00:00Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, feeling that strange sense of disorientation?
00:04That moment where you re-not quite sure if you re-still dreaming, or if your eyes are actually open?
00:09That's where our story begins.
00:11It was a Tuesday, or maybe a Wednesday.
00:13The days had started to blur together.
00:15A monotonous cycle of work, eat, sleep, repeat.
00:18I live alone in a small apartment on the third floor of an old building.
00:21It's nothing fancy, just a bedroom, a living room that doubles as my office, a tiny kitchen, and a bathroom.
00:27The walls are thin, the floors creak, and the radiator hisses like a snake in the winter.
00:32But it's mine.
00:33It's my sanctuary.
00:34That night, I went to bed around 11, exhausted from a long day staring at spreadsheets.
00:39The city outside was unusually quiet, muffled by a thick blanket of fog that had rolled in from the river.
00:44I remember pulling the covers up to my chin, the familiar way to comfort, and drifting off almost instantly.
00:49The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the cold, bone-deep chill had settled in the room, the kind that makes your teeth ache.
00:55My digital clock glowed a menacing red, 3.07 a.m., the witching hour.
01:00I shivered, pulling the blanket tighter, but the cold wasn't just in the air.
01:03It was a feeling, a presence.
01:05My heart began to thud against my ribs, a slow, heavy drumbeat.
01:09I lay perfectly still, straining my ears.
01:11The usual city sounds were absent, no distant sirens, no rumbling of late-night traffic, just a profound, suffocating silence.
01:18And then I heard it.
01:19It was faint at first, so faint I thought I was imagining it, a soft, rhythmic sound.
01:24Inhale, exhale.
01:25It was deep and ragged, like someone struggling to catch their breath after a long run.
01:29And it was close, so close.
01:31My blood turned to ice.
01:33I live alone.
01:34I've lived alone for 5 years.
01:35There was no one else supposed to be in this apartment.
01:37There was no one else supposed to be in this asterisk bed asterisk.
01:40Inhale, exhale.
01:41The sound was coming from right beside me, from the empty space on the pillow next to mine.
01:45Every logical part of my brain screamed at me.
01:47It's the radiator.
01:48It's the pipes.
01:49It's the wind.
01:49But this wasn't a mechanical sound.
01:51This was organic.
01:52This was alive.
01:53My eyes were wide open now, staring into the impenetrable darkness of my bedroom.
01:57I couldn't see anything, not the outline of my dresser, not the faint rectangle of the
02:02window.
02:02It was like a thick black velvet had been draped over the world.
02:06Fear is a funny thing.
02:07It paralyzes you.
02:08I wanted to scream, to leap out of bed, to turn on the light.
02:11But I couldn't move.
02:12My limbs felt like lead, pinned to the mattress by an invisible weight.
02:15All I could do was lie there, my own breathing caught in my throat, listening to that other
02:20alien breath fill the silence.
02:22Inhale, exhale.
02:23It sounded heavier now, closer.
02:25I could almost feel the vibration of it through the mattress, a subtle tremor with each raspy
02:29breath.
02:29My mind raced, trying to find an explanation.
02:32A burglar.
02:33But the front door has three locks.
02:34I checked them before I went to bed.
02:36I always do.
02:37A friend with a key.
02:38No one has a key.
02:39A cold draft slithered across my cheek, smelling of damp earth and something else, something
02:44faintly metallic like old pennies.
02:46My stomach churned.
02:47The breathing hitched, followed by a low, guttural sigh.
02:50It sounded content.
02:51I had to do something.
02:52I couldn't just lie here and wait for whatever was next.
02:55Slowly, millimeter by agonizing millimeter, I started to move my hand, sliding it across
02:59the sheet toward the edge of the bed.
03:01My bedside lamp was just inches away.
03:04If I could just reach the switch, the breathing stopped.
03:06The sudden silence was more terrifying than the sound itself.
03:10The air in the room grew thick and heavy, charged with anticipation.
03:13I held my breath, my hand frozen in mid-air.
03:16Did it hear me?
03:17Did it know I was awake?
03:19A floorboard creaked in the corner of the room near the closet.
03:22My heart leaped into my throat.
03:23It wasn't in the bed anymore.
03:25It was moving.
03:25I squeezed my eyes shut, a pathetic, childish attempt to make it all disappear.
03:30If I can't see it, it can't see me.
03:31But I could feel it.
03:33I could feel its attention shift.
03:34A cold, predatory focus directed right at me.
03:37Another creak, this time closer to the foot of the bed, it was circling.
03:41My mind flashed with horrible images, faceless shapes looming in the dark.
03:45I thought about the news reports, the stories you hear about home invasions, the ones you
03:49always think will never happen to you.
03:51The weight on the mattress shifted again, this time at the very edge, by my feet.
03:55A deep depression formed in the comforter, as if something incredibly heavy had just sat
03:59down.
03:59I felt a pressure against my leg, cold and solid, through the layers of blankets.
04:04I let out a tiny, involuntary whimper.
04:06The breathing started again, but it was different now.
04:09It was a low, wet chuckle that seemed to come from everywhere at once.
04:12It wasn't human.
04:13No human could make a sound like that.
04:15It was the sound of ancient hunger, of a nightmare-given form.
04:19And then, a voice whispered directly into my ear.
04:21A voice that was like grinding stones and dried leaves.
04:24It said just one thing.
04:26I know you're awake.
04:27That was it.
04:28The paralysis broke.
04:29A primal scream tore from my lungs as I threw myself out of the bed, scrambling on all fours
04:34toward the door.
04:35I didn't look back.
04:36I couldn't.
04:37I slammed into the hallway wall, fumbled for the light switch, and flooded the small space
04:41with blinding, beautiful light.
04:43I spun around.
04:44My back pressed against the wall, heart-hammering, ready to face the monster from my bed.
04:49But there was nothing there.
04:50The bedroom was empty.
04:51The bed was undisturbed.
04:53The pillow next to mine perfectly smoothed.
04:55The window was locked.
04:56The closet door shut.
04:57It was just my room, exactly as I had left it.
05:00Was it a dream?
05:01A night terror?
05:02My mind, desperate for a rational explanation, latched onto the idea.
05:06It had to be.
05:07Just a vivid, terrifying nightmare brought on by stress and exhaustion.
05:11I stood there for a long time, shaking, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
05:15I checked every lock, looked in every closet, under the bed, nothing.
05:18The apartment was secure.
05:19I was alone.
05:20Eventually, the adrenaline faded, leaving me hollowed out and exhausted.
05:23I couldn't bring myself to get back in that bed.
05:26I spent the rest of the night on the couch, with every light in the apartment blazing,
05:30jumping at every creak and groan of the old building.
05:32I've tried to forget about it.
05:34I've tried to convince myself it was all in my head.
05:36But some nights when the city is quiet and the hour is late, I still feel a chill in the air.
05:41And sometimes, just as I'm about to fall asleep, I think I can hear it, a faint, distant sound on the edge of hearing, inhale, exhale.
05:47And I remember that voice, and I know, deep in my soul, that I am not really alone.
05:52It's just waiting.
05:53Waiting for me to fall asleep again.
05:55Thank you so much for listening to my story.
