00:00What would Karen do if she encounters a Demogorgon?
00:10Stay away from my daughter.
00:16I don't think there was a take where I didn't go full out on it.
00:21It was kind of incredible to be part of such a pivotal scene.
00:30It was our dream to do a supernatural home invasion sequence essentially.
00:49The fact that the Wheeler house has been safe from all of this I think makes it that much
00:53more horrifying that it is breached.
01:02This was one of the most complicated sequences in season five but took a lot of planning.
01:08The whole sequence was storyboarded and pre-vis because it involved a lot of work from every
01:13single department.
01:14We had the Wheeler house on stage.
01:16It's like one of the few standing sets for Stranger Things that's been up since season
01:22one in various forms.
01:24We needed to use cranes and so we had to use three walls that were removable and we had
01:29to choose which wall needed to go away.
01:32We needed to create that red rift light coming down into her room and also give room for her
01:37to get yanked up.
01:39We wanted as much as possible for those stunts to be performed by the actors.
01:43Kara was game.
01:45Nell was a total badass.
01:47I had like this massive harness on.
01:50I was walking like a complete penguin.
01:53She was in wires and in a harness a lot this season and she was such a rock star.
01:59Just game for all of it.
02:00There's a demogorgon that's got a hold of her and there's not a demogorgon there so we
02:04have to create that look so there was even a line on her leg to look like she was being
02:09pulled.
02:10Stop!
02:11One of the difficulties for me was remembering that I had to keep that leg straight because
02:16obviously that's where all my weight is being pulled from.
02:20The stunt team were really amazing and they helped me figure it all out so that I could focus
02:25on the performance.
02:26Stop!
02:27Stop!
02:28Stop!
02:29Stop!
02:30Stop!
02:31Stop!
02:32Stop!
02:33What the heck?
02:34It's the proximity of evil and stranger things that motivates the flickering lights.
02:40Everything gets run through a board where we have a remote operator who's taking cues
02:46and is able to control remotely every single light on set.
02:49Typically when just a single light flickers we might have something like this.
02:54This is what we actually called the Holly flicker which was in Holly's room.
02:57This here is the lighting plot for this stage.
03:00We've got 40 to 50 in just her room and over the whole stage is about 600.
03:05The bottom of the tub was cut off and attached to the bottom of the tank so that two people
03:24could fit in it.
03:25We tested it out to make sure that we liked the lens and that we could line it up.
03:29We also needed to basically sync up the cadence.
03:32The top edge of the tub is actually the cut line.
03:35Both dolly grips for that shot had to work in unison essentially to match the other's timing
03:41so that there was no speed change.
03:43When we dunked this I made sure that Kara's nightgown wasn't too see-through so it's double
03:48layered because I didn't want it to be too clingy especially if you're going to see any
03:52stunt pads or protection underneath.
03:53With Nell luckily it's street clothes that can be wet and stay wet.
03:59Karen is wearing a wig that has been bleached blonde and that has been permed.
04:03Some of the coolest shots were where it was kind of like moving and crossing and covering.
04:07Lots of rehearsal time with them prior to and being able to go under the water and hold
04:13their breath.
04:14We had to put weight belts on them so that they would stay on the bottom and not float up.
04:19You would squeeze my hand or I would squeeze your hand which signaled, you know, 3, 2,
04:241, up.
04:29We could have held our breath longer.
04:30We, I think we ended up having little competitions.
04:34Yeah.
04:35I was like just waiting for Kara to squeeze my hand, I was like I could stay here all day.
04:40We needed to know exactly where the Demogorgon was at every single moment so the actors and
04:50everyone working on it understood where it was.
04:53Chief!
04:54Oh yeah.
04:55We have a fantastic Demogorgon stand in named JD.
04:59We're not doing motion capture, any kind of performance capture with him.
05:02He is there so that the other actors and crew can see the Demogorgon is going to be there,
05:07they're going to be this big and this is what they're going to be doing.
05:10We definitely go through rehearsals first.
05:12We have Ted swinging the golf club trying to find out exactly where he should hit the
05:17kickpad.
05:18If you see that orange X on the kickpad right there, that's actually the eyeline for Ted.
05:22The bros wanted the POV of the Demogorgon so we had to build roads and platforms in
05:28order to get the steady cam at that height.
05:31We also use a Demogorgon head that the VFX team has made to see how it kind of behaves with
05:36whatever lighting is set up for the scene.
