00:00The End
00:30He's five foot two and he's six feet four
00:36He fights with missiles and with spears
00:40He's all of 31 and he's only 17
00:45He's been a soldier for a thousand years
00:49I always wanted to be a Marine and I always wanted to experience war
00:53Just glorious, the best of the bunch
00:56You know, the day you went in was the day you were stamped
01:00You know, you were able to shave, you were a man
01:04He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain
01:09A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
01:13And he knows he shouldn't kill
01:17And he knows he always will kill you
01:20For me, my friend, and me for you
01:23We lost, they lost, the people that lost their lives
01:26Too bad
01:27There were more United States Marine casualties in Vietnam
01:32Than there were United States Marine casualties in the entire Second World War
01:37The day I left, you know, it was like, jeez, you know
01:40I mean, somebody's pulling me out of hell
01:42He's fighting for Canada
01:44He's fighting for France
01:47He's fighting for the USA
01:50And he's fighting for the Russians
01:54And he's fighting for Japan
01:56And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way
02:01And he's fighting for democracy
02:04He's fighting for the Reds
02:07He says it's for the peace of all
02:11He's the one who must decide
02:14Who's to live and who's to die
02:16And he never sees the writing on the wall
02:20I've been through the anger
02:21I've been through the rage
02:22And the sorrow
02:23And the depression
02:25And the alienation
02:26And everything
02:26I'm just bitter right now
02:27We're not the heroes at all
02:29We're the fools
02:30He's the universal soldier
02:33And he really is to blame
02:36His orders come from far away no more
02:39Hey, America, look at these guys
02:41Hey, America, understand what's happened
02:44And brothers, can't you see
02:46This is not the way we put an end to war
02:52The war isn't over, but it is ending
03:06It is ending not because of the Paris talks
03:09Or the demonstrations at home
03:10It is ending because the largest and wealthiest
03:14And most powerful organization on Earth
03:16The American Army
03:17Is being challenged from within
03:18From the very cellars of its pyramid
03:21From the most forgotten
03:22The most brutalized
03:23And certainly the bravest of its members
03:25The war is ending because the grunt
03:29Is taking no more bullshit
03:30I just can't take too much pressure from the Army
03:33What happens to an unpopular officer?
03:35A friend of mine, Captain
03:38Kind of got shot in the back
03:40I made that film with director Charles Denton in 1970
03:45At the height of the Vietnam War
03:47Which I remember as a constant Halloween night
03:49Always growing brutally real
03:51On patrol, tripwires made each stone and twig
03:55A threat to life
03:56Pulling leeches off each other
03:58Was a ritual that relieved the hours of waiting
04:00For the seconds of terror
04:02And with each step calling for a superhuman effort
04:05To reclaim a boot from the sucking mud
04:07A hand would reach back
04:09Followed by a reassuring voice
04:11Come on man, let's go
04:12The voice would come from a street corner in the Bronx
04:16A rural town in the Confederacy
04:18A steel mill in Pennsylvania
04:20Little People's America
04:21Last year
04:23A poll found that 62% of Americans
04:26Believe that Vietnam veterans
04:28Fought in the wrong war
04:30In the wrong place
04:32At the wrong time
04:33And were suckers
04:35This is a film about those suckers
04:37They made up the greatest volunteer army in history
04:40They came home not to parades
04:43But to a purgatory of silence, shame, indifference
04:47Or they came home in plain wooden boxes
04:50Marked this way up, unviewable
04:52Today there is not a single national monument
04:56To their dead
04:57As if America's longest war didn't happen
05:00The right wing insists the war should have been won
05:03And blame the veterans for not winning it
05:05Those on the left see them as baby killers and dupes
05:09And those in the middle regard them rather like last year's car
05:12Obsolete
05:13This film is about that great invisible army
05:17And what has been done to them
05:19In order to forget and to rewrite a period of history
05:22Justifying its repetition
05:24For the echoes of that adventure
05:27In which perhaps a million civilians died
05:29Are being heard again today in another Vietnam
05:32Where only the geography has been changed
05:35And the appetite for war without heroes
05:38Remains as voracious as ever
05:41This is a purple heart
05:44You won two of them, Jay
05:46And these are your dog tags
05:48And other bits of memorabilia from Vietnam
05:52Including photographs
05:53What do these evoke for you?
05:56What memories do they bring back?
05:59I can't say I'm angry
06:02I'm not necessarily angry
06:04But it brings back a lot of bad memories
06:09An entire bad period
06:11Not only Vietnam
06:12But my whole military service
06:13And years since then
06:16You were in the Marines
06:18Did you always want to be a Marine?
06:20Oh yeah
06:20You know
06:22It was just expected
06:23You had to go in the military
06:24I mean I wasn't forced to go
06:25But it was just
06:26You know
06:26It was expected
06:27Of course you know
06:28You go right into the military
06:29Out of high school
06:30It's the best thing for you
06:31You know
06:32Make a man out of you
06:33Then if you want to go to college
06:34You can come back and try that
06:36Or whatever
06:36But I always wanted to be a Marine
06:38And I always wanted to experience war
06:40I was raised on it
06:42Every birthday
06:43I got cap guns and helmets
06:44And canteens
06:45Played war all the time
06:46When I was a kid
06:47The television was always war movies
06:50Sands of Iwo Jima
06:51Back to Bataan
06:52And I got used to that
06:54John Wayne idea
06:55To be a Marine
06:55That's how you become
06:56A real man
06:58Is become a Marine
06:59Because John Wayne
07:01Never served a day in his life
07:02In any military service
07:03But he's the greatest Marine we have
07:05So when Vietnam
07:08Started to heat up
07:09When I was like a sophomore
07:10In high school
07:11I was just
07:11Oh boy
07:12Now there's a war for me
07:13I can get in there
07:15I wanted to serve my country
07:17It's almost bizarre
07:21To think about it now
07:22Did you enjoy Vietnam
07:24At any stage
07:24Because you had been brought up
07:26To love war
07:27And you had your war
07:29Your very own war
07:30Well see on television
07:31When somebody would get shot
07:32They would
07:33And they would fall down
07:35There was no blood
07:36You know
07:37I just
07:38When I first got there
07:39And I saw people
07:39Torn to pieces
07:40And blown in half
07:41And shot through the head
07:43And I was just
07:44I went into shock
07:45I know I did
07:46I know I was in shock
07:47The first two weeks
07:48I was in active combat
07:50But that
07:51I just
07:52I couldn't believe it
07:53I couldn't believe
07:54That that's what it looked like
07:55And it was actually
07:57That nasty
07:57And I came back
07:59From Vietnam
08:00I had a heroin addiction
08:02I was just
08:06In the beginning stages
08:06Of becoming an alcoholic
08:08I had
08:10My opinion on life itself
08:12It completely changed
08:13I was
08:14I was just disgusted
08:16With everything
08:17How did you become
08:18Addicted to heroin?
