00:00Darren shares why it's so important to put in the effort over summer to keep your trees happy, healthy and most importantly fruitful.
00:10When selecting citrus trees for your home garden, don't be afraid to try something a little different.
00:15This Canotto citrus tree is a really compact grower and highly ornamental.
00:21And I'll show you how to turn your lawn dark green overnight, just in time for Christmas.
00:27You want this lawn looking outstanding and thanks to this new technology from Scots, you can do it.
00:50If you're taking on a weekend project or just needing a helping hand in the garden,
00:54there's one name that's fast becoming synonymous with getting the job done.
00:59And that's the Kanga Mini Loader.
01:01If you've got a weekend project or a landscaping job to do like moving soil or preparing for lawn,
01:07then a Kanga can make your job easy and quick.
01:10The best part is though, you don't actually need to own one.
01:13You can hire one and be up and running in minutes.
01:16They are designed to be easy to use, even for the first time operators.
01:21Within minutes you'll feel confident and in control.
01:25Hire includes access to a range of attachments, so no matter the task, digging, levelling, trenching, you've got it covered.
01:35Thanks Shane, good work, thank you.
01:36This is actually a smart, affordable way to get the job done.
01:40Think of it as a try before you buy.
01:44Cam has invited me to the Kennards Museum to see how far back the history between Kanga and Kennards goes.
01:51So Cam, Kennards and Kanga go way back.
01:54They sure do Matt, our customers have been hiring Kangas for decades.
01:58They're so reliable, they're tough and it's great for Aussies just to get a lot of stuff done.
02:04This baby here is just showing how far the innovation has come.
02:08So this is great innovation of its time, is it still going strong today?
02:12Yeah, this was first of its kind, still going strong today.
02:15And Kennards Hire and Kanga, two Australian owned businesses, are working together to making it better for the customers.
02:21That's awesome, so tell me a bit about your shared values and your relationship with Kanga and Kennards.
02:27Yeah, those family values really drive our businesses together and we work together on making these products better for our customers.
02:35Yeah, you can see that in the results.
02:37Yeah, our customers, it's all about making their job easy and Kanga are key to that.
02:41With loads of higher branches across Australia, customers like myself are finding real reassurance in testing it before buying it.
02:49And it makes sense, you try it, if it works for you, you can then buy it.
02:54Well, my job just got a whole lot easier because of this guy in the back, so I'm going to go and have some fun.
02:59For those of us that live with sandy soils, we don't realise the environment sometimes we live in is affected by the things that we do.
03:10Now, if you're in that situation, you're in an endless cycle of watering and feeding your plants because the nutrients drain through the soil.
03:23What most of us are not aware of is that sand is everywhere and those nutrients are moving through the sand, they eventually make it into our river systems causing all sorts of environmental problems.
03:41But the good news is we've learnt as we've gone over the years, we've got better fertilisers and we've found ways to improve our soil that stops that leaching.
03:52This is a once off soil treatment that can be applied that reduces the leaching dramatically.
03:57It increases the plants ability to use all the nutrients you're applying and improves moisture consistency.
04:04This is called soil solver, a unique kale and clay mix with carefully balanced minerals and also silt.
04:11And when mixed into sandy soils, it completely transforms their structure.
04:15Gavin Davis was a farmer looking to improve his yields from crops in barren sandy soils.
04:21And he experimented with amending the soils with clay.
04:24The results were a much healthier, higher yielding soil.
04:29When it comes to application rates, if you're putting organics into the soil, they tend to sort of disappear.
04:35But with your product, that doesn't happen.
04:37How many kilos are they using per square metre?
04:39Ten kilos a square metre of my product seems to get to the point where everybody's really happy.
04:44It gets rid of the hydrofabric problems, in other words, the water repellency.
04:47It gives enough minerals to give the results that people are looking for, for an easy care, no wetting agent, etc.
04:54One of the things that you can see here is the exotic plants are thriving.
04:58They love that soil improvement.
05:00Does it work as well for natives?
05:01Absolutely.
05:02The best results I've seen in a native garden is ten kilos of clay and nothing else.
05:07This is the third summer.
05:09Albany woolly bush, six foot high.
05:11Gee, well, two metres in the old language.
05:13Yeah.
05:14And it actually flowered after the second year.
05:16You've got very intensive gardens.
05:17You might actually increase it per square metre to what would you suggest?
