00:00Previously, on The Last Woodsman...
00:21Heads up!
00:25After a two-week scramble to fund access to the forever claim...
00:29We have to get every load we can get.
00:32Jared surpasses his $200,000 goal.
00:37We've worked really hard to make this deal.
00:38Everything is lining up perfectly.
00:42But the celebration is short-lived.
00:45You gotta be kidding me.
00:47Somebody beat me.
00:49Who?
00:50Looks like John Muhammad.
00:54I don't want to see people lose their jobs.
00:56I can't.
00:57If this doesn't happen, I'm f***ed.
00:59I'm
01:29I
01:31Will trip it and it'll go in the water and then we'll deal with this. I'll put the grapple up though. Yeah
01:37Not getting forever claim is devastating
01:47We are five weeks away from ending the operation in flow cam I got nowhere to go
01:55This could be catastrophic for my business
01:59This was the hill to die on for me my company. This was the end-all be-all. I'm gonna have to
02:09Come up with some kind of deal that John can't refuse
02:12I'm gonna have to go see him in his office and try to make something out of this. That's gonna save my company right now
02:19I'm feeling a little rough this morning
02:31Some crazy time
02:33Oh my god
02:49To the top
02:51John Muhammad is a very big juggernaut
02:54Everything from his own logging companies down to a huge log trading business that he owns
03:00Hey John, how you doing? Good Jared. Good to see you. How are you? Good. It's good. Yeah. How's things? Oh, you know hanging in there?
03:08Times are tough, right?
03:09I don't have to tell you that
03:11Yeah, you got the the bid on the forever claim. Yeah. Yeah, I'm happy. I got that. I
03:17Was surprised you bid it actually. I know I really needed that for future expansion for my business
03:23Wondering if we can somehow work out a deal or work together on it or
03:30Well, I know I had plans for it Jared like we got to make sure we get that wood delivered on time for the customers
03:36We've committed it to you had anybody lined up to do that work
03:40Yeah, we're I mean we were looking at several options
03:43Well, you know, I've got the equipment and I've got all the people to do it
03:47So I confronted all the start-up costs everything like that and
03:57I need to make this happen. So we can you work with me?
04:02Well, I respect that you're a businessman and you want to grow your business. I've been there
04:07I'm surprised you came here, but you know, I need cash back on this
04:11For this season. How soon could you start there? I could pretty much start immediately
04:17I
04:20Could do something maybe
04:23Per barge
04:28120,000 in royalty per barge
04:32Okay, that's big number I
04:38Was thinking like 80
04:41Yeah, it's not gonna work Jared
04:44Can we meet in the middle hundred?
04:47If I agree to a hundred and you defaults I need some backup
04:53If you've defaulted on any payment of the royalties no questions asked I repossessed the float camp
04:58Well
05:00Yeah, yeah, you got one shot at this I know the minute I leave this office. I'll be going to out there to get started
05:15But I will ask
05:17Would you consider selling the forever claim to me at the end of the season?
05:20I mean you're getting ahead of yourself
05:22Let's focus on the production in the season first
05:25Um
05:27I won't say no
05:29I won't say no
05:33But uh, I mean I bid it hard to get it for our business
05:37But I can't lose money on it Jared
05:39I can't lose money on it Jared
05:40So uh, my number's gonna be
05:42You know, aggressive
05:44If I were to agree to sell it to you the number's gonna be two million dollars
05:48Two million, okay, that's uh
05:50That's good wood
05:52Okay, okay, I think we can make that work
05:54A hundred thousand dollars per barge
05:56Yeah
05:58Two million dollars at the end of the season
06:00And float camp as collateral
06:02That's collateral
06:04Okay, well, I think we got a deal
06:06Well, that was intense
06:08This deal might not be the best deal
06:10But this deal is the only deal I have right now
06:12So, I think we got a deal
06:13$200,000 per barge
06:14Yeah
06:15$200,000 per barge
06:17$200,000 at the end of the season
06:19And float camp as collateral
06:20As collateral
06:21Okay, well, I think we got a deal
06:23Well, that was intense
06:26Well, that was intense
06:29This deal might not be the best deal
06:32But this deal is the only deal I have right now
06:35If I don't raise this two million
06:38At the end of the season
06:39I pretty much worked a whole season for nothing
06:42And if I do not give John the royalties
06:46I lose the deal
06:47Not to mention my float camp
06:48So, I'm in a major rock and a hard spot
06:52I only have about a month to get Forever Claims started
06:56To get this operation done quick
06:58I am going to have to get every piece of available equipment
07:01That I can find
07:03I have float camp the main operation
07:06But I have to split the crew in half
07:08This is going to be the biggest test
07:11That I've ever put myself through
07:13And this is going to be
07:15For the ages
07:16One of the biggest logging moves
07:19Ever been done
07:21The wind's blowing
07:37The tide's ripping
07:38And we got a huge barge to load
07:40On the outskirts of float camp
07:43Jared's race to ramp up the Forever Claim
07:45Is at full sprint
07:47Priority number one
07:49Barging every machine they can spare
07:51From their current operation
07:5380 miles up the coast
07:55Well, you think we got enough gear?