08:20When I first got to Vietnam
08:21I ran into a
08:23Guy I'd gone to high school with
08:24And he was the first one
08:25And said
08:25You know
08:26If you go out to the bush
08:27Which I was going to the bush
08:28In a combat outfit
08:29You can't drink out there
08:31If you get drunk
08:32You can't function
08:33When I got to my unit
08:34I
08:34Everybody
08:35It seemed like everybody
08:37Was getting high
08:38One way or another
08:39Some sort of drug
08:40And I fell right in
08:41With the you know
08:42The wrong
08:43The wrong people
08:44I hate to use that term
08:46They were the right people
08:46For me at the time
08:47But they were all
08:49Shooting dope
08:50And you know
08:51It was easy to get
08:52Very accessible
08:53And I just started from there
08:55I think I continued with it
08:59I was
08:59It's hard
09:01It's the boredom
09:02The loneliness
09:03I had never been out of
09:05Pittsburgh before in my life
09:06Other than to go to boot camp
09:07And whatever
09:08And I was rushed through
09:09All that so fast
09:10I didn't even know what happened
09:11And
09:12And I couldn't stand
09:14What was going on
09:15You know
09:16It was a way of blocking
09:18It was a way of forgetting
09:19Some of the atrocities
09:32That went on in Vietnam
09:34Some of them really
09:35Shouldn't be told
09:36This is Alonza Gibbs
09:39Wounded by mortar fire
09:40In Vietnam in 1966
09:42And decorated for bravery
09:44Some of the things
09:45That really pissed me off
09:46Is I had
09:48I was in
09:50Company B
09:512nd Battalion
09:52Infantry
09:53And there we had
09:55In our battalion
09:58We had a commander
09:59That didn't know
10:00How to call in airstrikes
10:02Did not know
10:03He did not know
10:04How to call in airstrikes
10:06And he was too proud
10:07And too pompous
10:08To let his forward observer
10:09Do it
10:09And he called in airstrikes
10:11And a third of his company
10:12Was either wounded or killed
10:14In order to cover up
10:16That fuck up that he did
10:18They gave him
10:19A congressional medal of honor
10:20Which really just
10:22Completely pissed me off
10:24And I had friends to die in that
10:25Friends to be wounded in that
10:27And some of them are right here
10:29In Philadelphia
10:30Crazy as bed bugs
10:31The treatment that
10:34Some of the people did
10:35To the actual people
10:36That we were fighting
10:37I couldn't go along with
10:41I saw people interrogated
10:43And because they wouldn't answer
10:46They were thrown out
10:46Of helicopters
10:47Did you see them?
10:49I've seen that
10:50These prisoners
10:55That were captured one time
10:57They've got a substance
10:59Called detonating cord
11:00Debt cord
11:01Okay
11:02And I've seen them
11:03Wrap the debt cord around
11:05Three guys
11:06And because they wouldn't
11:08Answer the questions
11:09They ignited it
11:10And blew their heads off
11:11Uh
11:14We had a battalion commander
11:16Named Colonel
11:17I believe he's
11:18General
11:18Now
11:19I believe he's a
11:21Sissy
11:21But anyway
11:22He issued all of his hatchets
11:24And offered a case of whiskey
11:26For the first person
11:27To chop someone's head off
11:28Okay
11:30And this happened
11:31Someone actually did
11:32Get their head chopped off
11:33And this happened
11:34In Ben Cat
11:35And this was the latter part
11:37Of 1965
11:38And the dude that did it
11:40His name was
11:40From Second Battoon
11:42B Company Second Battoon
11:43And he went in there
11:45And he so hyped up
11:46And actually chopped
11:47Off
11:48A Vietnamese's head
11:51You would see some of the guys
11:53Walking around with ears
11:54You know
11:55As a symbol of the kills
11:56That they had did
11:57And this isn't
11:58We're supposed to be
11:59The American fighting people
12:01We don't do this kind of thing
12:03Vietnam was a teenager's war
12:07The average age
12:08Of an American soldier
12:09Was 19
12:10They were bred mostly
12:12On a lethal innocence
12:13Which needs simple
12:14Hollywood heroes
12:15And simple
12:16Hollywood bad guys
12:18A faith that says
12:19Their nation is more virtuous
12:21Than any other nation
12:23I remember the mother
12:24Of one veteran
12:25Saying that she thought
12:26Her son had gone to fight
12:27Somewhere near Cuba
12:29Where there were communists
12:30Real close and threatening
12:32When her son
12:34Finally came home
12:34In a box
12:35She hung the flag
12:37Upside down
12:38And people said
12:39She was a crank
12:39And when the surviving veterans
12:42Came home
12:42And began to tell
12:44The secrets of Vietnam
12:45That it was really a war
12:47Of rampant technology
12:48Against people
12:49That collateral damage
12:51Was a military term
12:53For the slaughter of civilians
12:54People didn't want to listen
12:56Because it broke the faith
12:58And for this
12:59The veterans have paid a price
13:01Sixty percent
13:03Of all combat soldiers
13:05Are alcoholics
13:06Forty percent
13:07Are drug addicts
13:09Sixty percent
13:10Of all black veterans
13:11Can't find a job
13:12Thousands are in prison
13:14And their divorce rate
13:16And their suicide rate
13:17Is the highest in America
13:19The report
13:20Which gives these facts
13:21Was suppressed
13:23By the government
13:23Because what it says
13:25Breaks the faith
13:27The politicians never said
13:29The war was right or wrong
13:30The politicians never had the guts
13:32To come out
13:33And either declare war
13:35Or get the hell out
13:35They were hoping
13:37That the war would go away in time
13:38And they're treating the veterans
13:40The social war
13:41Of the Vietnam veterans
13:42That stigma of the war
13:43Has now eroded
13:44Onto the veterans
13:45The responsibility
13:46Of explaining the war
13:47Has fallen onto
13:48The veterans shoulders
13:49Those politicians
13:50Are now retired
13:51With big paychecks
13:53Now who's asking them anything