05:21No problem going to 20 kilos a square metre.
05:24Science tells us that's the real rate.
05:26Mm-hm.
05:27And when you look at the science of it, yes, that's right.
05:29And that really helps a lot.
05:31Because every time you put a clay particle in, you're holding a humus particle in the soil.
05:36Now, I've been using this stuff for years.
05:39In fact, probably over 15 now.
05:41And it's improved the gutless, sandy soils I've got significantly.
05:45Now, the magic of this is, of course, the kaolin clay.
05:49What it does is it gets in between the sand particles and it binds them together.
05:53And with the silt and the rock minerals, it slows the movement of both moisture and nutrients through the soil, allowing your plants to take them up.
06:03And just like that, incorporating into the soil, you can now see the water is staying up around where the plant's roots will be when I plant this bed out.
06:11It's absolutely brilliant how it transforms the soil.
06:14And best of all, it does it permanently.
06:16You only have to do this once and the change is forever.
06:19Now, I understand the principles behind it.
06:22I understand the science that's been put into it.
06:24But the most important thing of all, for all of us, is that this actually works.
06:29Your plants and your garden will love it.
06:31If you want to know more about it, check out this website.
06:41We created this show so that you could have a beautiful garden at home without becoming a slave to it.
06:48Now, whether you're a beginner or an expert, our Facebook page is the perfect resource to help you have the most beautiful garden in the street.
06:57You'll find expert advice, introductions to the latest plant varieties and clever gardening tips and tricks to help your garden thrive with ease.
07:06And we love showcasing the newest innovations that will give you the most beautiful garden on the block.
07:16Good gardeners love their soil.
07:18It's literally the foundation of every garden, anchoring plants in place and providing them with nutrients and moisture.
07:25Healthy soil is teeming with microbial life, with billions of microscopic bacteria and fungi helping our plants to grow and prosper.
07:34So it's absolutely imperative that us gardeners look after our soil.
07:39One of the very best things any gardener can do to show their soil just how important it is, is to mulch.
07:46Mulch provides a protective blanket to the soil, helping to mitigate the effects of the scorching Aussie sun.
07:52Keep the soil cooler, slow evaporation and protect the soil microbes.
07:57Mulch can also be effective in smothering out weeds and weed seeds.
08:02Before mulching, it is a good idea to apply a wetting agent and fertiliser if required.
08:07A good mulch will allow water, either from rainfall or irrigation, to move through it really quickly into the soil below where it's actually needed.
08:18To do this, the mulch needs to be comprised of irregular particle sizes and be quite coarse.
08:24Apply the mulch as a layer 50 to 100 millimetres thick, thinning out as you get closer to any plant trunks or stems.
08:33Building the mulch up thickly around the trunks of your plants could lead to collar rot, which in turn can result in dead plants, which is not ideal.
08:41For veggie beds and productive gardens are feeding mulchers recommended.
08:46Pea straw or triple C is ideal.
08:48Again, lay quite thickly between the plants and thin out close to the stems.
08:53Once the crops have been harvested and the plants are finished for the season, feeding mulchers can be dug into the soil, providing nutrients and fertiliser for the next season's crop.
09:04Don't forget about your potted plants.
09:08Plants in larger pots should also be mulched, for the exact reasons you would mulch your garden beds.
09:14Add a fertiliser and a wetting agent, then apply the mulch.
09:17Keeping it off the trunk in potted plants can be a little more tricky, but it's still important.
09:23The main reason for mulching is definitely to have happier and healthier plants, but it doesn't hurt that a freshly mulched garden looks fantastic too.
09:33Mulching will protect your soil, slowing evaporation and moderating soil temperatures.
09:38Mulching will make gardening easier and you'll also have soil that loves you.
09:48One of the most disappointing problems raised by gardeners is what I call sudden death syndrome.
09:55Plants that are apparently healthy just drop dead overnight, or it could be a patch of lawn, pot plant, even shrubs in the garden.
10:04And yet they're normally quite well watered.
10:07The underlying cause can be a build-up of a waxy substance which coats the soil particles in water-repellent wax.
10:16Water often sits on the surface, unable to penetrate down to where the roots are located.
10:22When pot plants are affected by this water-repellent problem, the water that you apply tends to bead up and then run down the side, the edge of the pot.
10:33It still comes out the drainage hole.
10:35However, it hasn't penetrated the root ball, that sort of central area of roots, and the plants get dry and can die.