08:01It's a big game of Tetris
08:05Trying to figure out where everybody's going to fit
08:07I have a lot of iron
08:17Moving it is the challenge
08:22We have to get our equipment farther than it's ever been
08:25Across rougher water than it's ever been
08:28Very tippy these ones
08:33It's good
08:35Logistics for the Forever Claim are a nightmare
08:40Crazy expensive
08:42After startup costs
08:46Jared has 600 grand
08:48To put toward the Forever Claim buyout
08:50But to reach 2 million
08:52By the end of the season
08:54And hit John Muhammad's royalties in the meantime
08:57He'll need every logging machine he can get
09:06This is a ground yarder
09:09Second biggest machine on this barge
09:11Definitely worried about the ramp
09:13The weight on the ramp
09:15But
09:17We can't hold back down
09:18It's time to go
09:19What's that?
09:20I can put that crate truck
09:25Do you want to walk this thing up that ramp?
09:29Driving me insane
09:31Loading barges is always a stressful time
09:36Especially for any owner
09:38Because it's very expensive
09:40Everybody's had that grandpa that was doing a project
09:44And he starts losing it on everybody
09:46That's what I feel like when I'm loading barges
09:49Stay out of my way
09:50Listen to me
09:51And go give her hell to get this done
09:54Damn the torpedoes!
09:57But the last machine aboard is the biggest by far
10:01The 150 foot tall super snorkel
10:05Driven by veteran operator Glenn Baird
10:11Running the snorkel
10:13It's a delicate operation
10:15You have to be aware
10:17You're talking about a couple hundred ton of machine
10:22And it has three inches of clearance
10:25One mistake in that thing
10:28Over it goes
10:30Fingers crossed
10:49Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
10:51Before Glenn got to the barge ramp
11:04I noticed right away that his track was skipping
11:07If those chains broke and that spud lock came off
11:10The machine would just be doing circles
11:13Wiping out every single piece of equipment around it
11:16And maybe toppling off the barge
11:19So we got to make sure this track doesn't come off
11:26What have we got here today?
11:32She's moving already
11:33Might not have a bunch of time
11:4680 miles north of float camp
11:50At the forever claim
11:57The hunt for money trees is already underway
12:03Get going old man
12:07With fallers Chris Hersigs and Brendan Bowman on the front line
12:10What have we got here today?
12:15It's a nice tree
12:17Looks like a tarantula
12:20All these arms and legs off of it
12:26With this tarantula tree, Brendan's deemed it
12:29Starting to die from the top down
12:31So might as well harvest this
12:33While it's still a good, valuable piece of wood
12:36Just have to worry about these marms
12:38Especially that one on the backside
12:40Yeah, the one popping off there
12:41Yeah
12:43It ain't going to fall off if you cut it
12:45Well if anything
12:46You ought to just pop back out
12:47I would think
12:49Flick out and take out your chicklets
12:51Due to the many marms
12:53Or branches jutting from its trunk
12:56The 130 foot cedar
12:57Has an extremely low centre of gravity
13:00Which makes controlling the direction of its fall
13:03Far more difficult
13:08To compensate, Brendan will make an oversized face cut
13:14Which should point the tree toward a soft landing
13:17But doing so will add tension to the marm growing up the backside
13:21And if it's too much
13:23It could snap back on Brendan
13:26With deadly force
13:29I got faith
13:30All right, here we go
13:36How's that look?