13:55What guilt's on their shoulder
13:57What responsibility
13:57The problem of the war
13:59The stigma of the war
14:00Now falls to the veterans
14:01America's uncomfortable
14:03With the Vietnam war
14:04But you gotta heal from that war
14:05Just like a wound
14:06You gotta scrub it
14:08You gotta debride it
14:09You gotta examine it
14:10And you'll cleanse from it
14:11What they've done
14:12With the Vietnam war
14:13And because of that
14:15It's fallen on the Vietnam veteran
14:16Is taken the wound
14:17And putting it in the closet
14:19What's happened
14:20Is it's festered
14:21It's festered
14:22And it's hurt
14:23The Vietnam veteran
14:24Do you realize
14:26That we've had 55,000
14:2755,000 suicides
14:29As many people
14:31As we lost in Vietnam
14:32That's an atrocity
14:3555,000 suicides
14:3755,000 of Vietnam
14:38Are veterans
14:39Yes
14:39Now my god
14:41How many people
14:42Have to kill
14:42Commit suicide
14:43Kill themselves
14:44You know
14:46It's
14:47Myself
14:48My own brother
14:49He spent one year
14:51In combat
14:52Three years
14:53With a chemical warfare unit
14:56In Vietnam
14:56Four years total
14:57I was the
14:58Casualty of the war
15:00Directly
15:00I came home
15:01In a stretcher
15:02I got shot in the back
15:04Both legs
15:05Stabbed in the left arm
15:06I was paralyzed
15:07In my right hand
15:08With a piece of
15:09Shrap metal
15:10I was wounded
15:11In the neck
15:12The head
15:13Forty percent
15:15Of my body
15:15Was burnt
15:15With napalm
15:16I was hurt
15:18I was crushed
15:19Could I explain
15:21The war
15:21When I come home
15:22No
15:22I remember
15:23The New York Times
15:24Calling me
15:24Talking to me
15:26And they said
15:26Captain Christian
15:28What was my philosophy
15:29On the war
15:30I'd only graduated
15:31From high school
15:32So I didn't know
15:32What my philosophy
15:33Was supposed to be
15:35I told him
15:36That I feel
15:38As though
15:38We should either
15:39Fight a war
15:39To win
15:39Or get the hell out
15:41Yeah
15:41With that
15:43I was restricted
15:43To my ward
15:44Restricted to my room
15:48As a hospital patient
15:49And here
15:50They'd bring me out
15:50One day
15:51To give me a medal
15:51And the next day
15:53They'd keep me
15:53Under restrictions
15:54It was sad
15:55So that was how
15:56A captain faced the war
15:58How do you think
15:58Many of the
15:59Enlisted guys faced it
16:01You look at it
16:03You look at the thing
16:03You think
16:04Geez
16:04Was there a method
16:05For them coming back
16:06One at a time
16:07Not like in
16:08World War I
16:09Where everyone came back
16:10In mass
16:11And they formed
16:12Their veterans organizations
16:13Was there any real
16:15Madness to the politicians
16:16In bringing them back
16:18And letting them
16:18Infiltrate back
16:19In society
16:19One day in a war
16:21One day back here
16:22How simple it all seemed
16:27When General Pershing's
16:28Doughboys marched home
16:29From Europe in 1919
16:31The military parade
16:33At the end of war
16:34Has always been
16:35A grand delusion
16:36Especially in countries
16:37Themselves not ravaged
16:39By war
16:39Like television movies
16:41In which blood and gore
16:42Are never seen
16:43The parades of the past
16:45Were great demonstrations
16:46Of vital victorious manhood
16:48Vietnam changed all that
16:50Perhaps forever
16:51And the longing of some
16:53Vietnam veterans
16:54For parades and flags
16:55Can never be realized
16:57Because they brought home
16:58The truth of war
16:59Imagine a parade for them
17:02Led by human crabs
17:03Without limbs
17:04Men without faces
17:06Men with minds
17:07And testicles blown away
17:09Frail young men
17:10Addicted and dying
17:11From cancers
17:12Caused by chemical warfare
17:14And behind them
17:15In endless formation
17:16Vietnamese women
17:18And children
17:18And old men
17:19Zapped by the friendly fire
17:21Of napalm
17:23And who would take
17:24The salute for such a parade
17:25The generals
17:26The politicians
17:27The arms manufacturers
17:29Not likely
17:31Last year
17:34The 52 American hostages
17:35Were welcomed home
17:36From Iran
17:37In one of the greatest
17:38Parades of all
17:39It was nicely made
17:41For television
17:41In which commercials
17:43For Pepsi
17:43And Japanese cars
17:44Were certainly not
17:45Out of place
17:46Because broken bodies
17:48And impermissible pain
17:50Were not on display
17:51Of course
17:52They were officially
17:53Approved heroes
17:54Who would embarrass no one
17:56With confessions
17:56Of guilt
17:57Or failure
17:58Victory in their case
18:00Having been bought
18:01Conveniently
18:02With money
18:03What does the city
18:04As big as this
18:06Now provide
18:07For the veterans
18:08The city directly
18:10Actually nothing
18:12Nothing
18:12The mayor appointed
18:13One person
18:14What's he do
18:15To be the commissioner
18:16Of veterans affairs
18:18But he doesn't have
18:20An office
18:21He doesn't have
18:22A staff
18:22And there's nothing
18:23He can do
18:24I never met
18:26Bob Mueller
18:26In Vietnam
18:27But I vividly
18:28Remember him
18:29Being thrown out
18:30Of the Republican
18:30Party convention
18:31In Miami Beach
18:32Nine years ago
18:34In his wheelchair
18:35Bob a marine officer
18:37Was shot through
18:38The spine
18:39And is a decorated
18:40Hero in the
18:41John Wayne tradition
18:42But alas
18:43There he was
18:44Spoiling it all
18:45By shouting
18:45At President Nixon
18:46That the war
18:47In Vietnam
18:48Could never be won
18:49Bob Mueller
18:51Now runs
18:52Vietnam Veterans
18:53Of America
18:54From a seedy
18:55Office in New York
18:56And with barely
18:57Enough money
18:57To pay the rent
18:58In contrast
18:59To the government
19:00Veterans Administration
19:02Whose enormous
19:03Budget
19:03Goes mostly to those
19:05Who went to war
19:06And came back
19:07Winners
19:08Bob some