10:43The most effective fix is to apply a wetting agent at the first sign of unexpected wilting.
10:52This formulation not only goes to work fast to open up the moisture lock, but also brings sea salt, seaweed extract and liquid humic soil conditioners to the party.
11:04Applying is as simple as using a hose end sprayer or a watering can, and you can use it on any of your garden plants or your potted plants for that matter.
11:17Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just beginning, our website provides everything you need to enjoy the beauty in your own garden.
11:29From expert advice, the latest plant releases and inspiring DIY projects, we also highlight the newest gardening tools and innovations designed to create a thriving garden effortlessly.
11:40Visit thegardengurus.tv today and make gardening easier and, of course, more enjoyable.
11:47The same thing happens every year just as we move into the serious entertaining period, usually just before Christmas, we get a dry spell,
11:55and the lawn that was looking pretty darn good suddenly looks stressed and in trouble.
12:00And this is a sure sign to increase your watering minutes to ensure you're maintaining the growth.
12:06But how do you fix it? I mean, what would you do if you had the family around at Christmas and it was looking all dry and crispy?
12:14Even worse, you had the mates over for your Boxing Day Backyard Test and you couldn't play the game because you had patches everywhere.
12:21You want this lawn looking outstanding, and thanks to this new technology from Scots, you can do it.
12:26This lawn builder will not just green your lawn, it'll actually do it in the same day.
12:32Long-term recovery from damage is always best treated with a great lawn fertiliser like Lawn Builder.
12:38It's what the experts rely on.
12:40But Lawn Builder isn't just the perfect slow-release lawn food.
12:44It's also a specialised range of treatments, including this bottle of Genius,
12:49the ultimate cheat for those of us wanting to impress.
12:53Now the way this works, well, it's really quite remarkable.
12:59They've applied years and years of scientific research.
13:01They identified two key elements, nitrogen and iron.
13:05And these are the greening elements in the leaves that we see.
13:08But these are not any old forms. These are highly soluble forms.
13:11So when you apply over the foliage, it's absorbed through the foliage.
13:14It doesn't have to come up through the roots.
13:16Now this means that you are going to get almost instant green,
13:20which means that you can cheat your backyard Boxing Day test.
13:23Oh, an application. It's foolproof.
13:28No mixing, no mess, an instant effect.
13:31And if you're wondering what lawn varieties this best suits,
13:34try broadleaf grasses like buffalo or fineleaf like coochers.
13:38Even the cooler season grasses, which respond instantly.
13:43Now look, you'll find this fast green in every Bunnings store in the country.
13:47So there's a bottle near you, which means you do not have an excuse.
13:51You've really got to make sure you've got one a couple of days before you entertain,
13:55apply it and dazzle your friends.
13:57They'll be blown away with just how quick this stuff actually acts.
14:01It's absolutely brilliant.
14:02And whilst you're down at your local Bunnings store,
14:04grab a sausage sizzle and help the local cricket club.
14:08We created this show so that you could have a beautiful garden at home
14:17without becoming a slave to it.
14:20Now, whether you're a beginner or an expert,
14:22our Facebook page is the perfect resource to help you
14:25have the most beautiful garden in the street.
14:28You'll find expert advice, introductions to the latest plant varieties
14:33and clever gardening tips and tricks to help your garden thrive with ease.
14:37And we love showcasing the newest innovations that will give you the most beautiful garden on the block.
14:43So come join us and be part of our community.
14:46Citrus are the most popular fruiting plant to grow in the home garden by quite some margin.
14:53And it's not really surprising.
14:55They're easy to grow.
14:56They look great and they produce the most delicious fruit.
14:59Now, most citrus crop in winter, but it's the work the home gardener does during the warmer months
15:05that will decide just how bountiful that crop of fruit is.
15:08Once the flowers and tiny fruit begin to form, it's critical to maintain a constant moisture level in the soil.
15:16Too much variation can cause plant stress and the fruit and flowers may simply fall off.
15:21Using a good quality wetting agent will allow the water to soak in and hold in the soil,
15:27while applying a layer of mulch will slow soil moisture loss.
15:33Your citrus trees will require adequate nutrition to form and carry fruit through to ripening.
15:38A controlled release fertilizer will provide this nutrition in a gradual manner,
15:43and it can be supplemented with liquid fertilizing.
15:46Avoid heavy fertilizing, as this may push the tree into growth mode at the expense of fruiting.