13:51So far, so good
13:53I'm assuming when I cut this thing
13:55It's probably going to
13:57It's probably going to take right off
13:59So I'm going to try and work around the front here
14:01And get as much of this cut up
14:02Before I cut this back leg off
14:11My dad was always out in the bush
14:13So I was out there cutting fire with him quite a bit
14:15I don't know, maybe 13?
14:17And just on the farm cutting stuff up
14:18And started hand following in 1989
14:21I love it
14:23I've always loved it
14:25Kind of master your own destiny
14:27You do it right or you do it wrong
14:30You made the decision
14:38She's moving already
14:40Yeah, I think I'll be going up in there
14:42I think this is just going to tear right out
14:44You might not have a bunch of time
14:45All right, here we go
15:16Ta-da!
15:20Nice shooting!
15:22Yeah, that's a dandy that one
15:24Yeah, that's some nice wood in that thing
15:26It went exactly as planned
15:28I managed to get it right where I wanted to
15:30Saved right out to the top
15:32Very little breakage
15:34It's perfect
15:36Yeah, if you add all those marms in
15:38Probably almost highway truck load right there
15:41Boss is going to make some good money off of this one
15:42There's so much usable fiber in it
15:45Go see if there's any more good paying logs out here
15:52Further up the mountain
15:59The race to build roads that will move logs to the water
16:03Is already underway
16:05With crewmen Will Stratton and Ian Kennedy leading the charge
16:09We're the front line
16:11We're the first heavy equipment crew that comes in
16:14We got to get in there and build the road as quick as possible for the loggers
16:19So far, Will and Ian are 8 miles into what will be a 12 mile route
16:25Carved through solid rock
16:28There's a lot of planning that goes into blowing up these rocks
16:32You want to break it enough that you can use it or move it or whatever you need to do with it
16:38But you also need to make sure that it's not going to just launch it
16:42Become a crater or a bigger problem
16:44I've been doing it for a few years now
16:47I've had tons and tons of shots
16:49My favourite part of road building is basically all of it
16:52Because you get to play with heavy equipment, big machines
16:54I always loved that as a kid
16:55And you get to do rock climbing and blowing stuff up never gets old
17:00So that explosion at the end of your hard work just pays off every time
17:07You leave your radio on?
17:09Oh f***
17:13F*** me
17:15You put the detonator inside of the primer
17:18In this case we're going to put the primer right down to the bottom of the hole
17:23Carefully
17:25Then we'll take our bag of Anfo
17:27Put a little bit of Anfo in there
17:32Once you're done loading the hole you just grab whatever material
17:36And what that does is it seals off the explosive
17:40So all of the power stays inside of the hole
17:45Instead of just rifling a bunch of it out
17:46Make a big boom
17:48Make a big boom
17:52Blasting sand 100, one shot, five minutes
17:59Okay, back in the truck
18:04Sure that fuse is going?
18:06Yeah, I can see the smoke coming, it's still going
18:17Probably feel the concussion from here
18:21Wow, you really annihilated that one, didn't you?