19:11Veterans have told
19:12Me that people
19:13Have blamed them
19:14For losing the war
19:15That really hurts
19:16Let me give a sense
19:17Of perspective
19:18On this
19:18Because it's
19:19Very important
19:19You know
19:20The whole fervor
19:24With which
19:25My generation
19:26Was willing
19:27To go fight
19:28Is totally
19:30Misunderstood
19:31With the Vietnam
19:32Era
19:33More than
19:3580% of the guys
19:36That wound up
19:38In the military
19:38Enlisted
19:39Okay
19:40More than 80%
19:41Enlisted
19:41In the second
19:42World war
19:43Two thirds
19:44Of all of those
19:45Were drafted
19:46So the truth
19:47About soldiers
19:48Who went to Vietnam
19:48Was very different
19:49From what people
19:50Understood
19:50They understood
19:51To be a drafted
19:52War
19:52In fact
19:53You're saying
19:53That two thirds
19:54Of those who went
19:55Volunteered to go
19:56Like yourself
19:57Yeah
19:57More than 80%
19:58Enlisted
19:58You know
19:59That point
20:01Is
20:02Totally misunderstood
20:03There was a time
20:05In 1964
20:07In 1965
20:091966
20:10In 1967
20:12Where every evening
20:14We had Walter Cronkite
20:15On CBS Network News
20:17Extolling the virtues
20:19Of our fleet in the Pacific
20:21And our presence in Vietnam
20:22We had Lyndon Johnson
20:24Saying hey
20:25We're just about there
20:27We had your Robert McNamara's
20:28We had your General Westmoreland's
20:30America supported
20:32Our involvement
20:34But everybody only remembers
20:35When the Tet Offensive
20:37Came in 68
20:38And wait a minute
20:39How come the Vietnamese
20:40Are able to come into
20:41The U.S. Embassy in Saigon
20:42When the American casualties
20:44Were continuing to increase
20:46That America lost favor
20:48With its involvement in Vietnam
20:49So we only remember 68, 69, 70
20:52And then we really started
20:53To extract ourselves after that
20:55But they forget that
20:56For all of those years
20:57It was rah-rah America
20:59Rah-rah involvement
21:00And we
21:01Accordingly
21:02Those of us who came of age
21:03In that period of time
21:04Went as we felt
21:05Our obligation as a citizen
21:07In this country required
21:08Of course
21:10Now that history
21:11Has had some time to come by
21:12That's all changed
21:14When G.I.s came back
21:15From World War II
21:16They had the G.I. Bill
21:18Which was almost revolutionary
21:19Gave them special privileges
21:21In housing, health
21:22And all kinds of things
21:23Now why haven't the Vietnam veterans
21:25Had something like that?
21:28It's a lot of things
21:29But I'll try and reduce it
21:30To its essence
21:31Number one
21:34We did not have
21:39A willing
21:40Base of support
21:42To meet our needs
21:44Okay
21:45We had spent
21:47I think
21:48165 billion dollars
21:50In pursuing our war
21:52In Vietnam
21:54Guys come back
21:55Like myself
21:56And I required
21:57A lot of medical care
21:58In the hospitals
21:59A lot of acute medical care
22:01Neurosurgeons were involved
22:03Therapists were involved
22:04I needed equipment
22:05I needed a lot of things
22:08The hospitals in this country
22:09For the veterans
22:11Had long ago
22:12Stopped
22:14Being hospitals
22:15For what we came back
22:16From Vietnam with
22:17In the way of medical needs
22:18Acute medical care
22:20The hospitals
22:21Are populated now
22:23By veterans
22:24Of the First World War
22:25And the Second World War
22:27They have become
22:28Glorified nursing homes
22:29But beyond
22:31Direct medical care
22:33The G.I. Bill
22:36The education program
22:37That was afforded
22:38The veterans
22:38Of the Second World War
22:40Was very reluctantly
22:41Brought back
22:42By Lyndon Johnson
22:44He said in 1966
22:45That he was going to veto
22:47The bringing back
22:49Of the G.I. Bill
22:49For the Vietnam veteran
22:50Because it cost
22:51And the way they did it
22:53Was
22:53Back in Korea
22:55The G.I.s
22:57Were getting
22:57A hundred and ten dollars
22:58A month
22:59Back in 1955
23:00When they stopped
23:01With the Korean veteran
23:02They brought it back
23:04In 1966
23:05For the Vietnam veteran
23:06At ten dollars less
23:07A flat hundred dollars
23:09A month
23:09That's all
23:10A hundred dollars
23:11A hundred dollars a month
23:12Even though
23:12A decade earlier
23:13It had been
23:14A hundred and ten
23:14For the Korean war
23:15Better
23:15And they couldn't
23:16Afford it
23:16We had spent
23:18A lot of money
23:18In fighting the Vietnam War
23:20When we used to
23:21Petition for health care
23:22For the G.I. Bill
23:23For employment programs
23:25They would cry poverty
23:26They'd say
23:27It was fiscally irresponsible
23:29In 1972
23:30When Nixon vetoed
23:32The Veterans Medical Care
23:33Expansion Act
23:34He said
23:35I am vetoing this bill
23:36Because it is
23:37Fiscally irresponsible
23:39And inflationary
23:40All right
23:41Now can you imagine
23:42What that does
23:43To a guy like me
23:44I was a marine
23:46Infantry officer
23:47I had the battleship
23:49New Jersey
23:50Fire in support of me
23:52Once when I went
23:52Into the DMZ
23:53I had jet strikes
23:54One after the other
23:55I had an hour and a half
23:56Of heavy artillery
23:57Many many times
23:59It was routine
24:00For me to spend
24:00A hundred thousand dollars
24:02A day to kill people
24:03Then I get shot
24:04In the process
24:05Come back home
24:06And my government
24:07Tells me that
24:08It's fiscally irresponsible
24:09And inflationary
24:10To provide adequate
24:12Medical care
24:12In a hospital
24:13To get a G.I. Bill
24:15That's anywhere near
24:15What was given
24:16To veterans
24:17Of the second world war
24:18Or even Korea
24:18For that matter
24:19That we can't get
24:20An employment program
24:21So that we can be
24:23On parity
24:23With those of our generation
24:25That didn't stop
24:26Their life
24:27To take two or three
24:28Or four years
24:29Into the military