05:41Once I slashed Ted, we get the stunt double in there and he just goes tearing through the
05:47wall.
05:48Oh my gosh, look at that.
05:57Wow.
05:58It was a little bit of a challenge because we knew this destruction was going to happen
06:04so we had to find some doubles of various things.
06:07So I had to find two of the same armoire.
06:09We had to make doubles of all the drapes and stuff.
06:11We had a Demogorgon claw that matches the nail handprint of a Demogorgon.
06:17So we just used that to drag along the walls.
06:19When we were shooting the scene, I came up and I saw the total and complete destruction
06:23of Nancy's room and our room and the set.
06:27And I was very affected by seeing it.
06:30It brought back that memory of when the Duffer said, come see your house.
06:33We just finished building the Wheeler house and this is your kitchen and this is everything.
06:37Flash forward to now, this is the end of the house.
06:39Literally, not just saying, we're done shooting here.
06:41It was destroyed.
06:43This was a Texas switch.
06:54So Kara and Nell were starting the scene up on top of the stairs running down.
06:59Kara would duck out to the wall and the stunt double came running in and took the fall.
07:03Alice Ford, who doubled Kara, was a great match for her.
07:08She knocked this one out of the park.
07:09Oh!
07:10Oh!
07:11Oh!
07:12Oh!
07:13Holly, get back!
07:14Oh!
07:15Oh!
07:16Oh!
07:17Oh!
07:18Oh!
07:19What would she do if she encounters a Demogorgon?
07:21Karen shares so many qualities with Nancy.
07:25That sort of ferocity, that strength, that courage, that bravery is such a part of who
07:30Nancy is also exists within Karen.
07:33Ah!
07:34Because they're struggling as a family to deal with what's happening with Holly.
07:37You're ridiculous.
07:38You don't even know how old she is.
07:39I'm not talking to you when you're late.
07:41We wanted to see Karen slightly intoxicated and the idea that then, you know, she would then
07:48use this wine bottle as a weapon was a fun idea.
07:51We worked really closely with Hedo to come up with what the Demogorgon would be doing
07:56and how Karen could interact with him.
07:59We wanted to really make sure it felt like they're both in that room together.
08:03We did some with just JD sitting there holding his hand, but she needed something to impact.
08:09We wanted to get in there with, like, a really tight eye line.
08:13We used a piece of foam so that she could really lay into it.
08:18Kara ended up swinging that wine bottle for almost an hour.
08:22I don't think there was a take where I didn't go full out on it.
08:25Mom, no!
08:27No!
08:28Stay away from my daughter!
08:32The scream I did after breaking the bottle, this primal sound came out.
08:52Whether she even knows what the heck is going on.
08:57There's a monster in her kitchen and she's going to fight to save her daughter.
09:02No!
09:03I don't think that they were anticipating the ferocity.
09:07Kara was actually saying, I want you to really hit me.
09:24I want you to hit me hard.
09:25I was looking at Hedo like, should I do this?
09:28And Kara's like, yeah, just hit me.
09:29So, you know, I go for it and I'm being a little careful.
09:33And she's like, no, no, harder.
09:34I want to feel it.
09:35So I'm like, oh, really?
09:36Okay.
09:37So I go a little harder and she's not wearing any pads or anything.
09:43When it comes to the Demogorgon wounds, the Duffers did not want them clean slices.
09:54They wanted them to be very jagged and edged.
09:56Her entire process was under two hours to get her in her deconstructed beauty makeup look,
10:03as well as her wig and her prosthetics on her chest.
10:06Once you start putting blood on a wound, it tends to travel everywhere.
10:10It's like constantly pit crewing, making sure that it all looks the same throughout the
10:15entire day of shooting.
10:17The brutality of what occurs to Karen, we're hoping that it stuns audiences.
10:24I just love that they brought Karen into the story of what's going on in Hawkins and that
10:38she gets to really participate.
10:41It was truly one of my favorite scenes to film ever with you.
10:46This was kind of the start of my journey on Stranger Things.
10:52It was kind of incredible to be part of such a pivotal scene.
10:56We always loved the juxtaposition between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
11:02That really has defined the show for so long, and this is sort of the ultimate example of
11:07those two things colliding.
11:08And I think it shows right away in the season that no one is safe, no place is safe, none
11:13of our characters are safe, even the ones that over the years have been shielded from
11:18these horrors.
11:19No more.
11:20Maybe four broken ribs?
11:21Stand by Danny B.