18:26Yeah, there's a little bit of power behind it
18:28There's some rocks to play with
18:30Yeah
18:32Jared will be happy if we can get this road done sooner than later
18:3380 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp
18:3480 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp
18:3580 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp
18:3780 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp
18:3980 miles away, on the outskirts of float camp
18:41That track's doing its floppy thing
18:45to play with yeah jared would be happy if we can get this road done sooner than later
18:5780 miles away on the outskirts of float camp
19:07that track's doing its floppy thing jared's all-out race to load a fleet of machines bound for the
19:14forever claim has stopped dead in its tracks i'll have to get scotty to get it way better jared
19:22the uh tracks just about to fall off that would have been catastrophic walking up here pinching
19:27off the main route for all of our equipment so we decided to get a mechanic here to fix the track
19:34problem so we're going to have to use that black tank full of nitrogen so we can tighten the track
19:42and safely get onto the bar chair otherwise it could be disastrous thank god we got scotty here
19:49to fix this got her i think so
20:02so he's gonna have to back on the barge definitely a nerve-wracking feeling
20:30that should hold her
20:46that's a lot of iron jared i'm amazed that we got it on and now he's gonna go through open water
20:54and rough as seas oh this barge should take a date to get to the forever claim
21:01i'm hoping everything stays on the barge and let's just hope not a bumpy ocean
21:07high above the forever clay look at the cedar trees there so much potential for logging up here
21:29jared arrives ahead of his fleet of logging machines
21:31with the crew spread thin there's a reported water issue with his secondary camp that could
21:37cripple the whole operation this whole job's starting to snowball to a whole bunch of problems
21:43started with the barge problem now we have a whole bunch of problems so definitely one of those days
21:48this camp consumes a lot of water everybody needs to shower we gotta wash dishes gotta do laundry
22:02you run out of water there's barely anything coming in i gotta go on the boat go up the creek
22:10we are in the most remote area i've ever been to that's riddled with grizzly bears i absolutely
22:19hate grizzly bears and i'm terrified of those things the water line is like a snickers bar for
22:26bears they love to chew the water lines for whatever reason i'm a little worried that we're going to
22:31encounter some wildlife on this uh little mission but i need to get that water going
22:40what we do here is we hike this big steel intake up there and we run water line all the way down to
22:55the barge camp uh seems to be bears chewing on it i got to take it apart here check it make sure we got
23:06some pressure down there i'm a little nervous to have my head down here grizzly bear territory so
23:13hopefully i can make this uh fix and make make it happen quick
23:27there we go cleared some out of there
23:29cut myself probably gonna need some stitches definitely one of those days
23:51further inland
23:53gotta put her in four low to climb up this slimy
23:59the logging machines arrive later today so fallers chris and brendan accelerate the hunt for
24:05more money trees to haul
24:09interesting yeah kind of looks like a crazy old cactus
24:14big old desert cactus on the west coast
24:18good lean to it
24:23any bears no bears
24:24nice straight piece of wood for the most part it doesn't have those big hooks or nothing yeah
24:31quick pile of wood actually yeah fallen trees personally it gives me a lot of pride
24:38that i can go out there and do one of the world's most dangerous jobs because nobody in there ain't wine
24:44we're not gonna do what we do out here i would think we all got that weird little screw that's just
24:50been loosened off a little too far i absolutely love the exhilaration the rush i get out of
24:58the challenges that i come across and i need that in life
25:05uh-oh danger tree out in the back there
25:08i have to take a look at that figure out if it's a problem for this thing
25:13a danger tree is just a dead standing tree a safety hazard and uh working below something like
25:21that it's just not a smart thing to be doing because they could uh be compromised at any time
25:27got a big big crack in here fairly rotten it could run off of itself and and be a hazard
25:35got a nice opening over there to slash her into just easier on a guy's mind if it's gone
25:40this dead tree is too far gone to have any value
25:48but if chris were to leave it standing by the cactus cedar any ground disturbance from the fall
25:53could send it crashing down on him from behind so to hedge his bets he'll take it down solo before
26:00turning to the main target it's not gonna hit the ground talking about it
26:10so
26:18Right on, right on.
26:48That thing was kind of gross.
26:49It's laid out there like a carpet now,
26:53so it makes my brain feel a lot safer now.
26:57Yeah, it'll be a much better work environment.
27:04Further up the mountain, after having
27:08made steady progress on their 12-mile logging road,
27:13Shut it off.
27:15Builders Will and Ian have hit a major barrier
27:18on the home stretch.
27:20It's not an everyday occurrence you come across this.
27:24It's a giant mess.
27:26It would be nice just to put the road down here,
27:28but there's that creek and that bridge.
27:30We've got to build right up there.
27:32So we kind of have to be in.
27:34We're going to have to be very careful
27:36with how we do this one.
27:43It's going to be an interesting one to drill.
27:45Can't see anything when I'm drilling,
27:47so Ian's going to have to guide me in
27:49and just make sure I'm lined up level
27:51and set my depth and everything.
27:53So, it's going to be a challenge.
28:05Hey!
28:06.
28:07See where you want it?
28:09Yeah.