24:30You always hear
24:31Before the congress
24:32A veteran is a veteran
24:34Is a veteran
24:35The bullets were
24:36The same on Tinian
24:37Or in Europe
24:37As they were
24:38In Saigon
24:39Or the DMZ
24:40Nobody's arguing
24:42That a bullet
24:42Isn't going to kill you
24:43Just as dead
24:44In the second world war
24:45As it did in Vietnam
24:46But what we're saying
24:47Is all that goes around
24:49The fighting
24:50Alright
24:50That which you've got
24:51To look to
24:52To justify it
24:53To understand it
24:54To be able to live with it
24:55It's not there
24:56For the Vietnam veteran
24:57And that's why
24:58A veteran is not
24:59A veteran is not
25:00A veteran
25:00It's a different experience
25:02We're just not there
25:06When I got out
25:22Of the service
25:22I was 20
25:23And I had a big old
25:25Fat old doctor
25:26Sit there and tell me
25:27It's nowhere in the world
25:28That someone 20 years
25:30Old could be disabled
25:31How does he work
25:35That logic out
25:35If you've just spent
25:36Two years in Vietnam
25:37I don't know
25:39But this is what
25:40Was told
25:40To me
25:41You ended up
25:43You ended up
25:43Let me just jump ahead there
25:46What compensation
25:48What is the total compensation
25:50That you now have
25:51For all your injuries
25:52I get $48 a month
25:56For my injuries
25:58I'll just put that into
26:00Sterling
26:01$48 a month
26:03About 20 pounds
26:04A month
26:04You get
26:05That's nothing
26:06That's nothing
26:06Right
26:06No nothing at all
26:08And I just got that
26:09In the last two years
26:12You've only had that
26:14For two years
26:15And you left
26:16Vietnam
26:16Fourteen years ago
26:18Yes
26:19Yes
26:20What happened
26:21In the other 12 years
26:22You've had nothing
26:23I've been fighting
26:24For
26:24For compensation
26:26All that time
26:27The veterans administration
26:29Isn't for the veteran
26:31It's not for the veteran
26:34It's for the system
26:35And they give us
26:37Nothing at all
26:37All Vietnam veterans
26:40Have been shafted
26:42You know
26:43We've been screwed
26:44Well
26:45And will continue
26:46To be screwed
26:47Regardless of whether
26:48They're black or white
26:49Regardless
26:49If they're black or white
26:50Or chicanos
26:51Because there was
26:52A lot of chicanos
26:52There too
26:53A lot of minorities
26:55Were there
26:55And we're all being had
26:57They had
26:58No real programs
27:00For the drug addicted
27:01Or drug abusing veteran
27:02Coming back from Vietnam
27:04Their whole idea
27:06For the drug addicted veteran
27:07Was to get them
27:07Some tranquilizers
27:08Put them on a
27:0921 day
27:10Lock up
27:11Or detoxification
27:12And put them back
27:12In the street
27:13And
27:14That was fine
27:16That it helped you
27:17Clean up a little bit
27:18And get your health
27:18Back together again
27:19But there was no
27:20Counseling
27:21There was
27:22Nothing at all
27:23In that
27:24You know
27:24It was just a period
27:25To come in
27:25And try and regroup
27:27And then go back
27:27And start all over again
27:28You were wounded
27:31Weren't you
27:31Yeah
27:33I was doing
27:33A Tet Offensive
27:34In 1968
27:34And I got hit
27:36In the back
27:37And through the arm
27:37I started working on a statue
27:40About two and a half years ago
27:42And I was asked to build it
27:46And I was just to make a statue of it
27:48It took two years
27:50And out of the two years
27:52Literally about 13 months
27:54Of the two years
27:55I had worked night and day on it
27:57Which was driving my wife nuts
27:59This seven foot sculpture
28:02Is Mike Salsona's gift
28:04To the memory of his comrades
28:05Mike lost both legs
28:07And has received no compensation
28:09For a lame hand and deafness
28:11He uses his artificial legs
28:14Often just to conceal the fact
28:16That he fought in Vietnam
28:17And he walks with pain
28:19The funny bitter story
28:21Which Mike and his wife Beryl
28:22Tell about his battle
28:23To park his car
28:24Says much about an attitude
28:26Which all the veterans have to face
28:28How many parking tickets have you had?
28:31I lost $7,000
28:32How many does this represent?
28:33$7,000
28:34$7,000
28:35$7,000 worth of parking tickets
28:38When did you begin this war?
28:41As soon as I got home
28:42As soon as I got home
28:44It says I had to drive
28:45Yeah
28:45So what would happen?
28:49You would get a parking ticket
28:51Refuse to pay it
28:52Or not even bother sending it in
28:54Yeah
28:54And then I'd go down the next year
28:57When I had to register the car
28:59Yeah
29:00And I'd tell them
29:01I'm missing both legs
29:02Blah, blah, blah
29:03This and that
29:03And do a little double talking
29:06And then they'd give me my registration
29:07Yeah
29:08So after about nine years
29:11The tickets just kept on building up
29:14And building up
29:15And building up
29:15Until last year when we went in
29:18You know, we gave them the plate number
29:20Went in the computer and came out
29:22People, you know, you've got to be crazy
29:24You know, you want to register your car
29:26You always
29:27You know, the parking tickets are worth more than a car
29:29Yeah
29:30So we went back and forth
29:32Trying to negotiate for about an hour
29:35And then they said
29:37Well look, just get out of here
29:39You know, we don't need you
29:40We're trying to help people over here
29:42Just get out of here
29:43So I said, my car's not registered
29:45And I'm missing both legs
29:47Don't you understand?
29:48And they just kept on going
29:49And they
29:49So I took my legs off
29:51And it was at a desk like this
29:53I took them off
29:54And
29:54It's the judge's chambers
29:55In the judge's chambers
29:56And the judge and his secretary
29:59Just like
30:00They just turned red and left
30:01You know
30:01And I took them off
30:03And I put them on the desk
30:04On the judge's desk?