15:53For gardeners with restricted space, growing citrus in pots is an excellent option.
15:58Many varieties are sold as dwarf forms or are naturally more compact growing.
16:03This native lime is a perfect example.
16:05It's ready to be repotted to ensure it stays healthy through summer.
16:09I'm using a premium potting mix and a controlled release fertilizer.
16:13Watering them well with a wetting agent, seaweed solution finishes the job.
16:19You can have too much of a good thing,
16:21and last winter this Meyer lemon tree produced so much fruit,
16:24I simply couldn't use it or even give it away.
16:27So this year I'm going to prune it to keep the tree a little smaller
16:31and hopefully get a smaller, more manageable crop.
16:34I'm selectively pruning out branches to lower the height of the tree and open up the canopy.
16:40When selecting citrus trees for your home garden,
16:43don't be afraid to try something a little different.
16:45This Canotto citrus tree is a really compact grower and highly ornamental.
16:50It produces fruits that can be made into jams, marmalades, even liqueurs.
16:55But what it's best known for is a Canotto Italian soft drink.
17:03Citrus are an excellent addition to a suburban garden,
17:05and although they shine brightest in the winter months as their fruit ripens,
17:09it's important to put in the work over summer to keep your trees happy, healthy and most importantly fruitful.
17:19Now this has got to be one of the best times of the year in the garden.
17:23When we're coming out of spring going into summer,
17:25we've seen this massive explosion of growth and of course we want to see that sustained as we go into the summer months.
17:31Now the warm weather is a very good thing as long as we can maintain water supply.
17:36The other thing that's absolutely critical is making sure that the plants have the same energy that they've had as they've come into spring.
17:43Now that means that you've got to supplement the soil with minerals,
17:46most importantly those microbes that really do boost the growth,
17:50that make the significant difference.
17:52If you get those right and you've got bright sunny days and the plants can photosynthesise,
17:56make energy, you're going to end up with the best possible garden.
18:01Roses are a good example of what I'm referring to.
18:04They produce significant growth coming out of winter and then they put on spectacular displays.
18:09This combined draw of energy and nutrients will run out if not sustained
18:14and minerals once used are not replenished miraculously in the soil,
18:18they actually have to be replaced.
18:20That's why feeding your flowering plants now towards the end of their first significant flush of flowers
18:26and growth is really important.
18:28The trick is to use a fertiliser that is complex in its nature,
18:32having a range of critical mineral elements necessary for strong healthy growth
18:37and of course flower production.
18:39Now the thing with biominerals is that they do make a massive difference
18:43and I'm not telling you this because I want to see you going spending your well learnt money.
18:49What I'm wanting you to do is to make sure that you're never disappointed.
18:52If you don't supplement the soil with the nutrients and especially those minerals that plants need,
18:58what you'll find is the next flush of flowers will be smaller.
19:01The plant will be less vigorous.
19:03And with time, the big problem with that of course is they become susceptible to pests and diseases.
19:08So keeping biominerals close by is going to make a big difference to the health of your soil
19:14and the health of your plants.
19:16This is the new generation of fertiliser that's changing everything.
19:20The second is soil moisture.
19:22Where there is moisture there is life.
19:24Without it microbes will not exist and plants will not grow.
19:28It's also very much about consistency.
19:31So two deep drinks a week for gardens and lawns should sustain most garden plants in hot dry climates.
19:38Pots and hanging baskets will need hand watering daily.
19:42Now a little bit of a tip when it comes to watering as well.
19:45Make sure you're watering the ground, the roots around the base of the plant, not over the foliage.
19:51The foliage is really not going to do an awful lot and a lot of that water will evaporate
19:55so it's kind of wasted.
19:57But if you get it in around the roots, you're going to have plants that are going to be a lot happier.
20:01This applies to pots even more so.
20:03In fact, one of the interesting things with pots is if you put a tray under it,
20:07any excess water that flows through the pot will sit in the tray
20:10and then be taken back up to the roots through capillary action.
20:13Watering is vitally important this time of the year,
20:16whether it be pot plants, whether it be garden plants,
20:18and definitely when you've applied a mineral fertiliser like this,
20:22you want to make sure that the bio part of it, those microbes,
20:26are all activated and growing strongly.
20:30Well that's all we've got for you this week on The Garden Gurus.
20:33The good news is we're back next week.