28:10Guys like Ian and I, we're always under pressure
28:24to build road and get things done as quickly as possible.
28:28It definitely makes my job quite a lot easier working
28:31with someone that's really experienced.
28:49Well, time to load her up.
28:51Okay, let's get going.
28:55These are the big primers.
28:57They're two by 16.
28:58They're twice as big as the other ones.
29:00It'll give it a little extra kick for this big boulder
29:03because we don't want to come back to it.
29:05Send them to the moon.
29:06We won't have to deal with them.
29:08Yeah.
29:12Okay, I think that should be good.
29:15If you're happy, I'm happy.
29:21Blasting sand 100, one shot, five minutes.
29:28Always make sure the truck's running before you.
29:30Light the fuse.
29:32There it goes.
29:38You ready?
29:38Yeah.
29:38Yeah.
30:00Oh, that was a pretty good bang.
30:19Yeah.
30:21In the hills of the forever claim,
30:24Will and Ian are in the final stage
30:26of completing 12 miles of new logging road,
30:30so long as their latest blast has managed
30:32to clear their biggest blockage of all.
30:36Oh, this looks good.
30:39It's all fractured up.
30:40We should be able to get it all down, cleaned up,
30:42make it look like it was never there.
30:47This shot went exactly how I wanted it to go.
30:49Everything's fractured up.
30:51There's no serious hazards on top.
30:54The bro blocks out of our way, and just
30:56got to clear debris out from the last boulder
30:59and get the road done.
31:01Let's get at her.
31:10Back down by the water.
31:15It's D-Day today.
31:16After a 24-hour voyage, Jared's logging machinery
31:20has finally arrived at the forever claim.
31:24A lot of equipment on that barge.
31:25So how the snorkel gets off here
31:27is going to be very interesting.
31:29I'm a little concerned.
31:31Hopefully your tracks not loose again, Glenn,
31:34because you've got to come up here and make a hard turn.
31:35That's when you'd lose the track.
31:38A track off anywhere is bad, but right here
31:40would be horrible.
31:42The worst.
31:44A barge load of equipment sitting behind it
31:47at $500 an hour.
31:49Yes.
31:49Yeah.
31:55See your operating skills.
31:57Ha!
32:10You want me to launch ya?
32:11You want me to launch ya?
32:13Just pray.
32:13Come on, baby.
32:14Come on.
32:14Come on.
32:15Come on.
32:15Come on.
32:16Come on.
32:16Come on.
32:17Come on.
32:17Come on.
32:18Come on.
32:18Come on.
32:19Come on.
32:19Come on.
32:20Come on.
32:20Come on.
32:21Come on.
32:41That went pretty good.
32:43Yeah.
32:44Go up there and head to the left.
32:45Right on.
32:46Thanks, Glenn.
32:47Here we go.
32:50But the most difficult machines have no tracks.
33:00A pair of boom boats that are essential for moving logs
33:03in the water, but notoriously unstable on land.
33:08Boatways all on.
33:11It's definitely maxing out everything this machine has.
33:16Just get that eerie feeling.
33:28Like that.
33:29That's not a good feeling.
33:31That's not a good feeling.
33:41Easy.
33:44Careful now, lads.
33:46Watch it don't fall on ya.
33:48Yeah.
33:57Further up the road.
34:01With a deadly danger tree now out of their way.
34:03Get into the big one here.
34:05Fallers Chris and Brendan are ready to bring down a red cedar
34:08worth upwards of $20,000.
34:11It's lean more or less straight, but if I put it straight,
34:15it's gonna catapult off that windfall there and definitely
34:19end up on the road.
34:20So probably wanna point it a little higher than normal.
34:23Just more or less worrying about this soft, mushy-ass ground.
34:30Almost like you're standing in a swamp.
34:33Roots can pull very easily in this kind of ground.
34:36They've got the landslide and all the debris behind us
34:38that shows it's been unstable before.
34:40So something to keep in mind.
34:42Yeah, you bet.
34:50With an entire fleet of logging machinery already heading
34:53uphill for work, the last thing they need is a shattered tree
34:57blocking their path.
34:59So to counter its downhill end, Chris will aim his face cut
35:04higher up the bank for a softer landing and hope the whole
35:07thing doesn't uproot from the waterlogged soil first.