30:06Right
30:06And I sit near my underwears
30:07You know
30:08And
30:09And
30:10They came in
30:13And they just tried to explain to me
30:15Their situation
30:15I understood their situation
30:18But they didn't understand mine
30:20Well they tried to say
30:21Pay us even five dollars on that
30:24And we'll give you your registration
30:25He said, I'm not paying a penny
30:27I shouldn't have to pay parking tickets
30:29So finally they came in
30:30They said, okay
30:31You can have your registration
30:32The parking tickets stay
30:34He wanted all the parking tickets removed
30:36Yeah
30:36I weakened
30:37And I said
30:38Let's do it, Michael
30:40So everybody's talking to him
30:42And saying
30:43This is your best deal
30:44You're not going to get another deal like this
30:46So finally we left
30:48With the registration at about 4.30
30:50All the offices were closed
30:52The place was deserted
30:53And we're wheeling him out
30:54In an office chair
30:55Because he couldn't put his legs on
30:57And
30:58After that
31:00They removed
31:02Well that day
31:03They removed the parking tickets down
31:04From 7,000 to 1,000
31:07And then
31:08In subsequent talks with them
31:10They removed it down
31:11I think it's now down to $75
31:13All those tickets
31:14That's a great victory
31:16And next year
31:17We'll get it down to nothing
31:18$7,000 down to $75
31:19Yeah
31:20I had a lady at the parking violations
31:22I told her
31:22I said
31:22Look I'm a Vietnam veteran
31:24This and that
31:24And she said
31:25Unfortunately you were in a war
31:26That nobody really cared about
31:28Now
31:29She said that
31:30She said that to me
31:32Not that it really
31:33It didn't really bother me
31:34But
31:35Keep it to yourself
31:38You know
31:39I was hitchhiking back
31:42From Philly Naval Hospital
31:43And I had a cane
31:46And my uniform on
31:47And I had my braces on
31:48I had some braces on
31:49My arm and all
31:50And a van went past me
31:52And then they stopped
31:54About 20 feet past me
31:55To pick me up
31:56And I ran up to the van
31:57And just as I got up
31:57To the front of the van
31:58They threw all over my uniform
32:00They had Coca-Cola
32:02And ketchup
32:03And whatever
32:03They threw it all over me
32:05And pulled away
32:05I think I have
32:08A silent sense of rage
32:12The need to
32:17Scream at everyone
32:19And tell them
32:20Wake up
32:21They're home
32:23They're here
32:24They love
32:25They cry
32:25They feel
32:26They're in pain
32:28And why doesn't anyone care
32:30The first time
32:31That I went
32:32Outside of a hospital
32:33And it was a business day
32:35In the middle of the week
32:36And I'll never forget
32:38How stunned I was
32:40And I felt like
32:42Just shouting
32:43Wait a minute
32:44It's business as usual
32:47Everybody's going about
32:48Their jobs
32:49Don't you understand
32:51There's a war going on
32:52One, two, three
32:53This is Bob Mueller
32:54At the Republican Party
32:55Convention in Miami Beach
32:561972
32:58We don't want your
32:59Fucking war
33:00One, two, three
33:01Four
33:02We don't want your
33:03Fucking war
33:03One, two, three
33:05Four
33:05We don't want your
33:06Fucking war
33:07One, two, three
33:08Four
33:09We don't want your
33:10Fucking war
33:10We feel that it's our
33:12Patriotic duty to stop
33:13This war as Vietnam
33:14Veterans we served over there
33:15So we're going to read
33:16This statement to
33:17President Richard M. Nixon
33:18We have fought in your war
33:20And lost
33:21We have been maimed
33:22And crippled
33:22For the rest of our lives
33:23We have lost many of our
33:25Brothers in this war
33:25We have killed men
33:26Women and children
33:27Every day we ask why
33:30We cannot live with this
33:31Now is the time
33:33For all good presidents
33:33To come to the aid
33:34Of his men
33:35Four years ago
33:36You ran on a peace platform
33:37Four years have passed
33:38And this corrupt
33:39And immoral war
33:40Still goes on
33:41You have lied
33:42To your country
33:42We now strip ourselves
33:45Of those medals
33:46For courage and heroism
33:48Those decorations
33:50For wounds we suffer
33:52We cast these away
33:53As symbols of dishonor
33:56Shame and inhumanity
33:58And dedicate ourselves now
34:00To the peace and brotherhood
34:02This nation once held
34:05As its heritage
34:07There was much shallowness
34:09In rhetoric there
34:10But the view of authority
34:12The so-called consensus
34:13Against which all other opinions
34:15Are measured as biased
34:17Or politically tainted
34:18Was challenged as never before
34:20Both by those who fought
34:22And those who did not
34:23For many people in America
34:25And Britain
34:26That was the true meaning
34:28Of the Vietnam years
34:29An alternative to corrupt power
34:31And war
34:32Was seen as practical
34:34As it was idealistic
34:35People who went to prison
34:37For a principle
34:38Were no longer eccentrics
34:39But genuine moral heroes
34:41So too were those soldiers
34:43I knew
34:44Who deserted not out of fear
34:46But in disgust
34:46Who refused orders
34:48And fired intentionally
34:50Over the heads of an enemy
34:51They respected more than their own
34:53But where is that moral outrage now?
34:57Oh yes
34:58Bob Muller in his wheelchair
34:59Was briefly fashionable
35:00Indeed he was invited
35:02To meet Henry Kissinger
35:03And the big names
35:04In oil
35:05And banking
35:06And war
35:07David Packard
35:08One of the richest men
35:09In armaments
35:10Told him
35:10Bob
35:11We're going to help you veterans
35:13It's almost a year
35:16To the day
35:17Since I had that meeting
35:19I've written him
35:20No less than five times
35:22I've called his office
35:24No less than ten times
35:25And I have never
35:27Gotten
35:28Even the courtesy
35:29Of a reply
35:29Or a return phone call
35:31Total
35:32Absolute
35:33Silence
35:34And he promised to help
35:35He promised to help
35:36But for a guy like that
35:38Who was
35:39Undersecretary of defense
35:40In the Vietnam war
35:41Who was one of the ten richest
35:43Individuals in the country
35:44Who made his money
35:46On defense contracts
35:47And who today
35:48Is still in the papers
35:49All the time
35:50Talking about the need
35:51For a stronger national defense
35:52In this country
35:52To absolutely reject
35:55Any accountability
35:57Responsibility
35:58Or anything
35:59For that generation
36:01Of soldiers
36:02That he was a principal part
36:04In sending off to war
36:05Is to me
36:06Beyond belief
36:08President Carter
36:09When he first came into office
36:11February 1977
36:13He promised
36:15In his first fireside chat
36:16The top priority
36:18In our job training programs
36:19Would go to young veterans
36:21Of the Vietnam war
36:22Unemployment is much higher
36:24Among veterans
36:25Than among others
36:26Of the same age
36:27Who did not serve
36:28In the military
36:29And what's happened
36:30They've been dismal failures
36:31Do you say you're a veteran
36:33When you go for a job
36:34I did it one time
36:36Now I try to delete
36:38That part of my life
36:39Because I think
36:40That it works against me
36:42To say that I was a veteran
36:43In Vietnam
36:43The first time
36:45Bob Mueller
36:46Was invited to the White House
36:47President Carter
36:48Did not appear
36:49His media manager
36:50Later described it as
36:52A no vote situation
36:53Last year
36:55They had National Vietnam Veterans Week
36:59And I believe
37:00I think it was about 400
37:01Who were invited
37:02To the White House
37:04And one young man
37:06I think summed it up
37:07And he said
37:07We're just getting
37:09Lemonade and sandwiches
37:11The POWs
37:13Got a big dinner
37:16What did the president say to you?
