:51For you, this has been clearly, we saw tonight, we've seen it at other evenings throughout
05:55this whole experience for you, a very emotional journey that you've been on.
06:00And I'm curious how, what you felt making the movie, writing the songs, getting through
06:06this night, has, how it has set the table for what you want to do going forward and maybe
06:12more importantly, who you want to be.
06:15I want to continue to be myself.
06:19I want to continue to fight for what I believe in and do my best.
06:27The truth is, I am not standing here tonight for myself.
06:32And I think I can speak for these men standing next to me, that they are not standing here
06:37tonight for themselves either.
06:39We are standing here for all of you.
06:41We love making music.
06:43We love making art.
06:45I love being an actress.
06:47And the truth is, when this Oscar was handed to me tonight, I looked right in the eyes of
06:53it, and I saw a lot of pain.
06:58I saw all the things that I've been through.
07:02And I also felt the camaraderie and the truth of the pain that the men standing next to me
07:08have been through as well.
07:11I said it before and I'll say it again, this is not easy work.
07:17And nothing was handed to us.
07:19And I couldn't be prouder to be up here with my real friends.
07:24We really sat in a room and wrote a song together, not knowing if anyone would give a damn.
07:34When we talk to each other about life, say something, Mark, I can't keep talking.
07:40Well, we also, me and her drank a lot of Jameson.
07:45She sat at a piano, I'm telling you.
07:47Then.
07:48Not today.
07:49She sat at a piano and we all had headphones on and there was like this slightly quiet,
07:53hushed vibe in the room and Anthony was playing a guitar and I remember when she first was
07:58kind of like throwing out melody, she's like, tell me something, girl, and all my hair stood
08:03up and I thought like, it felt like someone hugging my soul from like the heavens.
08:08And there's, that's what this song has.
08:10It has melancholy, it has triumph, it has the feeling of a hug, all these things.
08:14And then the performance in the film and Bradley's direction is what then put it in everyone's
08:19hearts.
08:20Yes.
08:21We have to thank Bradley tremendously because the truth is everybody in this room knows
08:26this song would not be what it is without this film and without Bradley Cooper and without
08:31his incredible voice on this record and without the way he shot this moment in this film.
08:37It's backwards, I'm sorry.
08:42We didn't even know because we weren't in the film, making the film like Lady Gaga wasn't.
08:47I saw the first rough assemblage of the film, Bradley was kind enough to show it to me and
08:50I saw the scene in the parking lot and I had no idea that our song had now become part
08:54of the script and she turns to him and she goes, tell me something in the parking lot
08:58and I just wanted, all my hair stood up, sorry, I'm a little lacking on other expressions right
09:04now, but, and I just wanted to run out and call Andrew and Anthony and be like, you're not,
09:08like first of all, we're going to be rich, no, but I wanted to be like, you're not going
09:13to believe when you see what they've done with this song, like it's like it's on steroids,
09:17the emotional weight of it now, like I'm so psyched, you can buy the house, Anthony, no.
09:22And then I was like, so yeah.
09:24It's your house.
09:25Yeah, I guess.
09:26Yeah, we all live together.
09:27Yeah, we all live together, but it really is special and Bradley, you know, we've all
09:32been involved with different songs for different films and stuff and like, you know what Bradley
09:36does when you see the way that that song is performed and weaved into that narrative is,
09:41it's a testament to his thing.
09:42And I wish that you all could have witnessed watching him sing take after take live.
09:51This was sung live every single time what you see in this film was sung live, it was recorded
09:57live, it was recorded live properly so that it would sound fantastic.
10:03And he also directed at the same time.
10:06And I truly hope that everyone in the room tonight when they saw our performance saw the
10:12true brilliant man that he is, the actor, the director, the screenplay writer, the producer,
10:22the musician.
10:23And we're going to wrap it up with 44 right here.
10:29Congratulations, Lady Gaga's jazz rules daily.
10:32I think it's safe to say every monster, everybody who's seen the film gives a damn about the song.
10:37It's so beautiful.
10:39Why do you think the song resonated?
10:41We first heard it back in August when the trailer was released.
10:44Now in March, people have listened to it like thousands of times.
10:48Why has it resonated so deeply with everybody?
10:50Do you want to talk a bit about that?
10:53I think Gaga said it before and I'll just echo it again and I think it's pretty on point,
10:58is that the song started with a conversation.
11:00The song itself is a conversation and it's between a man and a woman.
11:04And I think that's maybe there's some timing involved where people's hearts are open to
11:08that conversation.
11:10And I don't know, maybe that's why it has translated so widely.
11:15Someone sent me a couple of videos this week of an entire church congregation singing the
11:19song.
11:20And I was like, you know, it brought me to tears, actually.
11:22Did your hair stand up?
11:23My hair stood up, but not as high as Mark's.
11:26You know, I really believe in my heart that the unfortunate truth is that our cell phones,
11:36as I watch you all typing, are becoming reality.
11:42It's becoming reality for the world.
11:45And in this song, we provide not just a conversation, but also a very poignant statement.
11:55I wish to not be in the shallow, but I am.
11:59But I wish to dive off the deep end and watch me do it.
12:04I think this is something that speaks to many people.
12:08And during, I think, a very shallow time, it's a chance for us all to grab hands, you know,
12:18and just dive off into the water together and swim into the deepest depths of the ocean
12:23that we can.
12:25Thank you so much.
12:27Congratulations to all of you.