35:11Time's a tick in here, so I better get this thing on the ground.
35:15Right now I'm just putting a little cut in here.
35:19Just splitting this undercut so I could try and get it out.
35:20Make sure I have it put in here.
35:21I'm just putting a little cut in here.
35:22Just splitting this undercut so I could try and get it out.
35:23Make sure I have it lined up properly.
35:24A nice clean undercut here.
35:25A nice clean undercut here.
35:26A nice clean undercut here.
35:27A nice clean undercut here.
35:28A nice clean undercut.
35:29A nice clean undercut here.
35:35It's pinching me on this side because it wants to go that way.
35:40That's where all the weight of the tree is.
35:41It's going to want to go quick.
35:42It's going to want to go quick.
35:43It's going to want to go quick.
35:45All the additional cut away.
35:46That's the magic.
35:47Farmers are achieving that crop.
35:48It's going to run the trees out.
35:49It's going to run the trees out.
35:50The tree is going to run into this thing.
35:51The tree is going to run into this tree.
35:52It's going to run the trees out.
35:53And then that's where you've got them, it's going to run a tree.
35:54It's pinching me on this side because it wants to go that way.
36:04That's where all the weight of the tree is.
36:06It's going to want to go quick.
36:24Holy .
36:45You really have to be careful on what kind of equipment you buy.
36:48I try to keep it the same, the same brands, the same vintages, the same size tires.
36:55If you can get the same equipment, you have to only stock so many parts.
37:03When you do lose a machine, you can now salvage those parts, and they will fit the rest of
37:09your fleet.
37:12Also my mechanics, if they work on the same brand of equipment 24-7, they know the quirks
37:18and what goes wrong with that piece of equipment.
37:22So I'm very, very mindful on what I buy so everything's the same.
37:28The right equipment complement will make you successful.
37:31High in the hills of the forever clay.
37:45High in the hills.
37:53Holy .
37:55Well that's not a bad one eh, partner?
38:06That was a gooder.
38:07All the good wood's still there.
38:10It's not on the road.
38:12Yeah.
38:13As soon as trees hit the ground and especially when it works
38:16out for you, you know, your adrenaline's pumping.
38:19You're stoked.
38:20I'm going to say six foot.
38:22Yeah, she's just done that.
38:24Nice.
38:25You know, you got a good log out of this thing and it's just,
38:27yeah, it's what we live for and why I do it.
38:31That's a beauty piece of wood though.
38:33Yeah, for sure.
38:34Like, well, it's still holding like five feet in diameter.
38:36Up here.
38:37I'll pay some bells.
38:39That's what we're here for.
38:41Now you're just going to show me the money.
38:50Back by the water.
38:52Hey.
38:53Hey.
38:54Watch it.
38:57Yeah, he wants it.
39:00Perfect.
39:06I'm struggling getting a light one.
39:10I can't imagine what the big one's going to be like.
39:18Here we go.
39:19You can just hear the tightening and the strain of everything.
39:34Oh, fingers crossed.
39:35Come on, baby.
39:36Come on, baby.
39:37Gives you the goosebumps.
39:38Nice and gentle.
39:42Enough of that poor for today.
39:44Come on baby, come on baby, good to see the goosebumps, nice and gentle, whoo, enough
40:08of that poor s**t for today.
40:11Well Glen, pretty much gone.
40:15Yeah right off.
40:16Pretty much done.
40:18Just a bit of scrapings left.
40:20Everything's off and we can get back to making some money.
40:22Yeah for sure.
40:23Stop spending money and time to make money.
40:26By the end of this season, I got to get two million dollars.
40:31Just one of these trees could be worth tens of thousands of dollars.
40:37But I owe John a rarity.
40:40$100,000 per barge, every barge, without fail.
40:46Well hopefully we'll get some wood.
40:49We will.
40:53Next time.
40:55John definitely has the upper hand.
40:58I have all this money out.
41:00This is a huge gamble.
41:02We're definitely on target.
41:03Okay, well I'm looking forward to that barge coming in.
41:06To keep my people employed, I have to make this work.
41:11Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong if you let it.
41:14Failure is not an option.
41:16Oh f***!