37:21We love you
37:22That's what he said
37:23In August 1980
37:26During the presidential election campaign
37:28Ronald Reagan said this
37:30To me it's the height of hypocrisy
37:32For the Carter administration
37:34To repeatedly tell us
37:36How much we owe
37:36Our Vietnam veterans
37:38And then recommend
37:39A stingy 10% increase
37:41In the GI Bill
37:42We have been shabby
37:44In our treatment
37:45Of those who return
37:46They deserve our gratitude
37:47Our respect
37:49And our continuing concern
37:51Our war
37:52Was a noble cause
37:54In March 1981
37:56President Reagan
37:58Asked Congress
37:59To cut programs
38:00Specially designed
38:02To help Vietnam veterans
38:03Find jobs
38:04Finish their education
38:06And be treated
38:07For drug addiction
38:08And alcoholism
38:09A few years ago
38:10After long struggle
38:1191 veterans
38:13Counseling centers
38:14Were established
38:15In the poorest parts
38:16Of cities and towns
38:18Where most Vietnam veterans live
38:20They've become
38:21A small salvation
38:22For those for whom
38:24The noble cause
38:25Remains a nightmare
38:27Mr. Reagan
38:29Wants them all
38:30Closed down
38:31They want America
38:33To open up their arms
38:34And say
38:35Don't go away
38:37Tell me about your pain
38:38Bobby's never talked to me
38:41I think the most
38:43He has said
38:44Was I think in October
38:47Of last year
38:48When you saw
38:49The Life magazine
38:50There was a Life magazine
38:51Article on
38:51I think it was
38:53Six men
38:55Who were photographed
38:56Ten years ago
38:57And they were photographed
38:58Again in 79
39:00And we were looking
39:02At the photographs
39:03We were in a football field
39:05And Bobby just started to cry
39:08And I didn't understand why
39:09And he said
39:11Virginia
39:11Just look at their eyes
39:12The pain is still there
39:15The horror
39:16They're ten years older
39:18But the pain is still brand new
39:20I didn't know what to do
39:22So I just let him cry
39:24Because that was the first time
39:25I had seen the pain
39:27The only reason I believe
39:32We've had success
39:33In organizing the Vietnam veteran
39:36Is because of one issue
39:38And that's the chemical
39:40That was used in Vietnam
39:41To knock out the jungles
39:43And that we can finally say
39:45To every single guy
39:46That serves in Vietnam
39:47Hey, listen
39:49You better pay attention
39:50To what we have to say
39:51Because your life
39:52Might well depend
39:53On whether or not
39:55You were affected by this
39:56And whether or not
39:57You're going to get cancer
39:58Or a kidney problem
39:59Or liver dysfunction
40:00Or have a child
40:01With a birth defect
40:02It was the defoliant
40:03It's called Agent Orange
40:05It now seems possible
40:07That at least as many
40:08Veterans and their children
40:09May die or suffer deformities
40:11As were killed or wounded
40:13During the war
40:13As a result of a chemical
40:15Herbicide used in Vietnam
40:17It is Agent Orange
40:19And contains a poison
40:21Called dioxin
40:22Which is a thousand times
40:23More destructive
40:24Than thalidomide
40:26Britain still permits
40:27The use of this poison
40:28As a weed killer
40:29Almost eleven million gallons
40:32Of it were dumped on Vietnam
40:33This is Koo Chi
40:35Near Saigon
40:36Which I remember
40:37As thick forest
40:39Today it's a wilderness
40:40With a soil and water
40:42Poison for generations
40:43The spraying was called
40:45Operation Hades
40:47And when the first birth
40:48Deformities appeared
40:49All they did was change
40:51The name to
40:52Operation Ranch Hand
40:54And the spraying continued
40:56These terribly deformed
40:59Children were filmed
41:00In 1979
41:01By director Michael Beckham
41:03And a world in action team
41:05It was the seeds
41:06Of this unique horror
41:07That the GIs
41:09Brought home with them
41:10Most of the Agent Orange
41:16Was made here in Michigan
41:17By the Dow Chemical Company
41:19Best known for napalm
41:21The company is being sued
41:23For billions of dollars
41:24Compensation by veterans
41:26And although the company
41:27Says the onus is on the veterans
41:29To prove their case
41:30It has brought its own lawsuit
41:32Against the U.S. government
41:33Claiming that the Pentagon
41:35Failed to protect its soldiers
41:37Against the effects
41:38Of the chemical
41:39That's what I looked like
41:42When I had hair
41:43Before cancer
41:44In April
41:46It'll be two years
41:48That they
41:48They gave me
41:50Two to five years
41:51To live
41:51And you know
41:53I eventually
41:55End up paralyzed
41:56And blind
41:57And they
41:58Projected
41:59Neurological
42:00Regression
42:01Until death
42:02Charlie Hartz
42:04Was a soldier
42:04Exposed to Agent Orange
42:06Charlie's imminent death
42:07Is certain
42:08His four children
42:09Were all born
42:10With birth defects
42:11Is there likely
42:15To be another Vietnam
42:16Could it happen
42:18To this country again
42:19Yeah
42:19Yeah
42:20You ask Americans today
42:22What defines our foreign policy
42:24When is it
42:25That we're going to draw the line
42:26And you're going to get
42:27A different response
42:28From everybody you talk to
42:29If we don't know
42:30Where we're going
42:31Is it any wonder
42:33That our allies
42:34As well as our potential adversaries
42:36Are confused
42:37And with their confusion
42:38Nervous
42:38This book
42:41Is a collection
42:42Of New York Times
42:43Front pages
42:44Which trace
42:45The American involvement
42:46In Vietnam
42:47And reading it now
42:49Is an eerie experience
42:50The same headlines
42:52Are appearing today
42:53The same jargon
42:54Such as escalation
42:55And light at the end
42:56Of the tunnel
42:57The same delusions
42:59Delete Vietnam
43:00And write in El Salvador
43:01And the stories
43:03Seem almost identical
43:04Like the politicians
43:06Then
43:06Kennedy
43:07Johnson
43:07And Nixon
43:08The politicians
43:09Now
43:10Haig
43:10And Reagan
43:11See the world
43:12In the same
43:13Arrogant
43:14Simplistic terms
43:15Speaking of dominoes
43:17As if nations
43:17Are mere blocks of wood
43:19Not societies
43:20Riven with their own
43:21Differences
43:22And animosities
43:23Today
43:24As before
43:25Honest men
43:26Pay with their careers
43:27The American ambassador
43:29To El Salvador
43:30Robert White
43:31Has said
43:32That the war
43:32In that country
43:33Is caused by
43:34Social injustice
43:35And the real terrorists
43:37Are the regime
43:38Backed by Mr. Reagan
43:39And Mr. Haig
43:41And supported of course
43:42By the British government
43:43The security forces
43:45In El Salvador
43:45Have been responsible
43:47For the deaths
43:49Of thousands
43:50And thousands
43:51Of young people
43:52And
43:54They've executed them
43:58Just on the mere suspicion
43:59That they are leftists
44:01Or are sympathized
44:02With leftists
44:03Are we really going to send
44:05Military advisors
44:06In there
44:07To
44:08To be part
44:11Of that type
44:12Of machinery
44:13For speaking that truth
44:15The ambassador
44:15Was sacked
44:16Here is an announcement
44:18Of US advisors
44:19Going to Vietnam
44:21And of US troops
44:23Going to protect them
44:24The advisors
44:26Have already arrived
44:27In El Salvador
44:27As in Vietnam
44:29The people who are dying
44:30In the streets
44:31And jungles of El Salvador
44:32Are nameless stick figures
44:34On the television news
44:35Or between the commercials
44:37In a rerun Hollywood movie
44:38The American veterans
44:40Of Vietnam
44:41Have much in common
44:42With them
44:42For they too
44:44Have been declared
44:45Expendable
44:46Here in El Salvador
44:49That fable line
44:51Is being drawn again
44:52To keep out forces
44:53Which mysteriously
44:54Threaten the most
44:55Powerful nation on earth
44:56Or from the point of view
44:58Of the people
44:59Of Central America
45:00There is a feeling
45:01That change at last
45:03Is possible
45:03After years
45:04Of looted economies
45:05And American-backed tyrannies
45:08For the US advisors
45:09This might as well
45:10Be dear old Saigon
45:12As it was in Vietnam
45:14At the beginning
45:14The advisors
45:16Are to shoot back
45:16Only to protect themselves
45:18But then it's likely
45:20That US troops
45:21Will go in to protect them
45:22And to prop up
45:23A hated government
45:24As it was in Vietnam
45:25Mr. Reagan and Mr. Haig
45:28Say Moscow is fueling
45:30International terrorism
45:31But a report
45:32By even the CIA
45:33Says that is nonsense
45:34The Russians after all
45:36Have their very own
45:38Vietnam in Afghanistan
45:39Where napalm
45:40And gunships
45:41And other horrors
45:42Developed in Vietnam
45:43Are being studiously copied
45:45And that's yet another
45:47Brutal irony
45:48For America
45:52The real aim
45:53In its latest Vietnam
45:55Is to stand firm
45:56Hang tough
45:57In a country
45:58Where the option is soft
45:59As Mr. Haig would say
46:01And the fodder is plentiful
46:03This is film from Vietnam
46:10And El Salvador
46:11Can you tell the difference?
46:13Now that you're talking
46:31About going to war again
46:33Now that you've got
46:33A draft registration
46:35Brought back
46:35Now that you're talking
46:36About drawing the line
46:38In terms of
46:39When does America
46:40Go to war?
46:41For what reasons
46:42Does it go to war?
46:43Who carries the burden
46:44Going to war?
46:45You've got to talk about us
46:47Because we're the last ones
46:48That responded
46:49Missing from this film
46:52Are the other witnesses
46:53To the Vietnam period
46:54The Vietnamese
46:55We hear very little
46:57About them these days
46:58And the American veterans
46:59Speak little about them
47:00Perhaps because
47:02What was done over there
47:03Was so terrible
47:04That only the victims
47:06Can afford to speak about it
47:07Such has been
47:09The politics of vengeance
47:10That the people of Vietnam
47:12Are now almost completely isolated
47:14With only the waiting arms
47:16Of the Russians to turn to
47:18Whom they rightly distrust
47:20As much as they distrust
47:21Of the Americans
47:22The French
47:23The Japanese
47:24And the Chinese
47:25Who came to their country
47:27Selling noble causes
47:29So here is the news
47:31From Vietnam
47:31In the wake of the war's devastation
47:34There is now famine
47:35Rations are less than even
47:37During the war years
47:38About half the food needed
47:40For a healthy survival
47:42There is no milk anymore
47:44For children over the age of one
47:46And unexploded mines and bombs
47:49Kill children every day
47:51Like its refusal to help
47:53Its own victims of the war
47:54The American government
47:56Has denied all help
47:57To the people of Vietnam
47:58And so too
48:00Has the British government
48:01On the other hand
48:03Both governments
48:04Are building the greatest
48:05Military machine ever
48:06In preparation for a war
48:08That may well end all wars
48:10And for that one
48:12Heroes need not apply
48:14He was so psyched up
48:17During the training
48:18That people were begging
48:20To go to Vietnam
48:20I believe the domino theory
48:22For what they
48:23You know
48:23If Vietnam falls
48:24Then Laos will fall
48:25And then Cambodia
48:26And you know
48:26Eventually they'll be
48:27You know
48:28Hitting the beach
48:28Out in L.A.
48:29But you know
48:31That's all I knew about Vietnam
48:32How do you feel about that now?
48:34Oh it's absurd
48:35That's ridiculous
48:36I don't think anybody
48:38Believes that anymore
48:39A lot of people died for it
48:41They certainly did
48:42Isn't that a shame?
48:44A soldier came down
48:51From Bien-Bien-Fu
48:53With silence in his eyes
48:56He told of many a night
49:00When fire was the sky
49:05He told of many a morning
49:09When the bravest of men
49:12Will cry
49:13Knowing that Satan's earth
49:18That many more would have to die
49:22Many more would have to die
49:27Many more would have to die
49:31Many more would have to die
49:36Many more would have to die
49:40Many more would have to die
49:43Many more would have to die
49:45Many more would have to die
49:45Many more would have to die
49:45Many more would have to die
49:46Many more would have to die
49:47Many more would have to die
49:48Many more would have to die
49:49Many more would have to die
49:49Many more would have to die
49:50Many more would have to die
49:51Many more would have to die
49:52Many more would have to die
49:53Many more would have to die
49:54Many more would have to die
49:55Many more would have to die
49:55Many more would have to die
49:56Many more would have to die
49:57Many more would have to die
49:57Many more would have to die
49:58Many more would have to die
